Two new, recent diatoms, Stephanodiscus suzukii Tuji et Kociolek and Stephanodiscus pseudosuzukii Tuji et Kociolek are described from Lake Biwa, Japan, where they had been identified previously as Stephanodiscus carconensis Grunow var. carconensis and S. carconensis var. pusillus Grunow, respectively. These forms are compared in terms of valve ultrastructure with populations of S. carconensis from North America. The Japanese species differ from the North American specimens in characteristics related to the central fultoportula and rimoportula.  相似文献

The spatial distribution and seasonal variation in the concentrations in Lake Biwa of pesticides used in paddy fields were studied. Lake Biwa is the largest lake in Japan and is a recognized water resource for 14 million people in the Kinki district. Samples were collected nine times from April to December 2001 at ten sites within the lake and at the mouths of six influent rivers. Weekly sampling was also carried out at a single site on an effluent river. Among the 20 pesticides analyzed, the detection frequencies in surface water were almost 100% for simetryn, bromobutide, and isoprothiolane; around 75% for molinate and pyroquilon; around 30% for three herbicides and one fungicide; and almost zero for the remaining substances. The maximum concentrations of pesticides detected frequently in the lake were in the range 0.1–0.4µgl–1. The occurrence of a few pesticides below the thermocline may be explained by thermal stratification and vertical circulation. Although the thermocline suppressed vertical diffusion in spring and summer during pesticide application periods, a few pesticides remaining at the surface of the lake in winter were transported to the hypolimnion by vertical circulation and remained there even after the reestablishment of the thermocline. The half-lives of pesticides in the lake were estimated to be more than a year for simetryn, half a year for bromobutide, 1.5 months for molinate, and 1 month for dimepiperate. The main cause of elimination for molinate and dimepiperate was estimated to be degradation, that for simetryn was outflow, and for bromobutide both degradation and outflow were significant.  相似文献

Aulacoseira skvortzowii sp. nov. is a diatom taxon present in modern plankton assemblages and sedimentary deposits from Lake Baikal, Russia. It has been previously reported as A. islandica (O. Müll.) Simonsen, A. islandica ssp. helvetica (O. Müll.) Simonsen, a sporangial frustule of A. baicalensis (K. Meyer) Simonsen, and Aulacoseira “spore”. However, its microstructure, ecology, and ability to form true resting spores provide ample criteria to describe this diatom as Aulacoseira skvortzowii sp. nov.  相似文献

Effects of summer drawdown on cyprinid fish larvae in Lake Biwa, Japan   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The effects of artificial water-level manipulations in Lake Biwa, initiated in 1992 to prevent flooding, on cyprinid fish larvae were assessed by measuring and estimating the topographic change in the reed zones. The shallow, litter-accumulated water in those zones was inhabited by larvae of two species, Carassius spp. and Cyprinus carpio. More than 70% (by volume) of these shallow areas in Lake Biwa was estimated to be lost when the water level was artificially lowered by 30cm from June to October 1997. During the low water level period, significantly fewer eggs of these cyprinid fishes were collected in a reed zone than in April and May of the same year, a comparison with a previous study suggesting that spawning of the fishes was inhibited during the period of low water level. The artificial reductions in water level probably resulted in a significant decrease in the volume of shallow water in the lake and may be linked to the drastic decline in these cyprinid fishes.  相似文献

The dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in mesotrophic Lake Biwa were determined by a total organic carbon (TOC) analyzer, and DOC molecular size distributions were determined by size exclusion chromatography (SEC) using a fluorescence detector at excitation/emission (Ex/Em) levels of 300/425 nm with the eluent at pH 9.7. The fluorescence wavelengths for detection were chosen from the result of excitation–emission matrix spectrometry (EEM) analysis for dissolved fulvic acid (DFA) extracted from Ado River (peak A, Ex/Em = 260–270/430–440 nm; peak B, Ex/Em = 300–310/420–430 nm). Ado River DFA was eluted with a retention time (RT) of 7.4–8.9 min and the apparent molecular weight was estimated at 22–87 kDa based on the elution curve for the spherical protein molecular weight standard. A DFA peak eluted at the same retention time as Ado River DFA also appeared in all the samples of Lake Biwa water. From the linear relationship between the peak areas with an RT of 7.4–8.9 min by SEC analysis and DOC values of DFA by TOC analysis of a series of DFA samples (r2 = 0.9995), the concentrations of DFA in the lake water were roughly calculated. DFA was distributed within the range 0.25–0.43 mg C l−1 and accounted for 15%–41% of DOC, with the highest ratios observed at a depth of 70 m in August and the lowest at 2.5 m in May.  相似文献

We used light and scanning electron microscope analyses to quantify morphometric features (valve length, width, stria density, lineola density and valve curvature) from the observation of valves representing Seminavis pusilla. Cluster analysis based on Gaussian mixture models and the expectation‐maximization algorithm was used for delineating two species, Seminavis pusilla sensu stricto and Seminavis lata (Krammer) Rioual comb. et stat. nov. By comparison with S. pusilla, S. lata is characterized by wider valves and lower stria density. The two species have also markedly different ecology. S. pusilla is most abundant in the most saline lakes of the dataset, while S. lata is most abundant in the less saline lakes. Our results indicate that combining the two species into S. pusilla sensu lato would lead to a loss of ecological information and a decrease of the performance of transfer functions developed for quantitative reconstruction of past salinity from fossil diatom assemblages in sediment cores.  相似文献

We have developed a procedure to process echosounding data to map the distribution of submerged aquatic macrophytes in the southern basin of Lake Biwa, a water body that has a surface area of 52 km2 and a mean depth of 4 m. Echosounding observations were made along 27 transect lines spaced at 500-m intervals on August 4 and September 2 and 30, 2003. Quantitative vegetation data including percent coverage, mean vegetation height, and percent vegetation infestation were directly determined using image data from the echosounder recorded digitally on videotape. Based on the image data from an echosounder, a regression model was developed for estimating biomass of submerged macrophytes. The regression model using the total echo strength as the explanatory variable could reliably estimate macrophyte biomass up to 300 g m−2. Distribution maps of macrophyte height and biomass suggest that the recent summer decline of submerged macrophytes started earlier in shallow areas (<3 m of depth) than deep areas (>4 m) in the southern basin of Lake Biwa.  相似文献

Forty-eight-hour experimental manipulations of zooplankton biomass were performed to examine the potential effects of zooplankton on nutrient availability and phytoplankton biomass (as measured by seston concentration) and C : N : P stoichiometry in eutrophic nearshore waters of Lake Biwa, Japan. Increasing zooplankton, both mixed-species communities and Daphnia alone, consistently reduced seston concentration, indicating that nearshore phytoplankton were generally edible. The zooplankton clearance rates of inshore phytoplankton were similar to rates measured previously for offshore phytoplankton. Increased zooplankton biomass led to increased concentrations of nutrients (NH4-N, soluble reactive phosphorus [SRP]). Net release rates were higher than those found in previous measurements made offshore, reflecting the nutrient-rich nature of inshore seston. Zooplankton nutrient recycling consistently decreased TIN : SRP ratios (TIN = NH4 + NO3 + NO2). This effect probably resulted from the low N : P ratios of nearshore seston, which were lower than those commonly found in crustacean zooplankton and thus resulted in low retention efficiency of P (relative to N) by the zooplankton. Thus, zooplankton grazing inshore may ameliorate algal blooms due to direct consumption but tends to create nutrient supply conditions with low N : P, potentially favoring cyanobacteria. In comparison with previous findings for offshore, it appears that potential zooplankton effects on phytoplankton and nutrient dynamics differ qualitatively in inshore and offshore regions of Lake Biwa. MtDNA sequence data ( c . 2100 bp of complete D‐loop + cytochrome b gene regions) showed a principal phylogenetic split within common carp Cyprinus carpio between the Lake Biwa wild form ( n  = 3) and 'Eurasian' wild ( n  = 18) and domesticated ( n  = 35) forms. This supports the idea of the ancient origin of the Lake Biwa wild form, as well as the East Asian origin of wild common carp, previously proposed on the basis of fossil data. In addition, a possible multiple origin of koi carp was indicated by the polyphyletic distribution of five mtDNA haplotypes of koi carp within the 'Eurasian' clade.  相似文献

Phragmites australis (Poaceae) is a clonal perennial that is an important component of wetland ecosystems worldwide. Using flow cytometry, we examined the cytotype distributions within five populations of P. australis located in the vicinity of Lake Biwa. As in previous reports, two ploidy levels, octoploid (2n = 8x = 96) and decaploid (2n = 10x = 120), were identified, which are assumed to be the main cytotypes around the lake. The coexistence of two cytotypes was detected in four of the five populations, suggesting the relatively common occurrence of mixed ploidy levels in the populations around Lake Biwa. Although intermingled cytotype distributions were observed in some populations, the 9x cytotype, that is, the expected outcome of inter‐cytotype crosses, was not observed, indicating limited gene flow between the two cytotypes.  相似文献

A new species of Cocconeis has been found growing on the green seaweed Caulerpa racemosa (Forsskål) J. Agardh var. laete‐virens (Montagne) Weber van Bosse from Shikine Island in the Izu Islands on the Pacific coast of Japan; we propose the name Cocconeis shiki‐nensis Hid. Suzuki and describe the species by light microscopy (LM) and electron microscopy (EM). This taxon was also collected from the plastic plates used for rearing in seed production systems of the abalone Nordotis discus hannai Ino and the horned turban Turbo cornutus Solander in the Toyama Prefectural Fisheries Research Institute facing the Sea of Japan. The main morphological features of C. shikinensis are as follows. The valves are elliptic. The valve face of the raphid valve (RV) is slightly concave and that of the araphid valve (AV) is complementary to the RV and convex. The single plastid is flat, C‐shaped and elaborately lobed. The raphe on the RV is straight. The each terminal area expands to both sides along the valve margin, forming an arrowhead‐shaped, thickened hyaline area. The striae consist of small, round areolae and are radiate and uniseriate. On the AV, the striae consist of several alveoli. Each alveolus opens internally by means of a circular foramen. The valvocopula of each valve is fimbriate and open. The cingulum attached to the AV consists of three girdle bands; a valvocopula and two bands (copula and pleura), which are open and have ligulae. The relationship between C. shikinensis and similar members of the genus Cocconeis is discussed.  相似文献

Under optimal nutrient conditions, both Microcystis sp. and Anabaena sp. isolated from Lake Biwa grew optimally at 28–32°C but differed in maximal growth rates, phosphate uptake kinetics, maximal phosphorus quotas, and growth responses to nitrogen and phosphorus limitation. The maximal growth rates of Microcystis and Anabaena were 1.6 and 1.25 divisions day−1, respectively. With phosphate and nitrate in the growth-limiting range, the growth of Microcystis was optimal at an N : P ratio of 100 : 1 (by weight) and declined at lower (nitrogen limitation) and higher (phosphorus limitation) ratios. In contrast, Anabaena growth rates did not change at N : P ratios from 1000 : 1 to 10 : 1. Starting with cells containing the maximal phosphorus quota, Microcystis growth in minus-phosphorus medium ceased in 7–9 days, compared with 12–13 days for Anabaena. The phosphate turnover time in cultures starved to their minimum cell quotas was 7.9 min for Microcystis and 0.6 min for Anabaena. Microcystis had a higher K s (0.12 μg P l−1 10−6 cells) and lower V max (9.63 μg P l−1 h−1 10−6 cells), than Anabaena (K s 0.02 μg P l−1 h−1 10−6 cells; V max 46.25 63 μg P l−1 h−1 10−6 cells), suggesting that Microcystis would not be able to grow well in phosphorus-limited waters. We conclude that in spite of the higher growth rate under ideal conditions, Microcystis does not usually bloom in the North Basin because of low availability of phosphorus and nitrogen. Although Anabaena has an efficient phosphorus-uptake system, its main strategy for growth in low-phosphorus environments may depend on storage of phosphorus during periods of abundant phosphorus supply, which are rare in the North Basin. Eight microsatellite loci of Calystegia soldanella useful for comparisons of the genetic structure of isolated populations in the ancient Lake Biwa and coastal populations in Japan were isolated and characterised. The number of alleles ranged from 2 to 5. The expected (H E) and observed (H O) heterozygosities were 0.097–0.583 and 0.000–0.380, respectively, from 100 individuals from Lake Biwa and coastal populations. Seven of the eight loci exhibited significantly fewer heterozygotes than expected based on the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium (< 0.05). These primers amplifying microsatellites in C. soldanella may provide a population genetics tool useful in the establishment of a conservation strategy.  相似文献

Vertical distributions of biomass and the photosynthetic activity of epilithic algae were observed seasonally with regard to their physical and chemical parameters along a rocky shoreline of the upper littoral area in the north basin of Lake Biwa. Chlorophyll a amounts in epilithic algae showed a marked change with depth from spring to early summer. The algal biomass showed higher values on the lower part of a large rock in early spring, and gradually increased on the upper part as a result of the growth of Spirogyra sp., a filamentous Chlorophyceae. This growth seems to be associated with a rise in water temperature, with the biomass at the upper depths seeming to be affected by a hydraulic disturbance. The standing crop of epilithic algae showed a maximum value in June and declined to a minimum in August because of the corresponding proliferation or disappearance of Spirogyra as well as changes in the water level. The maximum value of the assimilation number calculated from the potential photosynthetic rate of epilithic algae was obtained at the lower depths in June when Spirogyra grew vigorously. Appreciably high assimilation numbers were also observed in summer and fall, although chlorophyll a amounts were low. The present study is the first in a series to clarify the contribution of epilithic algae on rocky areas to productivity throughout the entire littoral ecosystem.  相似文献

During a survey of the coral reef diatoms of Moorea Island (Society Archipelago, South Pacific) a small‐sized member of the order Achnanthales was studied using a light microscope (LM) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). This marine taxon has: a raphe valve (RV) with a non‐crenulate edge; a high cingulum; a sternum valve (SV) often irregularly striated and areolae with concave hymenate pore occlusion; a thick and plain SV valvocopula (SVVC), ring‐shaped, composed of large fused fimbriae, with a central elliptic foramen bordered by the peg‐like edge of the fimbriae. On abvalvar side, the SVVC bears radiate concave and robust transapical ribs, interlinking with short elevated transverse ribs of the RV valvocopula (RVVC). Large marginal fenestrae of the RVVC give access to pseudoloculi. One oblong, unique and striated papilla is located on each RVVC rib. Given this unique set of features, we describe Xenococconeis opunohusiensis gen. et sp. nov. as a new taxon belonging to the Achnanthales. The characteristics of the new taxon are compared with Campyloneis Grunow and Cocconeis Ehrenberg. From New Caledonia, Cocconeis neocaledonica Maillard ex Lange‐Bertalot et Steindorf, a freshwater diatom, was described with two internal septa with marginal pseudoloculi. Based on subsequent SEM illustrations and remarks, we propose the transfer of C. neocaledonica to the new genus, and compare it to the type species, Xenococconeis opunohusiensis.  相似文献

A new triundulate naviculoid diatom genus is described from the Western Ghats of Peninsular India and Hainan Province, China. The new taxon, Kulikovskiyia gen. nov. has robust conical spines along its margin and at the apices and the external valve face has longitudinally‐oriented siliceous slat system extending the length of the valve. The external distal raphe ends bifurcate and terminates on the valve face. There appear to be superficial similarities between this Asian genus and species and Playaensis, a genus comprised of two species found only in the western USA. The systematic position of Kulikovskiyia is discussed, and other than noting its similarities to other biraphid naviculoid diatoms due to symmetry features and the position of the raphe, we are uncertain about its systematic placement at finer levels of classification.  相似文献

Three fragilarioid diatom taxa were studied in detail at the light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy levels from samples collected from Lake Hovsgol, Mongolia. Two of the taxa are new to science, described here as Staurosirella minuta Morales et M. B. Edlund and Pseudostaurosira tenuis Morales et M. B. Edlund, and may be endemic to Lake Hovsgol. The third taxon has been identified as Fragilaria polonica Witak et Lange‐Bertalot and it is transferred to the genus Pseudostaurosira (Grunow) D. M. Williams et Round as Pseudostaurosira polonica (Witak et Lange‐Bertalot) Morales et M. B. Edlund comb. nov. based on the ultrastructural features of its valves. The relationship of the above taxa to others reported in the literature is included herein, and the nomenclatural transfer, Pseudostaurosira naveana (Le Cohu) Morales et M. B. Edlund comb. nov., is proposed.  相似文献
