The aim of this research is to investigate the relationship between obesity and wages, using data for nine countries from the European Community Household Panel (ECHP) over the period 1998-2001. We improve upon the existing literature by adopting a Quantile Regression approach to characterize the heterogenous impact of obesity at different points of the wage distribution. Our results show that (i) the evidence obtained from mean regression and pooled analysis hides a significant amount of heterogeneity as the relationship between obesity and wages differs across countries and wages quantiles and (ii) cultural, environmental or institutional settings do not seem to be able to explain differences among countries, leaving room for a pure discriminatory effect hypothesis.  相似文献

Rats were trained on mixed-fixed-interval (FI) schedules, with component FIs of 30 and 60s. The probability of reinforcement according to FI 30s varied between conditions, across values of 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9. When response rate in the 60s intervals was measured, separate response peaks, one close to 30s, the other at 60s, could be identified when the probability of reinforcement at 30s was 0.3 or greater. Nonlinear regression found that the location of the earlier peak was always close to 30s, that the coefficient of variation of the response functions at 30 and 60s were unaffected by reinforcement probability, but that the 30s component appeared to be timed slightly more precisely than the 60s one. Response rate at around 30s increased with increasing probability of reinforcement according to FI 30s, but responding at 60s was unaffected by reinforcement probability. The data are discussed with respect to a number of contemporary models of animal timing (scalar expectancy theory, the Behavioural Theory of Timing and the Learning to Time model), and a recent account of response output on FI-like schedules.  相似文献

The azide displacement reaction on methyl 6-deoxy-4-O-methanesulphonyl-2,3-di-O-methyl-α-l-talopyranoside (6) in N,N-dimethylformamide yielded methyl 4,6-dideoxy-2,3-di-O-methyl-α-l-threo-hex-3-enopyranoside (7, ca. 50%), methyl 4,6-dideoxy-2,3-di-O-methyl-β-d-erythro-hex-4-enopyranoside (8, ca. 10%), and methyl 4-azido-4,6-dideoxy-2,3-di-O-methyl-α-l-mannopyranoside (9, ca. 40%). The corresponding azide 14 (20%) and the unsaturated sugars 12 (68%) and 13 (12%) were obtained from a comparable reaction on benzyl 6-deoxy-4-O-methanesulphonyl-2,3-di-O-methyl-α-l-talopyranoside (11).  相似文献

An α-l-Rhamnose specific lectin site was described on human skin keratinocytes and fibrobasts. The addition of Rhamnose-rich oligo- and polysaccharides (RROPs) to fibroblasts has been shown to stimulate cell proliferation and increase extracellular matrix biosynthesis, suggesting that this lectin site functions as a “true” receptor transmitting messages to the cell interior. It was confirmed here that addition of the Rhamnose-rich polysaccharide, RROP-1, to normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDFs) and human endothelial cells produced a dose-dependent stimulation of the calcium-signaling pathway, inducing fast and transient increases in Ca2+ influx and intracellular free Ca2+ level. The Rhamnose-rich oligosaccharide RROP-3 as well as l-Rhamnose alone were also able to trigger similar intracellular free Ca2+ concentration increases in NHDFs. Moreover, the recording of the RROP-1-induced modification of the gene-expression profile in fibroblasts showed that this polysaccharide triggered a down-regulation of the expression of several growth factors, adhesion molecules and extracellular matrix proteins involved in pro-tumoral activity and/or fibrotic processes. These results further support the hypothesis of a receptor function for the Rhamnose-recognizing lectin site in fibroblasts. Anti-fibrotic and anti-tumoral potential of RROP-1 remains to be further explored.  相似文献

Results

of morphological and tomographic (CT) studies of the skull that was found in the crypt of the Silesian Piasts in the St. Jadwiga church in Brzeg (Silesia, Poland) are presented and discussed here. The established date of burial of probably a 20–30 years old male was 16th–17th century. The analyzed skull showed premature obliteration of the major skull sutures. It resulted in the braincase deformation, similar to the forms found in oxycephaly and microcephaly. Tomographic analysis revealed gross pathology. Signs of increased intracranial pressure, basilar invagination and hypoplasia of the occipital bone were observed. Those results suggested the occurrence of the very rare Arnold-Chiari syndrome. Lesions found in the sella turcica indicated the development of pituitary macroadenoma, which resulted in the occurrence of discreet features of acromegaly in the facial bones. The studied skull was characterized by a significantly smaller size of the neurocranium (horizontal circumference 471 mm, cranial capacity ∼1080 ml) and strongly expressed brachycephaly (cranial index = 86.3), while its height remained within the range for non-deformed skulls. A narrow face, high eye-sockets and prognathism were also observed. Signs of alveolar process hypertrophy with rotation and displacement of the teeth were noted. The skull showed significant morphological differences compared to both normal and other pathological skulls such as those with pituitary gigantism, scaphocephaly and microcephaly.  相似文献

In oxygenic photosynthesis, cyclic electron flow around photosystem I denotes the recycling of electrons from stromal electron carriers (reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate, NADPH, ferredoxin) towards the plastoquinone pool. Whether or not cyclic electron flow operates similarly in Chlamydomonas and plants has been a matter of debate. Here we would like to emphasize that despite the regulatory or metabolic differences that may exist between green algae and plants, the general mechanism of cyclic electron flow seems conserved across species. The most accurate way to describe cyclic electron flow remains to be a redox equilibration model, while the supramolecular reorganization of the thylakoid membrane (state transitions) has little impact on the maximal rate of cyclic electron flow. The maximum capacity of the cyclic pathways is shown to be around 60 electrons transferred per photosystem per second, which is in Chlamydomonas cells treated with 3(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (DCMU) and placed under anoxic conditions. Selective tosylation of methyl 2-benzamido-2-deoxy-α-D-glucopyranoside at room temperature gave a mixture of the 6-sulphonate and the 3,6- and 4,6-disulphonates in yields of 25, 20, and 12%, respectively. Treatment of the 4-acetate of the 3,6-disulphonate with iodide ion gave the 3,6-di-iodo-D-gluco derivative, with overall retention of configuration involving participation of the 2-benzamido substituent in the substitution of the 3-tosyl group and formation of an intermediary oxazolinium ion. Reduction of the 3,6-di-iodo derivative gave methyl 2-benzamido-2,3,6-trideoxy-α-D-ribo-hexopyranoside. The disulphonates, characterised as their monoacetates, were synthesised from methyl 2-benzamido-4,6-O-benzylidene-2-deoxy-α-D-glucopyranoside by unambiguous routes, each of which was superior to selective tosylation.  相似文献

This paper is based on linked qualitative studies of the donation of human embryos to stem cell research carried out in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and China. All three studies used semi-structured interview protocols to allow an in-depth examination of donors’ and non-donors’ rationales for their donation decisions, with the aim of gaining information on contextual and other factors that play a role in donor decisions and identifying how these relate to factors that are more usually included in evaluations made by theoretical ethics. Our findings have implications for one factor that has previously been suggested as being of ethical concern: the role of gratitude. Our empirical work shows no evidence that interpersonal gratitude is an important factor, but it does support the existence of a solidarity-based desire to “give something back” to medical research. Thus, we use empirical data to expand and refine the conceptual basis of bioethically theorizing the IVF–stem cell interface.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to compare the efficiency of the intravaginal (IVAI) vs. intrauterine artificial insemination (IUAI) using frozen–thawed sperm in the domestic cat. Semen was collected from two tom cats using an artificial vagina and samples were assessed for motility (computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA)), sperm morphology and plasma membrane integrity. After dilution with TRIS/OEP/YOLK (4% of glycerol), sperm samples were loaded into 0.25 mL straws (25 × 106 motile sperm/straw), incubated at 5 °C for 20 min and cryopreserved over liquid nitrogen (LN2) vapor for 15 min and then immersed in LN2. For each AI, four straws from the same male were thawed (12 s at 46 °C) and centrifuged at 250 × g for 8 min to pellet the sperm. The supernatant was discarded and sperm pellet resuspended with the remaining liquid, approximately 100 μL, and analyzed as described above. Queens were treated with a single im injection of 100 IU eCG to induce ovarian follicular development. Final oocyte maturation and ovulation was induced with 100 IU hCG given im at 82–84 h after eCG administration. Thirty hours after hCG administration, females were inseminated either intrauterine (n = 8 queens) or intravaginally (n = 8 queens), using thawed sperm from a single male. Although a pronounced decrease in sperm motility, acrosome and plasma membrane integrity was observed in sperm samples from both cats, a pregnancy rate of 75% was achieved when using the intrauterine AI method compared with 0% pregnancy when inseminated intravaginally.  相似文献

Are embryos deserving of moral consideration in our actions? A standard view suggests that embryos are considerable only if they have interests. One argument for embryonic interests contends that embryos are harmed by death because they are deprived of valuable future lives as adult persons. Some have challenged this argument on the grounds that embryos aren’t identical to adults: either due to the potential for embryos to twin or because we do not exist until the fetus develops consciousness. These arguments fail to show that embryos do not have future adult lives. There is a better reason to think that embryos cannot have interests; namely, because they are not capable of having desires. Others have held this view but have not sufficiently justified it. The justification lies in the fact that the capacity for desires is necessary to make sense of the normativity of interests.  相似文献

Macrophages are a major source of lipid mediators in the human lung. Expression and contribution of cytosolic (cPLA2) and secreted phospholipases A2 (sPLA2) to the generation of lipid mediators in human macrophages are unclear. We investigated the expression and role of different PLA2s in the production of lipid mediators in primary human lung macrophages. Macrophages express the alpha, but not the zeta isoform of group IV and group VIA cPLA2 (iPLA2). Two structurally-divergent inhibitors of group IV cPLA2 completely block arachidonic acid release by macrophages in response to non-physiological (Ca2+ ionophores and phorbol esters) and physiological agonists (lipopolysaccharide and Mycobacterium protein derivative). These inhibitors also reduce by 70% the synthesis of platelet-activating factor by activated macrophages. Among the full set of human sPLA2s, macrophages express group IIA, IID, IIE, IIF, V, X and XIIA, but not group IB and III enzymes. Me-Indoxam, a potent and cell impermeable inhibitor of several sPLA2s, has no effect on arachidonate release or platelet-activating factor production. Agonist-induced exocytosis is not influenced by cPLA2 inhibitors at concentrations that block arachidonic acid release. Our results indicate that human macrophages express cPLA2-alpha, iPLA2 and several sPLA2s. Cytosolic PLA2-alpha is the major enzyme responsible for lipid mediator production in human macrophages.  相似文献
