Oak decline, a complex process leading to increased mortality of this species, has been observed in Europe for many years. Previous studies suggest that climate conditions, especially drought, may be one of the most important factors that trigger this phenomenon. The paper investigates the radial growth and wood anatomy features of pedunculate oak (Quercus robur) trees of various health status as well as their response to climate conditions. Wood samples including all annual increments were taken at two sites (western and central Poland, 15 trees each). Based on the crown defoliation level, three health groups (healthy, weakened and dead oaks) were distinguished. Cross-sections were prepared with sliding microtome and Cell P image analysis software was used for the measurements. Tree-ring width (TRW), earlywood vessels density (VDen) and non-weighted vessels diameter (VD) were determined and correlated with mean monthly values of temperature, precipitation, vapour pressure, and Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI). Radial increment and anatomical parameters were significantly higher for the healthy oaks than for the weakened and the dead trees. TRW showed smaller dependence on climate than analysed anatomical attributes. No obvious pattern of relationship was found between oak radial growth and climate regarding tree health status. Our results revealed that the drought has a weak impact on the process of oak decline on investigated sites in Poland.  相似文献

Long-term studies have revealed population declines in fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. In birds, and particularly amphibians, these declines are a global phenomenon whose causes are often unclear. Among reptiles, snakes are top predators and therefore a decline in their numbers may have serious consequences for the functioning of many ecosystems. Our results show that, of 17 snake populations (eight species) from the UK, France, Italy, Nigeria and Australia, 11 have declined sharply over the same relatively short period of time with five remaining stable and one showing signs of a marginal increase. Although the causes of these declines are currently unknown, we suspect that they are multi-faceted (such as habitat quality deterioration, prey availability), and with a common cause, e.g. global climate change, at their root.  相似文献

At a low concentration of D-glucose (3.3 mM), the phosphorylation rate of this hexose in rat pancreatic islet homogenates incubated at 8 degrees C is higher with the beta- than with the alpha-anomer, as expected from the anomeric specificity of hexokinase. In the presence of a high concentration of glucose 6-phosphate (3.0 mM), which inhibits hexokinase but not glucokinase, the phosphorylation rates of the two anomers are not significantly different from one another. Nevertheless, in intact islets exposed at 8 degrees C to the same low concentration of D-glucose, the alpha-anomer augments, more than the beta-anomer, the production of lactic acid and net uptake of 45Ca. At the same concentration (3.3 mM), the alpha-anomer is also more potent than the beta-anomer in enhancing insulin release from perfused pancreases stimulated at 37 degrees C by L-leucine or by the combination of Ba2+ and theophylline. It is concluded that the participation of glucokinase is not essential for the anomeric specificity of glycolysis and insulin release in rat pancreatic islets.  相似文献

Although energetic and phylogenetic methods have been very successful for prediction of nucleic acid secondary structures, arrangement of these secondary structure elements into tertiary structure has remained a difficult problem. Here we explore the packing arrangements of DNA, RNA, and DNA/RNA hybrid molecules in crystals. In the conventional view, the highly charged double helix will be pushed toward isolation by favorable solvation effects; interactions with other like-charged stacks would be strongly disfavored. Contrary to this expectation, we find that most of the cases analyzed ( approximately 80%) exhibit specific, preferential packing between elements of secondary structure, which falls into three categories: (i) interlocking of major grooves of two helices, (ii) side-by-side parallel packing of helices, and (iii) placement of the ribose-phosphate backbone ridge of one helix into the major groove of another. The preponderance of parallel packing motifs is especially surprising. This category is expected to be maximally disfavored by charge repulsion. Instead, it comprises in excess of 50% of all packing interactions in crystals of A-form RNA and has also been observed in crystal structures of large RNA molecules. To explain this puzzle, we introduce a novel model for RNA folding. A simple calculation suggests that the entropy gained by a cloud of condensed cations surrounding the helices more than offsets the Coulombic repulsion of parallel arrangements. We propose that these condensed counterions are responsible for entropy-driven RNA collapse, analogous to the role of the hydrophobic effect in protein folding.  相似文献

The reduced febrile response in aged man has been noted since the beginning of clinical thermometry. Our previous research on aged rabbits and squirrel monkeys disclosed a similar reduced fever, presumably due to a decrease in central receptors for endogenous pyrogen. However, because central alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH) appears to have a potent role in physiological control of fever, it may be that increased release of the peptide is responsible for the reduced febrile response in aged animals. To test this idea, antiserum specific to MSH was administered intracerebroventricularly to rabbits of known age. The antiserum given according to three schedules of treatment augmented fever caused by IV injections of interleukin-1 (IL-1) in young (less than 2 years) male and female rabbits. Aged female rabbits (3-5+ years) and females aged 2-3 years showed significant augmentation of fever only after pretreatment plus acute injection of antiserum. A single ICV injection of MSH (200 ng) reduced fever in all groups with the greatest antipyretic effect in the aged females. The results indicate that while aged rabbits have an increased antipyretic response to central MSH, binding of the endogenous peptide does not result in marked increases in fever in these animals. Thus, whereas a change in central MSH sensitivity may contribute to reduced fever in aged homeotherms, a reduction in central pyrogen receptors appears to be the most parsimonious explanation.  相似文献

DNA variability was investigated in the last intron of the Y-chromosome-specific zinc finger gene, ZFY, and its X homolog on Xp21.3, ZFX. No polymorphisms were found in the 676-bp ZFY segment in a sample of 205 world-wide-distributed Y chromosomes, other than a solitary nucleotide variant in one individual (nucleotide diversity pi = 0.0014%). In contrast, 10 segregating sites (pi = 0.082%) were identified within 1,089 bp of the ZFX sequence in a sample of 336 X chromosomes. Four of these polymorphisms, which contributed most of the diversity, were located within an Alu insert disrupting the ZFY-ZFX homology (pi Alu = 0.24%). The diversity in the homologous portion of the ZFX intron, although higher than that in ZFY, was lower than that found in genomic segments believed to evolve neutrally; interspecies divergence in both segments was also reduced. Although this suggests that the evolution of both ZFY and ZFX homologs may not be entirely neutral, both Tajima and HKA tests did not reject neutrality. The lack of statistical significance may be attributed to a lack of power in these tests (the low divergence and variability values reduce the power of the HKA and Tajima tests, respectively); furthermore, Homo sapiens has recently undergone a rapid population growth, and selection is more difficult to detect in an expanding population. Therefore, the failure to reject neutrality does not necessarily indicate the absence of selection. In this context, the phylogenetic argument was given more weight in out interpretations. The high level of sequence identity in ZFY and ZFX segments, in spite of their separation 80-130 MYA, reflects a lower mutation rate as compared with other segments believed to undergo unconstrained evolution. Thus, the possibility of weak selection contributing to the low level of nucleotide diversity in the last ZFY intron cannot be excluded and should be kept in mind in the population genetics studies based on Y chromosome variability.  相似文献

In this issue (see pages 37 to 41) Dr. Bruce B. Allan and associates report a small but statistically significant decrease--of about 0.2%--in the proportion of male live births in Canada over the period 1970-90. In this editorial, factors that have been reported in the literature to influence sex ratio are examined within a Canadian context. The authors suggest that although the reasons for the apparent decline in the sex ratio in Canada are unclear, the increasing use of ovulation induction may be a contributing factor. Data from the Nova Scotia Atlee Perinatal Database are discussed with a view to explaining the trend observed in Atlantic Canada, but no obvious explanation emerges. The authors argue that when the period of observation is extended no overall change in the sex ratio is apparent. This would suggest a tendency toward stabilization rather than decline.  相似文献

Reduced cytokine production in ex vivo cultures has been regularly reported in patients suffering from sepsis syndrome. Using whole blood assays, we have now demonstrated that in sepsis patients, normal production of IL-8 was achieved with the higher concentration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 1 microg/ml) and with heat-killed streptococci, whereas the IL-8 production induced by lower LPS concentration (0.1 microg/ml) was significantly reduced as compared to healthy controls. In contrast, in patients undergoing cardiac surgery associated with cardio-pulmonary bypass, a group of patients with inflammation in the absence of infectious insult, none of the studied IL-8 productions were affected. Among the various anti-inflammatory cytokines known to regulate IL-8 production which we tested (i.e. IL-4, IL-10, IL-13, TGF-beta), IL-10 was the most active inhibitory cytokine in whole blood assays performed with blood samples from healthy subjects. However, its activity was not influenced by the amounts of LPS used. In addition, IL-10 also inhibited the heat-killed streptococci-induced IL-8 production and was the only cytokine to inhibit the release of IL-8 when TNF was added to LPS. It is worth noting that IL-13 which also inhibited the heat-killed streptococci-induced IL-8 production, failed to do so when the TNF production was analysed. Together, these data suggest that while circulating IL-10 in septic patients may be responsible for the hyporeactivity of circulating leukocytes, its presence is not sufficient to explain the observed dysregulation which occurs in septic patients.  相似文献

Climate change has ignited lively research into its impact on various population-level processes. The research agenda in ecology says that some of the fluctuations in population size are accountable for by the external noise (e.g. weather) modulating the dynamics of populations. We obeyed the agenda by assuming population growth after a resource-limited Leslie matrix model in an age-structured population. The renewal process was disturbed by superimposing noise on the development of numbers in one or several age groups. We constructed models for iteroparous and semelparous breeders so that, for both categories, the population growth rate was matching. We analysed how the modulated population dynamics correlates with the noise signal with different time-lags. No significant correlations were observed for semelparous breeders, whereas for iteroparous breeders high correlations were frequently observed with time-lags of 71 year or longer. However, the latter occurs under red-coloured noise and for low growth rates when the disturbance is on the youngest age group only. It is laborious to find any clear signs of the (red) noise- and age group-specific fluctuations if the disturbance influences older age groups only. These results cast doubts on the possibility of detecting the signature of external disturbance after it has modulated temporal fluctuations in age-structured populations.  相似文献

In chronic pontine cats without hypothalamo-hypophysis, daily subcutaneous or intraventricular injection of total extracts of Bovine neuro-intermediate lobe increases both survival and quantity of paradoxical sleep, while synthetic Lysine vasopressin, Oxytocin or ACTH have no effect. Chronic pontine cats with "isolated hypophysis" have a longer survival and a more significant amount of paradoxical sleep than those without hypothalamo-hypophysis. Factor(s) liberated by pars intermedia are very likely to be responsible for the increase of PS since only pars intermedia remains functional in the "isolated hypophysis" as shown by immunocytochemical controls.  相似文献

Low sperm concentration, increased fraction of morphologically abnormal sperm, and raised levels of markers of oxidative stress are often reported in the seminal plasma of infertile obese males. The precise reason for changes remains unknown. This short review summarises evidence from human and animal studies linking leptin to the reproductive dysfunction reported in obese males and presents a possible mechanism for this based on the available data in the literature. Serum leptin concentrations correlate positively with body fat mass but its precise link to semen abnormalities reported in obese males has yet to be conclusively established. Decreased sperm concentration, increased fraction of morphologically abnormal sperm and increased markers of oxidative stress have been reported following six weeks of daily leptin treatment to normal weight rats. In addition, decreased expression of endogenous antioxidant enzymes and increased expression of respiratory chain enzymes noted in the testes of leptin treated rats increases the propensity to oxidative stress. Besides that, leptin’s interference with histone to protamine transition in the DNA of sperm increases the susceptibility of sperm to free radical attack and may explain the often reported higher DNA fragmentation index in sperm of obese males. Concurrent supplementation of melatonin, a natural anti-oxidant, to these rats prevents the effects of leptin. The role of leptin in obesity-related reproductive dysfunction has to be considered seriously and these effects of leptin might involve increased oxidative stress.  相似文献

BACKGROUND TO THE DEBATE: Uganda is one of the few African countries where rates of HIV infection have fallen, from about 15 percent in the early 1990s to about five percent in 2001. At the end of 2005, UNAIDS estimated that 6.7 percent of adults were infected with the virus. The reasons behind Uganda's success have been intensely studied in the hope that other countries can emulate the strategies that worked. Some researchers credit the success to the Ugandan government's promotion of "ABC behaviors"--particularly abstinence and fidelity. Uganda receives funds from the United States President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, which promotes the ABC approach with a focus on abstinence-driven public health campaigns. Other researchers question whether the ABC approach was really responsible for the decline in HIV infection. Critics of the ABC approach also argue that by emphasizing abstinence over condom use, the approach leaves women at risk of infection, because in many parts of the world women are not empowered to insist on abstinence or fidelity.  相似文献

ABCG2 confers resistance to cancer cells by mediating the ATP-dependent outward efflux of chemotherapeutic compounds. Recent studies have indicated that the protein contains a number of interconnected drug binding sites. The present investigation examines the coupling of drug binding to ATP hydrolysis. Initial drug binding to the protein requires a high-affinity interaction with the drug binding site, followed by transition and reorientation to the low-affinity state to enable dissociation at the extracellular face. [3H]Daunomycin binding to the ABCG2 R482G isoform was examined in the nucleotide-bound and post-hydrolytic conformations. Binding of [3H]daunomycin was displaced by ATP analogues, indicating transition to a low-affinity conformation prior to hydrolysis. The low-affinity state was observed to be retained immediately post-hydrolysis. Therefore, the dissociation of phosphate and/or ADP is likely to be responsible for resetting of the transporter. The data indicate that, like ABCB1 and ABCC1, the 'power stroke' for translocation in ABCG2 R482G is the binding of nucleotide.  相似文献

The eastern part of the Black Sea and its tributaries are suitable habitats for several sturgeon species, among which Acipenser gueldenstaedtii, A. stellatus, A. nudiventris, A. persicus, A. sturio, and H. huso are well documented. However, different threats have led these species to a dramatic decline, all of them are currently listed as Critically Endangered, and some Locally Extinct, in that area. We tested 94 wild sturgeon samples from the Black Sea and Rioni River by analyzing the mitochondrial Control Region and nuclear markers for hybrid identification. The data analyses (1) assessed mitochondrial diversity among samples, (2) identified their species, as well as (3) indicated instances of hybridization. The data collected, besides confirming a sharp decrease of catches of Beluga and Stellate sturgeon in recent years, also revealed four juvenile hybrids between Russian and Stellate sturgeon, providing the first evidence of natural interspecific hybridization in the Rioni. The present communication raises concerns about the status of sturgeon species in this area and underlines the urgent need for conservation programs to restore self-sustaining populations.

Data from 59 sequences studied through pollen analysis were used to examine the decline in Alnus in Estonia during the Iron Age. Between a.d. 300 and 1300, the Alnus pollen frequency declined markedly in 30 records distributed evenly across the investigated area. The beginning of the decline was time transgressive, coincidental with the start of extensive cultivation, and was frequently connected with the commencement of rye cultivation and the availability of land suitable for cultivation. The greatest reduction in Alnus abundance occurred during the Late Iron Age between a.d. 900 and 1000. This spatially random asynchrony suggests that one or more factors affected Alnus populations across the whole northern region. Human impact is discussed as a plausible cause of the decline. To determine the initiation of extensive crop farming in the eastern Baltic area, pollen diagrams from Latvia, Lithuania and the Novgorod region were also examined.  相似文献

  • 1 Rare populational pulses of the sibling species of plant-hoppers Prokelisia dolus Wilson and P.marginata (Van Duzee) occur along the Gulf Coast of Florida. Densities at least three standard deviations ahove the average number of adult planthoppers per stem host plant are exhibited during these pulses.
  • 2 This context of rare local irruptions provides a basis for testing a component of T. C. R. White's hypothesis, which states that the trigger for insect outbreaks is an increase in the nutritional quality, in terms of available nitrogen, of host-plant tissue.
  • 3 In the field, over approximately five generations of these hoppers (9 months), we elevated foliar nitrogen in host plants substantially by fertilizing, six times, salt-marsh plots of 10 m2 with ammonium nitrate. No densities approaching a populational pulse occurred in either fertilized or unfertilized plots during the course of this study or in the year following. Fertilization did increase adult densities in the spring but this increase deteriorated over the summer months and was lost in the autumn. Host plants in fertilized plots retained high levels of nitrogen for at least the second year.
  • 4 Several very dense pulses, of more than thirty adult hoppers per stem, occurred at other sites during the course of this study. Host-plant nitrogen in a pulse site did not differ from that found in host plants immediately adjacent to the pulse. We conclude that increased foliar nitrogen is not the proximate cause of the populational pulse behaviour exhibited by these planthoppers.

Experimental data and clinical observations suggest that delaying childbearing influences the biology of the mother-fetus relationship, with a negative effect on fetal development and predisposition to severe diseases such as type 1 diabetes. We reason that advanced maternal age may influence intrauterine selection, favoring genotypes that are more adapted to the intrauterine environment of less young women. In the present study we have investigated the relationship of maternal age to HP genotype and PGM1-Rh area (chromosome 1) that have been previously found to be associated with fertility and developmental parameters. HP phenotype was determined in 679 consecutive puerperae from the population of central Italy. PGM1 phenotype and Rh C phenotype were determined in 222 puerperae and 200 newborns. The HP 1,1 phenotype decreases and the HP 2,2 phenotype increases with maternal age. The proportion of phenotypes carrying both the Rh C and PGM1*1 alleles is much higher in puerperae older than 36 years than in puerperae of age 22 years. The frequency of the PGM1*1-Rh C haplotype increases and the frequency of the PGM1*2-Rh C haplotype decreases with maternal age. The changes in these genetic systems with advancing maternal age are similar in mothers and newborns. The delay of childbearing age, associated in Western countries with the fertility transition in addition to detrimental effects on intrauterine development and increased susceptibility to severe disorders, could bring about changes in the genetic composition of a population.  相似文献
