From the early days of psychology, theorists have observed that parents sometimes transfer their own unfulfilled ambitions onto their child. We propose that parents are especially inclined to do so when they see their child as part of themselves, more so than as a separate individual. When parents see their child as part of themselves, their child’s achievements may easily come to function as a surrogate for parents’ own unfulfilled ambitions. In the present experiment, 73 parents (89% women, M age = 43 years) were randomly assigned to reflect on either their own or others’ unfulfilled ambitions. Results showed that, when faced with their own unfulfilled ambitions, parents who see their child as part of themselves want their child to fulfill their unfulfilled ambitions. This study provides the first experimental evidence to suggest that parents may desire their child to redeem their broken dreams.  相似文献

Enterococci have recently emerged as nosocomial pathogens. Their ubiquitous nature determines their frequent finding in foods as contaminants. In addition, the notable resistance of enterococci to adverse environmental conditions explains their ability to colonise different ecological niches and their spreading within the food chain through contaminated animals and foods. Enterococci can also contaminate finished products, such as fermented foods and, for this reason, their presence in many foods (such as cheeses and fermented sausages) can only be limited but not completely eliminated using traditional processing technologies. Enterococci are low grade pathogens but their intrinsic resistance to many antibiotics and their acquisition of resistance to the few antibiotics available for treatment in clinical therapy, such as the glycopeptides, have led to difficulties and a search for new drugs and therapeutic options. Enterococci can cause food intoxication through production of biogenic amines and can be a reservoir for worrisome opportunistic infections and for virulence traits. Clearly, there is no consensus on the acceptance of their presence in foodstuffs and their role as primary pathogens is still a question mark. In this review, the following topics will be covered: (i) emergence of the enterococci as human pathogens due to the presence of virulence factors such as the production of adhesins and aggregation substances, or the production of biogenic amines in fermented foods; (ii) their presence in foods; (iii) their involvement in food-borne illnesses; (iv) the presence, selection and spreading of antibiotic-resistant enterococci as opportunistic pathogens in foods, with particular emphasis on vancomycin-resistant enterococci.  相似文献

Many common devices can be used as biofeedback devices. The feedback use of the bathroom scale in rehabilitation medicine(physical therapy) has been explored with stroke patients. These patients used two scales, one under each foot, to relearn their sense of weight distribution. In addition, the scale was used to teach patients to shift their weight distribution from their knees to their hands as they learned to crawl, and from their feet to their buttocks and the chair as they learned to sit down.  相似文献

Predator and prey react to each other, adjusting their behavior to maximize their fitness and optimizing their food intake while keeping their predation risk as low as possible. In a pelagic environment, prey reduce their predation mortality by adopting a diel vertical migration (DVM) strategy, avoiding their predator during their peak performance by finding refuge in deep layers during daylight hours and feeding at the surface during the night. Due to the duality of the interaction between prey and predator, we used a game theory approach to investigate whether DVM can be a suitable strategy for the predator as well as the prey. We formulated three scenarios in plankton ecology in order to address this question. A novel finding is that mixed strategies emerge as optimal over a range of the parameter space, where part of the predator or prey population adopts a DVM while the rest adopt one or other “sit and wait” strategies.  相似文献

Masquerading animals have evolved striking visual resemblances to inanimate objects. These animals gain protection from their predators not simply by avoiding detection, but by causing their predators to misclassify them as the ‘models’ that they appear to resemble. Using domestic chicks as predators and twig-mimicking caterpillars as prey, we demonstrated that masquerading prey were more likely to be misclassified as their models when viewed in isolation from their models than when viewed alongside examples of their model, although they benefitted from masquerade to some extent in both conditions. From this, we predict a selection pressure on masqueraders to use microhabitats that reduce the risk of them being viewed simultaneously with examples of their model, and/or to more closely resemble their model in situations where simultaneous viewing is commonplace.  相似文献

Medical history and relationship to the medical conditions as well as to the music creativity and productivity of some of the classical European composers have been described. In this review article we analyzed their illnesses as well as association between physical or mental diseases and their creativity and adaptability to disease. Some classical composers suffered from organic diseases, while others complained of mental disturbances. However, in spite of their disorders, the intensity of their creativity mostly remained unchanged.  相似文献

Steroid binding proteins bind steroid hormones with high affinity and their function is to carry those hormones in the extracellular compartment. Since their discovery more than fifty years ago, many reports concerning their physicochemical structures and functions have contributed to the better understanding of those proteins. Recent advances in recombinant DNA technology have led to the availability of molecular probes for these proteins, and new approaches have been used to analyse their gene structures as well as the regulation of their synthesis. In the present report, we will review the new findings of the last five years which include the cloning and sequencing of the cDNAs and genes for corticosteroid binding globulin, testosterone estradiol binding globulin and androgen binding protein, as well as the tissue distribution and regulation of their mRNAs in normal tissues and cancer cell lines.  相似文献

Six soil isolates were grown on a petroleum sulfonate medium and analyzed chromatographically to determine their amino acid composition. The organisms were also examined to determine their growth rate in the petroleum medium, their per cent conversion of hydrocarbon to dry cell mass, their protein content, and their possible use as a food or food supplement. It was found that the isolates varied extensively as to their amino acid composition. Several of the isolates proved to convert the hydrocarbons to cell mass with relative ease. The proteins of four of the isolates appear to be suitable as a good food source, and the protein of one of the remaining isolates appears to be a very good food supplement.  相似文献

Video games have surged in popularity due to their entertainment factor and, with recent innovation, their use in health care. This review explores the dual facets of video games in treating vision impairment in amblyopia as well as their potential for overuse and addiction. Specifically, this review examines video game addiction from a biopsychosocial perspective and relates the addictive qualities of video games with their use as a therapeutic treatment for amblyopia. Current literature supports both the identification of video game addiction as a disease, as well as the therapeutic potential of video games in clinical trials. We show the need for clinicians to be aware of the dangers associated with video game overuse and the need for future studies to examine the risks associated with their health care benefits.  相似文献

A seminar of physiotherapists studied the psychological aspects of their work. Difficulty with doctors rather than patients was unexpectedly prominent. The following factors were identified as contributing to their dissatisfaction: doctors misused physiotherapy as a placebo in cases of incurable and untreatable disease and mental problems; because they faced questions about diagnosis and prognosis that doctors escaped they learnt to avoid knowing the facts about their patients; using quasiscientific apparatus had tended to replace physical contact; they saw their psychological skill as illicit and unprofessional; and they were uncertain about their role as social workers. Nevertheless, they tended to idealise doctors, which sharpened gratification in collaborative work and helped to alleviate anxiety about death and disease, but tended to reinforce sexual stereotyping and the image of physiotherapy as "unscientific," empirical, and intuititive ("feminine").  相似文献

Chromodomain/helicase/DNA-binding domain (CHD) proteins have been identified in a variety of organisms. Despite common features, such as their chromodomain and helicase domain, they have been described as having multiple roles and interacting partners. However, a common theme for the main role of CHD proteins appears to be linked to their ATP-dependent chromatin-remodeling activity. Their actual activity as either repressor or activator, and their cell or gene specificity, is connected to their interacting partner(s). In this minireview, we attempt to match the members of the CHD family with the presence of structural domains, cofactors, and cellular roles in the regulation of gene expression, recombination, genome organization, and chromatin structure, as well as their potential activity in RNA processing.  相似文献

An infant's own name is a unique social cue. Infants are sensitive to their own name by 4 months of age, but whether they use their names as a social cue is unknown. Electroencephalogram (EEG) was measured as infants heard their own name or stranger's names and while looking at novel objects. Event related brain potentials (ERPs) in response to names revealed that infants differentiate their own name from stranger names from the first phoneme. The amplitude of the ERPs to objects indicated that infants attended more to objects after hearing their own names compared to another name. Thus, by 5 months of age infants not only detect their name, but also use it as a social cue to guide their attention to events and objects in the world.  相似文献

Fullerenes are a new class of compounds with potential uses in biology and medicine and many insights were made in the knowledge of their interaction with various biological systems. However, their interaction with organised living systems as well as the site of their potential action remains unclear. In this work, we have demonstrated that a fullerene derivative could cross the external cellular membrane and it localises preferentially to the mitochondria. We propose that our finding supports the potential use of fullerenes as drug delivery agents as their structure mimics that of clathrin known to mediate endocytosis.  相似文献

Members of the genus Campylobacter are frequently responsible for human enteric disease with occasionally very serious outcomes. Much of this disease burden is thought to arise from consumption of contaminated poultry products. More than 80% of poultry in the UK harbour Campylobacter as a part of their intestinal flora. To address this unacceptably high prevalence, various interventions have been suggested and evaluated. Among these is the novel approach of using Campylobacter-specific bacteriophages, which are natural predators of the pathogen. To optimize their use as therapeutic agents, it is important to have a comprehensive understanding of the bacteriophages that infect Campylobacter, and how they can affect their host bacteria. This review will focus on many aspects of Campylobacter-specific bacteriophages including: their first isolation in the 1960s, their use in bacteriophage typing schemes, their isolation from the different biological sources and genomic characterization. As well as their use as therapeutic agents to reduce Campylobacter in poultry their future potential, including their use in bio-sanitization of food, will be explored. The evolutionary consequences of naturally occurring bacteriophage infection that have come to light through investigations of bacteriophages in the poultry ecosystem will also be discussed.  相似文献

Case histories of black Americans who believe their illness has been caused by sorcery have been reported with increasing frequency in the clinical literature. Such individuals often believe that their problems are not amenable to orthodox medical regimens and they may leave treatment to seek out a folk healer. Healers believed to be able to cure sorcery are viewed ambivalently as they are thought able to magically cause illness as well as cure it. There is little information available on such individuals or their modes of treatment, making it difficult to assess their abilities. This article reviews what is known about such individuals, including an attempt to learn more about those who have advertised in a large city newspaper. It is concluded that some of these individuals provide a useful service to their clients but that many others use their reputations as manipulators of occult powers to extract money from the poor and gullible.  相似文献

Desert ants (Cataglyphis fortis) navigate by a combination of path integration and landmark-based route memories. Their ability to correct sloped path segments to their ground distances enables them to orientate accurately even in undulating terrain. In this study, we tested whether or not ants incorporate vertical components of an itinerary into their route memory in similar ways as they do with visual landmarks and horizontal changes of direction. In two separate experiments, we trained desert ants to walk over artificial hills and later tested their acceptance of slopes within novel contexts. In the first paradigm, ants had to traverse a hill only on their outbound run, but not on their homebound trip. In a follow-up experiment, we confronted ramp-trained animals with descents in a completely new temporal and spatial context. The animals transferred their newly acquired acceptance of slopes from the outbound to the homebound run as well as to novel foraging trips. Cataglyphis obviously dissociates the experience of sloped path segments from the original context in which they appeared, thus reducing their significance as a navigational aid.  相似文献

The invasion of extravillous trophoblast cells into the maternal endometrium is one of the key events in human placentation. The ability of these cells to infiltrate the uterine wall and to anchor the placenta to it as well as their ability to infiltrate and to adjust utero-placental vessels to pregnancy depends, among other things, on their ability to secrete enzymes that degrade the extracellular matrix. Most of the latter enzymes belong to the family of matrix metalloproteinases. Their activity is regulated by the tissue inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinases. We have studied the distribution patterns of matrix metalloproteinases-1, -2, -3, and -9 and their inhibitors TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 as compared to the distribution of their substrates along the invasive pathway of extravillous trophoblast of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimester placentas by means of light microscopy on paraffin and cryostat sections as well as at the ultrastructural level (only 3rd trimester placenta). The comparison of different methods proved to be necessary, since the immunohistochemical distribution patterns of these soluble enzymes are considerably influenced by the pretreatment of tissues. All three methods revealed immunoreactivities of both, proteinases and their inhibitors, not only intracellularly in the extravillous trophoblast but also extracellularly in its surrounding matrix, the distribution patterns depending on the stage of pregnancy and on the degree of differentiation of trophoblast cells along their invasive pathway. Within the extracellular matrix, immunolocalization of matrix metalloproteinases as well as their inhibitors showed a specific relation to certain extracellular matrix molecules.  相似文献

Originally recognized as an essential part of the innate and acquired immune systems, macrophages emerged as omnipresent and influential regulators of embryo- and organo-genesis, as well as of tissue and tumor growth. Macrophages are present essentially in all tissues, beginning with embryonic development and, in addition to their role in host defense and in the clearance of apoptotic cells, are being increasingly recognized for their trophic function and role in regeneration. Some tissue macrophages are also found to possess a substantial potential for autonomous self-renewal. Macrophages are associated with a significant proportion of malignant tumors and are widely recognized for their angiogenesis-promoting and trophic roles, making them one of the new promising targets for cancer therapies. Recent expression profiling of embryonic macrophages from different tissues revealed remarkable consistency of their gene expression profiles, independent of their tissue of origin, as well as their similarities with tumor-associated macrophages. Macrophages are also capable of fusion with other cells in tissue repair and metastasizing tumors, as well as with each other in the immune response and osteoclastogenesis.  相似文献

This study assessed the performance of fishery cooperatives in six selected fishing areas along the central and southern Aegean coasts of Turkey during the 2002–2003 fishing season, in particular with regard to their stated objectives (e.g. member-fisher satisfaction recognition by fishery management authorities). A total of 127 member-fishers (72% of all active fishers in the study area) as well as fishery cooperative directors were interviewed. The results indicated the various strengths of these cooperatives as well as their limitations. Performance below full potential was due to internal factors such as lack of solidarity and qualified business management skills, as well as external factors relating to weak legislative support by the government, the tax system and the lack of training. However, through their contribution to local society and their function in assisting management bodies, cooperatives play a significant role in Turkish small-scale fisheries. They are therefore in need of further capacity building through specific encouragement from the government, academics, and fishers in order to improve their performance.  相似文献

During stem cell therapy, some issues, such as obscure fate of stem cells or their low survival rate in the body, should be addressed to boost their therapeutic efficiency. Nanotechnology offers a suitable solution to combat such limitations. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are carbon-based nanomaterials and may be used as multi-purpose compounds in stem cell therapy. CQDs are excellent choices for stem cell labeling thanks to their special features such as optical properties and good biocompatibility. Besides, they can modulate the biological function of stem cells, such as their proliferation, homing ability, and differentiation properties. Considering the charismatic feature of CQDs and their broad unique effect on stem cells, the current review aims to summarize the most advancements in this field. Hence, we first focused on CQDs synthesis and their applications. In the next section, the stem cell categories will be discussed, and the final part is dedicated to the recent research evaluating the impact of CQDs on stem cell therapy.  相似文献
