Measuring turbulent shear stresses is of major importance in artificial heart valve evaluation. Bi- and unidirectional fluid velocity measurements enable calculation of Reynolds shear stress (
) and Reynolds normal stress (
). τ is important due to the relation to hemolysis and thrombus formation, but σ is the only obtainable parameter in vivo. Therefore, determination of a correlation factor between τ and σ is pertinent. In a pulsatile flow model, laser Doppler (LDA) and hot-film (HFA) anemometry were used for simultaneous bi- and unidirectional fluid velocity measurements downstream of a Hall Kaster and a Hancock Porcine aortic valve. Velocities were registered in two flow field locations and at four cardiac outputs. The velocity signals were subjected to analog signal processing prior to digital turbulence analysis, as a basis for calculation of τ and σ.A correlation factor of 0.5 with a correlation coefficient of 0.97 was found between the maximum Reynolds shear stress and Reynolds normal stress, implying
. In vitro estimation of turbulent shear stresses downstream of artificial aortic valves, based on the axial velocity component alone, seems possible. 相似文献

Since artificial heart valve related complications such as thrombus formation, hemolysis and calcification are considered related to flow disturbances caused by the inserted valve, a thorough hemodynamic characterization of heart valve prostheses is essential. In a pulsatile flow model, fluid velocities were measured one diameter downstream of a Hancock Porcine (HAPO) and a Ionescu-Shiley Pericardial Standard (ISPS) aortic valve. Hot-film anemometry (HFA) was used for velocity measurements at 41 points in the cross-sectional area of the ascending aorta. Three-dimensional visualization of the velocity profiles, at 100 different instants during one mean pump cycle, was performed. Turbulence analysis was performed as a function of time by calculating the axial turbulence energy within 50 ms overlapping time windows during the systole. The turbulent shear stresses were estimated by using the correlation equation between Reynolds normal stress and turbulent (Reynolds) shear stress. The turbulent shear stress distribution was visualized by two-dimensional color-mapping at different instants during one mean pump cycle. Based on the velocity profiles and the turbulent shear stress distribution, a relative blood damage index (RBDI) was calculated. It has the feature of combining the magnitude and exposure time of the estimated shear stresses in one index, covering the entire cross-sectional area. The HAPO valve showed a skewed jet-type velocity profile with the highest velocities towards the left posterior aortic wall. The ISPS valve revealed a more parabolic-shaped velocity profile during systole. The turbulent shear stresses were highest in areas of high or rapidly changing velocity gradients. For the HAPO valve the maximum estimated turbulent shear stress was 194 N m-2 and for the ISPS valve 154 Nm-2. The RBDI was the same for the two valves. The turbulent shear stresses had magnitudes and exposure times that might cause endothelial damage and sublethal or lethal damage to blood corpuscules. The RBDI makes comparison between different heart valves easier and may prove important when making correlation with clinical observations. 相似文献

In a pulsatile flow model aortic Bj?rk-Shiley Standard, Convex-Concave and Monostrut valves were investigated together with the Hall-Kaster (Medtronic-Hall), St Jude Medical and Starr-Edwards Silastic Ball valve using hot-film anemometry. Three-dimensional visualization of average systolic Reynolds normal stresses (RNS) reflected the design of the valves. Mean average RNS were used for comparison of the fluid dynamic performance along with Velocity Energy Ratio (VER100) and Turbulence Energy Ratio (TER) as a relative turbulence intensity for pulsatile flow. Mean average RNS ranged from 13.2 to 37.6 Nm-2 for all the valves with the highest levels for the Bj?rk-Shiley Standard and Starr-Edwards Ball valve and lowest values for the St Jude Medical valve and with the Hall-Kaster (Medtronic-Hall), Bj?rk-Shiley Convex-Concave and Monostrut valves in between. 相似文献

Three-dimensional visualization of velocity fields downstream of six mechanical aortic valves in a pulsatile flow model 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Velocity fields downstream of 27 mm Bj?rk-Shiley Standard, Bj?rk-Shiley Convex-Concave, Bj?rk-Shiley Monostrut, Hall-Kaster (Medtronic-Hall), St. Jude Medical and Starr-Edwards Silastic Ball aortic valves were studied in a pulsatile mock circulation. Stroke volume was 70 cm3 and frequency 71 min-1 and 88 min-1. Fluid velocity was measured by a catheter mounted hot-film anemometer probe in a glycerol water mixture one and two diameters downstream of the aortic valve. Velocity fields were dynamically visualized by a three-dimensional technique and revealed qualitative independence of frequency. All profiles were flat in the acceleration phase of systole. From peak systole and throughout the systolic deceleration phase profiles characteristic of the individual valves appeared. The pivoting and tilting disc valves caused a skewed velocity profile with highest velocities downstream of the major orifice and lowest velocities downstream of the minor orifice. The differences between the three investigated Bj?rk-Shiley valves were remarkable. The St. Jude Medical valve generated velocity peaks downstream of the two major orifices and the central slit, and lower velocities in the hinge areas. A rather flat profile with central hollowing was seen downstream of the Starr-Edwards Ball valve. All velocity profiles were more or less dampened two diameters downstream. 相似文献

This paper deals with a mathematical attempt to determine the wall shear during normal flow of blood in the ascending and the descending thoracic aorta. A simple model is used, but the results obtained are in agreement with published experimental results for the descending thoracic aorta. It is suggested that the degree of fluctuation in the pressure gradient at a given station is the major factor in determining the level of wall shear at that point. 相似文献

In this work, estimates of turbulence were made from pulsatile flow laser Doppler velocimetry measurements using traditional phase averaging and averaging after the removal of cyclic variation. These estimates were compared with estimates obtained from steady leakage flow LDV measurements and an analytical method. The results of these studies indicate that leakage jets which are free and planar in shape may be more unstable than other leakage jets, and that cyclic variation does not cause a gross overestimation of the Reynolds stresses at large distances from the leakage jet orifice. 相似文献

The shear stress at the wall has been of interest as one of the possible fluid dynamic factors that may be damaging in the region of prosthetic valves. The purpose of this study was to measure the axial wall shear stresses in the region of a 29 mm tissue annulus diameter porcine stent mounted prosthetic aortic valve (Hancock, Model 242). Studies were performed in an in vitro pulse duplicating system. The axial wall shear stress was calculated from velocities obtained near the wall with a laser Doppler anemometer. The largest axial wall shear stress was 29 dyn cm-2 and it occurred at the highest stroke volume used (80 ml). At a stroke volume of 50 ml, the largest axial wall shear stress was 17 dyn cm-2 and at a stroke volume of 35 ml, it was 15 dyn cm-2. Stresses of these magnitudes are far below those reported to be damaging to the endothelial surface. These stresses may be high enough, however, to affect platelet function. 相似文献

Regions of turbulence downstream of bioprosthetic heart valves may cause damage to blood components, vessel wall as well as to aortic valve leaflets. Stentless aortic heart valves are known to posses several hemodynamic benefits such as larger effective orifice areas, lower aortic transvalvular pressure difference and faster left ventricular mass regression compared with their stented counterpart. Whether this is reflected by diminished turbulence formation, remains to be shown. We implanted either stented pericardial valve prostheses (Mitroflow), stentless valve prostheses (Solo or Toronto SPV) in pigs or they preserved their native valves. Following surgery, blood velocity was measured in the cross sectional area downstream of the valves using 10MHz ultrasonic probes connected to a dedicated pulsed Doppler equipment. As a measure of turbulence, Reynolds normal stress (RNS) was calculated at two different blood pressures (baseline and 50% increase). We found no difference in maximum RNS measurements between any of the investigated valve groups. The native valve had significantly lower mean RNS values than the Mitroflow (p=0.004), Toronto SPV (p=0.008) and Solo valve (p=0.02). There were no statistically significant differences between the artificial valve groups (p=0.3). The mean RNS was significantly larger when increasing blood pressure (p=0.0006). We, thus, found no advantages for the stentless aortic valves compared with stented prosthesis in terms of lower maximum or mean RNS values. Native valves have a significantly lower mean RNS value than all investigated bioprostheses. 相似文献

With the development of the in vitro testing of heart valves, the standardization of the test methods becomes increasingly important and they should also be improved continuously. This paper discusses the problems of waveform comparison and average value dispositions. In the pulsatile model driven by pneumatics, the pressures before and after the valve, and the flow through it, are measured as three one-dimensional variates. The mean values are calculated according to the FDA and the ISO. A comparison and analysis of experimental waveforms indicate that, for basically the same ranges of pressures and flow rate, the flow curves of different types of valve are clearly different. The mean values and the waveforms in the time domain should be taken into consideration synthetically so that the pusatile characteristics of the valve can be more completely reflected. Using numerical filtering methods to treat the waveforms allows for better comparisons between the measured results taken from the different devices. By means of the constellation graphical method for treating mean values as multivariates, it is feasible to classify the valves and to judge their qualities under conditions of pulsatile flow. 相似文献

Pulsatile turbulent flow in stenotic vessels has been numerically modeled using the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation approach. The commercially available computational fluid dynamics code (CFD), FLUENT, has been used for these studies. Two different experiments were modeled involving pulsatile flow through axisymmetric stenoses. Four different turbulence models were employed to study their influence on the results. It was found that the low Reynolds number k-omega turbulence model was in much better agreement with previous experimental measurements than both the low and high Reynolds number versions of the RNG (renormalization-group theory) k-epsilon turbulence model and the standard k-epsilon model, with regard to predicting the mean flow distal to the stenosis including aspects of the vortex shedding process and the turbulent flow field. All models predicted a wall shear stress peak at the throat of the stenosis with minimum values observed distal to the stenosis where flow separation occurred. 相似文献

Numerical predictions of blood flow patterns and hemodynamic stresses in Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAAs) are performed in a two-aneurysm, axisymmetric, rigid wall model using the spectral element method. Physiologically realistic aortic blood flow is simulated under pulsatile conditions for the range of time-averaged Reynolds numbers 50< or =Re(m)< or =300, corresponding to a range of peak Reynolds numbers 262.5< or =Re(peak) < or = 1575. The vortex dynamics induced by pulsatile flow in AAAs is characterized by a sequence of five different flow phases in one period of the flow cycle. Hemodynamic disturbance is evaluated for a modified set of indicator functions, which include wall pressure (p(w)), wall shear stress (tau(w)), and Wall Shear Stress Gradient (WSSG). At peak flow, the highest shear stress and WSSG levels are obtained downstream of both aneurysms, in a pattern similar to that of steady flow. Maximum values of wall shear stresses and wall shear stress gradients obtained at peak flow are evaluated as a function of the time-average Reynolds number resulting in a fourth order polynomial correlation. A comparison between predictions for steady and pulsatile flow is presented, illustrating the importance of considering time-dependent flow for the evaluation of hemodynamic indicators. 相似文献

The velocity fields downstream of four prosthetic heart valves were mapped in vitro over the entire cross-section of a model aortic root using laser Doppler anemometry. THe Bj?rk-Shiley 60 degrees convexo-concave tilting disc valve, the Smeloff-Cutter caged ball valve, the St. Jude Medical bileaflet valve, and the Ionescu-Shiley standard bioprosthesis were examined under both steady and pulsatile flows. Velocity profiles under steady flow conditions were a good approximation for pulsatile profiles only during midsystole. The pulsatile flow characteristics of the four valves showed variation in large scale flow structures. Comparison of the valves according to pressure drop, shear stress and maximum velocities are also provided. 相似文献

Two-component laser velocimeter measurements downstream of heart valve prostheses in pulsatile flow 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Elevated turbulent shear stresses resulting from disturbed blood flow through prosthetic heart valves can cause damage to red blood cells and platelets. The purpose of this study was to measure the turbulent shear stresses occurring downstream of aortic prosthetic valves during in-vitro pulsatile flow. By matching the indices of refraction of the blood analog fluid and model aorta, correlated, simultaneous two-component laser velocimeter measurements of the axial and radial velocity components were made immediately downstream of two aortic prosthetic valves. Velocity data were ensemble averaged over 200 or more cycles for a 15-ms window opened at peak systolic flow. The systolic duration for cardiac flows of 8.4 L/min was 200 ms. Ensemble-averaged total shear stress levels of 2820 dynes/cm2 and 2070 dynes/cm2 were found downstream of a trileaflet valve and a tilting disk valve, respectively. These shear stress levels decreased with axial distance downstream much faster for the tilting disk valve than for the trileaflet valve. 相似文献

The frequency response of surface-mounted electrochemical mass transfer probes used to deduce wall shear rates has been investigated experimentally for the case of fully developed laminar pulsatile flow in a straight tube. Generally good agreement is found with the asymptotic results obtained by Lighthill's methods. The significance of the results with regard to the investigation of models of pulsatile flows of physiological interest is discussed. It is concluded that the frequency-dependent phase and amplitude corrections required to obtain accurate wall shear measurements are of such magnitudes as to render impractical the use of electrochemical probes to determine wall shear rates in these flows. 相似文献

In vitro pulsatile flow velocity and shear stress measurements in the vicinity of mechanical mitral heart valve prostheses 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A three beam laser Doppler anemometer system was used to study the flow fields created by various types of mitral heart valve prostheses under physiological pulsatile flow conditions. The prosthetic valves studied were: Beall caged disc valve, Bjork-Shiley tilting disc valve, Medtronic-Hall tilting disc valve and St. Jude bileaflet valve. The results indicate that all four prosthetic valve designs studied create very disturbed flow fields with elevated turbulent shear stresses and regions of flow separation and/or stagnation. The observed elevated turbulent shear stresses could cause sublethal and/or lethal damage to red cells and platelets. The regions of flow separation and/or stagnation, could lead to thrombus formation and/or tissue overgrowth on the valve structure, as observed on clinically recovered prosthetic valves. 相似文献

Arteries of several species, including man, tend to adjust their diameters such that the mean wall shear stress is in the range of 10-20 dynes cm-2. Additionally, intimal thickening in the human carotid bifurcation correlates well with the reciprocal of wall shear stress as determined in model studies. The correlation indicates that wherever the local mean wall shear stress exceeds approximately 10 dynes cm-2, the artery tends to be spared from intimal thickening. However, it is not known whether mean shear stress, i.e. the time-averaged value, or the instantaneous shear stress is the appropriate correlative variable. Each of these variables suggests different mechanisms for the reaction of the artery wall to its hemodynamic environment. It is therefore important to devise means by which the effects of mean shear and pulsatile shear can be separated in the study of atherogenesis. The present investigation examines the post-stenotic flow field in Plexiglas models under pulsatile conditions approximating those in the aortas of the cynomolgus monkey, an animal often employed in atherogenesis research. Behavior of the core flow and its effects on wall shear stress are studied for stenoses of 75 and 90% area reductions using laser velocimetry. The results show that the post-stenotic field contains regions in which the mean wall shear stress is low, but the pulsatile excursions are large.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

The structure of pulsatile flow in a rigid aortic bifurcation model was studied by means of a flow visualization technique and three-dimensional laser-Doppler anemometry. The model was made of glass, having the same shape as that of the average human aortic bifurcation. It was installed into a mock circulatory loop that generated physiological pulsatile flow. Flow separation was observed during accelerated and decelerated flow periods. Double helical flow existed inside the flow separation in the early accelerated flow period. In the decelerated flow period, disturbed flow appeared behind the separation zone. Flow was strongly disturbed during the back flow period, and then was gradually stabilized in the forward flow period. The flow separation and the disturbances released from the flow separation zone greatly influenced near-wall velocities along the lateral wall. The wave form of the near-wall velocity in the flow separation zone was much different from that observed in the aortic portion and behind the separation zone; for example, the magnitude of the negative peak velocity in the direction of the tube axis was larger than that of the positive one, and mean velocity in a cycle was very low. This abnormal phasic change of the near-wall velocity may be associated with atherogenesis. The three-dimensional velocity measurement is very useful for the detailed analysis of near-wall velocity patterns. 相似文献

Experimental results are presented on physiological pulsatile flow past caged ball and tilting disc aortic valve prostheses mounted in an axisymmetric chamber incorporated in a mock circulatory system. The measurements of velocity profiles and turbulent normal stresses during several times in a cardiac cycle were obtained using laser-Doppler anemometry. Our results show that with increased angle of opening for the tilting disc valves, a large but locally confined vortex is observed along the wall in the minor flow region throughout most of the cardiac cycle. The turbulent normal stresses measured downstream to the tilting disc in the minor flow region parallel to the tilt axis were found to be larger than those measured downstream to the caged ball valves. Comparison of measurements with steady flow at flow rates comparable to peak pulsatile flow rate show that the turbulent normal stresses are larger by a factor of two in pulsatile flow with a frequency of 1.2 Hz. 相似文献
