Summary Growth ofOphicephalus striatus was studied from zones on the scales as these were found to be suitable for age determination. Lenght estimates obtained from the scale reading were further substantiated by back-calculations. Thevon Bertalanffy equation was employed to find out theoretical values of length in respect of various year classes. The theoretical values agreed with the observed values very closely.Length-weight relationship showed that the weight of fish increases slightly faster than the cube of the length. Thevon Bertalanffy equation gave a good fit to weight-age data.  相似文献

Marine pufferfish (family Tetraodontidae) are believed to accumulate tetrodotoxin (TTX) mainly in liver and ovary through the food chain by ingesting TTX-bearing organisms such as starfish, gastropods, crustacean, flatworms, ribbonworms, etc. Consequently, it is hypothesized that non-toxic pufferfish can be produced if they are cultured with TTX-free diets in netcages at sea or aquaria on land, where the invasion of TTX-bearing organisms is completely shut off. To confirm this hypothesis, more than 5000 specimens of the pufferfish (“torafugu”, Takifugu rubripes) cultured in such manners for 1–3 years were collected from several locations in Japan during 2001–2004, and toxicity of their livers and some other parts was examined according to the Japanese official mouse assay method for TTX. In addition, typical specimens were submitted to LC/MS analysis. The results showed that all the livers and other parts tested were ‘non-toxic’ in both of the mouse assay (less than 2 MU/g) and LC/MS analysis (less than 0.1 MU/g). Thus, it is undoubtedly confirmed that pufferfish are intoxicated through the food chain, and non-toxic pufferfish can be successfully produced by netcage or land culture. The livers from these fish can be used with safety as a Japanese traditional food “fugu-kimo” (puffer liver).  相似文献

Food selection and growth of young snakehead Channa striatus were studied in the laboratory and in a field trial. In the laboratory, first-feeding snakehead larvae of 6–7 mm total length (TL) with a mouth opening of 0.55 mm selected for Artemia nauplii, and against formulated feed. Fish began feeding on formulated feed at 12mm TL when their mouth width reached 1.0mm. In both laboratory and field trials, snakehead diets changed as fish size increased. For fish 15–20 mm TL, cladocerans and copepods were 96.5% of their diet. With fish 30–40 mm TL, zooplankton consumption was greatly reduced while benthic organism consumption increased. Fish 45–50 mm TL fed exclusively on benthic invertebrates. Diet shift from zoo-plankton to benthic invertebrates was not due to reduced zoo-plankton availability, but was instead related to changes in gill raker structure. Low density of benthic invertebrates in the field trial caused reduced fish growth rates when fish switched diets from zooplankton to benthos. Our results indicate that snake-head can take Artemia nauplii as a larval starter food, then accept formulated feed at ≥12 mm TL. Zooplankton can serve as food for snakehead < 40 mm, but formulated feed should be provided for larger fish which are unable to catch zoo-plankton.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. In this study the characteristics of the synthesis of DNA and RNA in the nuclei of Loxodes were investigated. Loxodes striatus is a primitive ciliate with 2 pairs of structurally differentiated diploid nuclei, the macro- and micronuclei. The macronuclei are differentiated morphologically into a clearly recognizable central core and an outer zone. To determine DNA and RNA synthesis, individual organisms were analyzed by autoradiography after incubating groups of cells with a 3H-labeled precursor ([3H]thymidine for DNA and [3H]uridine for RNA). The following observations were made: (A) All portions of macro- and micronuclei appeared to contain DNA as judged by the localizations of incorporated [3H]thymidine. (B) The macro- and micronuclei did not synthesize DNA at the same time; moreover, the duration of DNA synthesis in the former was much longer than of the latter nucleus. (C) Replication of DNA in the inner core and outer zone of the macronucleus occurred at separate times with little if any overlap. (D) All of the detectable [3H]uridine incorporation was found in the macronucleus and none in the micronucleus. Within the macro-nucleus the central core was more heavily labeled. (E) The quantitative differences in the label of the different components of the nuclear complex were investigated. (F) Contrary to the previously reported information our results suggest that DNA synthesis can occur in adult macronuclei. The possible explanation of these results is discussed in the context of the nuclear evolution of ciliates and of recent information on nuclear differentiation.  相似文献

We evaluated the effect of dietary starch level on growth performance, feed utilization, whole-body composition and activity of selected key enzymes of intermediary metabolism in gilthead sea bream juveniles reared at 18 and 25 degrees C. A diet was formulated to contain 48% crude protein, 12% lipids and 30% gelatinized maize starch (diet 30GS). Two other diets were formulated to include the same level of ingredients as diet 30GS except for the gelatinized starch, which was included at 20% (diet 20GS) or 10% (diet 10GS). No adjustment to diet composition was otherwise made. Each diet was fed to triplicate groups of gilthead sea bream (30 g initial mass) for 8 weeks, on a pair-feeding scheme. The higher temperature improved growth performance but the opposite was true for feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio. Independently of temperature, growth performance, feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio were lower in fish fed diet 30GS. No effect of temperature or dietary starch level on whole-body composition was noticed. Hepatosomatic index and liver glycogen were higher at 18 degrees C and, within each temperature, in fish fed diet 30GS. Glycemia was not affected by temperature, but was lower in fish fed diet 10GS. Data on enzyme activities showed that increasing water temperature enhances liver glucokinase (GK) and pyruvate kinase (PK) activities, suggesting that gilthead sea bream is more apt to use dietary starch at higher temperatures. No effect of temperature was noticed on hexokinase (HK), fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase (FBPase), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) and glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) activities. Dietary starch enhanced PK and FBPase activities while depressed GDH activity, suggesting a lack of significant regulation of hepatic glucose utilization and production in this species. HK, GK and G6PD activities were unaffected by dietary composition. Irrespectively of water temperature, gelatinized starch may be included up to 20% in diets for gilthead sea bream juveniles; at higher dietary levels, growth and efficiency of feed utilization are depressed.  相似文献

Samples from 24 aquaria were incubated at 28, 37, and 45 degrees C for the isolation of Naegleria and Acanthamoeba. Naegleria was the predominant genus (60.9%), whereas Acanthamoeba represented 15.5% of the isolates. No pathogenic N. fowleri was identified, although a high number of strains were closely related to this species. One isolate (Aq/9/1/45D) was compared with an aquarium isolate (PPMFB-6) from Australia. The Belgian isolate was found to be more related to N. fowleri, whereas the Australian isolate was closer to N. gruberi.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to investigate possible stressful effects on European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax reared under constant darkness (0L‐24D) and to examine the possible anti‐stressful effect of dietary tryptophan (TRP) supplementation. Juvenile European sea bass (initial body weight 4.23 ± 0.032 g) were reared for 10 weeks under 0L‐24D and 12L‐12D and fed either a commercial diet (0.47% TRP) or the same diet supplemented with L‐TRP (2.47% TRP). Results showed that lighting conditions had no significant effect on fish growth, while a depressive effect by the TRP supplementation was obvious. All fish populations reared under 0L‐24D exhibited reduced body protein, lipid and ash content and increased food consumption. Reduced body lipids, food consumption and nutrient utilization were observed in TRP‐supplemented fed fish, along with lower liver lipids. Dietary TRP enrichment significantly lowered liver saturated and monounsaturated acids and increased poly‐ and highly‐unsaturated fatty acids, especially in combination with 0L‐24D. These changes were also considerably reflected in carcass fatty acid composition.  相似文献

The relative activity of a number of different enzymes has been determined in different developmental stages of normal and Li treated sea urchin eggs.Some enzymes show a constant activity throughout development, whereas the activity of other enzymes is constant up to mesenchymeblastula stage and then increases. A short review of enzymatic changes in other embryonic material is presented. This demonstrated a striking agreement with the sea urchin egg in essential points.It has been suggested that the enzymes which rise in activity at mesenchymeblastula stage are localized in mitochondria, whereas enzymes with constant activity are non-mitochondrial.Li treatment during cleavage stages, which causes vegetalization, inhibits the rise in activity of apyrase, cathepsin II, glutaminase, and according to preliminary experiments also of succinodehydrogenase.The authors conclude that Li treatment during cleavage stages interferes with the later development of mitochondria, possibly by inhibiting the development of their precursors.According to these results, the ectodermal development is characterized by a more important mitochondrial activity, i.e. a more elaborate mechanism of synthesis, than the mesentodermal development. This is at least the case during earlier stages of development.  相似文献

Synopsis Parental care of Tilapia mariae was observed in nature (Ethiop River, Nigeria) and in aquaria with or without intruders present. In the field, 25–30% of nests are guarded by one parent, normally the female. It is assumed that most missing males have deserted. Males who participate in brood care exhibit both close brood guarding and brood defence at a lower level than females, and hence seem to invest less than females. Broods were guarded under three distinct types: (1) female at the brood, male in surroundings, (2) parents take turns, or (3) parents stay together at the brood. Each pair used predominantly one type until the young swam freely, thereafter type 3. Females defended most in type 3, but male attack rate did not differ among the types. Type 3 seems related to increased risk of brood predation and type 2 to the female's foraging needs, being more common when she is small and the mates do not differ much in size. The unequal guarding times of type 1 indicate rather a low parental investment by the male (and thus risk of desertion) than specialization in roles on equal investment basis. Parental behaviour exhibited in aquaria differed in many ways from that in nature. The role types were indistinct and there were more signs of motivational conflict between the mates. Isolated pairs avoided joint guarding in the embryo period and while switching, female turns were much longer than male turns, unlike in nature. When intruders were added, males attacked them more than did females.  相似文献

Shoals of hatchery‐reared and wild sea bass juveniles Dicentrarchus labrax were tested for differences in their antipredator responses towards a potential live predator, the eel Anguilla anguilla . Eight experimental shoals ( i.e . replicates), each composed of 15 individuals from the same stock of juveniles ( i.e . wild or hatchery), were video recorded for 5 min before and after predator exposure. A set of behavioural variables were measured during the pre‐stimulus and stimulus phases of each test and compared between the two groups of replicates. Results showed that in both hatchery‐reared and wild juveniles predator exposure elicited a significant increase in the mean level of shoal cohesiveness and mean shoal distance from the predator, and a significant decrease in the mean shoal distance from the bottom. Shoals of wild juveniles, however, aggregated more quickly and reached higher shoal cohesiveness within the first 20 s of the stimulus period than shoals of hatchery‐reared fish. During this period, the wild fish also reached the highest peak in shoal cohesiveness, which then decreased gradually towards the levels observed before predator exposure. Another component of the antipredator response, the predator inspection behaviour, was fully developed in both wild and hatchery fish. Wild fish, however, tended to inspect the predator at a closer distance than hatchery fish.  相似文献

The phototropic response of Spirogyra sp. filaments and its relation with the different phases of their diurnal movements were studied. The filaments rapidly responded to unilateral irradiation; curvature towards the light source began in their tip region but shifted down to more basal regions. However, this typical and steady phototropic curvature could be observed only in the GnSt phase of the diurnal movement. In the other phases competitive states between the phototropic movement and other kinds of movement were evident. Thus, from the results of our previous and present studies it is proposed that the diurnal movement of Spirogyra filaments is composed of various individual movements, including a phototropic one; among these movements there exists a certain balance determined by the culture conditions and the time of day, and the phototropic movement is relatively inferior to the other movements.Abbreviations Gn negative gravitropism - Gp positive gravitropism - Sh shrinking (spiralling) growth - St straight form of growth V=Tanaka et al. The seasonal growth trajectories of wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar juveniles by age group within the Margaree River, Canada, are described. Circuli counts from scales were used to infer growth rates at different ages and these were used to predict the proportions of age 2‐ and 3‐year old smolts from different portions of the watershed. In the wild Atlantic salmon juveniles from the Margaree River, there was no bimodality in fork length frequencies and no 1 year old smolts were produced. Water temperature differences during the growing season were insufficient to explain the differences in growth rates and size at age among the sites sampled. There was a positive association between the growth rate in the first year and the subsequent age at smoltification. In the Margaree River, differences in tributary specific growth rates and size at age were expected to produce important differences in the relative ages at smoltification.  相似文献

This paper interprets and discusses the usefulness of otolith microstructure for ageing Japanese sea bass ( Lateolabrax japonicus ) larvae and juveniles. Samples were collected from the Tango Sea along the Japan Sea coast, January–March 2007. Known-age (0-day and 10-day-old) larvae were obtained from the Ibaragi Prefectural Hatchery, Japan. Sagittal and lapillar otolith were processed and read using an otolith reading system. Clearly discernible hatch- and first-feeding marks were evident on sagitta, and development of accessory premordia (AP) appeared to be associated with larva-juvenile transition; however, no other marks indicating metamorphosis or settlement were evident. In lapillus, no discernible check mark was found. Known-age larvae showed that deposition of the first daily increment (DI) corresponded to first-feeding, which occurred at day-4 post-hatch. However, mean increment counts were significantly lower in lapillus than in sagitta, caused by poorly expressed increments around the centrum as well as relatively unclear centrum of the lapillus. The authors suggest that the use of lapillus can cause significant underestimation of age. Therefore, the sagitta is recommended for age and growth estimations of larvae and juveniles, although the presence of numerous subdaily increments warrants careful preparation and interpretation of the microstructure. A test for asymmetry showed the right and left otoliths to be quite symmetrical and their DI counts not significantly different, suggesting that either otolith can be used for studying age and growth of Japanese sea bass larvae and juveniles.  相似文献

Circadian rhythmicity in the behaviour of the marine prawn, Metapenaeus monoceros (Fab) and its substratum preference has been observed under laboratory conditions. In the morning at 9. a.m. 80% prawns remain buried and in the afternoon at 3 p.m. 60% burrowing was observed. A contrasting situation was observed in the night i.e. 17% burrowing at 9 p.m. and 30% burrowing at 3 a.m. was registered. In the second set of experiments juveniles were subjected to four types of substrata viz. mud, black fine sand, white coarse sand and stones. It was noted that M. monoceros showed more affinity towards the mud and less preference to other substrata. Synopsis Male weakfish,Cynoscion regalis, were collected in the south-west portion of Delaware Bay from April through August of 1992. Histological examination of testes collected from these specimens was used as a baseline for comparison with laboratory data. Weakfish testes were found to be of the unrestricted, continuous spermatogenic type and spermatogenesis was apparently prenuptial. The effects of photoperiod and temperature on gonadal maturation were studied in the laboratory using fish collected in June and July 1991. These fish were exposed to two months of simulated winter conditions prior to assignment to one of four experimental photoperiod/temperature regimes. The treatments included combinations of long day (LD,15 h light) or short day (SD, 9 h light) and high (HT, 20° C) or low (LT, 13° C) water temperatures. The four treatment groups were LD/HT, LD/LT, SD/HT, SD/LT. The LD/HT group was the only one to mature fully, expressing increased plasma androgen levels, increased gonadosomatic index (GSI) and advanced spermatogenesis, as well as hypertrophy of the sonic muscles, a seasonally expressed secondary sexual characteristic of male weakfish. High temperatures promoted the later stages of spermatogenesis, which were apparently inhibited by low temperatures. The presence of an endogenous annual cycle is suggested by the partial maturation of the testes and sonic muscles in all treatment groups, regardless of photoperiod/temperature regime.  相似文献
