1. Bacterial production in the 0–30 m water column of Loch Ness was measured using a dual labelling procedure with [3H] thymidine and [14C] leucine between May 1993 and June 1994. In most cases the uptake of the two labels did not covary, suggesting unbalanced growth. Rates of bacterial production varied from undetectable to 46.2 μg C l–1 day–1. Highest production coincided with the period of highest primary production, but carbon derived from this source was insufficient to meet the bacterial carbon demand, which was met by allochthonous humic inputs to the system.
2. Heterotrophic flagellate (HNAN) grazing rates, measured using fluorescently labelled bacteria, ranged between 10.3 and 24.5 bacteria cell–1 day–1 at temperatures between 5 and 15 °C. They removed up to 27% of the bacterial production per day.
3. Heterotrophic flagellate specific growth rates ranged from 0.043 to 0.093 h–1 between 5 and 15 °C, giving generation times of 7.4–16.1 h.

1. The horizontal distribution of plankton in Loch Ness, a deep, oligotrophic lake with a simple trench morphometry, was studied on three occasions in 1993. Samples were collected from ten stations spaced along the length of the loch and the abundance of algae, bacteria, protozoa, rotifers and crustacean zooplankton was determined. 2. Horizontal variability was found to be greatest for the metazoan zooplankton and for the algae, especially two cryptomonad flagellates. Bacteria and heterotrophic protozoa showed relatively little horizontal variability. The degree of horizontal variability was not sufficient seriously to affect studies of the seasonality of plankton abundance conducted from a single sampling station. 3. Gradients of plankton distribution along the length of the loch were dependent on the recent wind history. The direction of the gradient could readily reverse with a shift in wind direction. These results indicate that the horizontal distribution of plankton in Loch Ness is more dependent on wind-induced water circulation patterns than on differential growth of plankton in water masses of differing chemistry.  相似文献

  • 1 The underwater light climate in Loch Ness is described in terms of mixing depth (Zm) and depth of the euphoric zone (Zeu). During periods of complete mixing, Zm equates with the mean depth of the loch (132 m), but even during summer stratification the morphometry of the loch and the strong prevailing winds produce a deep thermocline and an epilimnetic mixed layer of about 30 m or greater. Hence, throughout the year the quotient Zm/Zeu is exceptionally high and the underwater light climate particularly unfavourable for phytoplankton production and growth.
  • 2 Phytoplankton biomass expressed as chlorophyll a is very low in Loch Ness, with a late summer maximum of less than 1.5 mg chlorophyll a m-3 in the upper 30 m of the water column. This low biomass and the resulting very low photosynthetic carbon fixation within the water column are evidence that a severe restraint is imposed on the rate at which phytoplankton can grow in the loch.
  • 3 The chlorophyll a content per unit of phytoplankton biovolume and the maximum, light-saturated specific rate of photosynthesis are both parameters which might be influenced by the light climate under which the phytoplankton have grown. However, values obtained from Loch Ness for both chlorophyll a content (mean 0.0045 mg mm-3) and maximum photosynthetic rate (1–4 mg C mg Chla-1 h-1) are within the range reported from other lakes.
  • 4 Laboratory bioassays with the natural phytoplankton community from Loch Ness on two occasions in late summer when the light climate in the loch is at its most favourable, suggest that even then limitation of phytoplankton growth is finely balanced between light and phosphorus limitation. Hence, for most of the year, when the light climate is less favourable, phytoplankton growth will be light limited.
  • 5 Quotients relating mean annual algal biomass as chlorophyll a (c. 0.5 mg Chla m-3) and the probable annual specific areal loading of total phosphorus (0.4–1.7 g TP m-2 yr-1) suggest that the efficiency with which phytoplankton is produced in Loch Ness per unit of TP loading is extremely low when compared with values from other Scottish lochs for which such an index has been calculated. This apparent inefficiency can be attributed to suppression of photosynthetic productivity in the water column due to the unfavourable underwater light climate.
  • 6 These several independent sources of evidence lead to the conclusion that phytoplankton development in Loch Ness is constrained by light rather than by nutrients. Loch Ness thus appears to provide an exception to the generally accepted paradigm that phytoplankton development in lakes of an oligotrophic character is constrained by nutrient availability.

Population dynamics of bacterioplankton in an oligotrophic lake   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The population ecology of bacterioplankton was studied overa 3 year period in Mirror Lake, an oligotrophic lake in thenortheastern USA. Bacterial population density, biomass, andrates of biomass production in the epilimnion and hypolimnionwere examined for their relationship with several environmentalparameters. Bacterioplankton density fluctuated between 0.5and 7 x l0 bacteria ml–1, with highest values in the anoxichypolimnion. At all depths there was a trend towards a higherdensity of bacteria from spring to midsummer, followed by adecline in late summer to early autumn. Cocci tended to dominatebacterial cell shapes from winter to midsummer, after whichrod-shaped cells became most abundant. Rod-shaped cells contributedthe most to bacterioplankton biomass at all depths and timesof year. The mean annual biovolume of all bacterioplankton was0.12 µ cell–1. The mean annual areal bacterioplanktonbiomass was 11–12 mmol C m–2. The percentage ofbacterial to phytoplankton biomass per volume in summertimewas 27% in the epilimnion and 11% in the hypolimnion. Averageannual and summertime bacterial production estimated using the[3H]thymidine method was similar to previous estimates of bacterialproduction measured in Mirror Lake using other methods. Theaverage ratio of bacterial to net phytoplankton production pervolume was 0.34 in the epilimnion, and between 0.65 and 1 1.depending on depth, in the hypolimnion during summer. Of severalvariables considered in regression analyses, only temperatureexplained >50% of the variance in bacterial production inboth the hypolimnion and epilimnion. Above 14°C, however,bacterial production and growth rate in the epilimnion werenot clearly related to temperature. During the period of midsummerhypolimnetic anoxia, despite colder temperatures in the hypolimnion,bacterial production was up to 10 times greater than in theepilimnion.  相似文献

以南京市花神湖和紫霞湖两个贫营养型湖泊为研究对象,通过构建花神湖和紫霞湖16S rRNA基因克隆文库探讨了浮游细菌群落结构组成的变化。结果表明,花神湖和紫霞湖两湖泊水体中浮游细菌群落结构相似,主要隶属于放线菌门(Actinobacteria)、蓝藻门(Cyanobacteria)、α-变形菌门(Alphaproteobacteria)、β-变形菌门(Betaproteobacteria)、杆菌门(Bacteroidetes)、浮霉菌门(Planctomycetes)、疣微菌门(Verrucomicrobia)和芽单胞菌门(Gemmatimonadetes),其中放线菌门(Actinobacteria)、蓝藻门(Cyanobacteria)、β-变形菌门(Betaproteobacteria)是优势细菌类群。两个湖泊水体中75%的细菌与GenBank中已有的未培养细菌同源性高于97%,同时在两个克隆文库中还发现了6个淡水细菌新类群。通过对低纬度区域贫营养型湖泊浮游细菌群落结构的分析,加深了我们对浮游细菌多样性的了解,表明湖泊浮游细菌多样性有待进一步认识。  相似文献

Bacterioplankton abundance and production, chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentrations and primary production (PP) were measured from the equatorial Indian Ocean (EIO) during northeast (NEM), southwest (SWM) and spring intermonsoon (SpIM) seasons from 1°N to 5°S along 83°E. The average bacterial abundance was 0.52 ± 0.29, 0.62 ± 0.33 and 0.46 ± 0.19 (× 108 cells l−1), respectively during NEM, SWM and SpIM in the top 100 m. In the deep waters (200 m and below), the bacterial counts averaged ∼0.35 ± 0.14 × 108 cells l−1 in SWM and 0.39 ± 0.16 × 108 cells l−1 in SpIM. The 0–120 m column integrated bacterial production (BP) ranged from 19 to 115 and from 10 to 51 mg C m−2 d−1 during NEM and SWM, respectively. Compared with many open ocean locations, bacterial abundance and production in this region are lower. The bacterial carbon production, however, is notably higher than that of phytoplankton PP (BP:PP ratio 102% in SWM and 188% in NEM). With perpetually low PP (NEM: 20, SWM: 18 and SpIM: 12 mg C m−2 d−1) and Chl a concentration (NEM: 16.5, SWM: 15.0 and SpIM: 20.9 mg m−2), the observed bacterial abundance and production are pivotal in the trophodynamics of the EIO. Efficient assimilation and mineralization of available organics by bacteria in the euphotic zone might serve a dual role in the ultra-oligotrophic regions including EIO. Thus, bacteria probably sustain microheterotrophs (micro- and meso-zooplankton) through microbial loop. Further, rapid mineralization by bacteria will make essential nutrients available to autotrophs.  相似文献

Laboratory feeding experiments and a serological examination of the gut contents of field-collected triclads indicated that Phagocata woodworthi Hyman feeds heavily on oligochaetes. Its realized food niche also includes Asellus , caddisflies, molluscs, chironomids, stoneflies and mayflies. It is concluded that Ph. woodworthi is a considerable threat to the British triclad fauna, because of the considerable overlap in diet with native species, its fast reaction time to damaged prey, and its polypharyngeal state.  相似文献

Structuring of bacterioplanktonic populations and factors that determine the structuring of specific niche partitions have been demonstrated only for a limited number of colder water environments. In order to better understand the physical chemical and biological parameters that may influence bacterioplankton diversity and abundance, we examined their productivity, abundance and diversity in the second largest Brazilian tropical bay (Guanabara Bay, GB), as well as seawater physical chemical and biological parameters of GB. The inner bay location with higher nutrient input favored higher microbial (including vibrio) growth. Metagenomic analysis revealed a predominance of Gammaproteobacteria in this location, while GB locations with lower nutrient concentration favored Alphaproteobacteria and Flavobacteria. According to the subsystems (SEED) functional analysis, GB has a distinctive metabolic signature, comprising a higher number of sequences in the metabolism of phosphorus and aromatic compounds and a lower number of sequences in the photosynthesis subsystem. The apparent phosphorus limitation appears to influence the GB metagenomic signature of the three locations. Phosphorus is also one of the main factors determining changes in the abundance of planktonic vibrios, suggesting that nutrient limitation can be observed at community (metagenomic) and population levels (total prokaryote and vibrio counts).  相似文献

Understanding the effects of trophic status and dissolved organic carbon concentration (DOC) on lake carbon cycling is essential for accurate ecosystem carbon models. Using isotopically labelled substrates we assessed spatial and temporal variability in bacterial respiration (BR) and algal primary production (PP) in two trophically, morphometrically and hydrologically different basins in Loch Lomond, a large temperate lake in Scotland. GIS modelling was used to construct a whole lake balance for bacterial production/respiration and PP, and from this the proportion of heterotrophy fuelled by allochthonous carbon was estimated. We tested the hypotheses that trophic status and DOC concentration affect the balance between PP and BR and examined which is the more significant driving factor. Additionally we estimated the percentage of BR that is fuelled by terrestrial carbon. PP varied seasonally and showed inter-basin homogeneity. BR was greatest in the mesotrophic south basin in autumn, which corresponded to measured peak DOC input, though over an annual cycle no relationship was observed between BR and DOC concentration. The PP:BR ratio was 0.37 ± 0.30 and 0.3 ± 0.45 in the north and south basins, respectively, assuming a bacterial growth efficiency of 0.1. We have found that allochthonous carbon potentially supports a substantial quantity of pelagic production, even during periods of high photosynthesis. Less productive systems are thought to be dominated by heterotrophic processes. However, we have found that the mesotrophic basin of a large lake to be as heterotrophic as its neighbouring oligotrophic basin, an observation that has implications for our understanding of modelling of the role of lakes in linking the terrestrial-atmospheric carbon cycle.  相似文献

The planktonic community of Crooked Lake, a large freshwaterlake in the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica was investigated duringthe austral summer in 1990. Very low levels of chlorophyll aranging between mean values of 0 29 and 1.8 µl1were recorded. The phytoplankton was largely made up of colouredflagellates, including single species of Chlamydomonas, Ochromonasand Pendimum, which occurred in low concentrations (23.8x 102–47.3x102 l1). Heterotrophic colourless flagellates, includingParaphysomonas vestita, were also relatively sparse (2.1x 102–21.3x102l1). Ciliated protozoans were particularly poorly represented.Only three species occurred reaching densities of 10011,and among them the mixotrophic species Strombidium vinde wasthe most common. A single species of heliozoan Actinosphaeriumand relatively large numbers of naked amoebae were the sarcodinerepresentatives The protistan community and the bacteria wereconcentrated into microbial consortia associated with floesof paniculate organic matter probably derived from the benthicalgal mat. Of the two microcrustacean zooplankters recordedfrom the lake only Daphniopsis studeri was found breeding inthe plankton in very low numbers. The behavioural and physiologicaladaptations of the organisms inhabiting this extremely oligotrophicenvironment are discussed.  相似文献

Estimations of bacterioplankton production and biomass werecarried out in enclosure experiments during two consecutiveyears (1989 and 1990) in oligotrophic clearwater Lake Njupfatet.The lake was limed in November 1989, and the experiments werecarried out both in 1989 (unlimed) and in 1990 (limed). Bags(3001) were manipulated with inorganic phosphorus and nitrogen,organic carbon, and metazoan zooplankton abundance. Both years,bacterial production was stimulated by inorganic nutrients aloneand in combination with organic carbon. However, the increasein bacterial production when inorganic nutrients were addedalone was much stronger in 1990 than in 1989. In 1989. bacterialproduction increased strongly only when inorganic nutrientsand organic carbon were added together. The phytoplankton communitywas dominated by the cyanobacterium Merismopedia tenuis-simaduring 1989, and the phytoplankton biomass increased only slightlywhen receiving inorganic nutrients. In 1990, when the lake hadbeen limed. M.tenuissima had completely disappeared and thephytoplankton community, dominated by Chrysophyceae and Chlorophyceae,responded strongly to additions of inorganic nutrients. Theincreased phytoplankton productivity in 1990 may have resultedin increased release of organic carbon, and this in turn thatthe carbon limitation of bacterioplankton production decreasedfrom 1989 to 1990. Zooplankton had a positive effect on bacterioplanktonproduction in 1989, but no effect in 1990. The loss of bacterialbiomass approximated 60% of the bacterial production in 1989,while in 1990 it almost equalled the bacterioplankton production.  相似文献

The abundance of both heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNAN) andbacterioplankton in a large (9km2) ultraoligotrophic Antarcticlake (Crooked Lake) were investigated from December 1992 untilNovember 1993. HNAN abundance peaked in spring, summer and autumn,falling to lowest numbers during the winter. Numbers rangedbetween 0 and 50.9x104 l–1. Bacterioplankton abundancewas highest during the late summer and then fell progressivelytowards winter and autumn (range 1.19–4.46x106 l–1)In contrast to numbers, mean cell volumes (MCV) of the bacteriareached their highest in spring, and consequently highest bacterialbiomass occurred at this time. MCV ranged between 0.052 and0.224µm3. Bacterial production measurements followingthe incorporation of [3H] thymidine into DNA and [14C] leucineinto protein using a doubling-labelling procedure were undertakenin January, June, August, October and November. Rates variedbetween 2.8 and 52 ng C l1 h1. On occasions, a significant differencein production rates based on the uptake of leucine and thymidinewas observed, suggesting unbalanced growth. Highest rates ofproduction coincided with times of high dissolved organic carbonlevels in the water column and lowest production with low levelsof DOC. HNAN grazing rates were measured by following the uptakeof fluorescently labelled bacteria and averaged 4.8 bacterialcells individual1 day1 at 2 and 4°C. Specific growth rates(h1) ranged around 0.00070–0.00077 in both the field andlaboratory, giving doubling times of 37.3 and 41.0 days, respectively.These low rates of grazing and growth indicate that there isno adaptation to low temperatures in these freshwater protists.Based on these data, the gross production efficiency is 24%.HNAN removed between 0.1 and 9.7% of bacterial production perday.  相似文献

A North American species of triclad, Phagocata woodworthi , has been recorded for the first time outside the American Continent from Loch Ness in Scotland; it is unusual in being polypharyngeal. A combination of PCR amplification and oligonucleotide probing was used to investigate the populations of ammonia-oxidisers of the -Proteobacteria in the eutrophic and oligotrophic basins of Lake Windermere, a large temperate lake in the English Lake District. Numbers of ammonia-oxidisers (MPN) in the Windermere lakewater were low (< 100 cells ml–1) throughout the year with the exception of peaks in August, which coincided with stratification, and November in the South Basin where overturn may have introduced ammonia-oxidising bacteria into the water column. Sediment samples contained larger populations of ammonia oxidisers, usually ca. 104 per g. dry weight, which remained relatively constant throughout the seasonal cycle in both Basins. DNA was recovered from lakewater and sediment samples and Nitrosospiraand N. europaea-eutrophalineage16S rRNA genes amplified in a nested PCR reaction, with confirmation of identity by oligonucleotide hybridisation. Nitrosospira 16S rDNA was readily detected in all samples and therefore found to be ubiquitous. In contrast, nitrosomonad DNA of the N. europaea-eutropha lineage could only be detected in the oligotrophic North Basin. Enrichment cultures of lakewater samples only exhibited nitrification at low (0.67 mM) and medium (5 mM) ammonium concentrations, whilst sediment enrichments nitrified at all concentrations tested including high (12.5 mM) ammonium medium. These data suggest that ammonia-oxidiser populations may be physiologically distinguished between lakewater and sediment, and that species distribution in a single lake is non-uniform.  相似文献

2001年9月至2004年12月对粤东大规模海水增养区柘林湾表、底层水体中浮游细菌的时空分布进行调查。结果表明,柘林湾浮游细菌总均值为59.4×10^4/dm^3,与国内外富营养化程度较高的内湾海域大致相当。在平面分布上,浮游细菌总体上表现出湾内高于湾外、养殖区高于非养殖区的分布格局,说明大规模增养殖业对浮游细菌的时空分布具有重要的影响,其中网箱养殖的影响尤其显著。湾顶黄冈河口浮游细菌呈现显著的逐年增加趋势,其原因一方面与调查期间降雨减少有关;另一方面可能是受周边陆源污染输入加剧的影响。在周年变化上,浮游细菌表现为典型的单峰型周年变化模式,主要是受水温的调控。年度峰值出现在夏季高温季节(6~8月),低谷出现在冬季低温季节(12~2月)。浮游细菌与溶氧呈现显著意义的负相关关系,但低溶氧可能是湾内养殖区初级生产力低下所致,而非浮游细菌耗氧所为。相反,溶氧降低可能会促进专性或兼性厌氧细菌的增加,使养殖环境进一步恶化。  相似文献

Within-lake horizontal heterogeneity of bacterioplankton community composition (BCC) was investigated in the large and shallow subtropical Taihu Lake (2338 km(2), maximum depth < 3 m). Samples were collected at 17 sites along a trophic gradient ranging from mesotrophic to hypertrophic areas in August and September 2004. These sites cover two alternative stable states of shallow lakes, which are basically characterized by the dominance or the lack of submerged macrophytes. In the case of Taihu Lake, the macrophyte-dominated state is characterized by clear water and immobilized sediment, and the state largely lacking macrophytes is characterized by the dominance of phytoplankton, frequent wind-driven re-suspension of sediments, and a high turbidity. Three different methods, i.e. denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), reverse line blot hybridization (RLB) with probes targeting 17 freshwater bacterial groups, and 16S rRNA gene cloning and sequencing, were used for analysis of BCC. The BCC varied strongly between the two alternative ecological states, but less pronounced between phytoplankton-dominated sites even spanning chlorophyll a gradients from 16.5 (mesotrophic) to 229.8 microg l(-1) (hypertrophic). The 16S rRNA gene library representing the turbid water state contained many sequences closely related to sequences previously obtained from soil or freshwater sediment samples. Furthermore, sequences representing two new lineages of freshwater Actinobacteria were obtained from the investigated samples. Comparative statistical analyses of BCC along the investigated ecological gradients revealed that the dominance of submersed macrophytes was the most influential factor on BCC, responsible for a major part of the observed within-habitat heterogeneity of BCC in Taihu Lake.  相似文献

A quantitative PCR assay for the SAR11 clade of marine Alphaproteobacteria was applied to nucleic acids extracted from monthly depth profiles sampled over a 3-year period (2004–2007) at the open-ocean Station ALOHA (A Long-term Oligotrophic Habitat Assessment; 22°45'N, 158°00'W) in the oligotrophic North Pacific Ocean. This analysis revealed a high contribution (averaging 36% of 16S rRNA gene copies) of SAR11 to the total detected 16S rRNA gene copies over depths ranging from the surface layer to 4000 m, and revealed consistent spatial and temporal variation in the relative abundance of SAR11 16S rRNA gene copies. On average, a higher proportion of SAR11 rRNA gene copies were detected in the photic zone (< 175 m depth; mean = 38%) compared with aphotic (> 175 m depth; mean = 30%), and in the winter months compared with the summer (mean =  44% versus 33%, integrated over 175 m depth). Partial least square to latent structure projections identified environmental variables that correlate with variation in the absolute abundance of SAR11, and provided tools for developing a predictive model to explain time and depth-dependent variations in SAR11. Moreover, this information was used to hindcast temporal dynamics of the SAR11 clade between 1997 and 2006 using the existing HOT data set, which suggested that interannual variations in upper ocean SAR11 abundances were related to ocean-climate variability such as the El Niño Southern Oscillation.  相似文献

Two sediment cores, ca. 6 m long, have been recovered from the north basin of Loch Ness, Scotland. Each consists of ca. 4.5 m of laminated gyttja, terminating in a basal grey, unlaminated clay. A suite of three 14C AMS dates have been obtained, and place the base of the gyttja at ca. 9500 yr B.P. Investigations into the structure, composition and formation of the laminae are in progress. Analysis by Backscatter Scanning Electron Microscopy (BSEM) has demonstrated that they consist of couplets comprising dark, clay-rich sediments thought to be deposited from spring to autumn, and pale, silt-rich layers believed to represent sedimentation through winter. The laminae are thus thought to record incidence and intensity of streamflow into the Loch over the past nine millennia, and thus illustrate environmental change over the region for most of the Holocene. X-ray densitometry has been utilised in order to count the laminations and test the hypothesis that they are varves. It has, however, proved difficult to obtain a continuous sequence of countable laminations, although it has been possible to construct a fragmented, floating chronology which indicates that the hypothesis may be correct. Examination of lamination thickness reveals that although the average rate of sedimentation throughout the time periods studied seems to have remained fairly constant, significant variations have occurred. As Loch Ness is located on the northwest oceanic fringe of Europe, any climatic signal which the laminations contain will be closely related to even larger scale events over and within the North Atlantic Ocean, which is a major controller of global climate. Preliminary statistical investigation of sequences of laminae is being carried out in order to search for periodicity of sedimentation which may then be related to appropriate climatic indices.  相似文献

Interactions of the main components of microbial planktonic food web (bacteria, heterotrophic nanoflagellates, and viruses) were studied in a protected overgrown littoral zone of the Rybinsk Reservoir (Upper Volga). The effect of colonial bird settlements (the Laridae family) on these processes was determined. The following systems exhibited significant negative correlations: “heterotrophic nanoflagellates–large rod-shaped bacteria” (“predator–prey”), “viruses-bacteriophages–bacterial products” (“parasite–host”) and “heterotrophic nanoflagellates–viruses-bacteriophages”. Relations between biotic factors controlling bacterial development were more pronounced outside the zone affected by colonial bird settlements. Near the bird colony the role of viruses in mortality of planktonic bacteria increased. Reproduction of bacterial cells accelerated in response to the increase in feeding activity of heterotrophic nanoflagellates. Virusesbacteriophages and heterotrophic nanoflagellates probably eliminate different targets until medium-sized cells become predominant in the bacterial community. Then heterotrophic nanoflagellates consume bacterial cells infected with viruses.  相似文献
