For economic and logistical reasons, an increased proportion of landings from trawl caught Nephrops norvegicus is being used in the live export trade. This paper reports a series of trials that investigate the impact of capture method and trawl duration on the levels of stress, damage and mortality of N. norvegicus. The stress of N. norvegicus captured during trials in spring and autumn by means of short trawl (1 h duration), long trawl (5 h duration) and creeling was assessed using a range of physiological measures (for haemolymph l-lactate, crustacean hyperglycaemic hormone (CHH) and abdominal muscle glycogen concentrations), the immunological status (total haemocyte counts (THC)) and physical assessments (mortality, damage indices). N. norvegicus caught by creeling were generally less stressed (i.e. significantly lower haemolymph l-lactate and CHH concentrations) than their trawled counterparts. Increased duration of trawl did not significantly alter physiological parameters, while time of landing did have a significant effect on l-lactate concentrations, as individuals landed in the morning exhibited higher concentrations. Irrespective of the season in which trawling occurred, individuals captured by short trawls in the morning suffered lowest mortalities. Damage assessment data revealed that a greater proportion of individuals was categorised as heavily damaged following longer trawls conducted in spring.  相似文献

The cabbage beetle, Colaphellus bowringi, is a short-day species undergoing an imaginal summer and winter diapause. Its photoperiodic response highly depends on temperature. All adults entered diapause at ≤ 20 °C regardless of photoperiods. High temperatures strongly weakened the diapause-inducing effects of long daylengths. The diapause-averting influence of short daylengths was expressed only at high temperatures (above 20 °C). This indicates that the beetle has a cryptic ability to reproduce in summer. In fact, summer and winter diapause were induced principally by relatively low temperatures in the field, whereas photoperiod had less influence on diapause induction. The critical daylength for the autumnal population was between 12 h and 13 h. By transferring from a long day to a short day or vice versa at different times after hatching, it was shown that the sensitive stage with regard to photoperiod was the larva, whereas a long day was photoperiodically more potent than a short day. The sensitive stage to temperature encompassed the larval, pupal and adult stages. This different response pattern serves to ensure that the beetle enters summer and winter diapause in time. The selections for non-diapause trait under laboratory (at 25 °C) and natural conditions (at >24 °C) showed that the beetle could lose its sensitivity to photoperiod very rapidly.  相似文献

The present study examined the influence of air exposure at different temperatures: a common perturbation associated with aquaculture handling practices, on immune responses in zhikong scallop Chlamys farreri. Scallops were exposed to air for 2 h, 6 h, 12 h and 24 h at 5 °C, 17 °C and 25 °C respectively. Thereafter, a recovery period of 24 h at 17 °C was applied. Haemocyte mortality, phagocytosis and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production of haemocytes, acid phosphatase (ACP) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in haemocyte lysates were chosen as immunomarkers of anoxic stress. The results showed that an increase of haemocyte mortality and a decrease of phagocytosis and ACP activity were observed after 2 h of air exposure for all temperatures tested. Moreover, a significant increase of ROS production occurred following 2 h of air exposure at 25 °C and 24 h of air exposure at 17 °C. Significant differences were also observed in haemocyte mortality, percentage of phagocytic cells and ACP and SOD activity depending on the temperature of air exposure. Finally, after 24 h of recovery at 17 °C, percentage of phagocytic haemocytes and ACP activity did not return to initial values. ROS production was significantly higher than before the recovery period and initial values for scallops subjected to air exposure at 5 °C. In our study, scallops showed a relative low anoxia tolerance under a high temperature. All the scallops air exposed to 25 °C died after the 6 h sampling. In conclusion, air exposure associated to aquaculture practices was demonstrated to strongly affect functional immune activities of scallop haemocytes, and high temperature air exposure caused reduced survival of scallops.  相似文献

The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate whether the season of ejaculate collection influences the freezability of porcine sperm. A total of 434 ejaculates were collected from boars of six different breeds over three years (2008–2011) and throughout the four seasons of the year identified in the northern hemisphere (winter, spring, summer and autumn). The ejaculates were cryopreserved using a standard 0.5 mL straw freezing protocol. Sperm quality was assessed before (fresh semen samples kept 24 h at 17 °C) and after freezing and thawing (at 30 and 150 min post-thawing in semen samples kept in a water bath at 37 °C), according to the percentages of total motility, as assessed by the CASA system, and viability, as assessed by flow cytometry after staining with SYBR-14, PI and PE-PNA. The data, in percentages, on sperm motility and viability after freezing and thawing were obtained at each evaluation time (recovered) and were normalized to the values before freezing (normalized). The season of ejaculate collection influenced (P < 0.01) sperm quality before freezing and after thawing (recovered and normalized), irrespective of the breed of boar. Sperm quality was lower in summer, both in terms of motility and viability, and in autumn, in terms of motility, than in winter and spring. Seasonality in the normalized data indicates that the season of ejaculate collection influences sperm freezability, regardless of the season’s influence on sperm quality before freezing. Consequently, the spermatozoa from ejaculates collected during summer and, to a lesser extent, also in autumn, are more sensitive to cryopreservation than those from ejaculates collected during winter and spring.  相似文献

The size of cheilostome bryozoan zooids has been widely discussed for its potential in inferring palaeotemperatures, based on correlations between zooid size and temperature. Studies in both the natural environment and under experimental laboratory conditions have shown that an increase in temperature significantly decreases zooid size in a range of bryozoan taxa. In order to test the effect of temperature on zooid size, the cheilostome bryozoan Cryptosula pallasiana was for the first time successfully cultured under laboratory conditions. C. pallasiana was grown at 14 °C and 18 °C using Rhodomonas sp. as a food organism. Zooid size, tentacle number and growth rate were measured over a period of 26 days. For comparison, zooids from colonies of C. pallasiana collected from the natural environment were measured in winter and summer months. Results showed that colonies grown in laboratory culture had significantly longer and wider zooids at 14 °C than at 18 °C. The specific growth rate of C. pallasiana doubled from 14 °C to 18 °C. Comparison of tentacle number in culture showed a significantly higher value at lower temperatures. This may be related to differing food availability, longer polypide life spans, or a shift of energy use at colder temperatures. In nature the zooids were significantly longer in colonies sampled in July than in January, a clear difference from laboratory results. The utility of cheilostome Bryozoa as indicators of environmental change and their potential for studies of paleotemperature are highlighted.  相似文献

Summary The weight-specific oxygen consumption ( ) of prairie voles caught in winter is 24% higher at 27.5° C and 29% higher at 7.5° C than that of summer animals, thus affording a higher weight-specific thermogenesis in winter than in summer which may allow tolerance to lower thermal exposures. Coincident with the increase in weight-specific rates of oxygen consumption is a decrease in body weight. When total energetic cost to maintain an animal per unit time is calculated, the cost at 27.5° C is the same for both summer and winter animals. Further, the cost to maintain an animal at 7.5° C is less in winter than in summer. Arguments are presented suggesting that prairie voles compensate for increased weight-specific thermogenesis in winter by lowering body weight. The responses to thermal acclimation are quite different in summer and winter animals, thus implying different sorts of metabolic organization. Acclimation to 5° C effects a 26% increase in at 27.5° C of winter voles, and acclimation to 30° C does not change . In contrast, at 27.5° C of summer animals is unaffected by 5° C acclimation, and depressed 20% by 30° C acclimation. Thus, the animals are capable of considerable physiological adjustment to varying thermal conditions in different seasons.  相似文献

The Norway Lobster Nephrops norvegicus (L.) was captured by trawling at depths of 120 to 150 m off the West Coast of Scotland using commercial fishing gears. Discarded animals (normally <25–35 mm carapace length) were sampled immediately after capture, and following emersion (exposure to air) on deck for 1 or 2 h. Their recovery from, and survival of, the stresses of being fished were examined in separate groups of animals transferred by SCUBA divers to underwater (u/w) cages on the seabed at a mean depth of 24 m. “Escaped” N. norvegicus were collected in a small-meshed (40 mm) “cover” around the cod-end and sampled without emersion. It was assumed that the physiological state of these animals would be similar to those passing through the cod-end meshes directly back into the surrounding sea during normal fishing operations. Groups of escaped animals were also transferred to u/w cages for recovery and survival studies. Control animals (creel-caught from the same fishing grounds) were sampled after recovery in u/w cages. Total body water content, haemolymph (blood) volume and composition were examined at various stages after capture and during recovery of control, discarded and escaped animals. Discarded animals showed significant reductions in total body water content compared to controls but recovered after 24 h. Controls that had been artificially damaged by puncturing also showed a reduction in water content. Escaped animals showed significantly higher mean water content compared to discards. Haemolymph volumes were also reduced in discarded animals suggesting that significant blood loss occurs during capture. There was also evidence of a shift of fluid from haemolymph to tissues in discarded animals. Pericardial (haemolymph) pressures were much reduced in discards compared to undisturbed control animals but showed significant recovery in surviving animals. Pressure reduction was less in escapes but was seen in control animals that had been exercised to exhaustion. Haemolymph osmotic concentrations, [Na+] and [K+] showed increases after discarding, notably after emersion, but haemocyanin [Hcy] and total haemolymph protein concentrations were less affected. The effect of these changes on longer term survival and recovery from the stress of capture are discussed.  相似文献

Summary I examined the relationship between temperature and agonistic behavior in the crayfish Cambarus latimanus LeConte a species which is reproductively active in winter. Crayfish were acclimated for 2 wks at 9.5, 14, 22 and 30°C in summer and at 9.5 and 22°C in winter. Agonistic behavior of pairs of the same sex was recorded for 1 h following acclimation. The entire acclimation, testing, and temperature-readjustment procedure was repeated until all crayfish pairs had been tested at each acclimation temperature.Published information on lobsters and catfish indicate that agonistic behavior is directly related to temperature. In contrast, for C. latimanus in the present study, duration of total agonistic behavior, maximum duration of a single agonistic interaction, and average length of a agonistic encounter were all inversely related to acclimation temperature. I hypothesized that for ectothermic species whose agonistic behavior is closely associated with reproductive processes (including competition for mates) the level of agonism will vary either directly or inversely depending upon whether the reproductive period is cued by increasing or decreasing seasonal temperatures, respectively.  相似文献

Plants of Gracilaria sp.(chorda type), which grow along the coast of Uranouchi Inlet in Tosa Bay, southern Japan, showed the highest biomass in the summer (26 °C to 31 °C) and spring season (15.1 °C to 24.9 °C). Maximum biomass was 6952 g m–2 in July, but gradually decreased in the autumn (30.5 °C in September to 20 °C in November) and winter (19.5 °C in December to 14.9 °C in February). Variation in yields and gel strength of the agars, were shown to depend on the time in the season. After alkali treatment (5% NaOH, 2 h) at three different temperatures (70, 80, and 90 °C), the agars showed gel strengths essentially that of commercial grade agars, with the best gel obtained at 80 °C. Maximum gel strength (1455 g cm–2 of 1.5% agar gel) occurred in winter when the biomass and agar yield were low. Minimum gel strength was in spring. Gel strength was inversely correlated with agar yield, but was positively correlated with apparent viscosity. Maximum viscosity was 40 cP. in December. Gelling temperatures, pH of 1.5% agar gel, and moisture content in agars showed little variation.  相似文献

The onset of and recovery from physiological stress in Liocarcinus depurator (Decapoda: Portunidae), that were trawled and subjected to emersion during fishing activities, was analysed in a field study in the Northern Adriatic Sea. Our working hypothesis intended to assess the development of physiological impairment due to air exposure during sorting operations, and the possible recovery trajectories after the return to sea of this by-caught species. The protocol we used included experimental trawling and quantification of physiological stress indicators (haemolymph concentrations of l-lactate, d-glucose, ammonia and pH) under different seasonal conditions. Immediately after being caught, when the fishing net was emptied on board, L. depurator showed higher physiological imbalance in the summer vs. winter experiments, highlighting the immediate effect of temperature shock due to the difference in temperature between the sea bottom and the deck (15–18 and 2°C in summer and winter, respectively). Experimental animals in the permanently emersed condition exhibited a progressive disruption of homeostasis in both seasons, as confirmed by a significant increase in lactate and a decrease in the pH of the haemolymph as a function of the emersion time. Ammonia levels were almost stable in the summer, when the physiological limits of this metabolite were reached immediately after animals were caught. In the winter, a significant increase in ammonia was observed over the time. This pattern can be attributed to the impairment of gill function, resulting in suffocation (manifested by marked haemolymph acidosis) and reduced ammonia excretion. Glucose concentration was revealed to be stable during air exposure in both seasons, though a higher concentration was recorded in the summer compared to the winter. The recovered individuals tended to return to pre-caught values for all of the haemolymph parameters we measured, though with different trajectories in the two seasons. From these results, we conclude that temperature shock, coupled with air exposure, influenced the ultimate stress level of this species to a greater extent than other effects of fishing.  相似文献

To investigate bleaching mechanisms in coral-zooxanthella symbiotic systems, it is important to study the cellular- or tissue-level responses of corals to stress. We established an experimental system to study the stress responses of coral cells using coral cell aggregates. Dissociated coral cells aggregate to form spherical bodies, which rotate by ciliary movement. These spherical bodies (tissue balls) stop rotating and disintegrate when exposed to a thermal stress. Tissue balls prepared from dissociated cells of Fungia sp. and Pavona divaricata were exposed to either elevated temperature (31 °C, with 25 °C as the control) or elevated temperature in the presence of exogenous antioxidants (ascorbic acid and catalase, or mannitol). The survival curves of tissue balls were markedly different between 31 and 25 °C. At 31 °C, most tissue balls disintegrated within 24 h, whereas at 25 °C, most tissue balls survived for more than 24 h. There was a negative correlation between survival time and the zooxanthella density of tissue balls at 31 °C, but no significant relationship was found at 25 °C. Antioxidants extended the survival time of tissue balls at high temperature, suggesting that zooxanthellae produce reactive oxygen species under stress. These results indicate that zooxanthellae produce harmful substances and damage coral cells under high-temperature stress. Tissue balls provide a good experimental system with which to study the effects of stress and various chemical reagents on corals cells.  相似文献

The microclimate in the habitat of the New Zealand alpine weta Hemideina maori is very variable with winter temperatures down to −6 °C under the rocks where the insects are found. Subfreezing temperatures may in winter prevail for up to 17 days but diurnal cycles of freezing and thawing are common, as is also the case in summer. Rates of temperature change can be very high and up to −7.20 °C/h. During winter, humidity was high for extended periods ranging from 70% to 100% relative humidity (RH). In the summer, humidity ranged from 30% RH during the day to 100% RH at night. The supercooling point of the haemolymph was approximately −8 °C year round, caused by a heat labile substance. The supercooling point of the haemolymph of an insect of the same genus, Hemideina femorata not regularly exposed to subfreezing temperatures, was ca. −16.5 °C. Thermal hysteresis was not detected in the haemolymph of H. maori. Haemolymph osmolality varied from 380 mOsm (summer) to 700 mOsm (winter). Body water content was ca. 75% all year round. Total concentrations of sodium, potassium and chloride in haemolymph varied from 170 mM (winter) to 250 mM (summer). The total concentration of free amino acids varied from 58 mM (summer) to 263 mM (winter). This variation was mostly due to proline which varied from ca. 15 mM (summer) to ca. 100 mM (winter). The freeze-tolerant weta H. maori is exposed to a highly variable and cold environment all year round and several properties of its haemolymph composition can be attributed to these climatic conditions, e.g. the presence of ice-nucleating agents and an increase in the concentration of proline during cold hardening in the autumn. The annual course of frost resistance (LT50) and the pH of the cell effusate in needles of two-year-old Scots pine seedlings were monitored in a field experiment in Oulu, Northern Finland (65° N, 25° E) during 1995. The aim of the work was to to develop model to predict the annual variation in frost resistance by pH of the cell effusate and meteorological data. The seedlings were covered with a fibre cloth shelter which transmitted sufficient light for them to experience the photoperiod, but prevented the accumulation of snow over them. The shelter above the seedlings was removed at the beginning of May and erected again at the end of September. The seedlings were watered only for the time when the shelter was removed, and received fertilizer only during the previous summer (1994).Frost resistance was only -5° C during the growing season but more than -100° C during the winter rest period. It was about -10° C at the end of August, increased to -55° C in the next three weeks, and reached -100° C at the beginning of October. The pH of the cell effusate was lowest during the growing season and highest in winter, the difference being about one and half pH unit. Needles exposed to -196° C showed pH from 4.0 in summer to 5.5 in winter, while pH of the non-frozen needles varied from 5.0 to 6.5, respectively. Seasonal variation in frost resistance was explained by a regression model well (R2 = 0.9) when day length, minimum air temperature and pH were entered as variables.  相似文献

The dusky cotton bug (Oxycarenus laetus, KIRBY) a pest of several crops. The effects of winter and summer on the biology and morphology was investigated. The sampled eggs of dusky cotton bug (DCB) were kept under controlled environment for biological and morphological investigations. In winter, the mating duration of DCB was observed longer significantly (74.2 days), egg development period (3.93 days), an egg laying period (3.6 days) and hatching period (6.66 days) noted longer in winter season. Interestingly, average number of hatched egg (16.8 days) observed significantly higher in summer and the percentage of the hatching of eggs (81.95%) were also observed higher in summer as compare to winter. Whereas, the longevity of all nymph stages in winter longer days as compare to summer nymph stages. Moreover, differences were also observed between male and female development days between winter and summer. In the winter, female DCB development was suggestively higher as compare to summer (24 days). Whereas, the developmental days were noted considerably more in winter for males as compare to summer (14.93 days). On other hand, for morphological parameters, no differences were observed between winter and summer population of DCB.  相似文献

Sweating rate, rectal and skin temperatures and respiration rate were measured at weekly intervals from 7 days of age (for 4 weeks in Experiment 1; 6 weeks in Experiment 2) in winter- and summer-born Friesian calves exposed to a temperature of 39°C dry bulb and 32°C wet bulb in a climate chamber. Four calves were studied in each season in both experiments. In Experiment 1, ambient temperatures were from 3° to 9°C higher in early summer than in late winter. During each 39°C exposure, sweating rate increased from basal levels of 40–90 to plateau levels of 120–300 g/m2 per h after 90–120 min. The increase in sweating rate with age was most pronounced in winter-born calves, but summer-born calves had higher values at 1 week of age (167±52.4 vs 94.4±30.1 g/m2 per h). Seasonal differences in ambient temperature were greater in Experiment 2 (11° to 17°C). In this case summer-born calves had higher sweating rates at each age (plateau values of 220–320 g/m2 per h), and showed a more rapid increase in sweating rate during each 39°C exposure than winter-born calves (plateau values of 100–250 g/m2 per h). The results demonstrate major changes in sweating competence during the first 4–6 weeks of life in Friesian calves, a quite pronounced effect of season (ambient temperature) on the levels of sweating achieved, and indicate that low sweating rates in newborn calves are a contributing factor in deaths due to hyperthermia in semi-arid grazing areas.  相似文献

Nychthemeral and annual rhythms of the rectal temperature were determined for Corriedale sheep in a tropical climate. The minimum rectal temperature averaged 39.55° C at 0500 hours in summer, and 38.87° C at 0600 hours in winter. The maximum was 40.03° C in summer (1700 hours) and 39.33° C in winter (1830 hours). Annual cycle of the rectal temperature showed a minimum in July and maximum in December.  相似文献

Thermoregulatory responses are known to differ seasonally in endotherms and this is often dependent on the environment and region they are resident. Holarctic animals are exposed to severe winters and substantial seasonal variation in ambient temperature. In contrast, those in the Afrotropics have less severe winters, but greater variation in temperature, rainfall and net primary production. These environmental factors place different selection pressures on physiological responses in endotherms. In this study, metabolic rate (VO2) and body temperature (Tb) were measured in captive bred Rock Kestrels (Falco rupicolus) from the Afrotropics after a period of summer and winter acclimatisation. Resting metabolic rate was significantly lower after the winter acclimatisation period than after the summer acclimatisation period, and there was a shift in the thermoneutral zone from 20–33 °C in summer to 15–30 °C in winter. However, no significant difference in basal metabolic rate between summer and winter was found. The results show that Rock Kestrels reduce energy expenditure at low ambient temperatures in winter as expected in an Afrotropical species.  相似文献

Habitat edges frequently possess distinct ecological conditions that affect interactions such as competition and predation. Within a species' preferred habitat, the structural complexity and resource availability of adjacent habitats may influence the effect of edges on ecological processes. In nearshore waters of New England, American lobsters (Homarus americanus) inhabit fragmented cobble reefs that often are bordered by unvegetated sediment and occasionally by seagrass. We determined whether proximity to cobble patch edges, microhabitat characteristics within cobble habitat, and the type of habitat adjacent to cobble patches (seagrass or unvegetated sediment) influence the density and survival of juvenile and adult American lobsters in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, USA. We surveyed naturally occurring cobble patches and artificial cobble reefs to determine how the odds of finding lobsters varied with distance from the edge and habitat type. Additionally, we tethered lobsters at different distances from the edge inside and outside of cobble patches to determine how lobster relative survival varied with edge proximity and habitat type. In cobble habitat, the odds of finding large lobsters (adolescents and adults > 40 mm carapace length (CL)) were highest near patch edges regardless of adjacent habitat type, whereas smaller lobsters (e.g. emergent juveniles 15-25 mm CL) were more abundant in patch interiors when seagrass bordered cobble patches. The odds of finding lobsters also increased with the relative amount of cobble cover within patches. In predation experiments, lobster relative survival after 6 h was lowest outside of cobble and increased toward cobble patch interiors, but after 24 h this trend disappeared or reversed. Seagrass appeared to offer greater refuge for lobsters than did unvegetated sediment. Our results suggest that proximity to patch edges influences lobster distribution and survival, and that edge effects on lobsters vary with life history phase and with the type of habitat adjacent to cobble patches.  相似文献

The mountain hare (Lepus timidus) is a year-round active herbivore adapted to survive the boreal winter. Captive mountain hares (N = 4) were implanted with intraabdominal thermosensitive loggers to record their core body temperature (Tb) for a year and during food deprivation (8–48 h) in summer and winter. The average Tb was 38.7 ± 0.01 °C in summer and 38.3 ± 0.01 °C in winter. The yearly Tb correlated positively with the ambient temperature. The 24-h Tb was the highest from late scotophase to early photophase in summer and winter and the lowest during middle-late photophase in summer or during early-middle scotophase in winter. The range of the 24-h oscillations in Tb increased in three animals in winter. Food deprivation did not induce hypothermia in summer or winter. These preliminary data suggest that the mountain hare can spare a modest amount of energy with the wintertime reduction in Tb.  相似文献

Live holding of lobsters is a major part of the post-harvest process in lobster fisheries. Following capture, animals are placed in factory tanks and held for varying lengths of time for recovery from stress due to handling, air exposure, disturbance and environmental variations. The aim of the present study was to determine the pattern of response of a range of immune and physiological parameters over varying holding periods and assess their possible application as a measure of recovery from stress of post-harvest procedures and in the determination of an appropriate duration of acclimation prior to live transport. The effect of holding duration on the following immune parameters: total haemocyte counts (THC), haemolymph clotting times, haemolymph pH, haemolymph protein concentration and the differential proportion of haemocytes, was assessed. Lobsters brought to the factory were placed in holding tanks and sampled over a period of up to 10 days. Two studies were conducted, the first on lobsters from different catch groups and the second on lobsters from the same day's catch from the same area. Experiments were conducted on adult animals (10-12 animals/treatment group) with a different group of lobsters being sampled at each time point. Various immune parameters showed alterations with time during holding. A consistent observation was significantly prolonged clotting times following four days of holding. The haemolymph pH showed a strong positive correlation to clotting time and the hyaline cell proportion showed a strong negative correlation with semi-granular cells. Although the levels of THC, clotting time and differential cell counts after one day of holding were similar to those observed in other studies on rested post-harvest lobsters, suggesting that the lobsters had recovered from the acute stress of capture and transport, subsequent alterations in pH, clotting time and differential cell counts indicated other physiological adjustments were still occurring for up to 4 days post capture. Overall the results suggest that though the effects of post-harvest procedures on the immune parameters appear to be resolved after a short duration of holding at low temperatures, no single immune parameter can provide predictable indication of the acclimation process.  相似文献
