Long-term data on the occurrence of “teasing” in young chimpanzees living in the Arnhem Zoo chimpanzee colony are presented. They strengthen the hypotheses—presented in earlier papers—concerning the existence of two functional forms of this so-called quasi-aggressive behaviour and provide insight into the way in which they develop. Developmental changes are visible both in the performance of quasi-aggressive behaviour and in the effects evoked by the behaviour. The purpose of the reducing uncertainty type of quasi-aggressive behaviour, performed by male and female youngsters towards adult females, is to obtain more predictable responses. As youngsters grow older, they engage in this behaviour also to gain control over the responses of the target animals. Eventually, the quasi-aggressive behaviour of male youngsters develops into adult-like bluff and attack behaviour the purpose of which is to establish dominance relationships. The investigating authority type of quasi-aggressive behaviour, directed towards adult males, is associated increasingly with the exercise of power by the target males. The youngsters increasingly behave submissively towards the males and direct quasi-aggressive behaviour especially towards the alpha-male at moments when he is bluffing or involved in other conspicuous social interactions. These and other changes in the relationship between adult males and male youngsters are already visible well before the onset of puberty in the youngsters. It is discussed in how far the development of these exploratory aggression types involves social learning processes and how this fits in with current concepts concerning the development of aggressive behaviour. 相似文献

Witnessing of conspecifics in pain has been shown to elicit socially triggered freezing in rodents. It is unknown how robust this response is to repeated exposure to a cage-mate experiencing painful stimulation. To address this question, shock-experienced Observer rats repeatedly witnessed familiar Demonstrators receive painful footshocks (six sessions). Results confirm that Observers freeze during the first testing session. The occurrence of this behaviour however gradually diminished as the experimental sessions progressed, reaching minimal freezing levels by the end of the experiments. In contrast, the appearance and continuous increase in the frequency of yawning, a behavior that was inhibited by metyrapone (i.e,. a glucocorticoid synthesis blocker), might represent an alternative coping strategy, suggesting that the observer’s reduced freezing does not necessarily indicate a disappearance in the affective response to the Demonstrator’s distress. 相似文献

Among cultural behaviors of chimpanzees, the developmental processes of complex skills involved in tool use are relatively well known. However, few studies have examined the ontogeny of social customs that do not require complex skills. Thus, in this study, we describe the developmental process of the grooming hand‐clasp (GHC), one of the well‐known social customs of chimpanzees at Mahale. We have collected 383 cases of GHC where at least one of the participants was 15 years old or younger during 1994–2007. First performances of GHC with the mother were observed at around 4–6 years old; the earliest observed age was 4 years and 4 months old. The first performances of GHC with nonrelated females were at around age 9 years, and those with adult males at around 11 years. However, some orphans engaged in GHC earlier than nonorphans. By gradually expanding GHC partners from the mother to other females and then to males, chimpanzees increased the number of GHC partners with age. Young males were observed to perform GHC with larger numbers of partners than were young females. GHC by young chimpanzees was shorter in duration than that among adults. Overall, the ontogeny of GHC showed several dissimilarities with that of tool use and was more an extension of the development of typical grooming behavior. For example, infants did not try to perform GHC initially; instead, mothers were more active in the earliest stages. These results suggest that not all socially learned cultural behaviors are acquired in the way of learning tool use. There may be various ways of learning behavioral patterns that are performed continuously in a group and that consequently comprise culture in chimpanzees. Am. J. When physiological adaptation is insufficient, hosts have developed behavioral responses to avoid or limit contact with parasites. One such behavior, leaf-swallowing, occurs widely among the African great apes. This behavior involves the slow and deliberate swallowing without chewing of whole bristly leaves. Folded one at a time between tongue and palate, the leaves pass through the gastro-intestinal (GI) tract visibly unchanged. Independent studies in two populations of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) showed significant correlations between the swallowing of whole leaves and the expulsion of the nodule worm Oesophagostomum stephanostomum and a species of tapeworm (Bertiella studeri). We integrate behavioral, parasitological and physiological observations pertaining to leaf-swallowing to elucidate the behavioral mechanism responsible for the expulsion and control of nodule worm infections by the ape host. Physical irritation produced by bristly leaves swallowed on an empty stomach, increases motility and secretion resulting in diarrhea which rapidly moves leaves through the GI tract. In the proximal hindgut, the site of third-stage larvae (L3) cyst formation and adult worm attachment, motility, secretion and the scouring effect of rough leaves is enhanced by haustral contractions and peristalsis-antiperistalsis. Frequently, at the peak of reinfection, a proportion of nonencysted L3 is also predictably vulnerable. These factors should result in the disruption of the life cycle of Oesophagostomum spp. Repeated flushing during peak periods of reinfection is probably responsible for long-run reduction of worm burdens at certain times of the year. Accordingly, leaf-swallowing can be viewed as a deliberate adaptive behavioral strategy with physiological consequences for the host. The expulsion of worms based on the activation of basic physiological responses in the host is a novel hitherto undescribed form of parasitic control. 相似文献

Effect of Cold Treatments on the Binding Stability of Photosystem II Extrinsic Proteins and an Associated Increase in Susceptibility to Photoinhibition 下载免费PDF全文
When pea plants (Pisum sativum L. cv Feltham First) are subjected to freezing conditions (−18°C) followed by a thaw to 18°C, there is a significant inhibition of water-splitting capacity judged by the rate of light-induced reduction of 2,6-dichlorophenol indophenol using isolated thylakoid membrane fragments enriched in photosystem II (PSII). The freeze-thaw-induced inhibition of water-splitting activity has been correlated with the loss of the 17- and 23-kilodalton extrinsic protein of PSII and with a weakening of the binding of the 33-kilodalton protein. There was no apparent loss of bound manganese. Addition of 10 millimolar CaCl2, however, allowed a full recovery of the water-splitting activity of these modified PSII-enriched particles. The freeze-thaw-induced changes in the organization and functional capacity of PSII was found to increase its susceptibility to photoinhibition in agreement with the concepts presented in the accompanying paper, that oxidative damage can occur within the PSII reaction center as a consequence of extending the lifetime of P680+. 相似文献

Stress-induced mutagenesis was investigated in the absence of selection for growth fitness by using synthetic biology to control perceived environmental stress in Escherichia coli. We find that controlled intracellular RpoS dosage is central to a sigmoidal, saturable three- to fourfold increase in mutation rates and associated changes in DNA repair proteins. 相似文献

The soil-borne fungus, Fusarium solani f. sp. phaseoli, attacks roots and hypocotyls of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) plants causing a devastating disease called root and foot rot. In a study of the host-pathogen relationship it was found that young bean roots, with the radicle just emerging, were highly tolerant to the pathogen, whereas older bean seedlings, with a fully developed root system, were completely susceptible. Investigations by low-temperature scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that significantly fewer spores and hyphae were present on the root surface of young bean seedlings as compared to older ones. A similar pattern of attachment was found when bean roots were inoculated with spores of F. solani f. sp. pisi, a related pathogen causing disease on peas but not on beans. Light microscopic studies showed that F. solani f. sp. pisi did not penetrate the root but rapidly formed thick-walled resting spores on the root surface. F. solani f. sp. phaseoli on the other hand quickly penetrated the root and formed an extensive network of fungal hyphae. These results demonstrate that the ability of fungal propagules to adhere to and to penetrate host tissues are two distinct processes. Furthermore, the data indicate that young bean roots lack a surface component necessary for attachment of fungal spores which may help explain their tolerance to Fusarium root rot. 相似文献

Developmental Studies on Microbodies in Wheat Leaves : II. Ontogeny of Particulate Enzyme Associations 总被引:2,自引:10,他引:2 下载免费PDF全文
Crude particulate fractions from wheat leaves (Triticum vulgare L.) were separated on continuous sucrose density gradients, resulting in: broken chloroplasts, a mitochondrial fraction (indicated by cytochrome c oxidase), and microbodies. The visible band of the microbody fraction from adult leaves appears at a buoyant density of 1.25 grams per cm3 and contains most of the activities of catalase, glycolate oxidase, and hydroxypyruvate reductase on the gradient. In the shoots of freshly soaked seeds, catalase is already highly particulate. During further development in light or in darkness, 40 to 60% of the total activities of catalase and glycolate oxidase and 25 to 40% of the total activity of hydroxypyruvate reductase are always found in the particulate fractions of the leaves. In young developmental stages, the peaks of the activity profiles of the microbody enzymes appear on sucrose gradients at relatively low densities, first between 1.17 to 1.20 grams per cm3. During development in light, the buoyant density of the microbody fraction shifts to the final value of 1.25 grams per cm3. However, even after 1 week of growth in the dark, the microbody fraction from etiolated leaves was observed at buoyant densitites 1.17 to 1.24 grams per cm3 and did not appear as a defined visible band. A characteristic visible microbody band at a buoyant density 1.24 grams per cm3 was found when the dark-grown seedlings received only three separate 5-minute exposures to white light. A similar peak was also obtained from light-grown leaves in which chloroplast development had been blocked by 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole. 相似文献

We re-examined a modified emotional Stroop task that included an additional colour-word alongside the emotional word, providing the response conflict of the traditional Stroop task. Negative emotionally salient (i.e. unpleasant’) words are claimed to capture attention, producing a smaller Stroop effect for negative words compared to neutral words; this phenomenon is called the emotional dilution of the Stroop effect. To address previous limitations, this study compared negative words with lexically matched neutral words in a powered sample of 45 participants. Results demonstrated an emotional Stroop effect (slower colour-naming responses for negative words) and a traditional Stroop effect but not an emotional dilution of the Stroop effect. This finding is at odds with claims that other processing resources are diminished through the failure to disengage attention from emotional information. No matter how attention towards emotional information builds up over time, our findings indicate that attentional resources are not fully captured by negative words. 相似文献

Effect of Plate Size and Location of Disc on Zone Diameter in the Disc Antimicrobial Susceptibility Test 下载免费PDF全文
An established standard antimicrobial disc susceptibility test recommends the use of a 150-mm petri dish. Many workers substitute 100-mm plates and use various types of mechanical dispensers. A comparison of zone diameters was made by testing Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli against penicillin and chloramphenicol with the use of these different sized plates and dispensers. Zone diameters were consistently smaller at the edges of plates than in the center (0.4 to 1.2 mm). Significant small differences of up to 1.2 mm or no differences were observed when the mean diameters from these various plates were compared. All of the zone diameter measurements fell within accepted values for analytical variability in this procedure. There is no evidence that any individual combination of plates, dispensers, or disc locations provides greater precision in zone diameter measurement. More difficulty was encountered in measuring zones at the periphery of small plates. This suggests that busy clinical laboratory workers might not produce work of comparable quality with the smaller plates. 相似文献

A comparison of the results of the antimicrobial susceptibility tests by the agar-dilution method, the agar-diffusion method, the Autobac-1 system and the MS2 system has been made in a number of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus strains. With the agar-dilution method as a reference the agar-diffusion method and the MS2 system showed mostly satisfactory scores. With the Autobac-1 system, Esch. coli strains gave several insufficient scores with some antibiotics. A study of the distribution of minimal inhibitory concentrations against the strains has enabled the explanation of some of the discrepancies that were observed. Furthermore, the influence of two different sets of interpretive criteria on the outcome of the results has been studied. 相似文献

Tryptophan (TRY) is the precursor for serotonin (5-HT) synthesis. Common maize has low protein content with low concentration
of TRY and lysine. A diet based on two strains of corn differing in their TRY content were given to adult female rats, prior
mating, during pregnancy and lactation. Same diets were offered to their male offspring after weaning until reaching 60-days
old. The pattern and severity of the convulsive phenomenon induced by monosodium glutamate (MSG) in a well established model
of Status epilepticus were evaluated in comparison with data from animals of two control groups: (a) rats fed a hypoproteic (8% protein) diet,
and (b) rats fed a normal Purina chow diet (23% protein). Significant increased susceptibility to convulsions was observed
in both groups of rats fed the corn-based diets. However, the animals fed the common corn-based diet (8–9% protein; 0.058%
TRY) showed a higher susceptibility to convulsions than what was registered in animals fed a Quality Protein Maize (QPM)-based
diet (8–9% protein; 0.1% TRY). It is concluded that low TRY concentration in the diet during development, produces lower rate
of brain 5-HT synthesis, affecting development and maturation of GABAergic inhibitory cortical interneurons, with alteration
of cortical excitability, contributing in part, to the increased susceptibility to convulsions, as shown in the experiments
here reported.

Plant Ontogeny as a Conditionality Factor in the Protective Effect of Ants on a Neotropical Tree 下载免费PDF全文
The outcome of any interspecific interaction is often determined by the ecological context in which the interacting species are embedded. Plant ontogeny may represent an important source of variation in the outcome of ant–plant mutualisms, as the level of investment in ant rewards, in alternative (non‐biotic) defenses, or both, may be modulated by the plant's developmental stage. In addition, the abundance and identities of the ants involved in the interaction may change during ontogeny of the host‐plant. Here, we evaluated if plant ontogeny affects the interaction between ants and a savanna tree species (Caryocar brasiliense) that produces extrafloral nectar. We found fewer ants per branch and fewer species of ants per tree in juvenile than in reproductive trees of medium and large size. In addition, large‐sized reproductive trees were more likely to host more aggressive ants than were medium‐sized reproductive or juvenile trees. Such differences strongly affected the outcome of the interaction between ants and their host‐plants, as the magnitude of the effect of ants on herbivory was much stronger for large trees than for juvenile ones. The fact that we did not find significant ontogenetic variation in the concentration of leaf tannins suggests that the observed differences in herbivory did not result from a differential investment in chemical defenses among different‐sized plants. Overall, the results of our study indicate that the developmental stage of the host plant is an important factor of conditionality in the interaction between C. brasiliense and arboreal foraging ants. 相似文献

We examined the influence of aging upon the uptake of glutamate by synaptosomes, and the oxidation of Synaptosomal vitamin E. Synaptosomes isolated from the cerebral hemispheres of Fischer 344 rats, 4 and 24 months old, were suspended at 37°C in buffer (pH 7.4) simulating extracellular fluid containing 10 mM glucose. The Km for the high affinity uptake of tritium labeled glutamate was 10 M. The uptake of glutamate was lower in synaptosomes from older animals than those from younger animals for periods of up to 20 minutes. Upon incubation with a mixture of ferrous iron and ascorbate, more of the alpha tocopherol in synaptosomes derived from older rats was oxidized than in those derived from younger ones. Older animals may be more susceptible to excitotoxicity because: a) Synaptosomal reuptake of glutamate is less efficient and b) oxidative stress induced by various agents including glutamate may be higher in synaptosomes from the older animal. 相似文献

Animals coping with operant conditioning tasks often show behaviors that are not recorded by keys, levers and similar response transducers. Nevertheless, these adjunctive behaviors should not be disposed of by classifying them as incidental. Often they are found to be at least partially influenced by the experimentally programmed contingencies, and under certain conditions they can in turn influence conditioned behaviors. Here we describe the occurrence and characteristics of two such behaviors, stimulus grasping in operantly key-pecking pigeons and intra-delay stereotypies in a delayed matching-to-sample task with budgerigars. It is argued that for a proper account of these behaviors it is necessary to refer to a behavioral systems approach that appeals to longer ranging ontogenetic and phylogenetic histories than is usually considered in the psychological literature. The gaping towards on-key stimuli by pigeons is attributed to the hypothesis that operantly conditioned key-pecks probably relate to a grasp-pecking response that is normally executed towards non-edible items covering food. The intra-delay behaviors shown by the budgerigars are assumed to have originated from stress-induced displacement responses that adventitiously came under the influence of differential reinforcement contingencies. Finally, we discuss what kinds of evidence are needed to put these hypothetical explanations on a more certain footing. 相似文献

Which factors select for long juvenile periods in some species is not well understood. One potential reason to delay the onset of reproduction is slow food acquisition rates, either due to competition (part of the ecological risk avoidance hypothesis), or due to a decreased foraging efficiency (a version of the needing to learn hypothesis). Capuchins provide a useful genus to test the needing to learn hypothesis because they are known for having long juvenile periods and a difficult-to-acquire diet. Generalized, linear, mixed models with data from 609 fruit forage focal follows on 49, habituated, wild Cebus capucinus were used to test two predictions from the needing-to-learn hypothesis as it applies to fruit foraging skills: 1) capuchin monkeys do not achieve adult foraging return rates for difficult-to-acquire fruits before late in the juvenile period; and 2) variance in return rates for these fruits is at least partially associated with differences in foraging skill. In support of the first prediction, adults, compared with all younger age classes, had significantly higher foraging return rates when foraging for fruits that were ranked as difficult-to-acquire (return rates relative to adults: 0.30–0.41, p-value range 0.008–0.016), indicating that the individuals in the group who have the most foraging experience also achieve the highest return rates. In contrast, and in support of the second prediction, there were no significant differences between age classes for fruits that were ranked as easy to acquire (return rates relative to adults: 0.97–1.42, p-value range 0.086–0.896), indicating that strength and/or skill are likely to affect return rates. In addition, fruits that were difficult to acquire were foraged at nearly identical rates by adult males and significantly smaller (and presumably weaker) adult females (males relative to females: 1.01, p = 0.978), while subadult females had much lower foraging efficiency than the similarly-sized but more experienced adult females (subadults relative to adults: 0.34, p = 0.052), indicating that skill, specifically, is likely to have an effect on return rates. These results are consistent with the needing to learn hypothesis and indicate that long juvenile periods in capuchins may be the result of selection for more time to learn foraging skills for difficult-to-acquire fruits. 相似文献
