1. Novel hosts present phytophagous insects with nutritional challenges which can cause host‐associated divergence. 2. The performance of the Bog gum‐Victorian metapopulation of Ctenarytaina bipartita Burckhardt et al. (Psylloidea:Aphalaridae), a psyllid whose range is being expanded by tree planting, on five species and genotypes of Eucalyptus endemic to south‐eastern Australia was quantified. Settling of females on two non‐hosts was also tested. 3. Female C. bipartita exhibited significant host‐associated plasticity in proctiger length (the body part used for oviposition into apical buds). Psyllids with longer wings and proctigers arose from a primary host. Fecundity varied significantly among hosts and was highest on a novel host. Hosts did not differ significantly in free amino acids (FAAs) but did differ in concentrations of essential amino acids (EAAs). However, nymphs did not differ significantly in EAAs. Surprisingly, fecundity was not related to total FAAs, availability of EAAs or concentrations of EAAs but was related to concentrations of four non‐EAAs. Mean fecundity per host was also positively related to the relative abundance of galloyl groups (associated with hydrolysable tannins). 4. Leaf age was more important to settling than eucalypt species; females settled on young leaves but this response was not related to leaf water content. 5. Planting the rare Eucalyptus kitsoniana in new habitats will expand the range of Bog gum‐Victorian C. bipartita and provide a bridge for the colonisation of novel eucalypts with buds suitable for oviposition. Host expansion by this metapopulation is not constrained by nutritional quality and may result in morphological divergence.  相似文献

Female herbivorous insects often dictate the distributions of offspring through oviposition site selection. The optimal oviposition hypothesis proposes that sites selected should benefit offspring because they provide the best diets, but distributions can reflect adult responses to non‐dietary factors. On its dioecious host [Allocasuarina verticillata (Lam.) L. Johnson (Casuarinaceae)], the largely sessile nymphs of Aacanthocnema dobsoni (Froggatt) (Hemiptera: Triozidae) are most abundant at the bases of the equisetoid, photosynthetic branchlets and can also be associated with chlorosis. We asked whether the distribution of nymphs could be explained by the nutritional quality of hosts (at tree and branchlet levels) and investigated the nutritional implications of chlorosis. Binary choice oviposition bioassays revealed that female psyllids exhibited a weak preference for the apical (younger) halves of branchlets of male and female trees over basal (older) halves. In the absence of nymphs, basal and apical halves of branchlets of both sexes had comparable concentrations of amino N. The severity of chlorosis of individual female branchlets was positively related to the density of nymphs. Along entire female branchlets, chlorosis was associated with significant reductions in the concentrations of certain amino acids (including glutamic acid). For basal halves of female branchlets, chlorosis was associated with increased concentrations of a different suite of amino acids, i.e., evidence of nutritional enhancement. Fifth instars from female branchlets were slightly larger than those from male branchlets but nymphal morphology is constrained by branchlet diameter. The conformation of the host (especially the spaces between the scale‐like leaves) appears to dictate oviposition site selection more than nutritional quality. Nutritional enhancement is suggested to explain the absence of a strong linkage between preference and performance. Aggregation of adults (and eggs) at the base of branchlets could arise from heightened risk of dislodgement by wind at the ends of branchlets and enhanced mate finding in less exposed locations.  相似文献

Some herbivores can modify the physiology of plant modules to meet their nutritional requirements. Induction of premature leaf senescence could benefit herbivores since it is associated with the mobilisation of nutrients. We compared the effects of nymphal feeding by Cardiaspina near densitexta on Eucalyptus moluccana with endogenous processes associated with senescence to assess the relative merits of an insect manipulation or plant defence interpretation of responses. Evidence supporting insect manipulation included increased size of fourth and fifth instar nymphs (in the latter the effect was restricted to forewing pad length of females) on leaves supporting high numbers of conspecifics and feeding preventing leaf necrosis. Intra-specific competition negated greater performance at very high densities. High and very high abundances of nymphs were associated with increased concentrations of amino acid N but only very high abundances of nymphs tended to be associated with increased concentrations of six essential amino acids. Contrary to the insect manipulation interpretation, feeding by very high abundances of nymphs was associated with significant reductions in chlorophyll, carotenoids and anthocyanins. Evidence supporting plant defence included the severity of chlorosis increasing with the abundance of nymphs. Leaf reddening did not develop because ambient conditions associated with photoinhibition (high irradiance and low temperature) were not experienced by leaves with chlorotic lesions. Leaf reddening (from anthocyanins) alone is not expected to adversely affect nymphal survival; only leaf necrosis would kill nymphs. For senescence-inducing psyllids, nutritional enhancement does not fit neatly into either an insect manipulation or plant defence interpretation.  相似文献

1. Female eugenia psyllids Trioza eugeniae oviposit on the margins of expanding young Syzygium paniculatum leaves. The developing nymphs, feeding within pit‐shaped galls on the leaves, cause the leaves to become curled and deformed. The degree of leaf curling was correlated positively with densities of T. eugeniae nymphs. 2. High relative humidity increased persistence of nymphs on leaves at low insect densities, but persistence did not differ between high or low relative humidity conditions when nymphal densities were high and leaves were greatly curled. 3. Direct insolation increased nymphal mortality. Nymphs on the abaxial leaf surface in the direct sun had lower mortality than similarly exposed nymphs on the adaxial leaf surface. 4. Field populations showed high preference for abaxial leaf surfaces and a stronger preference for shaded adaxial surfaces than for exposed adaxial surfaces. 5. Adverse environmental conditions of direct insolation and low relative humidity may be mitigated by leaf curl associated with moderate populations, however competition at high nymphal density supersedes any potential benefit arising from leaf curling and has a negative effect on nymphal survival.  相似文献

The plant stress hypothesis suggests that some herbivores favour stressed plants, whereas the plant vigour hypothesis proposes that other herbivores prefer vigorous plants. The effects of a prior stress, that of frost damage, were examined on the subsequent growth of Eucalyptus globulus globulus and on the response of insect herbivores. Frost damage affected tree growth by reducing new leaf area and increasing specific leaf area (SLA). However, herbivore abundance was not affected by prior frost damage. Two feeding trials using Anoplognathus chloropyrus and Hyalarcta huebneri and a morphometric study of Ctenarytaina eucalypti were conducted to assess the performance of herbivores on trees that had suffered more or less frost damage. Consumption by A. chloropyrus and H. huebneri was unaffected by foliage origin (damaged versus healthy). Hyalarcta huebneri grew faster when fed leaves from previously damaged trees, and C. eucalypti from previously damaged trees were larger than those from healthy trees. Enhanced insect performance on frost damaged plants may have resulted from the high specific leaf area (most likely thinner) leaves. The herbivore abundance data did not support the hypothesis that previously frost damaged plants are preferred by insects. However, increased growth of H. huebneri and larger body size of C. eucalypti on damaged trees indicates that previously stressed trees may produce leaves of higher nutritional value.  相似文献

The current study investigated the seasonal phenology, spatial distribution, feeding damage and economic impact of two plant bugs, Lygocoris inconspicuous Knight and Taedia scrupeus Say, in commercial vineyards. For both plant bugs, densities of nymphs were higher on vines located near the edge of woodlots rather than in the interior of vineyards, which may be attributed to the presence of wild vines and other alternate host-plants in wooded areas. Nymphs of both species fed on apical leaves and developing fruit clusters of vine shoots, initiating development after swelling of buds in the spring and reaching the adult stage when vines were in bloom. Confining high densities of L. inconspicuous (10 nymphs) on individual shoots early in the season resulted in significant reduction of the number of fruit clusters per shoot, even when feeding was restricted to short (7 d) duration; the average weight of fruit clusters, in contrast, was not affected to a large extent by feeding activity of nymphs. An experiment evaluating the impact of low density of L. inconspicuous (0-0.3 nymphs per shoot) indicated a marginally significant negative relationship between density of nymphs and average weight of fruit clusters. Control measures may be economically justified when population density exceeds a combined threshold of one nymph of either L. inconspicuous or T. scrupeus per 10 shoots of vines.  相似文献

Predatory insects that depend upon particular prey animals are commonly regulated by the prey animal’s abundance. Nymphs of the giant water bug Kirkaldyia (=Lethocerus) deyrolli (Heteroptera: Belostomatidae) are predators regarded as specialists in feeding on tadpoles. We studied the ontogenetic diet shift of aquatic nymphs by quantifying instar abundance and by analyzing captured prey and prey relative abundance during the period of rice irrigation in three localities. We also evaluated the contribution of major prey items (tadpoles, frogs, and Odonata nymphs) on specific growth rates of each nymphal stage in a rearing experiment. First to third-instar nymphs of K. deyrolli fed mainly on tadpoles, regardless of differences in prey availability. Nymphs of subsequent fourth and fifth instar stages shifted from tadpoles to other prey animals within each rice field. A rearing experiment demonstrated that giant water bug nymphs provided with tadpoles had greater specific growth rates at all nymphal stages, except for the final stage, than nymphs fed other prey (frogs and Odonata nymphs). The emergence of young K. deyrolli nymphs seemed to coincide with the period during which tadpoles became abundant in the rice fields. Consumption of tadpoles seems important to allow the nymph to complete its larval development in an unstable temporary habitat. An erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献

The presence of glaucous juvenile leaves and glossy adult leaves in the canopy of the heteroblastic plant Eucalyptus globulus Labill., is a source of within-tree variation that affects herbivory by three psyllid species (Ctenarytaina eucalypti Maskell, C. spatulata Taylor and Glycaspis brimblecombei Moore) (Homoptera, Psyllidae). In no-choice field experiments with adult female psyllids in clip-on cages, we compared (1) leaf-settling, honeydew production, and survival of the Ctenarytaina species on juvenile and adult leaves of E. globulus, (2) leaf-settling and survival of G. brimblecombei on juvenile and adult leaves, (3) leaf-settling and survival of the three species on waxy (untreated) juvenile leaves and de-waxed (rubbed) juvenile leaves, and (4) leaf-settling and survival of C. spatulata on juvenile leaves from which wax was repeatedly removed. Leaf-settling by C. eucalypti was significantly greater on juvenile than adult leaves, however, honeydew production and survival were equal on both leaf types. In contrast, leaf-settling, honeydew production, and survival by C. spatulata were significantly greater on adult than juvenile leaves. Similarly, leaf-settling and survival by G. brimblecombei were significantly greater on adult than juvenile leaves. Wax removal from juvenile leaves significantly increased leaf-settling and survival of C. spatulata and G. brimblecombei. Although wax removal decreased leaf-settling by C. eucalypti, it did not affect survival. Repeated removal of regenerating wax from juvenile leaves did not affect leaf-settling or survival of C. spatulata. These results suggest that the epicuticular wax of juvenile leaves plays a role in resistance to C. spatulata and G. brimblecombei, however other unknown factors are probably also involved.  相似文献

The phenology and damage patterns of Lygocoris spinolae (Meyer-Dür) on ‘Campbell Early’ grape were examined in different grape development stage of inflorescence formation, blooming, and berry set. Nymphs fed on newly unfolding leaves of shoot tip before inflorescence formation. As the inflorescences were clearly visible, nymphs on leaves moved to flower clusters. Sting spots with brown color occurred at sucking sites of leaves, then expanded to hole as the leaves developed, and resulted in leaf malformation. The nymphs on flower clusters sucked developing florets, which induced the drying of florets followed by defoliation. After flower caps had fallen, L. spinolae fed on young berries causing blackening of berry skin around the sting. The blackening of berry skin changed to corky-scarred tissue as the berry developed. L. spinolae feeding significantly reduced the number of berries per cluster in all grape stages. A few berries became corky-scarred or shot berries when fed at inflorescence formation period. Feeding at blooming caused shot berries with low rate of corky-scarred berry. Most of the berries were corky-scarred or became shot berries when fed at berry set. Feeding by adults caused the same damage patterns as nymphs. Heavy damages were observed where L. spinolae were introduced after inflorescence formation: reduced number of berries per cluster by 35.0 to 99.1% at blooming and by 80.0% at berry setting depending on L. spinolae densities.  相似文献

The stylet probing behavior and survival of Ctenarytaina eucalypti Maskell, C. spatulata Taylor and Glycaspis brimblecombei Moore (Homoptera, Psyllidae) on adult leaves and `waxy' (untreated) and `de-waxed' (rubbed) juvenile leaves of the heteroblastic plant Eucalyptus globulus Labillardiere were compared. Psyllids were confined within clip-on cages and after 15 days the leaf tissue under each cage was sectioned and stained to characterize and quantify stylet tracks. Across all leaf treatments and psyllid species 1438 stylet tracks were observed in 7239 leaf sections and 571 of these stylet tracks reached the vascular tissue. Survival and the number of stylet tracks of C. eucalypti on the different leaf types did not differ. In contrast, C. spatulata survived significantly longer and produced significantly more stylet tracks on adult leaves and `de-waxed' juvenile leaves than on `waxy' juvenile leaves. Although G. brimblecombei survived equally on all treatments, it produced more stylet tracks on adult leaves and `de-waxed' juvenile leaves than on `waxy' juvenile leaves. For all three psyllid species, there was a positive correlation between survival and number of stylet tracks reaching the vascular tissue. Stylet tracks of all species were generally intercellular from the leaf epidermis to the vascular tissue. Oil glands were avoided by all species, as indicated by the repeated branching and formation of stylet tracks at the periphery of the glands. In `de-waxed' juvenile leaves, C. spatulata and G. brimblecombei produced stylet tracks that entered the leaf at the adaxial surface and exited at the abaxial surface. This pattern was rarely observed on adult leaves, and never occurred with C. eucalypti in any leaf type. We conclude that (1) the epicuticular wax on juvenile leaves reduced stylet probing by C. spatulata and G. brimblecombei, (2) there were apparently no internal physical barriers in either juvenile or adult leaves to prevent the stylets of any of the psyllid species from reaching the vascular tissue, (3) the psyllids avoided oil glands in both leaf types, and (4) C. spatulata and G. brimblecombei may lack cues to orient their stylets towards the vascular tissue in the juvenile leaves.  相似文献

Herbivores have developed diverse strategies to manipulate host plants for their own benefits. The gall induction by the maize orange leafhopper Cicadulina bipunctata is different from that by other gall-inducing insects in that the galls are induced not on feeding sites but appear on distant, newly developing leaves. In addition, adult C. bipunctata are highly mobile and seldom feed on gall tissue that they have induced. These mean that the gall induction by C. bipunctata is unlikely to contribute to the fitness of the inducer itself. The objective of this study was to determine whether manipulation of the host plant by this leafhopper has a subsequent benefit to offspring. Adults feeding on maize seedlings caused a partial change in the glucose content and a remarkable change in the accumulation of free amino acids in the gall tissue. Increases in emergence and developmental rates were observed in nymphs feeding on gall tissue induced by prior adult feeding. Such improvements were not evident in nymphs feeding on a C. bipunctata-resistant variety, which rarely displays galls after C. bipunctata feeding, nor on maize seedlings previously foraged by another leafhopper, Psammotettix striatus. The results indicate that gall tissue induced by adult C. bipunctata contribute to better performance of its offspring through improvement of the nutritional components of host plants.  相似文献

The biology and host specificity of the aquatic grasshopper,Paulinia acuminata (De Geer) were studied in quarantine in Australia. Adults and nymphs fed on the leaves of salvinia (Salvinia molesta), water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) and azolla (Azolla pinnata). Fifty-three plant species representing 38 families were exposed to adults and nymphs ofP. acuminata. Adult feeding occurred on 17 plants but nymphs failed to feed on 9 of these species in the presence ofS. molesta. In starvation trials, 14 plants (excludingS. molesta, P. stratiotes andA. pinnata) were attacked by adults, of which only 5 were attacked by nymphs. Heavy feeding occurred on strawberry (Fragaria xananassa) but no oviposition occurred even when the leaves were held in contact with the water surface. The life cycle ofP. acuminata was completed only onS. molesta, P. stratiotes andA. pinnata. Eggs deposited on water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) failed to hatch. Laboratory evaluation was supplemented with observations on the distribution and abundance ofP. acuminata on the Zambezi River system, Zimbabwe, during October 1984.  相似文献

Few spittlebug species are gall formers, but the Homoptera as a whole contain many gall‐forming species in many families. Nymphs of a spittlebug, Aphelaenus nigripectus (Aphrophoridae, Auchenorrhyncha, Homoptera), were observed to induce leaf‐roll galls on cherry trees (Prunus speciosa, P. × yedoensis and P. pendula cv. pendula (Rosaceae)) in late April in Kyoto, Japan. Aphelaenus nigripectus nymphs aggregated on the ventral surface of the young leaves, fed on the ventral (abaxial) midvein, and excreted masses of froth in the rolled leaves. In a field experiment, it was discovered that feeding of A. nigripectus nymphs can induce rolling of the cherry leaves, and that the rolled leaves may provide protection from desiccation to A. nigripectus nymphs. This is the first record of gall‐forming habits in Japanese spittlebugs.  相似文献

1. The nymphs of the aphid Monaphis antennata occupy an unusual feeding niche, being restricted to the upper surfaces of leaves and petioles. The possibility that this is a predator-avoidance strategy was investigated.
2. Nymphs could be induced to feed on the under surfaces of petioles and the mortality of these nymphs was then compared with the mortality of nymphs feeding from the upper surfaces when exposed to coccinellid predators.
3. Coccinellid larvae spent less time foraging on the upper surfaces of leaves and petioles than on the under surfaces of leaves and petioles.
4. The nymphs occupying the upper surfaces of petioles, the normal feeding position, were encountered by the coccinellids later and less often, and fewer were attacked compared with those occupying the under surfaces.
5. It is concluded that the feeding niche of the nymphs of this aphid is adaptive in that it reduces exposure to foraging predators and is the result of selection to occupy enemy-free space.  相似文献

Early instar nymphs of the mayfly, Cloeon sp. were kept on an algal or a detrital diet at 20 ± 1 °C in the laboratory. A control group was not given any food. Nymphs kept on algae showed significantly (P = 0.001) higher growth both in terms of length and biomass than for those kept on detritus. None of the nymphs given algae or detritus died during the experiment, and 40 per cent of those fed algae and 20 per cent fed detritus reached maturity by the termination of the experiment. Food retention time as well as gill ventilation rate of nymphs feeding on algae were significantly (P = 0.001) higher than those feeding on detritus. It is probable that these two factors largely enabled the nymphs to survive as well as to grow and reach maturity, though relatively slowly, solely on a detrital diet. However, algae was clearly shown to be a superior food resource for Cloeon sp. nymphs.  相似文献

Abstract

This study compared the nutritional indices in third instar female nymphs of the tropical grasshopper, Poecilocerus bmtonius, after feeding on Calotropis procera or wheat seedling. Analysis of the main and interactive effects of feeding on C. procera indicates that nymph performance was not affected by the cardenolides present in C. procera. The rate of consumption and assimilation on C. procerawas higher when compared with that of wheat seedlings and weight gain of the nymphs on C. procera was correlated to higher assimilation. The relative consumption rate (RCR) and relative growth rate (RGR) were significantly higher in nymphs fed on C. procera than in those fed on wheat seedlings. Feeding on wheat seedlings significantly reduced the approximate digestibility (AD), efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI), and efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD). Feeding on wheat seedlings resulted in 60% mortality of nymphs before moulting to the fourth instar stage. The nutritional indices were also estimated after feeding on C. procera only by fourth instar nymphs.  相似文献

We investigated how chemical cues derived from female Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae) and their host plants affect host acceptance choices by conspecifics. In four-choice cage and two-choice olfactometer assays, female psyllids avoided conspecific female cues in a density-dependent manner. However, odors from citrus plants actively damaged by psyllid feeding were attractive to conspecific females. When odors from feeding-damaged plants were presented simultaneously with odors from female D. citri, attraction of female conspecifics was no longer observed as compared with a clean air control in olfactometer assays. In subsequent experiments, D. citri females were released within arenas that contained actively feeding-damaged or non-damaged (control) citrus plants, each with previously psyllid-infested and uninfested young leaves. D. citri development is linked to the presence of these newly emerging leaves which is the only site of nymphal development. Female D. citri were initially attracted by the actively damaged plants as compared with non-damaged controls. After acceptance of plants that were actively damaged by feeding, D. citri females preferentially chose and settled on uninfested young leaves as compared with previously infested young leaves. A herbivore-induced plant volatile attractant and a female-specific odor repellent appear to be complementary foraging cues providing psyllids with information at two spatial scales: (1) the whole plant level for choosing a plant potentially harboring male conspecifics for mating, and (2) the within plant level to reduce intra-conspecific competition by identifying previously exploited resources.  相似文献

Ladybird beetles have successfully been used to control different pests. Cheilomenes sexmaculata (Fabricius) and Oenopia conglobata contaminata)Menetries((Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) are two dominant and efficient predators of the common pistachio psylla, Agonoscena pistaciae (Hem.: Psyllidae) in Iran. In the current study, the impact of two diets, i.e., nymphs of A. pistaciae and eggs of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lep.: Pyralidae), were investigated on the cold hardiness, supercooling point (SCP), and lethal temperature of different life stages of the coccinellids. The results suggested that the eggs of E. kuehniella are a suitable diet for both predators. In general, beetles of O. conglobata contaminata were more cold tolerant than those of C. sexmaculata. The SCP of the adults of C. sexmaculata, feeding on psyllid was about −15 °C, whereas the SCP of the beetles, feeding on the eggs of flour moth, was about −19 °C. However, the diets had no significant effects on the SCP of O. conglobata contaminata. For both ladybird beetles, eggs were the most sensitive stage, and adulthood was the most tolerant developmental stage. No eggs survived at zero and subzero temperatures. The survival of C. sexmaculata increased from 6.25% for adults fed on psyllids to 13.75% for those fed on flour moth eggs after 24 h exposure to cold at −4 °C. The survival of O. conglobata contaminata adults after exposure to cold at −4 °C for 24 h raised from 28.75% for adults fed on psyllids to 42.50% for those fed on flour moth eggs. Regardless of the diet, both beetles were considered to be chill-intolerant insects as the most mortality occurred above the SCP.  相似文献

Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) is the primary vector of Candidatus Liberibacter spp. bacteria that cause citrus greening, a disease of worldwide importance. Olfactometry was employed to test responses of D. citri to odours from intact citrus plants (Mexican lime, Citrus aurantifolia, sour orange, Citrus aurantium, Marsh grapefruit, Citrus paradisi and Valencia orange, Citrus sinensis), citrus plants previously infested with D. citri, and odours of conspecifics including nymphs, adult insects of same and opposite sex, and their products (honeydew), both alone and in combination. In contrast to other studies, psyllids of both sexes were attracted to volatiles of undamaged Mexican lime leaves, whereas undamaged grapefruit attracted only females, and leaves of Valencia and sour orange did not attract either sex. All four plant species attracted female psyllids when previously infested, but only Mexican lime and sour orange‐attracted males. Thus, Citrus species appear to vary in the production of both constituitive and induced volatiles that attract adult psyllids. Volatiles emitted by nymphs did not attract either sex, but psyllid honeydew was attractive to males, likely due to female pheromone residues. Males oriented to the odour of females, whereas the reverse was not true, and neither males nor females oriented to same‐sex volatiles. The addition of conspecific cues (adults, nymphs or honeydew) did not increase female attraction to previously infested leaves, but male response was increased by the presence of adults and honeydew, regardless of plant species. Thus, female psyllids appear to orient more strongly to volatiles of plant origin, whereas males respond more strongly to cues emanating from females and conspecific excretions. These results suggest that female psyllids drive the initial colonization of host plants, whereas males orient to females and infested plants. Identification of the specific volatiles involved may permit their use in monitoring and management of this pest.  相似文献
