Strawberry plants (Fragaria ananassaDuchesne var. Elsanta) weregrown in pots at two concentrations of carbon dioxide (partialpressures of 39 and 56 Pa) and with three rates of nitrogensupply (0.04, 0.4 and 4 mMas nutrient solution) to study theirindividual and interactive effects on plant growth and fruityield. Nitrogen deficiency reduced total dry biomass and relativegrowth rate (RGR), mainly through reductions in leaf area ratio(LAR) and plant N concentration (PNC), although both the netassimilation rate (NAR) and root weight ratio (RWR) increased.Elevated CO2increased the N productivity (NP) but reduced theLAR. High CO2increased the fruit yield by 42% at high N supplyand by 17% at low N supply. The CO2yield enhancement occurredthrough an increase in the flower and fruit number of individualplants. This resulted in an increase in the fruit weight ratio(FWR) of plants at high CO2. Nitrogen deficiency reduced thefruit yield by about 50% through decreases in fruit size, fruitset and the number of fruits. However, N deficiency increasedthe proportion of total plant dry biomass allocated to fruits. There were no significant interactions between CO2and N supplyon yield.Copyright 1998 Annals of Botany Company Nitrogen; carbon dioxide; strawberry (Fragaria ananassaDuchesne); fruit yield.  相似文献

In a field experiment to investigate the physiological causesof variation in yield between autumn- and spring-sown wheatand between old and new varieties, the grain yields of the winterwheats were 3-15 per cent, greater than of the spring ones andthe new varieties Cappelle-Desprez and Jufy I yielded 40-70per cent, more than Squarehead's Master and Atle. Nitrogen fertilizerincreased the yields of Cappelle-Desprez and Jufy I more thanof Atle, and decreased the yield of Squarehead's Master by makingit lodge. Until ear emergence the winter varieties had greater leaf-areaindices (L) and dry weights, but smaller net assimilation rates(E), than the spring varieties. Square-head's Master had greaterL but smaller E, and similar dry weight to Cappelle-Desprez.Jufy I had similar E to Atlc, but greater L and dry weight.Nitrogen increased L and dry weight, but decreased E. All thedifferences in E between varieties and nitrogen treatments couldbe explained by the opposite effects on L, that is to say, thedifferences in E were caused by variation in mutual shadingarising from the differences in L and not by changes in leafphysiology. L of winter wheat reached its maximum at the end of May, butL of spring wheat continued to increase until ear emergence.Afterwards Ldecreased more rapidly for winter than for springwheat, so that eventually spring wheat had the greater L. Thesedifferences in the time changes of L partially compensated forthe shorter growth period of spring wheat, and tended to equalizethe grain yield from winter and spring sowings. After ear emergence total dry weight of winter varieties continuedto be greater than of spring ones, but the difference in dryweight of ears was much smaller because ear: shoot dry-weightratio was greater for the spring varieties. Total dry weight, ear dry weight and ear: shoot ratio were all greater in thenew than in the old varieties. Leaf area duration (D) afterear emergence was slightly greater for the winter than for thespring varieties and similar for old and new. The apparent efficiencyof this leaf area in grain production, measured by the grainleaf ratio (ratio of grain dry weight to D), was similar forwinter and spring varieties but greater for new than for old. This suggests that Cappelle-Desprez and Jufy I have higher grainyields because their ears photosynthesize more than do the earsof Squarehead's Master and Atle. Before ear emergence winter varieties had more shoots than springones, and old varieties more than new. After ear emergence therewere only small differences in numbers of ears; percentage survivalwas greater for spring than for winter and for new than forold varieties. Differences in dry weight between varieties were not causedby differences in nitrogen uptake.  相似文献

Groundsel (Senecio vulgaris L.), healthy or infected with therust fungus Puccinia lagenophorae Cooke, was grown at a rangeof nutrient concentrations in sand culture. There were statisticallysignificant interactions between the effects of infection andnutrient supply upon the dry weights of stems, leaves, rootsand reproductive tissues, leaf area and cumulative capitulumproduction. This interaction occurred since infection causedsignificant inhibitions of growth only at moderate or high nutrientconcentrations. At low concentrations rusted plants were similarto or slightly larger than controls. Both in controls and rustedplants root: shoot ratios increased as nutrient supply declined. The ratio of root: shoot dry weight was consistently reducedby infection whilst root length: leaf area ratio was relativelyunchanged. More detailed investigations confirmed that infection had littleeffect on plant growth under nutrient deficient conditions despitesuppression of the host's ability to increase root: shoot ratiosin response to nutrient stress. This reflected the inhibitionof relative growth rates in rusted plants at high but not lownutrient concentrations, which in turn reflected reduced netassimilation rates (NAR). Increases in leaf-area ratio (LAR)often ameliorated the decline in NAR in rusted plants. Senecio vulgaris L., Puccinia lagenophorae Cooke, nutrient deficiency, growth, root: shoot ratio  相似文献

Using growth-analysis techniques, the variation in relativegrowth-rate (RGR) and its components, net assimilation rate(NAR), and leaf-area ratio (LAR), was examined in 18 populationsof L. perenne, six of L. multiflorum, and two hybrid cultivarsfrom contrasting climatic and agronomic origins, grown at lowand high light intensities in the glasshouse. Significant differences between populations were found for RGR,NAR, and LAR at both light intensities. At both intensitiesthe annual or biennial multiflorum group had a greater LAR anda lower specific leaf weight and chlorophyll content than theperennial perenne group. At the low intensity this was compensatedby a greater NAR in the perenne group, with no resultant differencein RGR. At the high intensity there was no difference betweenthe groups in NAR, and hence a greater RGR in the multiflorumgroup. Within the perenne and multiflorum groups, at both light intensities, the variation between populations in RGR was based on differencesin NAR rather than in LAR. There was no regular correlationof NAR with either specific leaf weight, or chlorophyll contentat either light intensity, though at low light intensity itwas significantly correlated with shoot-root ratio.  相似文献

Seasonal rates of growth and dry-matter production were examinedin second-year seedlings of Larix leptolepis, Pinus contorta, and Pinus radiata grown in an unheated glasshouse. The deciduousLarix had a higher rate of production of dry matter than eitherof the two species of Pinus until the time of leaf fall, andthis was accompanied by a greater height and diameter increment. However, between the time of leaf fall in Larix and the endof the growing season, the species of Pinus increased in dryweight by more than 25 per cent, and in consequence Larix, becauseof its deciduous habit, lost much of the advantage of its fastgrowth-rate. Comparison of the two pine species showed thatP. radiata, while making nearly 3.5 times as much height incrementas P. contorta, had only a 45 per cent higher dry weight thanthat species at the end of the experiment. The dry-weight differenceswere due to differences in relative growth-rate (RGR). The RGR differences between the two pine species resulted fromdifferences in net assimilation rate (NAR) rather than differencesin the ratio of photosynthetic to non-photosynthetic tissue, and P. radiata gained most of its dry-weight advantage duringthe two months of October and November. It seems possible thatthe higher NAR of P. radiata at this time was a reflection ofthe difference in growth habit between the two pine species, and possible mechanisms by which growth may have affected NARin this experiment are briefly considered.  相似文献

Dry weight and nitrogen (N) partitioning of sand-cultured youngjack pine (Pinus banksianaLamb.) seedlings under controlledenvironments were studied 3, 6, 9, 12 and/or 15 weeks afterthe initiation of six dynamic N supply treatments. The supplyof other nutrients was maintained at optimal levels. Total dryweight varied widely among treatments and whole plant totalN concentration ranged from 10 to 32 mg g-1d. wt at most samplingintervals. Whole plant N concentration changed, with time, accordingto three distinct patterns: (1) stable; (2) rapidly increasing;or (3) gradually declining. Regardless of N treatment and samplinginterval, whole plant N concentration was linearly and positivelycorrelated with root, needle and stem N concentration. Dry weightand N weight ratios of needles declined, whereas those of rootsincreased linearly with decreasing whole plant N concentration(r2=0.43 to 0.76) regardless of N regime. Dry matter partitioningto stems, however, was better explained by developmental stagethan by whole plant N concentration. With the decline in internalN status, N was increasingly concentrated in roots at the expenseof needles and stems. These results suggest: (1) dry weightand N partioning may be largely a function of the internal Nstatus of plant rather than root and shoot activities; (2) bothshoot and root specific activities may have a close, positiveassociation with whole plant N concentration; (3) N-partitioningmay be an active process itself and may warrant separate considerationfrom dry weight; and (4) developmental stage may be a significantdeterminant of partitioning, particularly to stems.Copyright1998 Annals of Botany Company Developmental stage; dry weight; internal N status; jack pine; modelling; nitrogen; partitioning;Pinus banksiana; substrate N supply.  相似文献

Two natural populations of Dactylis glomerata, one from Norwayand the other from Portugal, were grown at four temperaturesin a 16-h photoperiod. Seedlings were harvested at six equalintervals of 7 days at 5 and 10 °C, and 3.5 days at 20 and30 °C. Time curves of net assimilation rate (NAR), leaf-arearatio (LAR) and other growth attributes were derived from curvesfitted to loge leaf area and loge plant weight as functionsof time. Three types of curves were found for both NAR and LARand these conformed to theoretical expectations. There was ageneral decline in NAR and LAR with time, but in certain treatmentsNAR increased during the later harvests, and the possible reasonsfor this are discussed. A similar rise in NAR was also obtainedin an experiment with 12 harvest times.  相似文献

NEW ARGININE-CONTAINING PEPTIDES ISOLATED FROM CHLORELLA CELLS   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Seven kinds of arginine-containing peptides were isolated fromthe cells of Chlorella ellipsoidea, and their structures wereinvestigated. Their amino acid make-ups and quantities presentin randomly grown algal cells were found to be as follows (indecreasing order of contentin moles per dry weight of cells): Arg-Arg, Arg-Arg-Glu, Arg-Arg-Arg, Arg-Glu> Arg-(Arg2, Glu)-Glu>Arg-(Arg3,Glu), Arg-(Glu, Asp) Using synchronously mass-cultured algal cells, the quantitiesof these peptides as they changed during the algal life cyclewere followed. It was found that, except in the case of Arg-Arg-Arg,the contents (in moles per dry weight of cells) of the peptides(i) markedly increased during the stages from Dn to L1, (ii)remained almost constant or more or less appreciably increasedduring the stages from L1 to L3, and (iii) decreased sharplyduring the transformation of L3-cells (via L4) into Dn-cellsin the dark. The content of Arg-Arg-Arg remained almost constantduring the period from Dn to L3, and on transference of L3-cellsin the dark it increased temporarily and then decreased duringthe transformation of L4-cells into Dn-cells. Significance andpossible roles of these peculiar peptides in the life cycleof Chlorella were discussed. (Received May 10, 1965; )  相似文献

The tomato fruit was compared to a sphere with a radius R. Radialgrowth rates in the fruit (FIW and FID) due to water importor to dry matter import, respectively, which are also the waterimport rate or dry matter import rate per unit surface areaof fruit, were calculated from two sets of published results. This data referred to fruits which swelled in such a way thatthe availability of assimilates had little effect on growth. Two varieties differentiated the two series of results and inone series, three trials were differentiated by the salinityof the nutrient solution. In all trials, it was found that FIW and FID decreased whenR increased. Two phases were observed for FIW: after a firstphase, FIW decreased more quickly and almost linearly when Rincreased. FID was constant or decreased with respect to R.Except at the beginning of growth at the greatest salinity, there were clearly linear regressions between FIW and FID suchas FID = aFIW-b; where b was lower with higher salinity. Thechanges of the concentration of imported dry matter (FID/FIWwere examined in terms of R and FIW/R. The mechanisms controllingthe changes in FIW and FID were discussed. The results suggestedfruit radius was an important parameter of these mechanisms. Thus, water import rate and dry matter import rate could eachbe considered to be the product of two factors: fruit surfacearea, which is directly dependent on fruit radius, and waterimport rate or dry matter import rate per unit of fruit surfacearea.Copyright 1993, 1999 Academic Press Dry matter, fruit growth, logistic model, sink size, tomato, water transfer  相似文献

Summary Bean and tomato plants were grown in solution culture root media containing pre-determined concentrations of gibberellin A3 (GA), 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), N6-benzyladenine (BA), (2-chloroethyl)trimethylammonium chloride (CCC), and at atmospheric levels of 300 and 1000 ppm of CO2. Net assimilation rates (NAR), relative growth rates (RGR), leaf area ratios (LAR), root to top dry weight ratios (R/T) and changes in dry weight, size, and form of each organ were recorded.Gibberellin had no effect on RGR of either plant species but increased the NAR of tomatoes at 1000 ppm CO2. Total dry weight was only slightly affected by GA but root growth and R/T were markedly depressed. CCC had no effect on NAR, but decreased RCR and LAR. Root growth of beans and R/T in both plants were promoted by CCC. NAR and RGR were strongly inhibited by BA and NAA. Inhibition of stem and leaf growth by CCC and NAA was greater than that for roots; thus, R/T ratios were increased. Root branching was promoted by NAA.High (1000 ppm), compared to the low (300 ppm), atmospheric levels of CO2 generally promoted root growth and produced an increase in the R/T, both in the absence and presence of chemical treatment. The multiplicity of effects of the rootabsorbed chemical growth substances and CO2 on growth and photosynthesis is discussed.Journal article No 3883 of the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station.NATO Fellow, University of Pisa, Italy.  相似文献

During the ripening stage of barley and rice, the sink activitywas defined as the dry matter increase per units sink size, leaf area and time, as follows: NAR = A.SinkW+NAR', where NAR is the net assimilation rate (g d.wt dm–2d–1);A is the sink activity [g d.wt g–1d.wt (ear) dm–2d–1]; Sink W is ear wt per plant at heading (g d.wt);and NAR' is net assimilation rate excluding the assimilate ofsink organ (g d.wt dm–2 d–1). Plant material with 16 combinations of mutually different sink(ear) and source (leaf) size were produced at heading for eachcrop: parts of each leaf and ear were removed to produce fourgrades in barley, and also a part of each leaf was removed producingfour grades for four rice varieties showing different ear size.NAR and NAR' were determined during 26 and 21 d in barley andrice after heading, respectively. Sink activity (A), representedas the assimilation rate induced by the sink organ, was estimatedfrom the relationship between SinkW and NAR using the previousequation. The sink activity was significantly higher in ricewith a value of 0–0.028 g d.wt g–1 d.wt (ear) dm–2d–1 vs. 0–0.0017 in barley, suggesting that therelative role of leaves for grain filling is considerably higherin rice than in barley. The sink activity obtained in the studymight be introduced into a model to predict the yields of barleyand rice. A growth analysis was carried out with sweet pepper grown ina glasshouse. The plants received natural daylight or additionalillumination applied either during or after the natural photopenod. All irradiance conditions were applied at three temperatureregimes. Additional illumination increased leaf number, leaf area andtotal dry weight. At all temperatures the long-day treatmentsshowed a smaller number of leaves, but a larger leaf area whencompared to the short-day treatments with the same daily radiationsum. A lower temperature progressively reduced leaf area. The derived growth analysis quantities showed strong ontogenetictrends. When comparing both methods of applying additional illuminationhigher mean relative growth rates were observed for the long-daytreatments, especially at the lowest temperature. No differencesin mean net assimilation rate were found, but the short-daytreatments showed a reduced mean leaf area ratio. A lower nighttemperature decreased RGR and NAR but did not affect LAR, alower day temperature increased NAR and decreased LAR. Changesin LAR were largely mediated by changes in specific leaf weight. Groundsel (Senecio vulgaris), healthy or infected with rust,Puccinia lagenophorae, was grown at a range of nutrient concentrationsin sand culture. Specific absorption rates calculated on thebasis of root dry weight (SARW) were greater in rusted thancontrol groundsel for nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. Whilethe magnitudes of these stimulations varied, they occurred acrossthe whole range of nutrient concentrations. By contrast, specificabsorption rate on the basis of root length (SARL) were littlechanged by rust at any external nutrient concentration; SARLfor phosphate and potassium were slightly reduced when nutrientswere freely available. Water flux per unit dry root weight and length was stimulatedby rust because transpiration per unit leaf area was more rapidin infected plants after fungal sporulation. However, water-fluxand the rate of uptake of nutrients were correlated only whenexpressed on the basis of root weight and increased transpirationdid not appear to be the mechanism underlying increased rootactivity. Rather, increased SARW for N, P and K could very largelybe attributed to increased shoot demand per unit root, whichresulted from the higher shoot: root (S: R) ratios of infectedindividuals. Changes in S: R accounted for 92, 81 and 57% oftotal variation in SARW for K, P and N respectively. Greatervalues for SARW were possible because specific root length (SRL)increased, producing more functional root per unit root weight. The lack of stimulation in SARL in response to rust could beexplained since the higher SRL of infected plants resulted instable values of shoot weight per unit root length, i.e. shootdemand was not increased by infection on this basis. Sugar-beet and barley were grown in pots outdoors (environmentN) and, for five successive 4-week periods starting at sowing, batches of plants were transferred to three growth rooms whosetemperatures were either similar to the outdoor mean (environmentM), or 3° C hotter (environment H) or 3° C colder (environmentC). Some plants were harvested immediately after treatment;others were returned to environment N and harvested when mature. At the end of period 1, sugar-beet plants from environment Mhad more dry weight and leaf area than those outdoors. Immediatelyafter spending later periods in environment M, plants had smallerleaves and similar dry weight to those continuously outdoors. These differences disappeared by maturity. Warmth in the growthrooms (i.e. the difference H—C) during periods 1, 2, and3, while leaf area was increasing, increased the number andsize of leaves and usually also dry weight; in later periodsit had no effect. The effects induced during periods 2 and 3,but not period 1, persisted to maturity to give greater totaland root dry weight and yield of sugar. The final effects ondry weight were much larger than those immediately after treatment, and were the result of differences in growth outdoors aftertreatment which depended on differences in leaf area; the efficiencyof the leaves was not affected by previous treatment. Transferring barley to environment M from N had inconsistentimmediate effects on leaf area and dry weight which disappearedby the final harvest. Transfer during periods 2 and 3, beforethe ears had started emerging, increased shoot number and delayeddevelopment. The proportion of the ears that ripened and theyield of grain were usually less for plants that had spent aperiod in environment M than for plants permanently outdoors, which also had some green ears. Warmth in the growth rooms duringperiods 1 and 2 increased dry weight and leaf area immediately, but had negligible effects at maturity because the increasesin leaf area did not persist after ear emergence. Warmth laterhastened death of leaves, decreased total dry weight immediatelyand also at maturity, but increased the proportion of ears thatripened and hence usually grain weight. Variation in leaf areaduration after ear emergence (D), determined by effects on thetime the ears emerged and the rate the leaves died, accountedfor most of the variation in grain yield, but warmth after theears emerged decreased grain yield less than proportionallyto the decrease in D. Net assimilation rate (E) of sugar-beet was greater than ofbarley, and decreased less with age. E of both species was usuallygreater in environment M than outdoors in spite of less radiation. It was only slightly affected by temperature. Nitrogen and potassium uptake were increased by treatments thatincreased dry weight. The percentage contents suggest that extrauptake was a consequence and not a cause of the increase indry weight.  相似文献

Seeds of Orla 266, a double cross hybrid of Zea mays, were sownin pots in the open 3, 6, and 9 weeks before the individualplants were sampled at consecutive weekly intervals from theend of August. On each occasion the weights of the whole plantand its parts plus leaf area were recorded, and the proceduresof growth analysis applied to the data. Between the youngest and oldest plants over all occasions thegreatest reductions with age were for the rate of leaf expansionand the ratio of leaf area to leaf weight. The net assimilationrate (NAR) and the leaf weight ratio (LWR) were depressed leastwhile the relative growth-rate (RGR) and leaf area ratio (LAR)occupied an intermediate position. The age effects were mostpronounced for RGR, NAR and the ratio of leaf area to leaf weightat the beginning of the experiment, whereas for LAR and LWRthe divergencies were largest at the end. On the basis of the recorded changes in solar radiation andtemperature and prior studies of the interacting effects oflight and temperature on the vegetative growth of Zea it waspossible to predict for the several growth components the patternsof change which should be expected. For the youngest and intermediatepopulations there was close agreement between the expected andobserved values for RGR, NAR, and LAR and it was concluded thatthe time courses were primarily dependent on environmental factors. On the other hand, for the oldest plants from the third intervalonwards the observed values for NAR and less so for RGR werematerially above expectation. It was noted that this divergencecoincided with the rapid extension of the shoot which was confinedto the oldest plants. It is advanced that the higher NAR isassociated with the vertical separation of the leaves.  相似文献

Summary The response of the cotton plant (Gossypium hirsutum L.) to 9.0 and 12.5 cm intra- and 75.0 and 96.5 cm inter-row spacing was studied under irrigation with saline water (5.5 dS/m, SAR 18). In general, the dry weight per plant matter, the leaf area, number of bolls and flowers, and yield per plant were all affected significantly by intra-row spacing but, not by inter-row spacing. However, on a unit area basis, they were affected only by the inter-row spacing. This indicates that competition between plants exists when intra-row spacing is reduced, whereas no significant competition occurs due to a decrease in the inter-row spacing. Although the effect of intra-row spacing on yield for a unit area was found to be not significant, the effect of inter-row spacing was significant. Yield in plots with the conventional spacing (96.5 cm between rows and 12.5 cm between plants in the row) was 4863 kg/ha, whereas the yield in plots with 75 cm between rows was about 23% higher (5974 kg/ha). The lint percentage and the plant height were not affected significantly by either intra- or inter-row spacings.Contribution from the Institute of Soils and Water, Agricultural Research Organization, The Volcani Center, Bet Dagan 50250, Israel. Potato production in the tropical lowlands during the rainyseason is constrained by high temperature and low irradiance. This study examined the effect of these two variables on drymatter production and allocation, using plant growth, leaf anatomy, gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements. Plantsof two clones, Solanum goniocalyx cv. Garhuash Huayro (GH) andDTO-33, a heat tolerant clone of S. tuberosum x S. phureja, were grown in growth chambers at 33/25 °C or 20/10 °Cday/night temperature. At each temperature, plants were grownin either 12 h high irradiance (430–450 µmol m–2s–1 PAR) or 12 h low irradiance (250–280 µmolm–2 s–1) both with a 6–h photoperiod extensionof 6 µmol m–2 s–1. Plants were harvested after10 d (initial harvest) and after 20 d (final harvest). By theend of the study DTO-33 had produced more dry matter and hadtuberized, whereas GH had a greater leaf area ratio (LAR) andspecific leaf area (SLA). The highest relative growth rate (RGR)was at low temperature and low irradiance, possibly due to acombination of thin leaves with a large surface area. At thehigh temperature, low irradiance had the opposite effect, producingthe lowest net assimilation rate (NAR) and lowest RGR. Bothtuber number and weight were markedly reduced by high temperature.Low irradiance, in combination with high temperature, producedvirtually no tubers. Stomatal density, which was greater onGH than in DTO-33, was increased at high temperature. When measuredat 30 °C both clones, especially DTO-33, showed heat-adaptationin terms of ability to maintain a high rate of net photosynthesisat 30 °C. Plants grown at high irr-adiance and low temperaturehad the lowest net photosynthetic rate at 30 °C. Concurrentmeasurements of chlorophyll fluorescence indicated that onlythe initial (O) fluorescence parameter was affected. The dataconfirm the field observation that reduction in potato growthat high temperature can be aggravated by lower irradiance. Thisreduction is associated with a reduced leaf area and NAR. Characters obtained by growth analysis techniques were studiedin seven sugar-cane clones and their seedling progenies froma ratton crop 139 days after virgin harvest. Significant differences in progeny means for Rwand EAwere mainlyaccounted for by differences in L. Four select clones had amean Rw and mean EA which, when adjusted to allow for theirsuperior L, were significantly greater than average (P< 0.05).This illustrated that for selection to be effective from theprogenies, segregants with improved L and better leaf-area dependencemust be isolated. The estimates obtained of both L and EA wereeffective in predicting final weight of cane. Variance componentsindicated especially large ‘male X female’ interactionin progeny means. Some evidence was obtained to suggest thatleaf-area ration is a character which could be used in selectingsmall plots for weight.  相似文献

Three experiments on the growth of watered nursery oil palmsare described, the results of which provide estimates of seasonalvariation in net assimilation rate (EA) and relative growth-rate(Rw) in the tropics (6° 33' N.). The range of values obtained for EA and Rw is similar to thatfound with seedlings and during early growth in the nursery(EA = o.I8–o.32 g/dm2/week, Rw= o.84–I.70 per cent/day)and there is very little effect of season on EA; such variationas exists appears to be related to solar radiation. A spacing experiment indicated that EA is independent of leafarea index (L) when L is below about 2.2, but that above thislevel EA decreases with increasing L, falling to zero at L =5.4. The crop growth-rate (C) is maximal when L is between 2.5and 3, the maximum value observed was o.62 g/dm2/week (equivalentto 3.22 x104 kg/ha/annum). These results are compared with other estimates of growth andassimilation rates of seedling, nursery and adult oil palms, and are discussed in relation to the efficiency of energy fixation, and apparent growth-rates.  相似文献

Changes in the dry weight (dry wt.), total and neutral lipids, and fatty acid composition were determined in the cotyledonsand axis of Citrullus lanatus cv. Sugar baby seedlings duringtheir first 12 d growth in the dark, at 25 ? 1 ?C. The major stored reserves were mobilized between days 3 and8. The lipid concentration after day 4 decreased rapidly inthe cotyledons. On the first day the lipid concentration inthe axis was higher than in the cotyledons but decreased rapidlyand from day 5 up to the end of the experiments it remainedat very low values. In the cotyledons, the change in the fattyacid composition was relatively small compared to the significantchange observed in the axis. The neutral lipids of the cotyledonsdecreased sharply between days 2 and 6 while their fatty acidcomposition suffered no significant change. The axis, comparedto the cotyledons, contained a small but concentrated amountof neutral lipids, which decreased up to day 6. Thereafter,an increase was observed. The fatty acid composition of theaxis neutral lipids changed significantly, linoleic and oleicacid decreased while palmitic and linolenic acid increased.
