The aim of this work is to study the effect of the vitrification procedure on prenatal survival and on placental development at the end of gestation in rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). One hundred eighty-one females were slaughtered at 72 h of gestation. Morphologically normal embryos recovered at 72 h of gestation were kept at room temperature until transfer or vitrification. Vitrified embryos (320 embryos) were transferred into a total of 24 does and fresh embryos (712 embryos) were transferred into a total of 43 does. Females were induced to ovulate 72 h before transfer when fresh embryos were transferred and 60 to 63 h before transfer when vitrified embryos were transferred. Each recipient doe received eight embryos into the left oviduct and eight embryos into the right oviduct. The number of implanted embryos was estimated by laparoscopy as number of implantation sites at Day 14 of gestation. Recipient females were slaughtered by stunning and exsanguination 25 d after the transfer, and fetuses were classified according to their status. Live fetuses and fetal and maternal placenta were weighed Pregnancy rate was defined as the total number of females having at least one live fetus at Day 28 of gestation divided by the total number of females. Prenatal survival was estimated as live fetuses at Day 28 of gestation divided by the number of transferred embryos. The pregnancy rate after transfer of vitrified embryos (92%) was similar to that achieved with fresh embryos (86%), but prenatal survival was lower for vitrified than for fresh embryos (53% vs. 34%). We did not find differences in embryo survival from 72 h to implantation. Transfer of vitrified embryos reduced fetal survival from implantation to Day 28 (57% vs. 82%). Differences in the number of live fetuses at Day 28 of gestation were mainly due to the higher fetal mortality observed soon after implantation in pregnancies resulting from the transfer of vitrified embryos. A higher percentage of decidual reactions and atrophic maternal placentas (27.5% vs. 8.3%) and also of atrophic fetal and maternal placentas (12.1% vs. 5.3%) were observed after transfer of vitrified embryos. Both treatments showed similar percentage of dead fetuses (3.3% vs. 4%). Maternal placenta of the fetuses from fresh embryos was 15% heavier than maternal placenta of fetuses from vitrified embryos.  相似文献

Cryptic reproductive isolation in the Drosophila simulans species complex   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Forms of reproductive isolation that act after copulation but before fertilization are potentially important components of speciation, but are studied only infrequently. We examined postmating, prezygotic reproductive isolation in three hybridizations within the Drosophila simulans species complex. We allowed females to mate only once, observed and timed all copulations, dissected a subset of the females to track the storage and retention of sperm, examined the number and hatchability of eggs laid after insemination, counted all progeny produced, and measured the longevity of mated females. Each of the three hybridizations is characterized by a different set of cryptic barriers to heterospecific fertilization. When D. simulans females mate with D. sechellia males, few heterospecific sperm are transferred, even during long copulations. In contrast, copulations of D. simulans females with D. mauritiana males are often too short to allow sperm transfer. Those that are long enough to allow insemination, however, involve the transfer of many sperm, but only a fraction of these heterospecific sperm are stored by females, who also lay fewer eggs than do D. simulans females mated with conspecific males. Finally, when D. mauritiana females mate with D. simulans males, sperm are transferred and stored in abundance, but are lost rapidly from the reproductive tract and are therefore used inefficiently. These results add considerably to the list of reproductive isolating mechanisms in this well-studied clade and possibly to the list of evolutionary processes that could contribute to their reproductive isolation.  相似文献

The social interactions between young male Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) and members of two adjacent groups were studied. Young males usually associated with members of a single group. Although some young males occasionally interacted with members of the neighboring group, the frequency of their intergroup affiliative interactions was much lower than that of their intragroup interactions. The intergroup affiliative interactions were less symmetrical than the intragroup interactions. Three- or four-year-old males who remained in their natal group interacted with males of the neighboring group, whereas males over 5 years old did not. Young males revealed a dramatic change in their association partners from males in one group to those in another during the course of their intergroup transfer. Males who remained in their natal group did not attempt to interact with females of the neighboring group. In contrast, males who had transferred to a non-natal group interacted with females in their natal group. It is suggested that intergroup affiliative interactions and intergroup transfer of young male macaques are influenced by close associations between males. The immediate motivation for transfer of young natal macaques may be some attraction to males outside their group rather than sexual attraction to unfamiliar females.  相似文献

Dispersals by subadult or adult male baboons are common. In contrast, the occasional transfer of aged baboons is puzzling, given the physical dangers of transfer and the cognitive demands of mastering the ecological and social rules of a new troop. The present data suggest a possible explanation for such transfers in a study of two troops of olive baboons (Papio anubis) in Kenya. Aged males who remained in the troop in which they had been dominant were subjected to significantly higher rates of approach-avoid interactions by the current high-ranking cohort (i.e., the individuals they had dominated years past) when compared to males who had transferred into the troop in their old age. Thus, transfer in old age offers the advantage of relative anonymity. Of the 14 males who progressed into older adulthood in the same troop in which they were in their prime, seven ultimately transferred to a different troop. The seven who remained and the seven who transferred did not differ in the rate at which they were subjected to approach-avoid interactions. However, those who remained had significantly higher rates of various affiliative behaviors (copulations, consortships, grooming and contact with females, and positive interactions with infants). Thus, amid the disadvantages of an old age spent in the troop in which a male baboon was in his prime, a high degree of social affiliation might constitute a sufficient disincentive against transferring. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Recent studies suggest that sperm production and transfer may have significant costs to males. Male sperm investment into a current copulation may therefore influence resources available for future matings, which selects for male strategic mating investment. In addition, females may also benefit from actively or passively altering the number of sperm transferred by males. In the scorpionfly Panorpa cognata, the number of sperm transferred during copulation depended on copulation duration and males in good condition (residual weight) copulated longer and also transferred more sperm. Moreover, sperm transferred and stored per unit time was higher in copulations with females in good condition than in copulations with females in poor condition. Males varied greatly and consistently in their sperm transfer rate, indicative of costs associated with this trait. The duration of the pairing prelude also varied between males and correlated negatively with the male's sperm transfer rate, but no other male character correlated significantly with male sperm transfer rate. The results are consistent with strategic mating effort but sperm transfer could also be facilitated by the physical size of females and/or females in good condition may be more cooperative during sperm transfer.  相似文献

In this study, we examined which sex controls sperm transfer during copulation in scorpionflies. Therefore male scorpionflies were doubly mated to females of high and low fecundity to explore whether they allocate sperm according to female quality. While mating order had no effect males transferred sperm at higher rates when mating with low‐quality instead of high‐quality females. As there is no obvious benefit from providing low‐fecundity females with more sperm, we suggest a condition‐dependent female ability to counteract sperm transfer. Therefore, we disabled females at the beginning of copulations using the insecticide Propoxur which leads to total paralysis caused by tremors. While the provoked muscle contractions led to significantly smaller numbers of sperm transferred, Propoxur treatment had no effect on males. We suggest female counteracting of sperm transfer to be adaptive by decreasing the relative amount of sperm transferred by low‐quality males and increasing the proportion of offspring sired by high‐quality males.  相似文献

Mothers can improve the quality of their offspring by increasing the level of certain components in their eggs. To examine whether or not mothers increase deposition of such components in eggs as a function of food availability, we food-supplemented black-legged kittiwake females (Rissa tridactyla) before and during egg laying and compared deposition of androgens and antibodies into eggs of first and experimentally induced replacement clutches. Food-supplemented females transferred lower amounts of androgens and antibodies into eggs of induced replacement clutches than did non-food-supplemented mothers, whereas first clutches presented no differences between treatments. Our results suggest that when females are in lower condition, they transfer more androgens and antibodies into eggs to facilitate chick development despite potential long-term costs for juveniles. Females in prime condition may avoid these potential long-term costs because they can provide their chicks with more and higher quality resources.  相似文献

The prevalence and evolutionary consequences of cryptic female choice (CFC) remain highly controversial, not least because the processes underlying its expression are often concealed within the female reproductive tract. However, even when female discrimination is relatively easy to observe, as in numerous insect species with externally attached spermatophores, it is often difficult to demonstrate directional CFC for certain male phenotypes over others. Using a biological assay to separate male crickets into attractive or unattractive categories, we demonstrate that females strongly discriminate against unattractive males by removing their spermatophores before insemination can be completed. This results in significantly more sperm being transferred by attractive males than unattractive males. Males respond to CFC by mate guarding females after copulation, which increases the spermatophore retention of both attractive and unattractive males. Interestingly, unattractive males who suffered earlier interruption of sperm transfer benefited more from mate guarding, and they guarded females more vigilantly than attractive males. Our results suggest that postcopulatory mate guarding has evolved via sexual conflict over insemination times rather than through genetic benefits of biasing paternity toward vigorous males, as has been previously suggested.  相似文献

Implantation and early pregnancy, and the potential effects of the reproductive-hormone relaxin, were examined in the cynomolgus macaque (Macaca fascicularis) following in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer. Mature oocytes were collected from regularly cycling, female cynomolgus monkeys subjected to ovarian superovulation using recombinant human FSH and hCG. Oocytes fertilized in vitro were cultured to the 4- to 8-cell stage, slow-cooled, and stored in liquid nitrogen before thawing and embryo transfer. Regularly cycling recipients were administered recombinant human relaxin or vehicle for 21 days through the peri-implantation period (Day 0 = pump implantation), during which time the thawed embryos were transferred (Day 7). Endometrial thickness and the number of gestational sacs were monitored by ultrasound at three time points (Days 7, 21, and 28). The number of days of placental sign (implantation bleeding) in pregnant females and menses in nonpregnant females were also recorded. Implantation (gestational sacs/embryo transferred) and multiple pregnancy (multiple gestations/ pregnant recipient) rates were slightly higher in relaxin-treated recipients compared to vehicle-treated recipients. Administration of relaxin was associated with increased implantation bleeding in pregnant females. Endometrial thickness was increased in relaxin-treated recipients at Days 7 and 28 compared to Day 0, but these differences were not observed at the same time points in vehicle-treated females. Systemic administration of recombinant human relaxin in an in vitro fertilization/embryo transfer setting was associated with effects consistent with a role for this hormone in endometrial physiology in primates.  相似文献

Abstract Three manipulations of the male contribution to copulation were used to investigate what determines the switch-off of female receptivity that follows mating in Lucilia cuprina. Multiple matings by males led to a reduction in their effectiveness at switching-off females: the first twelve matings caused more than 50% of females to be switched-off 1 day after mating, while the first four matings caused more than 50% of females to be switched-off for 7 days after mating. Males mated up to twenty-three times and on average ten times during 10 h of continuous access to virgin females. The number of sperm transferred declined logarithmically through a series of matings as did the quantity of material transferred from the male accessory gland (measured as radiolabeled material) through the first six matings. Overnight isolation of multiply-mated males led to considerable recovery of their ability to switch-off females, and to limited renewal of their ability to transfer sperm. Castrated males transferred similar quantities of accessory gland material to females as did sham-operated males during their first five matings and in their first three matings switched-off 95% of females for 1 day but only 48% for 7 days. When normal mating pairs were separated at increasing intervals after coupling, an increasing proportion of females were switched-off at 1 or 7 days afterward. 7 days after 2 min matings no females were switched-off though 40% of the number of sperm transferred in a full mating had been transferred by this time. The proposed explanation for these data is that both the initial switch-off and its duration are determined by the quantity of a receptivity-inhibiting substance that normally enters the female haemo-lymph after being injected by the male into the wall of the bursa copulatrix. It is proposed that when castrated males mate, an absence of sperm results in most accessory gland secretion entering the empty spermathecae (rather than the wall of the bursa as usually occurs) and hence being unable to reach the haemolymph and exert its influence. The effective dose of the receptivity-inhibiting substance is measured on a logarithmic scale.  相似文献

The short-term effects of cryopreservation and embryo transfer are well documented (reduced embryo viability, changes in pattern expression), but little is known about their long-term effects. We examined the possibility that embryo vitrification and transfer in rabbit could have an impact on the long-term reproductive physiology of the offspring and whether these phenotypes could be transferred to the progeny. Vitrified rabbit embryos were warmed and transferred to recipient females (F0). The offspring of the F0 generation were the F1 generation (cryopreserved animals). Females from F1 generation offspring were bred to F1 males to generate an F2 generation. In addition, two counterpart groups of noncryopreserved animals were bred and housed simultaneously to F1 and F2 generations (CF1 and CF2, respectively). The reproductive traits studied in all studied groups were litter size (LS), number born alive at birth (BA), and postnatal survival at Day 28 (number of weaned/number born alive expressed as percentage). The reproductive traits were analyzed using Bayesian methodology. Features of the estimated marginal posterior distributions of the differences between F1 and their counterparts (F1 − CF1) and between F2 and their counterparts (F2 − CF2) in reproductive characters found that vitrification and transfer procedures cause a consistent increase in LS and BA between F1 and CF1 females (more than 1.4 kits in LS and more than 1.3 BA) and also between F2 and CF2 females (0.96 kits in LS and 0.94 BA). We concluded that embryo cryopreservation and transfer procedures have long-term effects on derived female reproduction (F1 females) and transgenerational effects on female F1 offspring (F2 females).  相似文献

Stages of Metaseiulus occidentalis sensitive to photoperiod induction of diapause were determined by transferring various stadia into diapause-inducing conditions, and rearing them until adult females could be scored for reproductive condition. When eggs were transferred to 10 hr light at 19°C from 24 hr light at 25°C and the mites reared to adults, 92 per cent entered diapause. When larvae and all subsequent stages were kept under the inductive conditions, 62 per cent of adult females diapaused. Mites transferred as protonymphs into inductive conditions yielded only 10 per cent in diapause, and mites transferred as deutonymphs or newly emerged females did not enter diapause. However, adult females reared from eggs at 19°C under 12 hr light (which is near the critical photophase of 11·2 hr at 19°C) showed an unexpected sensitivity to photoperiod. Some newly emerged females oviposited upon transfer to an 8 hr photophase at 19°C. Some then stopped ovipositing and apparently entered diapause; these females resumed ovipositing after intervals ranging from 34 to 100 days. This was termed ‘switching’ into diapause. Some females reared under a 16 hr photophase at 19°C ‘switched’ also upon transfer as adults to shorter photophases—either 8 or 12 hr at 19°C. Thus, ‘switching’ may be due to transfer to shorter photophases. Promptness of mating vs delayed mating allowed ‘switching’ to be more easily detected.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To assess the outcome of pregnancy for women booking for home births in an inner London practice between 1977 and 1989. DESIGN--Retrospective review of practice obstetric records. SETTING--A general practice in London. SUBJECTS--285 women registered with the practice or referred by neighbouring general practitioners or local community midwives. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Place of birth and number of cases transferred to specialist care before, during, and after labour. RESULTS--Of 285 women who booked for home births, eight left the practice area before the onset of labour, giving a study population of 277 women. Six had spontaneous abortions, 26 were transferred to specialist care during pregnancy, another 26 were transferred during labour, and four were transferred in the postpartum period. 215 women (77.6%, 95% confidence interval 72.7 to 82.5) had normal births at home without needing specialist help. Transfer to specialist care during pregnancy was not significantly related to parity, but nulliparous women were significantly more likely to require transfer during labour (p = 0.00002). Postnatal complications requiring specialist attention were uncommon among mothers delivered at home (four cases) and rare among their babies (three cases). CONCLUSIONS--Birth at home is practical and safe for a self selected population of multiparous women, but nulliparous women are more likely to require transfer to hospital during labour because of delay in labour. Close cooperation between the general practitioner and both community midwives and hospital obstetricians is important in minimising the risks of trial of labour at home.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Pseudaletia unipuncta (Haw.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) virgin females, maintained at either 10 or 25d?C under LD 12:12 or 16:8 h, started calling at different ages. For a given photoperiod, calling was initiated 11 days later at 10d?C than at 25d?C, while for a given temperature, calling at LD 12:12 h was 3–4 days later than at LD 16:8 h. At 10d?C 50.8% of females did not call within 35 days at LD 12:12 h compared with 30.8% at LD 16:8 h. Calling started earlier in the scotophase at 10d?C than at 25d?C and at LD 16:8 h than at LD 12:12 h. Under all treatments calling generally advanced on successive nights. The time elapsed between the mean onset time of calling and the mid-scotophase was relatively constant under both photoperiod conditions at 25d?C, but at 10d?C was more variable. The mean time spent calling increased significantly with calling age but did not differ significantly between the four experimental conditions tested. Older (15 days) females transferred from 10d?C, LD 16:8 h to 25d?C at either LD 163 or 12:12 h, required less time to initiate calling than younger (5 days) ones. Those transferred from 10d?C, LD 12:12 h took the same time, regardless of their age at the time of the transfer. Females experiencing either a decrease or increase in daylength as well as a temperature increase, required respectively more or less time to initiate calling, compared with individuals that only experienced an increase in temperature. If temperature was the only parameter changed females that initiated calling soon after the transfer immediately adjusted their calling periodicity to prevailing conditions. When both temperature and photoperiod were altered, it took several days before calling periodicity adjusted to the new regime. The ecological implications of temperature and photoperiodic conditions on the possible autumn migration of P. unipuncta are discussed.  相似文献

The lipid metabolism was investigated during six gonotrophic cycles of Aedes aegypti. Females of constant body size were analyzed for their total lipid content: large females with a body size of 41.06 (wing length cubed) and small females with 15.63. Their lipid contents at eclosion were compared to lipid values after two days of sugar-feeding, shortly before a blood meal, after oviposition, of their total egg batches, and again before the next blood meal, with intermittent access to sugar for two days for six gonotrophic cycles.Large females transferred most of their pre-blood meal lipid into the ovaries. Their low lipid content after oviposition was restored by synthesis from intermittent sugar meals. After the third gonotrophic cycle, they withheld more and more of the resynthesized lipid in their fat body, thus gradually reducing their fecundity. Since blood consumption was not altered significantly during these six cycles, age-related reduction of fecundity was clearly caused by limitations of yolk lipid.Small females transferred a considerably smaller, but constant segment of sugar-derived lipids to the ovaries. In both size classes, lipid content per oocyte was constant throughout all cycles with 9 mcal/oocyte in large and 7 mcal/oocyte in small females. Total fecundity reached 450 eggs in large and 280 eggs in small females. Large females that were maintained on water without sucrose took large blood meals from which part of the yolk lipid was synthesized. Extrapolations suggest that only one or two additional gonotrophic cycles would be possible without additional carbohydrate sources, despite lipogenesis from blood protein.  相似文献

1. One at a time during the reproductive period of amictic females, oocytes fill with yolk and undergo a mitotic maturation division (oogenesis), are oviposited as single cells, and then develop parthenogenetically into females. Sexual reproduction in Brachionus and several other genera is initiated when amictic females are crowded and oviposit some eggs induced to differentiate into mictic females. Mictic females produce haploid eggs that can develop parthenogentically into males or be fertilised and develop into diapausing embryos called resting eggs. 2. This study examines the time when oocytes in amictic females respond to maternal population density. Is the fate of all oocytes in the germarium irreversibly determined during the early postnatal life of the mother, or is each oocyte labile until just before oviposition? In the former case, the probability of an amictic female producing a mictic daughter at any time throughout her reproductive period would reflect the population density she experienced while young and not that at the time she oviposited an egg. 3. Amictic females of two clones of a Florida strain of B. calyciflorus were cultured singly from birth at a low or high density (in a large or small volume) until about halfway through their reproductive period and then switched (experimental treatment), or not (control treatment), to the other density condition. The results indicate that the female fate of an oocyte is determined by maternal population density during oogenesis. Eggs oviposited soon after transfer from low to high density had the same, or a higher, probability of becoming mictic females compared with those produced by control females kept at the high density; eggs oviposited after transfer from the high to the low density had the same low probability of becoming mictic females as those produced by control females kept at the low density. 4. Control females kept at the high density were less likely to produce mictic daughters as they aged. This decline is not because of a decreased propensity of older females to respond to crowding, as older females responded maximally when transferred from a low to a high population density. 5. As oocytes in amictic females respond to maternal population density only during oogenesis, there is a negligible lag between the population‐density signal in the environment and the commitment to sexual reproduction. This minimises the obligatory two‐generation lag between this signal and production of resting eggs, and thus reduces the possibility that crowding will lead to food limitation before production of these eggs.  相似文献

Reproducing Varroa females begin oviposition on a host larva by laying an unfertilized (male) egg, followed by fertilized (female) offspring. Using transfer experiments, we examined whether the sequence of sexes in the brood cell is triggered by a host stimulus. When reproducing Varroa females were transferred from white-eyed pupae (worker brood) into freshly capped worker brood cells, 77% (n = 22 fertile mites after the transfer) began a new reproductive cycle by laying a male egg. The proportion of brood cells with male offspring was similar to naturally infested brood cells. Varroa females transferred into brood cells with young pupae reproduced, but only 6% (n = 16 fertile mites after the transfer) produced male offspring. This was significantly different from male production in naturally reproducing Varroa females and those transferred into freshly capped brood cells. We conclude that a host stimulus present in freshly capped brood cells triggers both the start of reproduction and the sequence of sexes.  相似文献

The weights of embryos and their placentas obtained by blastocysts of CBA/LacY and DBA/2 mouse strains transfer in recipient females of BALB/c strain and also by blastocysts of BALB/c mouse strain transfer in recipient females of CBA/LacY strain were analysed on the 16th gestation day. It is shown that placental weights are determined by genotypic peculiarities of embryos, although comparative placental weights of different strain embryos could also depend on females fertility. The weight of allogenic embryos (developed from transferred blastocysts) significantly excessed the weight of singenic embryos, and most significant differences were noted in females with small number of embryos. The possibilities to solve some applied and fundamental problems of mammalian reproduction given by the method of interstrain and interbreed early stage embryos transfer are discussed.  相似文献

Intraoviductal oocyte transfer in combination with in vivo fertilization has arisen as an alternative method to induce pregnancies from cryopreserved oocytes in rabbits. In this study, offspring were obtained for the first time from vitrified rabbit oocytes using this technique. In all the experiments, recipients were artificially inseminated 9 hours before oocyte transfer. Cryopreserved (vitrified and slow-frozen) and noncryopreserved (fresh) oocytes were transferred into both oviducts, which were immediately closed using cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive to block the entry of the recipient's own oocytes. Three transferred group females that received vitrified oocytes became pregnant and delivered a total of nine live young naturally. The results revealed that there were no differences in the live birth rate between vitrified and slow-frozen oocytes (5.5% and 4.4%, respectively). When fresh oocytes were transferred, this rate increased to 19.2%, whereas in the control females (nontransferred) the rate of offspring obtained was 71.4%. This is the first reported result of the development to term of vitrified rabbit oocytes and suggests that an in vivo environment could help improve the results of oocyte cryopreservation.  相似文献

Female dispersal occurs in a number of primate species. It may be related to: avoidance of inbreeding, reduction in food competition, reduction of predation risk, or avoidance of infanticide in combination with mate choice. Female dispersal was studied for a 5-year period in a wild population of Thomas langurs (Presbytis thomasi) that lived in one-male multi-female groups. Juvenile and adult individuals of both sexes were seen to disperse. Females appeared to transfer unhindered between groups, mostly from a larger group to a recently formed smaller one. They transferred without their infants and when not pregnant, and seemed to transfer preferentially during periods when extra-group males were harassing their group. During these inter-group encounters extra-group males seemed to try to commit infanticide. Thus, the timing of female transfer was probably closely linked to infanticide avoidance. Moreover, females seemed to transfer when the resident male of their group was no longer a good protector. The observations in the present study suggest that females transferred to reduce the risk of infanticide. Female dispersal may have another ultimate advantage as well, namely inbreeding avoidance. Due to the dispersal of both females and males the social organization of Thomas langurs was rather fluid. New groups were formed when females joined a male; male takeovers were not observed. Bisexual groups had only a limited life span, because all adult females of a bisexual group could emigrate. This pattern of unhindered female dispersal affects male reproductive strategies, and in particular it might lead to infanticidal behavior during inter-group encounters. Am. J.
