The horsefly (Diptera: Tabanidae) fauna of Jordan consists of 21 species belonging to seven genera. The present study adds 17 new records to this little-known group of haematophagous insects. Most of the new records were collected from several localities within the Jordan Valley. These new records are Chrysops flavipes Meigen, Atylotus farinosus (Szilády), Dasyrhamphis umbrinus (Meigen), Haematopota coronata Austen, Hybomitra decora (Loew), Hybomitra mendica (Villeneuve), Tabanus accensus Austen, T. albifacies Loew, T. bifarius Loew, T. darimonti Leclercq, T. laetetinctus Becker, T. leleani Austen, T. pallidipes Austen, T. regularis Jaennicke, T. rupinae Austen, T. sufis Jaennicke and Therioplectes tunicatus (Szilády). Tabanus albifacies and T. sufis were the most common species collected by hand nets (19.85% and 17.73%, respectively) and D. umbrinus, Haematopota minuscula Austen, and Haematopota coronata were the least common species (0.12% for each). Zoogeographical analysis of the recorded species showed that 12 species are of Mediterranean origin, four are of Afrotropical origin, two of European origin and at least three species can be considered as endemic to the Middle East.  相似文献

The biting flies Chrysops dimidiatus Wulp and C.silaceus Austen (Diptera: Tabanidae), vectors of Loa loa (Cobbold) (Nematoda: Onchocercidae) on the African mainland, were found to be widespread on the island of Bioko (Equatorial Guinea) during 1996-2001. These tabanids were particularly prevalent in the southern part of Bioko, indicating potential transmission of loiasis on the island. The only other tabanids previously recorded on Bioko, Tabanus argenteus Surcouf (from 1915) and Haematopota near heptagramma Speiser (from 1933), were also collected. The possibility of loiasis being endemic on Bioko contra-indicates ivermectin treatment of onchocerciasis cases, due to risks of adverse side-effects.  相似文献

Field-collected South African Culicoides species (Diptera, Ceratopogonidae) were fed on sheep blood containing bluetongue virus (BTV) represented by 13 low-passage reference serotypes: -1, -2, -4, -6, -7, -8, -9, -10, -11, -12, -13, -16 and -19. After 10 days of extrinsic incubation at 23.5 degrees C, of the 13 serotypes used, seven were recovered from C. (Avaritia) imicola Kieffer and 11 from C. (A.) bolitinos Meiswinkel. Virus recovery rates and the mean titres for most serotypes were significantly higher in C. bolitinos than in C. imicola. In addition, BTV was recovered from three non-Avaritia Culicoides species, namely C. (Remmia) enderleini Cornet & Brunhes (BTV-9), C. (Hoffmania) milnei Austen (BTV-4) and C. (H.) zuluensis de Meillon (BTV-16). No virus could be recovered from 316 individuals representing a further 14 Culicoides species. In Culicoides species fed on blood containing similar or identical virus titres of distinct BTV serotypes, significant differences were found in virus recovery rates. The results of this study confirm the higher vector competence of C. bolitinos compared with C. imicola.  相似文献

Seasonal activity of the loiasis vectors Chrysops dimidiata Wulp and Chrysops silacea Austen (Diptera: Tabanidae) was studied during 1987-89 in villages and surrounding forest of the Chaillu Mountains, Congo. Chrysops were captured mainly in the hot rainy season (November-May) and densities of both species were higher in the forest than in villages. C.silacea predominated at all sites and C.dimidiata was rarely found in villages. In the rain forest, between 07.00 and 18.00 hours, 12 times more C.silacea and 3 times more C.dimidiata were collected with hand-nets (range 15-81 per man-day) than were caught in landing/biting collections on human bait. Chrysops man-biting rates were higher in villages closer to the forest, but variations in loiasis prevalence among villagers (microfilaraemia rates 16-37%) were not proportional to the intensity of contact between people and vectors in the villages, indicating that the majority of loiasis transmission probably occurs when people go into the forest.  相似文献

The abundance and species diversity of tabanids were evaluated by trapping of insects using Vavoua traps, during the rainy season, from October 4 to November 30, 2009, in three different habitats: primary forest, secondary forest and village, in the biosphere reserve Ipassa-IRET Makokou in Gabon. Eight species belonging to three genera of tabanids have been identified for a total of 402 specimens caught. The tabanid species numerically the most abundant were: Tabanus secedens Walker, 1854 (55.2%), Tabanus obscurehirtus Ricardo, 1908 (13.9%), Chrysops dimidiatus Wulp, 1885 (11.2%) and Chrysops silaceus Austen, 1907 (10.7%). The less abundant species were Tabanus par Walker, 1854 (3.2%), Tabanus besti arbucklei Austen, 1912 (3%), Tabanus marmorosus congoicola Bequaert, 1930 (1%) and Ancala fasciata fasciata (Fabricius, 1775) (0.5%). Specimens of the genera Tabanus and Chrysops could not be identified, these insects represented respectively 0.7% and 0.5% of the insects trapped. The highest proportion of tabanids was trapped in secondary forest (75.1%) and the lower in primary forest (4.5%).  相似文献

In her final fragmentary novel Sanditon, Jane Austen develops a theme that pervades her work from her juvenilia onward: illness, and in particular, illness imagined, invented, or self-inflicted. While the “invention of odd complaints” is characteristically a token of folly or weakness throughout her writing, in this last work imagined illness is also both a symbol and a cause of how selves and societies degenerate. In the shifting world of Sanditon, hypochondria is the lubricant for a society bent on turning health into a commodity. As a result, people’s rationality and their moral character come under attack. Catherine Belling’s recent subtle study, A Condition of Doubt: The Meanings of Hypochondria, unveils hypochondria’s discursive and cultural character. Running sharply against the tenor of Austen’s treatment, however, she argues in defense of the rationality of hypochondriacs; the notion that the condition may involve morally significant defects is not entertained; any connection to the commercialization of health care is muted. Here, I contrast Austen’s morally and epistemically negative rendering of her hypochondriacal characters in Sanditon with Belling’s efforts to create a sympathetic understanding of people with hypochondria. I will argue that, despite time gaps and genre differences, joint consideration of these texts can help bioethicists better appreciate how medicine can intensify, pathologize, and exploit anxieties about illness and death, thus adding to the challenges of living well in the face of mortality and morbidity.  相似文献

In addition to bronchial smooth muscle, histamine and other mediators act in bronchial asthma on the microcirculation of pulmonary connective tissue. The mediators induce enhanced blood flow, and by acting on the blood-tissue barrier, they induce increase in vasopermeability with edema and in more severe injury microhemorrhage and microthrombosis and infiltration of the connective tissue by leukocytes, predominantly neutrophils. The scheme proposed 10 years ago by K. F. Austen and co-workers in 1976 still holds true: a short-acting humoral-cellular phase is followed by a longer-acting pathopharmacologic or inflammatory phase. Some mediators, including histamine, serotonin, bradykinin, the sulfido leukotrienes and platelet activating factor, have a direct effect on endothelium and smooth muscle cells and more severe injury is due to mediators that exert their effect via neutrophils, which release lysosomal constituents. The intact complement-derived fragments C3a and C5a act directly and for a short period, as do histamine and the other direct-action mediators. The accumulation of neutrophils is brought about by C5a and its stable derivative C5ades Arg, leukotriene B4, PAF, and interleukin-1. Unlike the direct-action mediators, whose effect on the microcirculation does not extend beyond 20-25 min, those mediating via neutrophils have a delayed effect (peak 1-2 h), which parallels the neutrophil influx. The direct action mediators exert their effects on the microcirculation also in neutropenic animals. The most potent agents causing enhanced blood flow are the prostaglandins of the E class. The effect of odour attractants on the composition of samples of Glossina pallidipes Austen was investigated by comparing the age and nutritional status of flies caught in unbaited biconical traps with those caught in traps baited with cow urine and acetone. For both male and female flies, baited traps caught more flies with significantly higher fat content than did unbaited traps. Thus the samples from baited traps were more representative of the population as a whole: males showed a fuller range of the fat/haematin conditions known to occur in the field and proportionately more females were in later stages of the pregnancy cycle, than from unbaited traps.  相似文献

Surveillance data from 268 sites in Sicily are used to develop climatic models for prediction of the distribution of the main European bluetongue virus (BTV) vector Culicoides imicola Kieffer (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) and of potential novel vectors, Culicoides pulicaris Linnaeus, Culicoides obsoletus group Meigen and Culicoides newsteadi Austen. The models containing the 'best' climatic predictors of distribution for each species, were selected from combinations of 40 temporally Fourier-processed remotely sensed variables and altitude at a 1 km spatial resolution using discriminant analysis. Kappa values of around 0.6 for all species models indicated substantial levels of agreement between model predictions and observed data. Whilst the distributions of C. obsoletus group and C. newsteadi were predicted by temperature variables, those of C. pulicaris and C. imicola were determined mainly by normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), a variable correlated with soil moisture and vegetation biomass and productivity. These models were used to predict species presence in unsampled pixels across Italy and for C. imicola across Europe and North Africa. The predicted continuous presence of C. pulicaris along the appenine mountains, from north to south Italy, suggests BTV transmission may be possible in a large proportion of this region and that seasonal transhumance (seasonal movement of livestock between upland and lowland pastures) even in C. imicola-free areas should not generally be considered safe. The predicted distribution of C. imicola distribution shows substantial agreement with observed surveillance data from Greece and Iberia (including the Balearics) and parts of mainland Italy (Lazio, Tuscany and areas of the Ionian coast) but is generally much more restricted than the observed distribution (in Sardinia, Corsica and Morocco). The low number of presence sites for C. imicola in Sicily meant that only a restricted range of potential C. imicola habitats were included in the training set and that predictions could only be made within this range. Future modelling exercises will use abundance data collected according to a standardized protocol across the Mediterranean and, for Sicily in particular, should include non-climatic environmental variables that may influence breeding site suitability such as soil type.  相似文献

Surveillance of Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) biting midges was carried out between 2001 and 2003, at 119 sites within a 50 x 50-km grid distributed across Bulgaria, using light trap collections around the time of peak adult midge abundance. Sentinel and ad hoc serum surveillance of hosts susceptible to bluetongue infection was carried out at around 300 sites between 1999 and 2003. Following the initial incursion of bluetongue virus 9 (BTV-9) into Bourgas province in 1999, affecting 85 villages along the southern border, a further 76 villages were affected along the western border in 2001, with outbreaks extending as far north as 43.6 degrees N. The BTV-9 strain in circulation was found to have a low pathogenicity for Bulgarian sheep populations, with less than 2% of susceptible individuals becoming sick and seroconversions detected up to 30 km from recorded outbreaks in the south. The major Old World vector Culicoides imicola Kieffer was not detected among over 70,000 Culicoides identified in summer collections, suggesting that BTV-9 transmission in Bulgaria was primarily carried out by indigenous European vectors. The most likely candidates, the Palaearctic species complexes - the Culicoides obsoletus Meigen and C. pulicaris L. complexes - were widespread and abundant across the whole country. The C. obsoletus complex represented 75% of all individuals trapped in summer and occurred in high catch sizes (up to 15,000 individuals per night) but was not found across all outbreak sites, indicating that both Palearctic complexes probably played a role in transmission. Within the C. pulicaris complex, only C. pulicaris s.s., C. punctatus Meigen and C. newsteadi Austen were sufficiently abundant and prevalent to have been widely involved in transmission, whilst within the C. obsoletus complex most trapped males were C. obsoletus s.s. Adult vectors were found to be largely absent from sites in west Bulgaria for a period of at least 3 months over winter, which, taken along with the spatiotemporal pattern of outbreaks in the region between years, indicates the virus may be overwintering here by an alternative mechanism - either by covert persistence in the vertebrate host or possibly by persistence in larval stages of the vector.  相似文献

To monitor the quality of male tsetse for use in the sterile insect technique (SIT), a field cage test was developed and evaluated. Mating competitiveness was tested with male Glossina pallidipes Austen that emerged from pupae stored for different periods at 15 degrees C. Control males emerged from pupae stored at 23-24 degrees C and emerged at 26.5 degrees C. Each sample of test males was divided into two groups with one group being irradiated at 120 Gy; the other group was not irradiated. More than 70% of the maximum possible number of mating pairs occurred in all tests. Males emerged from pupae kept at low temperature and then irradiated formed a greater proportion of mating pairs than the controls. Males emerged from pupae kept at 15 degrees C generally started mating more quickly than the standard colony males although there was no significant difference. Insemination rates were above 99%. Pooled data indicated that mean spermathecal values for females mated with irradiated males were significantly lower than for control males. The duration of copulation varied significantly between treatment groups and was significantly longer for irradiated male flies; there was no correlation between duration of copulation and mean spermathecal value.  相似文献

By mark-release-recapture experiments, we assessed the density of loaisis vectors, Chrysops dimidiata Wulp plus some Chrysops silacea Austen (Diptera: Tabanidae) and estimated their range of flight in the secondary forest of southern Cameroon. In 1993, the release point was at the centre of the study area and recapture points were at 1,100 m radius. In 1994, releases were on the periphery of the study area and recapture sites were 400-8,000 m from the release points. Results were concordant and showed Chrysops female densities of 785-3,682 flies/ km2. The theoretical flight range was < 6,000 m, with a maximum distance of 4,500 m observed. These results are considered promising for the use of vector control methods against loaiasis.  相似文献

Previous studies of the amino acid sequence of the NAD-specific glutamate dehydrogenase of Neurospora crassa (EC 1.4.1.2) resulted in the assignments of peptides to four fragments, the longest being the COOH-terminal 669 residues of the protein. A further study of peptides derived by cyanogen bromide cleavage by different separation methods has yielded additional peptides that have provided new information concerning the sequence and has given overlaps of previously known sequences. This has permitted establishment of 313 residues in one sequence (fragment II). This is in addition to a sequence of 43 residues (fragment I) at the NH2-terminal end and a sequence of 669 residues (fragment III) previously established at the COOH-terminal end of the molecule. The present status of our knowledge of the overall sequence is given in the accompanying papers, together with some views regarding the conformation of the protein (Haberland, M.E., Chen, C.-W., and Smith, E.L. A means of contaminating tsetse flies in the field with fluorescent pigment powders has been developed, using pigment in open-ended plastic chambers at the cage position on traps. Glossina pallidipes Austen and G.morsitans morsitans Westwood passed rapidly through the chambers, and on exit were contaminated with consistent doses of powder: about 90 micrograms/fly when powder was presented on the chamber roof and about 28 micrograms/fly when powder was presented on the chamber floor. The technique automatically marks tsetse flies with pigment, cheaply, simply and with the minimum imposition of stress and is expected to be particularly useful in ecological studies. Its potential for marking other biting flies is discussed.  相似文献

The reproductive system of Hydrocena monterosatiana Godwin Austen & Nevill, is described and is simpler in construction than those of other Neritacea. Evidence of fluctuating reproductive condition is given although breeding appears to persist throughout the year. Breeding fluctuations are related to changes in rainfall and their nature is compared with taht in other gastropods from the same locality.  相似文献

Biting midges of the genus Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) are insect vectors of economically important veterinary diseases such as African horse sickness virus and bluetongue virus. However, the identification of Culicoides based on morphological features is difficult. The sequencing of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI), referred to as DNA barcoding, has been proposed as a tool for rapid identification to species. Hence, a study was undertaken to establish DNA barcodes for all morphologically determined Culicoides species in Swedish collections. In total, 237 specimens of Culicoides representing 37 morphologically distinct species were used. The barcoding generated 37 supported clusters, 31 of which were in agreement with the morphological determination. However, two pairs of closely related species could not be separated using the DNA barcode approach. Moreover, Culicoides obsoletus Meigen and Culicoides newsteadi Austen showed relatively deep intraspecific divergence (more than 10 times the average), which led to the creation of two cryptic species within each of C. obsoletus and C. newsteadi. The use of COI barcodes as a tool for the species identification of biting midges can differentiate 95% of species studied. Identification of some closely related species should employ a less conserved region, such as a ribosomal internal transcribed spacer.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to investigate how antennal olfactory cells of tsetse (Diptera: Glossinidae) code odour quality and how they are able to discriminate between attractive and repellent odours. For Glossina pallidipes Austen, a survey is presented of the cells' responses to attractive (1-octen-3-ol, acetone, 3-methylphenol, carbon dioxide) and repellent stimuli (2-methoxyphenol, acetophenone, lactic acid, naphthalene). In addition, the responses of these cells to binary mixtures and the dose-response curves of 1-octen-3-ol, 3-methylphenol, 2-methoxyphenol and acetophenone are presented. A minority of the cells responded to one attractant or repellent only, whereas the vast majority were excited by more than one of the attractive and/or repellent stimuli. It is proposed that the peripheral olfactory cells of tsetse discriminate between different compounds via an across-fibre pattern coding, in which the cells that specifically code for attractants or repellents may play a substantial role in composing a unique excitation pattern that informs the central nervous system about the specificity of odours.  相似文献
