A prominent and influential hypothesis of vision suggests the existence of two separate visual systems within the brain, one creating our perception of the world and another guiding our actions within it. The induced Roelofs effect has been described as providing strong evidence for this perception/action dissociation: When a small visual target is surrounded by a large frame positioned so that the frame's center is offset from the observer's midline, the perceived location of the target is shifted in the direction opposite the frame's offset. In spite of this perceptual mislocalization, however, the observer can accurately guide movements to the target location. Thus, perception is prone to the illusion while actions seem immune. Here we demonstrate that the Roelofs illusion is caused by a frame-induced transient distortion of the observer's apparent midline. We further demonstrate that actions guided to targets within this same distorted egocentric reference frame are fully expected to be accurate, since the errors of target localization will exactly cancel the errors of motor guidance. These findings provide a mechanistic explanation for the various perceptual and motor effects of the induced Roelofs illusion without requiring the existence of separate neural systems for perception and action. Given this, the behavioral dissociation that accompanies the Roelofs effect cannot be considered evidence of a dissociation of perception and action. This indicates a general need to re-evaluate the broad class of evidence purported to support this hypothesized dissociation.  相似文献

This study examined the consistency of the effect of wave exposure on the morphology of Ecklonia radiata, a small kelp, across a broad geographic range (>1100 km). Fifteen morphological characters were measured on individuals from sites of low (2.5 ± 0.8 S.E.) and high (12.2 ± 2.0 S.E.) wave exposure (Baardseth's index) within six locations in southwestern Australia. With the exception of lateral width (P = 0.0001), none of the morphological characters were consistently statistically different (P > 0.06) between high and low wave exposure and correlations with wave exposure were generally weak (r < 0.60). While 12 of the 15 characters were statistically different (P < 0.008) between sites of different exposure within at least one location, the direction of difference (significant or not) was opposite between some locations for all but one character (lateral width). ANOSIM was not able to separate thalli from high and low exposure when all locations were pooled (Clarke's R = 0.127), but within each location most sites showed better separation (0.126 < Clarke's R < 0.829). Despite the lack of statistical differences, trends suggested that E. radiata responds to exposure by having drag-reducing (small size, narrow laterals and blades, low spinosity) and strength-increasing (relatively large holdfast, thick stipe and thick blades and lamina) morphological traits, as observed for several other kelps in small-scale studies. We conclude that while wave exposure does have an effect on kelp morphology, the effect is not independent of other location-specific processes.  相似文献

Traumatic exposures can affect beliefs and behaviors related to the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), a persistent public health problem. I leverage a natural experiment created by variation in US military deployment location assignments to estimate how combat exposure changes a surviving deployed male veteran’s probability of acquiring a sexually transmitted disease. I analyze longitudinal data from 1994 to 2008 on 485 deployed veterans with information theoretic methods to reduce the sensitivity of estimates to small samples, an infrequently observed outcome, and highly correlated covariates. For veterans assigned to a combat zone, I estimate combat exposure results in a 5.4 percentage point increase in the probability of acquiring an STD. Additional estimations provide evidence suggesting risky behaviors involving substance use or multiple sexual partners may serve as pathways from combat exposure to STDs. My results are relevant to discussions regarding STD screening and care needs for trauma exposed individuals.  相似文献

There is some evidence from grating experiments that the transient presentation of a stimulus pattern interferes with the encoding of positional relationships between pattern elements (i.e. the analysis of spatial structure) more in eccentric vision than in central vision. The present study investigated the effect of exposure duration on the analysis of spatial structure in eccentric vision using a task in which the observer discriminated between two mirror symmetric patterns consisting of short line segments. In each trial, the two patterns were flashed for 140 or 500 ms, and the observer had to decide whether the patterns were identical or mirror symmetric. Both constant-size and size-scaled patterns were used in eccentric vision. The longer exposure duration slightly increased the proportion of correct responses in eccentric vision but performance remained distinctly inferior to that in central vision.  相似文献

ThioTEPA was injected intraperitoneally into female 101/H and CBA mice on day 12 of pregnancy at a dose of 2.5 mg/kg body weight. As a result, the number of prospermatogonia in 19-day-old male fetuses decreased to 78.8% in 101/H mice and to 63.7% in CBA mice. The gametotoxic effect on the male offspring (F1) in 101/H mice treated with thioTEPH included the significant decrease in the number of spermatogonia A, spermatocytes I at preleptotene and pachytene, as well as of spermatids at the stage 7 of development. Interstrain differences are described in the intensity of spermatogenesis in the mature intact animals and in regeneration capacity of gonads after prenatal thioTEPA administration.  相似文献

The effect of heat exposure on blood chemistry of the hyperthermic rabbit   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
1. Two hours of exposure to heat stress, resulted in hyperthermia in rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). 2. This was accompanied by a severe hypocapnia, partly compensated for by a significant decrease in bicarbonate (HCO3-) concentration. 3. The severest hyperthermia (Tb = 43.5 degrees) was followed by a sharp decreased in both PaCO2 (to 20.2 torr) and HCO3- (to 9.2 mM/l), resulting in extreme metabolic acidosis (pH = 7.290). 4. The significant increase in serum osmolality (27%) is interpreted by the cumulative effect of increased electrolyte and metabolite concentrations. 5. The elevation in blood BUN, creatinine, globulin and GOT levels point to a possible damage to muscle cells by hypothermia. 6. The stable cholesterol and alkaline phosphatase levels, suggest that liver tissue was not damaged. 7. The dramatic increase in glucose from 103.8 to 348.8 mg%, and the significant increase (from 22.0 to 39.9 mg%) in BUN, suggest a possible disability of the cells to metabolize carbohydrates, accompanied by a progressive proteolysis as an alternative process for energy production. 8. The data suggest that the emergence of muscle cell damage, severe hyperglycemia and acidosis under heat stress, precedes and amplifies the deteriorating effects of high Tb in heat stressed rabbits, which often lead to mortality.  相似文献

In an attempt to determine whether electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure might lead to DNA damage, we exposed SnCl2-treated pBR322 plasmids to EMF and analysed the resulting conformational changes using agarose gel electrophoresis. An EMF-dependent potentiation of DNA scission (i.e. the appearance of relaxed plasmids) was observed. In confirmation of this, plasmids pre-exposed to EMF also were less capable of transforming Escherichia coli. The results indicate that EMF, in the presence of a transition metal, is capable of causing DNA damage. These observations support the idea that EMF, probably through secondary generation of reactive oxygen species, can be clastogenic and provide a possible explanation for the observed correlation between EMF exposure and the frequency of certain types of cancers in humans.  相似文献

The Lac system of genes has been an important model system in understanding gene regulation. When the dimer lac repressor protein binds to the correct DNA sequence, the hinge region of the protein goes through a disorder to order transition. The hinge region is disordered when binding to nonoperator sequences. This region of the protein must pay a conformational entropic penalty to order when it is bound to operator DNA. Structural studies show that this region is flexible. Previous simulations showed that this region is disordered when free in solution without the DNA binding domain present. Our simulations corroborate that this region is extremely flexible in solution, but we find that the presence of the DNA binding domain proximal to the hinge helix and salt make the ordered conformation more favorable even without DNA present.  相似文献

Effects of light-exposure on eggs of the Atlantic halibut ( Hippoglossus hippoglossus ) were investigated. Egg buoyancy, yolk sac osmolality and perivitelline space (PVS) in light and dark-exposed eggs were followed during 3–12 days after fertilization. In light-exposed eggs, the density increased to a maximum at day 6 while the density in dark exposed eggs significantly decreased between day 4 and 10. There was no significant difference between treatments at day 12. The pattern of yolk osmolality reflected these changes in density. Embryonic volume, calculated from estimates of total volume and PVS, was found to decrease rapidly at days 3–4 after fertilization in the light exposed group, whereas the control group during the same period showed no change. After this period, the embryonic volume showed a parallel decrease in both groups. The increased egg density is caused by both the loss of water from the embryonic compartment and by increased yolk osmolality. These results are discussed in relation to changes in vertical distribution in both natural and culture systems.  相似文献

Cadmium has been associated with a number of adverse health effects but the impact of those effects on the pharmacokinetics of different drugs has not been investigated. Therefore, the pharmacokinetics of theophylline and ciprofloxacin were studied in cadmium-exposed and control rats (72 rats) following i.p. (6.5mg/kg) and p.o. (10mg/kg) administration, respectively. The third-generation offsprings of rats exposed to 100 microg/mL of cadmium chloride in drinking water were used in this study. Following 8 weeks of exposure, animals received the drugs as a single dose. Blood samples were withdrawn at different time-points and the plasma concentrations of both drugs were analyzed by HPLC. The pharmacokinetic parameters of theophylline and ciprofloxacin were altered significantly in the cadmium-exposed animals. For theophylline, a statistically significant increase (p<0.0001) in C(max) (69%) and AUC(0-)(infinity) (68%) of theophylline in the cadmium-exposed rats as compared to the control were observed. A corresponding significant (p<0.0001) reduction of 41% in clearance (CL/F) of theophylline was detected in the exposed group. Neither the half-life nor the mean residence time (MRT) showed any significant change due to the exposure to cadmium. For ciprofloxacin, no significant difference was seen in the C(max) of the exposed group as compared to the control animals. However, a delay in T(max) was observed in the exposed group (from 0.16(+/-0.003) to 0.37(+/-0.14)h). A small, but significant increase in t(1/2) (p<0.05) was detected (1.74(+/-0.25) vs. 1.45(+/-0.12)h). A significant reduction (p<0.05) of CL/F from 30.54(+/-1.9) to 24.01(+/-3.81)mL/min/kg was seen in the treated group. The current investigation showed that chronic exposure to cadmium could have a very significant impact on altering the pharmacokinetic parameters of various drugs. Therefore, in cadmium-polluted areas, dose adjustments and drug monitoring, especially for drugs with a narrow therapeutic window, should be carried out.  相似文献

A reproducible partial-thickness burn was inflicted on 100 albino guinea pigs. With the blister intact, the evaporative water loss from the burn surface was essentially the same as from normal unburned skin. When the blister was removed, the rate of water loss was initially more than 100 times normal, and it remained 20 to 50 times the normal rate throughout the first week. This high rate of water loss was associated with an increasing depth of wound destruction (from dehydration) and a thickening of the overlying crust. Microscopic examination showed that previously viable dermis was incorporated in this crust. The depth of dermal loss was negligible when the blister was left intact, and improved healing resulted. We believe it is important to leave burn blisters intact, whenever possible.  相似文献

The long-term effect of hypoxia is to decrease both the production and use of ATP and thus decrease the reliance on mitochondrial oxidative energy production. Yet, recent studies include more immediate affects of hypoxia on gene expression and these data suggest the maintenance of mitochondrial function. To better understand the short-term physiological response to hypoxia, we quantified metabolic mRNA expression in the heart ventricles and livers of the teleost fish Fundulus grandis exposed to partial oxygen pressure of 2.8?kPa (-13.5% air saturation).Twenty-eight individuals from a single population were exposed to hypoxia for 0, 4, 8, 12, 24, 48, and 96 hr. Liver and cardiac tissues were sampled from the same individuals at 0-48 hr. At 96 hr, only cardiac tissue was assayed. Gene expression was significantly different (ANOVA, P < 0.05) for 17 of 226 metabolic genes (7.5%) in cardiac tissue and for 20 of 256 (7.8%) metabolic genes in hepatic tissue. For the two tissues examined in this study, the maximum response occurred at different times. For cardiac tissue, using Dunnett's post hoc test, most of these significant differences occurred at 96 hr of exposure. For liver, all but one significant difference occurred at 4 hr. Surprisingly, too many (relative to random expectations) of the genes with significant increase in mRNA are involved in the oxidative phosphorylation pathway: 44% of the significant genes at 96 hr in the heart and 33% of the significant genes at 4 hr in the liver are involved in the oxidative phosphorylation pathway. These data indicate that there are tissue-specific differences in the timing of the response to hypoxia, yet both cardiac and hepatic tissues have increases in mRNA that code for enzyme in the oxidative phosphorylation pathway. If these changes in mRNA produce a similar change in protein, then these data suggest that the initial response to hypoxia involves an increase in the oxidative pathway potentially as a mechanism to maintain ATP production.  相似文献

Overexposure to manganese (Mn) is associated with neurological disorders in children. Evidence indicated that N‐methyl‐d ‐aspartate (NMDA) receptor signaling pathway was critical for neurobehavioral function. However, whether NMDA receptor signaling pathway contributes to Mn‐induced neurotoxicity remains unknown. In this study, newborn Sprague–Dawley rats were randomly assigned to four groups exposed to 0, 10, 20, and 30 mg/kg of Mn2+ by intraperitoneal injection (n = 10/group: five males and five females). After 3 weeks of Mn exposure, messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein expression of NMDA receptor subunits (NR1, NR2A, and NR2B), cAMP‐response element binding protein (CREB), and brain‐derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in hippocampus were measured by real‐time quantitative RT‐PCR and Western blot. In Mn‐exposed rats, decreased mRNA and protein expression of NR1, NR2A, and NR2B, CREB, and BDNF was observed. The results imply that downregulated NMDA receptor signaling pathway may be of vital importance in the neuropathological process of Mn‐induced neurotoxicity.  相似文献

Vision and haptics have different limitations and advantages because they obtain information by different methods. If the brain combined information from the two senses optimally, it would rely more on the one providing more precise information for the current task. In this study, human observers judged the distance between two parallel surfaces in two within-modality experiments (vision-alone and haptics-alone) and in an intermodality experiment (vision and haptics together). In the within-modality experiments, the precision of visual estimates varied with surface orientation, as expected from geometric considerations; the precision of haptic estimates did not. An ideal observer that combines visual and haptic information weights them differently as a function of orientation. In the intermodality experiment, humans adjusted visual and haptic weights in a fashion quite similar to that of the ideal observer. As a result, combined size estimates are finer than is possible with either vision or haptics alone; indeed, they approach statistical optimality.  相似文献
