The anatomy and ultrastructure of nephrons were studied in various euryhaline and freshwater sturgeons. Microdissection failed to reveal marked differences in the nephron structure between freshwater and euryhaline fishes which might be considered as specific adaptations to the salinity of the environment. Some adaptive changes in the nephron structure were revealed by electron microscopic examination. The glomerular basal membrane is thicker in euryhaline sturgeons than in the freshwater sterlet. The processes of mesangial cells penetrating the basal membrane are much more numerous in fishes caught in the sea than in those from fresh water. Euryhaline sturgeons exhibit a great variability in the ultrastructure of epithelial cells of proximal and distal tubules. The number of mitochondria-rich cells possessing well-developed basolateral foldings is significantly higher in fishes caught in the sea. In the freshwater sterlet the ultrastructure of the epithelium of proximal and distal tubules resembles that in freshwater teleosts.
Comparison was made of the kidney morphology and ultrastructure in sturgeons, elasmo branchs and bony fishes. It is speculated that in sturgeons the adaptation to varying salinity is achieved by changes in the ultrastructure of glomeruli and differentiation of the cells of the tubular epithelium.  相似文献

It is very interesting that the only extant marine amphibian is the marine frog, Fejervarya cancrivora. This study investigated the reasons for this apparent rarity by conducting a phylogenetic tree analysis of the complete mitochondrial genomes from 14 amphibians, 67 freshwater fishes, four migratory fishes, 35 saltwater fishes, and one hemichordate. The results showed that amphibians, living fossil fishes, and the common ancestors of modern fishes are phylogenetically separated. In general, amphibians, living fossil fishes, saltwater fishes, and freshwater fishes are clustered in different clades. This suggests that the ancestor of living amphibians arose from a type of primordial freshwater fish, rather than the coelacanth, lungfish, or modern saltwater fish. Modern freshwater fish and modern saltwater fish were probably separated from a common ancestor by a single event, caused by crustal movement.  相似文献

Numerous studies of population genetics in salmonids and other anadromous fishes have revealed that population structure is generally organized into geographic hierarchies (isolation by distance), but significant structure can exist in proximate populations due to varying selective pressures (isolation by adaptation). In Chignik Lakes, Alaska, anadromous Dolly Varden char (Salvelinus malma) spawn in nearly all accessible streams throughout the watershed, including those draining directly to an estuary, Chignik Lagoon, into larger rivers, and into lakes. Collections of Dolly Varden fry from 13 streams throughout the system revealed low levels of population structure among streams emptying into freshwater. However, much stronger genetic differentiation was detected between streams emptying into freshwater and streams flowing directly into estuarine environments. This fine‐scale reproductive isolation without any physical barriers to migration is likely driven by differences in selection pressures across freshwater and estuarine environments. Estuary tributaries had fewer larger, older juveniles, suggesting an alternative life history of smolting and migration to the marine environment at a much smaller size than occurs in the other populations. Therefore, genetic data were consistent with a scenario where isolation by adaptation occurs between populations of Dolly Varden in the study system, and ecological data suggest that this isolation may partially be a result of a novel Dolly Varden life history of seawater tolerance at a smaller size than previously recognized.  相似文献

Two new nematode species, Orientatractis campechensis n. sp. and Orientatractis chiapasensis n. sp. (Atractidae, Cosmocercoidea), are described from the intestine of cichlid fishes collected in localities of southeastern Mexico and Nicaragua. These atractid nematodes are characterized by the presence of a cephalic end armed with 4 marked, Y-shaped, well-sclerotized pieces, consisting of 2 "horns" extending outward and downward and immediately below a single-horned structure. Both new species differ from the other 2 species of Orientatractis (Orientatractis leiperi and Orientatractis levanhoai) mainly in the body measurements, presence of a vulvar appendix, lengths of spicules and of the gubernaculum, distribution of caudal papillae, and the number of anterior sclerotized structures. Morphological and biometrical variations were evident among specimens from different hosts and localities, with the larger organisms being collected from Vieja bifasciata and Cichlasoma pearsei. Orientatractis campechensis and O. chiapasensis represent the first 2 species of this genus parasitizing freshwater fishes; the other species have been found in amphibians and reptiles.  相似文献

In the beginning of last century an aquarium opened in Brussels where besides fishes also a collection of amphibians and reptiles was shown to the public. A small museum was also included. This aquarium was started with the aim just to show freshwater fishes but shortly after the opening also marine species were part of the collection.Curious inhabitants of Brussels who wanted to get acquainted with the unknown animal world and people who were interested in the scientific aspects of fishes, pisciculture, marine life and freshwater world found what they were looking for in the small aquarium and museum. Shortly after the inauguration it was described as ‘…a useful aquarium not only for the scientist who looks for information about all facets of live in water but also for the average visitors who want to get new impressions and enjoys the silence but also want to learn something. Families and schools as well have the possibility to let children and students learn about animals in a total new way’. A few renowned specialists and hydro biologists gave support but the aquarium had to face different problems and the interest of the public dropped off. A short time before World War II the aquarium was closed.  相似文献

Aim  In light of the current biodiversity crisis, there is a need to identify and protect species at greatest risk of extinction. Ecological theory and global-scale analyses of bird and mammal faunas suggest that small-bodied species are less vulnerable to extinction, yet this hypothesis remains untested for the largest group of vertebrates, fish. Here, we compare body-size distributions of freshwater and marine fishes under different levels of global extinction risk (i.e. listed as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species ) from different major sources of threat (habitat loss/degradation, human harvesting, invasive species and pollution).
Location  Global, freshwater and marine.
Methods  We collated maximum body length data for 22,800 freshwater and marine fishes and compared body-size frequency distributions after controlling for phylogeny.
Results  We found that large-bodied marine fishes are under greater threat of global extinction, whereas both small- and large-bodied freshwater species are more likely to be at risk. Our results support the notion that commercial fishing activities disproportionately threaten large-bodied marine and freshwater species, whereas habitat degradation and loss threaten smaller-bodied marine fishes.
Main conclusions  Our study provides compelling evidence that global fish extinction risk does not universally scale with body size. Given the central role of body size for trophic position and the functioning of food webs, human activities may have strikingly different effects on community organization and food web structure in freshwater and marine systems.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of environments with different average temperatures and different salinities on plasma NEFA in elasmobranchs by comparing species from tropical vs. cold temperate marine waters, and tropical freshwater vs. tropical marine waters. The influence of the environment on plasma NEFA is significant, especially with regard to essential fatty acids (EFA) and the n-3/n-6 ratio. n-3/n-6 ratios in tropical marine elasmobranchs were lower by two-fold or more compared with temperate marine elasmobranchs, because of higher levels of arachidonic acid (AA, 20:4n-6) and docosatetraenoic acid (22:4n-6), and less docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3), in the tropical species. These results are similar to those in earlier studies on lipids in teleosts. n-3/n-6 ratios and levels of EFA were similar between tropical freshwater and tropical marine elasmobranchs. This suggests that the observation in temperate waters that marine fishes have higher levels of n-3 fatty acids and n-3/n-6 ratios than freshwater fishes may not hold true in tropical waters, at least in elasmobranchs. It also suggests that plasma NEFA are little affected by freshwater vs. seawater adaptation in elasmobranchs. Likewise, we found that plasma NEFA composition and levels were not markedly affected by salinity acclimation (2 weeks) in the euryhaline stingray Himantura signifer. However, in contrast to our comparisons of freshwater-adapted vs. marine species, the level of n-3 fatty acids and the n-3/n-6 ratio were observed to significantly decrease, indicating a potential role of n-3 fatty acids in salinity acclimation in H. signifer.  相似文献

Reproduction of external fertilizing vertebrates is typically constrained to either fresh or salt water, not both. For all studied amphibians and fishes, this constraint includes immotile sperm that are activated after ejaculation only by the specific chemistry of the fertilizing medium in which the species evolved (fresh, brackish, or salt water). No amphibians can reproduce in the sea. Although diadromous fishes may migrate between salt and fresh water, they are shackled to their natal environment for spawning in part because of sperm activation. Here, we report for the first time among all documented external fertilizing vertebrates, that in the absence of any external media, sperm are motile at ejaculation in a marine spawning fish (Osmeridae, capelin, Mallotus villosus). To illuminate why, we evaluated sperm behavior at different salinities in M. villosus as well as the related freshwater spawning anadromous rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax). Surprisingly, sperm performance was superior in fresh water for both species. M. villosus spend their entire life at sea but our results show that their sperm are deactivated by sea water, suggesting a freshwater ancestry. By circumventing constraining water chemistry, we interpret the unique pre‐ejaculatory sperm activation in this species as a novel adaptation that enables fertilization in the marine environment. These findings also contribute to understanding the persistence of anadromy, despite great energetic costs to adult fishes.  相似文献

A freshwater population of the threespine stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus occurs at an elevation of 400m in Lake Towada in the mountains of northern Japan. Morphological characteristics of each sex of this population were studied between 1985 and 1992. The 1985 fishes were larger in standard length than even anadromous populations, as well as all other freshwater populations, so the large body size of this population was unusual for the species. The population was also characterized by large ratios of head length, eye diameter, and gill raker length, and a higher ovary volume in 1992 than in 1985, but it was not readily characterized by meristic characters. The population may have been introduced within the last 20 years (probably in the early 1980s). The large body size of the population may not reflect a defense against predators because coexisting fishes were not important predators on threespine stickleback adults. It is supposed that the change of body size was induced by environmental changes in prey abundance in the lake and/or by the longevity of fishes.  相似文献

Restriction-fragment length polymorphisms in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) were used to evaluate population-genetic structure and matriarchal phylogeny in four species of marine fishes that lack a pelagic larval stage: the catfishes Arius felis and Bagre marinus, and the toadfishes Opsanus tau and O. beta. Thirteen informative restriction enzymes were used to assay mtDNAs from 134 specimens collected from Massachusetts to Louisiana. Considerable genotypic diversity was observed in each species. However, major mtDNA phylogenetic assemblages in catfish and toadfish (as identified in Wagner networks and UPGMA phenograms) exhibited contrasting patterns of geographic distribution: in catfish, distinct mtDNA clades were widespread, while such clades in toadfish tended to be geographically localized. By both the criteria of species' ranges and the geographic pattern of intraspecific mtDNA phylogeny, populations of marine catfish in the western Atlantic have had greater historical interconnectedness than have toadfish. Results are also compared to previously published mtDNA data in freshwater and other marine fishes. Although mtDNA differentiation among conspecific populations of continuously distributed marine fishes is usually lower than that among discontinuously distributed freshwater species inhabiting separate drainages, it is apparent that historical biogeographic factors can importantly influence genetic structure in marine as well as freshwater species.  相似文献

Freshwater eels of the Anguillidae are diadromous because they migrate between ocean and freshwater environments, but other anguilliform fishes are generally considered to be strictly marine species. A few marine eels of the Muraenidae and Ophichthidae have occasionally been found in freshwater or estuaries, indicating that anguillids are not the only anguilliform eels that can use freshwater in some parts of the world. The moray eel Gymnothorax polyuranodon is one species that is known to be present in freshwater in the Indo-Pacific, but its life history is unknown. One way to evaluate what types of habitats are used by fishes is to determine the ratio of strontium (Sr) to calcium (Ca) in their otoliths, because this can show if they have used freshwater or saltwater environments. To evaluate the patterns of freshwater use by this unusual species of marine eel, the otolith Sr/Ca ratios of four G. polyuranodon (275–344 mm) caught in a freshwater stream of Fiji were analyzed. The consistently low Sr/Ca values (0–4) indicated upstream movement after settlement and freshwater or estuarine residence of all four individuals. These eels did not appear to have entered freshwater just for a short time period, which is consistent with other reports that this species is present in estuarine and freshwater habitats. This suggests that G. polyuranodon may be a catadromous species of marine eel. The similarities and differences between the life histories of anguillid eels and the few marine eels that have evolved the ability to invade freshwater habitats is discussed in relation to the evolutionary origin of diadromy in anguilliform fishes that originated in the marine environment.  相似文献

Studies have been made on the activity of cation- and anion-stimulated ATPases, as well as succinic dehydrogenase in homogenates and subcellular fractions from osmoregulatory organs of marine (elasmobranch and teleost) and freshwater (teleost) fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. The activity of Na+, K+-ATPase was found to be rather similar in almost all osmoregulatory organs of the species investigated. The highest level of Cl-stimulated ATPase was found in microsomal fraction of the kidneys from birds and mammals. Succinic dehydrogenase activity is significantly higher in the renal tissue of mammals, both in total homogenates and in mitochondrial fraction.  相似文献

Comparisons across multiple taxa can often clarify the histories of biogeographic regions. In particular, historic barriers to movement should have affected multiple species and, thus, result in a pattern of concordant intraspecific genetic divisions among species. A striking example of such comparative phylogeography is the recent observation that populations of many small mammals and reptiles living on the Baja California peninsula have a large genetic break between northern and southern peninsular populations. In the present study, I demonstrate that five species of near-shore fishes living on the Baja coastline of the Gulf of California share this genetic pattern. The simplest explanation for this concordant genetic division within both terrestrial and marine vertebrates is that the Baja Peninsula was fragmented by a Plio-Pleistocene marine seaway and that this seaway posed a substantial barrier to movement for near-shore fishes. For some fish species, the signal of this vicariance in mtDNA has been eroded by gene flow and is not evident with classic, equilibrium measures of population structure. Yet, significant divisions are apparent in coalescent analyses that jointly estimate divergence with gene flow. The genetic divisions within Gulf of California fishes also coincide with recognized biogeographic regions based on fish community composition and several environmental factors. It is likely that adaptation to regional environments and present-day oceanographic circulation limit gene exchange between biogeographic regions and help maintain evidence of past vicariance.  相似文献

The Holocene evolution of eight South African coastal lakes and lagoons is examined and related to changes in fish composition over that period. Historical and current connectivity with riverine and marine environments are the primary determinants of present‐day fish assemblages in these systems. A small and remarkably consistent group of relict estuarine species have persisted in these coastal lakes and lagoons. The loss or reduction of connectivity with the sea has impacted on the diversity of marine fishes in all eight study systems, with no marine fishes occurring in those water bodies where connectivity has been completely broken (e.g. Sibaya, Groenvlei). In systems that have retained tenuous linkages with the sea (e.g., Verlorenvlei, Wilderness lakes), elements of the marine fish assemblage have persisted, especially the presence of facultative catadromous species. Freshwater fish diversity in coastal lakes and lagoons is a function of historical and present biogeography and salinity. From a freshwater biogeography perspective, the inflowing rivers of the four temperate systems reviewed here contain three or fewer native freshwater fishes, while the subtropical lakes that are fed by river systems contain up to 40 freshwater fish species. Thus, the significantly higher fish species diversity in subtropical versus temperate coastal lakes and lagoons comes as no surprise. Fish species diversity has been increased further in some systems (e.g., Groenvlei) by alien fish introductions. However, the impacts of fish introductions and translocations have not been studied in the coastal lakes and lagoons of South Africa. In these closed systems, it is probable that predation impacts on small estuarine fishes are significant. The recent alien fish introductions is an example of the growing threats to these systems during the Anthropocene, a period when human activities have had significant negative impacts and show potential to match the changes recorded during the entire Holocene.  相似文献

Genome size and extinction risk in vertebrates   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The hypothesis of 'selfish DNA' is tested for the case of animals using the relation between genome size and conservation status of a given species. In contrast to plants, where the larger genome was previously shown to increase the likelihood of extinction, the picture is more complicated in animals. At the within-families and within-orders levels, the larger genome increases the risk of extinction only in reptiles and birds (which have the smallest genomes among tetrapods). In fishes and amphibians, the effect is caused by the higher taxonomic levels (above order). In several phylogenetic lineages of anamniotes, there is a correlation between a higher fraction of threatened species and a lower number of extant species in a lineage with the larger genome. In mammals, no effect was observed at any taxonomic level. The obtained data support the concept of hierarchical selection. It is also shown that, in plants and reptiles, the probability of being threatened increases from less than 10% to more than 80% with the increase in genome size, which can help in establishing conservation priorities.  相似文献

Madagascar has become a model region for testing hypotheses of species diversification and biogeography, and many studies have focused on its diverse and highly endemic herpetofauna. Here we combine species distribution models of a near-complete set of species of reptiles and amphibians known from the island with body size data and a tabulation of herpetofaunal communities from field surveys, compiled up to 2008. Though taxonomic revisions and novel distributional records arose since compilation, we are confident that the data are appropriate for inferring and comparing biogeographic patterns among these groups of organisms. We observed species richness of both amphibians and reptiles was highest in the humid rainforest biome of eastern Madagascar, but reptiles also show areas of high richness in the dry and subarid western biomes. In several amphibian subclades, especially within the Mantellidae, species richness peaks in the central eastern geographic regions while in reptiles different subclades differ distinctly in their richness centers. A high proportion of clades and subclades of both amphibians and reptiles have a peak of local endemism in the topographically and bioclimatically diverse northern geographic regions. This northern area is roughly delimited by a diagonal spanning from 15.5°S on the east coast to ca. 15.0°S on the west coast. Amphibian diversity is highest at altitudes between 800–1200 m above sea-level whereas reptiles have their highest richness at low elevations, probably reflecting the comparatively large number of species specialized to the extended low-elevation areas in the dry and subarid biomes. We found that the range sizes of both amphibians and reptiles strongly correlated with body size, and differences between the two groups are explained by the larger body sizes of reptiles. However, snakes have larger range sizes than lizards which cannot be readily explained by their larger body sizes alone. Range filling, i.e., the amount of suitable habitat occupied by a species, is less expressed in amphibians than in reptiles, possibly reflecting their lower dispersal capacity. Taxonomic composition of communities assessed by field surveys is largely explained by bioclimatic regions, with communities from the dry and especially subarid biomes distinctly differing from humid and subhumid biomes.  相似文献

Giant water bugs (Hemiptera: Belostomatidae) are key predators in freshwater ecosystems and have been reported to feed on several species of vertebrates, including fishes, amphibians and reptiles. Here, we report the opportunistic predation of an adult female vesper bat (Afronycteris nana) by a giant water bug (Lethocerus cordofanus) in a temporary pond in a rice paddy in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa. To our best knowledge, this is the first instance of natural predation upon a mammal by a giant water bug to be documented in a scientific report.  相似文献

Galaxias maculatus eggs and larvae obtained from broodfish captured either in an estuarine or a freshwater environment, as well as from cultured broodstock were analysed to compare their lipid and fatty acid profiles. Results showed a lower lipid content in embryos and larvae from estuarine populations than those from fresh water, denoting the influence of environmental conditions. The n-3:n-6 ratio was higher in eggs from estuarine and cultured populations, being in the range of marine fishes, whereas for eggs from freshwater fish was lower and typical of freshwater fishes. The polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), particularly docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3) and eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3), were higher in eggs and larvae of broodstock coming from culture or estuarine environments than in those from fresh water. Moreover, these fatty acids markedly increased after hatching in larvae coming from estuarine populations, suggesting the effect of the environment on fatty acid profiles to physiologically prepare the larvae to adapt to higher salinity conditions. Linoleic acid (18:2n-6) content was higher in fresh water fish and its reduction during embryo and larval development was accompanied by a significant increase of arachidonic acid (20:4n-6), which was not observed in embryos or larvae from broodstock fish from estuary or aquaculture origin. Both environment and diet of broodstock fish affected lipid and fatty acid composition of G. maculatus embryo and larvae as well as their changes during development.  相似文献
