The population dynamics of Ephydra hians Say final instar larvae and pupae were compared over a two year period in rocky littoral habitats of two alkaline saline lakes in the western Great Basin. Relative abundance increased from 1983 to 1984 at Mono Lake (California), during dilution from ca. 90 to 80 g 1-1 TDS (total dissolved solids). In contrast, relative abundance decreased over the same period at Abert Lake (Oregon), accompanied by a dilution of salinity from ca. 30 to 20 g l-1 and a marked increase in the number and abundance of other benthic macroinvertebrate species. These observations are consistent with a hypothesis that proposes biotic interactions limit E. hians abundance at low salinity, and physiological stress limits abundance at high salinity.Oviposition extends from early spring to early fall. Mixed instars present throughout this period indicates multivoltine population dynamics with overlapping generations. The standing stock biomass of final instars increases exponentially in late spring and peaks in late summer or early fall. Pupae increase in proportional representation and abundance from a spring minimum to a fall maximum. The body size of adults and pupae cycle seasonally from a spring maximum to a fall minimum, and may be related to either or both food limitation, or water temperature. 相似文献

The population of Ephydra cinerea was studied during three summers when dissolved solids levels were about 130 g/l. All life stages are present year-round, but there is apparently some coordination of the initial pulse of adult emergence in June. There are probably 1–2 generations per year.Eggs are deposited on the water surface; inputs to three locations were similar. Larvae successfully avoid the large benthic area covered by an anaerobic monimolimnion. They tend to immigrate from substrates where they grow relatively poorly, and to remain on substrates where they grow better. Consequently, larval densities are more than ten times higher on reef and shallow water mud substrates than on sand. This marked spatial specialization in the absence of substrate-specific predators or competitors illustrates the power of habitat quality by itself in determining spatial patterns of abundance in a lake.Experiments showed larval growth on the reef was inversely related to density, and the lake as a whole produced relatively larger flies in a year when larval and pupal densities were relatively low. Yearly production by E. cinerea is roughly 50 g/m2, about 88% of which comes from reefs and shallow water mud areas covering only 18% of the bottom area.Past studies indicate that blue-green algae dominate the lake's benthic flora when salt concentrations are high (due to low lake levels), and diatoms take over when salt concentrations are low. Fly abundance appears to be inversely related to salinity. The lake's present high planktonic primary production is equal to that of eutrophic freshwater lakes, yet it has water clarity more characteristic of an oligotrophic lake. The high water clarity (which makes possible the high benthic production) probably depends on the absence of phytoplankters that can both tolerate the high salinity and avoid being eaten by Artemia salina. Continued dilution of the lake will probably upset this situation and result in reorganization of the lake's energy flow pattern. 相似文献

The distribution and abundance of larval, pupal, and adult stages of the alkali fly Ephydra hians Say were examined in relation to location, benthic substrate type, and shoreline features at Mono Lake. Generation time was calculated as a degree-day model for development time at different temperatures, and compared to the thermal environment of the lake at different depths.Larvae and pupae have a contagious distribution and occur in greatest abundance in benthic habitats containing tufa (a porous limestone deposit), and in least abundance on sand or sand/mud substrates. Numbers increase with increasing area of tufa present in a sample, but not on other rocky substrates (alluvial gravel/cobble or cemented sand). Standing stock densities are greatest at locations around the lake containing a mixture of tufa deposits, detrital mud sediments, and submerged vegetation. Shoreline adult abundance is also greatest in areas adjacent to tufa. The shore fly (ephydrid) community varies in composition among different shoreline habitats and shows a zonation with distance from shore. The duration of pupation (from pupa formation to adult eclosion) becomes shorter as temperature increases. The temperature dependence of pupa development time is not linear and results in prolonged time requirements to complete development at temperatures below 20 °C. About 700 to 1000 degree-days are required to complete a generation. Degree-days of time available in nature declines by 10 to 50% at depths of 5 and 10 metres relative to surface waters (depending on the extent of mixing), resulting in fewer possible generations. Essentially no growth would be expected at 15 m, where temperature seldom exceeds the developmental minimum. It is concluded that reduced substrate availability and low temperatures may limit productivity of the alkali fly at increasing depths in Mono Lake. 相似文献

Aphidophagous syrphid (Diptera : Syrphidae) larvae have no structures for seizing and killing such as prehensile legs and strongly sclerotized external mouthparts enabling them to capture and feed on their prey. Nevertheless they are considered to be efficient predators. In order to understand this paradox in Episyrphus balteatus, 2 complementary approaches were followed. These consisted of, first, a careful analysis of the morphology of mouthparts of the larvae, and second, an investigation of their feeding behaviour. The mouthparts were found to be composed of 2 groups of dental sclerites, corresponding to the 2 inner elements of the cephalopharyngeal skeleton. The exterior elements or triangular sclerites are absent in the first-instar larvae. These elements appeared close to the mouth in the second and the third-instar larvae, were oriented in the opposite direction to the other elements, and were positioned laterally. This structure probably serves to anchor the anterior part of the predator within the prey, thus preventing it from escaping. During the feeding activity, the seizing process occurred immediately after the recognition. The lifting-up behaviour of the first-instar larvae is probably due to the absence of the triangular sclerites. The suction was marked by an active movement of the cephalopharyngeal skeleton and a peristaltic movement of the abdomen. The feeding time was inversely proportional to the larval development. 相似文献

Karyotype and morphology of Chironomus sp. larvae from the Caspian Sea have been described. 2n = 8. Chromosomal arm combination is AB, CD, EF, G (cytocomplex thummi). All chromosomes display conjugation of homologues. Centromere areas are of s-type. The nucleolar organizer and two Balbiani rings are disposed in arm C, and another Balbiani ring is in arm B. Half larvae have heterozygotic paracentric inversions in arm D. The larva belongs to salinarius form. One scleritis is colorless, an occipital scleritis is light and irregularly colored. Premandible has 4-5 cogs. Epipharingeal ridge has 18-23 dens. This new species is close to salinarius group, especially to Ch. albidus Konst., but differs from it at the larva stage in the structure of non-massive basal antenna segment, in the presence of large quantity of premandible denses, in light color of occipital scleritis, and in a series of morphometric rates. A similarity berween Ch. paraalbidus and Ch. albidus, on the one hand, and Boeotendipes, on the other one, has been found out. 相似文献

Previous investigations of the laboratory biology and host range ofHydrellia pakistanae,a biological control ofHydrilla verticillata(hydrilla), used the dioecious hydrilla biotype common to Florida, Texas, and California. A monoecious biotype that is now spreading throughout the mid-Atlantic states, California, and Washington was not investigated during these original studies. We therefore compared the dioecious and monoecious hydrilla biotypes as hosts forH. pakistanae.FemaleH. pakistanaeaccepted the two biotypes equally as ovipositional substrates. Overall developmental success differed little: 42% of eggs oviposited on monoecious hydrilla produced adults compared to 39% of eggs oviposited on dioecious hydrilla. Fly development required about 33 days on both biotypes (at 22 ± 2°C), but larvae that completed development mined 1.6 times as many leaves on monoecious hydrilla as on dioecious plants. These data suggest thatH. pakistanaewould be a useful biocontrol agent of monoecious hydrilla, should this plant invade areas where it can grow as a perennial. 相似文献

In the present study, some morphological structures of antennae, maxillary palps and caudal setae of fourth instar larvae of laboratory-reared phlebotomine sand flies (Lutzomyia longipalpis, L. migonei, L. evandroi, L. lenti, L. sericea, L. whitmani and L. intermedia) of the State of Ceará, Brazil, were examined under scanning electron microscopy. The antennal structures exhibited considerable variation in the morphology and position. A prominent digitiform distal segment has been observed only on the antenna of species of the subgenus Nyssomyia. The taxonomic relevance of this and other antennal structure is discussed. The papiliform structures found in the maxillae and the porous structures of the caudal setae of all species examined may have chemosensory function. Further studies with transmission electron microscopy are needed to better understand the physiological function of these external structures. 相似文献

Food preferences of tanypodinae larvae (Diptera: Chironomidae) 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Analyses of the gut contents of larvae of three species of Tanypodinae, collected from four sites in north-east England and Scotland, invariably showed small particles (1–10 µm2), predominantly of detritus, to be more abundant than large particles (10–100 µm2), mostly algae and diatoms. No animal remains, such as carapaces, head capsules and chaetae, or vascular plant fragments were found in any of the intestines. In contrast, food-choice and growth experiments suggested that animal food (particularly Tubificidae and Chironominae larvae) was important in the tanypod diet. In the food-choice experiments, six different foods offered to small (4–7 mm long) and to large (8–12 mm long) larvae of Procladius choreus Meigen, were chosen in the following order: live Tubificidae spp.; detritus; live Chironominae larvae; a mixture of algae and diatoms; live Ostracoda spp.; and live Cladocera spp. However, when the results of the individual choices were examined, it was clear that the small larvae had consumed greater amounts of the small types of food (i.e. detritus, algae and diatoms) in comparison to the large larvae. In the growth experiment, those larvae of P. choreus reared solely on Tubificidae, detritus or Chironominae larvae thrived, while those fed on algae and diatoms, ostracods or cladocerans grew more slowly and fewer survived the experimental period. It was concluded that although Tanypodinae larvae are primarily predators with definite food preferences in ideal foraging conditions, in adverse conditions they will utilize a range of available stand-by foods, the most important of which appears to be detritus. 相似文献

This study investigated the effect of azadirachtin A (AZA) on the ultrastructure of the endocrine glands (the prothoracic gland, the corpus allatum, and the corpus cardiacum) responsible for controlling moulting and ecdysis in Lucilia cuprina larvae. All constituent endocrine glands within the ring complex exhibited ultrastructural change after exposure of larvae to AZ A in the diet. The effects on the nucleus were the most noticeable and included: (1) crenulation of nuclear shape, (2) clumping of heterochromatin, and (3) pyknosis. The degenerative changes to the nuclei appeared to precede changes within the cytoplasm. It was concluded that the degeneration of all three endocrine glands within the ring complex would contribute to a generalised disruption of neuroendocrine function. 相似文献

In laboratory experiments, we used fluorescent dye markers to investigate processing of organic matter by larvae of Psectrocladius
limbatellus (Holm.) (Diptera: Chironomidae). 59% of the organic matter used was incorporated into tubes, 39% was present in
faecal pellets (both after 24 h), and 2% was found in the larval gut at the end of experiments. Ingested matter passed through
the gut rapidly, resulting in the gut being emptied more than 20 times each day. Further 24-h experiments using dye-marked
faecal pellets showed that 6% of pellets produced were re-ingested and 12% were incorporated into tubes. There was no preference
for conditioned faecal pellets as food over those that had recently been egested and tubes also provided a food reserve on
which larvae feed. Chironomid larvae recycle organic matter resulting in its mineralization and their ‘engineering’ has a
dramatic effect on the substratum.
