Skates discharge an electrical current too weak to be used for predation or defense, and too infrequent and irregular to be used for electrolocation. Additionally, skates possess a specialized sensory system that can detect electrical stimuli at the same strength at which they discharge their organs. These two factors are suggestive of a communicative role for the electric organ in skates, a role that has been demonstrated in similarly weakly electric teleosts (e.g., mormyrids and gymnotiforms). There is evidence that the sexual and ontogenetic variations in the electric organ discharge (EOD) in these other weakly electric fishes are linked to morphological variations in electric organs and the electrogenerating cells of the organs, the electrocytes. Little work has been done to examine possible sexual and ontogenetic variations in skate EODs or variations in the electrocytes responsible for those discharges. Electric organs and electrocyte morphology of male and female, and mature and immature little skates, Leucoraja erinacea, are characterized here. Female electric organs were bigger than male electric organs. This is suggestive of a sexually dimorphic EOD waveform or amplitude, which might be used as a sex-specific identification signal during courtship. The shapes of electrocytes that make up the organ were found to be significantly different between mature and immature individuals and, in some cases, posterior membrane surface area of the electrocytes increased at the onset of maturity due to the formation of membrane surface invaginations and papillae. This is evidence that the EOD of skates may differ in its waveform or amplitude or frequency between mature and immature skates, and act as a signal for readiness to mate. This study supports a communicative role during courtship for the weak electric organs of little skates, but studies that characterize skate EOD dimorphisms are needed to corroborate this speculation before conclusions can be drawn about the role the electric organ plays in communication during courtship.  相似文献

A total of 62 species, representing 24 of the 28 supraspecific taxa of skates, was surveyed for the presence, distribution, and structure of alar and malar thorns. The survey revealed that alar thorns are almost universally present in mature male skates, and that malar thorns are of two types that may have separate origins. The location and orientation of alar thorns differed in two major clades of skates (groups I and II). They were either exposed on the disc with the crown oriented obliquely to the long axis of the base or imbedded in slits in the integument and oriented parallel to the long axis of the base. Group I possessed the former type of thorns and, with several exceptions, group II possessed the latter type. Group I either lacked malar thorns or possessed malar thorns that were most likely derived from generalized placoid scales. Group II possessed, with several exceptions, malar thorns derived from enlarged placoid scales. Within group I the supraspecific taxa Atlantoraja and Rioraja possessed unique alar thorns that were reclined laterally and associated with lateral grooves in the integument. Within group II the supraspecific taxa Anacanthobatis, Cruriraja, Dipturus, Okamejei, Raja, the North Pacific Assemblage, and the Amphi-American Assemblage had a large barb on the distal section of the crown of the alar thorn that suggests that these taxa form a clade. The crown of the alar thorns of the latter five supraspecific taxa was undulatory, thus supporting their monophyletic status. Another assemblage within group II had ridges that ran most of the length of the crown of the alar thorns corroborating their monophyletic status. The survey also suggested that variation of integumentary grooves associated with the alar thorns in Bathyraja, and presence or absence of malar thorns in Psammobatis, may be phylogenetically informative. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Simple sequence repeat markers (SSRs, microsatellites) were characterised for skates (Elasmobranchii: Rajidae) from published expressed sequence tags (ESTs) of Leucoraja erinacea. These were tested in four European species (Raja clavata, Raja montagui, Dipturus batis, and Leucoraja naevus). Thirteen of the fourteen amplified loci were polymorphic in at least one species. Polymorphic loci possessed on average 4.5–5.9 alleles per species, and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.05 to 0.88. Possible null alleles were detected at three loci, while one locus showed significant deviation from Hardy–Weinberg Equilibrium proportions. Three locus-pairs exhibited significant linkage disequilibrium in one or more species. This marker set will be valuable for population genetic analyses of the focal taxa, and may prove useful for studies of other skate species.  相似文献

Aim To investigate distributional patterns and derivation of skates in the Australasian realm. Location Australasia. Methods Genus‐group skate taxa were defined for this region for the first time and new systematic information, as well as bathymetric and geographical data, used to identify distribution patterns. Results The extant skate fauna of Australasia (Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia and adjacent subAntarctic dependencies) is highly diverse and endemic with sixty‐two species from twelve currently recognized, nominal genus‐group taxa. These include the hardnose skate (rajin) groups Anacanthobatis, Amblyraja, Dipturus, Okamejei, Rajella and Leucoraja, and softnose skate (arhynchobatin) genera Arhynchobatis, Bathyraja, Insentiraja, Irolita, Pavoraja and Notoraja. Additional new and currently unrecognized nominal taxa of both specific and supraspecific ranks also occur in the region. The subfamily Arhynchobatinae is particularly speciose in Australasia, and the New Zealand/New Caledonian fauna is dominated by undescribed supraspecific taxa and species. The Australian fauna, although well represented by arhynchobatins, is dominated by Dipturus‐like skates and shows little overlap in species composition with the fauna of New Zealand and New Caledonia. Similarly, these faunas exhibit no overlap with the polar faunas of the Australian subAntarctic dependencies (Heard and Macdonald Islands) to the south. Skates appear to be absent from the Macquarie Ridge at the southern margin of the New Zealand Plateau. Their absence off New Guinea probably reflects inadequate sampling and the subsequent poor knowledge of that region's deepwater fish fauna. Main conclusions Skates appear to have existed in the eastern, Australasian sector of Gondwana before fragmentation in the late Cretaceous. The extant fauna appears to be derived from elements of Gondwanan origin, dispersal from the eastern and western Tethys Sea, and intraregional vicariance speciation.  相似文献

In order to further our understanding of the evolution of electric organs in the Neotropical gymnotiform fish, we studied the ontogeny of the electric organs in eight species. In Eigenmannia virescens, Sternopygus macrurus, and Apteronotus leptorhynchus the earliest electrocytes are located between muscle fibres of the hypaxial muscle (Type A electrocytes). We present arguments that these Type A electrocytes represent the plesiomorphic condition. In S. macrurus, in addition to the electrocytes in the hypaxial muscle, additional electrocytes were found in the epaxial muscle. In A. leptorhynchus a neurogenic organ develops later during ontogeny in the medial part of the hypaxial muscle in addition to the early myogenic organ. In E. virescens the early electrocytes in hypaxial muscle will degenerate later during ontogeny, and this organ will be replaced functionally by electrocytes located in the caudal appendage and below the hypaxial muscle. In Electrophorus electricus, two Gymnotus species, Rhamphichthys sp., and Brachyhypopomus pinnicaudatus the first electrocytes were found below the hypaxial muscle (Type B electrocytes); they are assumed to be the more derived stage. In R. sp., and B. pinnicaudatus the electrocytes of Type B developed directly into the adult organ. In the two Gymnotus ssp. electrocytes were also found in the medial part of the organ in-between muscle fibres of the hypaxial muscle. In E. electricus a germinative zone was observed to separate from the ventral myotome. This zone is generating electrocytes continuously so that, as a consequence, the relative proportion of electric organ to muscle increases greatly. In 45 mm long E. electricus a separation of low voltage orientation pulses and high voltage trains of pulses (shocks) was observed. A first appearance of Hunter’s organ was found in 140 mm specimens of E. electricus. The first discharges of all species studied were head- positive, with the exception of R. sp., which produced a triphasic discharge, its main component, however, being head-positive. The arguments presented indicate that the Type A electrocytes found in E. virescens, S. macrurus, and A. leptorhynchus would represent the plesiomorphic condition. On the basis of the evidence regarding the formation, cytological appearance, and anatomical location, as well as the early electrical recordings, we would hypothesise that during the evolution of gymnotiforms wave type species evolved first, and in a second step pulse type species followed. This view, however, is corroborated by only some phylogenetic hypotheses.  相似文献

Molecular barcoding of skates (Chondrichthyes: Rajidae) from the southern Northeast Atlantic. —Zoologica Scripta, 40, 76–84. Due to their vulnerability to fishing pressure, many species of skate (Rajidae) in the Northeast Atlantic are undergoing declines in abundance. The assessment of stock status and subsequent proposal of management measures are often complicated by high levels of species diversity and endemism, coupled with morphological and ecological conservatism, which makes distinguishing between species difficult. To improve the identification of skates and investigate the phylogenetic position of endemic species the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) was sequenced in 12 species (Dipturus oxyrinchus, Leucoraja naevus, Leucoraja circularis, Neoraja iberica, Raja brachyura, Raja clavata, Raja maderensis, Raja microocellata, Raja miraletus, Raja montagui, Raja undulata, Rostroraja alba) inhabiting the Portuguese waters. Based on sequence divergence R. maderensis and R. clavata only differ by 1% of the 652 bp COI sequence, questioning the recognition of R. maderensis (considered to be endemic to Madeira and the Azores), as a reproductively isolated species. Otherwise, there was clear phylogenetic support for the different genera and all the remaining species, although the genetic divergence was low compared to other chordates. In particular, COI analysis allowed clear identification of the morphologically similar species R. brachyura and R. montagui.  相似文献

We describe patterns of geographic variation in electric signal waveforms among populations of the mormyrid electric fish species Paramormyrops kingsleyae. This analysis includes study of electric organs and electric organ discharge (EOD) signals from 553 specimens collected from 12 localities in Gabon, West-Central Africa from 1998 to 2009. We measured time, slope, and voltage values from nine defined EOD “landmarks” and determined peak spectral frequencies from each waveform; these data were subjected to principal components analysis. The majority of variation in EODs is explained by two factors: the first related to EOD duration, the second related to the magnitude of the weak head-negative pre-potential, P0. Both factors varied clinally across Gabon. EODs are shorter in eastern Gabon and longer in western Gabon. Peak P0 is slightly larger in northern Gabon and smaller in southern Gabon. P0 in the EOD is due to the presence of penetrating-stalked (Pa) electrocytes in the electric organ while absence is due to the presence of non-penetrating stalked electrocytes (NPp). Across Gabon, the majority of P. kingsleyae populations surveyed have only individuals with P0-present EODs and Pa electrocytes. We discovered two geographically distinct populations, isolated from others by barriers to migration, where all individuals have P0-absent EODs with NPp electrocytes. At two sites along a boundary between P0-absent and P0-present populations, P0-absent and P0-present individuals were found in sympatry; specimens collected there had electric organs of intermediate morphology. This pattern of geographic variation in EODs is considered in the context of current phylogenetic work. Multiple independent paedomorphic losses of penetrating stalked electrocytes have occurred within five Paramormyrops species and seven genera of mormyrids. We suggest that this key anatomical feature in EOD signal evolution may be under a simple mechanism of genetic control, and may be easily influenced by selection or drift throughout the evolutionary history of mormyrids.  相似文献

Summary Trichomes of Tremandra R.Br. ex DC., Platytheca Steetz and Tetratheca Sm. (Elaeocarpaceae, former Tremandraceae), together with two outgroup species of Elaeocarpus L., are illustrated using scanning electron microscopy, and their distribution on various plant organs is documented. Various trichomes types were identified that relate taxa: simple hairs, stellate hairs, short glandular trichomes, long glandular trichomes, and three forms of tubercules. Both outgroup and ingroup taxa have simple hairs. Stellate hairs are confirmed as unique to Tremandra. Prominent and sculptured multicelled tubercules, some bearing a stout hair, are characteristic of Platytheca. Smaller multicelled tubercules occur in both Platytheca and Tetratheca, except for the Western Australian taxon Te. filiformis Benth. (possibly plesiomorphic). Unicellular tubercules (papilla) characterise two species of Tetratheca. Short glandular trichomes, usually found on the ovary, also occur in both of these genera but not in all species (possibly secondary losses), while long glandular trichomes, usually on stems and leaves, occur only in some groups of Tetratheca. Within Tetratheca, Western Australian taxa that have five-merous flowers fall into three ‘groups’: seven species (together with one from South Australia) that have short glandular trichomes but no long glandular trichomes; six species that have long glandular trichomes but no short glandular trichomes; and four species that have both trichome types. All other species of Tetratheca have four-merous flowers and form two ‘groups’: 12 eastern species (including one from South Australia) that have both short glandular trichomes and long glandular trichomes; 4 western species and six eastern species that lack short glandular trichomes. On the basis of these characters, a phylogenetic hypothesis for the three genera is presented.  相似文献

Hongeo gen. nov. is proposed following examinations of several individuals, including adult males, of the type species Raja koreana, previously described from a single adult female specimen from the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula. A number of external (including claspers, squamation, and ampullary and lateral line canal systems) and skeletal characters are newly described. The phylogenetic position of R. koreana among 26 nominal rajid supraspecific taxa plus 2 unnamed supraspecific taxa of Rajidae and 3 outgroups was estimated. According to a strict consensus tree of 20 equally parsimonious trees of 139 steps (CI = 0.626; RI = 0.850; RC = 0.532; HI = 0.374), Hongeo gen. nov. is defined by the two derived character states: rostral cartilage continuous with neurocranium and stout proximally, but very slender and uncalcified distally; and anterior fontanelle broad, extending forward onto the basal part of rostral cartilage slightly beyond the leading edge of nasal capsules. The new genus also differs from all other supraspecific taxa of Rajidae in the following combination of characters: dorsal surface of tail with a row of distinct thorns along midline in both sexes; most thorns directed anteriorly; a pair of longitudinally elongated black blotches having undulated contours on middle of dorsal surface of disc; three groups of outer buccal ampullae and tubules; three groups of nasal ampullae and tubules; hyoidean ampullae and tubules on ventral surface posteriorly extending past cloaca; rostral shaft narrow with filamentous cartilage at base; scapulocoracoid comparatively short and high with dorsoventrally elliptical anterior fenestra and expanded postventral fenestra; external margin of mesopterygium of pectoral fin slightly undulated, not sinuous, and not fused with pectoral radials; and clasper component eperon and pent present.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships among rhacophorid frogs are under dispute. We use partial sequences of three mitochondrial (12S rRNA, 16S rRNA, and cytochrome b) and three nuclear protein-coding (Rag-1, rhodopsin exon 1, and tyrosinase exon 1) genes from 57 ingroup taxa and eight outgroup taxa to propose a hypothesis for phylogenetic relationships within Rhacophoridae. Our results support recognition of the genus Feihyla, and Chiromantis is the sister taxon to the clade formed by Feihyla, Polypedates and Rhacophorus. We place Aquixalus odontotarsus within Kurixalus, and the remaining species of Aquixalus and Philautus jinxiuensis into the genus Gracixalus. We give Philautus (Kirtixalus) the rank of genus and place Philautus menglaensis within it. The division of species groups among Chinese Rhacophorus needs revision, and a cryptic species is revealed within Rhacophorus nigropunctatus. Rhacophorus pingbianensis is considered a synonym of Rhacophorus omeimontis. The validity of Rhacophorus hui is confirmed by present molecular evidence.  相似文献

An hypothesis of phylogenetic relationships of Asilidae and its constituent taxa is presented, combining morphological and DNA sequence data in a total evidence framework. It is based on 77 robber fly species, 11 Asiloidea outgroup species, 211 morphological characters of the adult fly, and approximately 7300 bp of nuclear DNA from five genes (18S and 28S rDNA, AATS, CAD, and EF-1α protein-encoding DNA). The equally weighted, simultaneous parsimony analysis under dynamic homology in POY resulted in a single most parsimonious cladogram with a cost of 27,582 (iterative pass optimization; 27,703 under regular direct optimization). Six of the 12 included subfamily taxa are recovered as monophyletic. Trigonomiminae, previously always considered as monophyletic based on morphology, is shown to be non-monophyletic. Two of the three Trigonomiminae genera, Holcocephala Jaennicke, 1867 and Rhipidocephala Hermann, 1926, group unexpectedly as the sister taxon to all other Asilidae. Laphriinae, previously seen in the latter position, is the sister group of the remaining Asilidae. Five other subfamily taxa, i.e. Brachyrhopalinae, Dasypogoninae, Stenopogoninae, Tillobromatinae, and Willistonininae, are also shown to be non-monophyletic. The phylogenetic relationships among the higher-level taxa are partly at odds with findings of a recently published morphological study based on more extensive taxon sampling. The total evidence hypothesis is considered as the most informative one, but the respective topologies from the total-evidence, morphology-only, and molecular-only analyses are compared and contrasted in order to discuss the signals from morphological versus molecular data, and to analyze whether the molecular data outcompete the fewer morphological characters. A clade Apioceridae+Mydidae is corroborated as the sister taxon to Asilidae.  相似文献

Mature male and female little skates Leucoraja erinacea were injected with oxytetracycline and maintained in captivity for 13 months to assess centrum growth and the frequency of band-pair deposition. Sixty per cent of the individuals analysed did not deposit a full band pair over the 13 month period. Thus, a majority of captive skates did not exhibit annual band-pair deposition. Previous research confirms annual band-pair deposition in all juvenile and most adult L. erinacea, therefore sexual maturation may lead to decreased frequency of band-pair formation. Age underestimation of larger, older elasmobranchs is being identified in an increasing number of elasmobranch species including L. erinacea as demonstrated in this study. The effect of age underestimation from band-pair counts on studies that use age-based characteristics needs to be addressed.  相似文献

Evolutionary relationships within Astragalus L. (Fabaceae) were inferred from nucleotide sequence variation in nuclear ribosomal DNA of both New World and Old World species. The internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS) of 18S–26S nuclear ribosomal DNA from representatives of 26 species of Astragalus, three species of Oxytropis DC., and two outgroup taxa were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction amplification and direct DNA sequencing. The length of the ITS 1 region within these taxa varied from 221 to 231 bp, while ITS 2 varied in length from 207 to 217 bp. Of the aligned, unambiguous positions, approximately 34% were variable in each spacer region. In pairwise comparisons among Astragalus species and outgroup taxa, sequence divergence at these sites ranged from 0 to 18.8% in ITS 1 and from 0 to 21.7% in ITS 2. Parsimony analyses of these sequences resulted in a well-resolved phylogeny that is highly concordant with previous cytogenetic and chloroplast DNA evidence for a major phylogenetic division in the genus. These data suggest that the New World aneuploid species of Astragalus form a monophyletic but morphologically cryptic group derived from euploid species of Old World (Eurasian) origin, which are consequently paraphyletic.  相似文献

A phylogenetic analysis was performed to determine the monophyly of non‐monotypic genera of the terebelliform family Polycirridae, i.e. Polycirrus, Amaeana, Lysilla, and Hauchiella, and the evolution of characters among members of this clade. The monotypic genera, Enoplobranchus and Biremis, were also included, together with members of both known species in Hauchiella. Representative species were included for remaining genera: 14 species of Polycirrus, six species of Amaeana, and six species of Lysilla. Out‐groups consisted of representatives of Spionidae, Cirratulidae, and Sabellariidae, as well as several species of Telothelepodidae. A total of 40 in‐ and out‐group species were coded for 50 subjects (‘characters’) and 117 subject–predicate relationships (‘states’). Although results are consistent with recent phylogenetic studies within Terebelliformia that suggest Polycirridae monophyly, only Hauchiella was found to be monophyletic, albeit part of the more inclusive clade comprising remaining polycirrid genera. Evolutionary transformation series are discussed for selected characters in relation to the non‐monophyly of Polycirrus, Lysilla, and Amaeana. Implications for the use of supraspecific taxa as ‘taxonomic surrogates’ are highlighted. The definition of Polycirridae is emended. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

Abstract Dictyoptera, comprising Blattaria, Isoptera, and Mantodea, are diverse in appearance and life history, and are strongly supported as monophyletic. We downloaded COII, 16S, 18S, and 28S sequences of 39 dictyopteran species from GenBank. Ribosomal RNA sequences were aligned manually with reference to secondary structure. We included morphological data (maximum of 175 characters) for 12 of these taxa and for an additional 15 dictyopteran taxa (for which we had only morphological data). We had two datasets, a 59‐taxon dataset with five outgroup taxa, from Phasmatodea (2 taxa), Mantophasmatodea (1 taxon), Embioptera (1 taxon), and Grylloblattodea (1 taxon), and a 62‐taxon dataset with three additional outgroup taxa from Plecoptera (1 taxon), Dermaptera (1 taxon) and Orthoptera (1 taxon). We analysed the combined molecular?morphological dataset using the doublet and MK models in Mr Bayes , and using a parsimony heuristic search in paup . Within the monophyletic Mantodea, Mantoida is recovered as sister to the rest of Mantodea, followed by Chaeteessa; the monophyly of most of the more derived families as defined currently is not supported. We recovered novel phylogenetic hypotheses about the taxa within Blattodea (following Hennig, containing Isoptera). Unique to our study, one Bayesian analysis places Polyphagoidea as sister to all other Dictyoptera; other analyses and/or the addition of certain orthopteran sequences, however, place Polyphagoidea more deeply within Dictyoptera. Isoptera falls within the cockroaches, sister to the genus Cryptocercus. Separate parsimony analyses of independent gene fragments suggest that gene selection is an important factor in tree reconstruction. When we varied the ingroup taxa and/or outgroup taxa, the internal dictyopteran relationships differed in the position of several taxa of interest, including Cryptocercus, Polyphaga, Periplaneta and Supella. This provides further evidence that the choice of both outgroup and ingroup taxa greatly affects tree topology.  相似文献

The phylogeny of the family Tephritidae (Diptera: Tephritidae) was reconstructed from mitochondrial 12S, 16S, and COII gene fragments using 87 species, including 79 tephritid and 8 outgroup species. Minimum evolution and Bayesian trees suggested the following phylogenetic relationships: (1) A sister group relationship between Ortalotrypeta and Tachinisca, and their basal phylogenetic position within Tephritidae; (2) a sister group relationship between the tribe Acanthonevrini and Phytalmiini; (3) monophyly of Plioreocepta, Taomyia and an undescribed new genus, and their sister group relationship with the subfamily Tephritinae; (4) a possible sister group relationship of Cephalophysa and Adramini; and (5) reconfirmation of monophyly for Trypetini, Carpomyini, Tephritinae, and Dacinae. The combination of 12S, 16S, and COII data enabled resolution of phylogenetic relationships among the higher taxa of Tephritidae.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships of Lordiphosa and some taxa in Drosophilinae were analysed on the basis of a total of forty‐one selected drosophilid species. These included eighteen species of five Lordiphosa species‐groups as the main target, twenty‐three species representative of the major drosophiline ingroup taxa and four species of Steganinae as outgroup. Sixty‐eight morphological characters of adults were subjected to cladistic analysis. From the results it is concluded that Lordiphosa is polyphyletic; the Lo. tenuicauda species‐group and genus Nesiodrosophila form a single monophyletic group; Lordiphosa proper (i.e. Lordiphosa spp. minus the tenuicauda group) comprises another monophyletic group; within Lordiphosa proper the fenestrarum, nigricolor and denticeps groups are all monophyletic, but monophyly of the miki group is not strongly supported; genera Hirtodrosophila and Scaptomyza and subgenus Sophophora are all monophyletic; and within Drosophilinae, genus Scaptodrosophila is the first to have split from the main lineage, but the branching order of other clades, Chymomyza, Lordiphosa proper, Sophophora, Hirtodrosophila, Nesiodrosophila+ Lo. tenuicauda group, Scaptomyza, Dorsilopha and subgenus Drosophila, remains unresolved. The topology of maximum parsimony cladograms suggests that Lordiphosa proper lies close to Sophophora as proposed previously, although its phylogenetic position could not be determined conclusively. By contrast, bootstrap values tended to contradict another hypothesis that Lordiphosa and Scaptomyza are sister groups.  相似文献

Rhamphichthys rostratus (L.) emits brief pulses (2 ms) repeated very regularly at 50 Hz. The electric organ shows a heterogeneous distribution of the electrocyte tubes and the occurrence of three electrocyte types (caudally innervated, rostrally innervated and marginallycaudally innervated). In the sub-opercular region the electric organ consists of a pair of tubes containing only caudally innervated electrocytes. At the abdominal region the EO consists of three pairs of tubes. Each pair contains one of the described electrocyte types. The number of electrocyte tubes increases toward the tail to reach nine or ten pairs in the most caudal segments. In the intermediate region most tubes contain doubly innervated electrocytes except the ventral pair that contains caudally innervated electrocytes. The caudal 25% contains exclusively caudally innervated electrocytes. The electric organ discharge consists of five wave components (V1 to V5). Electrophysiological data are consistent with the hypothesis that V1 results from the activity of the rostral faces of rostrally innervated electrocytes. V2 results from the activities of rostral faces of marginally-caudally innervated electrocytes while V3 results from the activities of caudal faces of most electrocytes. The use of supraspecific terminal taxa to represent groups of species in phylogenetic analyses can result in changes to inferred relationships as compared to a complete species level analysis. These changes in topology result from interactions among (1) the cladistic status of the supraspecific taxa; (2) the method used to represent the taxa as single terminals, and (3) incongruence in the data set. We examine the effects of using supraspecific terminal taxa using a parallel analysis of hypothetical examples and an actual data matrix for the true seals (Mammalia: Phocidae). Incongruence among characters can produce changes in topology by shifting the ‘balance of power’ among groups of characters when supraspecific taxa are represented as single terminals. In the absence of homoplasy, the correct topology is maintained. Of the three methods for representing supraspecific taxa, the ‘ancestral’ method, which explicidy infers the common ancestor of the group corresponding to the taxon, performed the best, always maintaining the correct topology when monophyletic taxa were represented. This agrees with theoretical predictions. The ‘democratic’ and ‘exemplar’ methods, which represent the higher level taxon through a survey of all or one of its extant constituent species, respectively, were not as effective in maintaining the correct topology. Although both occasionally provided correct answers, their occurrences were largely unpredictable. The success of the exemplar method varies with the species selected. The simultaneous representation of two or more higher level taxa produced interactive effects where the resultant topology included different clades than when the taxa were collapsed individually. Interactive effects occurred with all three methods, albeit to a lesser degree for the ancestral method. Changes in topology were observed regardless of whether the higher group was monophyletic or not, but were more prevalent when it was paraphyletic. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a reliable way to determine when a paraphyletic group has been included in the analysis (e.g. through bootstrap values or indices measuring homoplasy). The implications of these findings for phylogenetic analyses of molecular data are also discussed.  相似文献

The 16S rRNA mitochondrial gene was used to reconstruct the relationships among 10 heteronemertean species (subclass Heteronemertea, phylum Nemertea);Lineus ruberandL. viridisare represented by more than one specimen to assess intraspecific variation in these enigmatic species, and the analysis includes in total 14 terminal taxa incorporating one palaeonemertean species (Tubulanus annulatus) for outgroup rooting. The aligned sequences were subjected to maximum parsimony, maximum-likelihood, and neighbor-joining analyses to estimate the phylogenetic relationship of the species. The results were concordant from all analyses and indicate that neitherLineusnorMicruraare monophyletic taxa, and that there is no support from a phylogenetic point of view to establish the monotypic genusRiseriellus.  相似文献
