Demography of soybean aphid (Homoptera: Aphididae) at summer temperatures
Soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura, is now widely established in soybean, Glycine max L., production areas of the northern United States and southern Canada and is becoming an important economic pest. Temperature effect on soybean aphid fecundity and survivorship is not well understood. We determined the optimal temperature for soybean aphid growth and reproduction on soybean under controlled conditions. We constructed life tables for soybean aphid at 20, 25, 30, and 35 degrees C with a photoperiod of 16:8 (L:D) h. Population growth rates were greatest at 25 degrees C. As temperature increased, net fecundity, gross fecundity, generation time, and life expectancy decreased. The prereproductive period did not differ between 20 and 30 degrees C; however, at 30 degrees C aphids required more degree-days (base 8.6 degrees C) to develop. Nymphs exposed to 35 degrees C did not complete development, and all individuals died within 11 d. Reproductive periods were significantly different at all temperatures, with aphids reproducing longer and producing more progeny at 20 and 25 degrees C than at 30 or 35 degrees C. Using a modification of the nonlinear Logan model, we estimated upper and optimal developmental thresholds to be 34.9 and 27.8 degrees C, respectively. At 25 degrees C, aphid populations doubled in 1.5 d; at 20 and 30 degrees C, populations doubled in 1.9 d.

The development, survival, and reproduction of the black citrus aphid Toxoptera aurantii (Boyer de Fonscolombe) were evaluated at ten constant temperatures (4, 7, 10, 15, 20, 25, 28, 30, 32 and 35 degrees C). Development was limited at 4 and 35 degrees C. Between 7 and 32 degrees C, developmental periods of immature stages varied from 44.2 days at 7 degrees C to 5.3 days at 28 degrees C. Overall immature development required 129.9 degree-days above 3.8 degrees C. The upper temperature thresholds of 32.3, 28.6, 29.3, 27.2, and 28.6 degrees C were determined from a non-linear biophysical model for the development of instars 1-4 and overall immature stages, respectively. Immature survivorship varied from 82.1 to 97.7% within the temperature range of 10-30 degrees C. However, immature survivorship was reduced to 26.3% at 7 degrees C and 33.1% at 32 degrees C. Mean adult longevity was the longest (44.2 days) at 15 degrees C and the shortest (6.2 days) at 32 degrees C. The predicted upper temperature limit for adult survivorship was at 32.3 degrees C. Total nymph production increased from 16.3 nymphs per female at 10 degrees C to 58.7 nymphs per female at 20 degrees C, declining to 6.1 nymphs per female at 32 degrees C. The estimation of lower and upper temperature limits for reproduction was at 8.2 and 32.5 degrees C, respectively. The population reared at 28 degrees C had the highest intrinsic rate of increase (0.394), the shortest population doubling time (1.8 days), and shortest mean generation time (9.5 days) compared with the populations reared at six other temperatures. The population reared at 20 degrees C had the highest net reproductive rate (54.6). The theoretical lower and upper temperature limits for population development, survival and reproduction were estimated at 9.4 and 30.4 degrees C, respectively. The biology of T. aurantii was also compared with three other citrus aphid species.

The root aphid Tetraneura nigriabdominalis (Sasaki) (Homoptera: Pemphigidae) is a pest of many Gramineae species; however, little is known about its biology and relationships with host plants. The objectives of this study were to quantify the effects of temperature on development, longevity, fecundity, and population growth of T. nigriabdominalis and to assess the effects of host plant on development of T. nigriabdominalis. The effects of temperature on performance of this root aphid were determined at 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 +/- 1 degrees C on rice roots, Oryza sativa L. Nymphal stages from birth to adult decreased from 46.3 d at 10 degrees C to 8.5 d at 30 degrees C. Aphid survival and development were lowest at 35 degrees C, and no aphid produced progeny at this temperature. Average adult longevity decreased from 23.3 d at 15 degrees C to 8.2 d at temperatures up to 35 degrees C. Average number of nymphs produced per female was highest at 25 degrees C; averaging near 30 nymphs per female, but it dropped to near zero at both 10 and 35 degrees C. The highest intrinsic rate of increase (r(m)) was 0.241 at 30 degrees C. Net reproductive rate (R(0)) ranged from 29.8 at 25 degrees C to 0.2 at 10 degrees C. The generation time (GT) decreased with increasing temperatures from 60.3 d at 10 degrees C to 13.8 d at 30 degrees C. In addition, root aphids reared at 30 degrees C on three host plants [O. sativa, Zea mays L. and Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] revealed that the developmental time of the nymphal stages averaged 6.9 d when reared on O. sativa and 10.7 d when reared on Z. mays. Comparison of the nitrogen content of the three host plants indicated that the root nitrogen content was highest in O. sativa. The effect of nitrogen content on aphid performance, however, is still not clear. Other factors, such as plant secondary chemistry, may play a role in affecting aphid performance.

Laboratory studies were conducted to obtain basic biological information of Lygus hesperus Knight (Hemiptera: Miridae) on alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), pigweed (Amaranthus palmeri S. Wats.), Russian thistle (Salsola iberica Sennen and Pau), green bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), artificial diet, and cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) square and cotton boll at 27 degrees C. The nymphal developmental duration was 28.8 d on cotton bolls, nearly twice longer, compared with approximately 15 d in other hosts. The nymphal survivorship was significantly lowest on the cotton boll (18%), whereas the survivorship in other hosts ranged from 33% (cotton square) to 93% (green bean). The average total nymphal survivorship was approximately 60% and the most nymphal mortalities occurred on the first three instars. The life-table parameters were obtained only in cotton square, artificial diet, green bean, and alfalfa. The average adult longevity in artificial diet was the shortest (18.7 d),with the longest longevity observed (36.1 d) on green beans. The intrinsic rates of population increase (r(m)) were much higher in artificial diet (0.0771) and green beans (0.0671) than in alfalfa (0.0327) and cotton square (0.0317). Although statistically significant, the difference in r(m) values between alfalfa and cotton square was very small, indicating the similarity in reproductive suitability of cotton square and alfalfain a no-choice test. Thus, even though cotton is not a preferred host, when blooming alfalfa and roadside weeds are mowed in the Texas High Plains during June-July, it is the most likely time that Lygus bugs may move from alfalfa and other host plants into adjacent cotton fields and become effective pest of actively fruiting cotton.

The development, survival and reproduction of the cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae (L.) were evaluated at three constant temperatures (20, 25 and 30°C) on cabbage, cauliflower, red cabbage, turnip and radish. The development periods of immature stages ranged from 10.7 d at 20°C to 7.60 d at 30°C for red cabbage. Total percentages of survivorship of immature stages varied from 39.40 and 82.50 within the temperature range of 25–30°C on radish. The average progeny per female was 31.15, 28.95 and 23.77 at 20, 25 and 30°C on cabbage.

The developmental time, survival and reproduction of the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover (Hom., Aphididae), were evaluated on detached cotton leaves at five constant and two alternating temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 25/30, and 30/35°C). The developmental periods of the immature stages ranged from 12.0 days at 15°C to 4.5 days at 30°C. A constant temperature of 35°C was lethal to the immature stages of A. gossypii. The lower developmental threshold for the cotton aphid was estimated at 6.2°C and it required 108.9 degree-days for a first instar to become adult. The average longevity of adult females was reduced from 39.7 days at 15°C to 12.6 days at 30/35°C. The average reproduction rate per female was 51.5 at 25/30°C and 20.9 at 30/35°C. Mean generation time of the population ranged from 10.4 days at 30°C to 24.5 days at 15°C. The largest per capita growth rate ( r m = 0.413) occurred at 30°C, the smallest at 15°C ( r m = 0.177). It was evident that temperatures over 30°C prolonged development, increased the mortality of the immature stages, shortened adult longevity, and reduced fecundity. The optimal range of temperature for population growth of A. gossypii on cotton was 25/30–30°C.

We investigated the effects of temperature and relative humidity on population growth and development of the psocid Lepinotus reticulatus Enderlein. Part of this study assessed the effects of marking psocids by using methylene blue, chalk powder, and fluorescent powder to differentiate nymphal stages during development. We found that marking psocids by using methylene blue increased mortality and took twice as long to accomplish compared with marking by using fluorescent powder. Using chalk powder shortened the duration of third and fourth nymphal instars. Marking psocids by using fluorescent powder had no effect on mortality or duration of nymphal instars. Therefore, we recommend using fluorescent powder for marking psocids. L. reticulatus did not survive at 32, 43, and 55% RH, whereas populations increased from 22.5 to 32.5 degrees C at 75% RH. The largest population growth was recorded at 30 and 32.5 degrees C, whereas only 9% of nymphs developed to adults and populations declined at 35 degrees C. We developed temperature-dependent developmental equations for eggs, individual nymphal, combined nymphal, and combined immature stages. These equations showed predicted optimal temperatures for the development of eggs, combined nymphal, and combined immature stages to be 32.3, 34.5, and 34.4 degrees C, respectively; development at these temperatures was completed in 6.3, 16.7, and 23.3 d, respectively. Our study shows that psocids that consume their exuviae develop faster than those that do not, and this effect is more pronounced at lower temperatures. These data give us better understanding of L. reticulatus population dynamics, and they can be used to develop effective management strategies for this psocid.

Life table parameters of the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, were estimated on five cotton cultivars (‘ Sealand' ,‘Siokra' ,' Vararnin' ,‘ Bakhtegan' and ‘ Sahel' ). Demographic parameters of the cotton aphid were assessed at 27.5 ± 1 ℃, 65% + 10% RH and a photoperiod of 14:10 (L: D)h. The shortest developmental time for the nymphal stages was 5.5 days on ‘Siokra' and the longest was 6.1 days on‘ Sealand'. The highest offspring per female was 29.6 on ‘Sahel' and the lowest was 15.3 on ‘Sealand'. The rm values varied from 0.272 on ‘Sealand' to 0.382 (day^-1) on ‘Varamin'. Jackknife estimates of the A. gossypii parameters on these cultivars indicated the greatest developmental rate and fecundity on ‘ Varamin' and the poorest on ‘ Sealand' cultivar.

Cotton aphids, Aphis gossypii Glover (Homoptera: Aphididae), obtained from cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., fields in the Gorgan region of northern Iran, were colonized on 'Varamin' cotton plants in a growth chamber. The development, survivorship, and life table parameters of the cotton aphid were evaluated at 27.5 +/- 1 degrees C, 65 +/- 10% RH, and aphotoperiod of 14:10 (L:D) h of artificial light on five commonly growing cotton cultivars: Varamin, 'Sealand' (relatively resistant cultivar), 'Bakhtegan', 'Sahel' (both relatively susceptible cultivars), and 'Siokra' [resistant to Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius)]. The developmental times of immature stages ranged from 4.6 d on Bakhtegan and Varamin to 6.3 d on Sealand, whereas the immature survival was 97.5 to 65% on Sahel and Siokra, respectively. On average, there were 28.7, 28.3, 23.5, 20.1, and 16.8 nymphs produced per female on Sahel, Bakhtegan, Varamin, Sealand, and Siokra, respectively. The intrinsic rate of natural increase (r(m)) for cotton aphids on Sahel was the highest, whereas the values for r(m) varied from 0.284 (nymphs per female per d) on Siokra to 0.368 on Sahel. Jackknife estimates of generation times (T), net reproductive rate (R(0)), doubling time (DT), and finite rate of increase (lambda) on these cultivars were as follows: 9.79-10.84 d for T, 9.23-23.81 nymphs per female for R(0), 2.17-3.19 d for DT, and 1.28-1.38 nymphs per female per d for lambda. Cotton aphid performance was at its highest on Sahel and lowest on Siokra.

Ceratothripoides claratris (Shumsher) is a serious pest attacking tomatoes in Thailand. Temperature-dependent development of C. claratris was studied at seven constant temperatures, i.e. 22, 25, 27, 30, 34, 35 and 40 degrees C. Pre-adult survivorship was greatest (95%) at 25 and 30 degrees C and shortest at 22 degrees C. Egg-to-adult time decreased within the range of 20 to 30 degrees C and at 34 degrees C it started to increase. The lower thermal threshold for egg-to-adult development was estimated at 16 and 18 degrees C by linear regression and the modified Logan model, respectively. The optimum temperature for egg-to-adult development was estimated at 32-33 degrees C by the modified Logan model. The influence of temperature on reproduction and longevity of C. claratris was determined at 25, 30 and 35 and 40 degrees C. Both inseminated and virgin females failed to reproduce at 40 degrees C. Virgin females produced only male offspring, confirming arrhenotoky. The sex ratio of the offspring of fertilized females was strongly female-biased, except at 25 degrees C. Mean total fecundity per female and mean daily total fecundity per female were highest for both virgin and inseminated females at 30 degrees C. Female longevity was longest at 25 degrees C and shortest at 40 degrees C. Male longevity was longest at 30 degrees C and shortest at 40 degrees C. The net reproductive rate (R0) and intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) was greatest at 30 degrees C while, mean generation time (G) and the doubling time (t) were highest at 25 degrees C. The finite rate of increase (lambda) was fairly constant (1.1-1.5 days) over the three temperatures tested. The pest potential of C. claratris for tropical Asia is discussed.

Pea aphids, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), reared at 10 degrees C contain higher levels of fatty acids than those reared at 25 degrees C. This is primarily the result of an accumulation of triacylglycerols containing myristic acid. When aphids reared at 25 degrees C were transferred to 10 degrees C there was a gradual increase in triacylglycerol content that reached a maximum at 16 days post-transfer. Treatment of aphids with precocene II prior to transfer to 10 degrees C blocked the accumulation of fatty acids including myristic acid. A single application of 2 microg precocene II/aphid or two applications of 0.5 microg precocene II/ aphid administered on consecutive days resulted in aphids moved to 10 degrees C maintaining the same fatty acid profile as aphids maintained at 25 degrees C. Aphids that were treated with precocene II and maintained at 25 degrees C did not show changes in fatty acid profiles. Rearing aphids at 10 degrees C resulted in lower rates of reproduction and lower total numbers of progeny with longer longevity. Treatment with precocene II significantly decreased the total number of progeny produced at both temperatures. Precocene II did not reduce life span of aphids reared at 25 degrees C, however, the life span of treated aphids reared at 10 degrees C was decreased. The mechanism by which precocene II prevents the accumulation of myristic acid in aphids reared at 10 degrees C remains to be determined.

The activity of entomopathogens on insect pests has been investigated for many species but the influence of entomopathogenic fungi on factors other than mortality relating to population increase has not been frequently studied. The influence of Lecanicillium attenuatum CS625 (=Verticillium lecanii CS625) on development and reproduction of cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii) was investigated. A conidia suspension of the isolate was applied onto first instar nymphs. Increased spore concentration did not significantly affect each nymphal stage, total nymphal period, pre-reproductive period and the age of first larviposition. A significant dose effect on reduction of life span, reproductive period and fecundity was observed in 1st and 3rd instars after spore application. When conidia were applied to 1st instars, life span was significantly reduced to 10.8 and 8.4 days at 1 × 104 and 1 × 108 conidia/ml, respectively from 12.2 days in the control. During the life span, total fecundity was 41 ± 7.3, 26 ± 0.8 and 22 ± 5.7 nymphs per female at 1 × 104, 1 × 106 and 1 × 108 conidia/ml, respectively compared with 51 ± 2.0 nymphs per untreated female. Reproduction period was also significantly shortened with increasing spore concentration. Application of spores to 3rd instars showed a similar trend. However, daily fecundity of individual aphids was not affected by spore dose. It was concluded that the isolate of L. attenuatum is able to affect populations of cotton aphid by reducing life span and total fecundity as well as by killing the aphids directly.

We investigated the effects often constant temperatures (20.0, 22.5, 25.0, 27.5, 30.0, 32.5, 35.0, 37.5, 39.0, and 41.0 degrees C) on the development, survival, and reproduction of the psocid Liposcelis yunnaniensis Li & Li (Psocoptera: Liposcelididae). At 39.0 and 41.0 degrees C, none of individuals could develop successfully or reproduce. From 20 to 37.5 degrees C, the development period from egg to adult ranged from 64.3 d at 20 degrees C to 16.1 d at 35 degrees C. The lower developmental threshold for egg, nymph, and combined immature stages were estimated at 15.08, 15.13, and 14.77 degrees C, respectively. After emergence the females went through a preoviposition period that ranged from 18.5 d at 22.5 degrees C to 3.11 d at 35 degrees C, whereas it was 16.3 d at 20 degrees C. Liposcelis yunnaniensis produced most eggs at 35 degrees C and the fewest at 22.5 degrees C. The population reared at 35 degrees C had the highest intrinsic rate of increase, shorter mean generation time, and shortest population doubling time compared with other temperatures. According to Weibull frequency distribution, L. yunnaniensis reared at all the temperatures had type III survivorship curves (c < 1.0). Based on life-table parameter estimations, we suggest that optimum range of temperatures for this species is from 25 to 37.5 degrees C. These data give us useful information on population biology of L. yunnaniensis and can be used to better manage this species.

Developmental rate and survivorship of small hive beetle, Aethina tumida Murray (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), life stages were measured across different temperatures (21, 25, 28, 32 and 35 degrees C) and diets, which included natural and artificial pollen, honey, and bee pupae. Temperature affected hatch success, time to hatching, and larval growth. Eggs hatched in 61 h at 21 degrees C but in < 22 h at 35 degrees C. Larvae achieved peak weight in < 8 d at 35 degrees C but needed 17 d at 21 degrees C. Diet had comparatively little effect on larval survivorship or maximum weight, although larvae fed only bee pupae had lower survivorship. Access to soil influenced pupation success. Duration of the life stage spent in the soil, during which pupation occurs, was also affected by temperature: adults emerged after 32.7 d at 21 degrees C but after only 14.8 d at 35 degrees C, albeit with high mortality. Minimum temperature for development was estimated at 13.5 degrees C for eggs, and 10.0 degrees C for larvae and pupae. Temperature influenced adult longevity and oviposition: on a honey and pollen diet average adult lifespan was 92.8 d at 24 degrees C but only 11.6 d at 35 degrees C. Beetles lived longer at 28 degrees C or lower but produced the most eggs per female, regardless of diet, at 32 degrees C. Beetle density influenced fecundity: beetles kept at three pairs per vial laid 6.7 times more eggs per female than those kept as single pairs. Overall, beetles fared best at 28-32 degrees C with mortality of all stages highest at 35 degrees C.

The development, survivorship, longevity, reproduction, and life table parameters of the Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama were evaluated at 10°C, 15°C, 20°C, 25°C, 28°C, 30°C and 33°C. The populations reared at 10°C and 33°C failed to develop. Between 15°C and 30°C, mean developmental period from egg to adult varied from 49.3 days at 15°C to 14.1 days at 28°C. The low‐temperature developmental thresholds for 1st through 5th instars were estimated at 11.7°C, 10.7°C, 10.1°C, 10.5°C and 10.9°C, respectively. A modified Logan model was used to describe the relationship between developmental rate and temperature. The survival of the 3rd through 5th nymphal instars at 15–28°C was essentially the same. The mean longevity of females increased with decreasing temperature within 15–30°C. The maximal longevity of individual females was recorded 117, 60, 56, 52 and 51 days at 15°C, 20°C, 25°C, 28°C and 30°C, respectively. The average number of eggs produced per female significantly increased with increasing temperature and reached a maximum of 748.3 eggs at 28°C (P<0.001). The population reared at 28°C had the highest intrinsic rate of increased (0.199) and net reproductive rate (292.2); and the shortest population doubling time (3.5 days) and mean generation time (28.6 days) compared with populations reared at 15–25°C. The optimum range of temperatures for D. citri population growth was 25–28°C.
