Summer habitat use by sympatric Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus, young Atlantic salmon Salmo salar and brown trout Salmo trutta was studied by two methods, direct underwater observation and electrofishing, across a range of habitats in two sub-arctic rivers. More Arctic charr and fewer Atlantic salmon parr were observed by electrofishing in comparison to direct underwater observation, perhaps suggesting a more cryptic behaviour by Arctic charr. The three species segregated in habitat use. Arctic charr, as found by direct underwater observation, most frequently used slow (mean ±s .d . water velocity 7·2 ± 16·6 cm s−1) or often stillwater and deep habitats (mean ±s .d . depth 170·1 ± 72·1 cm). The most frequently used mesohabitat type was a pool. Young Atlantic salmon favoured the faster flowing areas (mean ±s .d . water velocity 44·0 ± 16·8 cm s−1 and depth 57·1 ± 19·0 cm), while brown trout occupied intermediate habitats (mean ±s .d . water velocity 33·1 ± 18·6 cm s−1 and depth 50·2 ± 18·0 cm). Niche overlap was considerable. The Arctic charr observed were on average larger (total length) than Atlantic salmon and brown trout (mean ±s .d . 21·9 ± 8·0, 10·2 ± 3·1 and 13·4 ± 4·5 cm). Similar habitat segregation between Atlantic salmon and brown trout was found by electrofishing, but more fishes were observed in shallower habitats. Electrofishing suggested that Arctic charr occupied habitats similar to brown trout. These results, however, are biased because electrofishing was inefficient in the slow-deep habitat favoured by Arctic charr. Habitat use changed between day and night in a similar way for all three species. At night, fishes held positions closer to the bottom than in the day and were more often observed in shallower stream areas mostly with lower water velocities and finer substrata. The observed habitat segregation is probably the result of interference competition, but the influence of innate selective differences needs more study.  相似文献

Two Norwegian isolates of the monogenean Gyrodactylus salaris Malmberg, 1957 with identical cytochrome c oxidase subunit I barcodes from different hosts, show highly divergent biological and behavioural characteristics. The Lierelva parasite strain, typically infecting Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., grew exponentially on Atlantic salmon, but the Pålsbufjorden parasite strain, commonly infecting Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus L., grew slowly on both hosts and was non-pathogenic to Atlantic salmon. Both parasite strains reproduced successfully on Arctic charr, but the Atlantic salmon-infecting Lierelva strain grew faster on both hosts. Experiments with isolated worms revealed differences in reproductive rates which may account for the observed population differences. Atlantic salmon parasites consistently gave birth at an earlier age than the Arctic charr parasites, with the differential increasing from 1 day for the first birth up to 2–4 days for the third birth. Arctic charr-infecting parasites were more active on Atlantic salmon than salmon parasites on Arctic charr, a behavioural strategy leading to enhanced G. salaris mortality. Sequencing of 10 kb of nuclear genomic markers revealed only four single nucleotide polymorphisms, confirming that isolates of G. salaris with differences in fitness traits influencing establishment, fecundity and behaviour may be remarkably similar at a molecular level. The framework for reporting and control of G. salaris requires re-appraisal in light of the discovery of variants with such divergent biology.  相似文献

The annual variability in growth and life history traits of brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) and Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus (L.)) in Lake Atnsjøen, a Norwegian subalpine lake, was studied over a period of 13 years (1985–1997). The extent to which life-history characteristics recorded on one occasion can be regarded as representative for the population was explored. We found inter-cohort variation in growth for both species; estimates of asymptotic length (L ) in ten cohorts ranged between 225–305 mm (CV = 10.5%) for brown trout and 273–301 mm (CV = 4.1%) for Arctic charr. However, this variation was much lower than inter-population variation for brown trout based on single samples from 169 populations (CV = 24.6%). In Lake Atnsjøen, annual growth increment correlated highly with the number of days warmer than 7?°C (R 2=0.60–0.89) for brown trout, and days warmer than 10?°C (R 2=0.40–0.58) for Arctic charr. Females of Arctic charr were younger at sexual maturity than males, while no such difference was found in brown trout. Generally speaking, early maturing individuals of both species grew faster, particularly from age-2 and onwards, than immature individuals. Early maturing individuals, however, were smaller at maturity than those maturing one year older. Age and size at maturity were significantly correlated with asymptotic lengths only in Arctic charr females.  相似文献

Synopsis Seasonal changes in hypoosmoregulatory ability were compared in landlocked and anadromous strains of Arctic charr and Atlantic salmon. Seawater adaptability was assessed using periodic 48 h seawater challenge tests with 25. seawater. The landlocked strains of Arctic charr, two from northern Sweden and one from Southern Norway, displayed similar seasonal changes in seawater adaptability as the anadromous strain. Seawater tolerance increased during spring and remained high until the end of July — early August after which it declined. The two strains of Atlantic salmon displayed different seasonal patterns in hypoosmoregulatory ability. The anadromous strain showed a pronounced seasonal pattern with maximal seawater adaptability in early June. In contrast, seawater tolerance in the landlocked strain improved steadily during spring and remained high until late autumn. During the period of enhanced seawater tolerance, hypoosmoregulatory ability increased significantly with body size in both Arctic charr and anadromous Atlantic salmon. The minimum size at which fish were able to regulate plasma sodium following seawater transfer at a level comparable to freshwater levels (<170 mmol I–1) differed significantly between anadromous Atlantic salmon (ca. 14 cm) and Arctic charr (ca. 22 cm). The results show that seasonal changes in hypoosmoregulatory ability are present in both Atlantic salmon and Arctic charr, and that these physiological traits are retained in the corresponding landlocked strains. However, the seasonal pattern of seawater adaptability as well as the minimum size at which seawater tolerance occurs differs between the two species.  相似文献

The heavy and light subunits of myosin from white and red muscles of Atlantic salmon parr, smolt and adult individuals were analyzed by SDS-PAGE and two-dimensional electrophoresis. Tropomyosin was identified by comigration with rat tropomyosins in two-dimensional gels in the presence and absence of urea. These myofibrillar proteins were compared to those of Arctic charr.
  • 1.1. The myosin heavy chain from Atlantic salmon red muscles was associated with two types of light chain, 1S and 2S, that comigrated with the light chains 1S and 2S of Arctic charr.
  • 2.2. As in the Arctic charr, four myosin light chain spots were detected in white muscles: two fast myosin light chains type 1, one of which comigrated with its analogous in the Arctic charr; one fast myosin light chain type 2, differing slightly in isoelectric point from that of Arctic charr; and one fast myosin light chain type 3 with higher electrophoretic mobility than that of Arctic charr.
  • 3.3. Three tropomyosin spots were detected. White muscles contained only one type of β-tropomyosin and red muscles two types of α-tropomyosin. These three tropomyosin spots comigrated with those of Arctic charr.
  • 4.4. Two myosin heavy chain bands were observed in red muscles of salmon parrs but only one in the rest of the red muscles analyzed.
  • 5.5. Only one myosin heavy chain band was detected in white muscles by SDS-glycerol-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Alfa-chymotryptic peptide mapping of these white myosin heavy chain bands revealed differences attributed to the presence of a new type of myosin heavy chain first detected several months after smoltification.

Stable oxygen and carbon isotope (δ18O and δ13C) analyses of otoliths are becoming increasingly common in fisheries science and management. However, little is known about the statistical properties of isotopic data and few attempts have been made to explore appropriate statistical methods that could be used for otolith data analysis. In this paper, we present a pilot study on δ18O and δ13C data from otoliths of two anadromous fish species, Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and Pacific sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka). The results indicated that the salmon otolith data were not normally distributed, so that linear discriminant function analysis and commonly-used statistical tests such as ANOVA and the t-test may not be appropriate. Using non-parametric k-sample nearest neighbor discriminant analysis, we were able to discriminate with high accuracy among five hatcheries for Atlantic salmon and the origins of wild and hatchery sockeye salmon. Analyses also indicated that the sample sizes required to estimate δ18O and δ13C means based on the different sources of variability (between group or within group) and precision levels (≤ ±5.0 %) were not large. These results and conclusions not only address the statistical considerations of isotopic data from otoliths, but also have practical importance for fisheries management as well.  相似文献

Migratory animals can alter ecosystem function via the provision of nutrient subsidies. These subsidies are heterogeneous in space and time, which may create hot spots or hot moments in biogeochemical transformations, in turn altering the ecosystem effect of the subsidy by changing the form of the nutrients. Annual migrations of Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) transport nutrients from the marine environment to their natal freshwater ecosystems. Salmon subsidies provide high quality nutrients (e.g., nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon) that may also be large in quantity where salmon migrations are near historic levels. We hypothesized that the nutrient subsidy provided via the excretion of ammonium (NH4 +) by live salmon would stimulate microbially mediated nitrification rates in stream sediments and increase streamwater nitrate (NO3 ?) concentrations. We quantified sediment nitrification in seven streams in Southeast Alaska before and during the salmon run in 2007 and 2008. Nitrification rates increased 3-fold from before to during the salmon run (mean ± SE = 0.07 ± 0.01 to 0.24 ± 0.02 mgN gAFDM?1 d?1, respectively). The variation in nitrification was explained by both streamwater and exchangeable NH4 + concentrations (R 2 = 0.50 and 0.71, respectively), which were low before salmon and increased relative to the size of the salmon run. To experimentally test the effect of salmon subsidies on nitrification rates, we staked senesced salmon carcasses on stream sediments for 3 weeks during the salmon run and then measured nitrification rates directly under the carcasses. Sediment nitrification was 2–5 times higher under the carcasses compared to nearby sediments without the direct carcass influence. Our results confirm that biogeochemical transformations alter the form of salmon-derived nitrogen, representing an overlooked aspect in the dynamics of this subsidy. Therefore, animal-derived nutrient subsidies are not passively retained or exported in recipient ecosystems, but also transformed, thereby influencing the form and incorporation of these nutrient subsidies.  相似文献

We caught smolts of Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus (L.), Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., and brown trout, Salmo trutta L., in a trap situated at the mouth of the river Halselva (70° N 23° E), northern Norway during a 5-year period. Salmon and charr were the first to leave freshwater at the end of May, while most trout left freshwater about 14 days later. Whereas the midnight sun shines continuously during the downstream migration period, the light intensity has a diel intensity pattern. The majority of the descending migrants were recorded during the night. The number of descending fish was relatively low at water temperatures below 3°C. The increase in water level was largely caused by snowmelt and thus correlated with lower water temperatures. The number of migrants of all three species increased with increasing water level and decreased with increasing water temperature, with the exception of trout, which increased with water temperature. Notably, the increase in number of migrants was also correlated with the increase in water level the following day, indicating that fish movements represent an early response to a later spate. There was no significant relationship between the number of migrants and the daily change in water level or temperature. The three species were highly synchronised in their daily number of migrants. The strongest synchronisation was found between Arctic charr and Atlantic salmon, followed by Arctic charr and brown trout.  相似文献

Spironucleus barkhanus isolated from the blood of Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus from a marine fish farm were genetically compared with S. barkhanus isolated from the gall bladder of wild Arctic charr. The wild Arctic charr were caught in the lake used as the water source for the hatchery from which the farmed fish originated. Sequencing of the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene (SSU rDNA) from these 2 populations showed that the isolates obtained from farmed and wild Arctic charr were only 92.7 % similar. Based on the sequence differences between these isolates, it is concluded that the parasites isolated from the farmed fish have not been transmitted from wild Arctic charr in the hatchery's fresh water source. It is therefore most likely that the farmed fish were infected by S. barkhanus after they were transferred to seawater. S. barkhanus isolated from diseased farmed Arctic charr were 99.7% similar to the isolates obtained from diseased farmed Chinook (Canada) and Atlantic salmon (Norway). The high degree of sequence similarity between S. barkhanus from farmed Arctic charr, Chinook and Atlantic salmon indicates that systemic spironucleosis may be caused by specific strains/variants of this parasite. The genetic differences between the isolates of farmed and wild fish are of such magnitude that their conspecificity should be questioned.  相似文献

Life history strategies and potential marine niche use of Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus (n = 237, 84–652 mm, total body length, LT) were determined during the ice-free season (2012) at three different watercourses in south-western Greenland. All Arctic charr were collected from freshwater habitats. Based on stable isotopes of δ34S, the Arctic charr were categorized as either marine- or freshwater-dependent feeders. The use of time-integrated trophic tracers (stable isotopes of δ13C, δ15N, δ34S) suggested that several trophic groups of Arctic charr operate alongside within each fjord system. The groups suggested were one group that specialized in the marine habitat, in addition to two freshwater resident morphs (small-sized resident and/or large-growing cannibalistic individuals). Stomach contents consisted entirely of freshwater and terrestrial prey (i.e., insects), indicating that marine-dependent feeders also fed in freshwater habitats after return from their marine migration. Growth and maturity patterns further supported variable life history strategies within each watercourse. The life history strategy patterns and marine trophic niche use were consistent across the watercourses along several hundred kilometres of coastline. This study represents the first ecological baseline for partially anadromous populations of Greenland Arctic charr.  相似文献

Small lakes in northern latitudes represent a significant source of CH4 to the atmosphere that is predicted to increase with warming in the Arctic. Yet, whole-lake CH4 budgets are lacking as are measurements of δ13C-CH4 and δ2H-CH4. In this study, we quantify spatial variability of diffusive and ebullitive fluxes of CH4 and corresponding δ13C-CH4 and δ2H-CH4 in a small, Arctic lake system with fringing wetland in southwestern Greenland during summer. Net CH4 flux was highly variable, ranging from an average flux of 7 mg CH4 m?2 d?1 in the deep-water zone to 154 mg CH4 m?2 d?1 along the lake margin. Diffusive flux accounted for ~8.5 % of mean net CH4 flux, with plant-mediated and ebullitive flux accounting for the balance of the total net flux. Methane content of emitted ebullition was low (mean ± SD 10 ± 17 %) compared to previous studies from boreal lakes and wetlands. Isotopic composition of net CH4 emissions varied widely throughout the system, with δ13C-CH4 ranging from ?66.2 to ?55.5 ‰, and δ2H-CH4 ranging from ?345 to ?258 ‰. Carbon isotope composition of CH4 in ebullitive flux showed wider variation compared to net flux, ranging from ?69.2 to ?49.2 ‰. Dissolved CH4 concentrations were highest in the sediment and decreased up the water column. Higher concentrations of CH4 in the hypoxic deep water coincided with decreasing dissolved O2 concentrations, while methanotrophic oxidation dominated in the epilimnion based upon decreasing concentrations and increasing values of δ13C-CH4 and δ2H-CH4. The most depleted 13C- and 2H-isotopic values were observed in profundal bottom waters and in subsurface profundal sediments. Based upon paired δ13C and δ2H observations of CH4, acetate fermentation was likely the dominant production pathway throughout the system. However, isotopic ratios of CH4 in deeper sediments were consistent with mixing/transition between CH4 production pathways, indicating a higher contribution of the CO2 reduction pathway. The large spatial variability in fluxes of CH4 and in isotopic composition of CH4 throughout a single lake system indicates that the underlying mechanisms controlling CH4 cycling (production, consumption and transport) are spatially heterogeneous. Net flux along the lake margin dominated whole-lake flux, suggesting the nearshore littoral area dominates CH4 emissions in these systems. Future studies of whole-lake CH4 budgets should consider this significant spatial heterogeneity.  相似文献

In this study, components of the food-web in Macao wetlands were quantified using stable isotope ratio techniques based on carbon and nitrogen values. The δ13C and δ15N values of particulate organic matter (δ13CPOM and δ15NPOM, respectively) ranged from ?30.64 ± 1.0 to ?28.1 ± 0.7 ‰, and from ?1.11 ± 0.8 to 3.98 ± 0.7 ‰, respectively. The δ13C values of consumer species ranged from ?33.94 to ?16.92 ‰, showing a wide range from lower values in a freshwater lake and inner bay to higher values in a mangrove forest. The distinct dietary habits of consumer species and the location-specific food source composition were the main factors affecting the δ13C values. The consumer 15N-isotope enrichment values suggested that there were three trophic levels; primary, secondary, and tertiary. The primary consumer trophic level was represented by freshwater herbivorous gastropods, filter-feeding bivalves, and plankton-feeding fish, with a mean δ15N value of 5.052 ‰. The secondary consumer level included four deposit-feeding fish species distributed in Fai Chi Kei Bay and deposit-feeding gastropods in the Lotus Flower Bridge flat, with a mean δ15N value of 6.794 ‰. The tertiary consumers group consisted of four crab species, one shrimp species, and four fish species in the Lotus Flower Bridge Flat, with a mean δ15N value of 13.473 ‰. Their diet mainly comprised organic debris, bottom fauna, and rotten animal tissues. This study confirms the applicability of the isotopic approach in food web studies.  相似文献

Anadromous juvenile Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) were caught in the Sila River (66°21'N, 13°10'E, Nordland County, Norway) by use of a fish trap during their migration towards the sea in May/June. The absence of tags (not captured before) and examination of otoliths from sacrificed fish revealed that none of the experimental charr had previously encountered seawater. During 4 days of exposure to seawater, only minor changes in blood plasma osmolality, and blood plasma concentrations of Na+, Cl- and Mg2+ were detected. An increase in Na+-K+-ATPase activity was measured during the exposure period. These results verified that first-time migrants exhibit hypoosmoregulatory capacity similar to that of smoltified Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Accordingly, the Arctic charr first-time migratory behaviour, including late descent and a possible stay within an estuary, cannot be taken as evidence of a poorly developed seawater tolerance.  相似文献

Most studies on Arctic food webs have neglected microphytobenthos as a potential food source because we currently lack robust measurements of δ13C values for microphytobenthos from this environment. As a result, the role of microphytobenthos in high latitude marine food webs is not well understood. We combined field measurements of the concentration of aqueous carbon dioxide and the stable carbon isotopic composition of dissolved inorganic carbon (δ13CDIC) from bottom water in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas with a set of stable carbon isotopic fractionation factors reflecting differences in algal taxonomy and physiology to estimate the stable carbon isotope composition of microphytobenthos-derived total organic carbon (δ13Cp). The δ13Cp for Phaeodactylum tricornutum, a pennate diatom likely to be a dominant microphytobenthos taxon, was estimated to be ?23.9 ± 0.4 ‰ as compared to a centric diatom (Porosira glacialis, δ13Cp = ?20.0 ± 1.6 ‰) and a marine haptophyte (Emiliana huxleyi, δ13Cp = ?22.7 ± 0.5 ‰) at a growth rate (µ) of 0.1 divisions per day (d?1). δ13Cp values increased by ~2.5 ‰ when µ increased from 0.1 to a maximum growth rate of 1.4 d?1. We compared our estimates of δ13Cp values for microphytobenthos with published measurements for other carbon sources in the Arctic and sub-Arctic. We found that microphytobenthos values overlapped with pelagic sources, yet differed from riverine and ice-derived carbon sources. These model results provide valuable insight into the range of possible isotopic values for microphytobenthos from this region, but we remain cautious in regard to the conclusiveness of these findings given the paucity of field measurements currently available for model validation.  相似文献

Arctic Cod (Boreogadus saida) occur throughout the circumpolar north; however, their distributions at localized scales are not well understood. The seasonal habitat associations and diet preferences across life-history stages of this keystone species are also poorly known, thereby impeding effective regulatory efforts in support of conservation objectives. The distribution of Arctic Cod in the Canadian Beaufort Sea was assessed using bottom trawling in shelf and slope habitats between 20 and 1000 m depths. Highest catch biomasses occurred at 350 and 500 m depth slope stations, coinciding with >0 °C temperatures in the Pacific–Atlantic thermohalocline and Atlantic water mass. Calanus glacialis, Calanus hyperboreus, Themisto libellula, and Themisto abyssorum were identified as key prey species in the diet of Arctic Cod, comprising approximately 86 % of total biomass in guts. Hierarchical cluster analysis with a SIMPROF test identified five statistically significant (p < 0.05) diet groups among gut samples. Arctic Cod shifted from a primarily Calanus diet at shelf stations (<200 m depth) to a Themisto diet in slope habitats (>200 m depth) coinciding with an associated increase in fish standard length with depth. Smaller Arctic Cod fed primarily on Calanus copepods and larger Arctic Cod fed primarily on the larger Themisto species. The habitat and diet associations presented here will inform knowledge of structural and functional relationships in Arctic marine ecosystems, aid in mitigation and conservation efforts, and will enhance our ability to predict the effects of climate change on the local spatial and depth associations of this pivotal marine fish.  相似文献

The trophic niche and parasite infection of Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) were explored in two lakes with sympatric burbot (Lota lota) and two lakes without burbot in subarctic Norway. The CPUE of burbot and charr were similar in one lake, but burbot had a low population density in the other. Burbot were benthivorous in both lakes. Other co-occurring species like brown trout (Salmo trutta), Atlantic salmon parr (Salmo salar), grayling (Thymallus thymallus) and minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus) were also benthivores. At high densities, benthivorous burbot forced the whole Arctic charr population to utilise mainly the limnetic trophic niche. In contrast, at low burbot density or without burbot present, Arctic charr were primarily benthivorous in the littoral zone. Thus, a clear interactive segregation in diet was observed between Arctic charr and burbot at high burbot densities. There was also a high predation pressure from burbot on young Arctic charr along the benthic zones. The extensive use of zooplankton as prey caused a high parasite infection pressure of copepod transmitted Diphyllobothrium spp. larvae, with the potential for high negative impact on the Arctic charr population. As the benthivore trophic niche was occupied by burbot, the ecological opportunities for polymorphism with benthivorous ecotypes or morphs of Arctic charr were probably prevented. Therefore, the sympatry with burbot seems to have large ecological and evolutionary consequences for this Arctic charr population compared with neighbouring lakes where burbot is absent.  相似文献

Bats are important ecosystem service providers, and therefore most relevant for both lowland and highland habitats, particularly in the tropics. Yet, it is poorly understood to what extent they perform large-scale movements, especially movements along mountain slopes. Here, we studied the movement ecology of the potentially migratory species Miniopterus natalensis at Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. We analysed stable isotope ratios of C (δ13C), N (δ15N) and H (δ2H) in keratin of sedentary frugivorous and insectivorous bats captured between 800 and 2,400 m above sea level to establish elevational gradients of stable isotope ratios in consumer tissues. We expected correlations between stable isotope ratios of the non-exchangeable portion of H in fur keratin and the elevation of capture site, but not necessarily for δ13C and δ15N. Yet, in bats of both feeding ensembles, we found δ15N of fur keratin to correlate positively with the elevation of capture sites but not δ2H. In frugivorous bats, δ13C increased with increasing capture elevation as well. By looking at intra-individual variation of δ13C and δ15N in fur keratin and wing membrane tissues of sedentary Rhinolophus cf. clivosus and of the potentially migratory species M. natalensis, we gathered evidence that M. natalensis migrates seasonally between low and high elevations along the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. Finally, based on an isoscape origin model we estimated that M. natalensis captured before and after the cold period at around 1,800 m above sea level originated from around 1,400 m a.s.l. or lower. Thus, we received convergent results in support of seasonal elevational movements of M. natalensis, probably in search for cold hibernacula at higher elevations of Mount Kilimanjaro.  相似文献

There is debate in the literature as to whether scales of fishes require acidification to remove inorganic carbonates prior to stable isotope analysis. Acid-treated and untreated scales from 208 Atlantic salmon from nine locations on both sides of the Atlantic were analysed for δ13C and δ15N. Linear mixed-effect models determined the effect of acid treatment to be statistically significant. However, the mean difference was small (δ13C 0.1 ± 0.2‰, δ15N −0.1 ± 0.2‰) and not of biological relevance. This study concludes that Atlantic salmon scales do not need to be acidified prior to stable isotope analysis.  相似文献

Some individuals within populations of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar and Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus fed diets supplemented with oxytetracycline (OTC) developed spinal deformations. Possible differences in feed intake and growth of spinally deformed fish relative to fish without any deformities were investigated. Amongst Atlantic salmon, 17% of the fish fed OTC-supplemented feed developed spinal fractures, whereas none of the fish receiving the basic feed did so. Despite deformation of the spinal column, the injured fish continued to feed and grow, but at lower rates than unaffected individuals. In contrast to Atlantic salmon, Arctic charr showed no signs of spinal fractures at any time during the 65-day experiment.  相似文献

The tarpon Megalops atlanticus is a tropical to subtropical species whose pole-ward distribution is thought to be limited by low water temperatures. In the western north Atlantic Ocean juvenile tarpon occur in estuaries of the South Atlantic Bight (SAB) north of Florida near the northern limit of its distribution, but it is currently unknown whether these individuals can survive winter, grow to maturity, and contribute to the adult population. As a first step to determine whether juvenile tarpon can survive winter conditions in the SAB, we conducted laboratory experiments to estimate minimum lethal temperatures of tarpon exposed to 1) ambient fluctuating winter water conditions and 2) a constant rate of temperature decline. Juvenile tarpon exposed to ambient winter water conditions had a mean ± standard deviation (SD) minimum lethal temperature of 13.7 ± 3.4 °C. When exposed to a constant rate of temperature decline (2 °C day?1), mean ± SD minimum lethal temperature (9.2 ± 0.8 °C) was lower than when tarpon were exposed to ambient fluctuating conditions. A combination of our results with all published data on the cold tolerance of juvenile tarpon resulted in an overall mean ± SD minimum lethal temperature of 12.0 ± 2.8 °C. Based on available long-term temperature records from SAB estuaries, overwinter survival of juvenile tarpon is unlikely in most aquatic habitats (e.g., tidal creeks, flats, open water). Similar to other estuarine transient fishes, juvenile tarpon likely exploit seasonably favorable nursery habitats and then migrate to other locations to overwinter.  相似文献
