Subdominant evergreen broad-leaved plants occurring in deciduous forests throughout temperate zones have only a short window of optimum photoassimilation in spring before canopy closure. Yet increasing photosynthetic and metabolic activity occurs concurrently with reductions in freezing resistance, resulting in vulnerability of plant tissues to late spring freezing events. Our goal was to document the temporal patterns of photosynthesis versus freezing resistance during spring in adult and juvenile leaf phenotypes of Hedera helix in Switzerland. Freezing resistances in all leaves were well below long-term minimum temperatures experienced at the study site, with adult leaf phenotypes in the forest canopy being more freezing resistant than juvenile leaves occurring closer to the ground. Reductions in freezing resistance were followed by increases in leaf photosynthetic capacities, which appeared synchronized among leaf phenotypes. Adult canopy leaves maintained a higher freezing resistance but lower photosynthetic capacity than juvenile leaves through the end of winter and into early spring. However, shortly after the cessation of freezing temperatures, adult leaves greatly increased their photosynthetic capacity relative to juvenile leaves, yet maintained freezing resistances sufficient to resist late spring freezing events. These patterns highlight the importance of the tradeoff in H. helix between exposure to potentially damaging cold temperatures in late spring and the need for high photosynthetic carbon gains before full canopy closure.  相似文献

This study assessed the variation of leaf anatomy, chlorophyll content index (CCI), maximal stomatal conductance (g s max ) and leaf wettability within the canopy of an adult European beech tree (Fagus sylvatica L.) and for beech saplings placed along the vertical gradient in the canopy. At the top canopy level (CL28m) of the adult beech, CCI and leaf anatomy reflected higher light stress, while g s max increased with height, reflecting the importance of gas exchange in the upper canopy layer. Leaf wettability, measured as drop contact angle, decreased from 85.5°?±?1.6° (summer) to 57.5°?±?2.8° (autumn) at CL28m of the adult tree. At CL22m, adult beech leaves seemed to be better optimized for photosynthesis than the CL28m leaves because of a large leaf thickness with less protective and impregnated substances, and a higher CCI. The beech saplings, in contrast, did not adapt their stomatal characteristics and leaf anatomy according to the same strategy as the adult beech leaves. Consequently, care is needed when scaling up experimental results from seedlings to adult trees.  相似文献

Light gradients within tree canopies play a major role in the distribution of plant resources that define the photosynthetic capacity of sun and shade leaves. However, the biochemical and diffusional constraints on gas exchange in sun and shade leaves in response to light remain poorly quantified, but critical for predicting canopy carbon and water exchange. To investigate the CO2 diffusion pathway of sun and shade leaves, leaf gas exchange was coupled with concurrent measurements of carbon isotope discrimination to measure net leaf photosynthesis (An), stomatal conductance (gs) and mesophyll conductance (gm) in Eucalyptus tereticornis trees grown in climate controlled whole‐tree chambers. Compared to sun leaves, shade leaves had lower An, gm, leaf nitrogen and photosynthetic capacity (Amax) but gs was similar. When light intensity was temporarily increased for shade leaves to match that of sun leaves, both gs and gm increased, and An increased to values greater than sun leaves. We show that dynamic physiological responses of shade leaves to altered light environments have implications for up‐scaling leaf level measurements and predicting whole canopy carbon gain. Despite exhibiting reduced photosynthetic capacity, the rapid up‐regulation of gm with increased light enables shade leaves to respond quickly to sunflecks.  相似文献

Key message

The Acacia phyllode leaf form is hypothesised to be an adaptation to drought. However, in this experiment, the timing of phyllode development was not related to a low water treatment.

Abstract

Acacia species have markedly different leaf forms known as compound leaves, transitional leaves, and phyllodes, also known as heteroblastic development. The different leaf types are thought to confer an advantage under varying moisture regimes, with phyllodes favoured in drier conditions. The hypothesis that phyllodes develop earlier under low water treatment was tested in this experiment. Three watering level treatments (100, 50, and 25 %) were imposed on seedlings of A. implexa to assess developmental traits (leaf emergence, initial onset of transitional leaves, and phyllodes), biomass allocation patterns (root, stem, compound leaf area/mass, transitional leaf area/mass, and phyllode area/mass), and leaf anatomy traits (epidermis, palisade and spongy mesophyll, and stomatal density). Across watering treatments, there was no difference in the developmental onset of transitional leaves or phyllodes (produced at the 6th and 9th nodes, respectively). Under low watering treatment, there was a decrease in stem height per unit stem diameter, shorter internodes, and greater allocation of biomass to roots. There was no significant difference in leaf anatomy traits. Under the low watering treatment, there was less compound leaf area and mass due to leaf shedding. In this experiment, the low watering treatment did not favour phyllode development at the expense of compound leaf development. Rather, it was found that A. implexa responds to a low water treatment similarly to many other plant species: increased allocation to roots, increased stem area per unit stem height, decrease in leaf area through senescence of older leaves, and lower relative growth rates.

The functional variability in leaf angle distribution within the canopy was analysed with respect to regulation of light interception and photoprotection. Leaf orientation strongly determined the maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) during summer: horizontal leaves were highly photoinhibited whereas vertical leaf orientation protected the leaves from severe photoinhibition. The importance of leaf orientation within the canopy was analysed in two Mediterranean macchia species with distinct strategies for drought and photoinhibition avoidance during summer. The semi-deciduous species (Cistus monspeliensis) exhibited strong seasonal but minimal spatial variability in leaf orientation. Reversible structural regulation of light interception by vertical leaf orientation during summer protected the leaves from severe photoinhibition. The evergreen sclerophyll (Quercus coccifera) exhibited high spatial variability in leaf angle distribution throughout the year and was less susceptible to photoinhibition. The importance of both strategies for plant primary production was analysed with a three-dimensional canopy photoinhibition model (CANO-PI). Simulations indicated that high variability in leaf angle orientation in Q. coccifera resulted in whole-plant carbon gain during the summer, which was 94 % of the maximum rate achieved by theoretical homogeneous leaf orientations. The high spatial variability in leaf angle orientation may be an effective compromise between efficient light harvesting and avoidance of excessive radiation in evergreen plants and may optimize annual primary production. Whole plant photosynthesis was strongly reduced by water stress and photoinhibition in C. monspeliensis; however, the simulations indicated that growth-related structural regulation of light interception served as an important protection against photoinhibitory reduction in whole-plant carbon gain.  相似文献

Leaf quantity (i.e., canopy leaf area index, LAI), quality (i.e., per‐area photosynthetic capacity), and longevity all influence the photosynthetic seasonality of tropical evergreen forests. However, these components of tropical leaf phenology are poorly represented in most terrestrial biosphere models (TBMs). Here, we explored alternative options for the representation of leaf phenology effects in TBMs that employ the Farquahar, von Caemmerer & Berry (FvCB) representation of CO2 assimilation. We developed a two‐fraction leaf (sun and shade), two‐layer canopy (upper and lower) photosynthesis model to evaluate different modeling approaches and assessed three components of phenological variations (i.e., leaf quantity, quality, and within‐canopy variation in leaf longevity). Our model was driven by the prescribed seasonality of leaf quantity and quality derived from ground‐based measurements within an Amazonian evergreen forest. Modeled photosynthetic seasonality was not sensitive to leaf quantity, but was highly sensitive to leaf quality and its vertical distribution within the canopy, with markedly more sensitivity to upper canopy leaf quality. This is because light absorption in tropical canopies is near maximal for the entire year, implying that seasonal changes in LAI have little impact on total canopy light absorption; and because leaf quality has a greater effect on photosynthesis of sunlit leaves than light limited, shade leaves and sunlit foliage are more abundant in the upper canopy. Our two‐fraction leaf, two‐layer canopy model, which accounted for all three phenological components, was able to simulate photosynthetic seasonality, explaining ~90% of the average seasonal variation in eddy covariance‐derived CO2 assimilation. This work identifies a parsimonious approach for representing tropical evergreen forest photosynthetic seasonality in TBMs that utilize the FvCB model of CO2 assimilation and highlights the importance of incorporating more realistic phenological mechanisms in models that seek to improve the projection of future carbon dynamics in tropical evergreen forests.  相似文献

Light-saturated photosynthetic rates at air levels of carbon dioxide were measured about weekly in upper canopy leaves of two soybean cultivars grown at stand densities of 40 and 100 plants per square meter. Early in the season, when leaf area indices differed between stand densities, plants of both cultivars grown at high stand density had photosynthetic rates which averaged 23% lower than plants at low stand density. Later in the season, when there were no differences in leaf area index between stand densities, there were no differences in photosynthetic rates in the cultivar Kent, but rate differences of about 14% persisted in the cultivar Williams. In Williams mainstem leaves emerged into full sunlight later in their development at high than at low stand density. In both cultivars the oldest fully exposed leaves were photosynthetically immature for much of the season, as higher rates could be achieved by lower leaves which were shaded in situ. The results identify shading of young developing leaves and photosynthetic immaturity of fully exposed leaves as factors limiting canopy photosynthesis in soybeans, and indicate cultivar differences in how much high stand density reduces photosynthetic capacity.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) withdrawn from leaves before abscission can help to supply N requirements in plants of nutrient poor habitats. Besides N shortage, Mediterranean Quercus seedlings must face water and light stresses. However, there is little information on the influence of these stresses in the nitrogen resorption efficiency (NRE) at leaf level, and none at canopy level. We tested in two separated experiments how changes in water and light availability affect NRE and its components at both levels in seedlings of two evergreen oaks [Quercus coccifera L. and Quercus ilex subsp. ballota (Desf.) Samp] and in a semi-deciduous one (Quercus faginea Lam.). In the summer drought experiment seedlings were left to dehydrate to ?2.5 and to ?0.5 MPa (water stress and control, respectively) before watering. In the light experiment seedlings were grown at 100, 20 and 5% of full sunlight. The leaf abscission pattern was monitored and N content, N loss and NRE were calculated in the two peaks of leaf abscission (spring and late summer). After one year of treatments summer drought had little effect on N resorption and its components at both leaf and canopy levels. Moderate shade increased NRE at leaf level in Q. faginea but this response vanished at canopy level. N loss at the leaf level was unaffected. Deep shade decreased N lost at the canopy level in spring but increased it in late summer. N resorption and N losses at the canopy level were lower at late summer than in spring, due to fewer leaves falling. This study highlights the importance of the scale on the study of nitrogen dynamics (leaf vs. whole canopy), as the scaling factor (amount of leaf shedding) also responds to environmental factors, either enhancing or reversing the effects found at leaf level.  相似文献

Diurnal changes in the vertical profiles of irradiance incident upon the adaxial leaf surface (I), leaf resistance (r1), leaf water potential (ψ), osmotic potential (π), and turgor potential (P) were followed concurrently in crops of maize (Zea mays L. cv. Pa602A), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench cv. RS 610), and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Havanna Seed 211) on several days in 1968 to 1970 when soil water potentials were low. The r1, measured with a ventilated diffusion porometer, of the leaves in the upper canopy decreased temporarily after sunrise [~0530 hours Eastern Standard Time] as I increased, but then r1 increased again between 0700 and 0830 hr Eastern Standard Time as the ψ, measured with a pressure chamber, decreased rapidly from the values of −7, −4 and −6 bars at sunrise to minimal values of −18, −22 and −15 bars near midday in the maize, sorghum, and tobacco, respectively. The π, measured with a vapor pressure osmometer, also decreased after sunrise, but not to the same degree as the decrease in ψ, so that a P of zero was reached in some leaves between 0730 and 0800 hours. The lower (more negative) π of leaves in the upper canopy than those in the lower canopy gave the upper leaves a higher P at a given ψ than the lower leaves in all three species; leaves at intermediate heights had an intermediate P. This difference between leaves at the three heights in the canopy was maintained at all values of ψ. The r1 remained unchanged over a wide range of P and then increased markedly at a P of 2 bars in maize, −1 bar in sorghum, and near zero P in tobacco: r1 also remained constant until ψ decreased to −17, −20, and −13 bars in leaves at intermediate heights in maize, sorghum, and tobacco, respectively. In all three species r1 of leaves in the upper canopy increased at more negative values of ψ than those at the base of the canopy, and in tobacco, leaves in the upper canopy wilted at more negative values of ψ than those in the lower canopy.  相似文献

Rhizophora mangle L., the predominant neotropical mangrove species, occupies a gradient from low intertidal swamp margins with high insolation, to shaded sites at highest high water. Across a light gradient, R. mangle shows properties of both “light-demanding” and “shade-tolerant” species, and defies designation according to existing successional paradigms for rain forest trees. The mode and magnitude of its adaptability to light also change through ontogeny as it grows into the canopy. We characterized and compared phenotypic flexibility of R. mangle seedlings, saplings, and tree modules across changing light environments, from the level of leaf anatomy and photosynthesis, through stem and whole-plant architecture. We also examined growth and mortality differences among sun and shade populations of seedlings over 3 yr. Sun and shade seedling populations diverged in terms of four of six leaf anatomy traits (relative thickness of tissue layers and stomatal density), as well as leaf size and shape, specific leaf area (SLA), leaf internode distances, disparity in blade–petiole angles, canopy spread: height ratios, standing leaf numbers, summer (July) photosynthetic light curve shapes, and growth rates. Saplings showed significant sun/shade differences in fewer characters: leaf thickness, SLA, leaf overlap, disparity in bladepetiole angles, standing leaf numbers, stem volume and branching angle (first-order branches only), and summer photosynthesis. In trees, leaf anatomy was insensitive to light environment, but leaf length, width, and SLA, disparities in bladepetiole angles, and summer maximal photosynthetic rates varied among sun and shade leaf populations. Seedling and sapling photosynthetic rates were significantly depressed in winter (December), while photosynthetic rates in tree leaves did not differ in winter and summer. Seasonal and ontogenetic changes in response to light environment are apparent at several levels of biological organization in R. mangle, within constraints of its architectural baiiplan. Such variation has implications for models of stand carbon gain, and suggest that response flexibility may change with plant age.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Theory for optimal allocation of foliar nitrogen (ONA) predicts that both nitrogen concentration and photosynthetic capacity will scale linearly with gradients of insolation within plant canopies. ONA is expected to allow plants to efficiently use both light and nitrogen. However, empirical data generally do not exhibit perfect ONA, and light-use optimization per se is little explored. The aim was to examine to what degree partitioning of nitrogen or light is optimized in the crowns of three tropical canopy tree species.

Methods

Instantaneous photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) incident on the adaxial surface of individual leaves was measured along vertical PPFD gradients in tree canopies at a frequency of 0·5 Hz over 9–17 d, and summed to obtain the average daily integral of PPFD for each leaf to characterize its insolation regime. Also measured were leaf N per area (Narea), leaf mass per area (LMA), the cosine of leaf inclination and the parameters of the photosynthetic light response curve [photosynthetic capacity (Amax), dark respiration (Rd), apparent quantum yield (ϕ) and curvature (θ)]. The instantaneous PPFD measurements and light response curves were used to estimate leaf daily photosynthesis (Adaily) for each leaf.

Key Results

Leaf Narea and Amax changed as a hyperbolic asymptotic function of the PPFD regime, not the linear relationship predicted by ONA. Despite this suboptimal nitrogen partitioning among leaves, Adaily did increase linearly with PPFD regime through co-ordinated adjustments in both leaf angle and physiology along canopy gradients in insolation, exhibiting a strong convergence among the three species.

Conclusions

The results suggest that canopy tree leaves in this tropical forest optimize photosynthetic use of PPFD rather than N per se. Tropical tree canopies then can be considered simple ‘big-leaves’ in which all constituent ‘small leaves’ use PPFD with the same photosynthetic efficiency.Key words: Optimal resource allocation, nitrogen, photosynthetic capacity, leaf mass per area, tropical trees, radiation use efficiency, scaling, leaf angle, canopy architecture, big leaf model  相似文献

We investigated how water transport capacity, wood density and wood anatomy were related to leaf photosynthetic traits in two lowland forests in Panama. Leaf-specific hydraulic conductivity (kL) of upper branches was positively correlated with maximum rates of net CO2 assimilation per unit leaf area (Aarea) and stomatal conductance (gs) across 20 species of canopy trees. Maximum kL showed stronger correlation with Aarea than initial kL suggesting that allocation to photosynthetic potential is proportional to maximum water transport capacity. Terminal branch kL was negatively correlated with Aarea/gs and positively correlated with photosynthesis per unit N, indicating a trade-off of efficient use of water against efficient use of N in photosynthesis as water transport efficiency varied. Specific hydraulic conductivity calculated from xylem anatomical characteristics (ktheoretical) was positively related to Aarea and kL, consistent with relationships among physiological measurements. Branch wood density was negatively correlated with wood water storage at saturation, kL, Aarea, net CO2 assimilation per unit leaf mass (Amass), and minimum leaf water potential measured on covered leaves, suggesting that wood density constrains physiological function to specific operating ranges. Kinetic and static indices of branch water transport capacity thus exhibit considerable co-ordination with allocation to potential carbon gain. Our results indicate that understanding tree hydraulic architecture provides added insights to comparisons of leaf level measurements among species, and links photosynthetic allocation patterns with branch hydraulic processes.  相似文献

We evaluated the hypothesis that photosynthetic traits differ between leaves produced at the beginning (May) and the end (November–December) of the rainy season in the canopy of a seasonally dry forest in Panama. Leaves produced at the end of the wet season were predicted to have higher photosynthetic capacities and higher water-use efficiencies than leaves produced during the early rainy season. Such seasonal phenotypic differentiation may be adaptive, since leaves produced immediately preceding the dry season are likely to experience greater light availability during their lifetime due to reduced cloud cover during the dry season. We used a construction crane for access to the upper canopy and sampled 1- to 2-month-old leaves marked in monthly censuses for six common tree species with various ecological habits and leaf phenologies. Photosynthetic capacity was quantified as light- and CO2-saturated oxygen evolution rates with a leaf-disk oxygen electrode in the laboratory (O2max) and as light-saturated CO2 assimilation rates of intact leaves under ambient CO2 (Amax). In four species, pre-dry season leaves had significantly higher leaf mass per unit area. In these four species, O2max and Amax per unit area and maximum stomatal conductances were significantly greater in pre-dry season leaves than in early wet season leaves. In two species, Amax for a given stomatal conductance was greater in pre-dry season leaves than in early wet season leaves, suggesting a higher photosynthetic water-use efficiency in the former. Photosynthetic capacity per unit mass was not significantly different between seasons of leaf production in any species. In both early wet season and pre-dry season leaves, mean photosynthetic capacity per unit mass was positively correlated with nitrogen content per unit mass both within and among species. Seasonal phenotypic differentiation observed in canopy tree species is achieved through changes in leaf mass per unit area and increased maximum stomatal conductance rather than by changes in nitrogen allocation patterns. Canopy photosynthesis models have predicted an optimal leaf area index (LAI; leaf area per unit surface area) and leaf nitrogen distribution at which whole-plant carbon gain per unit N is maximized. In this study we experimentally tested these models, using transgenic P(SAG12)-IPT tobacco (SAG; Nicotiana tabacum L.) plants with delayed leaf senescence and therefore a greater LAI and more uniform N distribution than the wild type (WT). In a competition experiment, the increased density of surrounding WT plants caused a greater reduction in dry mass of mature SAG target plants than in that of WT target plants, indicating negative effects of delayed leaf senescence on performance at high canopy density. Vegetative SAG plants achieved a lower calculated daily carbon gain than competing WT plants because the former retained leaves with a negative carbon gain in the shaded, lower part of the canopy. Sensitivity analyses showed that the carbon gain of SAG plants would increase if these lower leaves were shed and the N reallocated from these leaves were used to form additional leaf area at the canopy top. This strategy, which is adopted by the WT, is most advantageous because it results in the shading of competing neighbors.  相似文献

The gas exchange of the upper fully expanded leaf of the root parasite Striga hermonthica and of its host Sorghum bicolor was measured under wet and dry conditions to identify the mechanisms of the devastating effects of the parasite on its hosts under drought. The short-term water stress severely reduced photosynthetic rate in infected sorghum, but less in S. hermonthica. Soil water stress did not affect leaf respiration rate in either S. hermonthica or infected sorghum. This suggests that under dry conditions both infected sorghum and S. hermonthica decreased autotrophic carbon gain. The transpiration rate of S. hermonthica, a major driving force for assimilate uptake from the host, was higher and less affected by water stress than that of infected sorghum. Stomatal density on the abaxial surfaces of the leaves was higher in S. hermonthica than in sorghum. Both S. hermonthica infection and water stress decreased stomatal conductance of the sorghum leaves. S. hermonthica, irrespective of soil water status, had greater stomatal aperture on the adaxial and abaxial surfaces of its leaves than infected sorghum. These results indicate that the higher transpiration rate of S. hermonthica even under water stress, achieved through higher stomatal density on the abaxial surfaces of the leaves and greater stomatal aperture on both surfaces of the leaves, may induce the maintenance of water and solute transfers from the host to the parasite leading to severe damage to the host under drought.  相似文献

Intercellular CO2 mole fractions (Ci) are lower in the upper canopy relative to the lower canopy leaves. This canopy gradient in Ci has been associated with enhanced rates of carbon assimilation at high light, and concomitant greater draw‐downs in Ci. However, increases in irradiance in the canopy are generally also associated with decreases in leaf water availability. Thus, stress effects on photosynthesis rates (A) and stomatal conductance (G), may provide a further explanation for the observed Ci gradients. To test the hypotheses of the sources of canopy variation in Ci, and quantitatively assess the influence of within‐canopy differences in stomatal regulation on A, the seasonal and diurnal variation in G was studied in relation to seasonal average daily integrated quantum flux density (Qint) in tall shade‐intolerant Populus tremula L. trees. Daily time‐courses of A were simulated using the photosynthesis model of Farquhar et al. (Planta 149, 78–90, 1980). Stable carbon isotope composition of a leaf carbon fraction with rapid turnover rate was used to estimate canopy gradient in Ci during the simulations. Daily maximum G (Gmax) consistently increased with increasing Qint. However, canopy differences in Gmax decreased as soil water availability became limiting during the season. In water‐stressed leaves, there were strong mid‐day decreases in G that were poorly associated with vapour pressure deficits between the leaf and atmosphere, and the magnitude of the mid‐day decreases in G occasionally interacted with long‐term leaf light environment. Simulations indicated that the percentage of carbon lost due to mid‐day stomatal closure was of the order of 5–10%, and seasonal water stress increased this percentage up to 20%. The percentage of carbon lost due to stomatal closure increased with increasing Qint. Canopy differences in light environment resulted in a gradient of daily average Ci of approximately 20 µmol mol?1. The canopy variation in seasonal and diurnal reductions in G led to a Ci gradient of approximately 100 µmol mol?1, and the actual canopy Ci gradient was of the same magnitude according to leaf carbon isotope composition. This study demonstrates that stress effects influence Ci more strongly than within‐canopy light gradients, and also that leaves acclimated to different irradiance and water stress conditions may regulate water use largely independent of foliar photosynthetic potentials.  相似文献

Summary A simulation model for radiation absorption and photosynthesis was used to test the hypothesis that observed nonuniform distributions of nitrogen concentrations in young Eucalyptus grandis trees result in greater amounts of daily assimilation than in hypothetical trees with uniform N distributions. Simulations were performed for trees aged 6, 9, 12 and 16 months which had been grown in plantations under a factorial combination of two levels of fertilization and irrigation. Observed leaf N distribution patterns yielded daily assimilation rates which were only marginally greater (<5%) than for hypothetical trees with uniform distributions. Patterns of assimilation distribution in individual tree crowns closely resembled those for absorbed radiation, rather than for N. These conclusions were unaffected by three choices of alternative leaf area density distributions. The simulation model was also used to calculate hourly and daily rates of canopy assimilation to investigate the relative importance of radiation absorption and total canopy nitrogen on assimilation. Simulated hourly rates of carbon assimilation were often lightsaturated, whereas daily carbon gain was directly proportional to radiation absorbed by the tree crown and to total mass of N in the leaves. Leaf nitrogen concentrations determined photosynthetic capacity, whereas total leaf area determined the amount of radiation absorbed and thus the degree to which capacity was realized. Observed total leaf area and total crown N were closely correlated. The model predicted that nitrogen use efficiences (NUE, mol CO2 mol–1 N) were 60% higher for unfertilized than for fertilized trees at low levels of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). Nitrogen use efficiency was dependent on fertilizer treatment and on the amount of absorbed PAR; NUE declined with increasing absorbed PAR, but decreased more rapidly for unfertilized than for fertilized trees. Annual primary productivity was linearly related to both radiation absorbed and to mass of N in the canopy.  相似文献
