The effects of temperature, salinity and irradiance on the growthof the harmful red tide dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoideswere examined in the laboratory. From 60 different combinationsof temperature (10–30°C) and salinity (10–40)under saturated irradiance, C. polykrikoides exhibited its maximumspecific growth rate of 0.41 day-1 at a combination of 25°Cand salinity of 34. Optimum growth rates of >0.3 day-1 wereobserved at temperatures ranging from 21 to 26°C and atsalinities from 30 to 36. The organism did not grow at temperatures10°C and only grew at salinities >30 if the temperaturewas >15°C. It was able to grow in temperatures rangingfrom 15 to 30°C and at salinities from 20 to 36. These valuesclosely resembled those observed for this species in situ. Itappears as if C. polykrikoides is a stenohaline organism thatprefers high salinities, indicative of offshore waters. Temperaturehad the greatest influence on the growth rate, followed by salinity, and then the interaction between temperature and salinity. Theoptimum irradiance for growth was >90 µmol m-2 s-1.Photoinhibition did not occur at 230 µmol m-2 s-1, whichwas the maximum irradiance used in this study.  相似文献

The Carbon Economy of Rubus chamaemorus L. II. Respiration   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
MARKS  T. C. 《Annals of botany》1978,42(1):181-190
Respiratory activity and seasonal changes in carbohydrate contentof the storage organs of Rubus chamaemorus L. have been investigated.Leaf dark respiration rate increases in a non-linear mannerfrom 0·7 mg CO2 evolved dm–2 h–1 at 0 °Cto 4·6 rng CO2 evolved dm–2 hh–1 at 30 °C.Root and rhizome respiration rates increase from 1 µ1O2 uptake g–1 fresh weight h–1 at 0.7 ° C to10 µ10, uptake g–1 f. wt h–1 at 20 °C.Rhizome carbohydrate reserves decline from a September peakof 33 per cent alcohol insoluble d. wt to 16 per cent in May. The circumpolar distribution of R. chamaemorus is discussedin relation to the evidence presented here and in the precedingpaper of the series.  相似文献

The geographical distribution, seasonal life cycle, biomassand production of a copepod Calanus sinicus were investigatedin and around Kii Channel of the Inland Sea of Japan. The distributioncenter of the population was located in Kii Channel. The patternof the seasonal variation in abundance of copepodites and adultsdiffered geographically within the study area. In Kii Channel, for example, they were most abundant in June-July and leastabundant in October. Over the study area, the reproduction ofC.sinicus took place throughout the year, indicating the absenceof diapause phase. In adults, females usually outnumbered males. The prosome length of late copepodites and adults was inverselycorrelated with water temperature. The annual mean biomass washighest (4.87 mg C m–3 or 231 mg C m–2) in Kii Channel. The potential production rate of the population exhibited aseasonal variation more or less similar to that of the biomassand the annual potential production rate was 358 mg C m–3year–1 (14.1 g C m–2 year–1) in Kii Channel.Daily production and biomass (P/B) ratios in Kii Channel increasedfrom 0.11 at 11.8°C to 0.26 at 20°C.  相似文献

A strain of the marine rotifer Synchaeta cecilia valentina,n. subsp., isolated from the Hondo of Elche Spanish Mediterraneancoastal lagoon at 22 salinity, was cultured in the laboratoryin 20 ml test tubes and fed with the alga Tetrasemis suecica. The effect of two temperatures (20 and 24°C), four salinities(20,25,30 and 37) and two food levels (15 000 and 25000 cellsml–1) on the life history traits of this rotifer werestudied in life tables performed with replicated individualcultures. Temperature and salinity had a significant negativeeffect (P < 0.001) on the average lifespan (LS) and on thenumber of offspring per female (R0) The effect of food levelon LS is unclear, whereas R0 is greater at 20°C with thelower concentration of algae and at 24°C with the higheralgal concentration. The maximum values of LS and R0, 5.6 daysand 9.2 offspring per female, respectively, were recorded at20°C, 25o salinity and low food concentration. There isalso a clear negative effect on the intrinsic growth rate (r)due to salinity. The effect of temperature depends on the foodlevel and, as occurs with R0 the maximum values of r occur withthe lower algal concentration at 20°C, whereas at 24°Cthey are obtained with the higher algal concentration. Theser values, from 1.04 to 1.10 day–1, were reached at 24°C,salinities of 20–25 and with high food concentration.  相似文献

The fatty acid composition of phospholipids in the microsomesand the vanadate-sensitive H+-ATPase activity of the roots ofone-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings werestudied during flushing in spring. The seedlings in hydroponiccultures were subjected to different root temperatures (5, 12or 20°C). The shoot was maintained at 20/15° C (day/night)during the 35 d experiment. After 35 d at 5° C, root growthwas totally inhibited and shoot growth partly inhibited. In roots grown at 5° C the fatty acid composition of themicrosomal phospholipids and the degree of fatty acid unsaturation(bond index) were unchanged, while in roots grown at 12 and20° C the fatty acid composition changed and bond indexdecreased. At those root temperatures, the most obvious changewas a decline in the proportion of linolenic acid (C18:3). Inthe new white roots grown either at 12°C or 20°C theproportion of C18:2 was higher and the proportion of C18:3 lowerthan in 1-year-old roots. Independently of root temperature,H+-ATPase activity, determined on a fresh weight basis, declinedto half of the original activity during the experiment. Thedecline in H+ -ATPase activity was most rapid during the firstweek. In the old roots the decline in H+-ATPase activity followedclosely the decline in amount of membrane protein. In new rootsH+-ATPase activity was high and increased with increasing roottemperature. These results suggest that in the roots of Scotspine seedlings, vanadate-sensitive H+-ATPase activity is dependenton age, while changes in the microsomal fatty acid compositionof phospholipids are regulated mainly by root temperature. We report that growth of Dunaliella salina at either 13°C/150µmol m–2s–1 or 30°C/2,500 µmol m–2s–1 results in the accumulation of comparable levels ofcarotenoids and the zeaxanthin-binding protein, Cbr. We concludethat carotenoid and Cbr abundance in this green alga respondto changes in PSII ‘excitation pressure’ ratherthan to high light per se. The seasonal variability of phytoplankton in the EquatorialAtlantic was analysed using Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor(SeaWiFS)-derived chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration data from1998 to 2001, together with in situ Chl a and primary productiondata obtained during seven cruises carried out between 1995and 2000. Monthly averaged SeaWiFS Chl a distributions werein agreement with previous observations in the Equatorial Atlantic, showing marked differences between 10° W in the EasternTropical Atlantic (ETRA) and 25° W in the Western TropicalAtlantic (WTRA) provinces (Longhurst et al. 1995. J. PlanktonRes., 17, 1245–1271). The seasonal cycle of SeaWiFS-derivedChl a concentration calculated for 0–10° S, 0–20°W (ETRA) is consistent with in situ Chl a measurements, withvalues ranging from 0.16 mg m–3, from February to April,to 0.52 mg m–3 in August. Lower variability was observedin 10° N–10° S, 20–30° W (WTRA) whereminimum and maximum concentrations occurred in April (0.15 mgm–3) and in August (0.24 mg m–3), respectively.A significant empirical relationship between depth-integratedprimary production and in situ measured sea surface Chl a wasfound for ETRA, allowing us to estimate the seasonal cycle ofdepth-integrated primary production from SeaWiFS-derived Chla. As for Chl a, this model was verified in a small area ofthe Eastern Equatorial Atlantic (0–10° S, 0–20°W), although in this instance it was not completely able todescribe the magnitude and temporal variability of in situ primaryproduction measurements. The annual euphotic depth-integratedprimary production rate estimated for ETRA by our empiricalmodel was 1.4 Gt C year–1, which represents 16% of theopen ocean primary production estimated for the whole AtlanticOcean.  相似文献

The photosynthetic rate measured at 20°C was higher in ricegrown under 20/18°C day/night temperature and 350 µmoIquanta m–2s–1 than in rice grown under 25/20°Cand 1,000 µmol quanta m–2s–1, whereas therewas no difference in the photosynthetic rate measured at 25°Cbetween rice grown in these two ways. This difference was suggestedto be caused by an enhanced ribulose-l,5-bis-phosphate-regenerationcapacity in the low-temperature/ir-radiance-grown rice. Kennedy, C. D. and Gonsalves, F. A. N. 1988. H+ efflux and trans-rootpotential measured while increasing the temperature of solutionsbathing excised roots of Zea mays.—J. exp. Bot. 39: 37–49. Novel temperature-ramp procedures have been used to measureH+ efflux and trans-root potential of excised roots of Zea mays(var. Fronica). Two types of experiment were performed: (1),increasing temperature from 17°C, and (2), pre-cooling theroots to 1°C before starting the temperature ramp. The ratesof increase of temperature for H+ efflux and trans-root potentialexperiments were 0·5 and 2·1°C min–1respectively The H+ scans revealed strong sharp maxima at 30°C and 32°C,for non-pre-cooled and pre-cooled roots respectively, the latterbeing significantly smaller. The trans-root potential scansfor the pre-cooled roots showed a corresponding maximum at 30°C,which was inhibited by KCN (1-0 mmol dm–3) with or withoutSHAM (10 mmol dm–3), or Hg2+ (1, 10, 100 µmol dm–3)in the bathing solutions. Some of the evidence suggests thatthese maxima are associated with electrogenic H+ pumping, mediatedby a plasma membrane-bound ATPase. However, no correspondingmaximum was observed in the trans-root potential scans for non-pre-cooledroots, the potential remaining at about — 75 m V from20°C to 35°C. As there is a 7-fold increase in H+ effluxbetween 20°C and 30°C, the relationship between netH+ efflux and electrogenic proton pumping in these roots isby no means clear. Some possibilities are considered here. Pre-cooled and non-pre-cooled roots show clear maxima in thetrans-root potential scans at about 46°C, at which temperaturethere is a slight net H+ influx. This, and other less prominentfeatures observed, are briefly discussed. Key words: H+ efflux, trans-root potential, temperature-ramp procedure, Zea mays, roots  相似文献

Low temperature tolerance was investigated in the imbibed seedof 15 seed lots compnsmg seven cultivars of Lactuca sativa L.During rapid cooling (20 °C h–1) some seeds of allseed lots survived to –16 °C but none to –20°C. The majority of seed lots retained over 50 per centviability above –14 °C due to isolation of the embryofrom external ice by the endosperm, and subsequent embryo super-cooling.Certain seed lots, including all three seed lots of cv. TomThumb, showed high mortality at temperatures above –10°C. Correlation of mortality with the formation of externalice suggested that the endosperm is not an effective nucleationbarrier in these seed lots. Survival to –20 °C was increased at slower coolingrates (6 to 1 °C h–1) due to freeze desiccation ofthe embryo, but seed lots varied considerably in their toleranceof specific cooling rates. A model to explain this variationwas developed incorporatmg (1) seed lot super-cooling limittemperature, (2) the rate at which freeze dehydration of thesupercooled embryo took place, (3) the moisture content at whichnucleation (at –20 °C) was no longer certain and (4)the.initial equilibrium moisture content of the fully imbibedseed. Factors (1), (2) and (3) were found to be relatively constant, but low (or artificially reduced) seed moisture content wasclosely correlated with high survival at natural cooling rates.Seed size fractions of similar moisture content from a singlecultivar showed that more small seeds survive cooling at 3 °Ch–1 to –20 °C than larger seed. Seed with pierced endosperms or ineffective nucleation barrierswere capable of surviving to at least –10 °C if cooledslowly (1 °C h–1) but were killed by rapid (20 °Ch–1) cooling. Chaetognath species composition, diversity and depth distributionwere investigated inside and outside a warm-core ring off thenorth-east coast of Japan. Time series samples were collectedat a station inside a Kuroshio warm-core ring (KWCR) and ata station in the surrounding Oyashio water. Greater mean abundanceof 2.51 ± 0.116 (mean ± SE) chaetognaths m-3 wasfound outside the ring compared with 1.75 ± 0.321 chaetognathsm-3 collected within the ring. However, species diversity valueswere higher within the KWCR (Shannon–Weaver index). Eukrohniahamata was the dominant species outside the ring, comprising79.8–87.9% of the total chaetognaths per haul. Inside,Sagitta minima was dominant, comprising 35.1–44.3%. MostE. hamata were collected in deeper layers within the KWCR andtheir abundance was on average only 9% of that found in theOyashio region. Only E. hamata and Sagitta scrippsae had differentdepth distributions in the KWCR. The vertical distribution ofE. hamata by body size appeared altered by the KWCR. Althoughthe mean length of E. hamata was not significantly differentbetween regions, sexual development appeared inhibited in thering. Sagitta elegans collected in the KWCR were mostly smallin size (<10 mm), significantly smaller than in the Oyashiowater.  相似文献

86Rb uptake was examined in two species of unicellular greenalgae, Chlamydomonas nivalis isolated from snow, and a cellwall-less mutant of the temperate freshwater Chlamydomonas reinhardii. In C. reinhardii cells grown at 20°C and cooled rapidlyto 0°C, 86Rb uptake was abolished. Cells cooled rapidlyto –5°C in the absence of ice accumulated 86Rb veryrapidly but the time course of this uptake suggested non-selectiveaccumulation through a damaged plasmalemma. Cells grown at 8°Cwere viable, able to divide and motile; they showed no signsof cold-shock and 86Rb uptake, albeit slow, was measurable at–5°C in the absence of extracellular ice. Cells ofC. nivalis grown at 20°C were damaged at sub-zero temperaturesalthough they did show an enhanced 86Rb uptake at 0°C. Cellsgrown at 5°C were able to accumulate 86Rb from media undercooledto -5°C in the absence of extracellular ice, and again showedenhanced uptake at 0°C. The process of acclimation to lowtemperature appears to differ in the two species. Key words: Chlamydomonas, temperature, 86Rb uptake, membrane  相似文献

The plastochron index (PI) has been compared with leaf growthand biomass accumulation in young soya bean plants of severalcultivars that were grown in controlled environments with differentirradiance levels and durations, temperatures, and nitrogen(N) regimes. Increasing the photoperiod from 10 to 16 h day–1 increasedthe plastochron rate (PR) and the proportion of axillary growth.Doubling the photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) to 1000µmol m–2S–1, increased PR and the proportionof roots to total plant weight, but decreased the proportionof stems plus petioles to total. In a series of experiments, the plants were grown in an 8 h photoperiod at constant temperaturesof 17, 20, 26 or 32 °C. As temperature increased, PR increased, but the duration of leaf expansion decreased. Leaves were largestat 20 and progressively smaller at 26, 32 and 17 °C. Biomasswas greatest for a given PI at 20 °C and decreased in theorder of 26, 32, and 17 °C. The proportion of axillary growthalso was greatest at 20 °C. When plants were grown in a15 h photoperiod at temperatures from 17.1 to 26.6 °C, leafsize continued to increase up to the highest temperature. At17 °C, the PR in the 15 h photoperiod (PPFD 390 µmol;m–2S–1) was about threefold greater than in 8 h(500 µmol m–2 S–1); biomass accumulation perday was about fivefold greater. Increasing N from 3 to 36 mMincreased PR about 10 per cent, altered biomass partitioningamong plant parts, and increased the biomass of the plants. The NO2 form of N markedly stimulated axillary growth as comparedwith the NH4+ form. Environment or cultivar had little influenceon the duration of leaf expansion in terms of PI. Cultivarsdid not differ consistently in biomass production and allocationin the different environments. Accumulation of dry weight was measured in plant parts of meadowfescue (Festuca pratensis Huds.) that was grown at 16/11 °Cor 26/21 °C and with 20 or 60 nE cm–2 s–1 photosyntheticallyactive radiation. Plants reached anthesis about 3 weeks laterat 16/11 °C than at 26/21 °C and had then a higher proportionof dry weight in inflorescences and less in leaf blades. Growthtemperature had little effect on CO2 exchange rate (CER) butplants grown at 60 nE cm–2 s–1 had higher CER thanthose grown at 20 nE cm–2 s–1. The concentration of water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC) at similargrowth stages was usually higher at 16/11°C than at 26/21°C.High radiation also led to higher WSC in stem and leaf tissue.Root tissue changed least and WSC did not exceed 10% of dryweight during the experiment. In all tissues, when WSC was high, the fructans were distributed into a group with a high degreeof polymerization (DP) and another with a low DP. The low DPgroup included sucrose, reducing sugars and fructans up to about20 units long. An apparent threshold concentration of WSC wasnecessary for synthesis of the high DP fructans. This concentrationwas near 12% for leaf tissue, about 6% for stem base tissue, and 2.5% for root tissue. The average apparent DP of the highDP fructan group was 43 to 50 for leaf tissue, 31 to 93 forstem base tissue, and 27 to 31 for roots. These characteristicsappeared to be mostly tissue dependent with less effect fromtemperature and radiation. Laboratory studies were performed to determine the effect oftemperature, salinity, seawater sources and culture media onthe vegetative growth of clonal cultures of Gymnodinium catenatumisolated from Bahía Concepción, Mexico. Theseisolates were heterothallic and isogamous. Exponential growthrates of G. catenatum in f/2 with different selenium concentrationsand soil extract and GSe media were moderate. Maximum cell yieldswere obtained in GSe and f/2 media with selenium (10–8and 10–7 M), while in f/2 medium with soil extract cellyields were considerably lower. The highest percentage of longchains was found in f/2 media supplied with selenium (10–8M). The optimal temperature range for growth was 11.5–30°C,with the highest growth rates between 21 and 29°C. The rangeof salinity tolerated by G. catenatum changed with seawatersource. With seawater from Vineyard Sound (Massachusetts, USA),G. catenatum grew at salinities from 15 to 36, with an optimalgrowth rate obtained at salinities between 26 and 30. With seawaterfrom Bahía Concepción, this species toleratedsalinities from 25 to 40, with optimal growth at salinitiesbetween 28 and 38. Ecophysiological measurements reported hereare consistent with the environment of the bay, which has limitedinput of humic materials from runoff and high salinity and temperature. These data, when viewed with data from studies of globally distributedG. catenatum, demonstrate the ability of this species to livein a broad array of habitats.  相似文献

Optimum temperature and salinity conditions for viable hatch were studied for turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.) from the North Sea. Temperatures ranging from 6 to 22°C and salinities from 5 to 35‰ were used. Optimum conditions were observed to be between 12 and 18°C at salinities between 20 and 35‰. This contrasted with corresponding data for turbot from the southern Baltic proper, according to which survival sharply decreased in temperatures below 14°C and was high in salinities of 10 to 15‰. Thus, it is concluded that Baltic and Atlantic turbot should be considered as different races.  相似文献

Histiobalantium sp. was found regularly in the pelagic zoneof Lake Constance, FRG, over five annual cycles. Maxima of upto 6400 cells l–1 were recorded in late summer, with similarnumbers in the 0–8 and 8–20 m depth intervals. Onan annual average, the population accounted for 10–17%of the total biomass of planktonic ciliates. In the laboratory,Histiobalantium grew well on a diet of the cryptophyte Rhodomonassp. Maximum growth rates obtained in batch cultures were 0.21and 0.33 day–11 at 9 and 18°C, respectively. In situexperiments using diffusion chambers yielded positive growthrates in autumn and winter. The highest values recorded at theambient temperatures 5, 14 and 17°C were 0.17, 0.32 and0.40 day–1, respectively. Comparing these results withthe different seasonal distributions and higher measured growthrates of other ciliates from Lake Constance, we conclude thatHistiobalantium is a superior competitor at relatively low algalfood concentrations. 2Present address: Fisheries & Oceans Canada, 4160 MarineDrive, West Vancouver, BC, V7V 1N6, Canada  相似文献

Plants of the C4 sedge Cyperus longus L. were grown at 10, 20and 30 °C. An asymptotic growth curve, the Richards function, was fitted to growth data for successive leaves. The mean rateof leaf appearance was a linear function of temperature with0.014 leaves appearing per day for every 1 °C increase intemperature. The instantaneous relative rate of leaf extensionshowed a marked ontogenetic drift which was most rapid at 30°C and slowest at 10 °C. The mean absolute extensionrate for foliage had a temperature coefficient of 0.16 cm d–1° C–1 in the range from 10 to 30 °C. The durationof leaf growth was independent of leaf number at 10 and 20 °Cbut increased linearly with leaf number at 30 °C. The smalldifferences in relative growth rate at the three temperaturesresulted in large differences in foliage area produced at theend of a 30 d growth period. The final foliage areas at 20 and10 °C were 51 and 9% respectively of that at 30 °C. Cyperus longus, temperature, leaf growth, Richards function, growth analysis  相似文献

This paper reports experimental and field studies on the cyclopoidMesocyclops notius from subtropical Lake Donghu close to theYangtze river. Mesocyclops notius, a dominant crustacean zooplankterthroughout tropical Australia, was previously considered tobe endemic to Australia, but recently, Mesocyclops leuckartiin Lake Donghu was re-identified as M. notius. Laboratory cultureexperiments were conducted to reveal the effect of temperature(15, 20, 25 and 30°C) on the development, growth and reproductionof M. notius. Temperature was inversely related to developmenttimes of eggs, nauplii and copepodites, body length and physiologicallongevity of adults, and brood size. Body length and physiologicallongevity of females were greater than those of males at thesame temperature. No reproduction took place at 15°C. Productionand seasonal cycles of M. notius during 1980–1982 werestudied at two sampling stations of Lake Donghu. At the mid-lakestation, the annual production and production/biomass (P/B)ratio of M. notius varied between 6.0 and18.0 g dry wt m–2year–1 and 74.6 and 95.5, respectively. Mesocyclops notiusreached their highest density peaks in the warm months (July–October),with a maximum density of 1256 individuals l–1 at a littoralsite. No reproduction and recruitment by M. notius took placeduring the cold months (December–March) when the temperatureof the lake water was <15°C. Mesocyclops notius weremore abundant at a littoral station than at a pelagic station, possibly due to different food availability. The higher male:femalesex ratio of M. notius at the littoral station was most likelycaused by size-selective fish predation on larger females.  相似文献

The seasonal variation in abundance and development of Calanusfinmarchicus, Calanus hyperboreus and Calanus glacialis in relationto hydrography and chlorophyll (Chl) a was studied in the Arcticwaters of the East Icelandic Current to the north-east of Icelandfrom March 1995 to February 1996. The sampling was carried outat approximately monthly intervals on a transect of five stationsextending from 67°00'N, 13°55'W to 68°00'N, 12°40'W.In April, May and June, vertical distribution was also investigated.Spring warming of the surface waters began in May, with maximumtemperatures recorded in August (~5°C, mean for uppermost50 m). Below 75 m, temperature remained at <0°C throughoutthe year. The spring bloom of phytoplankton started in earlyMay and the highest Chl a concentrations were measured duringlate May to early June (~1 mg Chl a m-3). Calanus finmarchicusdominated in terms of numbers (~75%), while C. hyperboreus dominatedbiomass (~76%). Calanus glacialis occurred only in low numbers(~1%) and was only a small portion of biomass (~0.7%). The abundanceof all species was low during the winter and peaked once duringsummer: C. finmarchicus in July (~16 000 ind. m-2) and C. glacialisand C. hyperboreus in June (~370 and ~7700 ind. m-2, respectively). The biomass of C. finmarchicus had two maxima, in April (~1.9g m-2) and July (~1.5 g m-2), while C. hyperboreus peaked inJune (~12.3 g m-2). Calanus finmarchicus was estimated to spawnin early May at about the start of the spring bloom, while C.hyperboreus spawned prior to the spring bloom, in late Februaryto early March. On the basis of copepod stage distribution,C. finmarchicus was considered to have a 1-year life cycle andC. hyperboreus at least a 2-year life cycle.  相似文献
