  • 1.1. Active transport of d-glucose was shown using intestinal sac preparations, in vitro, made from two marine fish, the scup, Stenotomus versicolor and the puffer, Spheroides maculatus.
  • 2.2. Differences in absorption characteristics were evident in populations from year to year.
  • 3.3. Anaerobiotic conditions, i.e. 100 per cent nitrogen gassing of the incubation medium, inhibit the active transport of d-glucose in scup and puffer intestine.
  • 4.4. Phlorizin, 5 × 10−4 M, inhibits the active transport of d-glucose in scup intestine.
  • 5.5. Intestinal transmural glucose transport mechanisms operate well at incubation temperatures, 20°–27°C, i.e. temperatures close to habitat and holding tank temperatures, whereas movement of the sugar against a concentration gradient is interrupted at higher incubation temperatures, 29° and 30°C.
  • 6.6. Detailed comparison of procedures and results with those used by other workers in the field of in vitro intestinal absorption of poikilotherms suggests that aerobic metabolism may not be a uniformly significant energy source in intestinal active transport.

  • 1.1. Microelectrodes have been used to measure K+ activities and electrical potential differences between the perivitelline fluid (pvf) of the eggs of pike (Esox lucius) and surrounding water in a range of pH, calcium and aluminium concentrations.
  • 2.2. Potential differences between pvf and water are decreased by Ca2+ (10−3 M) while Al3+ (18 × 10−6 M) reverses the polarity of the potential difference.
  • 3.3. K+ activities in the pvf of eggs in 10−4M KCl + 10−5M NaCl are decreased by Ca2+(10−3 M).
  • 4.4. The results are discussed with reference to ion-exchange theory and chorion permeability.

  • 1.1. Brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) of a single genetic stock, and hatched at the same time, were raised under two photoperiod and two feeding regimes to obtain fish of the same age but with different sizes and photoperiod experiences. In 11 experiments over 1.5 firs, fish were gradually exposed to 32 ppt seawater for 20 days to investigate the ontogeny of salinity tolerance.
  • 2.2. Daily changes in plasma osmolarity, [Na+], [Cl], [K+], [Mg2+], thyroxine, hematocrit and gill Na+,K+-ATPase during adaptation to 10, 20 and 32 ppt were examined in one experiment.
  • 3.3. Size was the primary determinant of seawater survival (r2 = 0.77) the effect of size on seawater survival slowed after fish reached a fork length of 14 cm. The effect of age on seawater survival (r2 = 0.65) was through its covariance with size.
  • 4.4. Photoperiod affected seawater survival only through its influence on the timing of male maturation, which decreased salinity tolerance.
  • 5.5. Regulation of plasma osmolarity, [Na+], [Cl], [K2+], [Mg2+] and hematocrit in sea water increased linearly with size over the entire range of sizes (6–32 em).
  • 6.6. Gill Na+,K+-ATPase activity after 20 days in seawater decreased with increasing size of brook trout, possibly reflecting decreased demand for active ion transport in larger fish.
  • 7.7. Plasma thyroxine concentrations declined in seawater, but no definitive role of this hormone in seawater adaptation was found.
  • 8.8. Size dependent survival and osmoregulatory ability of brook trout is compared to other salmonids and a conceptual model is developed.

  • 1.1. The olfactory responses to amino acids were recorded from the bulb of the red sea bream (Chrysophyrys major) and the conger eel (Conger myriaster).
  • 2.2. The threshold concentration for l-glutamine was 10−7 M in the sea bream and below 10−8 and 10−9 M in the conger eel, and it was found that amino acids are good olfactory stimuli in both species.
  • 3.3. A comparison of the olfactory spectrum of amino acids of the sea bream with that of each of three species of freshwater fishes revealed a high similarity of spectra.

  • 1.1. The behavioural responses of the freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata to chemical gradients of sugars were investigated by means of diffusion olfactometers.
  • 2.2. The snails proved very discriminating in their responses. Thus, only nine (39.1%) of the 23 sugars tested proved to be statistically significant attractants or arrestants. None proved to be statistically significant repellents.
  • 3.3. Of all the sugars tested maltose proved to be the most potent attractant or arrestant. The lower threshold of response to this sugar lies between 5 × 10−6 and 5 × 10−7M.
  • 4.4. The results are compared with those obtained for amino and carboxylic acids and their ecological relevance is discussed.

  • 1.1. Final urine is intermittently released from the pneumostome of the pulmonate freshwater snail Lymnaea slagnalis. A technique is described to sample this fluid.
  • 2.2. The ionic composition of final urine greatly differs from that of haemolymph; Na+ and Cl are reabsorbed to a considerable degree. In lettuce fed snails K+ is excreted.
  • 3.3. The urine Na+ and Cl concentrations are about 38 and 31 mM lower, respectively, than the haemolymph concentrations, also when the latter concentrations vary.

  • 1.1. The buccal-mass responses of the freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata to sugars were investigated by means of an olfactometer.
  • 2.2. The snails proved very discriminating in their responses. Adults responded significantly to only five (12.2%) of the 41 sugars tested at 10−2 M. Juvenile conspecifics had a broader niche as they responded to eight (47%) of the 17 sugars tested.
  • 3.3. Of all the sugars tested, maltose proved to be the most potent phagostimulant.
  • 4.4. The possible mechanisms involved in the chemoreception of active sugars and the ecological relevance of the responses shown by the snails to them are discussed.

  • 1.1. Water efflux and urine production rates were measured in blue crabs acclimated to several salinities.
  • 2.2. In 100% seawater the mean rate of water efflux (31.3 ml/100g hr−1) was significantly greater than that in 50% seawater (18.9 ml/100 g hr−1.
  • 3.3. Water efflux was directly related to body weight.
  • 4.4. The mean urine production rate was significantly greater in crabs acclimated to 50% and 30% seawater (0.17 and 0.18 ml/100g hr−1) than in animals conditioned to 100% seawater (0.09 ml/100 g hr−1).
  • 5.5. The difference between theoretical net water fluxes for crabs exposed to 100% seawater and 50% seawater was similar to the difference in urine output in the same salinities, demonstrating the importance of the antennal gland in volume regulation.

  • 6.6. Relaxing effect of serotonin may be associated with elevated cAMP level and reduced cGMP level at the pharmacological but not physiological level.

  • 3.3. Nephridial perfusion experiments showed that an amino acid analogue (α-amino-iso-butyric acid, AIB) is transported by the nephidia.
  • 4.4. The transport took place across the nephridial wall owing to the presence of a carrier-mediated transport system and a diffusion system.
  • 5.5. For the carrier-mediated transport, the Vmax was 0.234 ± 0.025 nmol·min and the Km 3.715 ± 0.315mmol·l.
  • 6.6. AIB accumulated in the nephridial cells up to a maximum rate of 01.17 nmol·min.
  • 7.7. Intracellular accumulation stopped increasing when the Vmax for reabsorption was reached.
  • 8.8. These results indicate that the carrier-mediated transport of AIB is located at the apical membrane of the nephridial cell, and that AIB transport by simple diffusion takes place through the paracellular pathway.

  • 4.4. They stimulated respiration rates of the spermatozoa of Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus as well as their own species.
  • 5.5. One-half maximal concentrations of the peptides for respiratory stimulation of H. pulcherrimus spermatozoa were between 10−11 M and 10−9 M except a methionine-containing peptide which was about 10−7 M.

  • 6.6. Luidia clathrata is an osmoconformer and partial cell volume regulator within the seasonal salinity range it encounters.

  • 1.1. Two cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinases—Fraction I and II—have been isolated from chick liver soluble preparation on DEAE-cellulose.
  • 2.2. Both fractions have an apparent Km for ATP of 2 × 10−6M, are stimulated maximally by 5 × 10−8 M cyclic AMP and phosphorylate mainly basic proteins—histone and protamine.

  • 4.4. The heat-stable protein modulator inhibits the cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase activity of both fractions, but with cyclic GMP one kinase is stimulated and the other inhibited.
  • 5.5. Slight differences in histone triggered holoenzyme dissociation as well as the lack of difference between their ability for subunit reassociation do not allow to classify these isozymes as protein kinases of Type I and II, according to Corbin et al. (1975).
