  • 1.1. Digestive gland and mantle fatty acids were studied in spring and summer in the bivalve Macoma balthica off the southern coast of Finland. The presence of lipids was also examined histochemically in various clam tissues.

  • 3.3. Neutral lipid fatty acids of the digestive gland, of which palmitoleic, eicosapentaenoic and palmitic acids were predominant, were clearly distinguished from phospho- and glycolipid fatty acids.
  • 4.4. The degree of unsaturation of phospholipid fatty acids was higher in the cold season both in the digestive gland and mantle, mainly due to the titer of eicosapentaenoic acid.

  • 1.1. Trophosomes of the mosquito parasitic mermithid Romanomermis culicivorax and two strains of the blackfly parasitic mermithid Neomesomermis flumenalis contained in order of prevalence: triacylglycerols, phospholipids, sterols and sterol esters.
  • 2.2. Triacylglycerols in the trophosomes comprised a wide array of fatty acids, sterol esters a smaller variety.
  • 3.3. The degree of unsaturation of triacylglycerols and sterol esters was greater for N. flumenalis than R. culicivorax.
  • 4.4. The hemolymph of the three host species (Aedes aegypti, Prosimulium mixtum/fuscum, Simlium venustum) contained an assortment of fatty acids, with a higher degree of unsaturation in the simuliids than in the culicid.

  • 1.1. The distribution of different phospholipids and the repartition of fatty acids extracted from hemolymph of crab Carcinus maenas are analysed.
  • 2.2. The action of the temperature on the lipid composition is also determined: an increase of content of PE and a slight rise of the degree of unsaturation of fatty acids are found at lower temperatures.
  • 3.3. The specific radioactivity of total phospholipids, phosphatidyl-choline and phosphatidylethanolamine from hemolymph of Carcinus maenas is studied from two radioactive precursors (32Phosphorus and 3H]ethanolamine). Results suggested that the conversion of PE into PC by methylation could take place in hepatopancreas of Carcinus maenas.
  • 4.4. The specific radioactivity of phospholipids from these two same radioactive compounds is increased following a variation in the environmental temperature.
  • 5.5. The composition of hemolymph lipids could be a direct reflection of the lipid metabolism of the hepatopancreas and that the temperature alters the rate of the phospholipid exchange between hepatopancreas and hemolymph.
  • 6.6. It is suggested that these lipid alterations occur in order to permit crab Carcinus maenas to support large changes in environmental temperatures.

  • 1.1. Two columnar cacti in the Sonoran Desert, agria and organpipe, contain medium chain (C8−C12) fatty acids.
  • 2.2. Necrotic tissues of these cacti serve as feeding and breeding substrates for Drosophila mojavensis but not D. nigrospiracula.
  • 3.3. Results show that capric and lauric acids are the predominant fatty acids of both cacti.
  • 4.4. Fatty acid chain length exhibits a differential effect on larval viability with caprylic acid (Q) having the greatest and myristic acid (C14) having the least effect.
  • 5.5. Drosophila mojavensis is more tolerant of free fatty acids than D. nigrospiracula, and this partly explains the ability of D. mojavensis to utilize agria and organpipe cacti.

  • 1.1. The net absorption of protein, fatty acids, calcium and phosphate along the small intestine of the turkey (Meleagris gallopovo) was evaluated with the aid of 91Y as a reference substance.

  • 3.3. Exposing warm-adapted Cyclops vicinus and Eudiaptomus gracilis to 5°C in laboratory brought about an increase in the phospholipid docosahexaenoic acid level from 10 to 24%.

  • 2.2. Biological marker compounds detected within animal gut content material were used to recognize dietary sources and then utilized by community members.
  • 3.3. Both H. melanochir and N. integrifons have been shown to ingest and to varying degrees incorporate seagrass lipid material, thus further confirming the importance of seagrass carbon in the Corner Inlet environment.
  • 4.4. The southern sea garfish H. melanochir is observed to remove C18 PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids) from ingested seagrass material.
  • 5.5. Seagrass sterols are altered during incorporation into the lipids of this fish.
  • 6.6. Lipid-rich digestive juices play a role in the digestive processes of all three animals.
  • 7.7. Components tentatively identified as (NMI) (non-methylene interrupted) fatty acids have been detected in the lipids of the garfish H. melanochir and the crab N. integrifons.
  • 8.8. The fecal material of all three animals represent possible sources of these lipids (NMI acids) in Corner Inlet sediments.
  • 9.9. Based on lipid compositional data, N. integrifons feeds on Posidonia australis detritus and associated epiphyte material.
  • 10.10. The removal of both plant and epibiota cellular lipids along the digestive tract of the crab was observed, although structural components such as long chain mono- and α,ω-dicarboxylic acids, which have been previously recognized as seagrass marker lipids are not directly absorbed.

  • 1.1. Crude digestive gland extract (DGE) of 5 species of marine bivalve mollusc had glycosidase activity against lipopolysaccharides (LPS) of gram-negative bacteria.
  • 2.2. Most of these extracts, after ammonium sulphate precipitation, had higher glycosidase activity than commercial Helix pomatia gut juice.
  • 3.3. Inorganic phosphate was also released from LPS by the various DGE but the lipid moiety of LPS appeared to be resistant to attack except by a DGE from Cerastoderma edule, which released small quantities of only non-hydroxylated fatty acids.
