  • 1.1. Crayfish subjected to constant darkness and temperature displayed an electroretinographic circadian rhythm with both non-polarized and polarized light stimuli.
  • 2.2. In the ERG circadian rhythm associated with polarized light there was an observed reduction in period and increment in both amplitude and activity: rest ratio.
  • 3.3. The change from non-polarized to polarized light also produced phase advances or delays in the ERG circadian rhythm depending on the circadian time when the change was introduced.
  • 4.4. Separate recording of HI and HII ERG components showed that HII is always less conspicuous and more easily saturable than HI circadian rhythm.
  • 5.5. These results support that: (a) the detection of polarized light contributes to extend the differences between night and day; (b) the two structures involved in the generation of HI and HII ERG components, i.e. the rhabdom and the retinular cell, operate as two independent elements of the circadian system responsible of ERG circadian rhythm.

  • 1.1. Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) exposed to experimental temperatures of 12, 18, 24, 30 or 36°C for a 4-week period were used to investigate the effect of temperature acclimation on the frequency of opercular movement (FOM), growth and cytochrome c oxidase (CCO) activity in heart, liver and muscle.
  • 2.2. An exponential relationship between FOM and temperature after the first week (1010 =1.76) disappeared after the second week.
  • 3.3. The initially high FOM at temperatures of 30 or 36°C and the low FOM at 18 or 12°C changed over 4 weeks to approach the FOM of fish at 24°C.
  • 4.4. This change in the relationship of FOM to temperature from highly dependent to independent appeared to be thermal compensation.
  • 5.5. Heart and liver CCO activities were significantly affected by temperature, with the lowest activity at the approximate optimum temperature for growth, 24°C.
  • 6.6. Highest CCO activities for heart and liver occurred at both the highest and lowest temperatures.
  • 7.7. Among the three tissues, heart CCO activity was generally the highest and most affected by acclimation temperature.
  • 8.8. Muscle tissue had the lowest CCO activity and was unaffected by temperature.
  • 9.9. The high CCO activity at a cold acclimation of temperature 12°C was probably due to thermal compensation and the high activity at 36°C may have been a result of thermal stress.

  • 1.1. The oxygen consumption by P. californiensis postlarvae (mean wt = 0.38 g) was determined at five different temperatures and four salinities.
  • 2.2. The O2 in each chamber was recorded at 10 min intervals for 1 hr. The time course of oxygen depletion was independent of O2 concentration down to 1.6 mg/l.
  • 3.3. Oxygen consumption increased with temperature from 0.0045 mg/g/min at 19°C, to 0.0142 mg/g/min at 35°C. The thermal coefficient (Q10) indicated a very high sensitivity of the postlarvae to temperature variations at 19–23°C.
  • 4.4. The results show that oxygen consumption significantly depends on temperature (P < 0.001) while salinity has only a marginal effect.

  • 1.1. Fundamental chitin digestion characteristics of Crassostrea virginica crystalline style were investigated.

  • 3.3. Brief electrical optic nerve stimulation (2 Hz, 2 min) also increases the ERG and this effect also lasts a long period of time (0.5–2 hr).
  • 4.4. Our results suggest that serotonin increases the response of photoreceptor cells to light and that efferent optic nerve activity may modulate photosensitivity through release of serotonin in the eye.

  • 2.2. The routine oxygen consumption showed a strong circadian rhythm with the fish being mainly active during the light period.

  • 1.1. Arginase, ornithine decarboxylase and S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase are active in both retina and brain. Activity is higher in cerebellum than in the cerebral hemispheres and optical lobes.

  • 1.1. Biliverdin reductase from the liver of eel, Anguilla japonica was characterized and purified with a novel enzymatic staining method on polyacrylamide electrophoretic gel.
  • 2.2. This enzyme could use both NADPH and NADH as coenzyme. The Km of NADPH was 5.2 μM, while that of NADH was 5.50 μM.
  • 3.3. The optimum reaction pH for using HADPH as coenzyme was 5.3. That for NADH was 6.1. The optimum reaction temperature is 37°C.
  • 4.4. When NADPH was used as coenzyme, the Km of biliverdin was 0.6 μM. When NADH was used as coenzyme, the Km of biliverdin was 7.0 μM.
  • 5.5. The activity of the enzyme was inhibited by the concentration of biliverdin. Also, the potency of the enzyme was much less than that of the analogous enzyme isolated from mammals.
  • 6.6. This is a fairly stable enzyme with a mol. wt around 67,000. Its estimated pI was pH 3.5–4.0.
  • 7.7. This is the first time biliverdin reductase has been isolated and characterized from a vertebrate other than mammals. The property of it is quite different from that of mammals.

  • 1.1. The decarboxylation of uroporphyrinogens I and III by porphyrinogen carboxy-lyase (EC 4.1.1.37) in mouse liver supernatant was compared in relation to substrate concentrations.
  • 2.2. In this species uroporphyrinogen III was the best substrate judging by the criteria of Km/Vmax (estimated for total porphyrinogens) and was converted into coproporphyrinogen faster than its series I isomer.
  • 3.3. The difference between the two isomers was mainly due to the first decarboxylation.
  • 4.4. This difference was confirmed by calculation of the Hill coefficient and of Lineweaver-Burk plot which suggested that isomer I induced negative cooperativity in the active centre of the enzyme.
  • 5.5. After treatment with a porphyrogenic dose of TCDD (25 μg/kg/week for 9 weeks) differences between uroporphyrinogen I and III as substrate were maintained.
  • 6.6. In addition treatment reduced Vmax and Km (estimated for total porphyrinogens) of liver porphyrinogen carboxy-lyase to about half control values for both isomers.
  • 7.7. Vmax was reduced mainly because of the formation of smaller amounts of all products of decarboxylation, and Km because more heptaporphyrinogen was formed than coproporphyrinogen.
  • 8.8. Values of the Hill coefficient and Lineweaver-Burk plots suggested TCDD induced altered substrate affinity for isomer III too.
  • 9.9. Treatment with TCDD did not affect the decarboxylation of uroporphyrinogen III by RBC porphyrinogen carboxy-lyase, estimated from Km and Vmax for total porphyrinogens formed.
