Laparoscopic repair of an umbilical hernia in a Western chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus) rescued in Sierra Leone

Laparoscopic umbilical hernia repair was performed in an adult female Western chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus) in a rescue centre in Sierra Leone. Biological mesh and laparoscopic spiral tacks via three 5 mm laparoscopy ports were used to close a 4 cm hernia. The chimpanzee recovered quickly and the hernia did not recur.     

常规腹腔镜器械下经脐单孔腹腔镜胆囊切除术

目的:前瞻性分析常规腹腔镜器械下的经脐单孔腹腔镜胆囊切除术.方法:2009年3月至2009年7月,入选18例胆囊疾病患者行经脐单孔腹腔镜胆囊切除术.该手术使用常规腹腔镜器械及经脐部同一小切口的三个穿刺套管.结果:18例患者(男性5人,女性13人)均没有中转为常规多孔腹腔镜或开放手术.患者平均年龄39岁(25-53岁),平均手术时间69 min(45-115 min).无明显失血或并发症发生.患者平均术后住院天数为1.7天(1-3天).术后患者满意度为100％.术后2周,患者脐部切口几乎不可见.结论:常规腹腔镜器械下经脐单孔腹腔镜胆囊切除术是可行的.它能够在没有专门器械及额外费用的情况下实施.     

Laparoscopic nephrectomy.

Since the first clinical operation in June 1990 laparoscopic nephrectomy for benign renal disease has become widely accepted. Although the laparoscopic operation takes much longer than open surgery, there are considerable reductions in the length of postoperative hospital stay and the time taken to return to normal activities and to full recovery. Major complications were relatively common in early operations, but with more experience morbidity has been reduced. Laparoscopic nephrectomy for malignant renal disease is still controversial, largely because of the fear of release of malignant tissue into the abdominal cavity during the morcellation and retrieval of the diseased kidney. To prevent this, the kidney is removed intact through a 5-7 cm incision. Long term follow up is needed, however, before we will know whether the laparoscopic procedure is effective in preventing recurrence of cancer. New developments have improved various technical aspects of the operation, but stringent assessment of new techniques is necessary so that the medical community can decide which procedures should become routine practice.     

Recombinational DNA repair: the ignored repair systems

The recent finding of a role for the recA gene in DNA replication restart does not negate previous data showing the existence of recA-dependent recombinational DNA repair, which occurs when there are two DNA duplexes present, as in the case for recA-dependent excision repair, for postreplication repair (i.e., the repair of DNA daughter-strand gaps), and for the repair of DNA double-strand breaks. Recombinational DNA repair is critical for the survival of damaged cells.
