  • 1 To test predictions of the river habitat templet and the patch dynamics concept, trends in species traits and species richness of aquatic beetles were related to the spatial-temporal variability of eighteen habitat types in the alluvial floodplain of the French Upper Rhône River. One hundred and twenty species of beetles were used in this analysis.
  • 2 The basic information was obtained either from the literature (for most of the species traits) or from observations made at approximately 500 sampling sites in the Brégnier-Cordon and Jons sections over the past 19 years (for habitat utilization). This information was structured by a fuzzy coding technique and examined by ordination analyses.
  • 3 Analyses of the relationships among nineteen species traits revealed a clear distinction according to traits such as body form (for adults), functional feeding type and food (adults and larvae), attachment to the substrate and dissemination potential (adults and larvae), and patterns of aquatic and/or terrestrial life of adults and larvae. Species traits such as number of descendants per reproductive cycle, and number of reproductive cycles per year or per individual showed less contrast, because these traits are rather homogeneous in aquatic beetles.
  • 4 Analyses of the habitat utilization by the aquatic beetles revealed a vertical gradient that separates interstitial from superficial habitats, and a transverse gradient for the superficial habitats, which extends from the main channel towards permanent oxbow lakes and temporary waters.
  • 5 The significant relationship betweeen species traits and habitat utilization demonstrates that most beetle species use a particular set of habitat types with a particular set of species trait modalities.
  • 6 Species traits of aquatic beetles are homogeneous but evidently very successful and are adapted to many potential conditions of spatial–temporal variability. Because of this homogeneity, observations on aquatic beetles do not support trends of traits in the framework of spatial–temporal variability predicted from the river habitat templet.
  • 7 The observed species richness of aquatic beetles is low in habitat types with a low spatial–temporal variability, increases as spatial variability increases, and tends to be highest at intermediate temporal variability. This pattern matches predictions of the patch dynamics concept.

Variation in the abundance and distribution of two species of mangrove littorinid was investigated using a nested sampling design at different spatial scales, in the two dominant seasons, in Hong Kong. The abundance of Littoraria melanostoma, which was less abundant than L. ardouiniana, showed large-scale spatial variation whilst abundance of L. ardouiniana varied on both large and smaller spatial scales and interacted with seasons, indicating that the abundance of this species varied between mangroves in summer and winter. Small-scale variation suggested a patchy distribution of littorinids within a mangrove, whilst the large-scale variation might reflect changes in physical factors possibly associated with habitat fragmentation. Investigation of the vertical distribution of the littorinids on the mangrove trees revealed that L. melanostoma were located at a lower overall level than L. ardouiniana. This zonation pattern may be a result of the morphological differences of the two species, as L. melanostoma has a thick shell, whilst L. ardouiniana has a thinner, but colour polymorphic shell. Both species of mangrove littorinid showed patchy distributions at a variety of scales and these patterns highlight the importance of using a hierarchical sampling approach when investigating spatially fragmented habitats.  相似文献

  • 1 The development of integrated pest management strategies requires that the semi‐natural habitats scattered across the landscape are taken into account. Particular determinants of insect pest abundance in overwintering habitats just before they migrate onto crops appear to be poorly known and of crucial importance for understanding patterns of crop colonization and pest population dynamics at the landscape scale.
  • 2 The emergence of pollen beetle Meligethes aeneus F. was studied in grassland, woodland edge and woodland interior over a 3‐year survey in France using macro‐emergence traps. A suite of variables at the local and the landscape scale was assessed for each trap, aiming to identify potential relevant habitat indicators. The effects of habitat characteristics were evaluated using partial least square regressions.
  • 3 It was found that M. aeneus can overwinter in all types of habitat but that particular habitat characteristics at the local and landscape scales may explain their abundance in overwintering sites more than the types of habitat: relative altitude, litter thickness, soil moisture and proximity to the previous year's oilseed rape fields appear to be positively correlated with abundance of adults over the 3 years.
  • 4 Hence, the abundance of emerged pollen beetles depends on both the landscape configuration of the previous year's oilseed rape fields around overwintering sites and local habitat characteristics. Landscape configuration may determine population flow towards overwintering sites in the late summer, and local habitat characteristics may influence survival rates during the winter. The findings of the present study provide valuable insight into the role of semi‐natural habitats as a source of pests, patterns of crop colonization in the spring, and the influence of landscape on pollen beetle abundance.

  1. The round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) is among the fastest-spreading introduced aquatic species in North America and is radiating inland from the Great Lakes into freshwater ecosystems across the landscape. Predicting and managing the impacts of round gobies requires information on the factors influencing their distribution in habitats along the invasion front, yet this information is not available for many recently invaded ecosystems. We evaluated the seasonal habitat use and biomass of round gobies in an inland temperate lake to define the spatiotemporal scope of biological interactions at the leading edge of the round goby invasion.
  2. Using novel statistical approaches, we combined hierarchical models that control for imperfect species detection with flexible smooth terms to describe non-linear relationships between round goby abundance and environmental gradients. Subsequently, we generated accurate detection-corrected estimates of the standing stock biomass of round gobies.
  3. Our results show seasonally differentiated habitat niches, where suitable round goby habitat in summer months is restricted to shallow depths (<18.4 m) with a mixture of vegetative and mussel cover. We found high round goby biomass of 122 kg/ha in occupied habitats during the summer, with a total lake-wide biomass of 766,000 kg. In winter, round gobies migrate to deep offshore habitats and disperse, dramatically altering their scope for biological interactions with resident aquatic species across summer and winter seasons.
  4. The results of this study indicate that the scope of biological interactions in inland lakes may be seasonally variable, with potential for high round goby biomass in shallow lakes or at the periphery of deep lakes in the summer months. Such shallow-water habitats may therefore present higher risk of ecological impacts from round gobies in invaded lentic ecosystems. As round gobies expand inland, consideration of seasonal habitat use will be an important factor in predicting the impacts of this pervasive invader.

  1. Movement behaviours of adult aquatic insects can produce distinct spatial distribution patterns. Studies of adult abundance with distance away from water bodies are common and may invoke flight capability to explain species differences. In contrast, distribution patterns along river channels are poorly described, but are no less important for understanding population dynamics. Longitudinal patterns in adult abundance along short river lengths may differ between sexes and at different life stage transitions between aquatic and terrestrial environments, i.e. at emergence and oviposition. Flight capability is unlikely to influence longitudinal patterns created at emergence, but may influence local abundances of mature females seeking to lay eggs. We tested hypotheses about how local abundances of mature females might differ according to oviposition habits and flight capability.
  2. We surveyed abundances of mature female caddisflies at adjacent riffle–pool pairs along short river lengths with homogeneous riparian cover. Our survey included nine species in three families (Hydrobiosidae, Leptoceridae, Hydropsychidae), which encompassed multiple different oviposition habits and a range of wing sizes and shapes. Several of the species oviposit preferentially in riffles. Accordingly, we tested for differences in female abundance between channel units (adjacent riffle–pool pairs). We also tested whether females attained higher abundances in some places along channels than others (i.e. over larger spatial scales and regardless of channel unit) which imply movements along the channel and aggregation in some locations. Wing morphology was used as a proxy measure of flight capability and included measures of wing span, area, aspect ratio and the second moment of wing area.
  3. Three distinctly different distribution patterns of mature female caddisflies were identified. The abundance of three species varied over larger scales only (multiple channel units). Six species that oviposit preferentially in riffles had higher female abundances at riffles than pools, but for only one did abundances also vary over larger scales. There was no association between these different patterns and measures of wing morphology, after removing metrics that were correlated and that differed systematically between taxonomic families. However, we could not reject the hypothesis that some aspect of flight behaviour may have contributed to observed patterns.
  4. The diverse but distinct distributions of mature female caddisflies we observed along short channel lengths are novel and suggest that species differ in their propensity for movement along streams, which could have consequences for local densities of eggs and juveniles in the aquatic environment. The degree to which population sizes are coupled across the terrestrial-to-aquatic transition is rarely investigated in aquatic insects and may provide fresh insight into sources of spatial variation within populations. Similarly, a more nuanced approach to research on the flight of aquatic insects, including age- and sex-specific phenomena, may provide greater insight into the diverse ecological functions and consequences of movement.

  1. Inflorescences of some Curcuma and Zingiber (Zingiberaceae) in tropical Asia provide an unique aquatic habitat being discrete, small, and made of numerous smaller compartments (the bracts).
  2. The aquatic community in inflorescences of Curcuma in northern Thailand was composed of immature Diptera, of which the biting midge Dasyhelea and the mosquito Armigeres theobaldi were the commonest. No important competitors, predators or pathogenic parasites for the mosquito were confirmed.
  3. Inter-inflorescence distribution of the mosquito was contagious. Within each inflorescence, the fourth-instar larvae or pupae usually occupied bracts singly.
  4. The k-value analysis detected density-dependent mortality due to contest competition in the mosquito larvae.
  5. Variations in the larval and pupal mosquito size were density-independent and remarkably small as compared with size variations known for other mosquitoes.
  6. These population attributes (large density-dependent mortality with density-independent, minimally variable individual size) appear unique among mosquitoes, arising from conspecific killing, efficient foraging (inter-bract movement by crawl and single occupation of bracts), and availability of host plant tissues as supplementary food.
  7. A simple population model suggested that a small proportion of adult females lay eggs.

The zooxanthellate mangrove jellyfish Cassiopea sp. represents a prominent invasive species and a potential bioindicator for nutrient monitoring in coral reefs. However, information about its spatial distribution in combination with abundance, habitat specificity and life cycle elements is barely available. This study, therefore, presents the results of field surveys conducted within four different benthic habitat types (coral reef, seagrass meadow, reef-sand transition and sand flat) in the Northern Red Sea. Cassiopea sp. exhibited a highly patchy distribution within the entire study area with mean abundance of 1.6 ± 0.3 animals m−2 and benthic coverage of 3.2%. Within coral reef habitats, maximum abundance of up to 31 animals m−2 and benthic coverage of up to 20% were detected. Additionally, this study revealed that 65% of all observed Cassiopea specimens were associated with the commensalistic crustacean mysid Idiomysis tsurnamali. Cassiopea abundance and size as well as association patterns with mysids differed between most of the surveyed habitats. In summary, the findings of the present study (1) characterize Cassiopea as one of the key organisms in investigated benthic habitats, (2) indicate active habitat selection by the jellyfish and (3) may hint to an unexplored life cycle of Cassiopea with central role of seagrass meadows providing cues for larval settlement and metamorphosis in the absence of mangroves.  相似文献

  1. Bees are prolific, vital pollinators in agricultural and natural settings, but some taxa are declining. Surveying bees is crucial to understand the needs of these taxa; however, we lack a fine-grained understanding of assemblages associated with different sampling methods that would enable us to analyse data range-wide.
  2. Here we examine the difference in abundance and richness of bees (bee bowls and vane traps only) and bumble bees (genus Bombus; bee bowls, blue vane traps and target netting) sampled with these methods from mixed-grass prairie to alpine habitats in Wyoming, USA.
  3. We collected four times more bees and twice as many genera of bees in vane traps than bee bowls. Vane traps captured more individuals of abundant genera than bee bowls.
  4. Bombus species abundance did not vary between vane traps and target netting; however, richness was higher in vane traps. Bee bowls captured few Bombus species.
  5. Overall, we recommend using vane traps to sample most bees, and a combination of vane traps and target netting to collect bumble bees. We evaluated how three sampling techniques perform when surveying for wild bees, which will aid in identifying declining species as well as monitoring species of conservation concern.

In order to better determine the currentstatus of desert pupfish populations (Cyprinodon macularius macularius) in the LowerColorado River Basin of Mexico, bimonthly fishsampling and habitat evaluations were carriedout from September 1996 to August 1997 in sixlocalities of Baja California and Sonora.Desert pupfish were collected using minnowseines and traps. Four sampling sites are inSonora, in shallow marginal habitats of theCiénega Santa Clara (Hunters' Camp, Outletof the Welton-Mohawk channel, El Doctor andFlor del Desierto) and two are in BajaCalifornia (Cerro Prieto and streams south ofCerro Prieto). The most abundant fish speciessampled was native desert pupfish (C.macularius, 59%) followed by sailfin molly(Poecilia latipinna, 19%), redbellytilapia (Tilapia cf. zilli, 10%) and western mosquito fish (Gambusiaaffinis, 7%). Significant temporalfluctuations in distribution and abundance ofdesert pupfish populations, as previouslyreported for these populations, was againdocumented. The main anthropogenic factorsaffecting distribution and abundance of desertpupfish populations in the Mexican portion ofthe Lower Colorado River Basin are progressivealteration of aquatic and riparian habitats, aswell as presence of exotic fishes that havecaused the displacement or elimination ofnative fish populations. Both habitat andpresence of the desert pupfish populations inthe study area are controlled by theperiodicity, quality and volume of dischargesinto the Mexican portion of the basin from theUnited States.  相似文献

  1. Farmland habitats comprise an arrangement of cropped, uncropped and natural vegetation among the farms. Despite the differences in these habitats' features, generalist highly mobile predators are more likely to explore them in time and space.
  2. We investigated the spatiotemporal dynamics of the species of Dolichopodidae (Diptera) in organic vegetable farms because they are one of the most abundant generalist highly mobile predators in Brazilian agroecosystems.
  3. We simultaneously sampled the abundance of Condylostylus Bigot and Chrysotus Loew adults (both Dolichopodidae) in the crop, fallow areas, agroforests and forest fragments within five organic farms for 2 years.
  4. Predators preferred open-field habitats to agroforests and forest fragments. Probably, open-field habitats present more opportunities to prey foraging, resulting in higher population densities.
  5. To the extent that abiotic conditions become more restrictive during the dry season, agroforests and forests act as breeding sites and shelter, thereby maintaining the predators' populations in the overall farmland habitat.
  6. Both predatory genera occupy habitats with distinct features across time, forming a dynamic and contiguous population unit within the farm. Therefore, conservation biological control strategies in organic crops should consider the role of agroforests and forest fragments in species conservation beyond the plot level.

In many stage-structured species, different life stages often occupy separate spatial niches in a heterogeneous environment. Life stages of the giant flour beetle Tribolium brevicornis (Leconte), in particular adults and pupae, occupy different locations in a homogeneous habitat. This unique spatial pattern does not occur in the well-studied stored grain pests T. castaneum (Herbst) and T. confusum (Duval). We propose density dependent dispersal as a causal mechanism for this spatial pattern. We model and explore the spatial dynamics of T. brevicornis with a set of four density dependent integrodifference and difference equations. The spatial model exhibits multiple attractors: a spatially uniform attractor and a patchy attractor with pupae and adults spatially separated. The model attractors are consistent with experimental observations.  相似文献

Distributions of mosquito larvae likely are a consequence of multiple factors, although two commonly studied factors (quality of the larval environment and the terrestrial matrix in which these habitats reside) have rarely and simultaneously been varied in the field to understand distributions of larvae. We monitored aquatic containers of two leaf detritus levels within a forest, prairie, and industrial habitat across five months to understand the temporal and spatial colonization of aquatic invertebrates in Northcentral Illinois, USA. Data were collected monthly on mosquito populations and the composition of other invertebrates colonizing containers. Overall, six species of mosquitoes colonized containers, with Culex restuans and Aedes triseriatus having the highest relative abundances. There were strong seasonal abundance patterns for these two mosquito species, with the dominant species changing over time in the forest habitat. The responses of other mosquito taxa were more variable, with abundances reflective of either the terrestrial matrix or larval habitat quality. High detritus containers supported the highest abundances of most species encountered, regardless of habitat. Non-mosquito taxa were less common numerically, but analyses suggested that some taxa, such as syrphid larvae, often co-occurred with mosquitoes. Nested subset analysis indicated communities were strongly nested, and that both habitat type and detritus level were important in explaining nested patterns of aquatic invertebrates. Our data show that both the larval habitat and the surrounding terrestrial matrix shape patterns of container mosquitoes, and that other container invertebrates vary in similar ways as mosquitoes. 1. Highlands are ideal research areas for improving our understanding of the influence of ecological factors on the diversity and spatial patterns of natural species. Elevation-driven physical and environmental isolation greatly affect the evolution of plants. The mechanisms and essential drivers underlying these processes may differ among research scales, habitats and landscapes. Wetlands are important elements of the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau, which is the highest plateau in the world, and these habitats harbour high aquatic organismal diversity. However, how the environments shape the genetic variation and structure of hydrophilous plants is poorly understood.
  2. Using microsatellite markers and a chloroplast fragment, we quantified the genetic diversity and spatial genetic pattern of Stuckenia filiformis, one of the most widespread aquatic plants on the plateau. The relative contributions of geography, climate and local conditions to intra- and interpopulation variation were estimated. The results showed that intrapopulation genetic variation of the plant is moderate to high and not constrained by high-altitude environments. Topographical isolation mainly contributes to the genetic structure of S. filiformis, as inferred by simple sequence repeats and chloroplast DNA data. Significant effects of environmental variables on the spatial genetic patterns of this freshwater species were also suggested by landscape genetic analysis.
  3. Infrequent long-distance dispersal, sexual recruitment and annual growth are probably important for the maintenance and distribution of this variation. Our findings imply a combined effect of geography and elevation-driven environmental heterogeneity on the evolution of aquatic organisms in highlands.

  1. Understanding drivers of variation and trends in biodiversity change is a general scientific challenge, but also crucial for conservation and management. Previous research shows that patterns of increase and decrease are not always consistent at different spatial scales, calling for approaches combining the latter. We here explore the idea that functional traits of species may help explaining divergent population trends.
  2. Complementing a previous community level study, we here analyse data about breeding waterbirds on 58 wetlands in boreal Fennoscandia, covering gradients in latitude as well as trophic status. We used linear mixed models to address how change in local abundance over 25 years in 25 waterbird species are associated with life history traits, diet, distribution, breeding phenology, and habitat affinity.
  3. Mean abundance increased in 10 species from 1990/1991 to 2016, whereas it decreased in 15 species. Local population increases were associated with species that are early breeders and have small clutches, an affinity for luxurious wetlands, an herbivorous diet, and a wide breeding range rather than a southern distribution. Local decreases, by contrast, were associated with species having large clutches and invertivorous diet, as well as being late breeders and less confined to luxurious wetlands. The three species occurring on the highest number of wetlands all decreased in mean abundance.
  4. The fact that early breeders have done better than late fits well with previous research about adaptability to climate change, that is, response to earlier springs. We found only limited support for the idea that life history traits are good predictors of wetland level population change. Instead, diet turned out to be a strong candidate for an important driver of population change, as supported by a general decrease of invertivores and a concomitant increase of large herbivores.
  5. In a wider perspective, future research needs to address whether population growth of large-bodied aquatic herbivores affects abundance of co-occurring invertivorous species, and if so, if this is due to habitat alteration, or to interference or exploitative competition.

1. Several species with complex life‐history traits such as amphibians and insects with aquatic immature stages and terrestrial adults avoid ovipositing in pools containing larvivorous fish. This avoidance response was assumed to be a general one for most fish species. 2. The generality of ovipositing Culex to the presence of three, widespread larvivorous fish species was tested in a set of field experiments with artificial oviposition pools using caged fish. 3. Larval performance was further examined under actual predation by these three fish species. 4. Results show that ovipositing females responded strongly to the presence of caged mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis, while showing no significant response to the presence of caged green sunfish, Lepomis cyanellus, or the pirate perch, Aphredoderus sayanus. All three fish species consumed similar amounts of larvae. 5. This is the first example of species‐specific response differences to predators during mosquito oviposition habitat selection. These results point to the existence of predator‐released kairomones affecting mosquito behaviour. These kairomones may either be species‐specific or vary in concentration among fish, and probably have an important role in the understanding of mosquito spatial distribution.  相似文献

  1. The expansion of intensive agriculture has severely altered landscapes, a process that has been aggravated by the increase of greenhouse agriculture. However, few studies have considered the combined effects of habitat loss/degradation and greenhouse farming on insect visitors to native plants.
  2. We analysed how habitat loss/degradation and greenhouse farming are related to the composition, abundance, and richness of the insect assemblages visiting flowers in a semiarid keystone shrub (Ziziphus lotus) in southeast Spain, home to Europe's largest area of greenhouses. We studied 21 populations distributed across a gradient of greenhouse intensification and habitat loss.
  3. The composition, abundance, and richness of the Ziziphus insect assemblage substantially varied between populations and were differently affected by natural habitat-remnant and landscape degradation and population isolation.
  4. Insect abundance was negatively affected by habitat loss at population level but positively affected at individual Ziziphus scale. Honey-bee relative abundance increased in highly degraded landscapes and isolated populations, being positively associated with hoverflies and negatively with ants and bee-flies. Wild bees, carrion flies, and wasps remain neutral along the degradation axes. Insect visitor abundance per plant affected positively the flower visitation rate, which was also favoured by the relative abundance of honey bees, wild bees, and hoverflies. Species richness was not influenced by anthropogenic degradation, and did not affect flower visitation rate.
  5. Our results highlight the fragility of wild pollinator communities to landscape and habitat degradation, and the need to regulate intensive farming practices to preserve wild insect pollinator assemblages in semiarid habitats.
