There are 10,091 km2 of peatlands in Estonia and human activities may have changed the role of northern peatlands from global sinks to global sources of carbon. The aim of this work was to explain the changes in organic carbon exports from eleven Estonian rivers in the period 1992–2007 in terms of land use change, climate change quantified by trends in stream-water discharge and hydrological droughts and reductions in atmospheric sulfate quantified by change in water chemistry. Direct TOC (total organic carbon) measurements had been initiated in 1998. We used CODKMnO4 (permanganate oxygen consumed) as its surrogate for the whole time span (Spearman’s determination coefficient in six small northern Estonian rivers 0.95 > ρ2 > 0.72; p < 0.01). The Mann–Kendall test revealed significant trends in the TOC proxy in five small rivers in northern Estonia (M–K stat > 2.35; p < 0.05). The trends in the eleven investigated streams correlated closely with the increased 28 ratios of drought days (Spearman’s ρ2 = 0.68; p < 0.01). The correlations with land use compositions, decreases in water discharges and SO4 2? concentrations were insignificant (p > 0.05). We conclude that the main factor in the increase of organic carbon export is the deepening of droughts driven by climate change, magnified by man-made drainage.  相似文献

Reptiles are ectothermic amniotes in a world dominated by endotherms. Reptiles originated more than 300 million years ago and they often dwell in polluted environments which may expose them to pathogenic micro-organisms, radiation and/or heavy metals. Reptiles also possess greater longevity and may live much longer than similar-sized land mammals, for example, turtles, tortoises, crocodiles and tuatara are long-lived reptiles living up to 100 years or more. Many recent studies have emphasized the pivotal role of the gut microbiome on its host; thus, we postulated that reptilian gut microbiome and/or its metabolites and the interplay with their robust immune system may contribute to their longevity and overall hardiness. Herein, we discuss the composition of the reptilian gut microbiome, immune system–gut microbiome cross-talk, antimicrobial peptides, reptilian resistance to infectious diseases and cancer, ageing, as well the current knowledge of the genome and epigenome of these remarkable species. Preliminary studies have demonstrated that microbial gut flora of reptiles such as crocodiles, tortoises, water monitor lizard and python exhibit remarkable anticancer and antibacterial properties, as well as comprise novel gut bacterial metabolites and antimicrobial peptides. The underlying mechanisms between the gut microbiome and the immune system may hold clues to developing new therapies overall for health, and possible extrapolation to exploit the ancient defence systems of reptiles for Homo sapiens benefit.  相似文献

Many predator–prey systems are found in environments with a predominantly unidirectional flow such as streams and rivers. Alterations of natural flow regimes (e.g., due to human management or global warming) put biological populations at risk. The aim of this paper is to devise a simple method that links flow speeds (currents) with population retention (persistence) and wash-out (extinction). We consider systems of prey and specialist, as well as generalist, predators, for which we distinguish the following flow speed scenarios: (a) coexistence, (b) persistence of prey only or (c) predators only (provided they are generalists), and (d) extinction of both populations. The method is based on a reaction–advection–diffusion model and traveling wave speed approximations. We show that this approach matches well spread rates observed in numerical simulations. The results from this paper can provide a useful tool in the assessment of instream flow needs, estimating the flow speed necessary for preserving riverine populations.  相似文献

The corneocyte layers forming the upper surface of mammalian skin are embedded in a lamellar-membrane matrix which repels harmful molecules while retaining solutes from subcutaneous tissues. Only certain bacterial and fungal taxa colonize skin surfaces. They have ways to use epidermal lipids as nutrients while resisting antimicrobial fatty acids. Skin microorganisms release lipophilic microbe-associated molecular pattern (MAMP) molecules which are largely retained by the epidermal lipid barrier. Skin barrier defects, as in atopic dermatitis, impair lamellar-membrane integrity, resulting in altered skin microbiomes, which then include the pathogen Staphylococcus aureus. The resulting increased penetration of MAMPs and toxins promotes skin inflammation. Elucidating how microorganisms manipulate the epidermal lipid barrier will be key for better ways of preventing inflammatory skin disorders.  相似文献

Piglet mortality in outdoor production systems varies across the year, and a reason for this variation could be fluctuations in hut climate, as ambient temperature might influence piglet survival, both directly and indirectly. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to investigate the impact of farrowing hut climate and year variation on stillbirth and liveborn mortality. A large-scale observational study was conducted at five commercial organic pig-producing herds in Denmark from June 2015 to August 2016. Both year variation (F3,635=4.40, P=0.004) and farrowing hut temperature (F2,511=6.46, P=0.002) affected the rate of stillbirths. The risk of stillborn piglets was lowest in winter and during this season larger changes in hut temperature between day 1 prepartum and the day of farrowing increased the risk of stillbirths (F1,99=6.39, P=0.013). In addition, during the warm part of the year stillbirth rate increased at temperatures ⩾27°C. Year variation also affected liveborn mortality (F3,561=3.86, P=0.009) with a lower rate of liveborn deaths in spring. However, the hut climate did not influence liveborn deaths. Consequently, other factors than hut climate may explain the influence of year variation on liveborn mortality. These could be light differences causing seasonality in reproduction and lactation.  相似文献

Rivers export nutrients to coastal waters. Excess nutrient export may result in harmful algal blooms and hypoxia, affecting biodiversity, fisheries, and recreation. The purpose of this study is to quantify for European rivers (1) the extent to which N and P loads exceed levels that minimize the risk of harmful algal blooms and (2) the relative shares of sources of N and P in rivers. This may help to identify effective management strategies to reduce coastal eutrophication. We focus on 48 rivers in 27 countries of the European Union (EU27). We used the Global Nutrient Export from Watersheds (NEWS) model to analyze nutrient export by rivers and the associated potentials for coastal eutrophication as reflected by Indicator for Coastal Eutrophication Potential (ICEP). In 2000, 38 of the 48 EU rivers indicated in our study had an ICEP > 0, indicating a relatively high potential for harmful algal blooms. These 38 rivers cover 60% of EU27 land area. Between 2000 and 2050 nutrient export by European rivers is projected to decrease. However, by 2050 still 34 EU rivers, covering 48% of the land area, have an ICEP > 0. This indicates that in these scenarios little progress is made in terms of environmental improvement. About one-third of the rivers with ICEP > 0 are N limited, and about two-thirds P limited. In N-limited rivers reducing N loads is a more effective way to reduce the risk for coastal eutrophication than reducing P, and vice versa. For N-limited rivers agriculture or sewage are the dominant sources of nutrients in river water. In P-limited rivers, sewage is found to be the dominant source of P, except for rivers draining into the Atlantic Ocean, where agriculture can also be dominant. A basin-specific approach is needed to effectively reduce N and P loads.  相似文献

Abstract Introduced birds are a pervasive and dominant element of urban ecosystems. We examined the richness and relative abundance of introduced bird species in small (1–5 ha) medium (6–15 ha) and large (>15 ha) remnants of native vegetation within an urban matrix. Transects were surveyed during breeding and non‐breeding seasons. There was a significant relationship between introduced species richness and remnant size with larger remnants supporting more introduced species. There was no significant difference in relative abundance of introduced species in remnants of different sizes. Introduced species, as a proportion of the relative abundance of the total avifauna (native and introduced species), did not vary significantly between remnants of differing sizes. There were significant differences in the composition of introduced bird species between the different remnant sizes, with large remnants supporting significantly different assemblages than medium and small remnants. Other variables also have substantial effects on the abundance of introduced bird species. The lack of significant differences in abundance between remnant sizes suggests they were all equally susceptible to invasion. No patches in the urban matrix are likely to be unaffected by introduced species. The effective long‐term control of introduced bird species is difficult and resources may be better spent managing habitat in a way which renders it less suitable for introduced species (e.g. reducing areas of disturbed ground and weed dominated areas).  相似文献

In this work, molecular dynamics simulations were performed to investigate the gas diffusion mechanism in catenated metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), for which methane was adopted as a probe and two catenated IRMOFs with interwoven structure, IRMOF-11 and IRMOF-13, were considered. This work reveals that the diffusion pathways of methane molecules in catenated MOFs are mainly governed by the strong confinement in catenation regions, leading to a 3D diffusion along the sheets formed by the A-regions (xy-direction) as well as from one A-region to another by crossing a B-region (z-direction). In addition, the present work shows that the effect of catenation on methane diffusivity is very large, much larger than that on hydrogen diffusivity at room temperature, and that both adsorption selectivity and dynamic selectivity of gas mixtures may be enhanced largely in catenated MOFs, indicating that catenation is a good strategy to improve the overall performance of a material as a membrane in separation applications.  相似文献

We used radiocarbon measurements of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to resolve sources of riverine carbon within agriculturally dominated landscapes in California. During 2003 and 2004, average Δ14C for DOC was ?254‰ in agricultural drains in the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta, ?218‰ in the San Joaquin River, ?175‰ in the California State Water Project and ?152‰ in the Sacramento River. The age of bulk DOC transiting the rivers of California’s Central Valley is the oldest reported for large rivers and suggests wide-spread loss of soil organic matter caused by agriculture and urbanization. Using DAX 8 adsorbent, we isolated and measured 14C concentrations in hydrophobic acid fractions (HPOA); river samples showed evidence of bomb-pulse carbon with average Δ14C of 91 and 76‰ for the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers, respectively, with older HPOA, ?204‰, observed in agricultural drains. An operationally defined non-HPOA fraction of DOC was observed in the San Joaquin River with seasonally computed Δ14C values of between ?275 and ?687‰; the source of this aged material was hypothesized to be physically protected organic-matter in high clay-content soils and agrochemicals (i.e., radiocarbon-dead material) applied to farmlands. Mixing models suggest that the Sacramento River contributes about 50% of the DOC load in the California State Water Project, and agricultural drains contribute approximately one-third of the load. In contrast to studies showing stabilization of soil carbon pools within one or two decades following land conversion, sustained loss of soil organic matter, occurring many decades after the initial agricultural-land conversion, was observed in California’s Central Valley.  相似文献

Seasonally driven cycles of incidence have been consistently observed for a range of directly transmitted pathogens. Though frequently observed, the mechanism of seasonality for directly transmitted human pathogens is rarely well understood. Despite significant annual variation in magnitude, measles outbreaks in Niger consistently begin in the dry season and decline at the onset of the seasonal rains. We estimate the seasonal fluctuation in measles transmission rates for the 38 districts and urban centres of Niger, from 11 years of weekly incidence reports. We show that transmission rates are consistently in anti-phase to the rainfall patterns across the country. The strength of the seasonal forcing of transmission is not correlated with the latitudinal rainfall gradient, as would be expected if transmission rates were determined purely by environmental conditions. Rather, seasonal forcing is correlated with the population size, with larger seasonal fluctuation in more populous, urban areas. This pattern is consistent with seasonal variation in human density and contact rates due to agricultural cycles. The stronger seasonality in large cities drives deep inter-epidemic troughs and results in frequent local extinction of measles, which contrasts starkly to the conventional observation that large cities, by virtue of their size, act as reservoirs of measles.  相似文献

In this study, the variations in the fluorescent components of dissolved organic matter (DOM) were tracked for an aerobic submerged membrane bioreactor (MBR) at three different operation stages (cake layer formation, condensation, and after cleaning). The fluorescent DOM was characterized using excitation–emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy combined with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). Non-aromatic carbon structures appear to be actively involved in the membrane fouling for the cake layer formation stage as revealed by much higher UV-absorbing DOM per organic carbon found in the effluent versus those inside the reactor. Four fluorescent components were successfully identified from the reactor and the effluent DOMs by EEM-PARAFAC modeling. Among those in the reactor, microbial humic-like fluorescence was the most abundant component at the cake layer formation stage and tryptophan-like fluorescence at the condensation stage. In contrast to the reactor, relatively similar composition of the PARAFAC components was exhibited for the effluent at all three stages. Tryptophan-like fluorescence displayed the largest difference between the reactor and the effluent, suggesting that this component could be a good tracer for membrane fouling. It appears that the fluorescent DOM was involved in membrane fouling by cake layer formation rather than by internal pore adsorption because its difference between the reactor and the effluent was the highest among all the four components, even after the membrane cleaning. Our study provided an insight into the fate and the behavior fluorescent DOM components for an MBR system, which could be an indicator of the membrane fouling.  相似文献

The seagrass Posidonia oceanica is the most productive system of theMediterranean Sea. In order to gather information on the temporal andspatial variability of the suspended particulate matter in relation tobacterial dynamics, water samples were collected at 10 cm above thesediments over a period of 13 months in the Prelo Bay (Ligurian Sea, NWMediterranean). Measurements of seston concentration, as well as theelemental (POC and PON) and biochemical composition (lipids, proteins,carbohydrates and nucleic acids) of particulate matter were carried out toassess the origin, composition and bacterial contribution to the foodpotentially available in the seagrass system to consumers. Lipids andproteins were the main biochemical classes of organic compounds, followed bycarbohydrates. Despite the highly refractory composition of the seagrassleaves, particulate organic matter was mostly composed of labile compounds(69.9% of POC). POM temporal patterns were controlled by currentspeed at the sediment–water interface that resuspended only smallparticles largely colonised by bacteria after an intensive process offractionation and aging. In the seagrass system, the POM appears to bedominated by bacteria (density ranging from 0.7 to 2.5×109 cells l™1, representing more than48.3% of POC and 68.7% of the biopolymeric carbon, as the sumof lipid, protein and carbohydrate carbon). This feature was characteristicof the seagrass system since much lower bacterial densities were foundoutside the Posidonia meadow. Bacteria were negatively correlated with theconcentration of nitrite and nitrate suggesting a selective utilisation ofinorganic nutrients to support their growth. A series of experiments were conducted to address the fate of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the peat–stream interface zone linking a minerotrophic poor fen and an ombrotrophic mire with surrounding stream water in the drainage area of Lake Örträsket in northern Sweden. Transport and mineralisation of DOC were quantified in peat–stream interface cores in response to variations in pore water velocity, DOC concentration and the molecular size and source of DOC. Mineralisation and CH4 production were positively correlated with pore water velocity at rates between 0.08 and 0.20cmh–1 and negatively correlated at rates between 0.20 and 0.40cmh–1. The DOC concentration of the effluent from the peat cores was independent of the pore water velocity but proportional to the DOC concentration of the source water. Higher concentrations of DOC were exported from than imported to the peat cores, and the cores exported DOC molecules of smaller average molecular size than received. Carbon mineralisation in the peat, assessed in a static system, was independent of the concentration of DOC. DOC with a nominal cutoff at 100Da was mineralised faster by streamwater bacteria than DOC dialysed with a cutoff at 3500Da, and their mineralisation rate was positively correlated with the DOC concentration. Streamwater bacteria mineralised streamwater DOC at a lower rate than the peat–stream interface zone pore water DOC. The pattern of velocity dependence of mineralisation was the same for both sources of peat DOC but the mineralisation rates, average molecular size, and bioavailability of DOC were different, emphasising the importance of the compositional heterogeneity of the peat–stream interface zone for the DOC budget of streamwater.  相似文献

The radiowave dielectric dispersions of DNA in different water–organic co-solvent mixtures have been measured in the frequency range from 100 kHz to 100 MHz, where the polarization mechanism is generally attributed to the confinement of counterions within some specific lengths, either along tangential or perpendicular to the polyion chain. The dielectric dispersions have been analyzed on the basis of two partially different dielectric models, a continuum counterion fluctuation model proposed by Mandel and a discrete charged site model, proposed by Minakata. The influence of the quality of the solvent on the dielectric parameters has been investigated in water–methanol and water–glycerol mixtures at different composition, by varying the permittivity ?m and the viscosity η of the solvent phase. The analysis of the dielectric spectra in solvents where electrostatic and hydrodynamic interactions vary with the solvent composition suggests that both the two models are able, in principle, to account for the observed high-frequency dielectric behavior. However, while some certain assumptions are necessary about the polyion structure within the Mandel model, no structural prerequisite is needed within the Minakata model, where the polarization mechanism invoked considers a radial counterion exchange with the outer medium, which is largely independent of the local polyion conformation.  相似文献

Differentiating between individuals with different knowledge states is an important step in child development and has been considered as a hallmark in human evolution. Recently, primates and corvids have been reported to pass knower–guesser tasks, raising the possibility of mental attribution skills in non-human animals. Yet, it has been difficult to distinguish ‘mind-reading’ from behaviour-reading alternatives, specifically the use of behavioural cues and/or the application of associatively learned rules. Here, I show that ravens (Corvus corax) observing an experimenter hiding food are capable of predicting the behaviour of bystanders that had been visible at both, none or just one of two caching events. Manipulating the competitors'' visual field independently of the view of the test-subject resulted in an instant drop in performance, whereas controls for behavioural cues had no such effect. These findings indicate that ravens not only remember whom they have seen at caching but also take into account that the other''s view was blocked. Notably, it does not suffice for the birds to associate specific competitors with specific caches. These results support the idea that certain socio-ecological conditions may select for similar cognitive abilities in distantly related species and that some birds have evolved analogous precursors to a human theory-of-mind.  相似文献
