The results presented in this paper suggest that sugar beet became less suitable as a host for aphids after late June and early July, when the plants were at the 10–12 leaf stage. This was indicated by a faster rate of aphid mortality and greater incidence of dark stomach deposits after this time. Increased aphid mortality coincided with a change in physiology of sugar beet leaves from being net sinks to sources of assimilate. Aphids which fed on older leaves, irrespective of plant age, suffered greater mortality than those feeding on young heart leaves. The incidence of dark deposits in aphid stomachs associated with this mortality was greater on outer than on inner leaves of old, mature and young plants. It is suggested that the incidence of the dark deposit is an indicator of declining plant quality. The consequences of this for the spread of beet yellowing viruses are discussed.  相似文献

Response of alate aphids to green targets on coloured backgrounds   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
To study the effect of background colour on aphid landing on green targets (water pan traps), two field experiments were set up in Hessen, Germany, in 2003. Traps were put onto coloured plastic sheets (13 colours, straw mulch, transparent foil, and uncovered soil, Experiment 1). In Experiment 2, green water pans were again put on coloured plastic sheets (red, white, green, and yellow), and the sheets were either sprayed with insect glue or not. Backgrounds and traps were spectrally characterised with a field radiometer (320–950 nm). Aphid catches were highest in the traps on the uncovered background, and lowest in the traps on white or silver backgrounds. For Brevicoryne brassicae, Myzus persicae (Homoptera: Aphididae, Macrosiphini) and five further aphid species, there was a significant negative correlation between UV‐reflectance (320–400 nm) and log(N + 1)‐transformed number of individuals. However, the effect of straw mulch (reduced aphid catches with straw compared to the uncovered background), could not be attributed to differences in UV‐reflectance, as UV was almost identical in soil and straw. High numbers of alate aphids were caught in traps with dark backgrounds (e.g. black, dark green), a result which was attributed to the high contrast between the background and target. The substantially higher aphid numbers from targets with bare soil than from targets with spectrally similar black backgrounds were thought to be caused by the structure of the background surface: for alate aphids, landing close to the target on smooth surfaces may induce probing, and the lack of appropriate substrate will result in take‐off, whereas soil will not induce probing, and aphids will continue to move towards the green targets.  相似文献

Two different modes for regulation of stomach acid secretion have been described in vertebrates. Some species exhibit a continuous acid secretion maintaining a low gastric pH during fasting. Others, as some teleosts, maintain a neutral gastric pH during fasting while the hydrochloric acid is released only after the ingestion of a meal. Those different patterns seem to be closely related to specific feeding habits. However, our recent observations suggest that this acidification pattern could be modified by changes in daily feeding frequency and time schedule. The aim of this study was to advance in understanding the regulation mechanisms of stomach digestion and pattern of acid secretion in teleost fish. We have examined the postprandial pattern of gastric pH, pepsin activity, and mRNA expression for pepsinogen and proton pump in white seabream juveniles maintained under a light/dark 12/12 hours cycle and receiving only one morning meal. The pepsin activity was analyzed according to the standard protocol buffering at pH 2 and using the actual pH measured in the stomach. The results show how the enzyme precursor is permanently available while the hydrochloric acid, which activates the zymogen fraction, is secreted just after the ingestion of food. Results also reveal that analytical protocol at pH 2 notably overestimates true pepsin activity in fish stomach. The expression of the mRNA encoding pepsinogen and proton pump exhibited almost parallel patterns, with notable increases during the darkness period and sharp decreases just before the morning meal. These results indicate that white seabream uses the resting hours for recovering the mRNA stock that will be quickly used during the feeding process. Our data clearly shows that both daily illumination pattern and feeding time are involved at different level in the regulation of the secretion of digestive juices.  相似文献

Dickeya dadantii (syn. Erwinia chrysanthemi) is a plant pathogenic bacteria that harbours a cluster of four horizontally-transferred, insect-specific toxin genes. It was recently shown to be capable of causing an acute infection in the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum (Insecta: Hemiptera). The infection route of the pathogen, and the role and in vivo expression pattern of these toxins, remain unknown. Using bacterial numeration and immunolocalization, we investigated the kinetics and the pattern of infection of this phytopathogenic bacterium within its insect host. We compared infection by the wild-type strain and by the Cyt toxin-deficient mutant. D. dadantii was found to form dense clusters in many luminal parts of the aphid intestinal tract, including the stomach, from which it invaded internal tissues as early as day 1 post-infection. Septicemia occurred soon after, with the fat body being the main infected tissue, together with numerous early infections of the embryonic chains showing embryonic gut and fat body as the target organs. Generalized septicemia led to insect death when the bacterial load reached about 10(8) cfu. Some individual aphids regularly escaped infection, indicating an effective partial immune response to this bacteria. Cyt-defective mutants killed insects more slowly but were capable of localisation in any type of tissue. Cyt toxin expression appeared to be restricted to the digestive tract where it probably assisted in crossing over the first cell barrier and, thus, accelerating bacterial diffusion into the aphid haemocel. Finally, the presence of bacteria on the surface of leaves hosting infected aphids indicated that the insects could be vectors of the bacteria.  相似文献

The role of vision and color in close-proximity foraging behavior was investigated for four species of lady beetles: Coccinella septempunctata, Hippodamia convergens, Harmonia axyridis, and Coleomegilla maculata. The effect of light level and color cues on consumption rates varied among the four predator species. The consumption rates of these predators on the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) was measured under light and dark conditions. C. septempunctata,H. convergens, and Ha. axyridis consumed significantly more aphids in the light than in the dark, while the consumption rate of Col. maculata was not affected by light level. Foraging ability was also measured on red and green color morphs of the pea aphid on red, green, and white backgrounds. C. septempunctata consumed significantly more of the aphid morph that contrasted with the background color, and showed no difference between morphs on the white background. H. axyridis consumed significantly more red morph aphids regardless of background. The remaining two species showed no difference in consumption rates on the two color morphs. The variation in the use of visual cues demonstrates how different species of predators can exhibit different foraging behaviors when searching for the same prey. 介绍利用水培麦苗大量饲养麦蚜的技术。在不补充营养液的条件下麦苗可以维持10~15d,一般在饲养条件下可以1周换1次麦苗。小麦种子在经过24h浸种后,平铺在底部垫有滤纸的直径9cm的培养皿中,在25℃,4d后就可以接种麦蚜。适宜的试样条件为温度在18~25℃,相对湿度50%~70%,光周期为17hr∶7hr,饲养1代大约需要5~9d时间,每皿可养麦蚜500头以上。经过40代以上的连续饲养,蚜虫体重和每蚜产幼蚜数量没有明显降低趋势。  相似文献

雪花莲凝集素对具有刺吸式口器的同翅目害虫具有毒杀作用。用基因枪法将1个新的雪花莲凝集素(GNA)基因转入普通春小麦品种中-60634和生产上正在推广的冬小麦高产品种——豫麦66中,分别获得了转基因小麦植株。抗蚜实验证明,转化gna基因的小麦植株对我国北方冬麦区的主要麦蚜——麦长管蚜和禾谷缢管蚜的抗性效果不尽相同。对禾谷缢管蚜,在接种当代即表现出明显的毒杀作用。对麦长管蚜,则表现为虫体发育减缓并且降低了其所生产的若蚜成活率。在自然放养条件下,gna基因则对这两种麦蚜的取食均起到了一定的抑制作用。  相似文献

We studied the reactivation of cells and the repair of photomutagenic damage induced by xanthotoxin and visnagin plus NUV in arg-1 cells of Chlamydomonas reinhardii. Maintenance of liquid cultures in the dark resulted only in a slight reactivation of cells, even after 24 h. Repair of photomutagenic damage was more efficient: within 24 h the number of Arg+ revertants was reduced by 50% in cells cultured in the dark at 20°C. The repair was more efficient at 30°C. At the beginning of dark cultivation an after-effect could be observed. Cultivation in standard white light instead of dark after treatment resulted in a very strong after-effect. Therefore it was not possible to detect any photoreactivation.After treatment with xanthotoxin plus standard white light (24 h) neither reactivation of cells nor repair of photomutagenic damage was found. The after-effect was higher than after xanthotoxin plus NUV. It is possible that a small amount of repair could be masked by the after-effect.Treatment with visnagin yielded similar results. The photomutagenic effect of visnagin is described for the first time in this paper. The drug is a much less effective photomutagen than xanthotoxin. The photomutagenesis of visnagin may be attributable to photoproducts similar to those formed after treatment with furocoumarins.No definite conclusion can be drawn from the present results regarding the basis for the observed lack of repair (or reduced repair) after standard white light treatment; a possible cause might be a preferential formation of bi-adducts under these conditions.  相似文献

This paper develops a deterministic and a stochastic population size model based on power-law kinetics for the black-margined pecan aphid. The deterministic model in current use incorporates cumulative-size dependency, but its solution is symmetric. The analogous stochastic model incorporates the prolific reproductive capacity of the aphid. These models are generalized in this paper to include a delayed feedback mechanism for aphid death. Whereas the per capita aphid death rate in the current model is proportional to cumulative size, delayed feedback is implemented by assuming that the per capita rate is proportional to some power of cumulative size, leading to so-called power-law dynamics. The solution to the resulting differential equations model is a left-skewed abundance curve. Such skewness is characteristic of observed aphid data, and the generalized model fits data well. The assumed stochastic model is solved using Kolmogrov equations, and differential equations are given for low order cumulants. Moment closure approximations, which are simple to apply, are shown to give accurate predictions of the two endpoints of practical interest, namely (1) a point estimate of peak aphid count and (2) an interval estimate of final cumulative aphid count. The new models should be widely applicable to other aphid species, as they are based on three fundamental properties of aphid population biology.  相似文献

Melanocytes of white (d/d) larvae of the Mexican axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) are confined to the dorsal midline of the trunk region, whereas in dark (D/-) larvae they are spread laterally on the flank as well, where they contribute to the normal pigment pattern of the trunk. Pigment cell migration in the subepidermal space of white larvae is inhibited by the white epidermis (Dalton '50; Keller et al., '82). The present scanning electron microscopic study describes a well-defined sequence of changes in shape and arrangement of neural crest cells during and after their segregation from the neural tube in both dark and white axolotls. The morphology of the neural crest cells migrating in the subepidermal pathway of dark larvae is correlated with their motile behavior and pattern of migration in vivo, as described by time-lapse cinemicrography (Keller and Spieth, '83). Also, the structures of the matrix material in the subepidermal space of dark and white axolotls differ in ways that may be related to the epidermal inhibition of migration in the latter. Numerous possibilities for contact guidance offered by the structure and topography of the substrata, neighboring cells, and the extracellular matrix in the migration path are described and discussed.  相似文献

Host evaluation behaviour was examined in three species of aphid parasitoids,Aphidius ervi haliday,A. pisivorus Smith, andA. smithi Sharma & Subba Rao (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae). Parasitoids were provided under laboratory conditions with three kinds of hosts representing two aphid species: (green) pea aphid,Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), and green and pink colour morphs of the alfalfa aphid,Macrosiphum creelii Davis. Females of all threeAphidius species distinguished between aphids on the basis of colour, movement, and host species. Patterns of host acceptance by parasitoids were species-specific. InA. ervi, host preference was the same in light and dark conditions: pea aphid>green alfalfa aphid≫pink alfalfa aphid. In contrast,A. pisivorus attacked and accepted pea aphid and green alfalfa aphid equally in the light and preferred both of these over pink alfalfa aphid; however, it made no distinction between pea aphid and pink alfalfa aphid in the dark. Females ofA. smithi attacked all three kinds of hosts (pea aphid>green alfalfa aphid≫pink alfalfa aphid) but apparently laid eggs only in pea aphid. The frequencies of attack and oviposition by all wasps were higher on ‘normal’ pea aphids than on those anaesthetized with CO2. Host recognition is confirmed by chemical cues in the aphid cuticle that are detected during antennation, and host acceptance is dependent on an assessment of host quality during ovipositor probing.  相似文献

To test the generality of adaptive explanations for coat colorationin even-toed ungulates, we examined the literature for hypothesesthat have been proposed for color patterns exhibited by thistaxon, and we derived a series of predictions from each hypothesis.Next, we collected information on the color, behavioral, andecological characteristics of 200 species of even-toed ungulatesand coded this in binary format. We then applied chi-squareor Fisher's Exact probability tests that pitted presence ofa color trait against presence of an ecological or behavioralvariable for cervids, bovids, and all artiodactyls. Finally,we reanalyzed the data by using concentrated-changes tests anda composite molecular and taxonomic phylogeny. Hinging our findingson whether associations persisted after controlling for sharedancestry, we found strong support for hypotheses suggestingeven-toed ungulates turn lighter in winter to aid in concealmentor perhaps thermoregulation, striped coats in adults and spottedpelage in young act as camouflage, side bands and dark facesassist in communication, and dark pelage coloration is mostcommon in species living in the tropics (Gloger's rule). Whereaswhite faces, dark legs, white legs, dark tails, and white tailsdid not appear to assist in communication alone, legs and tailsthat were either dark or white (i.e., conspicuous) did seemto be linked with communication. There was moderate supportfor hypotheses that countershading aids concealment, that whitefaces are a thermoregulatory device, and that white rumps areused in intraspecific communication. There was weak supportfor spots in adults and stripes in young providing camouflageand for dark leg markings being a form of disruptive coloration.We found little or no evidence that overall coat color servesas background matching, that side bands are disruptive colorationdevices, or that white rumps help in thermoregulation. We examined the physiological responses of four soybean genotypes (KS4202, K-1639-2, ‘Jackson,’ ‘Asgrow 2703’) to soybean aphid (Aphis glycines Matsumura) feeding in reproductive stage soybeans (R1, beginning bloom). Photosynthetic capacity was evaluated by taking survey measurements at 7, 17, 24, and 28 days after aphid introduction and by measuring assimilation/internal CO2 (ACi) curves at 29 days after aphid introduction. There were no significant differences in survey measurements between the control and infested KS4202, K-1639-2, Jackson, and Asgrow 2703 plants at 7, 17, 24, and 28 days after aphid introduction. At 29 days after aphid introduction, Asgrow 2703 plants showed a significant reduction in photosynthetic capacity compared to its control plants, while infested KS4202 plants had photosynthetic rates similar to control plants, suggesting the plant’s ability to compensate for aphid feeding. Differences in gas-exchange parameters, specifically Jmax and CE, between control and infested Asgrow 2703 plants showed that soybean aphid feeding negatively impacts the carbon-linked/dark reactions, specifically rubisco activity and RuBP regeneration. This research also investigated the role of peroxidases in the defense response of soybeans to the soybean aphid. Enzyme kinetics studies documented the up-regulation of peroxidase activity for both Asgrow 2703 and KS4202 aphid-infested plants compared to their respective uninfested control plants at 24 and 28 days after aphid introduction. Peroxidase expression profiles identified differences in the isozyme profiles of aphid-infested and control plants for Asgrow 2703 and KS4202. Differences between physiological responses of infested KS4202 and Asgrow 2703, particularly temporal changes in photosynthesis activity, imply that KS4202 tolerates some impacts of soybean aphid feeding on photosynthetic integrity.  相似文献

Net CO2 exchange rates and dark respiration rates were determined for single attached legume leaves (leaflets) after 6 to 9 days of aphid infestation. Plant-aphid combinations used were broad bean ( Vicia faba L. cv. Aquadulce) and cowpea [ Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. cv. Caloona)] infested with cowpea aphids ( Aphis craccivora Koch) and broad bean and garden pea ( Pisum sativum L. cv. Victory Freezer) infested with pea aphids [ Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris)]. Leaves from all aphid-infested plants had significantly greater net CO2 exchange rates in the light than their respective controls and rates of dark respiration of leaves from infested cowpea and garden pea were also significantly greater than those of controls. Dark respiration, as a percentage of net CO2 exchange rates in the light, was greater in aphid-infested than in control plants. When the mean net daily carbon gain was calculated for the leaves of each plant-aphid combination, leaves from aphid-infested plants had the greatest gain. It is proposed that net CO2, exchange rates increased due to increased sink demand and dark respiration rates increased to meet the increased energy requirements of phloem loading and cellular maintenance associated with aphid feeding. The apparent compensatory carbon gain of infested leaves was consumed by the aphids.  相似文献

Evidence is given that a selective light-pretreatment of the embryonic axis exerts a deep influence on the greening in primary leaves of 8-day-old etiolated bean seedlings (Phaseolus vulgaris cv. Limburg). After a subsequent dark incubation of sufficient length and a final exposure of the entire plants to continuous illumination the lag phase of chlorophyll synthesis is completely removed. In particular the highly meristematic hook tissue seems to be responsible for this light effect. Lengthening of the dark period following pre-irradiation increased the capability of chlorophyll production in the main white light period, reaching its maximum after about 12 hours of darkness. The period of dark incubation for elimination of the lag phase is considerably longer in plants with shielded leaves than the length of the lag phase in etiolated seedlings of the same age, exposed entirely to continuous light. This difference may be explained by the synergistic effect between leaves and embryonic axis. Evidence for this interorgan cooperation is given by experiments with a selective light-pretreatment of leaves and embryonic axis. After a 5 min pre-exposure to white light of whole plants the leaves of some of the plants were shielded and these plants received a further pre-illumination of 2 hours on their embryonic axis. In all the pre-irradiated, etiolated plants the lag phase of chlorophyll synthesis was eliminated during the main white light period, following a dark incubation of 2 hours. Additional and preferential light activation of the embryonic axis during the pretreatment had no significant effect on chlorophyll production during the white light illumination after a 2 hours dark incubation, but resulted in a lower yield of chlorophylls after 18 hours dark incubation compared to the white light controls, receiving no selective light-pretreatment on the embryonic axis. From our results we can decisively conclude that a simultaneous light-pretreatment of both, leaves and embryonic axis, is more effective and beneficial for building up a capacity of chlorophyll synthesis in the leaves than either a selective light-pretreatment of the embryonic axis alone or a simultaneous pre-illumination of leaves and embryonic axis, immediately followed by an additional preirradiation of the embryonic axis. Therefore, we think that several photoactive sites are involved in de-etiolation processes of intact, etiolated seedings. Light activation of the embryonic axis stimulates the development of this organ and contributes to the greening processes in the leaf. At the same time, by irradiating the leaf, light activates the photo-sensitive site in the leaf itself, which also develops a capacity for chlorophyll synthesis. Both photo-acts are cooperative, explaining the enhanced chlorophyll production. Additional pre-irradiation of the embryonic axis after a short illumination of whole plants favours its own development and reduces the synthetic capacity of the leaf. A prolonged far-red pretreatment induces qualitatively the same response as white light. We assume that these effects on lag phase removal and chlorophyll production, induced in etiolated, primary bean leaves by selective irradiation of the embryonic axis, is a phytochrome-mediated process. Our results indicate a transmission of light-induced stimuli from one organ to another.  相似文献

The impact of light and its role in Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), damage symptom formation, and photosynthetic capacity in 'Arapahoe' wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were examined. After 72 h under continuous dark or continuous light regimes, the number of aphids (nymphs), leaf rolling and chlorosis ratings, fresh leaf weight, and chlorophyll contents were recorded. Photosynthetic rates, chlorophyll a, kinetics and chlorophyll extractions also were determined. Aphid infestation caused significant reductions in plant height, fresh weight, gas exchange, and chlorophyll fluorescence only under continuous light. Under the 72 h continuous dark regime, aphid infestation did not cause either damage symptom formation or reduction in plant growth or metabolism (photosynthesis). Furthermore, significantly more D. noxia nymphs were produced under continuous light condition than continuous dark. Our results demonstrate that the development of D. noxia feeding damage symptoms (i.e., leaf rolling and chlorotic streaks) on susceptible wheat seedlings is a light-activated process, even though the elicitor of the plant damage symptoms is aphid feeding.  相似文献

1 A 2‐year field study was conducted to generate data on seasonal abundance patterns of cotton aphids Aphis gossypii Glover and to develop a mechanistic model based on cumulative population size. The treatments consisted of three irrigation levels (Low, Medium and High) with 65%, 75% and 85% evapotranspiration replacement and three nitrogen fertility treatments (blanket‐rate‐N, variable‐rate‐N and no nitrogen). 2 A nonlinear regression equation, the analytical solution of a cumulative size mechanistic model, was fitted to each of the 27 individual data sets collected in 2003 and in 2004. The size and time of the peak, the cumulative aphid density, and the birth and death rates were estimated for each population, and each of these five variables was analyzed as a response variable in the analysis of variance. 3 For 2003 (a dry year), the Water (irrigation) main effect was found to be significant for the time of peak, the death rate and the cumulative density. The lower aphid death rate at low water levels might be due to the water stress in plants. 4 For 2004 (a year with moderate precipitation), the Nitrogen main effect was significant for both the birth and death rates. As nitrogen applications were increased, the decrease in both the aphid birth and death rates translates into a decrease in crowding and an increase in aphid survival. 5 The fact that treatment effects may be manifested through birth and death rate parameters in the new mechanistic model opens up new avenues for analyzing population size data of this kind.  相似文献

The etioplast/chloroplast transformation in angiosperms is controlled by light; most of the processes are mediated by phytochrome. We have shown that in the primary leaves of etiolated seedlings of wheat ( Triticum aestivum L. cv. Kolibri), fire-bean ( Phaseolus multiflorus L. cv. Preisgewinner) and in the cotyledons of etiolated sun flower seedlings ( Helianthus annuus L. cv. macrocarpa) the chlorophyll accumulation in the phase after the end of the lag phase can be greatly stimulated by a cold predarkening period. This effect is not necessarily coupled with a red preirradiation. Furthermore the lag phase can be dramatically shortened by the cold, dark pretreatment, whereas the amount of photoconvertible protochlorophyll(ide) in the darkness remains unaffected by the cold, dark pretreatment. The stimulating effect of a cold, predarkening period on greening is fully reversible by a warm, dark phase that is placed between the cold period and the onset of the continuous white light phase. These findings cannot be generalized: We could demonstrate that in the tropical plant Momordica charantia greening under white light was not affected by different temperature pretreatments during predarkening. The stimulating effect of a cold, predarkening period on greening is assumed to have ecological relevance.  相似文献

Most aphid species Hemiptera: Aphididae are parthenogenetic between periods of sexual reproduction. They are also highly polyphenic, with different adult morphs occurring in the life cycle, piz. winged, wingless, asexual and sexual. It is assumed that aphids born in a parthenogenetic clonal lineage are genetically identical regardless of the final adult form with the exception of sexual forms). Using the randomly amplified polymorphic DNA-polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR) we have found that different asexual adult phenotypes winged and wingless of some clones of two cereal aphid species (the grain aphid, Sitobion avenae (F.) and the bird-cherry aphid. Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) may be distinguished by the presence or absence of one or more RAPD-PCR bands. In three of nine clones examined, such differences were found, and Southern blotting and hybridization of the discriminating bands confirmed these to be of aphid origin, rather than due to endosymbiotic bacteria or contaminating fungi. The main 248 and 296 bp bands, in the two species respectively, were sequenced and found to be A/T rich. The smaller band showed 57% homology with white striated muscle over a stretch of 90 bp. Genomic DNA treated with dimethyl sulphoxide to remove secondary structures still showed differences in RAPD-PCR profiles between winged and wingless morphs within the unusual clones.
