The objective of this study was to examine the association between discrimination and obesity among a U.S. nationally representative sample of African-American men. Data from the 2001–2003 National Survey of American Life (NSAL) were used to collect measures of everyday and major discrimination, and body mass index (BMI) taken from self-reports. Poisson regression with robust standard errors was applied to estimate the prevalence ratios of everyday and major discrimination as it relates to obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2), controlling for potential confounders. In the model that included both everyday and major discrimination, men who experienced any major discrimination had a higher likelihood of obesity (prevalence ratio [PR] = 1.33, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.06, 1.66) than those who did not experience any major discrimination, controlling for age, marital status, income, education, major stressors, two or more chronic conditions, and physical activity. Exposure to any major discrimination was found to be associated with obesity in African-American men. Future studies among this population are needed to examine whether the observed changes in self-reports of major discrimination are associated with obesity, measured by BMI, over time. The health of African-American men must be a priority in reducing excess disparities in disease, disability, and death.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine whether age influences the relationship between alcohol drinking and obesity. Japanese men receiving periodic health checkups (20–70 years old, n = 36,121) were divided into non‐, light (<22 g ethanol/day), moderate (≥22 and <44 g ethanol/day), and heavy (≥44 g ethanol/day) drinkers. Relationships between alcohol intake and obesity‐related indices were compared among the quartiles of age. BMI was lower in light and moderate drinkers than in nondrinkers, and these differences were more prominent in the 1st and 2nd quartiles of age than in the higher quartiles. In the 1st and 2nd quartiles of age, waist circumference and waist‐to‐height ratio were significantly smaller and lower, respectively, in light and moderate drinkers than in nondrinkers, and these differences were less prominent in the 3rd quartile and were not found in the 4th quartile. In the 1st and 2nd quartiles of age, odds ratios vs. nondrinkers for large waist circumference were significantly low (P < 0.01) in light drinkers (1st quartile: 0.64 (0.54–0.75); 2nd quartile: 0.69 (0.60–0.80)) and moderate drinkers (1st quartile: 0.69 (0.61–0.78); 2nd quartile: 0.84 (0.76–0.93)), whereas the odds ratio was significantly low (P < 0.05) only in light drinkers in the 3rd quartile (0.84 (0.73–0.97)) and was not significant in any drinker groups of the 4th quartile. The results suggest that alcohol consumption is associated with lower risk of obesity in Japanese men and this association is more prominent in younger men than in older men.  相似文献

Testosterone and estradiol levels were measured by saliva assays in 15 young men, and their relationships with different processes in a mental rotation task were elucidated. The estradiol level was positively correlated with reaction time; this effect was yielded by the slope of functions relating performance to angular disparity. These findings suggest that estrogen may inhibit the performance of a mental rotation task by affecting perception of the rotation process.  相似文献

Progesterone can be detected in male plasma and has been considered to originate mainly from the adrenals. We have examined the association between circulating progesterone and obesity in a sample of thirty-eight lean to morbidly obese men aged 44.5 +/- 9.9 years (BMI: 44.3 +/- 12.8 kg/m (2)). Plasma concentrations of progesterone, 17-OH-progesterone as well as androstenedione, testosterone, DHT and DHEA-S were determined. Negative correlations were observed between plasma progesterone levels and body weight (r = - 0.47, p < 0.05), BMI (r = - 0.56, p < 0.001), waist circumference (r = - 0.58, p < 0.001), as well as subcutaneous adipocyte diameter (r = - 0.50, p < 0.05). Plasma levels of 17-OH-progesterone, DHEA-S, androstenedione, testosterone and DHT were also negatively associated with body weight, BMI and waist circumference. However, the ratio of 17-OH-progesterone-to-progesterone and androstenedione-to-17-OH-progesterone were not related to these variables. A positive correlation was found between circulating progesterone and DHEA-S levels (r = 0.50, p < 0.002 after adjustment for age). Accordingly, using multivariate regression analyses, the best steroid predictor of progesterone level was plasma DHEA-S. Waist circumference was the best predictor of progesterone levels in a multivariate model including steroid concentrations as well as waist circumference, BMI and subcutaneous adipocyte diameter. In conclusion, plasma progesterone was negatively associated with markers of obesity such as BMI, waist circumference and subcutaneous adipocyte diameter in this sample of men. Circulating DHEA-S level was the best steroid correlate of plasma progesterone. We suggest that the low progesterone levels observed in obese men may reflect decreased adrenal C(19) steroid production in the adrenal cortex. Further research is needed to confirm this hypothesis.  相似文献

Background and aimPrevious evidence has suggested an association between selenium and cardiovascular disease, which is main outcome of metabolic syndrome. The aim of this study was to examine possible correlation between selenium nutritional status and metabolic risk factors in men with visceral obesity.MethodsPlasma samples were collected from 123 Indonesian men with visceral obesity. Their metabolic risk factors and selenium nutritional status were analyzed. The eligible subjects (n = 78) were stratified according to the International Diabetes Federation: obese, obese plus one component, and obese plus two components or more. Obese plus two components or more were diagnostic criteria of metabolic syndrome. Pearson's correlation was performed to examine the correlation in each group.ResultsIn the obese group, selenium positively correlated with high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (r = 0.390, P < 0.05) and with fatty acid binding protein-4 (FABP4) (r = 0.474, P < 0.05); glutathione peroxidase-3 (GPx3) activity was inversely correlated with FABP4 (r = ?467, P < 0.05). In the obese plus one component group, GPx3 activity positively correlated with HDL cholesterol (r = 0.413, P < 0.05). In the metabolic syndrome group, selenium negatively correlated with monocytes chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1 (r = ?0.429, P < 0.05).ConclusionsThese results show that the association between selenium nutritional status and metabolic risk factors is limited to particular group of obese men with or without metabolic syndrome.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To clarify the type of fetal growth impairment associated with increased blood pressure in adult life, and to establish whether this association is influenced by obesity and is mediated through impairment of insulin action. DESIGN: Cross sectional survey with retrospective ascertainment of size at birth from obstetric archives. SUBJECTS: 1333 men resident in Uppsala, Sweden, who took part in a 1970 study of coronary risk factors at age 50 and for whom birth weight was traced. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Systolic and diastolic blood pressure at age 50. RESULTS: In the full study population for a 1000g increase in birth weight there was a small change in systolic blood pressure of -2.2mmHg (95% confidence interval -4.2 to - 0.3mmHg) and in diastolic blood pressure of -1.0mmHg (-2.2 to 0.1mmHg). Much stronger effects were observed among men who were born at term and were in the top third of body mass index at age 50, for whom a 1000g increase in birth weight was associated with a change of -9.1mmHg (-16.4 to-1.9mmHg) systolic and -4.2mmHg (-8.3 to -0.1mmHg) diastolic blood pressure. Men who were light at birth (<3250g) but were above median adult height had particularly high blood pressure. Adjustment for insulin concentrations reduced the associations of birth weight with systolic and diastolic blood pressure. CONCLUSIONS: A failure to realise growth potential in utero (as indicated by being light at birth but tall as an adult) is associated with raised adult blood pressure. Impaired fetal growth may lead to substantial increases in adult blood pressure among only those who become obese. Metabolic disturbances, possibly related to insulin resistance, may provide a pathway through which fetal growth affects blood pressure.  相似文献

This study aimed to examine how the muscularity of the abdomen at the umbilicus level differs between sedentary middle-aged and young men. Magnetic resonance imaging was applied to determine the cross-sectional areas of skeletal muscle, subcutaneous fat, and interperitoneal tissue in 43 middle-aged (40 58yrs) and 38 young (21-29 yrs) men. The cross-sectional area of the skeletal muscle was analyzed as the sum of those of the rectus abdominis, abdominal oblique, lower back, and iliopsoas skeletal muscle groups. The middle-aged men showed greater waist circumference and whole abdominal cross-sectional area than the young men. In addition, the cross-sectional areas of subcutaneous fat and interperitoneal tissue were greater in the middle-aged men than in the young men. However, the total cross-sectional area of the skeletal muscle was similar between the two groups, although its percentage to the whole abdominal cross-sectional area was higher in the young men compared to the middle-aged men. Among the four skeletal muscle groups analyzed, the percentage of the cross-sectional areas in abdominal oblique muscles to that of total skeletal muscle was higher in the middle-aged men than in the young men and that of the lower back muscles was the reverse. These results were similar even when cross-sectional area data were analyzed using a subsample (33 middle-aged and 23 young men) matched for body height and mass. Thus, the present study indicated that the total muscularity of the abdomen at the umbilicus level was similar between the middle-aged and young men, but the relative distributions of lower back and abdominal oblique muscles varied between the two generations.  相似文献

Obesity is one of the major risks for chronic health conditions. Immigrants from low- and middle-income to high-income countries show a tendency to weight gain, with the country of origin, lifestyle habits, socioeconomic status and length of residence as the main factors involved. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze the association between fat distribution and obesity with length of residence and other socio-demographic variables in a sample of North African women migrated to Italy. Socio-demographic variables were collected by structured face-to-face interview. For the assessment of weight status and body composition, various anthropometric traits were directly measured by an expert anthropometrist. Data were analyzed using ANCOVA adjusted for age to test the differences between length of residence (divided into three groups) and logistic regression models adjusted for covariates to test the association between overweight and/or obesity and length of residence. Significant differences between the three groups were observed in waist circumference (p = 0.004), waist-to-hip ratio (p = 0.001), and upper arm muscularity (p = 0.025), with higher values in those with longer duration of residence. In the crude logistic regression model length of residence resulted positively associated with obesity with the odds of being obese increased by 2.4 times in long term immigrants [OR 2.364 (0.766; 7.296)]. After adjusting for covariate the association remained significant [OR 3.584 (0.779; 16.480)], and being poorly educated [OR 5.737 (0.641; 51.363)], unemployed [OR 6.892 (0.940; 50.528)] and not practicing regular physical activity [OR 17.736 (1.569; 200.418)] increased the odds ratio of being obese.In conclusion, length of residence, socioeconomic status, and physical activity were significantly correlated with obesity, with a longer duration of residence being positively associated with central fat adiposity and upper arm muscle area in North African migrant women.  相似文献

Abundance of uncommon vascular plant species (indicator species and red-listed species) was recorded in 120 circular (12.6 m2) random plots in young (10–24 years after deal-cutting) and old (>80 years) forest stands, respectively, in the forest area of Vällen (2 600 ha), ca. 80 km north of Stockholm, Sweden. Factors describing stand density, field-layer and soil moisture were recorded. A total of 16 species were observed and of these 14 were found in old and 9 in young stands. Seven species occurred exclusively in the old stands and two in the young stands. The total number of species records was significantly higher in young than in old stands, 80 and 71, respectively. Mean number of records per ha was ca. 530 for the young stands and ca. 470 for the old. Of the five species common enough to be tested, a difference was only found for Paris quadrifolia , which was significantly more frequent in young than old stands. Galium odoratum, Hepatica nobilis, Lathyrus vernus and Paris quadrifolia grew in significantly more sheltered sites, e.g. beneath other herbs and grasses or close to shrubs and trees in young compared to old stands. Nested subset analysis showed that the whole data-set had a nested structure. Galium odoratum was significantly nested and thus indicated rich plant assemblages. In this calcareous area with nutrient-rich forest soils, there evidently is a potential for at least some uncommon vascular plant species to survive the phases following clearcutting. The study indicates that green-tree retention at final fellings and avoidance of heavy shrub removal during cleaning are beneficial to the flora.  相似文献

Objective: To measure trends in the prevalence of overweight and obesity and the relationship with urban or rural residence and education in Thailand. Research Methods and Procedures: Data were from two nationally representative surveys of 38,323 individuals ≥18 years old (19,156 were 18 to 59 years old) in 2004 and 3375 individuals 18 to 59 years old in 1997. Overweight and obesity were defined using the World Health Organization's Asian criteria. Results: Among those ≥18 years old in 2004, 17.8% of men (95% confidence interval, 16.6% to 19.0%) were overweight, 18.4% (17.3% to 19.5%) had Class I obesity, 4.8% (4.1% to 5.5%) had Class II obesity, and 15.9% (14.6% to 17.1%) had abdominal obesity. In women, 18.2% (17.1% to 19.2%) were overweight, 26.1% (24.9% to 27.3%) had Class I obesity, 9.3% (8.6% to 10.0%) had Class II obesity, and 37.3% (35.3% to 39.2%) had abdominal obesity. In those 18 to 59 years old, the prevalence of Class I obesity in men and all four categories in women significantly increased between 1997 and 2004. There was an inverse relationship in women but a positive relationship in men between education and the odds of being overweight or obese. In 2004, there were significantly lower odds of being overweight or obese in rural compared with urban men but similar odds between urban and rural women. Discussion: The prevalence of overweight and obesity in Thailand is high and increasing. Although the transition of overweight and obesity to those of lower socioeconomic status is not complete, it is well on the way.  相似文献

Season of birth has been shown to correlate with many aspects of somatic and mental disorders, development and social adaptation (so-called 'birth-date effects'). In a sample of young Swedish men, corresponding roughly to a one-year birth cohort, the results of intelligence tests, psychologists' ratings of psychological function, school achievement, body height, weight and self-reported health during childhood, were found to be correlated with month of birth, and--more strongly--father's socioeconomic status. The results were more favourable for men who were born during March-May (the period of highest birth rate), and whose fathers were of higher socioeconomic status, than for those born in November and December (the period of lowest birth rate), and whose fathers were in the lower socioeconomic group. It seems reasonable to conclude, from this study and previously reported findings, that these so-called 'birth-date effects' are determined by varying and often interacting biological and psychosocial factors. Among these factors, the light-induced entrainment of circadian and annual rhythms in the fetus and/or infant seems to be of pivotal importance. The organization of children into one-year age classes therefore produces an unfair lack of equality of possibilities.  相似文献

Objective: To determine the association of four simple anthropometric indices with coronary heart disease (CHD) in Thai men, and to determine the optimal cut‐off points for each index in the prediction of CHD. Research Methods and Procedures: This is a cohort study with 17 years of follow‐up. A total of 2536 male employees from the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand 35 to 59 years of age at baseline were included in the study. Height, weight, waist circumference, and hip circumference were measured to generate BMI, waist circumference (WC), waist‐to‐hip ratio (WHR), and waist‐to‐height ratio (WHtR). Cox regression models were used to estimate hazard ratios by thirds of each index. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to assess discrimination of CHD. Results: WHtR was most strongly associated with CHD events in Thai men. The age‐adjusted hazard ratio for those in the highest, compared with the lowest, third was 2.89 (1.37, 6.11). Although WHtR had the largest area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) with the optimal cut‐off estimated to be 0.51 (sensitivity, 55%; specificity, 61%), no statistically significant difference (p > 0.10) was found between the AUC for WHtR and that for the other three indices. Conclusion: WHtR is, marginally, the best of the four indices considered to predict CHD events in Thai men.  相似文献

Total testosterone and dihydrotestosterone in blood serum as well as free testosterone in saliva were determined by radioimmunoassay in 110 healthy young men. The results were compared with the development of terminal hair on the trunk and limbs, with the disposition to balding and with the disposition to acne. No significant correlations were found between terminal hair development and absolute androgen levels; however, some significant values were observed in the case of the metabolic rate of dihydrotestosterone/testosterone and the proportion of free to total testosterone. The disposition to balding also correlates positively with the latter ratio. Yet the absolute serum androgen concentrations in men with a disposition to balding is lower than in men with no reduction of scalp hair. The widespread assumption that androgen levels are in general elevated in bald-trait men must therefore be rejected. In accordance with this finding, men with a disposition to balding are morphologically (with regard to anthropometric measures) no more masculine than those with good scalp hair growth. When body build and age are taken into consideration, the relations between terminal hair and androgen ratio are also problematical. No relationship could be found between acne and androgens.  相似文献

We recently demonstrated that natriuretic peptides and especially the atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) are powerful lipolytic agents on isolated human fat cells. To search for a possible influence of obesity on ANP responsiveness, we compared the lipolytic effects of human ANP (h-ANP) on isolated subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue (SCAAT) fat cells from young healthy lean and obese men. The lipid-mobilizing effects of an intravenous infusion of h-ANP was studied, as well as various metabolic and cardiovascular parameters that were compared in the same subjects. h-ANP (50 ng/min/kg) was infused iv for 60 min. Microdialysis probes were inserted in SCAAT to measure modifications of the extracellular glycerol concentrations during h-ANP infusion. Spectral analysis of blood pressure and heart rate oscillations that were recorded using digital photoplethysmography were used to assess changes in autonomic nervous system activity. h-ANP induced a marked and similar increase in glycerol and nonesterified fatty acids, and a weak increase in insulin plasma levels in lean and obese men. Plasma norepinephrine concentrations rose similarly during h-ANP infusion in lean and obese men. The effects of h-ANP infusion on the autonomic nervous system were similar in both groups, with an increase in the spectral energy of the low-frequency band of systolic blood pressure variability and a decrease in the spectral energy of the high-frequency band of heart rate. In SCAAT, h-ANP infusion increased extracellular glycerol concentration and decreased blood flow similarly in both groups. The increase in extracellular glycerol observed during h-ANP infusion was not modified when 0.1 mM propranolol was added to the microdialysis probe perfusate to prevent beta-adrenoceptor activation. These data show that ANP is a potent lipolytic hormone independent of the activation of the sympathetic nervous system, and that obesity did not modify the lipid-mobilizing effect of ANP in young obese subjects.  相似文献

INTRODUCTION: Sex hormones deficiency--hypotestosteronemia (20-30% of men) and dehydroepian-drosterone sulfate deficiency (60-70% of men) are often observed in elderly men. In these men also changes of body composition (visceral obesity, increasing of fat mass), and metabolic disturbances (hypercholesterolemia, hyperinsulinism and insulin resistance) are common disorders. Visceral obesity and insulin resistance may be either reasons or effects of testosterone deficiency. Probably also DHEA-S deficiency is the risk factor of visceral obesity and insulin resistance, but it is not clear, whether this possible influence is independent from testosterone deficiency. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to analyze the association between testosterone and DHEA deficiency and waist/hip ratio (WHR), levels of glucose and insulin resistance (HOMA and FG/FI) in elderly men as well as analysis, whether these sex hormones influent on measured parameters separately. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Together 85 men with age from 60 to 70 years men (mean 66.3+/-1.5 years; mean+/-SEM) was analyzed. Testosterone levels<4 ng/ml or DHEA levels<2000 ng/ml and BMI<30 kg/m2 were including criteria. Patients were divided into three groups: 52 with testosterone deficiency (L-T), 32 with DHEA deficiency (L-DHEA-S) and 67 with deficiency of both sex hormones (L-T/DHEA-S). Statistical analysis was made using Student-t, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney tests. RESULTS: Testosterone levels in L-T, L-DHEA and L-T/DHEA groups were respectively 3.19+/-0.23 ng/ml, 4.89+/-0.45 ng/ml and 3.25+/-0.34 g/ml (p<0.002). While DHEA-S levels were respectively 2498+/-98 ng/ml, 1435+/-1010 ng/ml and 1501+/-89 ng/ml). BMI values do not differ between groups. WHR ratio values were the highest in L-T/DHEA-S group (p<0.05 vs. L-T) group, significant lower in L-T group (p<0.005 vs. L-DHEA-S) and the lowest in L-DHEA-S group. Insulin fasting levels were lowest in L-DHEA-S group, higher in L-T group (p<0.01) and the highest in L-T/DHEA-S group (p<0.001 vs, L-T group). FG/FI values were the highest in L-DHEA-S group, lower in L-T group (NS) and lowest in L-T/DHEA group (p<0.002 vs. L-T group). HOMA ratio values similarly did not change significantly between L-T (6.6+/-3.21) and L-DHEA-S group (5.5+/-2.92), although tendency to higher values in L-T group was noticed, while WHR ratio values were significantly higher in L-T/DHEA group (7.3+/-2.45; p<0.002 vs. L-T group). CONCLUSIONS: DHEA-S and testosterone deficiency were independently associated with higher insulin resistance and obesity. WHR ratio seems to be more sensitive then BMI ratio to reflect the androgen deficiency on obesity and body composition in elderly men.  相似文献
