The stomach contents of fish <100 mm standard length (SL)and fish >100 mm SL collected during June and October intwo deep basins on the Scotian Shelf, showed that juvenile co(and silver hake fed primarily on the two most abundant speciesof zooplankton in the basins: Calanus finmarchicus and Meganyctiphanesnorvegica. These zooplankton were abundant in the basin: duringthe 2 months, forming high concentrations at depths below 200m during the day. In June fish (<100 mm SL) concentratedin the upper 50 m during both day and night. Cod and wolffislcollected between 195 and 240 m had a large percentage of C.finmarchicusin their stomachs suggesting that these fish exploited the highconcentrations of C.finmarchicus below 200 m depth There wasno evidence that Calanus hyperboreus was eaten by any juvenilefish species. Calanus finmarchicus was the most common preyof cod feeding in the top 50 m, but the percentages o C.finmarchicusstages IV and V were lower in the stomachs than in the watercolumn. Cod showed ; strong preference for M.norvegica, withthis prey species having a modified Ivlev's index of 1 indicatingthat cod were highly selective for this species. There was noevidence that C.hyperboreus. stage IV was eaten by any of thespecies offish. Silver hake and dogfish (>100 mm SL) bothfeed oi M.norvegica and C.finmarchicus in the deep regions ofthe basins. In October, silver hake was the most common juvenilefish in the basins, feeding primarily on small stages of M.norvegica.The populations of fish (>100 mm SL) in the basins were mainlyspecies known to feed heavily or euphausiids. The two basinsare unique regions of the shelf because of the large populationsof Calanus copepods and M.norvegica they contain all the yeararound, thereby providing an atrractive feeding ground for manyspecies of fish, particularly silver hake.  相似文献

This study has contributed to the technology of soil stabilization via biocementation based on microbially induced calcite precipitation. The newly described method of in situ soil stabilization by surface percolation to dry soil under free draining environment is tested for its up-scaling potential. Then, 2-m columns of one-dimensional trials indicated that repeated treatments of fine sand (<0.3 mm) could lead to clogging closed at the injection end, resulting in limited cementation depth of less than 1 m. This clogging problem was not observed in 2 m coarse (>0.5 mm) sand columns, allowing strength varying between 850 to 2067 kPa along the entire 2 m depth. Three-dimensional fine sand cementation trials indicated that relatively homogenous cementation in the horizontal direction could be achieved with 80% of cemented sand cementing to a strength between 2 to 2.5 MPa and to a depth of 20 cm. A simple mathematical model elucidated that the cementation depth was dependent on the infiltration rate of the cementation solution and the in-situ urease activity. The model also correctly predicted that repeated treatments would enhance clogging close to the injection point. Both experimental and simulated results suggested that the surface percolation technology was more applicable for coarse sand.  相似文献

Benthic recovery from climate-related disturbances does not always warrant a commensurate functional recovery for reef-associated fish communities. Here, we examine the distribution of benthic groupers (family Serranidae) in coral reef communities from the Lakshadweep archipelago (Arabian Sea) in response to structural complexity and long-term habitat stability. These coral reefs that have been subject to two major El Niño Southern Oscillation-related coral bleaching events in the last decades (1998 and 2010). First, we employ a long-term (12-yr) benthic-monitoring dataset to track habitat structural stability at twelve reef sites in the archipelago. Structural stability of reefs was strongly driven by exposure to monsoon storms and depth, which made deeper and more sheltered reefs on the eastern aspect more stable than the more exposed (western) and shallower reefs. We surveyed groupers (species richness, abundance, biomass) in 60 sites across the entire archipelago, representing both exposures and depths. Sites were selected along a gradient of structural complexity from very low to high. Grouper biomass appeared to vary with habitat stability with significant differences between depth and exposure; sheltered deep reefs had a higher grouper biomass than either sheltered shallow or exposed (deep and shallow) reefs. Species richness and abundance showed similar (though not significant) trends. More interestingly, average grouper biomass increased exponentially with structural complexity, but only at the sheltered deep (high stability) sites, despite the availability of recovered structure at exposed deep and shallow sites (lower-stability sites). This trend was especially pronounced for long-lived groupers (life span >10 yrs). These results suggest that long-lived groupers may prefer temporally stable reefs, independent of the local availability of habitat structure. In reefs subject to repeated disturbances, the presence of structurally stable reefs may be critical as refuges for functionally important, long-lived species like groupers.  相似文献

Fish size and habitat depth relationships in headwater streams   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Summary Surveys of 262 pools in 3 small streams in eastern Tennessee demonstrated a strong positive relationship between pool depth and the size of the largest fish within a pool (P<0.001). Similarly, the largest colonizers of newly-created deep pools were larger than the colonizers of shallow pools. We explored the role of predation risk in contributing to the bigger fish — deeper habitat pattern, which has been noted by others, by conducting five manipulative field experiments in two streams. Three experiments used stoneroller minnows (Campostoma anomalum); one used creek chubs (Semotilus atromaculatus); and one used striped shiners (Notropis chrysocephalus). The stoneroller experiments showed that survival of fish approximately 100 mm in total length (TL) was much lower in shallow pools (10 cm deep) than in deep (40 cm maximum) pools (19% versus 80% survival over 12 d in one experiment) and added cover markedly increased stoneroller survival in shallow pools (from 49% to 96% in an 11-d experiment). The creek chub experiment showed that, as for stonerollers, pool depth markedly influenced survival: the chubs survived an average of 4.9 d in shallow pools and >10.8 d in deep pools. In the striped shiner experiment in shallow artificial streamside troughs, no individuals 75–100 mm TL survived as long as 13 d, where-as smaller (20–25 mm) fish had 100% survival over 13 d. The results of the experiments show that predation risk from wading/diving animals (e.g., herons and raccoons) is much higher for larger fishes in shallow water than for these fishes in deeper water or for smaller fish in shallow water. We discuss the role of predation risk from two sources (piscivorous fish, which are more effective in deeper habitats, and diving/wading predators, which are more effective in shallow habitats) in contributing to the bigger fish — deeper habitat pattern in streams.  相似文献

Many small fish, including several juvenile Atlantic flatfish, are most abundant in shallow areas presumable because these habitats enhance survivorship and/or growth. In this study, we investigated size-dependent depth distributions and the role of shallow habitats as predator refuges for age-0 winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) in a northwest Atlantic estuarine nursery. Analysis of trawl surveys performed during the larval settlement period throughout the Navesink River and Sandy Hook Bay, New Jersey, showed that as fish increased in size, depth of occurrence gradually decreased, so that individuals >35 mm standard length (SL) were concentrated in habitats ∼1 m deep. Tethering in structurally simple and adjacent shallow and deep habitats showed that predation risk for flounder (30-50 mm SL) was low in shallow water (<1 m) and increased rapidly with depth. Summer flounder (Paralychthys dentatus), which were more abundant in trammel nets in deep habitats and included winter flounder in their diets, appeared to be important consumers of tethered fish. Our results indicate that following larval settlement, winter flounder emigrate from or suffer high mortality in deeper water to become concentrated in shallow habitats that can serve as predator refuges even when they lack complex physical structures. These results highlight the potential for functional habitat loss when natural and/or anthropogenic factors make shallow habitats unavailable to young fish.  相似文献

In situ 15N-labelling was used to provide a quantitative assessment of the total contribution of lupin (Lupinus angustifolius) to below-ground (BG) N accumulation during a growing season under field conditions, and to directly trace the fate of the lupin BG N in the next season, including quantifying the N benefit from lupin to a following wheat (Triticum aestivum) crop. The experiments were conducted at two sites, both experiencing a semi-arid Mediterranean-type climate in the wheat-growing region of Western Australia but with differing soil types, a deep sand (Moora) and a sand-over-clay shallow duplex soil (East Beverley, EB). Lupin shoot and root dry matter and total plant N accumulation, proportional dependence on nitrogen fixation and grain yield were greater at the deep sand site than the duplex soil site, although there was a similar proportion of shoot N to estimated total BG N at both sites. The proportion of total plant BG N decreased from the vegetative stage (42–51%) to peak biomass (25–39%) and maturity (23–34%). From 56–67% of BG N on the deep sand and 74–86% on the duplex soil was not recovered in coarse roots (>2 mm) or as soluble N, but was present in the insoluble organic N fraction. There was evidence for cycling of lupin root-derived N into soil microbial biomass and soluble organic N during lupin growth (by the late vegetative stage), but no evidence for leaching of legume derived BG N during the lupin season. Estimates of fixed N input BG were at least four times greater if based on total lupin BG N rather than on N recovered in coarse roots (>2 mm). There were no apparent losses of lupin BG N during the summer fallow period subsequent to lupin harvest at either site. Also, immediately prior to sowing of wheat there were similar proportions of lupin BG N in the inorganic (20–25%) and microbial biomass (6–9%) pools at both sites, with the majority of BG N detected in the <2 mm fraction of the soil column. However, the proportion of residual lupin BG N estimated to benefit the aboveground wheat biomass was relatively low, 10% on the deep sand and only 3% on the shallow duplex. Some (14%) residual lupin BG N was leached as nitrate to 1 m on the deep sand compared to 8% of residual lupin BG N leached to the clay layer (0.3 m) on the shallow duplex. About 27% of the residual lupin BG N on the deep sand at Moora had apparently mineralised by the end of the succeeding wheat season (i.e. recovered either in the wheat shoots, as inorganic N in the soil profile or as leached nitrate) compared to only 12% at EB. There was an unaccounted for large loss of residual lupin BG N (50%) from the duplex soil at EB during the wheat season, postulated to be chiefly via denitrification. At both sites after the wheat season a substantial proportion (32–55%) of legume derived BG N was still present as residual insoluble organic N, considered to be an important contribution to structural and nutritional long-term sustainability of these soils.  相似文献

Lake Oguta is a relatively small, shallow fresh water body (flood season maximum surface area=2.48 km2; max. depth=9.30 m) but the largest natural lentic system in Southeastern Nigeria. The maximum water depth, surface water temperature, Secchi-disc-transparency and conductivity, varied seasonally with rainfall.These parameters had ranges of 7.0–9.3 m, 24.0–31.0 °C, 0.61–4.00 m and 8.6–16.5 S.cm–1, respectively. Weak, unstable thermal stratification developes towards midday in the warmer months (April–August).The sedimentological data show variation in the lake's particle size distribution; with coarse sandy shores, and fine, silty clay at the deep, open area. The sediment particle size variation is related to relief, transportation and depositional processes. The lake basin is a low energy, aqueous continental depositional environment. The origin of the lake is related to the Quartenary/Holocene Eurasian glaciation which correlate with the pluvials in the tropics.  相似文献

A comparison of structure and pattern of the soil seed bank was made between active and stabilized sand dunes in northeastern Inner Mongolia, China. The objective of this paper was to determine the significance of seed bank in vegetation restoration of sand dunes. The results showed that (1) average seed density decreased from stabilized sand dune to interdune lowland of stabilized sand dune, to interdune lowland of active sand dune, and to active sand dune; (2) horizontally, along the transect from interdune lowland to ecotone and to sand dune top, a ‘V’ shaped pattern was presented in the active dune system, and a reverse ‘V’ shaped pattern in the stabilized sand dune system; (3) vertically, the proportion (accounting for the total seeds) of seeds found in 0–20 mm soil profile decreased from stabilized sand dune to interdune lowland of stabilized sand dune, to interdune lowland of active sand dune, and to active sand dune. The same order was also found in 20–50 mm and 50–100 mm soil profiles; (4) the Sokal and Sneath similarity indices in the species-composition between soil seed bank and above-ground vegetation were ranked as: the stabilized sand dune (24%) > the interdune lowland of active sand dune (21%) > the interdune lowland of stabilized sand dune (18%) > the active sand dune (5%); and (5) vegetation restoration of active sand dunes depends on the dispersal of seeds from nearby plant communities on the interdune lowlands. Much effort must be made to preserve the lowlands, as lowlands are the most important seed reservoir in the active sand dune field.  相似文献

A diel survey of in situ species-specific zooplankton clearancerates (with radioactively labelled Chlorella cells) was conductedin the shallow lake of Cr?teil characterized by small-sizedplanktonic forms (algae<10µm and zooplankton <1.3mm). Experiments were performed every 4h at two depths (1 and4m). Power functions relating individual filtering rates tobody length were established for the three most abundant cladoceransand for calanoids (nauplii being included in this feeding group),for each depth and time. No filtering penodicity was observedin Ceriodaphnia spp., adults and copepodites of Eudiaptomusgracilis and Eurytemora velox, and nauplii. On the contrary,clear nocturnal filtering peaks were obtained for Daphnia spp.and for Diaphanosoma brachyurum, these being more pronouncedfor the larger individuals at 1 m deep. The observed diel periodicitycannot be explained by variations in physico-chemical parametersor food concentration alone. The ecological significance ofthis phenomenon in the polymictic lake of Cr?teil is discussedin the light of previously published data and the hypothesesaccounting for it.  相似文献

Summary The distribution with depth of sublittoral marine algae has been investigated at 11 sites on the west coast of Scotland. More than half of the species found were confined to the sublittoral zone. The greatest variety of species was found in shallow water at sites sheltered from excessive turbulence. With increasing depth the number of species found steadily decreased. There was no evidence of a specifically distinct algal flora confined to deeper water. No algae were found deeper than 36 m below ELWS at any site, but the lower limit of algal growth was reduced to 9 m in a turbid water loch and to 3 m at a site where the herbivorous echinoderm Ophiocomina nigra was abundant. Fairly distinct algal communities were found on different substrates. The major communities recognised underwater were algae attached to stable substrata, algae attached to unstable substrata and epiphytic on other algae, especially on the stipes of Laminaria hyperborea. On stable rock in areas subject to water movement L. hyperborea forest was the dominant vegetation whereas on unstable substrata and in sheltered localities L. saccharina was dominant.  相似文献

During recent years, many investigations on small zoobenthos have been performed at the island of Sylt. As these studies were carried out sporadically over many years and as different extraction methods were used, comparisons of the results have been hampered. Therefore, in August/September 1986, 24 sites were sampled and evaluated using one quantitative method throughout. Sites range from mud to exposed sand and from the sublittoral to the supralittoral. Macrofauna and the taxa Plathelminthes, Polychaeta, and Oligochaeta are determined to species level. Macrofaunal (>0.5 mm) abundance is highest in mud and continuously decreases with increasing exposure to wave action. Meiofaunal (<0.5 mm) abundance is less variable. Nematoda dominate in mud and muddy sand, Copepoda in sheltered and exposed sand, other taxa only intermittently. Related to surface area, no correlation between macro-and meiofaunal abundance is apparent. Plathelminthes and Copepoda reach highest abundance per surface area in sand but their per volume density is higher in mud and muddy sand. Related to sediment volume instead of surface area, the meiofaunal abundance pattern is very similar to the macrofaunal pattern. The faunal composition changes gradually along the tidal gradient without general faunal boundaries. On an averange, the faunal similarity of neighbouring sites is highest in Oligochaeta and lowest in Plathelminthes. Presumably, Oligochaeta tolerate wider ranges of environmental factors. This may explain the low number of oligochaete species. On the other hand, Plathelminthes seem to adapt to relatively narrow ranges of factors and their species richness is highest. Because of macrofaunameiofauna interaction it is suggested that the meiofaunal assemblage will be least stable in mud and muddy sand, and most stable in exposed sand.  相似文献

该文研究了黄土丘陵半干旱区密植枣( Ziziphus jujuba ‘Lizao’)林群体根系随树龄变化的空间分布特征。对1年生、4年生、8年生和11年生4种树龄的密植枣林采用剖面法, 获得0-1 m土壤剖面上直径>3 mm、1-3 mm及<1 mm的根系数量和空间位置信息。利用方差分析, 评价了山地密植枣林林分根系随树龄变化的水平和垂直分布特征。结果表明: 3种直径的根系数量均随着树龄的增长而增加, 直径< 1 mm的根系增长速度最快; 随着土层加深, 根系数量递减, 1年生枣林的根系主要聚集在0-40 cm土层中, 4年生及以上树龄的根系主要分布在0-60 cm土层中; 0-1 m土层内, 1年生枣林(株距1.2 m)及4年以上树龄(株距2 m), 同树龄枣林中直径<1 mm的根系水平分布无差异; 同一土层中(0-20 cm, 20-40 cm, 40-60 cm), 无论树龄大小及离树干的水平位置如何, 不同直径根系的数量都无差异。研究表明: 在有水肥管理措施的条件下, 枣林根系垂直方向形成浅层型的适应模式; 在密植环境下, 枣林细根形成根网型的适应模式。  相似文献

2194 Lucinoma borealis (L.) were obtained from 99 quantitative (0.2 m2) samples of substratum (stratified random sampling) collected between November 1975 and October 1976 in the archipelago of Eggholmane ≈20 km south of Bergen. The depth range of the 20900 m2 area was 0.3–13.3 m, and the bottom sediment (fine to very coarse sand) was rich in calcium carbonate. The highest density was found in the deep (≈ 8–13 m) sub-areas, with fine sediment (median grain-size diameter ≈ 0.3–0.5 mm). L. borealis was the most abundant bivalve species in the area studied (59.6%, by number). The average density was 22.2 (C.I. ± 5.4) ind. · 0.2 m ?2, and the biomass was 690 (C.I. ± 116) mg AFDW · 0.2 m ?2. The average size of animals found in shallow water (coarse sediment), with low abundance, was markedly larger than that of those from deeper water. Adults from shallow water consisted of 49.5% females, but in deep water the corresponding figure was only 38.6%.According to the data, spawning in deep water occurred in June, August–September, and possibly also in January–February. The spawning period in shallow water was more diffuse and uncertain. The egg diameter of 123.75 (C.I. ± 1.59) μm, indicates a lecithotrophic development. Maturation occurred at a shell length of 10–13 mm, and the largest animal found was 34.3mm long. The shell of L. borealis grows allometrically.  相似文献

Downward particle fluxes measured by means of sediment traps to a shallow semi-closed bay (Johnson’s Dock, Livingston Island) and to a deep basin in the western Bransfield Strait (Antarctic Peninsula) showed the important role of glaciers as sediment carriers and suppliers to the ocean in a continent without major rivers such as Antarctica. The trap moored in Johnson’s Dock collected coarse sediment (>1 mm mesh) not observed in the offshore traps, which mainly received fine sediment and faecal pellets. The annual total mass flux (TMF) to the coastal zone (15 m) was 900- and three times that to mid-depth (500 m) and near-bottom (1,000 m) traps, respectively. The fine sediment flux was especially important due to its biogenic particle contents. Despite the differences in TMF to the coastal zone and near the bottom in the deep basin, the organic carbon (OC) flux was similar in both environments (16 and 18 g m−2, respectively), whereas biogenic silica (BSi) flux increased three times with depth (75 and 201 g m−2, respectively). These fluxes imply that an important part of the particulate organic matter deposited in the coastal zone is advected basinward within the fine-particle flux. Thus, benthos in deep areas depends largely on the lateral transport of biogenic material produced in shallow environments near the coast. It is also proposed that the disintegration of Antarctic ice shelves and the consequent increment of ice calving may produce local devastations of ecological importance not only on the shallow but also on the rich Antarctic deep-sea benthic communities due to an increment of iceberg scouring and reduction of the organic matter supply.  相似文献

We measured detailed regional depositionpatterns of inhaled particles in healthy adult male(n = 11; 25 ± 4 yr of age) and female (n = 11; 25 ± 3 yr of age)subjects by means of a serial bolus aerosol delivery technique formonodisperse fine [particle diameter(Dp) = 1 µm] and coarse aerosols(Dp = 3 and 5 µm). The bolus aerosol (40 ml half-width) was delivered to a specificvolumetric depth (Vp) of the lung ranging from 100 to 500 ml with a50-ml increment, and local deposition fraction (LDF) was assessed for each of the 10 local volumetric regions. In all subjects, the deposition distribution pattern was very uneven with respect to Vp,showing characteristic unimodal curves with respect to particle sizeand flow rate. However, the unevenness was more pronounced in women.LDF tended to be greater in all regions of the lung in women than inmen for Dp = 1 µm. For Dp = 3 and 5 µm, LDF showed a marked enhancement in the shallow region of Vp  200 ml in women compared with men(P < 0.05). LDF in women wascomparable to or smaller than those of men in deep lung regions of Vp > 200 ml. Total lung deposition was comparable between men and womenfor fine particles but was consistently greater in women than men forcoarse particles regardless of flow rates used: the difference rangedfrom 9 to 31% and was greater with higher flow rates(P < 0.05). The results indicatethat 1) particledeposition characteristics differ between healthy men and women undercontrolled breathing conditions and2) deposition in women is greaterthan that in men.

以多年生克隆植物准噶尔无叶豆(Eremosparton songoricum(Litv.)Vass.)为材料,选择河边(A种群)和沙漠腹地(B种群)两个沙丘,研究从沙丘底部至顶部,沿着水分条件连续变化的梯度,准噶尔无叶豆在分株种群和克隆片段水平的形态变化特征,以期能揭示其在异质性小生境内利用水分资源的对策,并为准噶尔无叶豆的资源保护、培育和利用提供有意义的参考.研究发现:①在分株种群水平,A种群分株高度及地上部生物量显著高于B种群,而B种群地下部(根)的生物量则显著高于A种群;②在克隆片段水平,随着沙丘底部至顶部,A种群与B种群克隆片段高度和地上生物量都减小,而分株密度都增加,但升高或降低的强度不同;A种群根的生物量和长度增加,主要是水平的位于地下0~10 cm层面的直径10mm以下的根长度增加,而B种群根的生物量减小,但长度却在增加,主要是水平的位于地下0~10 cm层面的直径6mm以下的细根长度增加.水平细根的长度增加,更利于无性系进行广泛觅食,同时促进无性系尽快越过不利生境斑块和提高分株在有利生境中的生长概率.结果表明,准噶尔无叶豆对沙丘坡面水分条件连续变化的异质性小生境存在分株种群及克隆片段两个等级的可塑性响应,并通过可塑性变化适应了沙丘坡面水分条件的分异.  相似文献

Freshwater mussels of the genus Diplodon (Unionida) are commoninhabitants of lakes and rivers in South America, and have slowgrowth and long life spans. We established the annual periodicityof incremental shell growth in Diplodon chilensis patagonicus(d'Orbigny, 1835) and calculated growth rates at different ages,using internal ring counting supported by dyeing methods and18O isotope analyses, in two Patagonian populations (Lago Steffenand its effluent Río Manso Inferior, Argentina). Longevitiesof ca. 90 years (Lago Steffen) significantly extend the lifespans reported in the past. Growth rates for old individuals(>30 years) from both lake and river populations average0.16 mm per year along the axis of minimal growth. We evaluatedthe seasonal periodicity of minor and trace elements (Mn, Mg,Sr, Ba, Na, S) in situ by Laser Ablation ICP-MS and ElectronProbe Microanalyser analyses. Line-scans in a valve from LagoSteffen show that Mn, Sr and Ba are preferentially accumulatedduring the summer, while higher concentrations of Mg are foundin the winter bands. Metal/Ca ratios may serve as long-termarchives of environmental variables, e.g. metal concentrationsin water, water temperature and primary productivity. Diplodonchilensis patagonicus valves exhibit excellent characteristicsto construct an accurate chronological archive with time windowsof up to around a century, resolving the environmental signalannually and even seasonally. This research adds to the limited data on coarse and fine root biomass for blue oak (Quercus douglasii Hook and Arn.), a California deciduous oak species found extensively throughout the interior foothills surrounding the Central Valley. Root systems of six blue oak trees were analyzed using three methods — backhoe excavation, quantitative pits, and soil cores. Coarse root biomass ranged from 7 to 177 kg per tree. Rooting depth for the main root system ranged from 0.5 to 1.5 m, with an average of 70% of excavated root biomass located above 0.5 m. Of the total biomass in excavated central root systems, primary roots (including burls) accounted for 56% and large lateral roots (> 20 mm diameter) accounted for 36%. Data from cores indicated that most biomass outside of the root crown was located in fine roots and that fine root biomass decreased with depth. At surface depths (0–20 cm), small-fine (< 0.5 mm diameter) roots accounted for 71%, large-fine (0.5–2.0 mm) for 25%, and coarse (> 2 mm) for 4% of total root biomass collected with cores. Mean fine root biomass density in the top 50 cm was 0.43 kg m−3. Fine root biomass did not change with increasing distance from the trees (up to approximately 5 m). Thus, fine roots were not concentrated under the tree canopies. Our results emphasize the importance of the smallest size class of roots (<0.5 mm), which had both higher N concentration and, in the area outside the central root system, greater biomass than large fine (0.5–2.0 mm) or coarse (> 2.0 mm) roots. The water exchange between the brackish-water firth Pojoviken and the Baltic Sea is restricted by a shallow sill (6 m). An outflowing, oligohaline surface layer is isolated from the nutrient-rich mesohaline deep water by a pycnocline at a depth of 6–10 m. During the ice-free period phytoplankton production is chiefly regulated by the river discharge regime. Contrary to the situation in the outer archipelago and the sea zone, in Pojoviken phytoplankton production continues until late autumn, because the stable salinity stratification prevents the phytoplankton from sinking below the critical depth for production. The phytoplankton composition seems to be regulated chiefly by salinity. The salinity interval 2–2.5 is apparently the critical range where brackish-water phytoplankton changes to an assemblage composed of typical freshwater species.  相似文献

Coral reefs in shallow-water environments (<30 m) are in decline due to local and global anthropogenic stresses. This has led to renewed interest in the ‘deep reef refugia’ hypothesis (DRRH), which stipulates that deep reef areas (1) are protected or dampened from disturbances that affect shallow reef areas and (2) can provide a viable reproductive source for shallow reef areas following disturbance. Using the Caribbean as an example, the assumptions of this hypothesis were explored by reviewing the literature for scleractinian corals—the reef framework builders on tropical reefs. Although there is evidence to support that deep reefs (>30 m) can escape the direct effects of storm-induced waves and thermal bleaching events, deep reefs are certainly not immune to disturbance. Additionally, the potential of deep reefs to provide propagules for shallow reef areas seems limited to ‘depth-generalist’ coral species, which constitute only ~25% of the total coral biodiversity. Larval connectivity between shallow and deep populations of these species may be further limited due to specific life history traits (e.g., brooding reproductive strategy and vertical symbiont acquisition mode). This review exposes how little is known about deep reefs and coral reproduction over depth. Hence, a series of urgent research priorities are proposed to determine the extent to which deep reefs may act as a refuge in the face of global reef decline.  相似文献
