1. The grazing impact of zebra mussels, Dreissena polymorpha Pallas, is often evaluated by applying the individual filtration rate measured in the laboratory to the field abundance and then by comparing the total volume of water filtered with the whole lake volume. Since this approach overlooks refiltration, it overestimates the grazing impact of zebra mussels. To deal with this problem, the present authors developed an in situ method for collecting faeces and pseudofaeces to measure the actual volume of water that is cleared of suspended particles by Dreissena in a unit time under a given set of environmental conditions. This is termed the effective clearance rate (ECR). 2. The experiment was conducted in Hargus Lake, OH, U.S.A., a small thermally stratified reservoir, to test the effects of spatial aggregation, mussel density and the concentration of particulate inorganic matter (PIM) on the effective clearance rate of Dreissena. 3. Over 40 measurements, the ECR values ranged from 15.3 to 68.6 mL ind??1 h??1. Much of the variation can be explained by colony form, mussel density and seston concentration. The effects of these variables were all statistically significant. The average ECR for isolated individuals was higher than that for those in clumps (40.4 versus 32.8 mL ind??1 h??1), which is attributed to increased refiltration in the cores of the clumps. The ECR decreased with increased zebra mussel density because of intensified competition for food particles within the group. The ECR increased with increased PIM concentration in the lake water, which may be interpreted as a result of enhanced water mixing which ultimately caused increases in both sediment resuspension and particle delivery to the mussels. 4. Taking the filtration rates for a 20-mm mussel to be between 116 and 234 mL ind??1 h??1, based on data from the literature, the clumped mussels under the present experimental conditions would have a refiltration ratio between 3.4 and 6.9. 5. The present authors developed an areal clearance model which predicts that seston removal by the Dreissena population is limited by the particle delivery from the ambient water to the mussel bed and will reach a maximum value beyond which no further increase will occur with increased population density. 6. It is concluded that the direct grazing impact of zebra mussel on phytoplankton in thermally stratified lakes is much less effective than predicted from simple filtration rate estimation.  相似文献

We measured seasonal changes in the gut clearance rate of three stonefly species in a stream. The rate declined with water temperature. Based on the gut clearance rate obtained here, we estimated the half-reduction time of gut contents and consumption rate of stoneflies on algae. Irrespective of stonefly species, the half-reduction time in winter (2 days) was twice as long as that in summer (1 day). The areal consumption rates of stoneflies varied depending on species and season. These results imply that the seasonal consumption impact of aquatic insects can be different, despite their daily ration being similar among species.  相似文献

The date of spawning of the first of the two batches of oocytes produced by Harmothoe imbricata each year is known to be influenced by both temperature and day length conditions during the preceeding period of vitellogenesis, acting directly on the rate of oocyte growth. The influence of day length is shown to be in the form of a critical day length effect, with days of 11 h of daylight or more acting as long days and advancing the date of spawning. It is suggested that this critical day length effect serves to synchronize the spawning of the first cohort of oocytes, and it may also entrain an endogenous time sense underlying the reproductive cycle of this species.  相似文献

Direct demonstration of the reversible dissociation of native dimeric methionyl-tRNA synthetase from E. coli has been obtained using small angle neutron scattering and deuterated enzyme. Structural parameters of the fully deuterated dimer are very similar to the hydrogenated one. Analysis of the variations of the intensity and of the radius of gyration of a stoichiometric mixture of the two types of dimer (hydrogenated and deuterated), as a function of D2O content in the solvent, enabled us to characterize an hybrid dimer, having both hydrogenated and deuterated protomers. By separating the contribution of each protomer to the scattering, the radius of gyration of the protomer in situ and the distance between the centers of mass of each protomer in the dimer are determined.  相似文献

运用生物沉积法在四十里湾不同海区对栉孔扇贝的生理生态学特征进行了研究。 1龄栉孔扇贝 (4 1 .1± 4.1 mm,软体干重 0 .48± 0 .1 0 g/ ind)清滤率变化范围为 0 .72~ 2 .5 4(平均 1 .2 7) L/ (ind· h)或 1 .65~ 5 .97(平均 2 .61 ) L/ (g· h)。清滤率受 TPM的变化影响不大 ,而摄食率却随 TPM的升高而升高。 2龄扇贝 (软体干重 1 .91± 0 .3 2 g/ ind)清滤率为2 .0 9~ 3 .99(平均 3 .1 0 ) L/ (ind· h)。栉孔扇贝吸收速率与 POM呈正相关关系 ,而与饵料质量 (POM/ TPM)无明显的相关性。1龄扇贝和 2龄扇贝吸收效率没有显著差别 ;扇贝对 POM的吸收效率与 TPM (或 POM)关系不大 ,却与饵料质量呈明显的正相关关系 ;扇贝对 POC、PON和 PP的吸收效率平均分别为 68.9%、64.0 %和 63 .6%。在沿岸养殖海域 ,栉孔扇贝通过大量的滤水摄食以及较高的吸收效率对生态系统的能量流动和物质循环产生影响。  相似文献

A study was carried out within a 700-km river sector, including three types of ecosystems (a reservoir, a river and its estuary) to characterise the major features of zooplankton communities in the Seine Basin. In rivers, zooplankton biomass becomes significant only when the growth rate of the organisms is higher than the dilution rate (4-5th orders rivers, according to River Continuum Concept). Upstream, short residence times favour the development of small species (Rotifers) with low individual body weight and biomass. Conversely, larger species (microcrustaceans) develop more downstream, where increased residence time leads to autochthonous production (Riverine Productivity Model). Such a pattern is greatly modified by human impact. Zooplankton input from the Marne reservoir represents one type of disruption in the general upstream-downstream trend (according to the Serial Discontinuity Concept). This reservoir is a source of microcrustaceans; they rapidly disappear mainly through fish predation, and therefore have little impact on the river phytoplankton. Discontinuities, such as confluences, have a relatively small effect on the stock of zooplankton with regard to the water release from the reservoir, but they persist more downstream, because they have the same lotic origin. A few microhabitats with macrophytes play a small role for this canalised river, but they can modify locally the plankton community structure and composition. As a whole, the flux of zooplankton rises exponentially, whereas discharge increases linearly from upstream (4th order) to downstream (8th order). In the canalised sectors, Dreissena larvae build up an important biomass, adding to that of the zooplankton sensu stricto. Especially abundant in the downstream sector of the Marne and Seine Rivers, the larvae show a widespread colonisation of the benthic substrates by the adult Dreissena. One of the largest mussel colonies in the middle estuary can contribute to a rapid decrease of zooplankton. Estuary ecosystems form a transitional zone between freshwater and seawater, with zooplankton dynamics closely linked to the particular conditions on this part of the river system.  相似文献

清滤率(Clearance rate, CR)与滤食性贝类生长发育密切相关,采用Box-Behnken设计(BBD)和响应曲面法,在实验室条件下研究了温度(18-34℃)、盐度(20-40)和pH(6.5-9.5)对马氏珠母贝(Pinctada martensii)稚贝清滤率(CR)的联合效应,旨在建立温度、盐度和pH对马氏珠母贝稚贝清滤率的定量关系模型,并通过统计优化方法得出温度、盐度和pH的最佳组合。结果表明:温度的一次效应、温度和pH的互作效应、盐度和pH的互作效应以及温度、盐度和pH的二次效应对马氏珠母贝稚贝清滤率的影响均极显著(P<0.01);盐度的一次效应、pH的一次效应以及温度和盐度的互作效应对清滤率无显著影响 (P>0.05)。实验得出的清滤率模型决定系数为0.9950,预测决定系数为0.9284,表明该模型建立有效并可用于预测马氏珠母贝稚贝的清滤率。通过采用优化方法得出,在温度26.95℃,盐度29.69,pH8.09时,稚贝清滤率达到最大,最大值为1.4894×10-3L/h,满意度为0.9886。研究结果可为马氏珠母贝滤食生理研究及稚贝培育提供理论依据。  相似文献

The influence of food concentration on clearance rate, respiration, assimilation, and excretion at −1.3 °C was studied on individuals of the bivalve Hiatella arctica (L.) from Young Sound, NE Greenland. Clearance rate, assimilation efficiency, respiration, and excretion rates were determined over a range of food concentrations using the microalga Rhodomonas baltica as food source. Physiological rates were generally low but responded significantly to increased food levels. Clearance rates and assimilation efficiency were reduced at increased food levels, whereas respiration and excretion increased. Assimilation efficiency was generally high, which may be an adaptation to the low food concentration during most of the year in NE Greenland. Low filtration rates limited ingestion rates and resulted in a low maximum assimilation of 3 J h−1. Despite the low food intake, very low food concentrations were required for individual specimens to obtain a positive energy budget. Predicted growth based on rates of assimilation and respiration were compared to published estimates of annual growth in Young Sound. We estimate that 3 weeks of growth in the laboratory under optimal food conditions could match annual growth in situ. We interpret this as evidence that food limitation is the primary impediment to growth in this Arctic population.  相似文献

The kinetic properties of rat liver phosphoglycerate kinase were investigated in the forward direction of the reaction (utilization of ADP). The kinetic studies were performed in an assay system using combined hexokinase/glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase as an ATP trap. The Km values for Mg ADP1- and 1,3-diphospho-D-glycerate were approximately 0.11 and 0.006 mM, respectively. Reciprocal plots of 1/v versus 1/ (Mg ADP1-) at different fixed concentrations of 1,3-diphospho-D-glycerate and 1/v versus 1/ (1,3-diphospho-D-glycerate) at different fixed concentrations of Mg ADP1- were apparently parallel. However, product inhibition studies (3-phospho-D-glycerate), dead-end inhibition studies (2,3-diphospho-D-glycerate), and adenosine and AMP inhibition patterns yielded results consistent with a rapid equilibrium random mechanism in which the binding of one substrate greatly decreases the affinity of the enzyme for the second substrate. Existence of two sites for 3-phospho-D-glycerate is suggested.  相似文献

The probable trace maker of B. hemispherica is the fact that one encounters different age groups of sea anemone burrows extended at variable depths in soft, unconsolidated, non-fluidized mud to get stability. It occurs as densely packed, vertical to subvertical, usually unornamented, occasionally showing faint, thin, ring-like structures, allochemic sandstone-filled cylinders with hemispherical base extending to variable depths in the shale. The diameter-to-height ratio calculated for 44 burrow specimens shows that the diameters of most of the specimen are smaller than their height. The probable trace maker of B. hemispherica is the fact that one encounters different age groups of sea anemones, which extended their column at variable depth in soft, unconsolidated, non-fluidized mud to get stability. The inclined nature of paired burrows towards each other suggests social aggression while unpaired inclined burrows suggest swaying in search of food. The monodominant occurrence of B. hemispherica as pre-storm colonization of r-selected organisms (sea anemones) suggest sstressed environment and simultaneous vacation of the burrower reflects rapid sedimentation due to high-energy storm events. Further, storm and inter-storm events deposited sandy allochemic limestone and shale series, respectively, but did not form an identical condition for the colonization of the sea anemone. The species B. hemispherica of the Bagh Group revealed physicochemical parameters (energy conditions, turbidity, sedimentation rate, bathymetry, suspended organic matter, substrate consistency, oxygen, and salinity) of the Late Cretaceous transgressive sea.  相似文献

The length of the posterolateral spines in the rotifer, Brachionus calyciflorus, is variable. The effect of the length of these spines on the clearance rates of B. calyciflorus was examined under laboratory conditions using radioactively-labelled yeast (Rhodotorula) and bacteria (Aerobacter). The hypothesis that individuals with longer spines have higher clearance rates than those of similarly-sized individuals with shorter spines was rejected. The effect of body length (L) on the clearance rates (C) of short-spined and long-spined animals was also examined. Statistically significant linear regressions of the form log10 C = aL + b, were derived for both types. The slopes of both regressions were similar and suggest that clearance rate in B. calyciflorus increases as a cube function of body length.  相似文献

We explore two possible hypotheses about the ecological factors driving the evolution of hemocyte load in insects. The first is parasite infection risk, its variability and the genetic diversity of parasites. The other supposes that all the other factors of environmental stress drive the evolution through a pleiotropic selection on metabolic rate. The two hypotheses are tested with data on hemocyte load and ecology of six Drosophila species of the melanogaster subgroup. Hemocyte load correlates significantly with the parasite-driven selection index, but not with the stress selection index. The result being based on too little data to conclude definitely, this work must be considered more as a methodological research based on published results on insect physiology immunity and ecology rather than an empirical evidence of such a relationship.  相似文献

The effect of six different feeding times was tested on feed intake, growth performance, proximate body composition and nutrient retention in the rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss . Using a non‐linear regression model, a significant rhythmic pattern over a 24 h period was observed for feed gain ratio and nutrient retention responses to feeding time. Specific growth rate and protein growth rate responses were also rhythmic but the trends were not significant. There was no clear effect of feeding time on feed intake and proximate body composition. The study suggested that feed intake, at least under the experimental conditions encountered, was synchronized to feeding time while some physiological rhythms involved in nutrient metabolism were probably synchronized to photoperiod.  相似文献

Periosteal bone histology expresses its rate of deposition. This fundamental relationship between bone structure and growth dynamics, first assumed by Amprino many decades ago, was quantified in preliminary studies, but never statistically tested. Moreover, the precise typological characters of bone tissue linked to growth rate remained poorly known. Here, we present the first statistical analysis of 'Amprino's rule', measured on comprehensive growth series of the mallard, Anas platyrhynchos. Growth rates were assessed by fluorescent labelling. Bone typology was described according to Ricqlès' typological classification. Results show that the presence and proportion of primary osteons, two consequences of bone initial porosity at the time of its deposit, are strongly related to bone growth rate. However, no significant relationship between primary osteons orientation and bone growth rate could be detected, at least for osteonal orientations (longitudinal, laminar and reticular) and growth rates values observed in mallard long bones. These results suggest that Amprino's rule holds for some major typological characters of primary compact bone tissues (i.e. primary osteons presence and proportion). However, it is irrelevant to some other characters (i.e. osteonal orientation), the meaning of which remains to be discovered.  相似文献

We present the pollen analysis of a new sedimentary sequence taken at La Pouretère ( 1720 m), in the mountain vegetation zone of the Marcadau valley (central Pyrenees). The Lateglacial and Holocene chronology is supported by six 14C-dating results. The complementary analysis of some vegetal macroremains, stomata, pollen-clusters and the use of pollen influx allows us to elucidate the dynamic of mountain species such as Pinus and specially Abies but also to infer the unusual part played by Betula at the beginning of the Postglacial period.  相似文献

The effect of sodium chloride and triadimefon (TDM) on the chlorophyll (Chl) content, net photosynthetic rates (PN), rate of transpiration (E), and intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) in Raphanus sativus was studied. The effect of NaCl salinity was partially ameliorated by TDM which caused increase in Chl content, PN, and Ci. TDM also increased root dry matter production, decreased E, and increased the water use efficiency. The pieces of wood extracted by the Marquis of Cerralbo at the Acheulian site of Torralba constitute one of the few materials from this famous locality that have not been subjected to detailed study by researchers. Over a century after their extraction, the present paper provides the first anatomical results of these 34 woody remains. The results highlight the presence of the taxon Pinus sylvestrisnigra group (Pinus cf. sylvestris) at the site, thus constituting one of the few and oldest references attributable to the aforementioned taxon for the Iberian Peninsula. The anatomical diagnosis confirms the existence of Middle Pleistocene landscapes with pine woods at elevations at least 200 m lower than at present in the site area. From a taphonomic point of view, the wood samples exhibit the typical morphologies of woody macroremains preserved in continental sedimentary environments, and there was no evidence at all that they had previously been manipulated by man.  相似文献

Distribution of [14C]MCA and its derivatives in mouse tissuesThe distribution of radioactivity due to 3-methylcholanthrene (MCA) and/or its metabolites was evaluated in different organs of mothers, foetuses and newborns at 6 and 60–66 h following a single intragastric administration of 1 mg of [14C]MCA to pregnant CF-1 mice. The extent of bound [14C]MCA nd/or its metabolites to nuclear and cytoplasmic proteins was evaluated in organs which were proven to be either susceptible (lung) or non-susceptible (kidney) to the carcinogenic effect of MCA. The present data indicate a slightly higher level of free and bound MCA in the subcellular fractions of the lung than in the kidney and concurrently a higher level of covalently bound MCA to the nuclear DNA in the lungs than in the kidney.  相似文献
