The investigation of neurogenesis in polychaetes not only facilitates insights into the developmental biology of this group, but also provides new data for phylogenetic analyses. This should eventually lead toward a better understanding of metazoan evolution including key issues such as the ontogenetic processes that underlie body segmentation. We here document the development of the larval nervous system in the polychaete Sabellaria alveolata using fluorescence-coupled antibodies directed against serotonin, FMRFamide, and tubulin in combination with confocal laser scanning microscopy and 3D reconstruction software. The overall pattern of neurogenesis in S. alveolata resembles the condition found in other planktonic polychaete trochophores where the larval neural body plan including a serotonergic prototroch nerve ring is directly followed by adult features of the nervous system such as circumesophageal connectives and paired ventral nerve cords. However, distinct features are also found in S. alveolata, such as the innervation of the apical organ with ring-shaped neurons, the low number of immunoreactive perikarya, and the lack of a posterior serotonergic cell. Moreover, in the larvae of S. alveolata, two distinct modes of neuronal development are expressed, viz. the simultaneous formation of the first three segmental neurons of the peripheral nervous system on the one hand versus the sequential appearance of the ventral commissures on the other. This highlights the complex mechanisms that underlie annelid body segmentation and indicates divergent developmental pathways within polychaete annelids that lead to the segmented nervous system of the adult.  相似文献

Blocks cut from Porites lutea were laid on the fore reef slope, reef flat and a lagoonal patch reef at Lizard Island, in the Northern Great Barrier Reef, and replicates removed from each environment at intervals of three months over a period of one and a half years. Variations in bioeroders and bioaccretors were noted. Microfaunas are far more numerous than macrofaunas as block colonizers; the principal borers are polychaete worms, whereas encrusters are molluscs, bryozoans, serpulids and solitary corals. The reef slope is more readily colonised by microfauna pioneer communities than are the other areas. All the environments exhibit a change from cirratulids to either sabellids or spionids (polydorids) over the length of the experiment. Accretion occurred on all blocks during the experiment, with significant differences detectable between environments; both reef slope and reef flat blocks showed weight increases of 9–10% whereas blocks from the patch reef showed increases of 15%. Annual erosion rates produced by polychaete worms are 0.694 kg m-2 year-1 (reef front), 0.843 kg m-2 year-1 (reef flat) and 1.788 kg m-2 year-1 (patch reef).  相似文献

Spatial changes in species composition and structure of sublittoral soft-bottom polychaete assemblages along a transect parallel to the shoreline off the Barcelonès and Maresme regions on the Spanish Catalan coast (NW Mediterranean sea) are described. The transect (20 m mean depth) covers 30 km through an area affected by both water sewage discharges and river outflow. These effluents generate a spatial gradient of both silt and organic enrichment, according to the prevailing southerly currents in the zone. South of the effluents, eutrophized sediments supported a macrofaunal assemblage which was typical of polluted bottoms, characterized by the massive presence of Capitella capitata and Malacoceros fuliginosus, high abundance and biomass, low values of species richness, and a simplified trophic structure dominated by surface and subsurface-deposit feeders. North of the effluents, both the mud and organic matter content in sediment decreased drastically and the polychaete assemblages described were progressively less affected with distance. Thus, a clear change in species composition, as well as low values of abundance and biomass, increases in species richness, and a more complex trophic structure on the polychaete assemblages was observed north rather than south of the effluents.  相似文献

  1. Novel hard substratum, introduced through offshore developments, can provide habitat for marine species and thereby function as an artificial reef. To predict the ecological consequences of deploying offshore infrastructure, and sustainably manage the installation of new structures, interactions between artificial reefs and marine ecosystem functions and services must be understood. This requires quantitative data on the relationships between secondary productivity and artificial reef design, across all trophic levels. Benthic secondary productivity is, however, one of the least studied processes on artificial reefs.
  2. In this study, we show that productivity rates of a common suspension feeder, Flustra foliacea (Linnaeus 1758), were 2.4 times higher on artificial reefs constructed from “complex” blocks than on reefs constructed from “simple” blocks, which had a smaller surface area.
  3. Productivity rates were highest on external areas of reefs. Productivity rates decreased by 1.56%, per cm distance into the reef on complex reefs and 2.93% per cm into the reef on simple block reefs. The differences in productivity rates between reefs constructed from simple and complex blocks are assumed to reflect different current regimes and food supply between the external and internal reef areas, according to reef type.
  4. Synthesis and applications. Our results show that artificial reef design can affect secondary productivity at low trophic levels. We demonstrate that the incorporation of voids into reef blocks can lead to a greater proportion of the structure serving as functional habitat for benthic species. By including such modifications into the design of artificial reefs, it may be possible to increase the overall productivity capacity of artificial structures.

基于2014—2016年青岛崂山湾人工鱼礁区的生物资源调查数据,利用Ecopath with Ecosim(EwE)软件构建崂山湾人工鱼礁区生态系统生态通道模型(Ecopath),系统分析了崂山湾人工鱼礁区生态系统的能量流动规律和结构特征,估算了栉孔扇贝的养殖容量。该模型由17个功能组组成,基本涵盖了崂山湾人工鱼礁区生态系统能量流动的主要过程。生态网络分析表明,生态系统各功能组的营养级范围为1.0—4.255,星康吉鳗占据了营养级的最高层。能量流动主要有5级,各营养级平均能量传递效率为10.8%,其中来自初级生产者的能量效率为9.8%,来自碎屑的传递效率为10.9%;系统总流量为14256.510 t km~(-2) a~(-1),其中68%的能量来自碎屑供给;系统的总初级生产量/总呼吸量为1.127,系统联结指数为0.293,杂食指数为0.333,表明崂山湾人工鱼礁区生态系统成熟度较高,食物网结构较复杂,系统内部稳定性较高。关键种指数分析结果显示,许氏平鲉具有较高的关键指数和相对总影响,表明其可能在当前生态系统中扮演重要的生态角色。吊笼养殖栉孔扇贝生态容纳量为189.679 t/km~2,在维持生态系统平衡和稳定的前提下,当前现存量最大可增加18.55%。  相似文献

The rate of environmental niche evolution describes the capability of species to explore the available environmental space and is known to vary among species owing to lineage-specific factors. Trophic specialization is a main force driving species evolution and is responsible for classical examples of adaptive radiations in fishes. We investigate the effect of trophic specialization on the rate of environmental niche evolution in the damselfish, Pomacentridae, which is an important family of tropical reef fishes. First, phylogenetic niche conservatism is not detected in the family using a standard test of phylogenetic signal, and we demonstrate that the environmental niches of damselfishes that differ in trophic specialization are not equivalent while they still overlap at their mean values. Second, we estimate the relative rates of niche evolution on the phylogenetic tree and show the heterogeneity among rates of environmental niche evolution of the three trophic groups. We suggest that behavioural characteristics related to trophic specialization can constrain the evolution of the environmental niche and lead to conserved niches in specialist lineages. Our results show the extent of influence of several traits on the evolution of the environmental niche and shed new light on the evolution of damselfishes, which is a key lineage in current efforts to conserve biodiversity in coral reefs.  相似文献

This study explores the possible influence of human coastal development (before and after) and protected area status (within and outside a marine protected area, MPA) on composition, density, and maximum size of fish species and guilds, including mean trophic level of the fish community, in four localities of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexican Caribbean. Reef fish density, maximum length, species composition, and trophic guilds were recorded by SCUBA belt transects and stationary points in fore reef and lagoon reef areas at decadal intervals (1995–1998, 2006–2010, 2014–2015). Mean density of most species and guilds decreased significantly through the years, as also did mean trophic level of the fish community. Some fish species increased in length. Fish density for many species was larger outside than inside the MPA in 1995–1998; however, the difference tended to disappear in the more recent decades, which reflects either a positive effect of the MPA, or a detrimental effect of coastal development in the non-protected area. Nevertheless, the overall negative trends suggest a regional or global rather than a local cause.  相似文献

Sabellaria alveolata is a tube-building gregarious polychaete that constructs large biogenic reefs. In macrotidal shellfish ecosystems, this species competes for food with cultivated suspension-feeders. The suspension-feeding activity and clearance rate of S. alveolata were investigated in response to changes in seston concentration. A flow-through system was designed to study 225 cm2 reef blocks with more than 500 individuals. The experimental conditions were characterized by increasing concentrations of suspended particulate matter ranging from 6.5 to 153.8 mg L1, while the organic content of the diet (microalgae Skeletonema costatum) decreased inversely from 49 to 9%, to mimic the dilution of organic matter by inorganic particles, characteristic of tidal resuspension. We showed that the clearance rate exponentially decreased in relation to an increase in SPM concentration. Clearance rate was estimated at 5.3 10− 3 L h− 1 or 0.93 L h− 1 g− 1 (dry weight) for the lowest seston concentration (SPM = 6.5 mg L− 1) and reached the asymptote at CR = 1.97 10− 3 L h− 1 or 0.35 L h− 1 g− 1 (dry weight) when SPM exceeded 45 mg L− 1. Using picture analyses of polychaete movements, we showed that, paradoxically, an increase in SPM concentration did not adversely affect the feeding activity of S. alveolata since the number of filtering individuals remained stable from SPM = 6.5 to 55.5 mg L− 1. These values were applied at the scale of the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel (France) to demonstrate that the filtration pressure of large populations of wild suspension-feeders should not be underestimated when the carrying capacity has to be assessed in the context of increasing bivalve cultures.  相似文献

Coastal habitat loss has led to declines in many higher trophic level predators. These declines can be mitigated through habitat restoration, which putatively enhances predator populations and trophic dynamics by creating foraging opportunities in reestablished habitat, but this lacks empirical support. Here, we assess the prediction restored coastal habitat supports sportfish feeding relationships similar to natural habitat, at restored oyster reefs (Crassostrea virginica) and living shoreline habitats in Florida, U.S.A. Stable isotopes and gut contents were analyzed from young sportfish (i.e. predatory fish targeted by anglers) collected at control and restored sites for up to 3 years. The influence of habitat features, predator size, and prey availability on carbon and nitrogen isotope values were examined using a model species (mangrove/gray snapper [Lutjanus griseus]). In summary, sportfish species had distinct isotopic values, consuming similar prey but in different proportions between habitats. Prey abundance and richness, and reef height were influential predictors of L. griseus stable isotope values, with restored reefs contributing to their diet more than controls according to Bayesian mixing models. The trophic niche area of L. griseus and their predominant prey achieved trophic equivalence between restored and natural oyster reefs within 1 year following restoration. Stabilized living shorelines attained trophic equivalency to natural shorelines, but may take longer to accrue prey for some species. These findings generate fundamental ecological knowledge and actionable science, including targets, timelines, and indicator species, that natural resource managers and restoration practitioners can use to assess trophic structure and success of coastal habitat restoration.  相似文献

The community structure of the reef fish fauna of Trindade Island, a volcanic oceanic island located 1160 km off the coast of Brazil, is described based on intensive visual censuses. Seventy-six species were encountered in 252 censuses, with mean ± S.E. of 99 ± 3 individuals and 15.7 ± 0.3 species 40 m(-2) transect. The average fish biomass, calculated from length-class estimation, was 22.1 kg 40 m(-2) transect. The species contributing most to biomass were, in decreasing order, Melichthys niger, Cephalopholis fulva, Kyphosus spp., Holocentrus adscensionis, Sparisoma amplum, Sparisoma axillare, Acanthurus bahianus and Epinephelus adscensionis. Carnivorous fishes were the largest trophic group in terms of biomass, followed by omnivores and roving herbivores. The two predominant types of reef habitat, fringing reefs built by coralline algae and rocky reefs made of volcanic boulders, showed significant differences in the biomass and the abundance of the trophic guilds. Within each habitat type, significant differences in species richness, density and biomass were detected among crest, slope and interface zones. Although similar in overall species composition to coastal reefs in Brazil, the fish fauna of Trindade Island shares certain characteristics, such as a high abundance of planktivores, with other Brazilian oceanic islands. Despite comparatively high fish biomass, including the macro-carnivorous species habitually targeted by fisheries, signs of overfishing were evident. These findings highlight the urgency for a conservation initiative for this isolated, unique and vulnerable reef system.  相似文献

Aim To investigate how reef fish trophic structure responds to latitudinal changes, using a simple model: the extensive Brazilian coast. Location Six Brazilian tropical and subtropical coral and rocky coastal reefs, and the oceanic island of Atol das Rocas, between latitudes 0° and 27° S. Methods Underwater visual census data collected by the authors (five locations) or obtained from the literature (two locations) were used to estimate the relative abundance of 123 fish species belonging to 33 reef‐associated families. Cryptic species were excluded from the analysis. Fishes were grouped in eight trophic categories: roving herbivores, territorial herbivores, mobile invertebrate feeders, sessile invertebrate feeders, omnivores, planktivores, piscivores and carnivores. After a series of detailed predictions based on phylogeny, physiological constraints and anthropogenic impacts was established, the community trophic structure was analysed along a latitudinal gradient and among coastal, mid‐shore and oceanic sites. Results The trophic structure of Brazilian reef fish assemblages clearly changed with latitude. Roving herbivores such as scarids and acanthurids were proportionally more abundant at low latitudes. The browsing herbivores kyphosids followed an opposite latitudinal pattern. The parrotfish genus Sparisoma, more plastic in its feeding habits than Scarus, presented wider distribution. The relative abundance of territorial herbivores did not decrease towards higher latitudes. Mobile invertebrate feeders were the most important (in low latitudes) or the second most important trophic guild (in high latitudes) at all coastal sites. Sessile invertebrate feeders did not show any clear latitudinal trend, despite an expected increase in abundance towards low latitudes. Omnivores dominated high latitude reefs (27° S) and planktivores the oceanic island Atol das Rocas. Piscivores and carnivores were proportionally better represented in high latitudes. Main conclusions Latitudinal patterns seem to be influenced by phylogeny, physiological constraints (mainly related to temperature), and also by anthropogenic impacts. Grazing scarids and acanthurids are largely restricted to tropical reefs and show an abrupt decline beyond 23° S. This does not reflect the amount of algae present, but probably temperature‐dependent physiological constraints. Other herbivores seem to overcome this through symbiotic microbial digestive processes (kyphosids), manipulating the structure of algal turfs or increasing animal protein from within the territory (pomacentrids). Omnivores dominate the southern sites Arraial do Cabo and Arvoredo, being more adapted to environment constraints related to seasonal and/or stochastic shifts. Large carnivores (including piscivores) extend farther into high‐latitude habitats, apparently not constrained by thermal thresholds that limit the herbivores. Overfishing and/or ornamental harvesting certainly has been modifying local fish communities, but could not be detected properly at the large‐scale patterns found in this study. The data presented put in evidence for the first time how reef fish trophic structure behave in the extensive south‐western Atlantic latitudinal gradient.  相似文献

The assignment of zinc bound to carbonic anhydrase isoenzymes (CA-I and CA-II) and Cu2 Zn2 superoxide dismutase (SOD1) was investigated in the hemolysates from 21 normal male subjects. Sufficient care was taken to remove leukocytes and platelets. The following values of zinc distribution were obtained: total zinc, 113.8 +/- 22.7 (mean +/- S.E.) micrograms X 100 ml-1; CA-I-derived zinc, 866.6 +/- 26.2 micrograms X 100 ml-1; CA-II-derived zinc, 99.9 +/- 3.9 micrograms X 100 m-1; SOD1-derived zinc, 60.3 +/- 1.9 micrograms X 100 ml-1; the other zinc, 87.0 +/- 12.6 micrograms X 100 ml-1. Namely, 7.6% of the zinc in human erythrocytes is not bound to the carbonic anhydrases and Cu2Zn2 superoxide dismutase, but present in available form or attached to other enzymes.  相似文献

The gastropod genus Conus is shown to be among many marine taxa that attain maximal known diversity along the northeast coast of Papua New Guinea. Thirty-six species co-occurred on the reef platform fringing Laing Island in Hansa Bay, 33% more than previously documented on any single reef. Near Madang, 32 species occurred on four small reefs. Maximal density at both sites was 3/m2, with overall density 0.1-0.2/m2. Species richness, diversity, and general patterns of microhabitat use were similar at both, but composition differed markedly. Only 23 species were found at both sites, and proportional similarity was 44%. The most common species at each site were uncommon at the other. The diets of 34 species were determined; 26, including the most abundant, preyed exclusively on polychaetes. As on other Indo-Pacific reefs, species partitioned prey types more finely than substrate types. Among vermivores, a different polychaete dominated the diet of each predator. Other species specialized on an enteropneust, other gastropods, and fishes. Most prey were herbivores or deposit feeders, indicating that the major trophic role of Conus species in the reef community is as primary carnivores. The results suggest that species are not more specialized than where fewer congeners co-occur, but rather overlap somewhat more in resource use.  相似文献

The diets of the most conspicuous reef‐fish species from northern Patagonia, the carnivorous species Pseudopercis semifasciata, Acanthistius patachonicus, Pinguipes brasilianus and Sebastes oculatus were studied. Pinguipes brasilianus had the narrowest diet and most specialized feeding strategy, preying mostly on reef‐dwelling organisms such as sea urchins, limpets, bivalves, crabs and polychaetes. The diet of A. patachonicus was characterized by the presence of reef and soft‐bottom benthic organisms, mainly polychaetes, crabs and fishes. Pseudopercis semifasciata showed the broadest spectrum of prey items, preying upon reef, soft‐bottom and transient organism (mainly fishes, cephalopods and crabs). All S. oculatus guts were empty, but stable‐isotope analyses suggested that this species consumed small fishes and crabs. In general, P. brasilianus depended on local prey populations and ate different reef‐dwelling prey than the other species. Pseudopercis semifasciata, A. patachonicus and probably S. oculatus, however, had overlapping trophic niches and consumed resources from adjacent environments. The latter probably reduces the importance of food as a limiting resource for these reef‐fish populations, facilitating their coexistence in spite of their high trophic overlap.  相似文献

 Coralline-algal frameworks from Atol das Rocas reefs were sampled along windward and leeward transects, and multivariate statistical analysis was used to investigate the composition and community structure of the encrusting community. The following components of the reefs were identified in slabbed and polished reef blocks sampled along each transect: encrusting coralline algae dominated by Porolithon cf. pachydermum, vermetid gastropods, Homotrema rubrum, acervulinid foraminiferans, molluscs, corals, polychaete tubes, clionid sponge borings, polychaete/sipunculid borings, cemented sediments, and growth cavities. Q-mode cluster analysis correctly classified 78% of all windward samples and 69% of all leeward samples, and R-mode separated reef components adapted to high wave energy environments from those adapted to low wave energy. Separate classification and ordination of samples from each transect indicate that seriation breakdown occurs in the windward reef between 25 and 45 m from the reef front. In the leeward reef between 75 and 90 m from the leeward reef front, seriation breakdown was not found to be significant. These results confirm that seriation (zonation) is best developed in the windward reef, as has been documented in coral-dominated reefs. Accepted: 28 February 2000  相似文献

We studied faunal remains from archaeological sites on five Caribbean islands, each with an early (1,850-1,280 years B.P.) and late (1,415-560 years B.P.) occupation. On each of these islands (Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. Martin, Saba, and Nevis), the mean size of reef fishes in the faunal remains declined from the early to the late occupation. The large samples from sites on St. Thomas and Nevis allowed examination of the size distribution of individual taxa. Samples of obligate reef fishes (Scaridae, Acanthuridae, Lutjanidae, and Serranidae) showed large reductions in size between the early and late occupations. Samples of facultative reef fishes (Carangidae and Clupeidae) showed little change in size frequency distribution. The percentage of estimated reef fish biomass in the total aquatic faunal record sharply declined in the samples from four of the islands, while on Nevis there was a slight increase. The mean trophic level of reef fishes declined from the early to the late occupations on each island. Together these patterns suggest that populations of reef fishes adjacent to occupation sites on these islands were heavily exploited in prehistoric times. Such exploitation resulted in shifts in size structure and species composition among the reef fish fauna. On some islands the decline in reef fish resources corresponded with a shift towards greater exploitation of pelagic species.  相似文献

Oyster reefs are among the most threatened coastal habitat types, but still provide critical habitat and food resources for many estuarine species. The structure of oyster reef food webs is an important framework from which to examine the role of these reefs in supporting high densities of associated fishes. We identified major trophic pathways to two abundant consumers, gray snapper (Lutjanus griseus) and crested goby (Lophogobius cyprinoides), from a subtropical oyster reef using stomach content and stable isotope analysis. The diet of gray snapper was dominated by crabs, with shrimp and fishes also important. Juvenile gray snapper fed almost entirely on oyster reef-associated prey items, while subadults fed on both oyster reef- and mangrove-associated prey. Based on trophic guilds of the gray snapper prey, as well as relative δ13C values, microphytobenthos is the most likely basal resource pool supporting gray snapper production on oyster reefs. Crested goby had omnivorous diets dominated by bivalves, small crabs, detritus, and algae, and thus were able to take advantage of prey relying on production from sestonic, as well as microphytobenthos, source pools. In this way, crested goby represent a critical link of sestonic production to higher trophic levels. These results highlight major trophic pathways supporting secondary production in oyster reef habitat, thereby elucidating the feeding relationships that render oyster reef critical habitat for many ecologically and economically important fish species.  相似文献
