We employed DNA sequence variation at two mitochondrial (control region, COI) regions from 212 individuals of Galaxias platei (Pisces, Galaxiidae) collected throughout Patagonia (25 lakes/rivers) to examine how Andean orogeny and the climatic cycles throughout the Quaternary affected the genetic diversity and phylogeography of this species. Phylogenetic analyses revealed four deep genealogical lineages which likely represent the initial division of G. platei into eastern and western lineages by Andean uplift, followed by further subdivision of each lineage into separate glacial refugia by repeated Pleistocene glacial cycles. West of the Andes, refugia were likely restricted to the northern region of Patagonia with small relicts in the south, whereas eastern refugia appear to have been much larger and widespread, consisting of separate northern and southern regions that collectively spanned most of Argentinean Patagonia. The retreat of glacial ice following the last glacial maximum allowed re‐colonization of central Chile from nonlocal refugia from the north and east, representing a region of secondary contact between all four glacial lineages. Northwestern glacial relicts likely followed pro‐glacial lakes into central Chilean Patagonia, whereas catastrophic changes in drainage direction (Atlantic → Pacific) for several eastern palaeolakes were the likely avenues for invasions from the east. These mechanisms, combined with evidence for recent, rapid and widespread population growth could explain the extensive contemporary distribution of G. platei throughout Patagonia.  相似文献

Changes in lake and stream habitats during the growth and retreat of Pleistocene glaciers repeatedly altered the spatial distributions and population sizes of the aquatic fauna of the southern Andes. Here, we use variation in mtDNA control region sequences to infer the temporal dynamics of two species of southern Andean fish during the past few million years. At least five important climate events were associated with major demographic changes: (i) the widespread glaciations of the mid-Pliocene (c. 3.5 Ma); (ii) the largest Patagonian glaciation (1.1 Ma); (iii) the coldest Pleistocene glaciation as indicated by stacked marine delta(18)O (c. 0.7 Ma); (iv) the last southern Patagonian glaciation to reach the Atlantic coast (180 ka); and (v) the last glacial maximum (LGM, 23-25,000 years ago). The colder-water inhabitant, Galaxias platei, underwent a strong bottleneck during the LGM and its haplotype diversity coalesces c. 0.7 Ma. In contrast, the more warm-adapted and widely distributed Percichthys trucha showed continuous growth through the last two glacial cycles but went through an important bottleneck c. 180,000 years ago, at which time populations east of the Andes may have been eliminated. Haplotype diversity of the most divergent P. trucha populations, found west of the Andes, coalesces c. 3.2 Ma. The demographic timelines obtained for the two species thus illustrate the continent-wide response of aquatic life in Patagonia to climate change during the Pleistocene, but also show how differing ecological traits and distributions led to distinctive responses.  相似文献

Synopsis We examined the diet of Channa limbata, a predatory fish from western Thailand, in relation to mass, mouth and body morphology and intestine length. The cluster analysis we performed on the prey-specific abundance values of the dietary items yielded four size-classes based on diet. There was a shift from detritus and smaller benthic invertebrates in the diet of the first size class, to a mainly piscivorous diet in the fourth size-class as well as a steep increase in mass at the onset of piscivory. We found no significant change in relative intestine length with ontogeny, and the average relative intestine length value for C. limbata indicated primarily carnivorous feeding habits throughout ontogeny. Ontogenetic changes in mouth dimensions account primarily for the shift in diet, however the ontogenetic change in body morphology is of secondary importance.  相似文献

Morphological and genetic analyses of populations of two non-diadromous galaxiid species, the black mudfish and Neochanna heleios , the dwarf inanga Galaxias gracilis confirm the presence of a cryptic species, Neochanna heleios , within the geographic range of N. diversus , and indicate three distinct evolutionarily significant units (ESUs) in the latter species. Comparisons between G. gracilis and its parent taxon, G. maculatus , reveal that the former is not monophyletic and derives from three separate founding events. Significant morphological divergence between these two species is the result of ontogenic shifts in landlocked lacustrine populations and long-term morphological convergence in populations of G. gracilis. . Corresponding incipient changes are recognized in other younger landlocked populations of G. maculatus in New Zealand. These populations and the three groups within G. gracilis should be given the status of ESUs and managed accordingly by conservation agencies.  相似文献

Field work commonly involves preserving samples for later use; however, most preservation methods distort stable‐isotope (SI) signatures that are of interest to ecologists. Although preservation of muscle samples with table salt and rubbing alcohol affected the SI (δ13C and δ15N) of important consumers in Patagonian lakes (molluscs and fishes), variation among individuals and lakes generally exceeded that among preservation treatments. Mathematical corrections for these preservation biases are provided, and a potentially bias‐free preservation by air‐drying is suggested.  相似文献

Six lower order streams in the south‐west of Colombia were sampled on a monthly basis in order to determine the status of Trichomycterus species in relation to their food supply (macroinvertebrates), and physico‐chemical habitat. Fishes were sampled by electrofishing and samples taken for dietary analysis. Macroinvertebrates were collected using a Surber sampler. Trichomycterus spp. populations were present in all streams in habitats ranging from soft to hard substrata and from relatively stagnant waters to fast flowing streams. The average density of the fishes ranged from 0·06 to 1·14 individuals m−2 with peaks in population corresponding to recruitment of individuals of <1 g. Trichomycterus spp. were found to be benthic carnivores with a diet mostly of aquatic insects. The index of relative importance for the dietary items was 35·0, 10·5, 1·9 and 7·8% for Chironomidae, Trichoptera, Ephemeroptera and Oligochaeta respectively. Combined with physical habitat data, ordinations of fishes and macroinvertebrate data suggested that differences in abundance among sites were driven by stream size and flow regime, indicating dominance of the physical habitat, although a high correlation between Trichomycterus spp. and Chironomidae abundances ( r  = 0·81, P  = 0·049) was also recorded.  相似文献

1. Community concordance measures the degree to which patterns in community structure in a set of sites are similar between two different taxonomic groups. Although seldom incorporated into studies of lake ecosystems, aquatic birds can be influenced by the same environmental features of lakes which affect fish and invertebrates, and can interact with these organisms directly as predators, competitors or prey. We surveyed lakes in north-central Alberta, Canada, to determine if co-occurring fish and aquatic bird assemblages displayed concordance, and assessed the relative importance of environmental and biotic factors in contributing to observed concordance.
2. In 41 lakes (3–305 ha), we encountered seven species of fish and thirty-one avian taxa which subsequently were used in multivariate analyses. Fish assemblages dominated by large piscivores were in large deep lakes, whereas fishless lakes and lakes with only small-bodied fish were small and shallow, and thus, prone to winter hypoxia. Bird assemblages displayed three general patterns: (a) small shallow lakes supported a 'core' of widespread species (between three and eight species per lake); (b) large, deep lakes supported more species (between 11 and 16), including large, aerially foraging piscivores; and (c) large, shallow lakes supported the most species (between 15 and 23), including many ducks.
3. Randomization tests of matrix concordance and Mantel tests both showed that fish and bird assemblages were significantly concordant. Concordance reflected the fact that both groups were strongly affected by the same key environmental factors, principally lake size and maximum depth, and to a lesser extent, productivity and geographic isolation. Direct interactions between birds and fish, such as predation and competition, appeared to play much smaller roles in shaping the two assemblages.  相似文献

Scomberomorus niphonius juveniles were fed with alternative prey differing in body shape: elongate and laterally compressed (clupeid or gobiid larvae) and deep‐framed bodies (paralichthyid larvae) in aquaria. The ratio of prey larvae with elongate and laterally compressed body: prey larvae with deep‐framed body in the aquaria was 1 : 1. Piscivory has independently evolved numerous times amongst snakes, and therefore these animals provide a powerful opportunity to test for convergent evolution in a vertebrate feeding system. In this study, we integrate performance trials with comparative methods to test the hypothesis that piscivory drives convergence in trophic morphology and feeding performance among natricine snakes. Within and across species, increasing the relative length of the quadrate bone in the skull is positively and strongly linked to a reduction in the time needed to swallow large fish prey. Thus, our feeding experiments suggest that a longer quadrate bone enables snakes to better conform their head shape to the shape of the prey during swallowing. Ancestral diet reconstructions and phylogenetically corrected multiple regression analyses further reveal that evolutionary increases in piscivory are coupled to the evolution of relatively longer quadrates, and hence improved feeding performance on fish prey in these animals. The exploitation of similar dietary niches drives the evolution of convergent trophic morphologies and feeding performances in natricine snakes.  相似文献

Different animal intraspecific classes commonly differ in their prey selection. Such differences in feeding ecology are thought to reduce resource competition between classes, but other factors (i.e. behavioural, morphological, and physiological differences) also contribute to this widespread phenomenon. Although several studies have correlated the size of the feeding apparatus with prey selection in many animals, few studies have examined how the shape of the feeding apparatus is related to prey selection. Furthermore, even though the dietary regimen of many animals changes during ontogeny, few studies have examined how shape changes in the feeding apparatus may be related to these ontogenetic dietary shifts. Here we address these issues by examining how head shape, head size and prey selection change over ontogeny in adult males, adult females and juveniles of the cottonmouth snake Agkistrodon piscivorus . Our scaling data for head characteristics showed that all head measurements in adult male and female A. piscivorus scaled with significant negative allometry, whereas juvenile head measurements typically scaled isometrically, except for head volume (positive) and head length (negative). Thus, juveniles have relatively broad and high, but short, heads. Large adult male and female A. piscivorus have relatively small head dimensions overall. Thus, juveniles appear to undergo a rapid change in head volume, which subsequently slows considerably as sexual maturity is achieved. However, our multivariate analysis of size-adjusted head dimensions showed that juveniles differed only slightly in their head shape compared with adult male and female A. piscivorus . The zooplancton dynamics and the populations of Boeckella gracilipes Daday of Lake Escondido (Rio Negro, Argentina) were studied from March 1987 to March 1988. Rotifers and Cladocerans showed high densities during spring and summer, while copepods were densest in autumn. The vertical distribution study showed that rotifers prefer upper levels of the water column, while cladocerans and copepods prefer lower levels, especially during thermal stratification. Boeckella gracilipes had a sex ratio biassed toward female, though changes in the sex ratio were observed. The clutch size was high in winter when the proportion of ovigerous females was low. The instantaneous birth rates were low during winter and high in summer. This result is related to the thermal cycle of the lake, by the influence of temperature on egg development time. The mortality rates showed a similar pattern, and maximum values were registered in spring and summer.  相似文献

Piscivory and cannibalism in Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus , were studied in three lakes in northern Norway: Guolasjavri, which contains only charr, Takvatn, where Arctic charr coexist with three-spined sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus and brown trout, Salmo trutta , and Stuorajavri, where whitefish, Coregonus lavarelun dominate a fish community containing six species. The prevalence of piscivory in the Arctic charr populations generally increased with increasing predator size. In all three lakes, many charr larger than 20 cm were piscivorous, but the extent of piscivory and cannibalism varied. The greatest prevalence of cannibalism was found in Guolasjavri, where 27% of charr greater than 20 cm in length had fed upon smaller conspeciflcs. In Takvatn, 5% of charr larger than 20 cm were cannibalistic, and an additional 9% had eaten three-spined sticklebacks. In Stuorajavri, up to 74% of the charr greater than 20 cm had eaten whitefish but cannibalism was not recorded. The possible role of cannibalism in population regulation within Arctic charr populations is considered.  相似文献

The stomach contents of adult brown trout Salmo trutta from Lake Sorell, Tasmania, were analysed during 6 years of increasing turbidity to follow changes in the diet associated with dramatic changes in water clarity. Brown trout were sampled from 1996, when turbidity was 26 NTU, to 2001 when turbidity was 141 NTU. The mean relative volume of stomach contents decreased progressively to 2001, by which time it was only one sixth of that in 1996, and the mean diversity of prey in stomachs decreased from an average of more than six species per stomach in 1996 to one species in 2001. The species composition of stomach contents shifted from domination by the phreatoicid isopod Colubotelson sp., to the galaxiid fish Galaxias auratus and the amphipod Austrochiltonia australis , and then the cladoceran Daphnia carinata . To give an indication of diet changes over a typical yearly cycle in the current turbid state of the lake, a sample was taken from each season from December 2000 to September 2001. Two basic diets were found during the year; brown trout specialized on D. carinata in summer and autumn, and G. auratus in winter and spring. Mean diversity of prey was less than two species per stomach in all samples from 2000 to 2001, except for the sample from spring 2001 when it was 2·2 species per stomach, and the mean relative volume of stomach contents was more than three times greater in winter than any other season. The ways in which high turbidity may have influenced the changes in the brown trout diet observed since 1996 and the patterns evident during the seasons of 2000–2001 are discussed.  相似文献

Ecotype variation in species exhibiting different life history strategies may reflect heritable adaptations to optimize reproductive success, and potential for speciation. Traditionally, ecotypes have, however, been defined by morphometrics and life history characteristics, which may be confounded with individual plasticity. Here, we use the widely distributed and polytypic freshwater fish species brown trout (Salmo trutta) as a model to study piscivorous life history and its genetic characteristics in environmentally contrasting habitats; a large lake ecosystem with one major large and stable tributary, and several small tributaries. Data from 550 fish and 13 polymorphic microsatellites (He = 0.67) indicated ecotype‐specific genetic differentiation (θ = 0.0170, p < .0001) among Bayesian assigned small riverine resident and large, lake migrating brown trout (>35 cm), but only in the large tributary. In contrast, large trout did not constitute a distinct genetic group in small tributaries, or across riverine sites. Whereas life history data suggest a small, river resident and a large migratory piscivorous ecotype in all studied tributaries, genetic data indicated that a genetically distinct piscivorous ecotype is more likely to evolve in the large and relatively more stable river habitat. In the smaller tributaries, ecotypes apparently resulted from individual plasticity. Whether different life histories and ecotypes result from individual plasticity or define different genetic types, have important consequence for conservation strategies.  相似文献

The length, weight and stomach fullness index of salmon parr from a lake were higher than in a fluvial habitat on the same river in northern Finland, but no differences in diet composition were detected between the habitats in August. The present-day faunas of the great African lakes present some of the world's best examples of 'explosive speciation'. Lakes Victoria and Malawi each probably have several hundred endemic species of cichlid fishes. Much can be inferred about the evolution of these fishes from morphology, behaviour and intra-lacustrine distribution and from the fact that they include taxa ranging from local races, through sibling species, to forms that display extensive differentiation. The time taken to acquire specific distinctness can sometimes be accurately defined, but fossil lineages are unknown. A recent study of a fossil sequence of molluscs in the Turkana basin throws new light on the history of African lake faunas. It also claims to have resolved events during speciation. While critical analysis based on our knowledge of living molluscs in this area fails to substantiate this claim, the fossil molluscs complement information provided by the biology of extant fishes and invertebrates and emphasize the importance of these lakes in the study of evolution in living and extinct populations.  相似文献

Multivariate analyses of the diet relationships within fish assemblages resulted in the recognition of five major feeding guilds in shallow (0-9 m) rocky- and soft-bottom habitats on the Swedish west coast. The two habitats had similar guilds that could be broadly described as piscivores, decapod feeders, copepod feeders and amphipod and mollusc feeders. The last guild on the rocky bottom was more strictly one of amphipod feeders, whereas the last guild on soft bottoms consisted of infauna feeders (mainly polychaetes and bivalves). A comparison of the diet of the entire fish assemblages showed that amphipods and gastropods were more prevalent as prey taxa on rocky bottoms, whereas bivalves and teleosts were more common on soft bottoms. A large proportion (12 out of 27 species) of the fish species investigated was found in both habitats. These fish species generally seemed to rely on the same major prey groups in the two habitats, but also included prey taxa characteristic for the habitat in which they resided. Sea trout Salmo trutta , mackerel Scombrus scombrus , saithe Pollachius virens , whiting Merlangius merlangus and cod Gadus morhua were found to be the major piscivores in both the investigated habitats. Herring Clupea harengus and members of the family gobiidae were the most prevalent prey species for piscivores within the rocky- as well as the soft-bottom fish assemblage. A comparison of feeding modes suggested that the fish assemblage on rocky bottoms predominantly (60% of the food items) relied on food found in vegetation. On soft bottoms, the average distribution of food categories among fish species was 44% benthic, 35% pelagic and 21% vegetation-associated food items.  相似文献

Prey consumption rates of piscivorous brown trout Salmo trutta were studied in the Pasvik watercourse, which forms the border between Norway and Russia. Estimates of food consumption in the field were similar to or slightly less than maximum values from a bioenergetic model. The piscivore diet consisted mainly of vendace Coregonus albula with a smaller number of whitefish Coregonus lavaretus . Individual brown trout had an estimated mean daily intake of c . 1·5 vendace and 0·4 whitefish, and a rapid annual growth increment of 7–8 cm year−1. The total population of brown trout >25 cm total length was estimated as 8445 individuals (0·6 individuals ha−1), giving a mean ±  s . e . annual consumption of 1553880 ± 405360 vendace and 439140 ± 287130 whitefish for the whole watercourse. The rapid growth in summer of brown trout >25 cm indicated a high prey consumption rate.  相似文献

Two subspecies of the grasshopper Chorthippus parullelus have distributions that abut in the Pyrenees. We have studied morphological and electrophoretic variation in II populations near Mont Louis, Pyrénées-Orientales, France. The two subspecies differ in several morphological characters and at one enzyme locus, esterase-2, and in this area they hybridize forming a cline in morphology less than 5 km wide. Examination of museum specimens suggests that this hybrid zone extends for most of the length of the Pyrenees, possibly breaking down in the extreme west. As the two subspecies are known to differ in mating behaviour this hybrid zone is well suited to the study of reinforcement.  相似文献
