Taiaro Atoll Lagoon is normally isolated from the ocean, but at least 125 marine fish species of 31 families are present there. We sampled fish larvae in Taiaro Lagoon and the nearby ocean in February 1994 with plankton net, neuston net and light trap to investigate which taxa were completing their life cycles in the lagoon. Concentrations of fish eggs and larvae were very high in the lagoon indicating intense spawning, but larvae of only 18 taxa of 10 families were present. Only six, a callionymid, gobiids, a hemiramphid, a microdesmid, and two pomacentrids, were present across a full range of pelagic sizes, and were clearly completing their pelagic stage in the lagoon. Four other taxa, an apogonid, two labrids and a scarid, were common, but the largest individuals were small (<5 mm) postflexion larvae. These may have been completing their pelagic stage in the lagoon. The remaining lagoonal larvae (eight taxa) were rare and at the preflexion stage, so we could only conclude that they hatched from eggs spawned in the lagoon. Nineteen taxa of 15 families found as adults in the lagoon were present outside the lagoon as larvae, but not inside, suggesting that they may not normally complete their life cycles in the lagoon. Horizontal distributions of larvae in the lagoon are apparently due to the interaction of larval vertical distribution behaviour with a wind-driven countercurrent system. Among sessile marine invertebrates, the dispersion patterns of settling larvae are likely to strongly affect the nature and strength of subsequent intraspecific interactions. We use a recently developed graphical analysis technique to examine in situ spacing among settled larvae of the colonial ascidian Clavelina moluccensis. Larvae were mapped at settlement each day for 1 month at the time of their release from adults. Experimental plots measuring 90×90 mm were located on naturally occurring bare patches of wood on pier pilings which were extensively encrusted with sponges and ascidians. An inclusive one-tailed nearest-neighbour analysis applied at the time of the maximum number of individuals per plot revealed consistent fine-scale regular spacing between settled larvae. Furthermore, a two-tailed goodness-of-fit analysis indicated two modes of spacing: one at about 4.5 mm and the other at around 9 mm. No contact between larvae was observed at settlement and the spatial regularity is interpreted as a response of settling larvae to water-borne cues released from settled individuals. The two modes of spacing indicate the possibility of kin recognition as has been demonstrated for bryozoans. Water-borne cues may also limit local population density, as those plots with a high density of settlers showed a much greater decrease in settlement rate over time than low-density plots. Our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that intraspecific competitive interactions shape the patterns of dispersion of these invertebrates on hard substrata in the field.  相似文献

A computer simulation experiment which attempted to examine the effect of sample size on reproducibility of the effect of treatment was performed on the basis of actual data obtained from the Collaborative Behavioral Teratology Study of the National Center for Toxicological Research. The degree of the treatment effect was assessed in terms of the strength of the association (eta square). The results indicate that sample size has a large effect on the reproducibility of results which are assessed with the magnitude of SD for eta squares obtained from replication experiments. Suitable sample sizes to obtain relatively consistent results across studies were discussed, pointing out that not enough attention has been paid to the effect of sample size in the issue of reproducibility of results in some behavioral teratology studies.  相似文献

We have no standard computer algorithm for the reconstruction of parental genotypes from the data generated by molecular studies of progeny arrays. Here I present a computer program that uses the multilocus genotypes of parents and offspring to reconstruct the genotypes of unknown parents contributing gametes to a progeny array for which one parent is known a priori. A second program performs simulations to assess the reliability of the algorithm under various scenarios. These programs will aid scientists engaged in parentage analyses, particularly in species with large clutches.  相似文献

Natal dispersal is an important life history trait driving variation in individual fitness, and therefore, a proper understanding of the factors underlying dispersal behaviour is critical to many fields including population dynamics, behavioural ecology and conservation biology. However, individual dispersal patterns remain difficult to quantify despite many years of research using direct and indirect methods. Here, we quantify dispersal in a single intensively studied population of the cooperatively breeding chestnut-crowned babbler (Pomatostomus ruficeps) using genetic networks created from the combination of pairwise relatedness data and social networking methods and compare this to dispersal estimates from re-sighting data. This novel approach not only identifies movements between social groups within our study sites but also provides an estimation of immigration rates of individuals originating outside the study site. Both genetic and re-sighting data indicated that dispersal was strongly female biased, but the magnitude of dispersal estimates was much greater using genetic data. This suggests that many previous studies relying on mark-recapture data may have significantly underestimated dispersal. An analysis of spatial genetic structure within the sampled population also supports the idea that females are more dispersive, with females having no structure beyond the bounds of their own social group, while male genetic structure expands for 750 m from their social group. Although the genetic network approach we have used is an excellent tool for visualizing the social and genetic microstructure of social animals and identifying dispersers, our results also indicate the importance of applying them in parallel with behavioural and life history data.  相似文献

Zymography and reverse zymography are widely used techniques for identifying the proteolytic activity of enzymes and the presence of protease inhibitors in polyacrylamide gels. In the current studies, we utilized a fluorescein-isothiocyanate-labeled substrate to develop novel zymographic and reverse zymographic methods for detecting matrix metalloproteinases and tissue inhibitors of the metalloproteinases, respectively. Using a transilluminator, the results can be observed visually without stopping the enzymatic reaction. For this reason, we have named these methods real-time zymography and real-time reverse zymography. These methods have the following advantages compared with conventional protocols: (1) because the reaction can be repeatedly monitored on the polyacrylamide gels, optimization of the incubation time can be achieved without preliminary analyses; (2) higher sensitivity is achieved with a lower amount of substrate than with conventional methods; (3) a semi-quantitative analysis of matrix metalloproteinases is possible. An additional advantage of the real-time reverse zymography is that, because the fluorescence detection is specific for substrate digestion, the inhibitor bands can be easily distinguished from contaminating proteins.  相似文献
