Indirect effects of predators on basal resources in allochthonous-based food webs are poorly understood. We investigated indirect effects of predatory brown trout ( Salmo trutta ) on detritus dynamics in southern beech ( Nothofagus spp.) forest streams in New Zealand through predation on the obligate detritivore, Zelandopsyche ingens (Trichoptera, Oeconesidae). Trout presence/absence and Z. ingens density were manipulated in flow-through tanks to investigate the lethal and sub-lethal effects of trout on litter processing by Z. ingens . An experiment that allowed trout access to Z. ingens showed trout predation reduced densities of Z. ingens resulting in slower breakdown of coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM) and reduced production of fine particulate organic matter (FPOM). A second experiment that prevented trout access to Z. ingens , but allowed the transmission of trout cues, resulted in no change in litter processing rates in the presence of trout. Litter processing rates were higher in high Z. ingens density treatments compared to low density treatments. Thus, trout effects on litter processing were due to reduced Z. ingens densities, not trout-induced modifications to Z. ingens feeding behaviour. Field assays of litter processing rates using artificial leaf packs in natural streams showed significant reductions in CPOM loss in trout streams compared to fishless streams. Z. ingens dominated biomass in fishless stream leaf packs, but a facultative shredder, Olinga feredayi , dominated trout stream leaf packs. Thus, the absence of Z. ingens drove differences in processing rates between trout and fishless streams and the indirect effects of trout on litter processing observed in mesocosms were evident in complex, natural food webs. Overall our study provides evidence that predators can influence resource dynamics in donor-controlled food webs through their effects on consumers.  相似文献

This work investigated the effect of culture medium composition on a biosurfactant production and their total fatty acids content, as well as the surface tension of media, and biomass production by Candida ingens. A factorial experimental design was used to evaluate the combined effect of C/P, C/N(inorganic), C/Fe, C/Mg ratios and yeast extract concentration. The highest biosurfactant production was reached when high C/Fe and high C/P ratio variables were combined; biosurfactant concentration increased by a 3.42 fold. The variable with the highest effect on net decrease surface tension (DeltaST) and fatty acids percentage of C. ingens biosurfactant was yeast extract. The average of DeltaST (25 mN/m) and fatty acids percentage (34.7%) values were enhanced at high yeast extract concentration of 1g/l. The main conclusion of this study was that the culture composition affected the biosurfactant production by C. ingens. It was also observed that the surface tension and total fatty acids of the biosurfactant were modified as the media composition changed.  相似文献

1. In some situations, individuals surviving in environments where predation is intense can grow faster because the benefits of release from intraspecific competition outweigh costs associated with anti-predator responses. Whether these 'thinning' effects of predation occur in detritus-based food webs where resource renewal occurs independently of consumption by consumers was studied. We investigated how effects of predatory brown trout ( Salmo trutta ) on the larvae of the detritivorous stream caddisfly, Zelandopsyche ingens , influenced the size and fecundity of the caddisfly adults.
2. Trout substantially reduced the abundance of Z. ingens larvae, but adult male and female Z. ingens were significantly larger in trout streams compared to fishless streams. Females in trout streams had 33% more eggs than fishless stream females, and egg sizes were not significantly different. In mesocosms, Z. ingens larvae in low density treatments reflecting trout stream abundances grew significantly faster than larvae in high density treatments that were characteristic of fishless stream abundances. Non-lethal trout presence did not influence case building behaviour, feeding rates or growth or Z. ingens larvae, indicating non-lethal effects of predators were negligible.
3. Increased adult size and fecundity associated with trout stream individuals were probably a result of predator thinning of larval density indirectly releasing surviving Z. ingens from intraspecific competition. Thus, predator thinning did influence interactions between larvae in this detritus-based food web as larval growth was strongly density-dependent. However, extrapolating the total number of eggs potentially produced indicates the increased fecundity of females in trout streams would not compensate for losses of larvae to trout predation.  相似文献

Animal husbandry aimed at preventing Macracanthorhynchus hirudinaceus infections in swine is not successful in preventing exposure to Macracanthorhynchus ingens, and it is probable that pigs occasionally acquire acanthocephalans of that species. In some pigs, M. ingens survived 2 weeks and grew several millimeters. In such cases, destruction of villi, erosion of epithelium, leukocytic infiltration, and altered cytological structure at attachment sites accompanied the infection. Penetration was limited to the submucosa, and the effects were not as severe as those occurring in the presence of M. hirudinaceus, which enters the muscularis.  相似文献

The gastrointestinal tracts of 32 free-ranging, 9-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) from north-central Florida were examined for the presence of helminths during July 1991 to November 1993. Aspidodera sp. (Nematoda: Aspidoderidae), most closely resembling Aspidodera sogandaresi, were recovered from 20 of 32 armadillos examined. Total numbers of A. sogandaresi ranged from 1 to 1,021 per infected animal, and followed an inverse correlation to body condition index for those animals. The cystacanth stage of 1 acanthocephalan, Macracanthorhynchus ingens, was present in 1 armadillo, and is the first report of M. ingens in the 9-banded armadillo. The present study contributes to the known natural history of the 9-banded armadillo, an important animal research model.  相似文献

A remarkable new species of bromeliadicolous Hydrophilidae, Omicrus ingens sp.n., is described from Puerto Rico. Notes on the habitat and occurrence of the species are given. Larvae found in association with adult beetles are assigned to the same species and described as such. It is the first known larva of the sphaeridiine tribe Omicrini. Comparative notes are given to other hydrophilid larvae, particularly Sphaeridiinae, and preliminary keys to larvae are presented for known subfamilies of Hydrophilidae and known tribes of Sphaeridiinae.  相似文献

Mitchell, L., Curry, G.B. & Fallick, A.E. 1995 11 30: Stable-isotope and amino acid profiles of the New Zealand giant Pliocene oyster Crassostrea ingens .
Oxygen and carbon stable-isotope profiles and intracrystalline amino acid profiles (free and total) were determined for the New Zealand giant Pliocene oyster Crassostrea ingens by sampling annual growth increments along a sagittal section. These profiles reflect both ontogenetic and environmental change over the life-time of the oyster (approximately 20 years). There is a gradual increase in δ18O from the umbo towards the shell margin and a subsequent levelling-off about halfway along the shell. This pattern probably reflects a decrease in the growth rate of the oyster rather than a temperature effect. The δ13C profile initially increases sharply at the umbo and then gradually decreases towards the shell margin. This may be due to kinetic or metabolic effects associated with the development of a fast-growing juvenile into a slower-growing, sexually mature adult, or it may be due to the influence of 13C-depleted carbon derived from the oxidation of organic matter in the surrounding sediment. The amino acid profile reveals a gradual decrease in abundance from the umbo to the shell margin, indicative of a progressive increase in the relative amounts of inorganic carbonate to protein over the life of the oyster, that may also be a consequence of decreasing growth rate. Glycine and alanine are the two most common amino acids in both the free and total amino acid profiles: free (i.e. naturally hydrolysed) amino acids account for about three quarters of the total amino acids present. □ Biogeochemistiy, stable isotopes, amino acids, environment, ontogeny .  相似文献

Maturation in the onychoteuthid squid Moroteuthis ingens was found to be irreversible, with death following shortly after sexual maturation and spawning. Both males and females were found with spent gonads. The ovary reaches very large sizes in mature females and probably prevents feeding by constricting the caecum. There was also a marked difference in the tissue integrity between immature females and females which had reached sexual maturity. Mature and spent females showed advanced tissue breakdown with individuals having a thin mantle wall with an inelastic, gelatinous appearance. Histological examination of the mantle wall revealed that the tissue breakdown was due to a drastic histolysis of muscle tissue and, to a lesser extent, collagen fibres. Mature males also showed some tissue breakdown and loss of muscle fibres but this was not as dramatic as in the females. These features are considered in relation to processes contributing to terminal maturation in M. ingens.  相似文献

Recently discovered wrist bones of the Malagasy subfossil lemurs Babakotia radofilai, Palaeopropithecus ingens, Mesopropithecus dolichobrachion, and Megaladapis madagascariensis shed new light on the postcranial morphologies and positional behaviors that characterized these extinct primates. Wrist bones of P. ingens resemble those of certain modern hominoids in having a relatively enlarged ulnar head and dorsally extended articular surface on the hamate, features related to a large range of rotation at the inferior radioulnar and midcarpal joints. The scaphoid of P. ingens is also similar to that of the extant tree sloth Choloepus in having an elongate, palmarly directed tubercle forming a deep radial margin of the carpal tunnel for the passage of large digital flexors. In contrast, wrist remains of Megaladapis edwardsi and M. madagascariensis exhibit traits observed in the hands of extant pronograde, arboreal primates; these include a dorsopalmarly expanded pisiform and well-developed "spiral" facet on the hamate. Moreover, Megaladapis spp. and Mesopropithecus dolichobrachion possess bony tubercles (e.g., scaphoid tubercle and hamate hamulus) forming the carpal tunnel that are relatively similar in length to those of modern pronograde lemurs. Babakotia and Mesopropithecus differ from Megaladapis in exhibiting features of the midcarpal joint related to frequent supination and radioulnar deviation of the hand characteristic of animals that use vertical and quadrumanous climbing in their foraging behaviors. Comparative analysis of subfossil lemur wrist morphology complements and expands upon prior inferences based on other regions of the postcranial skeleton, and suggests a considerable degree of locomotor and postural heterogeneity among these recently extinct primates.  相似文献

Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA markers (RAPDs) were applied in a cephalopod population study. Samples of the squid Moroteuthis ingens taken from around the Falkland Islands and Macquarie Island were used to test a null hypothesis that M. ingens forms a single, panmictic population in the Southern Ocean. Six of the 8 arbitrary RAPD primers screened produced a total of 30 reproducible polymorphic bands. Analysis of RAPD allele frequencies demonstrated high levels of variation between individuals but little variation between two sample sites. Although the differentiation between the two sites was low, subtle population structure was detected and the null hypothesis was rejected. The implications of low genetic differentiation between the two sites are briefly discussed in terms of possible egg and paralarval drift facilitated via the circumpolar current.  相似文献

The morphology of the pineal complex was compared in seven species of lanternfishes (family Myctophidae) using both light and electron microscopes. On the basis of compactness of the pineal end-vesicle and presence or absence of a dorsal sac, the species in this study were divided into two groups. This grouping seems to correlate well with current views on the phylogenetic relationships among these fishes. Receptor cells and supportive cells are described in the pineals of all species examined. The deepest-dwelling of the forms studied, Parvilux ingens, showed a significant increase in the mean number of lamellar membranes in the outer segments of the receptor cells and a higher convergence ratio of receptor cells to ganglion cells as compared to the shallow-dwelling form Tarletonbeania crenularis. Accordingly it is suggested that the pineal of P. ingens is more photosensitive. Additional differences among species were found in the ultrastructure of the supportive cells. Dorsal sacs were absent in the three shallowest-occurring myctophids studied. In those species with a dorsal sac, its close association with the pineal-end-vesicle suggests a functional relationship between the two structures.  相似文献

Olfactory Communication and Neighbor Recognition in Giant Kangaroo Rats   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We hypothesized that olfactory communication facilitates neighbor recognition in the giant kangaroo rat, Dipodomys ingens , and is therefore influential in coordinating social interactions in this solitary, desert rodent. We tested whether (i) D. ingens can discriminate between odors of same- and opposite-sex conspecifics; and (ii) the kangaroo rats exhibit scent preferences based on familiarity. In habituation-discrimination tests, we found that both genders distinguish differences between the scent of individuals of the same- and opposite-sex. In olfactory preference tests, both males and females spent significantly more time investigating the scent of their familiar cagemate than the scent of an unfamiliar conspecific. Giant kangaroo rats may be able to recognize familiar neighbors from olfactory cues, thus supporting a hypothesis of neighbor recognition. Neighbor recognition may be an important mechanism of social interactions in this endangered species.  相似文献

A pellicle-forming yeast, identified as Candida ingens, was found to grow on substrates derived from the anerobic fermentation of monogastric animal wastes. The organism used volatile fatty acids C2 to C6 and ammonia nitrogen. It had a preferential uptake of the acids in increasing order of molecular weight, removing 90% of the total titratable volatile acid. The nonwrinkled pellicle had a doubling time of 3.2 h, and the doubling time of the wrinkled pellicle was 4.2 h. Proximate amino acid and nucleic acid analyses suggested that the organism might be acceptable as a source of single cell protein. Its vitamin B group content compared favorably with that of other yeasts. It contained 6% calcium and 7% phosphorus. It could be useful in removing these minerals from effluents as well as in providing them as nutrients in livestock rations.  相似文献

Abstract. A new species of Lyonetiidae, Bucculatrix (Leucoedemiaj ingens subgen.n. and sp.n., is described from South Africa. Although the moth resembles members of the Cemiostominae, its ribbed cocoon is typical of Bucculatrix Zeller. The new species feeds in stem galls on Ozoroa paniculosa (Anacardiaceae) and probably induces their formation. An account of the structure, life-history and phylogeny of the new species is presented, and the reasons for its inclusion in Bucculatrix are given.  相似文献

Segmental tegumental glands in the calanoid copepods Hemidiaptomus ingens provinciae release secretions through pores which are located near the glands. These pores exhibit a partitioned structure. Ultrastructurally, all glands present a syncytial organization and are characterized by a highly developed Golgi apparatus and secretory grains with a heterogeneous structure. Cytochemical tests show that the grains are composed mainly by highly reactive polysaccharides associated with protein granulations alternating with slightly, if at all, reactive polysaccharides. The role of these secretions is still unclear.  相似文献

Clostridium perfringens causes gas gangrene and gastrointestinal disease in humans. These pathologies are mediated by potent extracellular protein toxins, particularly α-toxin and perfringolysin O (PFO). While α-toxin hydrolyzes phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin, PFO forms large transmembrane pores on cholesterol-containing membranes. It has been suggested that the ability of PFO to perforate the membrane of target cells is dictated by how much free cholesterol molecules are present. Given that C. perfringens α-toxin cleaves the phosphocholine headgroup of phosphatidylcholine, we reasoned that α-toxin may increase the number of free cholesterol molecules in the membrane. Our present studies reveal that α-toxin action on membrane bilayers facilitates the PFO?cholesterol interaction as evidenced by a reduction in the amount of cholesterol required in the membrane for PFO binding and pore formation. These studies suggest a mechanism for the concerted action of α-toxin and PFO during C. perfringens pathogenesis.  相似文献

The taxonomy of the North American big-eared bats, genus Corynorhinus, was revised by Handley [Handley, C.O., 1959. A revision of the American bats of the genera Euderma and Plecotus. Proc. U.S. Nat. Mus. 110, 95-246] using a morphological systematics approach. Handley employed 17 morphological characters and identified only four characters that reliably differentiated the three species he recognized, C. townsendii, C. rafinesquii, and C. mexicanus. All three species have been shown to lead relatively sedentary lives and have a wing morphology that limits long-distance dispersal. Further, populations of two species, C. townsendii and C. rafinesquii, are considered to be declining. Handley [Handley, C.O., 1959. A revision of the American bats of the genera Euderma and Plecotus. Proc. U.S. Nat. Mus. 110, 95-246] recognized five subspecies of C. townsendii (C. t. australis, C. t. ingens, C. t. pallescens, C. t. townsendii, and C. t. virginianus) and two of C. rafinesquii (C. r. rafinesquii and C. r. macrotis). Two C. townsendii subspecies, C. t. ingens and C. t. virginianus, are listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act. These facts and the lack of a thorough molecular systematic examination of this genus were the impetus for this study. Using mitochondrial and nuclear intron DNA sequences, a molecular phylogeny was inferred. The combined DNA phylogeny supports Handley's [Handley, C.O., 1959. A revision of the American bats of the genera Euderma and Plecotus. Proc. U. S. Nat. Mus. 110, 95-246] designation of three species. Further the endangered subspecies, C. t. ingens and C. t. virginianus are corroborated, as were the monophyly of the other subspecies. However, the geographical ranges of two of these subspecies, C. t. pallescens and C. t. townsendii, are revised based on biogeographic distributions as understood from our results. Estimates of timing of divergences indicate that the three species, C. townsendii, C. rafinesquii, and C. mexicanus may have diverged before Pleistocene climatic oscillations began, and therefore their cladogenesis was not the result of those processes. However, subspecific divergences within C. townsendii appear to have occurred during and been driven largely by the climatic processes of the Pleistocene Epoch. We propose new hypotheses of dispersal scenarios that may have led to the current biogeography of these lineages.  相似文献

Seventy raccoons (Procyon lotor) from western Kentucky were examined for helminths from December 1985 through May 1986. Twenty-three species of helminths were collected including 10 species of Trematoda (Brachylaima virginiana, Euryhelmis squamula, Eurytrema procyonis, Fibricola cratera, Gyrosoma singulare, Maritreminoides nettae, Mesostephanus appendiculatoides, Metagonimoides oregonensis, Paragonimus kellicotti, Pharyngostomoides procyonis), 2 species of Cestoda (Atriotaenia procyonis, Mesocestoides variabilis), 10 species of Nematoda (Arthrocephalus lotoris, Baylisascaris procyonis, Capillaria putorii, C. plica, Crenosoma goblei, Dracunculus insignis, Gnathostoma procyonis, Molineus barbatus, Physaloptera rara, Trichinella spiralis), and 1 species of Acanthocephala (Macracanthorhynchus ingens). A mean of 6.4 (3-11) helminth species per host was recorded. Fibricola cratera, Atriotaenia procyonis, Mesocestoides variabilis, Arthrocephalus lotoris, Capillaria plica, Dracunculus insignis, Molineus barbatus, and Physaloptera rara were ubiquitous parasites of the raccoon, whereas specific nidi were observed for Eurytrema procyonis, Gyrosoma singulare, Paragonimus kellicotti, Baylisascaris procyonis, Trichinella spiralis, and Macracanthorhyncus ingens. With an overall prevalence of 10% or higher, 15 of the 23 helminth species were considered common parasites of the raccoon in western Kentucky. When the 10% prevalence rate was applied within geographical quadrants to correct for the presence of nidi it was found that 18 of the 23 helminth species were common and 5 were regarded as rare parasites of the raccoon. Two species of nematodes, T. spiralis and B. procyonis, displayed a markedly higher prevalence in male raccoons.  相似文献
