Glirids are arboreal rodents that are difficult to monitor due to their nocturnal activity and their relatively low density. We compared results from footprint tunnels with those from two other monitoring methods (nest boxes and nesting tubes) for three dormouse species in an occupancy framework. Footprint tunnels performed better than the other two methods for the hazel dormouse Muscardinus avellanarius and the edible dormouse Glis glis, and were the only method which detected the garden dormouse Eliomys quercinus. Our findings provide evidence to support the effectiveness of footprint tunnels in monitoring the occurrence of dormouse species in comparison with other methods.  相似文献

The dormouse Eliomys quercinus is a forest rodent undergoing long periods of winter hibernation. The species presents a surprisingly large diversity of chromosomal races, which geographic distribution was shown recently to predate the Pleistocene glaciations. Previously reported data on the karyotypes of the garden dormouse in France come from the northeast of the country, where the 2N?=?50 race occurs. New data are presented from specimens trapped near the Atlantic coast (departments of Vendée and Charente-Maritime), in the Pyrenees, the Alps and in the Massif Central. The French Alpine chain, close to the Italian border, is inhabited by the 2N?=?54 race. A karyotype with 2N?=?48 chromosomes, of Iberian type, is found north of the Pyrenees, near the central Atlantic coast and also in the south of the Massif Central, whereas the 2N?=?50 race occurs in the north of the massif. A hybrid between these two races (2N?=?49) was found in Vendée. These facts reveal that neither the Pyrenees nor the Alps constitute a biogeographic barrier to the dormouse and strongly suggest that the present population of northern France derives from a postglacial recolonisation movement initiated in the southernmost regions of France or in the Rhône valley.  相似文献

Two cytotypes (2n = 36 and 38) of blind mole rats, Nannospalax xanthodon (Nordmann, 1840), from the Ayd?n and Manisa provinces in Turkey were investigated. Conventional chromosome staining, Ag-NOR staining and C-banding analysis were carried out. From the cytogenetic point of view, the particular phylogenetic position of these populations is supported by their low diploid numbers only, and the Cbanding pattern and the NORs distribution seem generally similar to populations with higher chromosome numbers. Several autosomal pairs with centromeric dark Cbands were observed in the 2n=36 cytotype. One autosomal pair possessed an interstitial dark C-band on the short arm; another pair possessed an interstitial dark Cband on the long arm. Whole C-heterochromatic short arms were observed in three subtelocentric autosomal pairs in the 2n=38 cytotype. Most of the other autosomal pairs possessed centromeric dark C-bands. Distinct dark C-bands were observed also in the presumed X chromosomes of both the cytotypes. The Ag-NOR regions were found on three autosomal pairs of both the cytotypes. These sites were located in telomeric areas of the short arms of two subtelocentric and one submetacentric pair.  相似文献

A karyotype of 2n = 52 chromosomes was found in twoEliomys quercinus (Linnaeus, 1766) specimens from two different localities of Tirol (Austria). The karyotype is similar to the one described in the Italian Alps, suggesting that these mountains were not a barrier to the northern expansion of this chromosomal race.  相似文献

Aim To investigate the chronology, causes and consequences of the extinction of the autochthonous Pleistocene small mammals of Mallorca. Location Mallorca (Gymnesic Islands, Balearics, Western Mediterranean). Methods We have obtained the first direct 14C ages from the bone collagen of selected samples of two extinct endemic small mammals from Mallorca: the Balearic dormouse, Eliomys morpheus (Rodentia: Myoxidae) and the Balearic shrew, Asoriculus hidalgoi (Soricomorpha: Soricidae). We also present evidence for the absence of both endemics from the earliest Mallorcan archaeological sites and for the introduction of the garden dormouse, Eliomys quercinus, and the wood mouse, Apodemus sylvaticus. Combined information from direct dating of bone collagen of E. quercinus and A. sylvaticus and from cultural associations provides an adequate framework to establish the chronology of the faunal change and to compare it with the chronological information available on climatic change and the first arrival of humans on the islands. Results The chronological record includes the latest evidence available for the survival of endemic species and the earliest introduction of small mammals into Mallorca. We present ‘uncertainty periods for extinction’ (UPEs) of both endemic mammals based on the chronology of their last occurrence and on the inferred timing of their extinction (restricted UPEs). Main conclusions Possible causes for the extinction of autochthonous small mammals on Mallorca are discussed. Once we have discarded climatic causes, predation by invasive species, competition with newcomers and habitat deterioration, the introduction of diseases emerges as the most reasonable explanation for these extinctions. Based on the identification of changes in keystone species in Mallorcan ecosystems, we propose a tentative schedule of key ecological changes that have taken place over the past 5 millennia.  相似文献

A new karyotype for blind mole rats was recorded in Tunceli province in Eastern Turkey. The karyotype contained 44 chromosomes, including 13 biarmed pairs, 7 acrocentric pairs, and one heteromorphic pair with a submetacentric and an acrocentric homologue in the autosomal complement (FNa=69). The X chromosome was submetacentric and the Y chromosome medium-sized subtelocentric (FN=73). Distinct dark centromeric C-bands were observed on most of the biarmed and three pairs of the acrocentric autosomes. The NORs were detected on short arms of three subtelocentric pairs and one acrocentric pair of autosomes. The diploid number of chromosomes and the karyotype characteristics observed are obviously unique among hitherto studied populations of blind mole rats and the complement can be evaluated as a new chromosome race of Nannospalax xanthodon. The distribution ranges of individual chromosome races of the species recorded in Eastern Anatolia are revised and possible interracial hybridization is discussed in respect of the finding of a new race.  相似文献

C-, and G-banded chromosomes are presented for Perognathus amplus and Perognathus longimembris from Arizona, USA and Chaetodipus nelsoni from Coahuila, Mexico. The two species of Perognathus reveal similar C-band patterns, and extensive autosomal and X chromosome G-band identity with only pericentric inversions distinguishing pairs 4 and 6 and a difference in the morphology of pair 20. Three pairs of autosomal secondary constrictions were found in P. amplus and only one in P. longimembris. Only 50% of the amplus/longimembris G-banded karyotype could be aligned with that of C. nelsoni indicating extensive chromosomal restructuring has taken place since these genera last shared a common ancestor. A review of the literature suggests variable rates of morphological, chromosomal and molecular evolution in these animals.  相似文献

Chromosome banding (G-, C- and Ag-NOR) analysis was carried out on 27 specimens of Sphalax ehrenbergi from seven localities and two specimens of S. leucodon from one locality, all from Turkey. No chromosomal variation was detected in S. ehrenbergi populations from Elazig, Siverek, Diyarbakir and Birecik having the same diploid numbers (2n = 52) and morphology of chromosomes (NFa = 72). The karyotypes of mole rats from Tarsus and Gaziantep possessed the identical diploid number (2n = 56) but different numbers of autosomal arms: NFa = 68 in the Tarsus and NFa = 78 in the Gaziantep populations. Chromosomes of S. leucodon from Malaty (2n = 60, NFa = 74) differed distinctly in the C-banding pattern from all S. ehrenbergi cytotypes by the almost entire absence of heterochromatin in acrocentric autosomes and the presence of heterochromatin arms iin subtelocentric autosomes. Nucleolar organizing regions were found mainly on three pairs of chromosomes, but some differences in their localization were revealed. Comparison of G-banded chromosomes showed, that most chromosomes have a similar pattern. The types of chromosomal rearrangemetns were revealed due to the banding methods.  相似文献

G- and C-banded karyotypes of the two extant species of the mammalian order Proboscidea are presented for the first time. Chromosome complements were 2n = 56 in both Loxodonta africana and Elephas maximus. Comparisons between the species demonstrated a high level of chromosome band homology, with 26 conserved autosomal pairs. The normal diploid karyotype of L. africana had 25 acrocentric/telocentric and two metacentric/submetacentric autosomal pairs. E. maximus differed by having one less acrocentric and one additional submetacentric pair due to either a heterochromatic arm addition or deletion involving autosomal pair 27. Several acrocentric autosomes of L. africana exhibited small short arms that were absent in homologous chromosomes of E. maximus. The X chromosomes in both species were large submetacentric elements and were homologous. However, the small acrocentric Y chromosomes differed; in E. maximus it was slightly larger and had more distinct G-bands than its counterpart in L. africana. Extant Elephantidae appear to be relatively conservative in their rates of chromosomal change compared to some other mammalian families. The high-quality banded karyotypes presented here should prove useful as references in future chromosome analyses of elephant populations and in comparative cytogenetic studies with other ungulate orders.  相似文献

Summary Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] chromosomes were analyzed using the chromosome image analyzing system, CHIAS, and seven groups, including subgroups, were identified based on morphological characteristics. Two pairs of chromosomes were conspicuous in their morphological traits. One pair of chromosomes, which had the largest arm ratio among all the chromosomes, was commonly observed in the species in all three subgenera of the genus Glycine. These chromosomes also displayed a unique pattern after N-banding and were detected as marker chromosomes. G. soja, which is considered to be the ancestor of G. max, has two types of marker chromosomes. The lines that carry the same type as G. max may be the ancestors of G. max among the lines of G. soja. The morphological differences of the marker chromosomes within the species in the subgenus Soja are discussed in relation to the domestication process of soybean.  相似文献

More than 3500 fleas, collected in southern Belgium, from 54 garden dormice (Eliomys quercinus) and from 58 nests of the rodent, were examined. Ceratophyllus s. sciurorum seems to be the only regular and abundant flea on the garden dormouse and in its nest whereas Myoxopsylla laverani is quite uncommon (5/31 infested animal and 11/52 infested nests). In comparison, 96 garden dormice were checked in France. M. laverani is present on nearly every infested animal (61/66). Other fleas were also found, some mammal-fleas (Megabothris turbidus, Hystrichopsylla talpae, several Ctenophthalmus spp.) and great numbers of bird-fleas (Ceratophyllus gallinae and Dasypsyllus gallinulae) because the dormouse-nests where the fleas were taken were built on old tit-nests (Parus spp). Finally, Schizophthirus pleurophaeus, a louse, was collected for the first time in Belgium.  相似文献

The chromosome complements of 188 specimens of 29 species of Australian murid rodents belonging to the subfamilies Pseudomyinae and Hydromyinae and the Uromys/Melomys group have been compared. At least one specimen of 18 different species was successfully C-banded. — The autosomal complements of many (9) diverse Pseudomyinae, one species of Melomys and one Hydromyinae proved to be identical, comprising 48 elements in the diploid set, the two smallest autosomal pairs of which are metacentric. No other karyotype is common to more than one species. From this we conclude that these three groups have been derived from a common ancestor which also possessed such a karyotype. The genus Zyzomys is exceptional since it possesses only 44 elements and lacks the two smallest metacentrics. — Karyotypic evolution within this apparently single phyletic line has been remarkably conservative, only three rearrangements being required to derive the most divergent karyotype. Moreover most of the observed rearrangements involve pericentric inversions and only one example of a fusion was found. Considerable differences in heterochromatin content, as determined by C-banding, occur between species however. Two species proved exceptional in this respect, namely Notomys cervinus and Uromys caudimaculatus. N. cervinus possesses numerous heterochromatic short arms. In U. caudimaculatus, there is a striking difference between northern and southern populations; in the former heterochromatin is present principally in the telomeric areas of the conventional A-chromosomes whereas in the latter it is found as separate supernumerary chromosomes. — In contrast to the autosomes, the X and Y chromosomes show high inter- and intra-specific variability in both size and morphology. All of this variability can be explained in terms of variation in heterochromatin content. Moreover the amount of heterochromatin in the X and Y chromosomes is highly correlated both within and between species. The Y chromosome of Uromys caudimaculatus is, however, distinctive in that it lacks C-banding.  相似文献

Bufo bufo verrucosissima has a karyotype consisting of 22 chromosomes (6 pairs of large and 5 pairs of small chromosomes which are meta- and submetacentric). By means of Ag-AS-staining nucleolar organizers were localized in the telomeric region of the long arms of the 6th pair of chromosomes. The karyotype differs from those of the other B. bufo subspecies by the form of the 4th pair, which is metacentric. A slight chromosomal polymorphism was shown also after C-banding of B. b. verrucosissima and B. b. bufo chromosomes.  相似文献

The chromosomes (2n = 2x = 24) of Larix principis-rupprechtii are composed of six pairs of large metacentrics and six pairs of medium-sized submetacentrics. The identification of homologous pairs is hampered by their high degree of similarity at the morphological level in each group. As one of the most extensively used methods in molecular cytogenetics producing chromosome landmarks, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) has significantly facilitated karyotype construction, especially in species with morphologically similar chromosomes. This study developed a simple but effective use of combinatorial labeling probes to distinguish chromosomes of Larix principis-rupprechtii by multicolor FISH. Three highly repetitive sequences in Larix were selected: 25S rDNA hybridized at all of the secondary constrictions of two pairs of metacentrics and the largest pair of submetacentrics; 5S rDNA hybridized at subtelomeric sites of one pair of metacentrics that also harboured 25S rDNA on different arms; LPD family sequences are tandem repeats hybridized at proximal regions of 22 chromosomes. The three different probes were labeled with only two different labels, hybridized to metaphase chromosomes of Larix principis-rupprechtii, simultaneously visualized, and unequivocally distinguished in a single FISH experiment. These multicolor FISH marks largely improved the karyotype analysis of Larix principis-rupprechtii.  相似文献

The karyotype of Vaillantella maassi, a loach with an unusually long dorsal fin, was investigated using sequential CMA3 and AgNO3 staining to test if this character evolved in parallel with Vaillantella’s morphological distinctness. The karyotype was 2n = 50 with 13 pairs of metacentric-submetacentric and 12 pairs of subtelocentric chromosomes. Sequential CMA3 banding and AgNO3 staining evidenced NORs in the short arms of pair no. 2. Additional CMA3-positive, Ag-negative signals were present in the short arms of pairs 14 and 15. The karyotype paralleled those of most other cobitoid loaches studied so far and is apparently not associated with the morphological distinctness of Vaillantella.  相似文献

Summary Ultrastructural examination of the posterior pituitary of the garden dormouse (Eliomys quercinus L.) was carried out at different times in the annual cycle of this hibernating rodent. Obvious differences between experimental groups have not been observed, and the results presented here must be considered as general features of the garden dormouse posterior pituitary. Neurosecretory axons and endings can be divided into two types, according to different aspects of neurosecretory granules (NSG) and microvesicles (MV). One type contains spherical NSG with homogeneous cores and round MV. In the other type, NSG have various, often elongated, shapes. Their content shows two types of crystalline structures and most of the MV have flattened aspects. As it is very unlikely that this duality in NSG is a result of an artefact of fixation, three hypotheses are presented as explanation. The duality of NSG might be related either to their hormonal content (oxytocin or vasopressin) or to their degree of maturation. Moreover, both explanations may be valid. Results of a karyological study of Juniperus communis L. populations under swamp and dry conditions are presented. The chromosome number of J. communis are 2n = 22. Analysis of morphological chromosome parameters showed a similarity between karyotypes of both populations. It is possible to identify one pair of asymmetric chromosomes (VIII pair); this chromosome pair is close to submetacentric type. Three pairs of chromosomes (I, VII, VIII) have secondary constrictions. Other metacentric chromosomes form groups of five long (II--VI) and three short (IX-XI) pairs. Differences between two populations in absolute chromosomal length are observed.  相似文献

Insular gigantism—evolutionary increases in body size from small-bodied mainland ancestors—is a conceptually significant, but poorly studied, evolutionary phenomenon. Gigantism is widespread on Mediterranean islands, particularly among fossil and extant dormice. These include an extant giant population of Eliomys quercinus on Formentera, the giant Balearic genus †Hypnomys and the exceptionally large †Leithia melitensis of Pleistocene Sicily. We quantified patterns of cranial and mandibular shape and their relationships to head size (allometry) among mainland and insular dormouse populations, asking to what extent the morphology of island giants is explained by allometry. We find that gigantism in dormice is not simply an extrapolation of the allometric trajectory of their mainland relatives. Instead, a large portion of their distinctive cranial and mandibular morphology resulted from the population- or species-specific evolutionary shape changes. Our findings suggest that body size increases in insular giant dormice were accompanied by the evolutionary divergence of feeding adaptations. This complements other evidence of ecological divergence in these taxa, which span predominantly faunivorous to herbivorous diets. Our findings suggest that insular gigantism involves context-dependent phenotypic modifications, underscoring the highly distinctive nature of island faunas.  相似文献

The diploid number of the Rhesus macaque, Macaca mulatta, is 42. All chromosomes are biarmed and all constitutive heterochromatins are centromeric. The diploid number of the African Green monkey, Cercopithecus aethiops, is 60. Again all chromosomes are biarmed, but seven pairs possess very short second arms which are heterochromatic. The heterochromatins of remaining chromosomes are centromeric. Using G-banding and deleting the heterochromatic short arms, the chromosomes of the African Green monkey can be artificially fused to reconstruct a karyotype of the Rhesus with only one pair of unmatched small metacentrics. In addition to the Robertsonian type of translocations, several sets of centromere-telomere translocations were found. The latter type of translocation reduced three arms into two. Thus the fundamental number can be changed by two mechanisms: growing extra heterochromatic arms and the centromere-telomere fusions.  相似文献
