We determined the complete amino acid sequences of the hemoglobin of two species, guinea fowl and California quail, in Galliformes from intact globin chain and chemical cleavage fragments in order to analyze the molecular evolution of hemoglobin for the classification of Galliformes. Galliformes have two types of hemoglobin components, HbA and HbD, which consist of identical chain and different chains. The sequences are similar to globin chains of Galliformes reported previously. These sequences were compared with those of other Galliformes (Phasianidae, Meleagrididae) using duck and goshawk as out-groups. The phylogenetic tree of major groups of Galliformes based on hemoglobin was similar to the tree model produced based on the amino acid sequence of lysozyme c.  相似文献

Paternal behavior greatly affects the survival, social development, and cognitive development of infants. Nevertheless, little research has been done to assess how paternal experience modifies the behavioral characteristics of fathers, including fear and stress responses to a novel environment. We investigated long-term behavioral and physiologic effects of parental experience in mice (Peromyscus californicus) and how this response activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (as measured by corticosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone [DHEA] levels) and interacts with anxiety-related behaviors. Three groups of adult males were tested--fathers exposed to pups, virgins exposed to pups, and virgins never exposed to pups--in 2 environments designed to elicit anxiety response: an open field with a novel object placed in the center and a closed cage containing a sample of a component of fox feces. Behavioral responses were measured by using traditional methods (duration and frequency) and behavioral-chain sequences. Results indicated that paternal experience significantly modifies a male mouse's behavioral and physiologic responses to stress-provoking stimuli. Compared with inexperienced male mice, experienced male mice had a significant decrease in the occurrence of incomplete behavioral chains during the exposure to the novel object, an index of reduced stress. Further, even moderate pup exposure induced behavioral modifications in virgin male mice. These behavioral responses were correlated with changes in corticosterone and DHEA levels. Together, these data provide evidence that interactions between male mice and offspring may have mutually beneficial long-term behavioral and physiologic effects.  相似文献

This experiment investigated the time-course of behavioral and physical development in 18 male and 18 female pups from 18 litters of California mice. From 1 to 23 days of age animals were observed for a 6-min observation period every other day, followed by a neurobehavioral testing session. Ultrasonic vocalizations (UVs), coordinated movements, neuromotor indicators and physical parameters were measured. The production of UVs peaked during the first week of development, remained stable from 9 to 15 days of age, and decreased abruptly thereafter. Females vocalized more than males during the first 9 days after birth, although this difference only was statistically significant on the third day. There was an inverse relationship between the emission of UVs and coordinated movements. The frequency of UVs dropped significantly 1 day after the pups had displayed surface righting, were able to hear, and had begun opening their eyes compared with 1 day before. In conclusion, it appears that there is a sex difference in the emission of UVs, which is more intense at the beginning of development. Furthermore, the ontogenetic patterns of changes in the emission of UVs, by both males and females in California mice, are inversely related to the development of coordinated movements, such as rearing, locomotion and self-grooming.  相似文献

Although the bones of rapidly growing animals are composed of weak tissue, they often must function in locomotor activity. We address the conflict between development and skeletal function by analysing the ontogeny of skeletal strength in the California gull, Larus californicus. Changes in shape and mechanical properties of the femur, tibia, tarsometatarsus, humerus, ulna and carpometacarpus were analysed in a complete post-hatching growth series. During post-hatching growth, strength and stiffness of the skeletal tissue increases six- to ten-fold. At hatching, long bones of the wing are relatively weak and they remain so throughout the major portion of the growth period. However, in the hind limb, relatively thick bones in juveniles compensate for the weak tissue such that the force required to break the bones remains constant relative to body mass. This difference between hind limb and wing parallels the development of locomotor function; young gulls begin to walk within a day or two of hatching, but they do not fly until they are fully grown. Thus, in the bones of the hind limb, the conflict between rapid growth and skeletal function is solved by negative allometry of bone thickness.
After young gulls reach adult size, the breaking strength of the wing bones increases three- to four-fold, the mass of the pectoralis muscle triples and the surface area of the wing doubles. The one aspect of wing development that is not delayed until shortly before fledging is linear growth of the bones. Bones of the wing increase in length at a rapid and relatively constant rate from the time of hatching to the attainment of adult size. Relatively early initiation of linear growth of the wing bones suggests that the rate at which bones grow in length may be the rate limiting factor in wing development.  相似文献

Eighty California quail (Callipepla californica), collected from the E. E. Wilson Wildlife Area near Monmouth, Oregon (USA) during a 22 mo period, were examined for gastrointestinal helminths. Eight birds were infected with three species of nematodes, Heterakis isolonche, Dispharynx nasuta, and Capillaria sp., and two species of cestodes, Rhabdometra odiosa and Davainea sp. Except for D. nasuta, prevalence did not exceed 5% despite mesic conditions in the collection area. Two mountain quail (Oreortyx pictus) were collected from Lane County, Oregon (USA), near Blue River Reservoir; both were infected with the nematode Trichostrongylus tenuis.  相似文献

In many biparental species, mothers and fathers experience similar modifications to circulating hormones. With these modifications come alterations in neural structure and function suggesting that neuroendocrine mechanisms may underlie postpartum plasticity in both males and females. In the biparental California mouse (Peromyscus californicus), adult neurogenesis is maintained and anxiety-like behavior is attenuated in fathers during the mid-postpartum period. Given a causal relationship between estrogen and regulation of both adult neurogenesis and anxiety, we aimed to elucidate the role of estrogen-dependent mechanisms in paternal experience-related modifications to hippocampal neuroplasticity in California mice. In Experiment 1, hippocampal estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) mRNA expression, along with circulating estradiol concentrations, were determined throughout the postpartum period. An upregulation in ERβ expression was observed in postnatal day 16 males compared to virgins. Additionally, a rise in circulating estradiol concentrations was detected on postnatal day 2 compared to virgins; levels began to decline toward virgin levels on postnatal day 16 and postnatal day 30. In Experiment 2, we determined the role of estrogen-dependent mechanisms in adult neurogenesis and anxiety-like behavior by treating virgin and paternal males with saline or the selective estrogen receptor modulator, tamoxifen (TMX), during the time of axon extension (i.e., one week after bromodeoxyuridine injection). While TMX failed to alter elevated plus maze performance, TMX treatment inhibited survival of adult born neurons but only in paternal mice. These findings highlight the potential for estrogen-dependent pathways to mediate hippocampal adult neurogenesis in paternal mice.  相似文献

The egg yolk precursor protein, vitellogenin (Vg), was isolated by size exclusion and ion exchange chromatography from plasma of California halibut (Paralichthys californicus) treated with estrogen. MALDI TOF mass spectrometry (MS) analysis resulted in a molecular mass of 188 kDa. MS/MS de novo sequencing identified the protein as Vg by matching sequences of tryptic peptides to the known sequences of several other species. Matches were also made to two different forms of Vg in haddock, medaka, and mummichog, providing evidence that California halibut has more than one form of Vg. Native PAGE and Western blot with an antibody to turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) Vg confirmed the identity of the protein. Protein resolved on the SDS PAGE as a double band of approximately the same mass as determined with MALDI TOF, and two lower mass bands that were also immunoreactive. MALDI TOF and MS/MS de novo sequencing were useful for determining the molecular mass, identification, and exploring the multiplicity of Vg. The potential of using other MS methods to understand the structure and function of Vg is discussed.  相似文献

We examined the prevalence, quantity, and diversity of Campylobacter species in the excreta of 159 California gull (Larus californicus) samples using culture-, PCR-, and quantitative PCR (qPCR)-based detection assays. Campylobacter prevalence and abundance were relatively high in the gull excreta examined; however, C. jejuni and C. lari were detected in fewer than 2% of the isolates and DNA extracts from the fecal samples that tested positive. Moreover, molecular and sequencing data indicated that most L. californicus campylobacters were novel (<97% 16S rRNA gene sequence identity to known Campylobacter species) and not closely related to species commonly associated with human illness. Campylobacter estimates were positively related with those of fecal indicators, including a gull fecal marker based on the Catellicoccus marimammalium 16S rRNA gene.  相似文献

Seventy-six California quail (Callipepla californica) were collected during a 22-mo period from the E. E. Wilson Wildlife Area near Monmouth, Oregon. Dispharynx nasuta occurred in 38% of the birds with a mean intensity of 4.9 +/- 5.1. In one of 2 yr, host age was significantly associated with prevalence, with immature males showing the highest prevalence (73%). Although C. californica has been the subject of several parasitological surveys, this is the first record of D. nasuta in this host.  相似文献

To examine how developmental experiences alter neural pathways associated with adult social behavior, we cross-fostered pups between the more aggressive and monogamous California mouse (Peromyscus californicus) and the less aggressive and polygamous white-footed mouse (P. leucopus). Cross-fostered males became more like their foster parents when tested as adults. Male white-footed mice became more aggressive only in an aggression test in a neutral arena, whereas the territorial California mice became less aggressive in resident-intruder aggression test, as measured by attack latency. Only the species that displayed a change in resident-intruder aggression showed a change in arginine vasopressin (AVP) levels: cross-fostered California mice had significantly lower levels of AVP-immunoreactive (AVP-ir) staining than controls in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) and the supraoptic nucleus (SON) and a nonsignificant trend toward lower levels in the medial amygdala (MA). Neither species showed changes in AVP-ir staining in a control area, the paraventricular nucleus (PVN). The changes in AVP-ir staining in the BNST and SON may not be caused by stress because cross-fostering was not associated with changes in adult plasma concentrations of two steroid hormones, corticosterone and testosterone, that have been associated with stress-related alterations in AVP pathways. These results suggest that manipulating the early parental environment can directly alter both a neurotransmitter system and species-typical patterns of social behavior, but that these effects may vary between species and under different social contexts.  相似文献

Geyer [Am. Zool. 21 (1981) 117] hypothesized that infant rodents increased the number of ultrasonic vocalizations when they moved in and out of the nest in order to elicit extended care from parents. We tested these hypotheses by recording ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) and coordinated movements (locomotion and grooming) in California mouse and by recording USVs from pups before and after their parents retrieved them. In Experiment 1, USVs and coordinated movements were recorded from 2 to 30 days of age, in female and male Peromyscus californicus pups. USVs at 37, 42, 47, and 52kHz were digitized and recorded by computer and an event recorder program which was simultaneously used to record coordinated movement. Vocalizations persisted to 30 days of age. Vocalizations increased for both males and females after they spent more than 180s in coordinated movement and females vocalized more than males. Females also displayed more coordinated movement and earlier development of coordinated movement than males. There was no effect of litter size on USVs. In Experiment 2, the number of USVs emitted by pups and the latency of dams and sires to contact their pups and retrieve them was measured. There was no significant correlation between the number of USVs emitted by pups and the latency for a parent to contact or retrieve a pup. Results from Experiment 1 provided some support for Geyer's (1981) hypothesis and results from Experiment 2 did not support the hypothesis that the main function of USVs in California mouse pups was to elicit parental care.  相似文献

Glucocorticoids are thought to mediate the disruption of parental behavior in response to acute and chronic stress. Previous research supports their role in chronic stress; however, no study has experimentally tested the effects of acute glucocorticoid elevation on paternal behavior. We tested the prediction that acute corticosterone (CORT) increases would decrease paternal behavior in California mouse fathers and would lead to longer-term effects on reproductive success, as even short-term increases in CORT have been shown to produce lasting effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. First-time fathers were injected with 30 mg/kg CORT, 60 mg/kg CORT or vehicle, or left unmanipulated. Interactions between the male and its pup(s) were recorded 1.5–2 h after injection and scored for paternal and non-paternal behavior. Treatment groups were combined into control (unmanipulated + vehicle, n = 15) and CORT (30 mg/kg + 60 mg/kg, n = 16) for analysis based on resulting plasma CORT concentrations. CORT treatment did not alter paternal or non-paternal behaviors or any long-term measures (male body mass or temperature, pup growth rate, pup survival, interbirth interval, number or mass of pups born in the second litter). Fathers showed a significant rise in body mass at day 30 postpartum, followed by a decrease in body mass after the birth of the second litter; however, this pattern did not differ between the CORT and control groups. In summary, acute elevation of plasma CORT did not alter direct paternal behavior, body mass, or reproductive outcomes, suggesting that acute CORT elevation alone does not overtly disrupt paternal care in this biparental mammal.  相似文献

Summary Some of the components of the system that controls the function of the testes of the Japanese quail were identified by means of midline or bilateral electrolytic or radio-frequency coagulation of various regions of the hypothalamus. The destruction of two identifiable regions of the ventral hypothalamus resulted in different forms of testicular dysfunction. Extensive medial or bilateral damage to the infundibular nuclear complex, ventral regions thereof (including the tuberal nuclei), the entire median eminence or its posterior division resulted in regression of both the gametogenic and endocrine components of the testis and regression of the cloacal gland, an anal gland known to depend on testosterone for normal function. Damage to more anterodorsal regions of the infundibular nuclear complex resulted, in a single bird, in regression of the seminiferous tubules, but had no noticeable effect on the cells of Leydig; the cloacal gland of this bird, although reduced somewhat in size, appeared histologically active. Unilateral damage to the infundibular nuclear complex or the median eminence, or bilateral destruction of the antero—or posteroventral portions of the infundibular nuclear complex did not affect testicular function. The differing testicular dysfunctions are discussed in relation to the release of LH and FSH from the adenohypophysis. This investigation was supported by NIH Predoctoral Fellowship GM-33,458 to the author, and by Research Grants from the National Science Foundation (GB-11905) and the National Institutes of Health (NB-06187) to Professor Donald S. Zones of contact between divergent biological forms within or between species are critical to the study of speciation. How characters flow across contact zones can be informative of the speciation process. To better understand this phenomenon in a mammal, we investigated cranial shape change in a contact zone between northern and southern phylogeographical groups of California voles (Microtus californicus). We took 12 linear measurements of skulls, one measurement of the mandible, and coded the presence and absence of two skull foramina for 427 specimens. In multivariate analyses, skulls within parental regions were correctly assigned more than 90% of the time. In the contact zone, 49% were classified as northern and 51% as southern, with a bimodal distribution of posterior probability values. Foraminal patterns in the contact zone were intermediate between northern and southern regions. A cline analysis for coastal populations suggested a similar centre for mitochondrial and nuclear markers, although a centre for the morphological data was offset. Cranial morphology indicates an intermediate area with overlap between the two regions, as suggested by the molecular data, with a pattern distinct from mitochondrial DNA or nuclear DNA markers. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 104 , 264–283.  相似文献
