The histochemistry of glycoconjugates in the nasolabial skin of the goat has been studied by means of a series of selected methods of light microscopy. The epidermis of the nasolabial skin was found to contain neutral and acid glycoconjugates with different saccharide residues. The secretory epithelial cells and secretory substances of the sebaceous glands contained primarily neutral glycoconjugates, whereas those of the apocrine glands involved largely strongly acidic and neutral glycoconjugates. In the epithelial cells and secretory substances of the nasolabial eccrine glands, glycoconjugates involved were characteristically strongly neutral but weakly acidic in nature. From the present results, the histophysiological significance of glycoconjugates in the particular histologic structures of the nasolabial skin has been discussed with special reference to the functions of this particular skin type in the goat.  相似文献

The histochemistry of carbohydrates has been studied in the skin of the pig snout with selected methods of light microscopy including peroxidase-labelled lectin-diaminobenzidine (PO-LT-DAB) procedures. In the snout skin the dark secretory cells and the luminal secretion of the eccrine glands contained considerable amounts of neutral glycoproteins, but only a very small amount of acidic ones. It was possible to demonstrate glycogen in the secretory cells of these glands. The other skin structures of the snout also showed positive reactions for complex carbohydrates. Most remarkable were stronger reactions of intercellular substances among the spinosum cells, particularly following the PO-LT-DAB procedures, which demonstrated such saccharide residues as beta-D-galactose and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine.  相似文献

We investigated inter‐ and intraspecific variation in epidermal gland characteristics in cordylid lizards. Our particular interest was whether a causal relationship exists between the presence of generation glands and lifestyle, i.e. in rock‐dwelling or ground‐dwelling lizards. We established that both femoral and generation glands are always present in adult males, but that species can be divided into three categories on the basis of the presence of these glands in adult females: both femoral and generation glands absent; femoral glands present, but generation glands absent; and both femoral and generation glands present. The absence of epidermal glands in females appears to be the basal condition in the Cordylidae. All cordylid species are sexually dimorphic as far as generation gland number is concerned, with females having consistently less glands than males. Gland number in females is strongly affected by climate, being lower in cooler compared with warmer environments. In males, there is no clear geographical pattern, although in some clades males of high‐altitude species have more generation glands than males of species occurring at lower altitudes. At least four of the five ground‐dwelling species in the family display unique generation gland characteristics, compared with rock‐dwelling species, reflecting the continued importance of generation glands in terrestrial environments. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 158 , 312–324.  相似文献

The cranial glands of ten species of turtles were studied by the use of histochemistry applied to serial sections of whole heads. The majority were stenohaline species, but one brackish water form, Malaclemys, was included. The results show that all species have two major orbital glands, an anterior Harderian gland, and a posterior lachrymal gland. The latter is seromucous in all species except Malaclemys terrapin in which the gland shows little evidence or organic secretion. External and medial nasal glands are found in all species studied, and also are seromucous glands. With these reslts, combined with a review of the literature the following conclusions are made. The Harderian gland is by definition the orbital gland opening through the medial surface of the nictitating membrane at or near the anterior canthus. It is of constant occurrence, and histological appearance, probably serving the same function. However, despite much recent study this function remains unknown. The lachrymal gland is defined as the orbital gland which opens through the lateral surface of the nictitating membrane, or medial surface of the lower eyelid, at or near the posterior canthus. It is of variable occurrence, absent in many reptiles, and has a histological structure which is also variable. In the stenohaline species it is apparently involved in organic secretion, while in the brackish water Malaclemys it may be involved in salt secretion, as it is in Cheloniidae. The nasal glands in turtles are probably homologous with the nasal salt glands of lizards and birds, but they do not appear to subserve the same function. In all species of turtles studied the nasal glands are seromucous. They are perhaps involved in the maintenance of the epithelium of the olfactory cavity.  相似文献

The distribution of glycoconjugates in the muzzle of young adult Holstein cows has been studied by means of selected light-microscopic histochemical methods, including lectin histochemistry. In the skin layers, strong reactions were confined to intercellular substances in between the cells of the vital epidermis, exhibiting neutral glycoconjugates mainly with alpha-D-galactosyl and N-acetyl-D-galactosaminyl residues. In the nasolabial glands, distinctly positive staining for neutral glycoproteins with various saccharide residues (alpha-D-galactose, alpha-N-acetylgalactosamine, D-galactose-beta(1----3)D-N-acetylgalactosamine, beta-D-galactose), and for smaller amounts of acidic glycoconjugates, was found in the secretory cells and the luminal secretion. The cells of the excretory duct system showed weak to moderate reactions (alpha-D-galactose, beta-D-galactose), only the collecting ducts reacted positively for acidic glycoproteins with sialyl residues. The results obtained are discussed in view of muzzle function, with special reference to the salivary nature of the secretion of bovine nasolabial glands.  相似文献

Summary The disintegration of spermatozoa in the infundibular sperm-host glands of the fowl was investigated by electron microscopy. After the 15th day following artificial insemination, secretory granules in the epithelial cells of the sperm-host glands increase in number and size, and subsequently the contents of the granules are released into the glandular lumen, so that the electron density of the lumen increases. At this stage, spermatozoa stored in the glands begin to undergo degenerative changes starting from the head. The heads become distended and chromatin of the nucleus begins to disperse as small masses, simultaneously with the destruction of the acrosome. As the dispersion of chromatin progresses, mitochondria of the middle piece become distended and irregular in shape, and then disintegrate. At the last stage, most of the organelles have disappeared, but the fibrous sheath and axial-filament complex are still identified.The authors are greatly indebted to Assoc. Summary The ultimobranchial glands of the chicken were examined by electron microscopy and immunocytochemistry using a calcitonin antiserum. Electron microscopy confirmed the presence of C-cells, containing numerous secretory granules storing calcitonin, in the luminal lining of cyst-like structures found in these glands. These cells were furnished with prominent microvillar projections at their luminal surface, and the cytoplasm of the apical region was filled with fibril material. Furthermore, the cells contained prominent junctional complexes and desmosomes at their apico-lateral surfaces. In these C-cells, secretory granules were concentrated near the lumen and some were attached to the apical cell membrane. The luminal content of the cysts had a colloid-like and flocculent appearance, and was frequently seen attached to the cytoplasmic projections or apical cell membrane of the C-cells. Since the cysts progressively increase in volume and number with age, it is suggested that they may partly play a role in the storage of excess or unneeded hormonal products.  相似文献

Histogenesis of the post-ovulatory follicles in relation to the regression process has been studied in the Indian domestic duck. The activities of the alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, sudan black-B and periodic acid Schiff reaction have been demonstrated histochemically. No lutein cells comparable to the mammalian corpus luteum are found. The hypertrophy or proliferation of granulosa cells are not observed in this bird. The functional significance of different histochemically demonstrable material and steroidogenesis in the avian post-ovulatory follicles have been briefly discussed.  相似文献

The duodenal glands of cat and horse were studied using PAS, Alcian blue, dialysed iron, aldehyde fuchsin-Alcian blue and high iron diamine stains. It was found that the duodenal glands of the horse reacted positively to Alcian blue, dialysed iron stains and also took the Alcian blue stain in the combined aldehyde fuchsin-Alcian blue and high iron diamine-Alcian blue stains. Those of the cat gave negative results. These results suggest the presence of acidic groups in the mucosubstances secreted by the horse's duodenal glands. A suggestion is put forward on the strength of the high iron diamine-Alcian blue combined stains that the acidity is due to the presence of carboxyl groups. It is suggested that the acidity may be significant in either cellulose metabolism or the digestion of the bacterial microflora from the stomach of herbivores.  相似文献

Summary The albumen gland, the muciparous gland and the oöthecal gland of female genital tract of Lymnaea stagnalis, collected in spring, autumn and winter have been studied.The reactions for polysaccharides, proteins and RNA have been performed in order to characterise the secretion of the glands.The albumen gland secretion consists almost exclusively of slightly acid polysaccharides whose histochemical reactions, according to Lison and Grainger and Shillitoe confirm the presence of galactogen. Proteins are also present in the secretion. The muciparous gland secretion consists of strongly acid mucopolysaccharides (non sulphated) produced by large cells among which small cells containing sulphated mucopolysaccharides are present.In the oöthecal gland two zones are present, one with a single type of cells containing acid mucopolysaccharides, and the other with two different types of cells: the first with mucopolysaccharides and the second with sulphated mucopolysaccharides, proteins and glycogen at the basis of the cell. Sialic acids are not present in the secretion of the glands studied.The polysaccharidic composition of the secretion of the glands is different from gland to gland. The secretion of the glands gradually changes and gets acid according to the composition of the various membranes and envelopes wrapping up the eggs.  相似文献
