Root hairs are tubular outgrowths specifically differentiated from epidermal cells in a differentiation zone. The formation of root hairs greatly increases the surface area of a root and maximizes its ability to absorb water and inorganic nutrients essential for plant growth and development. Root hair development is strictly regulated by intracellular and intercellular signal communications. Cell surface-localized receptor-like protein kinases(RLKs) have been shown to be important components in these cellular processes. In this review, the functions of a number of key RLKs in regulating Arabidopsis root hair development are discussed, especially those involved in root epidermal cell fate determination and root hair tip growth.  相似文献

Alkamides and N-acilethanolamides are a class of lipid compounds related to animal endocannabinoids of wide distribution in plants. We investigated the structural features required for alkamides to regulate plant development by comparing the root responses of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) seedlings to a range of natural and synthetic compounds. The length of the acyl chain and the amide moiety were found to play a crucial role in their biological activity. From the different compounds tested, N-isobutyl decanamide, a small saturated alkamide, was found to be the most active in regulating primary root growth and lateral root formation. Proliferative-promoting activity of alkamide treatment was evidenced by formation of callus-like structures in primary roots, ectopic blades along petioles of rosette leaves, and disorganized tumorous tissue originating from the leaf lamina. Ectopic organ formation by N-isobutyl decanamide treatment was related to altered expression of the cell division marker CycB1:uidA and an enhanced expression of the cytokinin-inducible marker ARR5:uidA both in roots and in shoots. The involvement of cytokinins in mediating the observed activity of alkamides was tested using Arabidopsis mutants lacking one, two, or three of the putative cytokinin receptors CRE1, AHK2, and AHK3. The triple cytokinin receptor mutant was insensitive to N-isobutyl decanamide treatment, showing absence of callus-like structures in roots, the lack of lateral root proliferation, and absence of ectopic outgrowths in leaves under elevated levels of this alkamide. Taken together our results suggest that alkamides and N-acylethanolamides may belong to a class of endogenous signaling compounds that interact with a cytokinin-signaling pathway to control meristematic activity and differentiation processes during plant development.  相似文献

Plants are exposed to numerous potential pathogenic microbes. To counter the threat, plants have evolved diverse patternrecognition receptors(PRRs), which are receptor kinases(RKs) and receptor proteins(RPs) specialized to detect conserved pathogen/microbe-associated molecular patterns(PAMPs/MAMPs). Although only a handful of RKs and RPs are known PRRs,they belong to the receptor-like kinase(RLK) and receptor-like protein(RLP) superfamilies that undergo lineage-specific expansion, suggesting that many of these RLKs and RLPs are potential PRRs. Analyses of existing PRRs have uncovered ligand-induced RLK-RK or RLK-RP oligomerization as a common mechanism for immune activation. PRRs can recruit additional components to form dynamic receptor complexes, which mediate specific cellular responses. Detailed analyses of these components are shedding light on molecular mechanisms underlying the regulation of PRR activity and downstream signaling.  相似文献

A deep thick root system has been demonstrated to have a positive effect on yield of upland rice under water stress conditions. Molecular-marker-aided selection could be helpful for the improvement of root morphological traits, which are otherwise difficult to score. We studied a doubled-haploid population of 105 lines derived from an indica×japonica cross and mapped the genes controlling root morphology and distribution (root thickness, maximum root length, total root weight, deep root weight, deep root weight per tiller, and deep root to shoot ratio). Most putative QTL activity was concentrated in fairly compact regions on chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8 and 9, but was widely spread on chromosome 5 and largely absent on chromosomes 4, 10, 11 and 12. Between three and six QTLs were identified on different chromosomes for each trait. Individual QTLs accounted for between 4 and 22% of the variation in the traits. Multiple QTL models accounted for between 14 and 49%. The main QTLs were common between traits, showing that it should be possible to modify several aspects of root morphology simultaneously. There was evidence of interaction between marker locations in determining QTL expression. Interacting locations were mostly on different chromosomes and showed antagonistic effects with magnitudes large enough to mask QTL detection. The comparison of QTL locations with another population showed that one to three common QTLs per trait were recovered, among which the most significant was in one or other population. These results will allow the derivation of isogenic lines introgressed with these common segments, separately in the indica and japonica backgrounds. Human natural killer (NK) cells possess an arsenal of receptors programmed to regulate the NK cell functions, once encountering a target cell. In general, the activating receptors mediate cytotoxicity when engaged by their tumor specific, stress induced, virally encoded, or rarely, self ligands. Whereas, the inhibitory receptors bind self molecules, mostly MHC class I, presented on all normal and healthy nucleated cells. However, NK cells also possess numerous, highly homologous, pairs of receptors that sometimes even share the same ligands but display divergent functions. In this review we describe the NK cell repertoire of paired receptors and discuss questions regarding their function and mode of action. We focus primarily on the three PVR-binding receptors; the co-stimulatory DNAM1 and CD96 and the inhibitory TIGIT.  相似文献

During development cells transit through different states as they pass from stem cell to terminally differentiated cell. There is evidence that the transition from one state to another can be accompanied by changes in epigenetic state of genes, which is embodied in chromatin state. Here we give an overview of the changes in chromatin that accompany the regulation of expression and review the evidence for the involvement of such changes during epidermal root development and discuss the roles that these changes play in the differentiation of the cell types involved.  相似文献

The hydroxyproline-rich root nodules of legumes provide a microaerobic niche for symbiotic nitrogen-fixing Rhizobacteria. The contributions of the cell wall and associated structural proteins, particularly the hydroxyproline-rich glycoproteins (HRGPs), are therefore of interest. Our approach involved identification of the protein components by direct chemical analysis of the insoluble wall. Chymotryptic peptide mapping showed a "P3-type" extensin containing the highly arabinosylated Ser-Hyp4-Ser-Hyp-Ser-Hyp4-Tyr3-Lys motif as a major component. Cell wall amino acid analyses and quantitative hydroxyproline arabinoside profiles, predominantly of tri- and tetraarabinosides, confirmed this extensin as the major structural protein in the cell walls of both root nodules and uninfected roots. On the other hand, judging from the Pro, Glu and non-glycosylated Hyp content, the nodule-specific proline-rich glycoproteins, such as the early nodulins (ENOD-PRPs), are present in much lesser amounts. Although we isolated no PRP peptides from nodule cell walls, a single PRP peptide from root cell walls confirmed the presence of a PRP in roots and represented the first direct evidence for a crosslinked PRP in muro. Compared with root cell walls (approximately 7% protein dry weight) nodule cell walls contained significantly more protein (approximately 13% dry weight) with an overall amino acid and peptide composition indicating the presence of structural protein unrelated to the HRGPs.  相似文献

Drosophila steroid receptors and related receptor-like proteins show remarkable conservation of structure and function relative to vertebrate homologues. While those proteins are involved in numerous embryonic and post-embryonic developmental processes, a striking number of receptor-like proteins are clustered in regulatory hierarchies under the control of the insect molting hormone ecdysone. This has suggested a number of models based on competitive, cooperative and inter-regulatory interactions between these proteins.  相似文献

Vertebrate digits are essential structures for movement, feeding and communication.Specialized regions of the developing limb bud including the zone of polarizing activity(ZPA),the apical ectodermal ridge(AER),and the non-ridge ectoderm regulate the patterning of digits.Although a series of signaling molecules have been characterized as patterning signals from the organizing centers, the delicate cellular and molecular mechanisms that interpret how these patterning signals control the detailed digit anatomy remain unclear.Recent studies from model organisms and human hand malformations provide new insights into the mechanisms regulating this process. Here,we review the current understanding of the genetic networks governing digit morphogenesis.  相似文献

A better understanding of the development and architecture of roots is essential to develop strategies to increase crop yield and optimize agricultural land use. Roots control nutrient and water uptake, provide anchoring and mechanical support and can serve as important storage organs. Root growth and development is under tight genetic control and modulated by developmental cues including plant hormones and the environment. This review focuses on root architecture and its diversity and the role of environment, nutrient, and water as well as plant hormones and their interactions in shaping root architecture.  相似文献

The root provides a useful system for the analysis of plant organ formation. Mutations that affect root development and physiology have been identified in Arabidopsis thaliana. Affected processes include embryonic root formation, cell expansion, cell differentiation and response to environmental stimuli. Analysis of these mutations is providing insight into fundamental questions of plant development.  相似文献

QTL controlling root and shoot traits of maize seedlings under cold stress   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The improvement of early vigour is crucial for the adaptation of maize (Zea mays L.) to the climatic conditions of central Europe and the northern Mediterranean, where early sowing is an important strategy for avoiding the effect of summer drought. The objectives of this study were to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling cold-related traits and to investigate the relationships among them. A set of 168 F2:4 families of the Lo964 × Lo1016 cross was grown in a sand–vermiculite substrate at 15/13°C (day/night) until the one-leaf stage. Twenty QTL were identified for the four shoot and two seed traits examined. Analysis of root weight and digital measurements of the length and diameter of primary and seminal roots led to the identification of 40 QTL. The operating efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) was related to seedling dry weight at both the phenotypic and genetic level (r=0.46, two matching loci, respectively) but was not related to root traits. Cluster analysis and QTL association revealed that the different root traits were largely independently inherited and that root lengths and diameters were mostly negatively correlated. The major QTL for root traits detected in an earlier study in hydroponics were confirmed in this study. The length of the primary lateral roots was negatively associated with the germination index (r=–0.38, two matching loci). Therefore, we found a large number of independently inherited loci suitable for the improvement of early seedling growth through better seed vigour and/or a higher rate of photosynthesis. This paper is dedicated to our friend and colleague Alberto Soldati, who passed away unexpectedly.  相似文献

From the onset of melanocyte specification from the neural crest, throughout their migration during embryogenesis and until they reside in their niche in the basal keratinocyte layer, melanocytes interact in dynamic ways with the extracellular environment of the growing embryo. To recognize and to adhere to their environment, melanocytes depend on heterodimeric cell surface receptors of the family of integrins. In addition to the control of adhesive interactions between melanocytes and the extracellular matrix scaffold secreted by fibroblasts and keratinocytes, the integrin receptors allow cells also to sense the mechanical condition of the extracellular environment, responding by intracellular signaling, triggering cell survival, proliferation or migration events. In this review, we summarize the recently emerged concepts that explain integrin-dependent adhesion and how this adhesion system interfaces with integrin-dependent signaling events. The gained information will help to understand melanocyte behavior in pathological situations such as melanoma growth and metastasis formation.  相似文献
