Organically bound phosphorus (P) is a mobile form of phosphorus in many soils and thus its dynamics relevant for the leaching and cycling of this element. Despite its importance, little is known about the chemical composition of dissolved organic P. We studied the concentrations, fluxes, and chemical composition of organic P in forest floor leachates and soil solutions in a Rendzic Leptosol under a 90-year-old European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) forest over a 27-month period (1997–1999). The chemical composition of organic P was analysed using XAD-8 fractionation and 31P-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Organic P was the dominant P form in forest floor leachates as well as in porewaters of the mineral soil. The largest concentrations of organic P were observed during summer and peaked (330–400 g dissolved organic P l–1) after rain storms following short dry periods, concurrently with the concentrations of organic carbon (OC). Because of high rainfall, fluxes of organic P (and C) were greatest in autumn although concentrations of organic C and P were lower than in summer. In forest floor leachates, the hydrophilic fraction of dissolved organic matter contained 83 ± 13% of the bulk organic P. In soil solutions from 90 cm depth, organic P was almost exclusively in the hydrophilic fraction. Because of the low retention of the hydrophilic fraction of dissolved organic matter in the mineral soils, concentrations of organic P in soil water remained almost constant with depth. Consequently, organic P contributed > 95% of the total P leached into deeper subsoils. The overall retention of organic P in the weakly developed mineral soils was little and so the average annual fluxes of organic P in subsoils at 90 cm depth (38 mg m–2) comprised 67% of those from the forest floors (57 mg m–2) during the study period. Hence, organic P proved to be mobile in the studied soil. 31P-NMR spectroscopy confirmed the dominance of organic P species in soil water. Signals due to inorganic P occurred only in spectra of samples collected in winter and spring months. Spectra of samples from summer and autumn revealed traces of condensed phosphates. Due to low P contents, identification of organic P species in samples from winter and spring was not always possible. In summer and autumn, monoester and diester phosphates were the dominant organic species and varied little in their relative distributions. The distribution of organic species changed little from forest floor leachates to the subsoil solutions indicating that the composition of P-containing compounds was not influenced by sorptive interactions or biological transformation.  相似文献

Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands cover large areas in the Lusatian and the Middle German lignite mining districts. Due to adverse chemical substrate conditions, the root systems of the trees are restricted to the ameliorated top-spoil and the organic forest floor layers. To investigate functioning of fine root systems under the prevailing site factors, we studied mycorrhizal colonization rate and frequency as well as mycorrhizal diversity, vitality and growth phases in Scots pine ecosystems along a chronosequence in both mining districts. Mycorrhizal rate was close to 100% in both districts. Mycorrhizal abundance was higher in the organic forest floor layer than the mineral soil layer. In total, 25 morphotypes were recorded. Diversity differed between the districts. The mycorrhizae of Amphinema byssoides, Tuber puberulum, Pinirhiza discolor, Pinirhiza cf. bicolorata and E-type were present in both mining areas. These morphotypes are typical of nutrient-rich soils with high pH values. Compared with the undisturbed sites, vitality of mycorrhizae was very high at the test sites on spoil substrate, correlating with the high growth dynamics of mycorrhizae at recultivation sites. A relatively high carbon flow to the mycorrhizal root systems at these sites seems likely. Thus, mycorrhizal root systems are able to cope with the ameliorated top-spoil and the organic layer. The main reason for the adaptation is the large number of ectomycorrhizal fungal species available in this area where Pinus sylvestris is indigenous.  相似文献

Mangrove partitioning and storage of macronutrients and trace metals were examined in different arid coastal settings of Western Australia. Total living biomass in three Rhizophora stylosa forests, which ranged from 233 to 289 t DW ha-1, was significantly greater than biomass in three Avicennia marina forests (range: 79-155 t DW ha-1). Although prop roots and stems were the largest single tree components for R. stylosa and A. marina, respectively, most nutrients were stored in leaves and living roots of both species. However, only a small fraction of the total nutrient pool was vested in tree biomass; the vast bulk was in soils. A large below-ground pool of dead fine roots was identified at all stands, equivalent to 36-88% DW of total living tree biomass. The amount of Ca, S, Cl, Na, Si, Fe, Mn, Zn, B, Mo and Cu vested in dead roots of both species was greater than in the total living tree biomass. The proportion of Fe and S vested in live and dead roots was exceptionally large, consistent with previous evidence of metal plaques on mangrove roots. Sulphur, iron and zinc in dead roots of both species constituted the bulk of these metals. R. stylosa trees preferentially accumulated more Mg, S, Cl, Na, Si, Fe, Mn, B and Mo than A. marina trees. Proportionally greater storage of P, N, Ca, K, Cu and Zn occurred in two of the three A. marina forests. Foliar concentrations of Mg, S, Mn, B and Mo in mangrove leaves were at the high end of the range reported for other tropical trees, but other elemental concentrations were at the low or mid-range. Nitrogen limitation in these forests is implied by a positive correlation between total tree N and net canopy production and by a lower percentage of ecosystem N in tree biomass as compared with other forests. Unlike terrestrial forests where a large proportion of nutrient capital is vested in floor litter, most elements in these mangrove forests are stored in dead roots. A large reservoir of dead roots below the forest floor may serve as a conservation mechanism, particularly in such arid oligotrophic environments.  相似文献

A non-invasive genetic approach has been recently employed in the population genetics of wild species, using faeces that could be easily collected, particularly of elusive or endangered species. However, faeces of pine (Martes martes) and beech marten (M. foina) can be morphologically similar and could be confused with those of polecat (Mustela putorius) and red fox (Vulpes vulpes). On this basis, a rapid, simple and inexpensive RFLP protocol using a cytochrome b (Cyt b) gene fragment of mtDNA, isolated from faecal samples, was performed to distinguish the above-mentioned species.  相似文献

Changes to the primary successional environment caused by colonizing plants that present symbiotic associations with nitrogen-fixing bacteria were investigated at two areas on Mount St. Helens. One area was occupied by alder (Alnus viridis) thickets and old lupine (Lupinus lepidus) patches and the other area by young lupine patches and pumice barrens. Alder thicket soils had higher levels for a few soil nutrients and had greater cover by other pioneer species as compared to old lupine patches. Many soil nutrients, including nitrogen and soil organic matter, were below detection limits in old lupine patches but not in alder thicket soils. Young lupine patch soils were generally not different from barren site soils but had greater cover by other pioneer species. Below detection nitrogen and soil organic matter levels also occurred in many barren soil samples but not in young lupine patch soils. Barren soils were moister than were the other sites. The apparent increase in soil fertility has not led to invasion by later successional species, perhaps due to dry conditions or to other inhibitory factors. Seedbanks, composed of early successional species, appear to be developing in these areas.  相似文献

Dry semideciduous and deciduous forests occur only on calcium-rich soils and occupy almost 20% of the 200 million ha of the cerrado region of central Brazil. Other savanna physiognomies of woodlands and grasslands, and gallery forests generally occur on acid soils with low calcium levels. The literature on phytosociological aspects of such cerrado physiognomies is quite abundant whereas there is very little information on deciduous forests. Also lacking is information on soil fertility and its influence on species distribution. The objective of the present study was to study the distribution of native species within a dry deciduous forest in the Araguari river valley, Uberlândia, Minas Gerais as related to soil properties. A 1-ha sampling area, with no apparent difference in physiognomy, was divided into fifty 10 m × 20 m plots arrayed in 10 × 5 grid and all trees with a minimum circumference of 15 cm at 1.30 m height were surveyed. A composite soil sample was collected from 0 to 10 cm depth in each plot and soil pH, organic C and nutrient availability were determined. Cluster analysis based on soil chemical properties showed the existence of two distinct groups of plots. Further field examinations revealed that the forest was situated in an area of transition between mica schist and basalt parent materials, without any apparent difference in the forest physiognomy. The basalt-derived soil in 23 plots had significantly higher availability of Ca (47.0 cmol(+) kg?1 soil), Mg (2.59), and K (0.96) than the mica schist derived soil (Ca—18.4, Mg—1.29, and K—0.66) in the remaining 27 plots, though both soils would be classified as eutrophic. A total of 59 species belonging to 27 families were encountered in the area as a whole, of which 36 were common to both soils. In total, 16 species occurred exclusively on the mica schist soil and 7 on the basaltic soil. Myracrodruon urundeuva Allem. (Anacardiaceae) and Tabebuia roseo-alba (Ridl.) Sandwith (Bignoniaceae) were species with high importance values in the forest as a whole. Though there was no significant difference in the diversity index between the two soils, the importance values of these species was larger in the basalt-derived soil with higher nutrient availability.  相似文献

Germination, growth and survival of green Berberis thunbergii and its purple ornamental form, Berberis thunbergii var. atropurpurea, were compared in five natural environments (full sun meadow, edge of woods, moist woods, dry woods, pine woods) to determine whether these two forms have a similar ability to naturalize. Berberis thunbergii and Berberis thunbergii var. atropurpurea had similar germination rates of about 25% at the end of 3 years. Most of the seed germination occurred in year one (89%), with a small amount of additional germination in year two (10%), and even less in year three (1%). Greatest germination occurred in the moist woods and full sun meadow sites and the least occurred at the pine woods site. Germination was reduced in the pine woods environment by the thick leaf litter layer present there. Barberry seedling survival during the first year was only 22% and survival dropped to 11.3% by the end of 2 years. Purple barberry seedlings had a lower 2 year survival rate than green barberry. There was no difference in seedling growth between purple and green barberry seedlings, but surviving seedling growth rates at the five environments were comparable. Seedlings achieved maximum growth in the edge of woods environment, but also grew well in the full sun meadow environment. At harvest, the full sun meadow had the greatest number of seedlings present, while no seedlings survived in the pine woods site.  相似文献

Distribution of small roots (diameter between 2 mm and 5 mm) was studied in 19 pits with a total of 72 m2 trench profile walls in pure stands of Fagus sylvatica and Picea abies. Root positions within the walls were marked and transformed into x-coordinates and y-coordinates. In a GIS-based evaluation, zones of potential influence around each root were calculated. The total potential influence produced isoline maps of relative root influence zones, thus indicating small root clustering. The questions studied were (1) whether there were marked clusters of small roots in the soil and (2) whether trees surrounding the pit (defined as tree density) correlate with the root abundance and distribution on the trench profile walls. Small roots of both species showed maximum abundance in the top 20 cm of the soil, where pronounced root clusters occurred next to areas with only low root accumulation. The area of root clusters did not differ significantly between the two stands. Weighted clumping, WC, calculated as a product of root class, and its area was used as an index of root clustering, which again did not differ between beech and spruce stands. However, evaluations on a single root level showed that beech achieved the same degree of clustering with lower number of roots. Regardless of soil properties related to root clusters, a significantly higher clustering acquired per root for beech than for spruce suggests beech to be more efficient in belowground acquisition of space. Because none of the parameters describing root clustering were correlated with tree density around the investigated soil profiles, clusters of small roots are inherently present within the tree stands.  相似文献

Stegastes adustus and Stegastes planifrons are two species of damselfishes commonly found in the Caribbean. These territorial fishes have been widely studied due to their major ecological role on coral reef in controlling the growth of macroalgae that compete with corals for space and, inversely, on their deleterious role in destroying coral tissues to impulse the development of algae. However, few studies were conducted on the biotic and abiotic components of their territories. In the present study, territory size and surfaces of benthic components (macroalgae, algal turf, massive corals, branching corals, Milleporidae, sponges, sand and rubbles) were estimated for the two species at two contrasted sites. At Ilet Pigeon site (IP), the two damselfishes were found at different depth and exhibited different territory sizes. S. adustus defended a larger territory characterized by massive corals, sand and Milleporidae, while S. planifrons territories were smaller, deeper and characterized by branching corals, sponges and rubble. At Passe-à-Colas site (PC), the two fish species coexisted in the same depth range and defended territories of similar size. Their territories presented higher proportions of macroalgae, but smaller surfaces of Milleporidae than at IP. At PC, the main difference between the two species was a higher surface of massive corals inside S. planifrons territories than S. adustus territories. Differences in microhabitat characteristics between the two Stegastes seemed mostly site related. This resulted from the high plasticity of two species, allowing them to persist on Caribbean coral reefs after the decline of most branching acroporids, their former favorite habitats.  相似文献

Fluxes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) may play an important role for losses of C and N from the soils of forest ecosystems, especially under conditions of high precipitation. We studied DOC and DON fluxes and concentrations in relation to precipitation intensity in a subtropical montane Chamaecyparis obtusa var. formosana forest in Taiwan. Our objective was, to quantify DOC and DON fluxes and to understand the role of high precipitation for DOC and DON export in this ecosystem. From 2005 to 2008 we sampled bulk precipitation, throughfall, forest floor percolates and seepage (60 cm) and analyzed DOC, DON and mineral N concentrations. Average DOC fluxes in the soil were extremely high (962 and 478 kg C ha?1 year?1 in forest floor percolates and seepage, respectively) while DON fluxes were similar to other (sub)tropical ecosystems (16 and 8 kg N ha?1 year?1, respectively). Total N fluxes in the soil were dominated by DON. Dissolved organic C and N concentrations in forest floor percolates were independent of the water flux. No dilution effect was visible. Instead, the pool size of potentially soluble DOC and DON was variable as indicated by different DOC and DON concentrations in forest floor percolates at similar precipitation amounts. Therefore, we hypothesized, that these pools are not likely to be depleted in the long term. The relationship between water fluxes in bulk precipitation and DOC and DON fluxes in forest floor percolates was positive (DOC r = 0.908, DON r = 0.842, respectively, Spearman rank correlation). We concluded, that precipitation is an important driver for DOC and DON losses from this subtropical montane forest and that these DOC losses play an important role in the soil C cycle of this ecosystem. Moreover, we found that the linear relationship between bulk precipitation and DOC and DON fluxes in forest floor percolates of temperate ecosystems does not hold when incorporating additional data on these fluxes from (subtropical) ecosystems.  相似文献

The anamorphic fungus Sporothrix inflata, known as a soil-borne fungus with worldwide distribution, was isolated for the first time from the cortex and central cylinder of living and dead roots of healthy and diseased oak trees (Quercus robur and Q. petraea). Isolation frequencies of S. inflata from oak roots varied according to the health status of trees, oak species, study sites, soil depth and root diameter. Colony morphology and growth rate of isolates are influenced by colony age and type of culture medium.  相似文献

A major part of the dissolved organic matter produced in the organic layers of forest ecosystems and leached into the mineral soil is retained by the upper subsoil horizons. The retention is selective and thus dissolved organic matter in the subsoils has different composition than dissolved organic matter leached from the forest floor. Here we report on changes in the composition of dissolved organic matter with soil depth based on C-to-N ratios, XAD-8 fractionation, wet-chemical analyses (lignin-derived CuO oxidation products, hydrolysable sugars and amino sugars) and liquid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Dissolved organic matter was sampled directly beneath the forest floor using tension-free lysimeters and at 90cm depth by suction cups in Haplic Arenosols under Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Rendzic Leptosols under European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) forest. At both sites, the concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) decreased but not as strongly as reported for deeply weathered soils. The decrease in DOC was accompanied by strong changes in the composition of dissolved organic matter. The proportion of the XAD-8-adsorbable (hydrophobic) fraction, carboxyl and aromatic C, and the concentrations of lignin-derived phenols decreased whereas the concentrations of sugars, amino sugars, and nitrogen remained either constant or increased. A general feature of the compositional changes within the tested compound classes was that the ratios of neutral to acidic compounds increased with depth. These results indicate that during the transport of dissolved organic matter through the soils, oxidatively degraded lignin-derived compounds were preferentially retained while potentially labile material high in nitrogen and carbohydrates tended to remain dissolved. Despite the studied soils' small capacity to sorb organic matter, the preferential retention of potentially refractory and acidic compounds suggests sorption by the mineral soil matrix rather than biodegradation to govern the retention of dissolved organic matter even in soils with a low sorption capacity.  相似文献

Terrestrial organic carbon is exported to freshwater systems where it serves as substrate for bacterial growth. Temporal variations in the terrigenous organic carbon support for aquatic bacteria are not well understood. In this paper, we demonstrate how the combined influence of landscape characteristics and hydrology can shape such variations. Using a 13-day bioassay approach, the production and respiration of bacteria were measured in water samples from six small Swedish streams (64° N, 19° E), draining coniferous forests, peat mires, and mixed catchments with typical boreal proportions between forest and mire coverage. Forest drainage supported higher bacterial production and higher bacterial growth efficiency than drainage from mires. The areal export of organic carbon was several times higher from mire than from forest at low runoff, while there was no difference at high flow. As a consequence, mixed streams (catchments including both mire and forest) were dominated by mire organic carbon with low support of bacterial production at low discharge situations but dominated by forest carbon supporting higher bacterial production at high flow. The stimulation of bacterial growth during high-flow episodes was a result of higher relative export of organic carbon via forest drainage rather than increased drainage of specific “high-quality” carbon pools in mire or forest soils.  相似文献

The mass transfer from root to soil by means of rhizodeposition has been studied in grasses and forest trees, but its role in fruit trees is still unknown. In this study, N fluxes from roots to soil were estimated by applying a 15N mass balance technique to the soil–tree system. Apple (Malus domestica) trees were pre-labelled with 15N and then grown outdoors in 40 L pots for one vegetative season in (1) a coarse-textured, low organic matter soil, (2) a coarse-textured, high organic matter soil, and (3) a fine-textured, high organic matter soil. At tree harvest the 15N abundance of the soils was higher than at transplanting, but the total amount of 15N present in the tree–soil system was similar at transplanting and tree harvest. The soils had a strong effect on N fluxes from and to the soil. In the fine-textured soil, 11% of the total plant-derived nitrogen was transferred to the soil, compared with 2–5% in the two coarse-textured soils. Rhizodeposition was higher in the fine soil (18% of the primary production) than in the coarse-textured soils, whereas higher soil organic matter depressed rhizodeposition. Nitrogen uptake was almost double in the coarse-textured, high organic matter soil versus the other soils. Our results indicate that belowground primary productivity is significantly underestimated if based on root production data only. Rhizodeposition represents a major process, whose role should not be underestimated in carbon and nitrogen cycles in orchard ecosystems.  相似文献

To examine the influence of microbial carbon (C) availability on the internal soil nitrogen (N) cycles under moder and mull forest floor types within the same slope sequence, surface mineral soils (0–5cm depth) taken at upper (moder-type forest floor) and lower (mull-type forest floor) positions on a slope in a Cryptomeria japonica D. Don plantation were incubated for 300days. During the incubation, changes in net and gross N transformations, the organic C and N pools, and microbial respiration were monitored. Despite relatively small differences in net N mineralization in both soils, very rapid rates of gross N transformations were found in mull soil during the initial 15days of the experiment. A rapid net nitrification occurred after days 150 and 100 in moder and mull soils, respectively, presumably because of decreased microbial C availability. However, a rapid net nitrification also occurred in the mull soil during the initial 15days when microbial C availability was high, and gross nitrification was detected in both soils, except at day 0 in the moder soil. Changes in gross N transformations and in organic C and N pools over the experiment suggested that the start of rapid net nitrification might be influenced not only by microbial C availability, but also by the microbial availability of N relative to C.  相似文献

The responses of Quercus robur (oak) and Fagus sylvatica (beech) seedlings to four different light environments (full, 50%, 40% and 15% sunlight) and to a rapid increase in irradiance were explored during the summer, after 2 years of growth in a forest nursery at Nancy (France). Significant differences between the two species were found for most variables. Phenotypic plasticity for morphological variables (root-shoot ratio, leaf size, leaf weight ratio) was higher in beech than in oak, while the reverse was true for anatomical (stomatal density, epidermis thickness, exchange surface area of the palisade parenchyma) and physiological (maximum photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, Rubisco activity) variables. Predawn photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) was higher in oak than in beech in all light environments except in 15% sunlight. Fv/Fm was significantly lower in 100% sunlight than in the other light environments in beech but not in oak. Maximum photosynthetic rates (Amax) increased with increasing light availability in the two species but they were always higher in oak than in beech. Oak exhibited higher Rubisco activity than beech in full sunlight. The transfer of shade-adapted seedlings to the open caused a decrease of Fv/Fm, which was larger for beech than for oak. Transferred oak but not beech plants recovered gradually to the control Fv/Fm values. The decreased chlorophyll content and the increased non-photochemical quenching observed in high-light beech seedlings were not enough to avoid photoinhibition. The results suggest that a greater tolerance of strong irradiance is linked to an enhanced physiological plasticity (variables related to photosynthesis), while shade tolerance relies on an enhanced plasticity in light-harvesting variables (crown morphology and chlorophyll content).  相似文献

This study examined the biomass and carbon pools of the main ecosystem components in an age sequence of five Korean pine plantation forest stands in central Korea. The C contents in the tree and ground vegetation biomass, coarse woody debris, forest floor, and mineral soil were estimated by analyzing the C concentration of each component. The aboveground and total tree biomass increased with increasing stand age. The highest C concentration across this chronosequence was found in the tree branch while the lowest C concentration was found in the ground vegetation. The observed C contents for tree components, ground vegetation, and coarse woody debris were generally lower than the predicted C contents estimated from a biomass C factor of 0.5. Forest floor C content was age-independent. Total mineral soil C content appeared to decline initially after establishing Korean pine plantations and recover by the stand age of 35 years. Although aboveground tree biomass C content showed considerable accumulation with increasing age, the relative contribution of below ground C to total ecosystem C content varied substantially. These results suggest that successional development as temporal factor has a key role in estimating the C storage in Korean pine plantation forests.  相似文献

Management practices of arable systems determine the distribution of soil organic matter thereby changing decomposer animal activity and their impact on nutrient mineralization, plant growth and plant-herbivore interactions. Decomposer-mediated changes in plant growth and insect pest performance were investigated in wheat-aphid model systems in the greenhouse. Three types of litter distribution were established: litter patch at the soil surface (simulating mulching), litter patch deeper in soil (simulating ploughing) and litter homogeneously mixed into soil (simulating disk cultivation). The litter was labelled with (15)N to follow the mineralization and uptake of nutrients by the plants. Earthworms (Aporrectodea caliginosa) and Collembola (Protaphorura armata) were included as representatives of major functional groups of decomposers. Wheat (Triticum aestivum) was planted and aphids (Rhophalosiphum padi) were introduced to leaves as one of the most important pests. Earthworms, Collembola and litter distribution affected plant growth, N acquisition and aphid development in an interactive way. Earthworms and Collembola increased biomass of seeds, shoots and roots of wheat. Increased plant growth by earthworms and Collembola was mainly due to increased transfer of N from soil (rather than litter) into plants. Despite increasing plant growth, earthworms reduced aphid reproduction. Aphid reproduction was not correlated closely with plant N concentrations, but rather with the concentration of litter N in wheat. Unexpectedly, both Collembola and earthworms predominantly affected the mobilization of N from soil organic matter, and by altering the distribution of litter earthworms reduced infestation of crops by aphids via reducing plant capture of litter N, in particular if the litter was concentrated deeper in soil. The results suggest that management practices stimulating a continuous moderate increase in nutrient mobilization from soil organic matter rather than nutrient flushes from decomposing fresh organic matter result in maximum plant growth with minimum plant pest infestation.  相似文献

The effects of forest thinning and wood quality on wood decomposition in the mineral soil were investigated in a Chinese pine (Pinus tabuliformis Carriére) plantation in northern China by measuring mass loss and changes in wood properties (carbohydrates, lignin and nitrogen (N) concentrations) in wood stakes of two tree species—loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.). Stakes were inserted to a 20 cm soil depth in stands with three thinning levels (low, moderate, and heavy) and an unharvested control and removed after 1 year. There were significant differences in stake mass loss among the treatments. The species effect on the stake mass loss was marginally significant. Wood N content of both species increased during decomposition in all thinning treatments, and was only correlated with aspen mass loss. Wood properties of stakes placed in each stand before insertion (t?=?0) were similar, except for pine lignin concentration and aspen lignin: N ratio, but neither had any effect on thinning treatment results. Lignin concentration increased and carbohydrate concentration decreased in both aspen and pine wood stakes during decomposition across all thinning treatments, which suggests that brown-rot fungi are dominant wood-decomposers on our study site. We conclude that thinning has a significant influence on the wood decomposition in the mineral soil of this Chinese pine plantation.  相似文献

The replacement of native forests by Pinus radiata plantations modifies habitat availability and quality for wildlife, constituting a threat to species survival. However, the presence of understory in mature pine plantations minimizes the negative impacts of native forest replacement, rendering a secondary habitat for wildlife. Whether forest-dwelling species recolonize clear-felled areas pending on the spontaneous development of accompanying vegetation growing after harvesting is yet to be assessed. In this context, we analyze the abundance, movement and habitat selection of the endemic ground beetle Ceroglossus chilensis (Coleoptera: Carabidae) in an anthropic forest landscape consisting of native forest remnants, adult pine plantations (>?20 years) with a well-developed understory, and young (1–2 years) pine plantations with varying degrees of accompanying vegetation development. Particularly, we analyze the likelihood that C. chilensis would recolonize young pine plantations depending on the presence (>?70% cover) or the absence (<?20% cover) of this accompanying vegetation. C. chilensis shows a greater probability of selecting habitats with understory (pine plantations and native forest) and young plantations with accompanying vegetation (future understory) than habitats without such vegetation. Movement of C. chilensis also favors their permanence in habitats with understory vegetation, coinciding with higher abundances than in young pine plantations devoid of accompanying vegetation. Hence, the effect of clearcutting could be mitigated by allowing the development of accompanying vegetation into a future understory, which facilitates the recolonization of pine plantations and its use as secondary habitat for wildlife.  相似文献
