Mothers are predicted to invest in their offspring depending on the quality of their mate, their opportunity to invest in future reproduction and the characteristics of the habitat in which their offspring will be born. Recent studies have suggested a transfer of maternal immunity to offspring as an induced response to the local presence of parasites in the environment, but evidence has been indirect. Here, we show the presence of antibodies against the Lyme disease agent Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, a spirochaete transmitted by the seabird tick Ixodes uriae, in the eggs of kittiwakes Rissa tridactyla. We report higher prevalence of antibodies against Borrelia in eggs from breeding areas with higher prevalence and abundance of ticks. Further, high repeatabilities of antibody-positive eggs within clutches and between first and replacement clutches show that, within a breeding season, females differ consistently with respect to the expression of this induced maternal response. Our results suggest that mothers can alter investment in their young depending on local conditions. Such maternal effects clearly have implications for the ecology and evolution of host-parasite interactions.  相似文献

Maternal antibodies protect chicks from infection with pathogens early in life and may impact pathogen dynamics due to the alteration of the proportion of susceptible individuals in a population. We investigated the transfer of maternal antibodies against avian influenza virus (AIV) in a key AIV host species, the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos). Combining observations in both the field and in mallards kept in captivity, we connected maternal AIV antibody concentrations in eggs to (i) female body condition, (ii) female AIV antibody concentration, (iii) egg laying order, (iv) egg size and (v) embryo sex. We applied maternity analysis to the eggs collected in the field to account for intraspecific nest parasitism, which is reportedly high in Anseriformes, detecting parasitic eggs in one out of eight clutches. AIV antibody prevalence in free-living and captive females was respectively 48% and 56%, with 43% and 24% of the eggs receiving these antibodies maternally. In both field and captive study, maternal AIV antibody concentrations in egg yolk correlated positively with circulating AIV antibody concentrations in females. In the captive study, yolk AIV antibody concentrations correlated positively with egg laying order. Female body mass and egg size from the field and captive study, and embryos sex from the field study were not associated with maternal AIV antibody concentrations in eggs. Our study indicates that maternal AIV antibody transfer may potentially play an important role in shaping AIV infection dynamics in mallards.  相似文献

The transfer of antibodies from mother to offspring provides crucial protection against infection to offspring during early life in humans and domestic and laboratory animals. However, few studies have tested the consequences of variation in maternal antibody transfer for offspring fitness in the wild. Further, separating the immunoprotective effects of antibodies from their association with nutritional resources provided by mothers is difficult. Here, we measured plasma levels of total and parasite-specific antibodies in neonatal (less than 10 days old) wild Soay sheep over 25 years to quantify variation in maternal antibody transfer and test its association with offspring survival. Maternal antibody transfer was predicted by maternal age and previous antibody responses, and was consistent within mothers across years. Neonatal total IgG antibody levels were positively related to early growth, suggesting they reflected nutritional transfer. Neonatal parasite-specific IgG levels positively predicted first-year survival, independent of lamb weight, total IgG levels and subsequent lamb parasite-specific antibody levels. This relationship was partly mediated via an indirect negative association with parasite burden. We show that among-female variation in maternal antibody transfer can have long-term effects on offspring growth, parasite burden and fitness in the wild, and is likely to impact naturally occurring host–parasite dynamics.  相似文献

Newborn animals do not have a fully functional immune system and are thus impaired in their ability to fight parasites. Mothers can therefore increase the survival probability of their young by providing them with passive immunity, e.g. in the form of maternal antibodies transferred via the placenta or the eggs. The maternal responses are only induced when parasites are present, and have been observed not only in vertebrates but also in invertebrates. However, while these parasite-induced maternal effects are known to reduce the harmful effects of common parasites, they may also impose costs for the young, either because the maternal response impairs parental performance, or because maternally transmitted products moderate offspring development. We experimentally tested these two hypotheses in a wild great tit population. We exposed birds to a common ectoparasite before egg-laying to induce the maternal response, and thereafter separated egg-mediated maternal effects from effects on post-laying parental performance by cross-fostering whole clutches. To assess the costs of this response without its confounding benefits, we kept nests free of parasites after hatching. Since the costs of maternal effects can be expressed differently under relaxed and harsh rearing conditions, we simultaneously manipulated clutch size. First, parasite-exposed parents raised lighter young, suggesting that parasite defence or the induced maternal response are costly to the parents and reduce their capacity to raise young. Second, under relaxed but not under harsh rearing conditions, young with the flea-induced maternal effect were heavier and were in better body condition than controls, suggesting that the maternally transferred products can be allocated to physiological functions beyond parasite defence.  相似文献

Secondary sexual characters have been hypothesized to revealthe ability of males to resist debilitating parasites. Althoughsuch reliable signaling of parasite resistance may be maintainedby parasite–host coevolution, maternal effects potentiallyprovide a previously neglected factor that could affect thelevel of genetic variation in resistance to parasites. Thatcould be the case because maternal effects have an entirelyenvironmental basis, or because they can maintain considerableamounts of genetic variation through epistatic effects, evenin the presence of strong directional selection. Maternal effectshave been shown to occur as maternal allocation of immune factorsto offspring, and such allocation may depend on the mating prospectsof sons, causing mothers to differentially allocate maternaleffects to eggs in species subject to intense sexual selection.Here we show that a maternal effect through innate antibacterialimmune defense, lysozyme, which is transferred from the motherto the egg in birds, is positively associated with the evolutionof secondary sexual characters. Previous studies have shownthat females differentially allocate lysozyme to their eggswhen mated to attractive males, and elevated levels of lysozymeare associated with reduced hatching failure and superior healthamong neonates and adults. In this study, comparative analysesof lysozyme from eggs of 85 species of birds showed a strongpositive relationship between brightness of male plumage andegg lysozyme, even when controlling for potentially confoundingvariables. These findings suggest that maternal immune factorsmay play a role in the evolution of secondary sexual characters.  相似文献

Avian eggs contain substantial amounts of maternal androgens. The concentrations of these yolk androgens are affected by the maternal environment, such as the level of social competition, parasite exposure or food conditions. Since yolk androgens have been shown to affect a wide array of offspring traits, they may adjust the chicks to the expected post-hatching environment, but experimental evidence is still scarce. We investigate in colonial breeding black-headed gulls whether high concentrations of yolk androgens, such as those found in environments with high numbers of social interactions, facilitate aggressiveness and territorial behaviour of the chicks. Black-headed gulls are highly suitable for this, as the semi-precocial chicks defend the natal territory and food against intruders. We manipulated yolk androgen concentrations and investigated their role in both within-nest and between-nest aggression. We found that chicks hatching from androgen-treated eggs defended the natal territory more often than their nest mates from control eggs, without increasing sibling aggression. This suggests that variation in yolk androgen concentrations in relation to the social environment of the mother may indeed allow adjustment of the offspring''s behaviour to the expected frequency of territorial interactions with conspecifics post-hatching.  相似文献

Conspecific brood parasitism (CBP) is a common strategy in several species of birds. Currently, some studies suggest that relatedness between host and parasite enhances CBP, since indirect fitness benefits could select for acceptance of related eggs by hosts. Conversely, parasites should avoid laying eggs in nests of relatives if this is costly for the host. Based on the latter argument, kinship should not promote brood parasitism. A recent model clarified this relationship, and showed that kinship can promote brood parasitism, assuming kin recognition. However, in that model kin recognition was assumed perfect. Here we present a model that addresses the role of relatedness and kin selection in CBP, when kin recognition is not perfect and hosts do not always detect parasitism. We consider both the indirect fitness of the parasite and the possible responses of the host. Our results indicate that the existence and accuracy of a kin recognition system is crucial to the final outcome. When CBP represents a cost to the host, a parasitic female that has the choice should avoid parasitizing relatives, unless (1) the costs are not too high and (2) hosts can accurately enough recognize eggs laid by relatives, rejecting them less often than eggs laid by nonkin. But if ‘parasitism’ enhances the direct fitness of the host (which is possible in species with precocial young) parasites should choose relatives whenever possible, even if hosts do not recognize kin eggs. Variation in maternal investments to offspring presumably reflects an optimization of resource allocation such that a female's fitness is maximized. In birds, both egg size and yolk constituents are examples of resources that can vary among offspring within a clutch. Egg size and maternally-derived steroid hormone concentrations present in yolk have been characterized for many species that lay small clutches or have altricial young, but little information is available for species that lay moderate to large clutches of precocial young. In this study, we recorded laying position, measured fresh egg mass and determined maternally-derived testosterone and estradiol concentrations present in yolks for whole clutches of free-living Canada geese Branta canadensis maxima to assess variation in maternal resources within clutches. We found that egg size varied non-linearly across the laying sequence such that first laid eggs were small, the largest eggs in the clutch occurred in the second and third positions, and size declined in eggs laid in subsequent positions. Concentration of testosterone in the yolk followed a pattern in which the first and second laid eggs have the highest concentrations within a clutch and declining concentrations in subsequently laid eggs. In contrast, maternally-derived yolk estradiol concentrations (measured in a subset of clutches) did not change across the laying sequence.  相似文献

Raising genetically unrelated young is maladaptive, yet brood parasitism is widespread in birds. In several systems, hosts can evolve near-perfect defences against the parasite (discrimination and rejection of unlike eggs), making it difficult to understand how the parasite continues to exist. This study demonstrates costs to host defences (e.g. rejection of one's own eggs) such that once the parasite goes extinct on a particular host species, defence mechanisms are selectively disadvantageous. The consequent loss of host defences, and potential for re-exploitation of the host by the parasite, can explain the continued persistence of avian brood parasites. The results provide one general explanation for coexistence of parasites and their hosts.  相似文献

During egg formation, female birds deposit antibodies against parasites and pathogens they were exposed to before egg laying into the yolk. In captive bird species, it has been shown that these maternal immunoglobulins (maternal yolk IgGs) can protect newly hatched offspring against infection. However, direct evidence for such benefits in wild birds is hitherto lacking. We investigated (1) if nestling Great Tits Parus major originating from eggs with naturally high levels of maternal yolk IgG are less susceptible to a common, nest-based ectoparasite, (2) if maternal yolk IgGs influence nestling development and in particular, their own immune defence, and (3) if there is a negative correlation between levels of maternal yolk IgG in host eggs and the reproductive success of ectoparasitic fleas feeding on the nestlings. Counter to expectations, we found no indication that maternally transferred yolk IgGs have direct beneficial effects on nestling development, nestling immune response or nestling resistance or tolerance to fleas. Furthermore, we found no negative correlation between host yolk IgG levels and parasite fecundity. Thus, whereas previous work has unequivocally shown that prenatal maternal effects play a crucial role in shaping the parasite resistance of nestling birds, our study indicates that other egg components, such as hormones, carotenoids or other immuno-active substances, which bird females can adjust more quickly than yolk IgG, might mediate these effects.  相似文献

Plaice were immunized against rabbit red blood cells (rbc) and the haemagglutinating activity in their sera and eggs was isolated by gel filtration in Sephacryl S300 SF. A "heavy" (greater than 6.69 X 10(5) Daltons) and a "light" (less than 2.32 X 10(5) Daltons) component of haemagglutinating activity were present in plaice immune serum and eggs. The "heavy" haemagglutinating component had the characteristics of immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibody. By contrast the "light" component was suppressed greatly by monosaccharides but not by 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME) and it was not precipitable against heterologous rabbit anti-plaice Ig immune serum. Since this "light" component was also identified in the serum and eggs of non-immunized plaice the activity was attributed to non-specific lectin-like activity. The presence of an inducible, high molecular weight, haemagglutinating Ig-like protein in plaice serum and eggs suggests the possibility of transfer of passive adaptive immunity from mother to young in this fish.  相似文献

1. In many animals immunity is not fully developed until adulthood but the young still need protection against various sets of pathogens. Thus, bird nestlings are highly dependent on antibodies received from their mother (in the eggs) during their rapid early growth period. The relationship between maternal immunity and the development of neonates' own immunity has been poorly studied. 2. It has been suggested that immune function plays an important part in mediating resource competition between different life-history traits, e.g. growth and reproduction. Maternal investment of antibodies has potentially permanent effects on offspring phenotype. Thus, the trade-offs between the immune function and other important life-history traits in the offspring will also affect the fitness of the mother. 3. Our supplemental feeding experiment in the magpie Pica pica indicates that the immunoglobulin levels of offspring at hatching are dependent on a mother's nutritional condition. In addition, the amount of maternal immunoglobulins transferred to offspring increases along the laying order within a nest. 4. We also found that at the age of 8-10 days the immunoglobulin production of the offspring has already begun. Furthermore, the maternal immunoglobulin levels of the offspring at hatching were positively related to their immunoglobulin levels on day 10. 5. Maternal immunoglobulins did not significantly affect offspring growth, but there was a negative relationship between self-produced immunoglobulins and growth over the first 10 days, indicating a trade-off between these traits. Nestlings' weight, however, had a positive relationship with immunoglobulin production suggesting that the observed trade-off between growth and immunoglobulin production is due to catch-up growth of nestlings with a low hatching weight. We found that within nests nestlings with higher maternal antibody levels had higher survival rate until day 20, but between nests there was an opposite relationship. 6. Evidently, there is a trade-off, in magpies, between maternal resources, immune function and growth, shaping the evolution of maternal investment in offspring immunity.  相似文献

The circulating antibody which reacted with sonicated spores of Myxobolus artus was detected in some naturally infected carp. However, some other fish had no detectable sign of infection, though they had the antibody. When carp were injected either with intact or sonicated spores, the antibody was not produced, while fish injected either with developing stages (presporogonic and sporoblast stages) of the parasite or sonicated spores with bovine serum albumin elicited the antibody production. The results of the injection experiments suggest that (1) developing stages have antigenicity to carp, and (2) spores have lost the antigenicity; sonicated spores are haptens, with which the antibody can react. In an indirect fluorescent antibody technique, sera positive for the antigen reacted with developing stages of the parasite, but not with the spore.
The mechanism of the host immune response against M. artus is discussed in relation to a previous observation that the parasite sometimes underwent abnormal development, in which host encapsulation was imperfect or even lacking, probably leading to degeneration of pseudocysts before the completion of spore formation. It is plausible that the antibody was produced when pseudocysts which showed abnormal growth ruptured during their developing stages, resulting in exposure of the young parasite to the host immune system.  相似文献

Beaver J. P. and Dobson C. 1978. Acetylcholinesterase levels in Angiostrongylus cantonensis in relation to the immune response in rats. International Journal for Parasitology8: 9–13. Angiostrongylus cantonensis larvae and adult nematodes synthesize three acetylcholinesterase (AChE) isozymes. The Km of this isozyme complex changes with the development and migrations of the parasite in the rat host. The levels of parasite AChE changed as the development of A. cantonensis progressed; increasing quantities of AChE were found in young adult A. cantonensis from the brain of rats. After migration to the pulmonary arteries, the quantity of AChE in the parasite was reduced and continued to decline in the aging parasite. Anti-A. cantonensis antibody inhibited parasite AChE activity; this inhibition of the parasite AChE activity changed at stages during development of the parasite which suggested variation in parasite AChE isozyme levels. Haemagglutinating anti-A. cantonensis antibody appeared in the serum of infected rats when the parasites commenced to lay eggs and increased in titre thereafter until 103 days after infection.  相似文献

The developmental rate of cuckoo embryos and their hatching size is greater than that of host species, which may require more nutrient resources in the egg and more intensive gas exchange during development. In the present study, we compared various egg characteristics of a brood parasite, the common cuckoo Cuculus canorus, and its frequent host, the great reed warbler Acrocephalus arundinaceus. As maternally‐derived testosterone is known to enhance growth rate of embryos and hatchlings, cuckoo eggs are expected to contain higher concentration of testosterone than host eggs. In addition, we expected higher concentration of antioxidants in cuckoo eggs to protect embryos from oxidative stress associated with accelerated growth. Our results showed that cuckoo eggs had thicker shells and higher pore density than great reed warbler eggs. Yolk was significantly heavier in cuckoo eggs and contained higher concentrations of carotenoids and vitamin E, however, yolk androgen and immunoglobulin concentrations were lower in cuckoo eggs as compared to great reed warbler eggs. We also examined whether eggshell colour was associated to egg quality, and detected a positive association between blue‐green chroma and yolk antioxidant concentration in both species, suggesting that eggshell colour reflects the antioxidant investment of the female into the eggs. Our results suggest that cuckoo females increase the size, growth rate and competitive ability of their young by providing them with more nutrients and more dietary antioxidants for embryonic development, and not through elevated yolk testosterone or antibody levels. In addition, increased porosity of cuckoo eggshells may allow embryos to develop more rapidly because of a greater capacity of gas exchange.  相似文献

We looked for evidence for the hypothesis that exposure of female birds to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) results in alteration of blood steroid hormone concentrations and alters subsequent hormone transfer of steroids to eggs. Eggs of three-egg clutches were collected from a PCB-exposed common tern (Sterna hirundo) colony (Ram Island, Buzzards Bay, MA, USA) and from a relatively clean colony (Bodkin Island, Chesapeake Bay, MD, USA), and were analyzed for concentrations of organochlorine contaminants and steroid hormones (17beta-estradiol, 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone, testosterone and androstenedione). There was no relationship between total PCBs and steroid concentrations considering all eggs together, considering eggs of different laying order or considering differences between sequentially laid eggs in a clutch. Similarly, concentrations of di- and tri-chlorinated biphenyls and steroids in eggs were not related. The concentrations of PCBs, mercury and selenium were below estimated thresholds for toxicity to embryos. Maternal steroids, except estradiol, were present in yolk of all eggs, with increasing concentrations in the second and third eggs laid. Our data provided no evidence for a maternal toxicological event that might alter the amount of maternal steroid hormone transferred to eggs.  相似文献

Significant protection against infection with 10 or 30 metacercariae of Fasciola hepatica was conferred on naive rats by the passive transfer of serum derived from rats which had been exposed to primary and challenge infections with 5 or 10 and 30 or 20 metacercariae respectively. Immune serum did not have a pronounced effect on the mortality of metacercariae in vitro. However, its presence was associated with the formation of a precipitate on the tegument of each metacercaria and in the culture medium. The precipitate contained rat antibody and other components, presumably parasite antigens, which elicited the formation of antibody when the precipitate was injected into rats. Viability of metacercariae cultured in immune and normal sera as well as freshly excysted specimens was tested in rats by intraperitoneal infection. Metacercariae cultured in immune serum did not develop. By comparison with the viability of freshly excysted metacercariae, that of some metacercariae cultured in normal serum was impaired; this was attributed to inadequacies in the culture technique. A relationship between precipitate formation in vitro and impaired viability of metacercariae in vivo has yet to be established.  相似文献

We compared genera of nonparasitic cuckoos and two groups ofparasitic cuckoos: those raised together with host young ("nonejectors")and those in which the newly hatched cuckoo either ejects thehost eggs or chicks, or kills the host young ("ejectors"). Nonejectorsare similar to their hosts in body size and parasitize largerhosts than do ejectors, which parasitize hosts much smallerthan themselves. In both types of parasite, the cuckoo's eggtends to match the host eggs in size. To achieve this, nonejectorshave evolved a smaller egg for their body size than have nonparasiticcuckoos, and ejectors have evolved an even smaller egg. Amongejector cuckoo genera, larger cuckoos have larger eggs relativeto the eggs of their hosts, and the relationship between cuckooegg volume (mass of the newly-hatched cuckoo) and host egg volume(mass to be ejected) did not differ from that predicted by weight-liftingallometry. However, comparing among Cuculus cuckoo species,the allometric slope differed from the predicted, so it is notclear that egg size is related to the need to give the cuckoochick sufficient strength for ejection. Comparing the two mostspeciose ejector genera, Chrysococcyx cuckoos (smaller and parasitizedome-nesting hosts) lay eggs more similar in size to their host'seggs than do Cuculus cuckoos (larger and parasitize open cup–nestinghosts). Closer size-matching of host eggs in Chrysococcyx mayreflect the following: (1) selection to reduce adult body massto facilitate entry through small domed nest holes to lay, and(2) less need for a large egg, because longer incubation periodsin dome-nesting hosts allow the young cuckoo more time to growbefore it need eject host eggs.  相似文献

Avian brood parasites lay their eggs in the nests of other birds, and impose the costs associated with rearing parasitic young onto these hosts. Many hosts of brood parasites defend against parasitism by removing foreign eggs from the nest. In systems where parasitic eggs mimic host eggs in coloration and patterning, extensive intraclutch variation in egg appearances may impair the host’s ability to recognize and reject parasitic eggs, but experimental investigation of this effect has produced conflicting results. The cognitive mechanism by which hosts recognize parasitic eggs may vary across brood parasite hosts, and this may explain variation in experimental outcome across studies investigating egg rejection in hosts of egg-mimicking brood parasites. In contrast, for hosts of non-egg-mimetic parasites, intraclutch egg color variation is not predicted to co-vary with foreign egg rejection, irrespective of cognitive mechanism. Here we tested for effects of intraclutch egg color variation in a host of nonmimetic brood parasite by manipulating egg color in American robins (Turdus migratorius), hosts of brown-headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater). We recorded robins’ behavioral responses to simulated cowbird parasitism in nests where color variation was artificially enhanced or reduced. We also quantified egg color variation within and between unmanipulated robin clutches as perceived by robins themselves using spectrophotometric measures and avian visual modeling. In unmanipulated nests, egg color varied more between than within robin clutches. As predicted, however, manipulation of color variation did not affect rejection rates. Overall, our results best support the scenario wherein egg rejection is the outcome of selective pressure by a nonmimetic brood parasite, because robins are efficient rejecters of foreign eggs, irrespective of the color variation within their own clutch.  相似文献

The magnitude of fitness variation caused by maternal effects and, thus, the adaptive significance of maternal traits may depend on environmental quality, generating crossing reaction norms among offspring phenotypes that shape life-history evolution. By manipulating intraclutch variation in egg size and comparing siblings we examined the maternal effects of egg size on offspring performance and tested for the existence of reaction norms to environmental quality using the brown trout Salmo trutta. When sibling groups of small and large eggs were reared separately in a hatchery environment initial size differences disappeared rapidly. However, in semi-natural environments and under direct competition, juveniles from large eggs experienced growth and survival advantages over siblings from small eggs. Moreover, distinct reaction norms existed, with the differences in performance of juveniles from small and large eggs being most pronounced in the poorer growth environments. Our results provide the first direct evidence, to our knowledge, for a causal relationship between egg size and fitness-related traits in fishes, independent of potentially confounding genetic effects. Moreover, they indicate that previous studies have been biased by experimental conditions that excluded competitive asymmetries and environmental variability. The existence of reaction norms indicates a shift in optimal egg size across gradients of environmental quality that probably shapes the evolution of this trait.  相似文献
