The seed damaging fly, Ophiomyia lantanae is a widespread agent that infests the fruits and seeds of Lantana camara. Its effectiveness in reducing seed dispersal or seedling recruitment has not been comprehensively tested. We determined the effects of O. lantanae damage on fruit removal rates of L. camara in a field study. We also investigated recruitment responses (seed germination in growth cabinets and seedling emergence in pot trials) of two common L. camara biotypes, pink and pink-edged red (PER) to O. lantanae damage. We found that fewer damaged fruits were removed than undamaged fruits, suggesting that frugivores select against damaged fruit. In all recruitment experiments, the responses to damage were biotype dependent. In germination experiments, these differential responses were primarily due to significantly reduced germination of damaged PER seeds. Seedling emergence from pots of the PER biotype was also lower in damaged seeds (27.5%) than undamaged seeds (56.1%). In contrast, emergence increased with seed damage in the pink biotype, from 28.2 to 41.1%. O. lantanae damage significantly reduced seed mass only in the smaller seeded PER biotype. In the larger seeded pink biotype, it may have promoted seedling emergence by interfering with dormancy mechanisms. We also examined in situ seed banks at L. camara populations prior to peak seed production. Mean viable seed densities ranged from 78.6 to 402.8 seeds m−2. Of these, non-dormant seeds comprised 24.6 to 98.2 seeds m−2, suggesting that recruitment is unlikely to be seed limited. We conclude that while O. lantanae influences recruitment and dispersal processes, the magnitude of the responses measured are unlikely to greatly influence plant densities in south-east Queensland infestations.  相似文献

Harpagophytum procumbens is a medicinal plant containing several compounds with pharmaceutical activity. Previously, we established shoot culture and in vitro regenerated plants of H. procumbens. In this study, HPLC and LC-ESI-MS were used to identify harpagoside, harpagide, verbascoside and isoverbascoside in various tissues (stems, leaves and callus) of shoots multiplied on Schenk and Hildebrandt (SH) solid medium supplemented with 0.57 μM indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and 8 μM 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP), as well as in stems, leaves and root tubers of in vitro propagated plants grown in the greenhouse for 3, 6 and 12 months. The content of the compounds was also determined by HPLC. For comparison, control H. procumbens plants initiated from seeds were analyzed. H. procumbens shoots grown under in vitro conditions accumulated lower amounts of iridoids and phenylethanoids than the plants derived from them. The levels of analyzed compounds were higher in the organs of 3- or 6-month-old plants than in those of 12-month-old plants. Differences in the distribution of secondary metabolites were also observed between organs. The aerial parts (stems, leaves) of 3-month-old in vitro regenerated plants were characterized by the highest amounts of phenylethanoids, which significantly exceeded those detected in control plants. Total iridoid content, calculated as the sum of harpagoside and harpagide, was highest in the root tubers of 6-month-old plants. In these organs the level of harpagoside was comparable to that in root tubers of 6-month-old seed-propagated plants, but the level of harpagide was much lower.  相似文献

Growth responses of field-grown marigold (Calendula officinalis L.) plants to SO2 (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 ppm) stress were studied at pre-flowering, flowering and post-flowering stages. Low concentrations of SO2 did not cause any noticeable difference in shoot length, flowers and fruits per plant, and in seeds per fruit, but enhanced leaf number, leaf area and root length. With higher concentrations, however, all these parameters declined. Compared with controls, dry mass of leaves and roots was higher with 0.5 ppm SO2 but significantly lower with higher doses at each stage. With a high SO2 dose stomatal pore size increased on adaxial epidermis but decreased on abaxial epidermis. The net photosynthetic rate significantly increased, whereas stomatal conductance and intercellular CO2 concentration decreased with 0.5 ppm SO2 treatment, the reverse being the case with higher concentrations. The photosynthetic pigments declined significantly under high SO2 stress at each stage of plant development, although 0.5 ppm concentration had a stimulatory effect. SO2 stress delayed the development of interfascicular cambium and altered the proportion of the component tissues in the plant axis. The areas of cortex and vasculature in stems and roots decreased, while pith area increased in the treated plants. The length of fibres and vessel elements increased in the stem and decreased in the root, compared with the control. Vessel density and diameter declined in large vascular bundles and increased in small vascular bundles of the stem. In roots, both the parameters gained under heavy SO2 stress.  相似文献

Although some plant responses to salinity have been characterized, the precise mechanisms by which salt stress damages plants are still poorly understood especially in woody plants. In the present study, the physiological and biochemical responses of Broussonetia papyrifera, a tree species of the family, Moraceae, to salinity were studied. In vitro-produced plantlets of B. papyrifera were treated with varying levels of NaCl (0, 50, 100 and 150 mM) in hydroponic culture. Changes in ion contents, accumulation of H2O2, as well as the activities and isoform profiles of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) in the leaves, stems and roots were investigated. Under salt stress, there was higher Na+ accumulation in roots than in stems and leaves, and Ca2 +, Mg2 + and P3 + content, as well as K+/Na+ ratio were affected. NaCl treatment induced an increase in H2O2 contents in the tissues of B. papyrifera. The work demonstrated that activities of antioxidant defense enzymes changed in parallel with the increased H2O2 and salinity appeared to be associated with differential regulation of distinct SOD and POD isoenzymes. Moreover, SDS-PAGE analysis of total proteins extracted from leaves and roots of control and NaCl-treated plantlets revealed that in the leaves salt stress was associated with decrease or disappearance of some protein bands, and induction of a new protein band after exposure to 100 and 150 mM NaCl. In contrast, NaCl stress had little effect on the protein pattern in the roots. In summary, these findings may provide insight into the mechanisms of the response of woody plants to salt stress.  相似文献

The investigation was carried out to evaluate the effect of different doses of gamma rays (100, 200, 300, 400, 500 Gy and zero doses as control) on various morphological aspects of Abelmoschus esculentus. A comparison of the results of different doses with control showed that gamma irradiation significantly affected various parameters. Days to germination were almost the same as compared to control, but 400 Gy took minimum days to germination. Germination % was 100% both in control and the irradiated plants. 100 Gy took minimum days for flower initiation as compared to control and other doses. Fruit initiation early occurred in 100Gy as compared to other doses, and fruit maturation occurred early in 300 Gy as compared to control. Plant height was significantly increased at 500 Gy as compared to control. Number of fruits per plant was significantly decreased at 200 Gy as compared to control. Fruit length decreased in all doses but in control fruit length was maximum. Number of seeds per fruit was maximum at control, fresh and dry weights of seeds were increased in control as compared to other doses. The number of nodes decreased in all doses but in the control the numbers of nodes were maximum. Branches were increased in100Gy as compare to 200, 300,400,500 Gy as well in control. Numbers of leaves were increased in 300 Gy as compared to other doses.  相似文献

Greenhouse experiments were conducted to assess the effect of salinisation of soil on emergence, growth, water content, proline content and mineral accumulation of seedlings of Delonix regia (Hook.) Raf. (Fabaceae). Sodium chloride (NaCl) was added to the soil and salinity was maintained at 0.3, 1.9, 3.9, 6.0 and 7.9 dS m?1. A negative relationship between seedling emergence and salt concentration was obtained. Salinity caused reduction in water content and water potential of tissues (leaves, stems, tap roots and lateral roots) that resulted in internal water deficit to plants. Consequently, shoot and root elongation, leaf expansion and dry matter accumulation in leaves, stems, tap roots and lateral root tissues of seedlings significantly decreased in response to increasing concentration of salt. Proline content in tissues was very low. There were no effective mechanisms to control net uptake of Na on root plasma membrane and subsequently its transport to shoot tissues. Potassium content significantly decreased in tissues in response to salinisation of soil. This tree species is a moderate salt-tolerant glycophytic plant. Nitrogen and calcium content in tissues significantly decreased as soil salinity increased. Phosphors content in tissues exhibited a declining trend with increase in soil salinity. Changes in tissues and whole-plant accumulation pattern of other elements tested, as well as possible mechanisms for avoidance of Na toxicity in this tree species in response to salinisation, are discussed.  相似文献

Effects of water-deficit stress and paclobutrazol (PBZ) on the physiological and biochemical changes in Curcuma alismatifolia Gagnep. cv. Chiang Mai Pink (Zingiberaceae) were investigated. One hundred rhizomes were grown for 30–35 days and then divided into the following 4 treatments: (1) well-watered, (2) not watered, (3) well-watered and treated with 1500 ppm PBZ being applied once to the soil, and (4) not watered but treated with 1500 ppm PBZ. After 50 days of growth, watering was withheld for 30 days. After water stress was initiated, plant height, plant fresh weight, soil water content, relative water content (RWC), electrolyte leakage (EL), proline content, vitamin C and E content, as well as the activities of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the leaves were determined every 10 days. The results showed that water-deficit stress decreased plant height and plant fresh weight, whereas this stress and PBZ did not result in a decrease in these parameters. Water stress reduced RWC, but induced EL and proline content in the leaves. However, the leaves showed opposite results when PBZ was added to the treatments. Some antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and the activities of CAT and SOD were induced in the leaves by PBZ. Moreover, the content of vitamin C, vitamin E and CAT activity were higher in relation to water-deficit stress and PBZ treatments. This indicates that PBZ induced a number of some physiological and biochemical adaptations (maintaining growth and RWC, decreasing EL and proline content, increasing the vitamin C and vitamin E levels, and CAT and SOD activities) that enable the Curcuma plant to tolerate drought.  相似文献

Vicia faba L. seeds were grown in a pot experiment on soil, mine tailings, and a mixture of both to mimic field situations in cultivated contaminated areas near mining sites. Metals in the substrates and their translocation in root, stem and leaf tissues were investigated, including morphological responses of plants growing on mine tailings. Metal concentration – and generally bioaccumulation – was in the order: roots > leaves > stems, except Pb and Cd. Translocation was most significant for Zn and Cd, but limited for Pb. Metal concentration in root and leaf was not proportional to that in the substrates, unexpectedly the minimum being observed in the mixed substrate whilst plant growth was retarded by 20% (38% on tailings). Calcium, pH, organic matter and phosphorus were the main influencing factors for metal translocation. The ultrastructure of V. faba L. cells changed a lot in the mine tailings group: root cell walls were thickened with electron dense Pb, Zn and C particles; in chloroplasts, the number of plastoglobuli increased, whereas the thylakoids were swollen and their number decreased in grana. Finally, needle-shaped crystalline concretions made of Ca and P, with Zn content, were formed in the apoplast of the plants. The stratagems of V. faba L. undergoing high concentrations of toxic metals in carbonate substrate, suggest root cell wall thickening to decrease uptake of toxic metals, a possible control of metal transport from roots to leaves by synthesizing phytochelators–toxic metal complexes, and finally a control of exceeded Ca and metal concentration in leaves by crystal P formation as ultimate response to stress defense. The geochemical factors influencing metal availability, guaranty a reduction of metal content in plant growing on mixed tailing/soil substrate as far as carbonate are not completely dissolved.  相似文献

Arabidopsis thaliana has been widely used as a model plant to study acyl lipid metabolism. Seeds of A. thaliana are quite small (approximately 500 × 300 μm and weigh ~ 20 μg), making lipid compositional analyses of single seeds difficult to achieve. Here we have used matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization-mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI) to map and visualize the three-dimensional spatial distributions of two common membrane phospholipid classes, phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylinositol (PI), in single A. thaliana seeds. The 3D images revealed distinct differences in distribution of several molecular species of both phospholipids among different seed tissues. Using data from these 3D reconstructions, the PC and PI mol% lipid profiles were calculated for the embryonic axis, cotyledons, and peripheral endosperm, and these data agreed well with overall quantification of these lipids in bulk seed extracts analyzed by conventional electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). In addition, MALDI-MSI was used to profile PC and PI molecular species in seeds of wild type, fad2–1, fad3–2, fad6–1, and fae1–1 acyl lipid mutants. The resulting distributions revealed previously unobserved changes in spatial distribution of several lipid molecular species, and were used to suggest new insights into biochemical heterogeneity of seed lipid metabolism. These studies highlight the value of mass spectrometry imaging to provide unprecedented spatial and chemical resolution of metabolites directly in samples even as small as a single A. thaliana seeds, and allow for expanded imaging of plant metabolites to improve our understanding of plant lipid metabolism from a spatial perspective.  相似文献

We compared daily visitation frequency indices by 4 large (> 150 g), 7 medium-size (50–150 g), 5 small (30–50 g) and 8 and tiny (< 30 g) frugivorous bird species on fleshy fruits of two native shrubs (Olea europaea subsp. africana and Chrysanthemoides monilifera subsp. monilifera), two established alien shrubs (Solanum mauritianum and Lantana camara) and two emerging alien shrubs (Myoporum tenuifolium and Pittosporum undulatum) at nine different sites in the Cape Floristic Region. Large, medium-size and tiny birds as groups displayed significantly higher visitation frequency indices on fruits of both emerging alien shrub species than the other shrub species. Small birds as a group displayed insignificantly different visitation frequency indices on fruits of both emerging and established alien shrub species but significantly higher visitation frequency indices on fruits of both emerging and established alien shrub species than on fruits of the native shrub species. However, there were significant differences in foraging frequency indices of the bird species included within each of these body size groups on fruits of the different shrub species. Among the large birds, Columba guinea and among the medium size birds Sturnus vulgaris, Streptopelia senegalensis, Turdus olivaceus and Onychognathus morio all exhibited significantly higher visitation frequency indices on fruits of both emerging alien shrub species than on fruits of the other shrub species. These findings indicate that alien plant control measures should be focused on eradicating localised populations of emerging aliens to limit preferential consumption of their fruits by birds and consequent dispersal of their seeds that germinate readily into natural areas.  相似文献

Climate change factors interact to modify plant growth and development. The objective of this study was to evaluate the response to temperature of big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman) development, growth, reproduction and biomass partitioning under low and high carbon dioxide concentrations ([CO2]) grown in controlled environmental conditions. Ten sunlit soil–plant–atmosphere-research (SPAR) chambers were used to study the effects of two [CO2] of low (360 μL L−1) and high (720 μL L−1), and five different day/night temperatures of 20/12, 25/17, 30/22, 35/27 and 40/32 °C. Big bluestem cv. Bonelli seeds were sown in pure, fine sand, in 11 rows at equal spacing and after emergence were thinned to 10 plants per row. At maturity, individual plants were harvested and divided into leaves, stems, panicles and roots. Biomass decreased either above or below the optimum temperature of 30/22 °C. The effect of high [CO2] on biomass accumulation (12–30% increase) was visible at less than optimum temperature (30/22 °C) and absent at two high temperatures. With increase in temperature, irrespective of the [CO2], biomass partitioned to leaves increased (35%) where as that to stems decreased (33%). Panicle weight was 6–7% of biomass at 25/17 °C and fell to 1.6% at 40/32 °C. The biomass partitioned to roots, across the temperatures, was constant for plants grown at low [CO2] but decreased by 7% for those grown at high [CO2]. The decrease in panicle/seed production at two high temperatures (>30/22 °C) might reduce this species population and dominance in tallgrass prairies. The temperature response functions at different [CO2] will be useful to improve the predictive capabilities of dynamic global vegetation models in simulating dynamics of rangelands, where big bluestem is the dominant species.  相似文献

The impacts of salt stress and inoculation in in vitro grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) growth, nutrient accumulation, osmoregulation, photosynthesis and membrane integrity were evaluated. One month exposure to 100 mM NaCl as well as to inoculation with Phaeomoniella chlamydospora reduced relative growth rate (RGR) and induced senescence in grapevine plants, shown by: (1) decrease of Ψπ without osmoregulation, (2) decrease of chlorophyll content and fluorescence, (3) loss of membrane integrity and (4) nutritional disorders. To assess putative changes in structural and/or non-structural carbohydrates induced by these two stress conditions, alcohol insoluble residues from the roots, stems and leaves were also characterised by FT-IR and GC with respect to the sugar composition. The referred organs were distinguished based on: (1) higher proportion of uronic acid residues in leaves which diagnose the presence of pectic polysaccharides (wavenumbers 1100, 1150 and 1018 cm?1 in FT-IR spectra), (2) higher proportion of xylose and glucose on stems and FT-IR spectra diagnostic of xylose-rich polysaccharides (1041 cm?1) and cellulose (1060 cm?1), (3) higher proportion of glucose residues, xylose and arabinose on roots and a FT-IR spectra characteristic of xylose-rich polysaccharides (1041 cm?1). The main alterations induced by salt stress and inoculation were more visible in leaves, where the content of uronic acid decreased showing that changes in cell wall composition occurred, mostly at the pectic fraction. Besides, an accumulation of insoluble glucose was found, and FT-IR spectra showed that this glucose-based material was starch (maximum absorption at 998 cm?1), accumulated as a non-specific response to salt stress and P. chlamydospora inoculation.  相似文献

It has been known for a few decades that European rabbits consume seeds and fleshy fruits of native woody plants, but relevant factors in the endozoochory processes such as seed predation (chewing and digestion), sexual differentiation, or the temporal pattern of seed recovery have been little evaluated until now. In this study, we examined seed dispersal of three Mediterranean shrub species by wild rabbits through monitoring of seed retrieval and germination after gut passage. Twelve adult wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus; six males and six females) of similar size and age were fed seeds of three shrub species with fleshy fruits (Crataegus monogyna, Myrtus communis and Pistacia lentiscus). After ingestion of fruits, seeds were retrieved from dung every 12 h for a day and a half. The viability and germination of retrieved seeds were tested along with that of uneaten seeds. Between 5% and 76% of ingested seeds were retrieved from dung, with significant differences between species and sex. Most M. communis seeds were retrieved with 12–24 h after ingestion; almost all C. monogyna seeds were recovered with 0–12 h after ingestion; no seeds of P. lentiscus were recovered. Only in the case of M. communis seed was the recovery rate greater in female than in male. Passage through the rabbit gut significantly increased seed germination in M. communis, and decreased it in C. monogyna. In conclusion, wild rabbits acted in this study as predators of C. monogyna and P. lentiscus seeds and potential dispersers of M. communis seeds.  相似文献

Alterations of plant growth, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, nodule carbon metabolism and polyols concentration as result of salt stress were examined in alfalfa (Medicago sativa). Plants, in symbiosis with Sinorhizobium meliloti GR4 strain, were grown under controlled conditions for 35 days (DAS) and subjected to 150 mM of NaCl stress. Plant biomass (PDW) and nitrogen fixation rate (NFR) were markedly affected by salt stress conditions; the highest reductions of PDW (50%) and NFR (40%) were registered at 84 DAS and 56 DAS, respectively. In addition, salinity affected the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, decreased initial chlorophyll fluorescence (F0) and increased the optimum quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm ratio). The enzyme activities sucrose synthase activity and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase, responsible for the carbon supply to the bacteroids by the formation of dicarboxylates, were drastically inhibited by salinity, mainly at 56 DAS with the beginning of flowering. The content of total soluble sugars and proline increased under salt stress, and these concentrations were higher in nodule than in leaf. This last result suggests that the nodule is an organ specially protected in order to maintain its functioning, even under stress conditions. Besides, the content of myoinositol and pinitol in leaves and nodules changed with the plant growth stage and the saline treatment. Under salinity stress, the concentrations of pinitol in nodule were higher than in leaf, which supports the central function of this molecule in the adaptive response of nodules to salt stress. The increase of pinitol synthesis in nodule of M. sativa under salt stress could be one of the adaptive features used by the plant.  相似文献

In contrast to the strawberry fruits, strawberry leaves as a source of bioactive compounds with potentially beneficial biological effects have been largely overlooked. In this study we examined direct, dose-dependent effects of wild strawberry (Fragaria vesca, L.) leaves aqueous extract, in two experimental models and animal species, the isolated guinea pig hearts and rat aortic rings. Vasodilatory potential of the wild strawberry leaves extract was compared with vasodilatory activity of aqueous extract of hawthorn (Crataegus oxycantha, L) leaves with flowers, which can be regarded as a reference plant extract with a marked vasodilatory activity. The extracts were analysed by their “phenolic fingerprints”, total phenolic content and antioxidative capacity. Their vasodilatory activity was determined and compared in the isolated aortic rings from 24 rats that were exposed to the extracts doses of 0.06, 0.6, 6, and 60 mg/100 ml. Both extracts induced similar, dose-dependent vasodilation. Maximal relaxation was 72.2±4.4% and 81.3±4.5%, induced by the strawberry and hawthorn extract, respectively. To determine vasodilatory mechanisms of the wild strawberry leaves extract, endothelium-denuded and intact rings exposed to nitric oxide (NO) synthase inhibitor l-NAME or cyclooxygenase inhibitor indomethacin were used. Removal of the endothelium prevented and exposure to l-NAME or indomethacin strongly diminished the vasodilatatory response to the extract. In the isolated hearts (n=12), the wild strawberry extract was applied at concentrations of 0.06, 0.18, 0.6, and 1.8 mg/100 ml. Each dose was perfused for 3.5 min with 15 min of washout periods. Heart contractility, electrophysiological activity, coronary flow and oxygen consumption were continuously monitored. The extract did not significantly affect heart rate and contractility, main parameters of the cardiac action that determine oxygen demands, while coronary flow increased up to 45% over control value with a simultaneous decrease of oxygen extraction by 34%.The results indicate that the aqueous extract of wild strawberry leaves is a direct, endothelium-dependent vasodilator, action of which is mediated by NO and cyclooxygenase products and which potency is similar to that of the hawthorn aqueous extract.  相似文献

Stipa tenacissima L. (alpha grass) steppes are one of the most representative ecosystems in arid Mediterranean ecosystems. On the one hand these steppes, which are perpetually exposed to climate and strong anthropogenic pressure, have undergone severe degradation. On the other hand, the ability of S. tenacissima to regenerate naturally is significantly reduced. In this study the germination response and seedling emergence of S. tenacissima are examined in relation to the main environmental factors (water stress and temperature) under laboratory-controlled conditions. The main aim of this paper was to investigate the influence of temperature over a temperature range (10 °C–30 °C) and water stress induced by the solutions of polyethylene glycol (PEG)-6000 (0 to − 1.6 MPa) for a period of 30 days, on the germination behavior of S. tenacissima seeds. The results showed that temperatures between 10° and 20 °C seem to be favorable for the germination of this species, with optimum temperatures among accessions found in 20 °C. When seeds were water-stressed, germination severely decreased at − 0.8 MPa, indicating that the accession resistance limits to the water stress, and was completely inhibited at − 1.6 MPa. Consequently, the final germination percentage (FGP) decreased and the mean time germination (MTG) increased. Based on the empirical data of the germination rate, we estimated that the parameters of the thermal time and hydrotime models showed different values in all accessions which proves the difference between accession adaptive capacities.  相似文献

Aloe marlothii flowers during dry winter months (July–September) and produces large numbers of wind dispersed seeds. Fire disturbance in a population of several thousand A. marlothii plants at Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, Gauteng, permitted a series of seed dispersal experiments to be conducted. Germination trials indicated that seedling emergence decreased with increased distance from a well defined aloe stand and burn area margin, with seeds dispersed up to 25 m. Flowering frequency and total seed production were positively correlated with plant height, with seed production estimated to range from 26,000 to 375,000 seeds/plant. Although a large number of seeds are produced by flowering plants the survival rate of seeds did not extend beyond the following flowering season.  相似文献

The extract of Achyranthes japonica was tested for effects on larval survival and development and the oviposition behavior of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L. Chinese cabbage dipped in A. japonica extract solution showed 51–80% antifeedant activity for 5 days against P. xylostella larvae, and more larvae were also on untreated cabbage leaves 24 h after release. The mortality of P. xylostella larvae increased proportionally to the duration of dipping time in the extract, and both pupation and emergence rates of larvae feeding only on treated cabbage were lower than those for larvae raised on untreated or with a choice of cabbage. The 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) concentration in leaves was approximately 549, 1232, 1275, and 1426 μg/g at 6, 12, 24, and 48 h after dipping treatment, respectively. Notably, naive females laid more eggs on untreated cabbage than on treated cabbage, and females from larvae raised on treated Chinese cabbage also preferred the non-treated leaves. Our results are in contrast to those from earlier studies using various insect models that confirmed most females prefer to lay eggs on the host type that was eaten in the larval stage (Hopkins host selection principle). Cabbage dipped in the A. japonica solution for 24 h caused 59% larval mortality and inhibited both pupation and emergence rates of the larvae when exposed to plants 15 and 22 days after planting in the field, with the 20E concentration in the treated cabbage leaves at 1600.9 ± 122.36 and 1386.8 ± 24.69 μg/g, respectively. Therefore, the biological effectiveness could be attributed to the 20E in the treated cabbage leaves.  相似文献

We reported the Australian golden wattle as a copper stabilizer in abandoned copper mine soils earlier. Here we investigate to confirm this plant’s suitability to grow on metal contaminated mine soils based on stress indication. The seeds of Acacia pycnantha collected from mining area were germinated after heat and no heat treatment on two types of irrigation. The daily irrigated and heat treated seeds gave up to 85% germination on sandy soil. The A. pycnantha was grown under greenhouse condition in six different soils collected from abandoned copper mine at Kapunda in South Australia. Among the six soil samples, soil-1 with the highest copper concentration produced 2.05 mmol g−1 tissue of proline. Proline expression was prominent in more saline soils (1, 5 and 6) having electrical conductivity (EC) 1184, 1364 and 1256 μS, respectively. Chlorophyll a, b and carotenoid levels in plants showed a gradually decreasing trend in all the soils as experiment progressed. The plants grown on soil sample-1, containing 4083 ± 103 mg kg−1 of copper resulted in 18 ± 2 mg kg−1 accumulation in its leaf. The calcium accumulation was significant up to 11648 ± 1209 mg kg−1 in leaf. Although pore water samples showed higher Cu concentration in soils, an increased mobility of arsenic and lead was observed in all the soil samples. Our experiment points out the need for proper monitoring of revegetation processes to avoid revegetation and reclamation failure.  相似文献

We studied the germination responses of Arthrocnemum macrostachyum, Juncus acutus and Schoenus nigricans to saline stress caused by different salt types. The germination percentage and mean time to germination data were obtained by incubating seeds for 30 d in 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5% saline solutions of NaCl, MgCl2, MgSO4 and Na2SO4 at 30/20 °C and with a 12 h photoperiod. A. macrostachyum was the most tolerant species to salinity during the germination (65% in 2% NaCl). S. nigricans showed the lowest germination (none germinated in salt and only 26% in distilled water). J. acutus showed intermediate behaviour between the two above species, its germination being inhibited by high salt concentrations. The sulphates had less inhibitory effect than the equivalent chloride concentrations.  相似文献
