The free water-soluble carbohydrates, cytokinins (Cyt), and abscisic acid (ABA) content in the leaves and tillering nodes tissues of winter crops, wheat, rye, and wheat-wheatgrass hybrid (WWG) in connection with their survival in the abnormally warm winters of 2006–2008 was studied. A correlation between the monosaccharide and phytohormone content dynamics and weather conditions, i.e., plant survival, was revealed. Frost resistant winter rye was the least resistant to frequent and long thaws, 50% of which died in the winter 2006/07 and more than 90% of which in the winter 2007/08. The Cyt and monosaccharide level increased in the tissues of wintering organs in the period that preceded mass mortality of the plants. Middle frost resistant wheat and WWG changed their metabolism rate more appropriately in the abnormal warm winters of 2006–2008, which allowed them to survive more successfully in the atypical wintering conditions.  相似文献

Cytokinins are predominantly root-born phytohormones which are distributed in the shoot via the xylem stream. In the hormone message concept they are considered as root signals mediating the transport of the photosynthates to the various sinks of a plant. In this paper the cytokinin relations of Urtica dioica L., the stinging nettle, are described, based on the daily flux from the roots to the shoot. Trans-zeatin-type cytokinins predominate in the various tissues of Urtica (Wagner and Beck, 1993), and accordingly trans-zeatin riboside and trans-zeatin are the forms transported by the xylem sap. The daily time-course of cytokinin concentration in root pressure exudates and in xylem sap collected from a petiole after pressurizing the root bed showed high concentrations in the morning, followed by a substantial drop to a level of 15–30% of the initial concentration which was then maintained during the afternoon. This time-course is interpreted as resulting from continuous synthesis and exudation of cytokinins into the xylem fluid of the roots whose cytokinin concentration is then modified by the dynamics of the transpiration stream. Loading of cytokinins into the xylem sap could be enhanced several times by increasing the flux rate of the xylem stream to the maximal transpiration rate when a maximum export rate was reached. The total daily cytokinin gain by the shoot depended on the nitrogen status of the plant. Roots of Urtica plants grown on a sufficient nitrogen supply had a significantly higher cytokinin content and exuded more cytokinins into the shoot than those of plants raised under nitrogen shortage. A positive correlation was found between the steady rates of cytokinin export measured during the afternoon and the shoot to root-ratios of biomass which, in turn, corresponded to the nitrogen status of the plants.  相似文献

Two novel non-allelic mutants that were unable to fix nitrogen (Fix) were obtained after EMS (ethyl methyl sulfonate) mutagenesis of pea (Pisum sativum L.). Both mutants, SGEFix–1 and SGEFix–2, form two types of nodules: SGEFix–1 forms numerous white and some pink nodules, while mutant SGEFix–2 forms white nodules with a dark pit at the distal end and also some pinkish nodules. Both mutations are monogenic and recessive. In both lines the manifestation of the mutant phenotype is associated with the root genotype. White nodules of SGEFix–1 are characterised by hypertrophied infection threads and infection droplets, mass endocytosis of bacteria, abnormal morphological differentiation of bacteroids, and premature degradation of nodule symbiotic structures. The structure of the pink nodules of SGEFix–1 does not differ from that of the parental line, SGE. White nodules of SGEFix–2 are characterised by “locked” infection threads surrounded with abnormally thick plant cell walls. In these nodules there is no endocytosis of bacteria into host-cell cytoplasm. The pinkish nodules of SGEFix–2 are characterised by virtually undifferentiated bacteroids and premature degradation of nodule tissues. Thus, the novel pea symbiotic genes, sym40 and sym33, identified after complementation analysis in SGEFix–1 and SGEFix–2 lines, respectively, control early nodule developmental stages connected with infection thread formation and function. Plant β-glucosidases catalyze the hydrolysis of glycosidic linkages and play a vital role in defense against pathogens and stress. The present work investigated the relationship between leaf development and β-glucosidase protein content in Olea europea L. (cv. Picual) leaves. The total chlorophyll content increased with leaf age in current-season leaves. Immunoblot analysis revealed that the content of 61 kD protein of β-glucosidase also increased with leaf age, and that the enzyme existed in three isoforms (pI 5.8–6.2). Statistical analysis indicated a strong correlation between chlorophyll and β-glucosidase protein contents.  相似文献

Treatment exposed to light Chlorella vulgaris Beijerinck (Chlorophyceae) with adenine- (BA, Kin, Z) and phenylurea-type (DPU) cytokinins effects positively on alga viability by 1.5- to twofold increase in cell number, chlorophylls, carotenoids, monosaccharides and glycolate content as well as NADH-dependent hydroxypyruvate reducing enzyme activity (NADH-HPR) extensively involved in carbon metabolism. Cytokinins enhance nitrogen assimilation by stimulation of NADH-dependent glutamate dehydrogenase (NADH-GDH) aminating activity finally leading to higher protein level and its secretion as well as polypeptide accumulation in the range of molecular weight 12–195 kDa. In the dark, cytokinins mimic the regulatory effect of light upon algal cell division, metabolite content and stimulate carbon recycling for Calvin cycle reactions by enhancing of light-dependent NADH-HPR activity. The delaying of protein degradation and stimulation of their secretion to environment, triggering polypeptide accumulation and twofold higher NADH-GDH activity catalysing amino acids biosynthesis are observed in the dark-grown microalgae in response to cytokinins. Chlorella vulgaris exhibits sensitivity on cytokinins in the following order of their stimulating properties: DPU > Z > Kin > BA in both light and dark conditions. Understanding of cytokinin role in lower plants under different light conditions could be a step toward the elucidation of the evolution of hormone regulation and their action at molecular level.  相似文献

Exposure of barley plants (Hordeum vulgare L.) to soil flooding for 72 – 120 h led to decrease in the content of the both subunits of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase. The effect was more pronounced on the small subunit. Further, the changes in protein pattern were observed, mainly proteins with molecular masses 30 – 85 kD were down-regulated. Conversion of European heathlands to grassland has been reported as a response to increased nutrient availability, especially of nitrogen; a direct effect upon mycorrhizal colonization has been proposed as an likely explanation. This hypothesis was tested in a random block experiment with four blocks and four replicates on a Danish inland heath, Hjelm Hede. Ammonium nitrate was applied (0, 35, 50 and 70 kg N ha–1 year–1) to a stand of Calluna vulgaris (L.) Hull four times annually for 2 years. Calluna roots were sampled on four occasions in the 2nd year of the nitrogen treatment. The extent of ericoid mycorrhizal colonization was determined by direct observation of the roots using a line-intersection method. The nitrogen content of the current-year shoots of Calluna increased when they were treated with nitrogen. Nitrogen fertilization had no significant effects on ericoid mycorrhizal colonization of Calluna nor on root biomass. The seasonal variation in mycorrhizal colonization of the Calluna roots was highly significant. The spatial variability of mycorrhizal colonization, both in replicated plots and in the two contrasted soil horizons – the mor layer and the bleached sand – within the plots, were considerable. I conclude that heather decline under enhanced nitrogen input is unlikely to be caused by a direct impact on the ericoid mycorrhizae of Calluna. Oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) is one of the most important oilseed crops in temperate climates. Erysiphe cruciferarum is an important disease of oilseed rape and causes crop loss in warmer areas of Europe. The research investigated the effect of nitrogen fertilizer and fungicidal treatment against powdery mildew infection caused by E. cruciferarum of oilseed rape on seed components, including protein, oil, oleic acid, linolenic acid and undesirable substances such as sinapic acid esters (SAE) and glucosinolates (GSL), using near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Five susceptible oilseed rape varieties were employed in this research using four treatment groups: no nitrogen fertilization and no fungicidal treatment (N0–F0); no nitrogen fertilization but fungicidal treatment (N0–F1); and nitrogen fertilization but no fungicidal treatment (N1–F0); nitrogen fertilization and fungicidal treatment (N1–F1). Nitrogen fertilization increased the protein, but lowered the oil content, of the seeds. Fungicidal treatments significantly increased oil contents in all varieties tested, however reduced protein levels in fertilized and non-fertilized plots. The level of linolenic acid did not change significantly in any plots of any treatment combinations; a similar result was observed in the level of oleic acid in most of the genotypes. Nitrogen fertilization increased GSL and SAE levels, whereas fungicidal treatment had no effect. Our findings demonstrated that nitrogen fertilization can markedly influence some quality parameters in oilseed rape; however, the application of fungicides reduced side effects of nitrogen fertilizer and resulted a reduction on GSL, SAE and protein contents but an increase on total oil and oleic acid contents.  相似文献

Wild edible plants form an important constituent of traditional diets in the Himalaya. In the Sikkim Himalaya a total of 190 species have been screened as edible species out of which nearly 47 species come to the market. The present paper deals with nutritive values of 27 most commonly consumed wild edible plants in the Sikkim Himalaya. Of 27 plant species that were analyzed for their nutritive values, 22 were edible for their fruits and five for leaves/shoots. Among different plant parts, generally higher nutrient concentration was recorded for leaves, followed by new shoots and fruits. For different species the crude fiber content ranged between 2.15–39.90%, and the total soluble salts between 4.66–21.00%, and the vitamin C content from 6–286 mg/100 g. The fat content was determined high in the fruits ofCastanopsis hystrix, Machilus edulis, andCinnamomum species, while the protein content was highest inHippophae rhamnoides, Cucumis melo, andEleagnus latifolia. The total carbohydrate content ranged from 32–88% in the fruits of various wild edibles, the reducing sugar from 1.25–12.42%, total sugar from 2.10–25.09%, the lignin content varied from 9.05–39.51%, the hemicellulose between 25.63–55.71% and cellulose content varied from 9.57–33.19% in different species. Among the various macronutrients estimated in the plant samples of different wild edible species, nitrogen was present in highest quantity, followed by potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and sodium. Micronutrients, such as iron, zinc, magnesium, and copper contents were analyzed in different plant parts of various wild edible species. The iron content was higher in leaves and new shoots. The nutritive values of certain wild edible species determined in this study are comparable with various commercial fruits. It is suggested that a few wild edible species need to be grown for commercial cultivation and adopted in the traditional agroforestry systems, which will lead to reduced pressure on them in natural forest stands as well as producing economic benefits for poor farmers.  相似文献

The dynamics of the biomass, primary production, and P/B ratio of floating and attached forms of green filamentous alga Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kütz. was studied for the shallow water littoral area of the Neva Estuary in 2003–2006. The biomass of the floating algae constituted up to 70% of the total biomass, and the primary production reached up to 90% of the total for the depths of 0–1 m from the middle of July to the end of August.  相似文献

Nutrient concentrations in current and 1-year old needles from two Picea abies (L.) Karst and two Pinus sylvestris L. stands in Sweden were determined 8–10, 16–18 and 22–24 years after clear-felling and experimental manipulation of harvesting intensity. On all sites, three levels of harvest intensity had been applied in a randomized block design (n=4); (i) conventional stem-only harvesting, where all logging residues (i.e. tops, branches and needles) were evenly distributed on the ground, (ii) harvesting all above-ground tree parts except needles and (iii) above-ground whole-tree harvesting (no residues left on site). At stand age 8–10 years, nitrogen concentrations in the current year needles in plots where all residues or needles only were retained were higher than in whole-tree harvested plots, whereas concentrations of K, Ca and Mg were lower. The latter response was interpreted as a dilution effect. P:N, K:N, Ca:N, Mg:N, Mn:N and Zn:N were in general higher after whole-tree harvesting treatments than after the treatments where all residues or only needles had been left on site. At stand age 16–18 years, no significant differences in nitrogen concentrations were observed between treatments, but the levels of Ca, Mg and Mn in both current and 1-year-old needles were lower after whole-tree harvesting than after the treatments where logging residues remained on site. By contrast, potassium levels in the foliage were highest in treatments where only the needles were left on site, whereas the lowest levels were observed for treatments where all residues was left. At stand age 22–24 years, the treatment effects had diminished, except for the effects on Ca and K on the southern Norway spruce stand. It is concluded that the nutrient release from logging residues enhances nutrient uptake in trees of the succeeding forest generation, but this effect does not occur simultaneously for all elements. Increased levels of rhizospheric dissolved inorganic carbon have repeatedly been demonstrated to enhance plant growth by up to 80%, although carbon from dark fixation accounts for only 1–3% of total plant carbon gain. This study, therefore, aimed at investigating the effects of bicarbonate on nitrate uptake, assimilation and translocation to shoots. Clonal saplings of poplar (Populus canescens(Ait.) Sm.) and elder (Sambucus nigraL.) were grown hydroponically for 35 days in a nutrient solution containing 0, 0.5 and 1 mM bicarbonate and 2 mM nitrate as the sole nitrogen source at pH 7.0. Net nitrate uptake, root nitrate accumulation and reduction, and export of nitrogenous solutes to shoots were measured after incubating plants with 15N-labelled nitrate for 24 h. Net nitrate uptake increased non-significantly in plant species (19–61% compared to control plants) in response to 1 mM bicarbonate. Root nitrate reduction and nitrogen export to shoots increased by 80 and 95% and 15 and 44% in poplar and elder, respectively. With enhanced root zone bicarbonate, both species also exhibited a marked shift between the main nitrate utilising processes. Poplar plants increasingly utilised nitrate via nitrate reduction (73–88% of net nitrate uptake), whereas the proportions of export (20–9%) and storage in roots (7–3%) declined as plants were exposed to 1 mM external bicarbonate. On the other hand, elder plants exhibited a significant increase of root nitrate reduction (44–66%) and root nitrate accumulation (6–25%). Nitrate translocation to elder shoots decreased from 50 to 8% of net nitrate uptake. The improved supply of nitrogen to shoots did not translate into a significant stimulation of growth, relative growth rates increased by only 16% in poplar saplings and by 7% in elder plants. The increasing need for protein at low cost has created a need to evaluate the biological nitrogen fixing potential of legumes in Cyprus. In field studies which were conducted over the growing years of 1982–3 and 1983–4, legumes which are traditionally grown in the country were evaluated for dry matter and nitrogen yield and biological nitrogen fixation (BNF). The legumes studied were medic (Medicago truncatula Gearth), ochrus vetch (Lathyrus ochrus L.), bitter vetch (Vicia ervilia L.) and faba bean (Vicia faba L. var major) in the first year and in addition chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), woollypod vetch (Vicia dasycarpa Ten.) and tickbean (Vicia faba L. var minor) in the second year. Using the A-value method with barley and oats as reference crops, nitrogen (N) fixed by the various legumes in the first year was 30–50% and from 55–67% of total N yield for the two reference crops, respectively. In the second year the estimates of N fixed ranged from 70 to 80% with similar results obtained for the two reference crops barley and ryegrass. However, in the second year chickpea, which had limited nodulation, fixed only 40% of its N yield. Estimates of nitrogen from the atmosphere (Ndfa) obtained by the difference method (DM) were 10 to 14% lower than those from the A-value method. These results were obtained after correcting for the amount of N derived from the applied fertilizer. The two methods were highly correlated (r=0.98) for estimates of amount of BNF. The rates of N2 fixation of uninoculated legumes which are nodulated by the indigenous populations of Rhizobium in Cyprus are comparable to those of legumes inoculated with selected strains of Rhizobium in other countries. An exception was the amount of N fixed by chickpea. The appearance of the first nodules at late stages of growth may be the reason for the low BNF of this crop.  相似文献

The summer Phaeocystis antarctica bloom increases under-ice phytoplankton biomass in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. The magnitude of mesozooplankton grazing on this bloom is unknown, and determines whether this production is available to the pelagic food web. We measured mesozooplankton abundance and body content of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) during the McMurdo Sound austral summer (2006 and 2006–2007). Abundance varied from 20 to 4,500 ind. m−3 (biomass 0.02–274.0 mg C m−3), with peaks in mid-December and late-January/February. Abundance was higher but total zooplankton biomass lower in our study compared to previous reports. Copepods and the pteropod Limacina helicina dominated the zooplankton in both abundance and biomass. DMSP was detected in all zooplankton groups, with highest concentrations in copepod nauplii and L. helicina (95 and 54 nmol mg−1 body C, respectively). Experiments suggested that L. helicina obtains DMSP by directly grazing on P. antarctica, which often accumulates to high biomass under the summer sea ice in McMurdo Sound.  相似文献

The effect of nitrogen on the cytokinin relations of Urtica dioica, the stinging nettle, has been investigated. The plants were grown in quartz sand and nutrient solutions providing levels of nitrate ranging from 1 to 22 mM. Nitrogen supply did not affect biomass production within the range of 3–15 mM NO 3 - . However, the shoot: root ratio of biomass was significantly higher at 15 mM (standard plants) than at 3 mM (low-nitrogen plants) nitrate supply. The cytokinin patterns of the roots, stems and adult, as well as meristematic leaves of plants grown at these two levels of nitrate supply, were determined by means of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and immunoassays. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) for zeatin riboside, dihydrozeatin riboside, isopentenyladenosine, benzyladenosine and o-hydroxybenzyladenosine enabled the quantification of 17 cytokinins, 13 of which were found in the various tissues of Urtica. trans-Zeatin and its conjugates were the predominant cytokinins in all examined samples. While the free base trans-zeatin and its O-glucoside were the major cytokinins in adult leaves, trans-zeatin riboside was prominent in the other tissues of at least the standard plants. Glucosides of the trans-zeatin type cytokinins were present only in lower amounts. However, considerable amounts of a compound, tentatively identified as cis-zeatin riboside-O-glucoside, were found, particularly in roots and meristematic leaves. Comparatively high amounts of trans-zeatin nucleotide as well as isopentenyladenosine phosphate were also demonstrated in these tissues. Analysis of the root-pressure exudates similarly showed trans-zeatin riboside and, at a lower concentration, trans-zeatin to be the only substantial components. In the low-nitrogen plants, shortage of nitrogen was manifest only in the roots; the nitrogen contents of the shoots did not respond to the nitrogen supply. Likewise, the total content of cytokinins in the shoots of the low-nitrogen plants equaled that of the standard-plant shoots, while it was lower by about 25% in the roots of the low-nitrogen plants. In the latter, the amounts of cytokinins exuded via the root-pressure fluid were also approximately 25% lower. Since the levels of only the trans-zeatin cytokinins in the roots showed a linear correlation with the shoot-to-root ratios, these cytokinins may play an important role in biomass partitioning in Urtica dioica.Abbreviations DHZ dihydrozeatin - ELISA enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay - -G glucoside - HPLC high-performance liquid chromatography - 2iP isopentenyladenine - 2iPA isopentenyladenosine - -N nucleotide (ribotide) - -OG O-glucoside - -R riboside - S/R shoot-to-root (ratio) - Z zeatin This work was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft within the scope of the SFB 137. The squid Loligo forbesii is the only cephalopod species currently targeted by fisheries in the northern NE Atlantic. An active predator, it feeds primarily on fish, crustaceans and cephalopods. During 15 years since the only previous large-scale study of the diet of this species in Scottish waters, there have been substantial changes in marine fish abundances. The present study evaluates sources of variation (temporal, ontogenetic) in diet composition and prey size preferences of L. forbesii, including a comparison of contemporary (July 2006–June 2007) and historical (1990–1992) dietary datasets. Results revealed significant size-related and seasonal variation in diet composition and prey size. Teleost fish of the families Ammodytidae and Gobiidae were eaten by squid of all sampled sizes, although occurrence of gobies was generally more frequent in smaller squids, while Gadidae were eaten more frequently by larger squids. Cannibalism was also more frequent in larger squids. Compared to the 1990–1992 dataset, clupeid fish were less important in the diet of squid in 2006–2007, while the importance of gobies increased, and the size of gobies eaten also increased. The trend in gadoids differed according to the index used: their frequency of occurrence was considerably higher in 2006–2007 than in 1990–1992, but their numerical importance was slightly lower. In general, results provided little evidence that changes in the diet of L. forbesii correspond with changes in fish abundance, at least at the scales at which these are measured.  相似文献

In January 2006, a major cold spell affected Europe, coinciding with an increase of H5N1 influenza virus detected in wild birds, mostly dead mute swans, starting along the River Danube and the Mediterranean coast line. Subsequently H5N1 detections in wild birds were concentrated in central and western parts of Europe, reaching a peak in mid February. We tested the hypothesis that the geographic distribution of these H5N1 infections was modulated by the long-term wintering line, the 0°C isotherm marking the limit beyond which areas are largely unsuitable for wintering waterfowl. Given the particularly cold 2005–2006 European winter, we also considered the satellite-derived contemporary frost conditions. This brought us to select the long-term maximum rather than the mean January 0°C isotherm as the best approximation for the 2005–2006 wintering line. Our analysis shows that H5N1 detection sites were closer to the wintering line than would be expected by chance, even when the geographic distribution of water bird wintering sites was accounted for. We argue that partial frost conditions in water bodies are conducive to bird congregation, and this may have enhanced H5N1 transmission and local spread. Because the environmental virus load also would build up in these hot spots, H5N1 virus may have readily persisted during the spring, at least in cooler areas. We conclude that H5N1 introduction, spread, and persistence in Europe may have been enhanced by the cold 2005–2006 winter.  相似文献

The selenium status and the relationship of whole-blood selenium and plasma homocysteine are reported for healthy human subjects living in Upper Silesia. A total of 1063 individuals (627 male and 436 female) examined for whole-blood selenium were subdivided into six groups according to age; the youngest included adolescents (n=143) aged 10–15 yr, and the oldest were centenarians (n=132). The mean Se content was relatively low (62.5±18.4 μg/L), and it tended to be higher in men (65.9±17.2 μg/L) than in women (57.5±18.9 μg/L). Selenium levels appeared to be age dependent, as the highest values were observed in young and middle-age adults (21–40 yr), whereas they were significantly lower in adolescents and in the elderly. In more than 40% of apparently healthy adults (aged 21–69 yr), the Se concentration was within the range 60–80 μg/L (i.e., below the lower limit of the nutritional adequacy range [80 μg/L]). A significant inverse correlation between whole-blood selenium and plasma total homocysteine was detected in a smaller population sample of middle-aged and elderly persons (n=204).  相似文献

Synopsis Feeding habits, diel periodicity and total daily ingestion, and nitrogen budgets of longfin dace (Agosia chrysogaster) were examined on two occasions when food quality, but not quantity, differed. Agosia chrysogaster was found to be an opportunistic omnivore, consuming primarily insects when the preferred taxon (baetid mayflies) was abundant in the environment, but consuming primarily algae when mayfly abundance was low. Ingestion provided a better measure of diel feeding periodicity than gut fullness; feeding was diurnal on both sample dates, but more markedly so when the primary food was algae. Mean nitrogen content of algal foods was low, and A. chrysogaster apparently compensated for this by increasing its daily ingestion rate when algae were the major food. A reduction in nitrogen content of food during digestion from 4–6% (of dry mass) to less than 1% (in feces) suggested a high assimilation efficiency for nitrogen (nitrogen assimilated/nitrogen consumed = 72–78%). Populations of this abundant and successful cyprinid in Sonoran Desert streams may play an important role in ecosystem nitrogen dynamics. Nitrogen stored in fish biomass comprised 3–6% of the total nitrogen stored in Sycamore Creek, and excretion of ammonia by the fish represented 5–10% of total nitrogen uptake by algae. Such rapid recycling of usable nitrogen to primary producers is significant in this nitrogen limited stream ecosystem.  相似文献

A comparative analysis of IAA and total cytokinin contents at various developmental stages of floral morphogenesis (I–XII) in transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) plants with mutant phenotypes was performed. Disturbances in flower structure were correlated with changes in the content and dynamics of these phytohormones. In plants with the phenotype “wavy corolla”, IAA content increased by three times as compared with control at stage VIII; in plants with the phenotype “longostyly”, IAA content increased gradually from VIII to XII stage and sharply (by nine times) at stage XII. In plants with the phenotype “wavy corolla”, total content of cytokinins was lower than in control at all developmental stages (except for stage I), whereas their dynamics coincided with that in control flowers. In plants with the phenotype “longostyly”, cytokinin content was twice lower than in control at early developmental stages, whereas it oscillated at later stages, approaching to control value at stage XII. It is supposed that differences observed could result from T-DNA insertion into plant own genes, which led to changes in the content and dynamics of phytohormones in developing flowers and production of anomalies in the flower structure.  相似文献
