We studied the zooplankton community structure in a set of 33 interconnected shallow ponds that are restricted to a relatively small area (`De Maten', Genk, Belgium, 200 ha). As the ponds share the same water source, geology and history, and as the ponds are interconnected (reducing chance effects of dispersal with colonisation), differences in zooplankton community structure can be attributed to local biotic and abiotic interactions. We studied zooplankton community, biotic (phytoplankton, macrophyte cover, fish densities, macroinvertebrate densities), abiotic (turbidity, nutrient concentrations, pH, conductivity, iron concentration) and morphometric (depth, area, perimeter) characteristics of the different ponds. Our results indicate that the ponds differ substantially in their zooplankton community structure, and that these differences are strongly related to differences in trophic structure and biotic interactions, in concordance with the theory of alternative equilibria. Ponds in the clear-water state are characterised by large Daphnia species and species associated with the littoral zone, low chlorophyll-a concentrations, low fish densities and high macroinvertebrate densities. Ponds in the turbid-water state are characterised by high abundances of rotifers, cyclopoid copepods and the opposite environmental conditions. Some ponds show an intermediate pattern, with a dominance of small Daphnia species. Our results show that interconnected ponds may differ strongly in zooplankton community composition, and that these differences are related to differences in predation intensity (top-down) and habitat diversity (macrophyte cover).  相似文献

1. The recognition that both local and regional processes act together in shaping local communities makes determining their relative roles in natural communities central to understanding patterns in community structure. 2. We investigated the relative influence of these processes on the phytoplankton communities of a highly interconnected pond system. We sampled the phytoplankton communities of 28 ponds concurrently with 20 local environmental variables. 3. We found that phytoplankton community variation, in terms of both phytoplankton community composition (PCC) and diversity, was only significantly explained by local environmental variables. These were mainly associated with the contrasting clear‐water and turbid ecological states of the shallow ponds studied. Clear‐water conditions favoured only a few taxa, resulting in a significantly lower taxon diversity and richness under these conditions. 4. The failure to explain variation in PCC by a dispersal model based on the water flow between ponds points at very effective species sorting. This is attributed to the high population turn‐over rates and sensitivity to environmental conditions of phytoplankton communities. Some evidence was found, however, that dispersal influences local communities through mass effects between neighbouring ponds. 5. Overall, our results emphasize both the strong selection pressure that components of the food web exert on phytoplankton communities and the high potential of these communities to respond to such environmental change, thereby effectively opposing the homogenizing effects of continuous dispersal.  相似文献

The effect of the Asian grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella Val.) upon the zooplankton in three adjacent experimental ponds (0.139 ha each) was studied for one year. The ponds contained nine species of aquatic macrophytes. Grass carp were stocked into Pond 1 (65 per ha) and Pond 2 (611 per ha) three months after the study was started. At the time of stocking, physichochemical and biological parameters were similar among the ponds.Grass carp did not affect water quality and had little direct or indirect effect upon the zooplankton in the ponds. The abundance and species diversity of zooplankton (number of species, Shannon Index, and Simpson Index) were not significantly different (P < 0.05) between ponds prior to grass carp stocking. After stocking with grass carp, the number of species and species diversity were found to be significantly different (P < 0.05) between Pond 1 (low grass carp stocking rate) and Pond 2 (high grass carp stocking rate). Additionally, significant differences (P < 0.05) in populations between ponds were found for Lecane luna, Monostyla bulla, Lepadella ehrenbergii, Polyarthra sp., and Synchaeta sp. Temporal variation rather than grass carp was probably responsible for those differences. The number of zooplankton per group (Rotifera, Cladocera, and Copepoda) and species diversity were not significantly different (P<0.05) between ponds containing different stocking rates of grass carp.During the study, zooplankton were collected with a shallow-water sampler. No significant differences (P < 0.05) between collections were found for the sampler and a No. 20 mesh nylon zooplankton net.  相似文献

To study the impact of cyprinids on algae, zooplankton and physical and chemical water quality, ten drainable ponds of 0.1 ha (depth 1.3 m) were each divided into two equal parts. One half of each pond was stocked with 0 + cyprinids (bream, carp and roach of 10–15 mm), the other was free of fish. The average biomass of the 0 + fish at draining of the ponds was 466 kg ha–1, to which carp contributed about 80%.The fish and non-fish compartments showed significant differences. In the non-fish compartments the density of Daphnia hyalina was 10–30 ind. l–1 and that of Daphnia magna 2–4 ind. l-–1, whereas in the fish compartments densities were c. 1 ind. l–1. Cyclopoid copepods and Bosmina longirostris, however, showed higher densities in the fish compartments. The composition of algae in the two compartments differed only slightly, but the densities were lower in the non-fish compartments. The significant difference in turbidity was probably caused by resuspension of sediment by carp. No significant difference in nutrient concentration between the compartments was found.  相似文献

Lentic community structure varies across a size gradient of ponds and lakes with physical factors, such as pond drying, and biotic factors, such as fish predation, determining the species assemblage. We studied the effects of pond drying and fish absence on crustacean zooplankton across a gradient of pond sizes in a Texas grassland. We determined the species compositions and size distributions of crustacean zooplankton in 20 temporary and 18 permanent ponds in April after March rains had refilled the ponds. The surface areas of temporary and permanent ponds ranged from <0.01 to 0.21 ha and 0.04 to 13.8 ha, respectively, and temporary ponds were significantly smaller, on average, than permanent ponds. Fish were absent from all temporary ponds and present in all permanent ponds. We detected a difference in the zooplankton species assemblages of the temporary and permanent ponds. Out of 14 total zooplankton taxa that occurred in eight or more ponds, seven taxa were significantly more prevalent in temporary ponds and four taxa were significantly more prevalent in permanent ponds. The sizes of zooplankton in the temporary fishless ponds were greater than those in the permanent ponds with fish present. We concluded that pond size mediated susceptibility to pond drying, and pond drying determined the presence and absence of fish and their secondary trophic-level effect on zooplankton community structure. 1. The creation or severe disturbance of habitat patches is generally followed by a phase of community (re)assembly. After such an event, the trajectory of community assembly in habitat patches may be highly variable because of stochasticity during the dispersal and colonization process. Conversely, assembly patterns may also be deterministic if communities are shaped by prevalent environmental conditions in the habitat patches (species sorting), or by systematic differences in the dispersal capacities of species. 2. In this study, we investigated the pattern of community assembly of zooplankton species in 25 newly created ponds at 13 different sites in Flanders (Belgium). Over a period of three consecutive years, we assessed at what rate and with what frequency species of the regional species pool colonized the newly created ponds. We also studied the development of community structure over time and tested whether the dynamics were consistent across different ponds at the different locations. In addition, we characterized the dynamics of metacommunity features, such as alpha, beta and gamma diversity in clusters of ponds. 3. Even within the first year after their creation, the new ponds were rapidly colonized by a small subset of species from the regional species pool (Daphnia obtusa, Chydorus sphaericus and Simocephalus vetulus). These species dominated the cladoceran assemblages during the subsequent years. Other species in the regional species pools were only sporadically able to colonize ponds. 4. During the entire study period, we observed no significant shifts in species lists or in the occurrences of species among years. The low incidence of the majority of species may be the result of dispersal limitation or the failure of immigrants to establish due to priority effects exerted by the first colonizers. There was, nevertheless, a consistent change in the relative abundance of species, which was most probably mediated by differences in the hatching time among species influencing species composition in the first year. 5. In contrast to expectations, we observed no increase in average alpha diversity (local species richness) and gamma diversity (total richness of entire pond clusters) during the course of the study period. Beta diversity was relatively low from the beginning and remained constant throughout the study period. These deterministic patterns can mainly be attributed to the dominance of the three first colonizing species and the low success rate of other species in colonizing the ponds.  相似文献

Zooplankton samples were collected from 7 borrow-pit ponds during the summer months of 1975 in northern Illinois. Species diversity indices and evenness values were used to characterize the ponds zooplankton community structure. Thirty-one plankton species are reported. Older borrow-pit ponds contained more species and had higher mean densities than did the newer ponds. The number of dominant species reported per pond varied from 1 to 4. Species diversity indices are higher in older ponds, and there was a general tendency for species diversity to increase with pond age. No correlations between physicochemical measurements and the structure of the zooplankton communities were found. Factors possibly governing zooplankton community structure in borrow-pits are speculated upon.  相似文献

Twelve new experimental ponds were constructed identically, filled simultaneously, had similar physical and chemical properties, and were maintained with minimal manipulation. Colonizing zooplankton communities were sampled bi-weekly for one year. Rotifers dominated zooplankton communities in densities, biomass, and species number (47 of 61 observed species were rotifers). Only 14 species were observed in all 12 ponds; 9 were rotifers. Twenty-nine species (26 rotifers) were recorded in <-6 ponds. Species with high vagility exhibited greater viability. Ponds differed in zooplankton community composition throughout the year, due to differences in both vagility and viability among colonizing species.  相似文献

In systems of interconnected ponds or lakes, the dispersal of zooplankton may be mediated by the active population component, with rivulets and overflows functioning as dispersal pathways. Using a landscape-based approach, we modelled the effective geographical distance among a set of interconnected ponds (De Maten, Genk, Belgium) in a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment. The first model (the Landscape Model; LM) corrects for the presence of direct connections among ponds and was based on the existing landscape structure (i.e. network of connecting elements among ponds, travelling distance and direction of the current). A second model (the Flow Rate Model; FRM) also incorporated field data on flow rates in the connecting elements as the driving force for the passive dispersal of the active zooplankton population component. Finally, the third model (the Dispersal Rate Model; DRM) incorporated field data on zooplankton dispersal rates. An analysis of the pattern of genetic differentiation among Daphnia ambigua populations inhabiting 10 ponds in the pond complex reveals that the effective geographical distance as modelled by the flow rate and the dispersal rate model provide a better approximation of the true rates of genetic exchange among populations than mere Euclidean geographical distances or the landscape model that takes into account solely the presence of physical connections.  相似文献

A major question in our understanding of eukaryotic biodiversity is whether small bodied taxa have cosmopolitan distributions or consist of geographically localized cryptic taxa. Here, we explore the global phylogeography of the freshwater cladoceran Polyphemus pediculus (Linnaeus, 1761) (Crustacea, Onychopoda) using two mitochondrial genes, cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and 16s ribosomal RNA, and one nuclear marker, 18s ribosomal RNA. The results of neighbour‐joining and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses reveal an exceptionally pronounced genetic structure at both inter‐ and intra‐continental scales. The presence of well‐supported, deeply divergent phylogroups across the Holarctic suggests that P. pediculus represents an assemblage of at least nine, largely allopatric cryptic species. Interestingly, all phylogenetic analyses support the reciprocal paraphyly of Nearctic and Palaearctic clades. Bayesian inference of ancestral distributions suggests that P. pediculus originated in North America or East Asia and that European lineages of Polyphemus were established by subsequent intercontinental dispersal events from North America. Japan and the Russian Far East harbour exceptionally high levels of genetic diversity at both regional and local scales. In contrast, little genetic subdivision is apparent across the formerly glaciated regions of Europe and North America, areas that historical demographic analyses suggest that were recolonized just 5500–24 000 years ago.  相似文献

Zooplankton, benthos and associated physico-chemical conditions were sampled in coal strip-mine ponds in northwestern Colorado from June 1977 to May 1978. Two spoils ponds derived all of their drainage from the coal mine, but differed in age; one pond received only partial drainage from mine spoils; a control pond was located in an adjacent drainage basin. Acid mine drainage was not observed, although total dissolved solids (TDS), nitrate and sulfate values were higher in the spoils ponds than in the control pond. Net zooplankton were less abundant in the spoils ponds, although standing stock of benthos exhibited a progressive decrease from the youngest spoils pond to the control pond. Zooplankton and benthos species diversity values were lower in the ponds affected by mine drainage. Certain groups of zooplankters (Cladocera) and benthos (Trichoptera, Amphipoda, Hydracarina, and Sphaeriidae) were rare or absent in the youngest spoils pond. Percentage Similarity Coefficients indicate that colonization phenomena (age and distance from a source of colonizers) may be responsible, in part, for the faunal differences between ponds, since the higher levels of nitrate, sulfate, and TDS in the spoils ponds were generally within the tolerance range of aquatic organisms.  相似文献

The release of anthropogenic pollution into freshwater ecosystems has largely transformed biodiversity and its geographical distribution patterns globally. However, for many communities including ecologically crucial ones such as zooplankton, it is largely unknown how different communities respond to environmental pollution. Collectively, dispersal and species sorting are two competing processes in determining the structure and geographical distribution of zooplankton communities in running water ecosystems such as rivers. At fine geographical scales, dispersal is usually considered as the dominant factor; however, the relative role of species sorting has not been evaluated well, mainly because significant environmental gradients rarely exist along continuously flowing rivers. The Chaobai River in northern China represents a rare system, where a significant environmental gradient exists at fine scales. Here, we employed high‐throughput sequencing to characterize complex zooplankton communities collected from the Chaobai River, and tested the relative roles of dispersal and species sorting in determining zooplankton community structure along the pollution gradient. Our results showed distinct patterns of zooplankton communities along the environmental gradient, and chemical pollutant‐related factors such as total phosphorus and chlorophyll‐a were identified as the major drivers for the observed patterns. Further partial redundancy analyses showed that species sorting overrode the effect of dispersal to shape local zooplankton community structure. Thus, our results reject the dispersal hypothesis and support the concept that species sorting caused by local pollution can largely determine the zooplankton community structure when significant environmental gradients exist at fine geographical scales in highly polluted running water ecosystems.  相似文献

In temporary pond ecosystems, it is hypothesized that the two dominant structuring forces on zooplankton communities are predation and demographic constraints due to wetland drying. Both of these forces are deterministic processes that act most strongly at opposing ends of a hydroperiod gradient. Our objective was to test how these two processes affect α‐ and β‐diversity of zooplankton communities derived from a diverse temporary pond system. We hypothesized that decreased hydroperiod length and the presence of salamander larvae as predators would decrease β‐diversity and that intermediate hydroperiod communities would have the greatest species richness. Our 1‐year mesocosm experiment (n = 36) consisted of two predation treatments (present/absent) and three hydroperiod treatments (short/medium/long) fully crossed, seeded from the resting egg bank of multiple temporary ponds. In total, we collected 37 species of microcrustacean zooplankton from our mesocosms. A reduction in hydroperiod length resulted in lower α‐diversity, with short‐hydroperiod treatments affected most strongly. Endpoint community dissimilarity (β‐diversity) was greatest in the medium‐hydroperiod treatment with regard to species presence/absence, but was greatest in the long‐hydroperiod treatment when abundances were included. Predation by salamander larvae led to reduced β‐diversity with respect to species presence/absence, but not among abundant species, and had no effect on α‐diversity. Our results suggest that environmental changes that reduce hydroperiod length would result in reduced α‐diversity; however, intermediate hydroperiod length appear to enhance β‐diversity within a group of wetlands.  相似文献

Throughout tropical Australia eulimnetic zooplankton is composed of 7 calanoid copepods, 5 cyclopoid copepods and 12 cladocerans. A further 10 cyclopoids and 9 cladocerans occur as littoral strays, making 43 species in all. Dominants include Diaptomus lumholtzi, Mesocyclops notius, Thermocyclops decipiens, Diaphanosoma excisum, Ceriodaphnia cornuta, and Moina micrura. Momentary species composition averages 1.0 calanoids, 1.3 cyclopoids and 2.0 cladocerans. These assemblages are not only less complex than in temperate Australia, but also are not as rich as in most other tropical regions. The main contributors to these differences are calanoids and cladocerans respectively. Nevertheless, as elsewhere, most zooplankters in tropical Australia are eurytropic, widely distributed and small.  相似文献

Two insecticides, lindane (321 µg l–1) and deltamethrin (13 µg l–1) were employed in a four mesocosm experiment (two ponds of 10 m3 and two of 16 m3) to asses the impact of water pollution by pesticides. Resistance of the different zooplankton species was variable and depended upon both the group and the insecticide concentration. No effect of lindane was observed on macrozooplancton such as Cladocera and Copepoda. In the deltamethrin-treated pond, all species of zooplankton were found dead a day after the treatment. The microzooplankton (Rotifera and copepod nauplii) were highly susceptible to both insecticides. Although the larvae of Chaoborus were present in the ponds after the treatments, their density decreased (less than 1 individual l–1). The elimination of filter-feeding zooplankton by deltamethrin was followed by an increase of the concentration of chlorophyll a in the post-treatment period. Two months later the original zooplankton population recovered, with the addition of a new and dominant species: Ceriodaphnia reticulata.  相似文献

Weekly sampling and simultaneous measurements of temperature, pH, and conductivity were made at three stations in the reedbelt, between 1980–82. 20 cladoceran and 14 copepod species were encountered, of whichCyclops vicinus vicinus was found in the lake for the first time. Of the measured environmental features, temperature showed the greatest seasonal changes; pH and conductivity were less variable. There were, both quantitatively and qualitatively, constant differences between the three stations, although they lay close to each other.  相似文献

We removed the surface-orienting aquatic insects from a fishless pond to determine their predation effects on zooplankton behavior and size structure. A second fishless pond served as the unmanipulated reference system in this two year study. In the reference pond and the treatment pond prior to manipulation, daphnids exhibited pronounced diel vertical migrations. Following the removal of surface-orienting aquatic insects from the treatment pond, daphnid migration changed to a reverse migration strategy that was significantly different from that observed in the reference system. Average daphnid body size increased significantly following predator removal in the treatment system. Our data indicate that predation by aquatic insect predators, such as notonectids and dytiscids, may affect daphnid migration behavior in fishless systems. Vertical migration by daphnids may allow coexistence with surface-orienting insects in ponds that are deep enough to provide a spatial refuge from these predators.  相似文献

We examined the diel vertical migration (DVM) of zooplankton in three lakes of western New York; Lakes Conesus, Lime, and McCargo. In all three lakes, the dipteran predator Chaoborus was a more dramatic migrator than any of the cladocerans or copepods. In contrast, another invertebrate predator, Leptodora, seemed to have the least vertical dispersal. In Conesus Lake, following the evening ascent and upper-water night-positioning of Chaoborus flavicans, Daphnia pulicaria expanded its own vertical range of dispersal thereby decreasing its degree of overlap with Chaoborus. The vertical distribution of Diaptomus sicilis was mostly below that of Daphnia pulicaria, thus reducing possible competition for food resources. Poor oxygen conditions in the lower waters of Lakes Lime and McCargo restricted all zooplankton (except Chaoborus) to an epilimnetic zone where the regions of niche overlap and predation were narrowed. Such annually-induced restrictions on vertical dispersal are probably common features of numerous stratified lakes with hypolimnetic reducing conditions. No fixed pattern of vertical dispersal or migration is likely in lakes where stratification and non-stratification follow each other seasonally. Vertical migration does provide some flexibility in niche separation, but the potential for chaotic behavior in interacting predators and prey may confound simple explanations of DVM.  相似文献
