Sustained swimming performance of juvenile sprat, S. sprattus (29–48 mm s.l.), and herring, C. harengus (46–58 mm) was measured in a laboratory flume over a range of salinities from 18 to 33%0 at water temperatures of 16–19°C. Critical swimming speeds (CSS) of both species, relative to body length, were similar, averaging 10–12 body lengths per second (bl s−1). There was no apparent relationship with salinity.
These swimming speeds are higher than values generally quoted in the literature for sustained swimming of sprat and herring (2–7 bl s−1) and it is concluded that the better performance found in this study was a function of improved fish handling techniques, and of the size of fish used since most other studies have dealt with larger, commercial sized fish.  相似文献

Growth patterns inferred from otolith microstructure analysis were compared between sprat Sprattus sprattus early juveniles (26–42 mm total length, L T) collected in August 2003 in shallow coastal waters of the Kiel Fjord, and sprat recruits (60–95 mm L T) sampled in October during a pelagic trawl survey of the western Baltic Sea. At the end of August, a sudden and very rapid decline in otolith growth was observed in early juveniles but not in sprat recruits. Laboratory results indicated that the early juvenile fish were starving prior to capture. Specifically, when transferred to the laboratory, otolith growth rates immediately increased in fish provided ad libitum food rations, while otolith growth of starved fish continued to decline in the same manner observed prior to field collection. In addition, the vast majority of juvenile sprat had empty stomachs on the sampling day. Given that juveniles and recruits probably experienced similar temperature conditions, the rapid decline in juvenile growth rates presumably resulted from very poor feeding conditions in nearshore waters. Starvation during the early juvenile period has not been documented before, but may, at least in the case of Baltic sprat, comprise a density-dependent mechanism operating in coastal nursery areas in some years.  相似文献

Predation on planktonic fish eggs was examined by stomach content analysis of sprat and herring sampled in a plaice spawning area to the east of the Isle of Man in March 1993. Plankton samples were taken to examine prey selection. The clupeids showed a selection for the later developmental stages of plaice eggs. Plaice eggs had a refuge in size from predation by sprat <80 mm total length which selected smaller non-plaice eggs. However, herring and sprat >80 mm total length showed a strong selection for plaice eggs, presumably due to their large size.  相似文献

An analysis of mass ( M ) and standard length ( L S) data for larval, juvenile and adult sprat ( Sprattus sprattus ; Clupeidae) revealed marked changes in the allometric scaling factor ( b in     ). For sprat <44 mm L S, b was 5·0, whereas in larger juveniles and adults, b was c. 3·4 indicating a relatively protracted metamorphic period for this species.  相似文献

Vertical distribution of eggs and larvae of the Baltic sprat Sprattus sprattus balticus was studied. Diurnal variation was revealed in the distribution of eggs of the first stage of development and larvae with a length of more than 5 mm, which is related to dynamics of spawning and vertical migrations of sprat larvae. Seasonal variation in the distribution of eggs manifested itself in: (1) widening of the range of occurrence from the zone of halocline at the beginning of spawning (winter) to the entire water column in spring-summer and (2) emergence in the surface layer in July of all stages of egg development unlike the presence from May to June mainly of the first stage of development. It is suggested that the ability of early ontogenetic stages of sprat to maintain in the surface layer depended on the extent of development of vertical gradients of density in the thermocline.  相似文献

In recent years, Baltic Sea salmon Salmo salar have suffered high larval mortality (M74) which can be cured by thiamine treatment. Analyses of long term mortality records (1928–1998) from two salmon hatcheries suggest that before the 1970s M74 did not occur, or was less frequent. This indicates that varying M74 did not cause the long-term fluctuations of Baltic salmon catches in this period. The frequency of M74 has been correlated positively to the abundance of the salmon's primary prey, sprat Sprattus sprattus. Sprat, herring Clupea harengus and three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus dominated the diet in both the periods of study, 1959–1962 and 1994–1997. The mean size of consumed sprat was significantly smaller in 1994–1997 compared with 1959–1962. Herring and, to a lesser extent, three-spined stickleback increased in the diet of salmon, while sprat appeared to constitute a smaller part of the diet in 1994–1997. The cause of M74 and the thiamine deficiency involved remains unknown, but is thought to be related to changes in thiamine or thiaminase content in forage fish, winter-feeding of salmon or general changes in the pelagic food web, caused by overfishing or eutrophication.  相似文献

The life history strategy of sandy sprat (whitebait) Hyperlophus vittatus was compared to those of other clupeoids found in the Indo‐Pacific and southern Australia. Hyperlophus vittatus is a small (100 mm, fork‐length, FL) pelagic species that spawns in inshore waters of southern Australia. The average growth rate for larvae (20.1–27.6 mm, total length, TL) inside the Coorong Lagoon was 0.12 mm day−1. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters were k = 1.83 year−1 and L = 78.10 mm and the oldest fish was ∼4 years of age. Males and females attained 50% sexual maturity at 59 and 58 mm FL, respectively, and all individuals were sexually mature at lengths ≥75 mm, at ∼1.5 years of age. Macroscopic gonad staging showed the spawning season extended from October to February (spring and summer) and peaked during November. Mean egg densities were highest between September and November. Females produced batches of pelagic eggs at a mean frequency of 5 days and batch fecundities ranged between 743 and 5600 hydrated oocytes. The life history of H. vittatus is similar to those of larger, iteroparous clupeoids that occur in southern temperate Australian waters, e.g. sardine Sardinops sagax and Australian anchovy Engraulis australis, and dissimilar to those of small tropical clupeoids and the sympatric blue sprat Spratelloides robustus, which is semelparous.  相似文献

Pelagic North Sea whiting Merlangius merlangus preyed upon (pelagic) sprat and sandeel, while demersal whiting preyed upon (demersal) Norway pout and herring. Values of diet breadth were low for both feeding groups using Levin's index. Diet overlaps within layers were low ( D <0·25), while the between layer food overlap was moderate ( D =0·25–0·74) to high ( D >0·74) using Schoener's index. Selection of prey was density dependent. However, prey size also played an important role. The diet of whiting shifted from amphipods and mysids to fish with increasing predator length, and the length of prey consumed increased significantly with length of whiting. The fact that the stomach contents differed between the feeding groups demonstrates the need for a sampling design that includes both pelagic and demersal habitats when trying to quantify the diet of whiting.  相似文献

The ability of juvenile plaice (18–190 mm) to bury in sands varying in grain size from 0.062–2 mm was examined. For fish greater than approximately 30 mm in length the relationship between the proportion of the body covered with sand ( C ), total length ( L , mm) and grain size ( S , mm) can be estimated from the equation: logit C = 3.250 + 0.069 L – 6.771 S . Based on their performance in coarser sediments, fish smaller than approximately 30 mm did not bury as well as expected in the finest sediments (0.062 and 0.125 mm).  相似文献

This paper reports on the studies on growth of juveniles, 20–140 mm in length, of Cynoscion striatus in the sea and in aquaria. The monthly growth of these juveniles in the sea was determined by means of the analysis of length-frequency distributions of 5500 individuals throughout the year. Fish in aquaria were measured and weighed every two weeks, and were fed on known amounts of food. The relationship between the length and the weight of fish, and between the length, width and thickness of the otoliths and the length of fish were calculated and were expressed as exponential functions. On the basis of the analysis of length-frequency distributions and of back calculations it was determined that the formation of the first annulus in the otoliths of juveniles of this species occurs in specimens of 45–100 mm in length and of 1.16–10.0 g in weight. In the majority of the individuals the first annual ring was formed at a size of about 70–80 mm. In juveniles of 79–102 mm, at a temperature of 15–22° C, the maintenance requirement was 0.189 g, and the gross efficiency is 0.310 g of shrimp per gram fish per week. The efficiency of food conversion is high, its value being of 18.8%. The increment in length in these juveniles was 2.01 mm per week and the increment in weight was 0.896 g per week.  相似文献

Craterocephalus sp. nov. showed sexual dimorphism in body shape during the breeding season. Pairing occurred during daylight with a single release of eggs amongst submerged vegetation between sunrise and the early afternoon on the same day. The eggs were demersal, adhesive, spherical (0.87–0.96 mm diameter) and had 12 adhesive filaments (0.5–1.5 mm long) at the animal pole. Approximately 24 oil droplets (0.02–0.08 mm diameter) persisted throughout egg and larval development. Hatching occurred 155–160 h after spawning at 25–27° C.
The yolk-sac larvae were 3.85–3.95 mm notochord length at hatching and began feeding at the surface after absorption of the yolk (3–12 h after hatching). All fin rays were developed in 9.4 mm standard length fry, which moved from midwater to feed on the substrate. Aquarium reared fish first spawned at 30 mm s.L. when 165 days of age.

Spawning behaviour of the blue sprat Spratelloides gracilis was observed at shallow reefs of Kuchierabu‐jima Island, southern Japan. The fish carried out promiscuous spawning behaviour on substrata covered with algal mats mainly in the intertidal region of a shallow inlet. The population parameters (morphometrics, population size and biomass) were determined for leopard and angulate tortoises in the Thicket Biome, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Leopard tortoises had a mean total length of 306.47mm (SD = 94.65mm, range 59–496mm, n = 89). Males were smaller (mean total length 277.31mm, SD = 71.85mm, range 73–377mm, n = 36) than females (mean total length = 332.33mm, SD = 97.64mm, range 59–496mm, n = 53). Angulate tortoises had a mean total length of 155.17mm (SD = 33.89mm, range 59–194mm, n = 18). Males were larger (mean total length = 186mm, SD = 8.40mm, range 174–194mm, n = 5) than females (mean total length = 143.31mm, SD = 32.48mm, range 59–178mm, n = 13). The estimated population density for leopard tortoises was 0.85 tortoises ha−1 with an estimated biomass of 6.02kg −1. Angulate tortoise population density was estimated at 0.12 tortoises ha−1 with a mean biomass of 0.06kg ha−1. The possible consequences of this high density and biomass are discussed.  相似文献

植物根序和径级不仅反映细根的形态结构, 而且能反映根系的一些生理特征, 如细根寿命和周转等。该文以二年生油松(Pinus tabulaeformis)幼苗根系为研究对象, 系统比较了根序分类方法和径级分类方法在描述根系特征上的优缺点, 探索了两者之间的内在联系。结果表明: 二年生油松幼苗最多可包括6级根序, 直径的变化范围为0.169-3.877 mm。按根序划分, I-VI级根序的总根长和总根表面积主要集中在前3级根序, 这3级根序的根占总根长的78.77%和总根表面积的62.72%。前3级根序的比根长是后3级根序比根长的1.3-3.0倍, 比根面积是后3级比根面积的1.0-1.5倍。按常用的径级(以0.5、1.0、1.5和2.0 mm为阈值)划分方法, 油松幼苗大部分根系直径≤1.5 mm, 此区间细根的根长和根表面积占总根长的93.76%和总根表面积的84.35%。直径≤1.5 mm的细根平均比根长是>1.5 mm细根比根长的3-7倍, 比根面积的1.5-3.0倍。由于油松根序和径级之间有显著的指数关系, 依据径级最大程度反映根序的原则, 提出了新的径级划分方法, 即以0.4、0.8、1.3和2.0 mm为阈值对油松幼苗根系径级重新进行划分。此时, 上述区间可分别包括I级、II级、III级、IV级、V级根序中根尖数的93.22%、86.37%、75.96%、70.47%和76.67%。同时也可分别涵盖各径级根长的89.34%-70.83%、根面积的86.01%-76.12%以及体积的87.73%-76.12%。此时, 根系不同径级与根序之间可以建立起良好的对应关系。这些结果表明, 通过合理划分径级区间可以较好地反映根序 特征。  相似文献

The hatching dates of Encrasicholina punctifer and Engraulis japonicus larvae collected in the coastal waters off Tanshui River Estuary during the fishing seasons of 1992 and 1993 indicated that these two anchovies had protracted spawning seasons, which resulted in multiple recruitment cohorts. Encrasicholina punctifer larvae recruited to the estuary from October to March, while the majority of E. japonicus larvae came in March-May and to a lesser extent in October and November. The E. punctifer larvae on arrival to the estuary were 17·4–35·6 mm in length, 167ndash;89 days old and had growth rates of 0·4–1·0 mm day−1, E. japonicus larvae were 12·1–32·7 mm in length, 19–62 days old and had growth rates of 0·7–0·9 mm day−1. Growth rates were significantly different among cohorts and positively correlated to water temperature.  相似文献

Examination of the diet of Lates calcarifer , based on 3684 specimens of 4–1200 mm total length (T.L.), from two localities in north Australia showed it is an opportunistic predator with an ontogenetic progression in its diet from microcrustacea to macrocrustacea to fish. The increasing importance of fish in the diet of L. calcarifer in salt water (up to 87% of food consumed) involved a dietary shift from feeding on bottom-dwelling forms to pelagic forms. There were few differences in the diet of L. calcarifer between the two localities. Cannibalism was rarely encountered in the Gulf of Carpentaria although it was significant (11–4% of the diet of L. calcarifer of 1001–1200 mm T.L.) in Van Diemen Gulf. A significant correlation between predator and prey length was found for Ariidae, Dorosomidae, Engraulidae, L. calcarifer , Mugilidae and Polynemidae. The maximum prey/predator length ratio observed was 0–61 for the dorosomid, Nematolosa erebi.  相似文献

The eel genus Histiobranchus Gill occurs benthopelagically over the continental rise and abyss of the World Ocean, primarily beneath temperate and subpolar surface waters. Its generic status within the subfamily Synaphobranchinae is confirmed by comparison of the structure and topography of its cephalic sensory system and skeletal features with Synaphobranchus. At least three species of Histiobranchus are recognized: H. bathybius (panoceanic), H. bruuni (Tasman Sea and waters south-east of New Zealand) and H. australis (two geographical forms; South Atlantic and south-western Indian Ocean, and South Indo-West Pacific Oceans). Collections totalling 319 specimens of H. bathybius from the eastern North Atlantic (1790–5440 m depth) yielded a size range of 99–1370 mm total length ( L T), with no apparent sexual dimorphism. Length–frequency distributions indicate a mode of juvenile fish at around 100–200 mm L T and a further two around 600–700 and 1300–1400 mm L T among adults. Generally smaller fish occur in shallower regions, although the size range is broad over the whole depth range. No apparent trend occurs in the size distribution with latitude over the range 17–54) N. Females outnumber males (1 male : 1·7 females) and both sexes are largely distinguishable from 300 mm L T. Ripening eggs occur in females from both adult length modes, with running ripe and spent females of very different size indicating iteroparity.  相似文献

Abundance of Barents Sea capelin larvae (6–25 mm) is estimated every summer using samples from a Gulf III sampler. It has been suggested that a MIK net would be more efficient in sampling larvae exceeding 18–20 mm in length. On this basis the length distributions of larval capelin captured by Gulf III, MIK, and MOCNESS in six consecutive hauls were compared. The catches taken by Gulf III and MIK nets had similar length distributions whereas the MOCNESS captured smaller larvae than the other samplers. There would thus be no gain in replacing the Gulf III with the MIK for estimating abundance of larval capelin smaller than 25 mm.  相似文献

The present study indicated significant post mortem decreases in length for four Australian teleost species from temperate to tropical habitats: black bream Acanthopagrus butcheri , King George whiting Sillaginodes punctata , summer whiting Sillago ciliata and redthroat emperor Lethrinus miniatus . Shrinkage averaged 5·0 mm after 24 h (range 0–10 mm) for A. butcheri , 4 mm (0–8 mm) for S. punctata , 2·2 mm (0·7–3·7 mm) for S. ciliata and 5·4 mm (−2·5–15·0 mm) for L. miniatus . For A. butcheri held under three different post mortem treatments, the mean length of fish in all treatments decreased but there was no significant effect of treatment type on the extent of shrinkage. The rate of shrinkage of S. ciliata varied with treatment, but the ultimate extent did not. For A. butcheri shrinkage was most rapid (2·5 mm h−1) between 1 and 2 h postcapture. The results from these studies confirm that a post mortem decrease in length is a common phenomenon, even in fishes that are not frozen or preserved. Such shrinkage has implications for the enforcement of minimum legal length legislation, and may cause bias in biological investigations, including growth estimates from tag and recapture studies.  相似文献

Sex-related differences in growth status was demonstrated in eels Anguilla anguilla reared indoors at 17, 20 or 26° C, from the elver stage. Growth status was defined as length increase, weight increase and length–weight relationship. Eels attaining at least 10 g body weight (180–220 mm body length) were tagged with Passive Integrated Transponders (PIT). Length and weight were measured at 6-week intervals, until individuals stopped growing or had attained 150 g weight (380–450 mm). Sex-specific data from potentially undifferentiated eels were provided by retrospective classification of sex. Comparisions between sexes were made within groups graded by length or weight data from the beginning of each 6-week period. There was no consistent difference in absolute length increase between small males and females, but below 40–60 g initial body weight, males displayed on average a higher weight increase than females. Males also had lower length at weight than females, even in the smallest weight groups. Early growth status may influence the future sex of undifferentiated eels, but other approaches are needed for distinction between cause and effect.  相似文献
