Synopsis An estimate of the arithmetic mean number of larvalAnisakis simplex per salmon,Salmo salar, in the north Atlantic was obtained from data collected off west Greenland where salmon from both sides of the Atlantic intermingle. An average of 5.34 larvae was found in the body cavity or associated viscera of 771 age 1 salmon representing some 60.8% of the total number of larvae present. LarvalA. simplex were found at all sampling stations throughout the north Atlantic. In most samples prevalence varied only slightly from area to area. The mean numbers of larvae in the body cavity and on associated organs of salmon in samples from North America were significantly different between samples. Comparisons of the mean numbers of larvae with several known variables in the data were, therefore, considered: host's sex, host's sea-age, geographic locality, year and season of capture. There was evidence that the mean number of larvae per host was greater in salmon from Europe than in those from North America, but the data could not be used to providereliable estimates of the mean numbers of larvae from each area because of heterogeneity within areas. Thus the data from west Greenland and from continental home waters could net be used in calculations to determine the percentage composition of North American and European salmon in the Greenland fishery although they supported earlier findings of mixing of salmon stocks off west Greenland. The use of parasitological data in the identification of different Atlantic salmon stocks is discussed. 相似文献

Synopsis Analysis of variance on mean dimensions of samples of larval Anisakis simplex from Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus harengus) indicated that highly significant morphometric differences existed. Subsequent analyses were simplified by using only the total body length of the larvae which was easily measured. Also the multiple range tests indicated that length showed the highest degree of heterogeneity. No difference (P > 0.2) was detected in the lengths of larvae from male and female salmon and most analyses suggested there was no change in length of the larvae with an increase in age of the host. There was, however, significant heterogeneity in the length of larvae in salmon which had spent more than one winter at sea and this heterogeneity was related in some way to the geographic localities in which the samples were taken. Possible reasons for these differences and the use of morphometric variants of Anisakis as a biological indicator are discussed. 相似文献

Understanding diet‐ and environmentally induced physiological changes in fish larvae is a major goal for the aquaculture industry. Proteomic analysis of whole fish larvae comprising multiple tissues offers considerable potential but is challenging due to the very large dynamic range of protein abundance. To extend the coverage of the larval phase of the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) proteome, we applied a two‐step sequential extraction (SE) method, based on differential protein solubility, using a nondenaturing buffer containing 150 mM NaCl followed by a denaturing buffer containing 7 M urea and 2 M thiourea. Extracts prepared using SE and one‐step direct extraction were characterized via label‐free shotgun proteomics using nanoLC‐MS/MS (LTQ‐Orbitrap). SE partitioned the proteins into two fractions of approximately equal amounts, but with very distinct protein composition, leading to identification of ~40% more proteins than direct extraction. This fractionation strategy enabled the most detailed characterization of the salmon larval proteome to date and provides a platform for greater understanding of physiological changes in whole fish larvae. The MS data are available via the ProteomeXchange Consortium PRIDE partner repository, dataset PXD003366. 相似文献

Riverine movements of hatchery-reared Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) upon return as adults 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Synopsis Hatchery-reared Atlantic salmon returning as adults to Maine's Penobscot River drainage basin were tagged with radio transmitters
to permit long-term observation of their movements. Locations of salmon carrying small stomachemplaced transmitters were periodically
determined primarily from an airplane; canoes and road vehicles were also used. Objectives were to determine the patterns,
routes and rates of salmon movement; to assess the effect of dams on the migration; and to compare the behavior of salmon
that had been imprinted as smolts to headwaters with that of salmon released as smolts near the head of tide.
No consistent pattern of salmon movement emerged. Movement was erratic with wandering both up and downstream interspersed
with position holding. A weak seasonal aspect to the movement was detected, with the minimum numbers moving in early September
and the rates and distances of movement decreasing as the season progressed. Salmon often remained at various locations in
the rivers for periods of time before subsequently moving. Salmon were also apparently impeded by dams, as on numerous occasions
they were observed to approach a dam, then move back downstream. Some differences in behavior were found between the salmon
imprinted as smolts to headwaters and those released as smolts at head of tide. Several imprinted salmon homed to a particular
tributary when unimpeded by dams or homed by surmounting a dam, and several moved up to the base of the dam. Few unimprinted
salmon moved up that tributary. The variable behavior and lack of strong upstream movement may be due to the salmon's lack
of genome adapted to the Penobscot River drainage, the scarcity of conspecifics with their possible pheromonal influence,
and the lack of a home stream and concomitant motivation to stimulate unimprinted salmon to progress upstream. 相似文献

Synopsis A total of 314 white suckers (Catostomus commersoni) taken monthly during May to December 1975 and in April and May 1976 from southern Lake Huron, Ontario, Canada, were examined forCapillaria catostomi.Prevalence determined from fresh white suckers (66%) was significantly lower than from frozen white suckers (81%). However, there was no significant difference in prevalence ofC. catostomi in samples taken at monthly intervals; in male and female white suckers; or in the age categories.Mean intensity of infection was not significantly different in fresh (9.6 [± 13.41]) or frozen (10.4 [± 13.11]) white suckers. There was no significant difference in intensities between monthly samples in male and female white suckers or in the age categories. Suckers were infected with 1–172 worms. The percentage of male, female and immature worms did not change with sex or age of host or by month. The frequency distribution showed the parasites were overdispersed.A possible life cycle forC. catostomi involving an oligochaete intermediate host is discussed and an attempt made to explain the almost constant levels of prevalence and intensity. 相似文献

Furunculosis (Aeromonoas salmonicida) is an important disease in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) farming. Vaccination and selective breeding for increased resistance to the disease on the basis of challenge tests of unvaccinated fish are used as complementary prophylactic methods. An important issue is whether genetic predisposition to infection is consistent across vaccinated and unvaccinated fish. Hence, the main objective of this study was to determine the magnitude of the genetic associations (correlations) between resistance to furunculosis in vaccinated and unvaccinated fish, and to estimate the magnitude of the correlation of resistance to furunculosis with resistance to the viral diseases infectious pancreatic necrosis (IPN) and infectious salmon anaemia (ISA). Sub-samples of unvaccinated and vaccinated salmon from 150 full-sib families were subjected to separate cohabitation challenge tests. Substantial genetic variation was found in resistance to furunculosis in both the unvaccinated (heritabilities of 0.51 ± 0.05) and vaccinated (0.39 ± 0.06) fish. However, the genetic correlation between resistance to furunculosis in the two groups was low (0.32 ± 0.13), indicating a weak genetic association between resistance in the two groups. Hence, the current selection strategy on the basis of challenge tests of unvaccinated fish is likely to produce low genetic improvement in resistance to furunculosis under field conditions, where fish are vaccinated with an effective vaccine. Evidence was found of significantly favourable genetic associations of resistance to furunculosis in unvaccinated (but less so for vaccinated) fish with resistance to both IPN and ISA (unvaccinated fish), indicating that vaccination 'mask' genetic associations between resistance to different diseases. 相似文献

Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) is among the most iconic and economically important fish species and was the first member of Salmonidae to have a high‐quality reference genome assembly published. Advances in genomics have become increasingly central to the genetic improvement of farmed Atlantic salmon as well as conservation of wild salmon stocks. The salmon genome has also been pivotal in shaping our understanding of the evolutionary and functional consequences arising from an ancestral whole‐genome duplication event characterising all Salmonidae members. Here, we provide a review of the current status of Atlantic salmon genetics and genomics, focussed on progress made from genome‐wide research aimed at improving aquaculture production and enhancing understanding of salmonid ecology, physiology and evolution. We present our views on the future direction of salmon genomics, including the role of emerging technologies (e.g. genome editing) in elucidating genetic features that underpin functional variation in traits of commercial and evolutionary importance. 相似文献

We assessed the effects of sexual maturity on space use in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) parr as facultative early maturation enables us to work on individuals belonging to the same cohort. We monitored the space use of 40 1-year-old males in natura throughout a breeding season. First, mature individuals covered longer distances (absolute and upstream) and located within broader home ranges than immature parr. Second, sexual maturity also generated a higher interindividual variability in space use. Finally, mature individuals exhibited a higher probability of association with likely breeding sites on average. However, some mature individuals experienced a lower probability than immature individuals, suggesting that the space use of some mature individuals may not be optimal. Moreover, mature parr exploiting a broader home range or covering longer upstream distances had a higher probability of association with likely breeding sites. Covering longer upstream distances may therefore increase the reproductive success of mature parr, while involving higher energetic costs and a greater risk of predation. 相似文献

Synopsis Migration of smolts in the River Piddle, Dorset, was studied over three years in relation to factors that could influence downstream movement. The river originates mostly from groundwater springs, resulting in stable flows and low turbidity except in very rainy weither. Fish were intercepted at the tidal limit in a fixed trap-net, and measurements of water temperature, discharge, turbidity, barometric pressure, rainfall and solar radiation taken nearby. Slightly increased turbidity and discharge following heavy rain initiated major movements during two nights of the total of 55 days studied. At other times large-scale movements rock place during sunny warm afternoons. Both solar radiation and water temperature were correlated with intensity and timing of movement. The pattern of migration is different from that reported on other rivers, reflecting the relatively stable flow regime of the chalkstream. 相似文献

A linkage map of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) reveals an uncommonly large difference in recombination rate between the sexes 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
A genetic linkage map of the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) was constructed, using 54 microsatellites and 473 amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers. The mapping population consisted of two full-sib families within one paternal half-sib family from the Norwegian breeding population. A mapping strategy was developed that facilitated the construction of separate male and female maps, while retaining all the information contributed by the dominant AFLP markers. By using this strategy, we were able to map a significant number of the AFLP markers for which all informative offspring had two heterozygous parents; these markers then served as bridges between the male and female maps. The female map spanned 901 cM and had 33 linkage groups, while the male spanned 103 cM and had 31 linkage groups. Twenty-five linkage groups were common between the two maps. The construction of the genetic map revealed a large difference in recombination rate between females and males. The ratio of female recombination rate vs. male recombination rate was 8.26, the highest ratio reported for any vertebrate. This map constitutes the first linkage map of Atlantic salmon, one of the most important aquaculture species worldwide. 相似文献

The in vitro phagocytosis of Loma salmonae spores by macrophages of Atlantic salmon and two strains of chinook salmon were investigated. Opsonisation of L. salmonae with plasma factors increased uptake by head kidney macrophages. Macrophages of Atlantic salmon, which are resistant to the parasite, had a significantly higher phagocytic index (PI) than those of chinook salmon, a susceptible species. This may indicate a possible mechanism contributing to resistance in Atlantic salmon or that L. salmonae is able to evade or suppress initial binding by macrophages of chinook. Non-specific binding or lectinophagocytosis was also suggested by significantly higher PI of spores from EDTA treated plasma when compared with no plasma or heat treated plasma. In comparison, uptake of Baker's yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae by phagocytes was not significantly different between fish species and strains for all treatments. 相似文献

The transferrin (TF) gene has recently received increased interest in fish given its fitness relevance as a resistance gene against pathogenic bacteria. In this study, we characterized five TF‐linked microsatellites in brown trout (Salmo trutta) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Interestingly, each marker amplified duplicated loci and linkage analysis revealed that the TF gene has most likely experienced a tandem duplication during salmonid evolution. In addition, the amplification of all five markers across a wide range of salmonid species suggests that they may be of general interest for the genetic analysis of the TF gene(s) in this teleost family. 相似文献

Some members of the ABC-transporter superfamily, such as P-glycoprotein and the multidrug resistance associated protein, may confer resistance to the avermectin subclass of macrocyclic lactones. The aim of this study was to examine the presence of ABC transporters in both sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) and its Atlantic salmon host (Salmo salar) using monoclonal antibodies (C219 and JSB-1, with high selectivity for P-gp) and a new polyclonal antibody (SL0525) generated against a putative sea louse ABC transporter. The antibody raised to SL0525 did not react with rat P-gp, suggesting that an ABC transporter, not necessarily P-gp, was isolated. C219 was the only antibody to localize P-gp in all 3 salmon tissues (intestine, kidney and liver). American lobster (Homarus americanus) was used as a reference crustacean for L. salmonis immunostaining reactions and showed positive staining in the hepatopancreatic and intestinal tissues with all 3 antibodies. The L. salmonis showed positive staining in the intestinal epithelial lining with all antibodies. This report represents the first documented evidence for the expression of ABC transporters in L. salmonis, its Atlantic salmon host, and the American lobster. 相似文献

Radiotelemetry was used to investigate the diel activity pattern of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in early and late winter. Fish were active throughout the diel cycle. However, there was significantly less daytime than nighttime movement and movement declined significantly with increasing fork length. Maximizing winter growth rate, through an overall increase in foraging activity, may reduce the risk of starvation in smaller fish. The results of the present study provide evidence that the activity patterns of juvenile salmonids are quite complex and support the suggestion that individual variation in activity patterns are, at least, partially driven by body size. 相似文献

It is well documented that prior residence confers advantagesin
territorial disputes, but its impact on other aspects ofbehavior and fitness
is less understood. We tested how priorresidence influences the subsequent
feeding behavior and growthperformance of dispersing Atlantic salmon fry
(Salmo salar)using experimental manipulations of residence in a
seminaturalstream tank. In replicated trials, groups of seven
"primary"fish were released into the stream tank 3 days ahead of
seven"secondary" fish. Standardized behavioral observations were
madeon each fish over the following 14 days, after which all fishwere
removed and measured. Primaries and secondaries were initiallythe same size
and body condition and exhibited the same degreeof site fidelity. However,
primaries darted higher into thewater column to intercept prey items, fed at
a higher rate, and subsequently grew faster. Larger fish (in terms of body
length)tended to be more dominant, and dominants grew faster than
subordinates. However, there was no difference in dominance between primaries
andsecondaries. These results suggest that the well-documentedadvantage of
early-emerging salmon fry over late-emerging frycannot be completely
attributed to intrinsic differences andthat the advantage is partly mediated
via a prior residenceeffect. Furthermore, prior residents gain foraging
advantageswithout necessarily becoming more dominant. 相似文献
