The effects of eight summer rotation crops on nematode densities and yields of subsequent spring vegetable crops were determined in field studies conducted in north Florida from 1991 to 1993. The crop sequence was as follows: (i) rotation crops during summer 1991; (ii) cover crop of rye (Secale cereale) during winter 1991-92; (iii) ''Lemondrop L'' squash (Cucurbita pepo) during spring 1992; (iv) rotation crops during summer 1992; (v) rye during winter 1992-93; (vi) ''Classic'' eggplant (Solanum melongena) during spring 1993. The eight summer crop rotation treatments were as follows: ''Hale'' castor (Ricinus communis), velvetbean (Mucuna deeringiana), sesame (Sesamum indicum), American jointvetch (Aeschynomene americana), weed fallow, ''SX- 17'' sorghum-sudangrass (Sorghum bicolor x S. sudanense), ''Kirby'' soybean (Glycine max), and ''Clemson Spineless'' okra (Hibiscus esculentus) as a control. Rotations with castor, velvetbean, American jointvetch, and sorghum-sudangrass were most effective in maintaining the lowest population densities of Meloidogyne spp. (a mixture of M. incognita race 1 and M. arenaria race 1), but Paratrichodorus minor built up in the sorghum-sudangrass rotation. Yield of squash was lower (P ≤ 0.05) following sorghum-sudangrass than after any of the other treatments except fallow. Yield of eggplant was greater (P ≤ 0.05) following castor, sesame, or American jointvetch than following okra or fallow. Several of the rotation crops evaluated here may be useful for managing nematodes in the field and for improving yields of subsequent vegetable crops.  相似文献

Mandibular mobility accompanying gape change in Northern and Antarctic minke whales was investigated by manipulating jaws of carcasses, recording jaw movements via digital instruments (inclinometers, accelerometers, and goniometers), and examining osteological and soft tissue movements via computed tomography (CT)-scans. We investigated longitudinal (α) rotation of the mandible and mediolateral displacement at the symphysis (Ω1) and temporomandibular joint (Ω2) as the mouth opened (Δ). Results indicated three phases of jaw opening. In the first phase, as gape increased from zero to 8°, there was slight (<1°) α and Ω rotation. As gape increased between 20 and 30°, the mandibles rotated slightly laterally (Mean 3°), the posterior condyles were slightly medially displaced (Mean 4°), and the anterior ends at the symphysis were laterally displaced (Mean 3°). In the third phase of jaw opening, from 30° to full (≥90°) gape, these motions reversed: mandibles rotated medially (Mean 29°), condyles were laterally displaced (Mean 14°), and symphyseal ends were medially displaced (Mean 1°). Movements were observed during jaw manipulation and analyzed with CT-images that confirmed quantitative inclinometer/accelerometer data, including the unstable intermediate (Phase 2) position. Together these shifting movements maintain a constant distance for adductor muscles stretched between the skull's temporal fossa and mandible's coronoid process. Mandibular rotation enlarges the buccal cavity's volume as much as 36%, likely to improve prey capture in rorqual lunge feeding; it may strengthen and stabilize jaw opening or closure, perhaps via a simple locking or unlocking mechanism. Rotated lips may brace baleen racks during filtration. Mandibular movements may serve a proprioceptive mechanosensory function, perhaps via the symphyseal organ, to guide prey engulfment and water expulsion for filtration.  相似文献

Crop rotation has been practiced for centuries in an effort to improve agricultural yield. However, the directions, magnitudes, and mechanisms of the yield effects of various crop rotations remain poorly understood in many systems. In order to better understand how crop rotation influences cotton yield, we used hierarchical Bayesian models to analyze a large ecoinformatics database consisting of records of commercial cotton crops grown in California''s San Joaquin Valley. We identified several crops that, when grown in a field the year before a cotton crop, were associated with increased or decreased cotton yield. Furthermore, there was a negative association between the effect of the prior year''s crop on June densities of the pest Lygus hesperus and the effect of the prior year''s crop on cotton yield. This suggested that some crops may enhance L. hesperus densities in the surrounding agricultural landscape, because residual L. hesperus populations from the previous year cannot continuously inhabit a focal field and attack a subsequent cotton crop. In addition, we found that cotton yield declined approximately 2.4% for each additional year in which cotton was grown consecutively in a field prior to the focal cotton crop. Because L. hesperus is quite mobile, the effects of crop rotation on L. hesperus would likely not be revealed by small plot experimentation. These results provide an example of how ecoinformatics datasets, which capture the true spatial scale of commercial agriculture, can be used to enhance agricultural productivity.  相似文献

When human observers view dynamic random noise, such as television ''snow'', through a curved or annular aperture, they experience a compelling illusion that the noise is moving smoothly and coherently around the curve (the ''omega effect''). In several series of experiments, we have investigated the conditions under which this effect occurs and the possible mechanisms that might cause it. We contrast the omega effect with ''phi motion'', seen when an object suddenly changes position. Our conclusions are that the visual scene is first segmented into objects before a coherent velocity is assigned to the texture on each object''s surface. The omega effect arises because there are motion mechanisms that deal specifically with object rotation and these interact with pattern mechanisms sensitive to curvature.  相似文献

Under high population densities of Heterodera rostochiensis, control is impossible by one method alone, whether by chemical means, crop rotation, or the use of resistant potato varieties. Integrated control using thiazone (DMTT) in autumn, resistant potato hybrid 61-8/1, or Solanum andigenum cultivars ''Antinema'' and ''Specula'', followed by cereal and clover reduced the population below the detection level in the upper 18-cm on small plots on sandy loam soil.  相似文献

Faster running is not performed with proportional increase in all joint torque/work exertions. Although previous studies have investigated lumbopelvic kinetics for a single velocity, it is unclear whether each lumbopelvic torque should increase for faster running. We examined the relationship between running velocity and lumbopelvic kinetics. We calculated the three-dimensional lumbosacral kinetics of 10 male sprinters during steady-state running on a temporary indoor running track at five target velocities: 3.0 (3.20 ± 0.16), 4.5 (4.38 ± 0.18), 6.0 (5.69 ± 0.47), 7.5 (7.30 ± 0.41), and maximal sprinting (9.27 ± 0.36 m/s). The lumbosacral axial rotation torque increased more markedly (from 0.37 ± 0.06 to 1.99 ± 0.46 Nm/kg) than the extension and lateral flexion torques. The increase in the axial rotation torque was larger above 7.30 m/s. Conversely, the extension and lateral flexion torques plateaued when running velocity increased above 7.30 m/s. Similar results were observed for mechanical work. The results indicate that faster running required larger lumbosacral axial rotation torque. Conversely, the extension and lateral flexion torques were relatively invariant to running velocity above 7 m/s, implying that faster running below 7 m/s might increase the biomechanical loads causing excessive pelvic posterior tilt and excessive pelvic drop which has the potential to cause pain/injury related to lumbopelvic extensors and lateral flexors, whereas these biomechanical loads might not relate with running velocity above 7 m/s.  相似文献

The efficacy of ''Deltapine 90'' cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) in rotation with ''Florunner'' peanut (Arachis hypogaea) for the management of Meloidogyne arenaria was studied for 2 years in a field in southeastern Alabama. In 1985, M. arenaria juvenile populations in plots with cotton were 98% lower than in plots with peanut. Peanut and cotton yields were increased by treatment with aldicarb (3.3 kg a.i./ha in a 20-cm-band) in 1985 but not in 1986. In 1986, peanut yields were highest and M. arenaria juvenile populations in soil were lowest in plots that had cotton the previous year. In 1986, numbers of M. arenaria juveniles in plots with peanut both years were reduced by treatment with aldicarb to levels found in plots with cotton-peanut rotation. The use of aldicarb in peanut following cotton similarly treated reduced the incidence of southern blight (Sclerotium rolfsii). Cotton-peanut is a good rotation for the management of M. arenaria and to increase peanut yields without the use of nematicides.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES--To obtain from house officers who had rotated through general practice in their pre-registration year their views about their experience; and, separately, to compare the overall hours and type of work performed by hospital based and general practice based house officers. DESIGN--Postal questionnaire; and self recording of working hours and duties during four consecutive weeks. SETTING--Inner London teaching hospital and nearby general practice. PARTICIPANTS--28 preregistration house officers in general practice, 1981-91; and 12 preregistration house officers, four each in medicine, surgery, and general practice. RESULTS--26 out of 28 questionnaires were returned (response rate 93%). Twelve respondents were following or thinking of following a career in general practice. Twenty five respondents were satisfied with the clinical and educational aspects of the general practice rotation and would recommend the rotation, and 25 thought four months was about the right length of time in general practice. With regard to hours and type of work performed, hospital based house officers worked on average 55.5 hours a week (excluding on call), with an average of 12.5 hours (22.5%) spent in clinical activities; general practice based house officers worked about 41 hours a week, of which 24 hours (58%) were in clinical activities. House officers in hospital received less than one hour''s specific teaching a week; those in general practice received nearly three hours'' a week. CONCLUSIONS--A preregistration rotation in general practice is a popular alternative to the hospital based rotation. Although this is a limited study, other medical schools should consider introducing general practice options for preregistration house officers.  相似文献

Being able to judge another person''s visuo-spatial perspective is an essential social skill, hence we investigated the generalizability of the involved mechanisms across cultures and genders. Developmental, cross-species, and our own previous research suggest that two different forms of perspective taking can be distinguished, which are subserved by two distinct mechanisms. The simpler form relies on inferring another''s line-of-sight, whereas the more complex form depends on embodied transformation into the other''s orientation in form of a simulated body rotation. Our current results suggest that, in principle, the same basic mechanisms are employed by males and females in both, East-Asian (EA; Chinese) and Western culture. However, we also confirmed the hypothesis that Westerners show an egocentric bias, whereas EAs reveal an other-oriented bias. Furthermore, Westerners were slower overall than EAs and showed stronger gender differences in speed and depth of embodied processing. Our findings substantiate differences and communalities in social cognition mechanisms across genders and two cultures and suggest that cultural evolution or transmission should take gender as a modulating variable into account.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To determine whether the risk of Kaposi''s sarcoma in patients with AIDS is increased by sexual contact with groups from abroad with a high incidence of Kaposi''s sarcoma. DESIGN--Analysis of risk of Kaposi''s sarcoma in patients with AIDS, according to country of origin of their sexual partners. SETTING--United Kingdom. PATIENTS--2830 patients with AIDS reported to the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre and the Communicable Disease (Scotland) Unit up to March 1990, of whom 566 had Kaposi''s sarcoma. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Percentage of patients with AIDS who had Kaposi''s sarcoma. RESULTS--537 of 2291 homosexual or bisexual men (23%) with AIDS had Kaposi''s sarcoma; 10% (14/135) of the men and women who acquired HIV by heterosexual contact had Kaposi''s sarcoma. None of the 316 subjects who acquired HIV through non-sexual routes had Kaposi''s sarcoma. Kaposi''s sarcoma was more common among homosexual men whose likely source of infection included the United States (171/551, 31%) or Africa (9/34, 26%) than among those infected in the United Kingdom (119/625, 19%) (p less than 0.05). CONCLUSION--The data suggest that Kaposi''s sarcoma is caused by a sexually transmissible agent which was introduced into the British homosexual population mainly from the United States [corrected].  相似文献

Rotation of an inclined surface on which Helix is creeping straight upward, such that the axis of the animal is turned at a right angle to its previous position, but in the same plane, leads to negatively geotropic orientation after a measurable latent period or reaction time. The duration of the latent period is a function of the slope of the surface. The magnitude of the standard deviation of the mean latent period is directly proportional to the mean latent period itself, so that the relative variability of response is constant. The dependence of reaction time upon extent of displacement from symmetrical orientation in the gravitational field is found also by tilting the supporting surface, without rotation in the animal''s own plane. On slopes up to 55°, the relation between latent period and the sine of the slope is hyperbolic; above this inclination, the latent period sharply declines. This change in the curve is not affected by the attachment of moderate loads to the snail''s shell (up to 1/3 of its own mass), and is probably a consequence of loss of passive stable equilibrium when rotated. When added loads do not too greatly extend the snail''s anterior musculature, the latent period for the geotropic reaction is decreased, and, proportionately, its σ. These facts are discussed from the standpoint that geotropic excitation in these gasteropods is due to impressed muscle-tensions.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To study prevalence of Turner''s syndrome in Denmark and to assess validity of prenatal diagnosis. DESIGN--Study of data on prenatal and postnatal Turner''s syndrome in Danish Cytogenetic Central Register. SUBJECTS--All registered Turner''s syndrome karyotypes (100 prenatal cases and 215 postnatal cases) during 1970-93. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Prevalence of Turner''s syndrome karyotypes among prenatally tested fetuses and Turner''s syndrome among liveborn infants. RESULTS--Among infant girls, prevalence of Turner''s syndrome was 32/100,000. Among female fetuses tested by amniocentesis, prevalence of Turner''s syndrome karyotypes was 176/100,000 (relative risk of syndrome, 6.74 compared with prevalence among untested pregnancies). Among female fetuses tested by chorion villus sampling, prevalence of syndrome karyotypes was 392/100,000 (relative risk, 16.8). We excluded prenatal tests referred because of results of ultrasound scanning: among fetuses tested by amniocentesis revised relative risk was 5.68, while revised relative risk among fetuses tested by chorion villus sampling was 13.3. For 29 fetuses with prenatal diagnosis of possible Turner''s syndrome, pregnancy was allowed to continue and 24 children were live born. Thirteen of these children were karyotyped postnatally, and diagnosis of Turner''s syndrome had to be revised for eight, seven being normal girls and one boy. This gives tentative predictive value of amniocentesis in diagnosing Turner''s syndrome of between 21% and 67%. There was no significant relation between mother''s age and risk of Turner''s syndrome. CONCLUSIONS--Discrepancy between prenatal and postnatal prevalence of Turner''s syndrome challenges specificity of prenatal examination in diagnosing Turner''s syndrome.  相似文献

In clinical routine, lower limb analysis relies on conventional X-ray (2D view) or computerised tomography (CT) Scan (lying position). However, these methods do not allow 3D analysis in standing position. The aim of this study is to propose a fast and accurate 3D-reconstruction-method based on parametric models and statistical inferences from biplanar X-rays with clinical measurements' (CM) assessment in standing position for a clinical routine use. For the reproducibility study, the 95% CI was under 2.7° for all lower limbs' angular measurements except for tibial torsion, femoral torsion and tibiofemoral rotation ( < 5°). The 95% CI were under 2.5 mm for lower limbs' lengths and 1.5 to 3° for the pelvis' CM. Comparisons between X-rays and CT-scan based 3D shapes in vitro showed mean differences of 1.0 mm (95% CI = 2.4 mm). Comparisons of 2D lower limbs' and 3D pelvis' CM between standing ‘Shifted-Feet’ and ‘Non-Shifted-Feet’ position showed means differences of 0.0 to 1.4°. Significant differences were found only for pelvic obliquity and rotation. The reconstruction time was about 5 min.  相似文献

The effects of no-tillage (NT), conventional tillage (CT), and crop rotation on soybean yield and population dynamics of Heterodera glycines were compared during a 7-year study in a silty clay loam soil with 6% organic matter. Either H. glycines-resistant ''Linford'' soybean or susceptible ''Williams 82'' soybean was rotated with corn and grown on 76-cm-wide rows in both tillage systems. Soybean was planted in 1994, 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000. Yield of Linford was significantly greater than Williams 82 in all years. Soybean yield was affected by tillage in 1999 and 2000. No-tillage production tended to support more reproduction (R = number of eggs at harvest/number of eggs at planting) on both cultivars. The largest R for Williams 82 were in 1998: 58.35 for NT plots and 11.78 for CT plots. For Linford, the largest R were 12.09 for NT plots in 1996, and 3.71 for CT in 1999. When corn was planted, R decreased more in NT. When soybean was planted in years subsequent to 1994, numbers of eggs at harvest (Pf) were greater for Williams 82 NT than for Williams 82 CT or Linford in both tillage systems; however, crop rotation with corn negated these population increases. The soil became suppressive to H. glycines in 1999 and was suppressive in 2000. After the 3 years of continuous soybean, Pf per 250 cm[sup3] soil were 2,870 for Williams 82 NT, 791 for Williams 82 CT, 544 for Linford NT, and 990 for Linford CT in 2000, compared with Pf of 13,100 for Williams 82 NT, 15,000 for Williams CT, 2,360 for Linford NT, and 2,050 for Linford CT in 1994. Describing population dynamics solely on the basis of R was not adequate, but also required independent examination of initial populations following overwintering and Pf after the growing season. Planting soybean either NT or CT in rotation with corn did not result in long-term increases in numbers of H. glycines eggs.  相似文献

巩固和提升森林碳汇,是实现中国“碳中和”目标的重要路径之一。研究总结梳理了近10年来有关中国森林碳储量及其变化的研究文献,一方面在于探明中国森林碳汇现状和潜力以及对实现“碳中和”的贡献,同时分析当前森林碳汇计量与模拟预测研究的差距与不足,更好地支撑国家碳中和实施路径与行动方案。通过整合分析,1999—2018年间中国森林生态系统碳储量年均增长量约(208.0±44.5)TgC/a或(762.0±163.2)TgCO2-eq/a,其中生物质、死有机质和土壤有机碳库的年均增长量分别约为(168.8±42.4)TgC/a、(12.5±8.1)TgC/a和(26.7±10.9)TgC/a。此外,木质林产品和森林之外的其它林木碳储量分别增长(49.0±15.1)TgC/a和(12.0±11.1)TgC/a。预计中国乔木林生物质碳储量年变化量将从1999—2018年间的(145.9±38.3)TgC/a增长至2030—2039年间的(171.9±60.5)TgC/a,到2050—2059年间逐渐下降至(146.9±57.7)TgC/a。2050—2059年间中国森林生态系统碳...  相似文献

Seventy-three consecutive patients with a Q wave in Lead III and aVF in the electrocardiogram were studied. Vectorcardiograms were recorded with the use of the Frank system.In 32 cases the ECG''s were compatible with the diagnosis of an inferior myocardial infarction based on a Q wave in Lead III and/or aVF greater than 0.04 second duration and greater than 25 per cent of the amplitude of the R wave. In this group, there were 16 patients with coronary disease and the VCG confirmed the electrocardiographic diagnosis of an infarction in 14 cases. In 13 of the other 16 cases without history of coronary disease the VCG did not suggest the presence of an infarction.In all 17 cases with questionable electrocardiographic diagnosis of an inferior infarction, and without history of coronary disease, the VCG denied the presence of an infarction. In 18 cases with small Q III or Q aVF the VCG''s were within normal limits. In two cases with normal Q III and Q aVF the VCG''s did not detect the presence of an infarction in both cases.The vectorcardiographic diagnosis of an inferior myocardial infarction was based on the superior orientation (at or above 360 degrees) of the 10, 20, 25 and 30-msec vectors in the frontal plane, superior displacement of the maximum QRS vector and clockwise rotation. In the left sagittal plane the 10, 20, 25 and 30-msec vectors were oriented at or above 180 degrees with the loop rotating counterclockwise.The data presented suggest that vectorcardiography is a useful adjunct to electrocardiography in the diagnosis of an inferior myocardial infarction.  相似文献

Extracellular recordings were made during vestibular stimulation from an in vitro turtle brain stem in which the temporal bones remained attached. Under visual control, microelectrodes were slowly advanced into the vestibular nucleus (VN) while we rotated the brain and searched for a single isolated unit whose spike activity was modulated by the lateral semicircular canals. In some experiments, responses were shown to be due to stimulation of the lateral canals, either by positioning the brains in forward or backward pitch during horizontal rotation or by plugging the vertical canals with wax. VN neurons usually had low spontaneous activity and rectified sinusoidal responses to sinusoidal stimulation. Spike response histograms were averaged from many stimulus cycles and were then fit to a sine function. The fitted phase and amplitude parameters were plotted relative to stimulus frequency and amplitude. The sample of VN cells were quite heterogeneous. Using stimuli at 1 Hz, however, each cell's response phase was weakly correlated with the slope of the plots of response amplitude versus frequency so that a cell could be categorized as sensitive to velocity or acceleration and as sensitive to ipsiversive or contraversive rotation, depending on whether its phase was near −180°, −90°, 0°, or 90°, and whether the gain exceeded 0.4 spikes/s per °/s. The properties of these VN cells suggest that there is substantial complexity in the vestibular responses at this first site of central vestibular processing. The development of inbreeding in rotation breeding schemes, sequentially using artificial insemination (AI) sires over generations, was investigated for a full AI scheme. Asymptotic prediction formulae of inbreeding coefficients were established when the first rotation list of AI sires (possibly related) was in use. Simulated annealing provided the optimal rotation order of sires within this list, when the sires were related. These methods were also used for subsequent rotation lists, needed by the exhaustion of semen stores for the first bulls. Simulation was carried out starting with groups of independent sires, with different sizes. To generate a yearly inbreeding rate substantially lower than 0.05% (considered to be within reach by conventional conservation schemes using frequent replacements), the results obtained showed that the number of sires should be at least 10–15 and that the same sires should be used during at least 50 years. The ultimate objective was to examine the relevance of implementing rotation in breeding schemes on the actual rare French cattle breeds under conservation. The best candidate for such a test was the Villard-de-Lans breed (27 bulls and 73 000 doses for only 340 females) and it turned out to be the best performer with an inbreeding coefficient of only 7.4% after 500 years and five different sire lists. Due to the strong requirements on semen stores and on the stability of population size, actual implementation of this kind of conservation scheme was recommended only in special (''niche'') cattle populations.  相似文献

Background

Previous research has shown that individuals with Alzheimer''s disease (AD) develop visuospatial difficulties that affect their ability to mentally rotate objects. Surprisingly, the existing literature has generally ignored the impact of this mental rotation deficit on the ability of AD patients to recognize faces from different angles. Instead, the devastating loss of the ability to recognize friends and family members in AD has primarily been attributed to memory loss and agnosia in later stages of the disorder. The impact of AD on areas of the brain important for mental rotation should not be overlooked by face processing investigations – even in early stages of the disorder.

Methodology/Principal Findings

This study investigated the sensitivity of face processing in AD, young controls and older non-neurological controls to two changes of the stimuli – a rotation in depth and an inversion. The control groups showed a systematic effect of depth rotation, with errors increasing with the angle of rotation, and with inversion. The majority of the AD group was not impaired when faces were presented upright and no transformation in depth was required, and were most accurate when all faces were presented in frontal views, but accuracy was severely impaired with any rotation or inversion.

Conclusions/Significance

These results suggest that with the onset of AD, mental rotation difficulties arise that affect the ability to recognize faces presented at different angles. The finding that a frontal view is “preferred” by these patients provides a valuable communication strategy for health care workers.  相似文献
