How life uses mirrors Organisms do not use mirrors as a means for self-recognition, but profit from their reflective qualities in difficult environments. In mountains and deserts mirrors can be found as an adaptation to strong ultraviolet or infrared radiation, while nocturnal animals possess reflective tissues behind their retinal cells, thus augmenting their nightsight. In the ocean different groups of animals like fish and cephalopods use the deviation of light for counterillumination in order to camouflage themselves, or for the purpose of precise light emission in order to attract prey or to communicate. The fascinating wealth of ideas has inspired bionical materials that enhance the function of absorbers of sunlight for heating purposes.  相似文献

Size matters The size of organisms has multiple consequences, which must not be ignored in all biological inferences of any function, it may concern the organism itself (functional morphology, physiology, reproductive biology), of its environment (autecology) or but to understand the big game we call evolution.  相似文献
