Disturbances caused by rainfall are common in streams with the impact on stream inhabitants determined by the frequency, intensity, and predictability of the event. Here, we examine the response of winter-emerging Chironomidae (Diptera) to extreme flooding disturbance. In August of 2007, a severe flood impacted southeastern Minnesota, imparting stress on aquatic communities. Chironomid pupal exuviae collections were obtained biweekly from 18 southeast Minnesota streams during the following winter to assess resistance and resilience of winter-active chironomids to flooding. Streams examined were divided into moderate (2.5–10 cm), heavy (10–20 cm), or extreme (20+ cm) rainfall categories with rainfall amounts in each category representing total precipitation during the 3-day storm. Post-flood samples were compared to samples obtained from the same localities during prior winters. Our findings contradict studies of responses by Chironomidae to flooding during warmer-water conditions and show that winter-emerging Chironomidae are resistant to stress imposed by summer spates. Significantly more taxa emerged during winter after flooding as compared to historic collections, and the number of species emerging in winter was positively correlated with rainfall severity, indicating that 15 species responded opportunistically to disturbance. This indicates that winter-active Chironomidae may be resistant to increased severity of summer spates associated with climate change predictions.  相似文献

Seasonal collections of the subtidal horse mussel, Modiolus modiolus, from a depth of 10 m were made at the Isles of Shoals, New Hampshire to assess changes in overall energetic demand, measured as respiration, the maximal activities of rate-limiting enzymes of intermediate metabolism, level of oxidative stress, and the expression of heat shock proteins (HSP). Weighted respiration rates of mussels from winter collections were significantly lower than summer rates but decreased by less than 20%. Specific activities of several rate-limiting enzymes were measured in mussels from the summer and winter collections at the temperature of collection and the reciprocal seasonal temperature (15 and 5 degrees C). Comparisons of these enzyme activities and the protein concentrations of hexokinase and citrate synthase show that a quantitative strategy is used to acclimatize to winter temperatures by these rate-limiting enzymes of intermediate metabolism. The activities and protein concentrations of the antioxidant enzyme, Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD) is seasonally indistinguishable while the concentration of HSP 70 was greater in winter than in summer samples. These results show that mussels seasonally compensate for decreases in temperature by increasing the concentration of rate-limiting metabolic enzymes while maintaining the same level of antioxidant protection in summer and winter consistent with high aerobic metabolism in both winter and summer. Lastly, the significantly greater concentrations of HSP70 in winter samples suggests that protein chaperone functions must be maintained while other seasonal adjustments to cold temperatures are occurring.  相似文献

Disentangling pathways by which nonindigenous species expand and spread regionally remains challenging. Molecular ecology tools are often employed to determine the origins and spread of introduced species, but the complexities of some organisms may be reducing the efficacy of these tools. Some colonial species exhibit complexities by way of chimerism and winter colony regression, which may alter the genetic diversity of populations and mask the connectivity occurring among them. This study uses nuclear microsatellite data and simple GIS‐based modeling to investigate the influence of chimerism and winter regression on the genetic diversity and patterns of genetic population connectivity among colonies of Didemnum vexillum on artificial substrates. Colonies sampled in summer were shown to form a metapopulation, with high levels of admixture, extreme outcrossing, and some substructure. These patterns were consistent within the subsampled winter colonies and with the inclusion of chimeric data. However, allelic richness and diversity were significantly different between winter and summer samples, altering interpretations relating to population connectivity and pelagic larval duration. This study demonstrates the importance of including seasonal sampling and imperative life history traits in genetic studies for clear interpretations and the successful management of introduced species.  相似文献

We conducted DNA metabarcoding (based on the nuclear ITS2 region) to characterize indoor pollen samples (possibly accompanied by other plant fragments) and to discover whether there are seasonal changes in their taxonomic diversity. It was shown that DNA metabarcoding has potential to allow a good discovery of taxonomic diversity. The number of spermatophyte families and genera varied greatly among sampling sites (pooled results per building) and times, between 9–40 and 10–66, respectively. Comparable Shannon's diversity indices equaled 0.33–2.76 and 0.94–3.16. The total number of spermatophyte genera found during the study was 187, of which 43.9, 39.6, 7.5 and 9.1% represented wild, garden/crop and indoor house plants, and non‐domestic fruit or other plant material, respectively. Comparable proportions of individual sequences equaled 77.4, 18.8, 2.7 and 1.1%, respectively. When comparing plant diversities and taxonomic composition among buildings or between seasons, no obvious pattern was detected, except for the second summer, when pollen coming from outdoors was highly dominant and the proportions of likely allergens, birch, grass, alder and mugwort pollen, were very high. The average pairwise values of SørensenChao indices that were used to compare similarities for taxon composition between samples among the samples from the two university buildings, two nurseries and farmhouse equaled 0.514, 0.109, 0.564, 0.865 and 0.867, respectively, while the mean similarity index for all samples was 0.524. Cleaning frequency may strongly contribute to the observed diversity. The discovery of considerable diversities, including pollen coming from outside, in both winter and summer shows that substantial amounts of pollen produced in summer enter buildings and stay there throughout the year.  相似文献

Seasonal selection in a freshwater heterotrophic bacterial community   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The objective of this study was to determine if a seasonal selection could be demonstrated in the heterotrophic component of a freshwater bacterial community. Surface samples were taken at approximately monthly intervals covering an annual seasonal cycle, and counts were made of the numbers of bacteria capable of growing at each of 10 incubation temperatures from 0° to 45°C at 5°C intervals. Evidence for seasonal selection was provided by a 6°C shift in the mean temperature of the counts from the summer sample to the winter sample. The selection was even more evident when the number of organisms capable of growing at 10°C and those capable of growing at 35°C were compared over the seasonal cycle. The counts at these two incubation temperatures varied inversely to each other. Although a negligible number of organisms from a representative summer sample grew at 10°C, 18% of the organisms from a representative winter sample grew at this temperature. The data of this study indicate that, although seasonal selection does occur, the magnitude of that selection is not great enough to permit the growth of bacteria during the coldest month to approach the levels of growth observed during the summer months. However, the selection appears to be adequate to permit significant activity during the spring and fall transition months.  相似文献

Free protoplasts were prepared from the living bark tissue of the trunk of summer and winter black locust trees by enzymic digestion of thin slices of the tissue for 3 hours in a medium containing 2% Onozuka cellulase, 2% Rhozyme pectinase, and 2% Driselase in mannitol solutions using 0.4 molar mannitol for summer tissue and 1.0 molar mannitol for winter tissues. Cleaned suspensions of protoplasts and also thin slices of tissue with cells intact were frozen to temperatures of −10 C, −20 C, −30 C, −40 C and liquid nitrogen in sucrose and balanced salt solutions. Similar suspensions of protoplasts were also subjected to strong osmotic dehydration (plasmorrhysis) in a series of balanced salt solutions of increasing molarity. Tests for survival showed that protoplasts retain the same properties of either extreme susceptibility or extreme resistance to injury by freezing or osmotic dehydration as the cells from which they are prepared. Winter protoplasts showed capability for tolerating freezing to −196 C and plasmorrhysis in 5 molar salt solutions. These results indicate that protoplasts are a valid and useful system for investigating the properties of the protoplasm and surface membranes associated with the seasonal development of extreme hardiness in the cells of woody plants.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to compare a molecular and a microscopic approach to study the planktonic eukaryotic diversity of an oligotrophic lake. Plankton samples from the temperate Lake Stechlin were assessed in winter and summer 2008 by comparison of 18S rRNA gene clone libraries to light microscopic evaluations. For both approaches identical samples were used. There were remarkable differences between the main groups recovered by the contrasting methods. The microscopic analyses showed predominance of autotrophic planktonic organisms, whereas most of them could not be discovered by the molecular method which resulted in a higher diversity of heterotrophic flagellates. The microscopic survey revealed high diversity of Chlorophyta and Cryptophyta as well as the Stramenopiles groups of Bacillariophyceae and Chrysophyceae. The clone libraries, based on full-length 18S rRNA gene sequences, displayed highest diversity of Alveolata belonging to seven different subclades. Notably, Antarctic Dinophyta-related clones were detected. The occurrence of the marine phagotrophic flagellate Telonema was also documented. Comparing the two sampling seasons, rich diversity suggests that flagellates played an important role in late winter (February), however, there is relatively low diversity in summer (August). The newly discovered molecular diversity of planktonic eukaryotes in Stechlin will help to understand the biodiversity patterns in freshwater lakes.  相似文献

While there is literature on excess winter mortality, there are few studies examining the evolution of its trend which may be changing in parallel with global warming. This study aimed to examine the trend in the excess mortality in winter as compared to summer among the older population in a sub-tropical city and to explore its association with extreme weather. We used a retrospective study based on the registered deaths among the older population in Hong Kong during 1976-2010. An Excess Mortality for Winter versus Summer (EMWS) Index was used to quantify the excess number of deaths in winter compared to summer. Multiple linear regressions were used to analyze the trends and its association with extreme weather. Overall, the EMWS Index for ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular diseases, chronic lower respiratory diseases, pneumonia, and other causes were 43.0%, 34.2%, 42.7%, 23.4% and 17.6%, respectively. Significant decline was observed in the EMWS Index for chronic lower respiratory diseases and other causes. The trend in the index for cerebrovascular diseases depended on the age group, with older groups showing a decline but younger groups not showing any trend. Meteorological variables, in terms of extreme weather, were associated with the trends in the EMWS Index. We concluded that shrinking excess winter mortality from cerebrovascular diseases and chronic lower respiratory diseases was found in a sub-tropical city. These trends were associated with extreme weather, which coincided with global warming.  相似文献

Corn plants (Zea mays L. cv Pioneer 3906) were grown in a glass house on control and saline nutrient solutions, in winter and summer. There were two saline treatments, both with osmotic potential = −0.4 megapascal but with different Ca2+/Na+ ratios: 0.03 and 0.73. Root tips and shoot meristems (culm tissue) of 26 day-old plants were analyzed for nucleotides to ascertain if there were correlations between nucleotide pool size and the reduced growth on saline cultures. Several other cell components also were determined. Plants grown in winter were only half as large as those grown in summer mainly because of the lower light intensity and lower temperature. But the relative yield reduction on salt treatment compared to the control was similar in winter and summer. The two different salt treatments caused similar yield reductions. Neither salt treatment affected nucleotide pools in culm tissue, with the possible exception of UDPG in winter. In the case of root tips, salt treatment had little or no effect on nucleotide pool sizes in winter when many already seemed near a critical minimum, but in summer it reduced several pools including ATP, total adenine nucleotide, UTP, total uridine nucleotide, and UDP-glucose. The reductions were greatest on the salt treatment with low Ca2+/Na+. There was no simple correlation between the effects of salt stress on growth and on nucleotide pool size. The nucleotide pools of culm tissue indicated that in some respects this tissue was effectively insulated from the salt stress. Roots that were in direct contact with the saline solution indicated significant reductions in nucleotide pools only in the summer whereas growth was reduced both summer and winter. It is possible that the nucleotide concentrations of root cells in winter were already near a critical minimum so that nucleotide synthesis and growth were tightly linked. Significant reductions in nucleotide pools that would be expected to affect growth were more evident in summer when pools were larger and growth was more rapid. But even where ATP and total adenine nucleotides were reduced, the ratio of ATP:ADP and the adenylate energy charge remained unchanged indicating an active adenylate kinase that had access to most of the adenine nucleotide pools, and possible catabolism of excess AMP.  相似文献

A multi-pond saltern that creates a gradient of salt concentrations has been studied with respect to some characteristics of the resulting environments and their microbial populations. The increase in salt concentration was correlated with increase in diurnal temperature and biomass present and with decrease in oxygen concentrations. Many types of organisms below 15% (w/v) total salts, were found, many of them normal inhabitants of seawater and even freshwater. Most organisms over 15% salts were halophilic. The salt concentrations comprised two ranges, each characterized by different microbial populations. First, between 15 and 30% salts, the populations ofDunaliella increased, reaching large numbers; moderately halophilic eubacteria and some fast-growing halobacteria predominated as heterotrophic microorganisms and, among the first, thePseudomonas-Alteromonas-Alcaligenes group andVibrio were the more abundant taxonomic groups; and gram-positive cocci appeared mainly over 25% salts. Phototrophic bacteria, both oxygenic and anoxygenic, were also found in this range, and among the anoxygenic type,Chromatium species andRodospirillum salexigens were probably predominant. Second, over 30% salts the diversity decreased greatly, all organisms found at the lower salt concentrations disappeared, and instead large populations of halobacteria developed. Fungal communities on decaying culms of a bamboo host (Phyllostachys bambusoides) from freshwater and adjacent terrestrial habitats were identified. Collections were made at Xiao Bai Long Mountain, Yiliang, Yunnan, China in the winter and summer. In each collection, 100 similar-sized bamboo culms were collected, comprising 50 submerged samples from a stream and 50 terrestrial samples from adjacent riparian vegetation. A total of 82 fungal taxa were recorded from the samples, including 30 ascomycetes and 52 anamorphic fungi. The frequency of occurrence of these fungi were recorded and the Shannon–Weiner indices (H′) were applied to evaluate fungal diversity. The results showed that variation of the fungal diversity between the summer and winter collections was insignificant (0.2<p<0.5). Fungal diversity on submerged bamboo however, was significantly higher than that on terrestrial bamboo (p<0.001). Further findings were that: (1) some commonly recorded freshwater and terrestrial taxa were found in both habitats, but overall there were only 15 overlapping species between the two habitats; (2) the dominant species in each habitat were considerably different, and (3) only a few fungi were dominant, while most species were rare, being recorded only once or twice. Factors responsible for the distribution patterns and variations in composition of the fungal communities are discussed.  相似文献

Molecular diversity of halophilic archaea from Ayakekumu salt lake was investigated by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and culture methods. 19 water samples and 15 soil samples were taken from 19 sites within Ayakekumu salt lake in winter and spring. Under aerobic culture conditions, some halophilic microorganisms were isolated by five different media. The 16S rRNA gene sequences of 62 red strains were amplified by using PCR, determined by the DNA sequencer and analyzed through the BLASTn program subsequently. Results revealed that all sequences belonged to six genera grouped within the Halobacteriaceae. Mostly 16S rRNA gene sequences related to the genera Halorubrum (47%) and Natrinema (24%) were detected. Subsequent analysis by using Shannon index indicated that cultured halophilic archaeal diversities are not significantly different between winter and spring samplings in Ayakekumu salt lake. Similarity values of haloarchaeal 16S rRNA gene sequences to known sequences were less than 97%, suggesting the presence of two novel taxa. In addition, taxonomic characteristics of Natrinema altunense and Halobiforma lacisalsi isolated from Ayakekumu salt lake had been described previously. The discovery of the novel species provides new opportunity to further examine the diversity of these halophilic microorganisms in Ayakekumu salt lake.  相似文献

The potential of Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) to spread the parasite Cryptosporidium parvum was investigated by examining parasite prevalence in relation to the structure and movements of three permanent rat populations living on farmland in Warwickshire (UK) from October 1994 to March 1997. One population lived among a group of farm buildings housing cattle, while the other two had no contact with livestock, one living around a pond and its outflowing stream and the other on a rubbish tip. Overall, parasite occurrence was 24% (n = 438), but it varied according to body weight (age) with 40% of juveniles (< or =100 g) infected decreasing to 12% for adults >400 g, suggesting that actively breeding populations are potentially more likely to spread the parasite than non-breeding populations. There was no difference in prevalence between the three populations. The parasite was detected in more males (29%) than females (19%). Seasonally, on the livestock farm, prevalence was significantly lower in autumn (10%), but varied little (31-36%) from winter to summer. In contrast, on the arable farm, prevalence peaked in summer (50%) with a trough in winter (6%). Infection in rats appeared to last <67 days. Rats living on the livestock farm had home ranges largely confined to the cattle sheds, thereby maintaining a potential source of infection for livestock if rodent control was not part of a decontamination program. Equally, rats living around the pond on the arable farm provided a source of oocysts to contaminate the pond water, as well as being able to carry the parasite to nearby farm buildings or even to neighboring farms.  相似文献

Abstract. Winter and summer annuals in the Chihuahuan Desert have been intensively studied in recent years but little is known about the similarities and differences in the dynamics between these two communities. Using 15 yr of census data from permanent quadrats, this paper compared the characteristics and temporal dynamics of these two distinct, spatially co‐existent but temporally segregated communities. Although the total number of summer annual species recorded during our 15 yr of observation was higher than winter annuals, the mean number of species observed each year was higher in the winter community. The winter community exhibited lower temporal variation in total plant abundance and populations of individual species, lower species turnover rate and higher evenness than the summer community. The rank abundances of species in winter were significantly positively correlated for a period of up to 7 yr while in summer significant positive correlations in rank abundance disappeared after 2 to 3 yr. The higher seasonal species diversity (i.e. number of species observed in each season) in winter rather than the overall special pool (over 15 yr) may be responsible for the greater community stability of winter annuals. The difference in long‐term community dynamics between the two communities of annual plants are likely due to the differences in total species pool, life history traits (e.g. seed size), and seasonal climatic regimes.  相似文献

Extreme climatic events are expected to increase in frequency and magnitude as a consequence of global warming. Grasslands cover a large proportion of the European continent and contribute to both agricultural production and ecosystem services through inter and intraspecific genetic variability. This study analysed the effects of summer droughts and heat waves on the persistence and production of perennial forage grasses. Mediterranean and temperate populations of Dactylis glomerata L. and Festuca arundinacea (Schreb.) were compared at both Mediterranean and temperate sites in France. By manipulating canopy temperatures and water availability, grass swards in the field were subjected to cumulative summer and spring water deficits (CSSWD) ranging from 329 to 707 mm to test different projected climatic conditions and extreme summer events. Under controlled summer heat waves (6–21 days at a mean daily canopy temperature higher than 30–35 °C), there was no increase in membrane damage to surviving aerial tissues. Plant stress was thus mainly generated through greater soil water deficit. Under the greatest CSSWD, annual biomass production was reduced on average by 60% and 30% with temperate and Mediterranean populations, respectively. Thresholds for a significant increase in summer tiller mortality were seen at CSSWD higher than 450 mm for temperate populations and 550 mm for Mediterranean populations. The latter displayed lower predawn leaf water potentials in summer and recovered through intense tillering in the subsequent seasons. Under the most extreme CSSWD, fewer than 20% of tillers of temperate populations survived and their nitrogen uptake ability was drastically altered. The higher potential productivity of Mediterranean populations in winter was associated with greater frost sensitivity. The identification of thresholds for vulnerability and the determination of the role of genetic diversity will improve the management of plant resilience and the design of new plant material to cope with climate change.  相似文献

Mycoplasm-like organisms were found in taiga podzolic soils of the South Irtish region. They were detected in close contact with soil bacteria more ofter than in a free state. The mycoplasm-like organisms either were absorbed on the bacterial cell walls or grew inside the cytoplasm as filamentous forms; sometimes they filled the whole inner space of the cells, disrupted the cell wall, and were liberated into the surrounding medium.  相似文献

2004~2006年,分冬夏两季对南京江心洲4种典型生境(居民区、农田区、林区及湿地区)的鸟类资源进行了调查。共记录鸟类67种,隶属10目25科。对冬夏两季不同生境中鸟类群落的密度、现存生物量、多样性指数、均匀度、优势度的对比研究表明,冬季鸟类密度、物种多样性和均匀度均高于夏季,而优势度、现存生物量则夏季高于冬季。在不同生境中,林区鸟类密度、多样性指数最高;居民区优势度最高;均匀度指数冬季林区最高,夏季居民区最高。  相似文献

Cyanobacterial populations detected on buildings by traditional methods are mainly filamentous, whereas direct microscopy shows that they are principally coccoid morphotypes that often cannot be isolated in culture, but may grow on artificial media when the spatial biofilm relationships are maintained. The polyphasic strategy described here was to select morphologically distinct colonies from rehydrated biofilms for direct DNA amplification, allowing uncultured organisms to be sequenced and their morphology to be characterized by microscopy. DNA data banks currently contain many entries for cyanobacteria of unrecorded morphology, which does not facilitate identification, although genetic variability in a population may be assessed. The sequence homologies of the present biofilm organisms (EMBL accession numbers AJ619681 to 619690) with those in DNA databanks were low, indicating differences between xerophytic cyanobacteria on walls and aquatic species comprising the majority in the databases. Further development of databases for the populations found in this environment, subject to temperature extremes, repeated desiccation and high UV and salt levels, is required.  相似文献
