A large number of small saline lakes are distributed throughout Spain. Four main lake districts occur from sea level to 1000 m.a.s.l. Most lakes are temporary because of the arid conditions in the Spanish endorheic areas. Many lakes are situated in Tertiary depressions in NE. and S. Spain. Lake basins were formed in karstic areas by hydrologic and aeolian erosion. Saline lakes in NE. Spain occupy areas isolated between river basins. The major ions encountered in these lakes are usually sodium-chloride and magnesium-sulphate; sodium carbonate or sodium-sulphate rich waters also occur.The biota of Spanish salt lakes is related to that of a larger biogeographical region which includes the Mediterranean countries. The main types of salt lakes in Spain include: (1) temporarily mineralized but not highly saline lakes, salinity is less than 7 g l-1. Chara canescens, C. aspera, Zanichellia palustris, Daphnia atkinsoni, Mixodiaptomus incrassatus and Arctodiaptomus wierzejskii are the most characteristic organisms. (2) Temporary salt lakes, salinity fluctuates between 7 and 300 g l-1. Chara galioides, Lamprothamnion papulosum, Daphnia mediterranea, Arctodiaptomus salinus and Cletocamptus retrogressus are the most common species. (3) Permanent salt lakes, Ruppia maritima, Najas marina and Artemia salina are the characteristic organisms.  相似文献

The distribution of diatom frustules in the surficial sediments of lakes and ombrotrophic peat pools in Atlantic Canada are examined especially in relation to pH and bog lake succession. Sedimentary diatom associations for peat pools, strongly acidic lakes, and weakly acidic lakes are characterized. These associations and the derived diatom-pH calibration functions will facilitate improved paleoecological interpretation of natural ontogenetic pathways and assessments of recent anthropogenic impacts.  相似文献

Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) was used to estimate past salinity and ionic composition in sediments of a paleolake in the southernmost Bolivian Altiplano. Modern diatom assemblages were sampled from the subsurface sediments of 14 saline lagoons, and compared quantitatively with fossil assemblages. Only one application of the method is reported: to a Quaternary outcrop located on the border of one of them (Laguna Ballivian). Multivariate analysis was performed on diatom data to check the range of variation of both the fossil and modern flora. It also allowed a reduced set of explanatory variables for regression analysis. Finally, a number of transformations of the chemical variables was computed prior to the regression process in order to stabilize the residuals variance and obtain a good error estimate. Only ten chemical components were studied, but the method could be applied to other palaoenvironmental parameters.  相似文献

This review summarises the existing literature and outlines the theoretical basis for using standard methods for sampling diatoms from rivers to sample littoral diatoms and other phytobenthos from standing waters. The European Union's Water Framework Directive has created a statutory obligation for EU Member States to monitor macrophytes and phytobenthos in lakes. Although there has been a considerable amount of work using phytobenthos (especially diatoms) to monitor river water quality in Europe, there are fewer studies on the use of phytobenthos for monitoring in lakes. European standard methods for sampling diatoms from rivers should be suitable, with only minor modifications, for sampling littoral diatoms from lakes and other standing water bodies. These recommendations should be applicable to all temperate regions.  相似文献

Six remote high-mountain lakes in SE Switzerland were characterized on the basis of their water chemistry and the composition of their epilithic diatom communities. The index B (Renberg & Hellberg, 1982), calculated by summarizing the relative frequencies of occurrence in all five pH classes defined by Hustedt (1938/39), was found to be well correlated with pH values measured from August to October (5.8 to 7.0). Four lakes with pH values from 6.3 to 6.6 could not be distinguished from one another by means of the index B despite some differences in their physical, chemical and biological characteristics. However, it was possible to separate them by cluster analysis using the relative frequencies of the diatom species. We conclude that much ecological information is lost when applying the pH classification of Hustedt (1938/39).  相似文献

The benthic invertebrates fauna of most of the saline lakes of the Sud Lipez region (Bolivia, Altiplano) has been until now quite unstudied. Samples collected during an extensive survey of 12 lakes and two small inflow rivers allow a first list of the main macroinvertebrates living in these biotopes.The heterogeneous nature of these saline lakes with their freshwater springs and phreatic inflows offers a variety of habitats to macroinvertebrates. The benthic fauna in lakes with salinities > 10 g l–1 is not so low in density but includes few species and is dominated by Orthocladiinae and Podonominae larvae. In contrast, the freshwater springs and inflows are colonized by a diverse fauna, with a mixture of both freshwater and saline taxa, but dominated by Elmidae and Amphipoda. The lakes are quite isolated and, apart from some cosmopolitan organisms, their fauna can be quite distinctive.  相似文献

A synthesis of over 200 diatom‐based paleolimnological records from nonacidified/nonenriched lakes reveals remarkably similar taxon‐specific shifts across the Northern Hemisphere since the 19th century. Our data indicate that these diatom shifts occurred in conjunction with changes in freshwater habitat structure and quality, which, in turn, we link to hemispheric warming trends. Significant increases in the relative abundances of planktonic Cyclotella taxa (P<0.01) were concurrent with sharp declines in both heavily silicified Aulacoseira taxa (P<0.01) and benthic Fragilaria taxa (P<0.01). We demonstrate that this trend is not limited to Arctic and alpine environments, but that lakes at temperate latitudes are now showing similar ecological changes. As expected, the onset of biological responses to warming occurred significantly earlier (P<0.05) in climatically sensitive Arctic regions (median age=ad 1870) compared with temperate regions (median age=ad 1970). In a detailed paleolimnological case study, we report strong relationships (P<0.005) between sedimentary diatom data from Whitefish Bay, Lake of the Woods (Ontario, Canada), and long‐term changes in air temperature and ice‐out records. Other potential environmental factors, such as atmospheric nitrogen deposition, could not explain our observations. These data provide clear evidence that unparalleled warming over the last few decades resulted in substantial increases in the length of the ice‐free period that, similar to 19th century changes in high‐latitude lakes, likely triggered a reorganization of diatom community composition. We show that many nonacidified, nutrient‐poor, freshwater ecosystems throughout the Northern Hemisphere have crossed important climatically induced ecological thresholds. These findings are worrisome, as the ecological changes that we report at both mid‐ and high‐latitude sites have occurred with increases in mean annual air temperature that are less than half of what is projected for these regions over the next half century.  相似文献

In 1994 the atmospheric deposition on three moorland pools in The Netherlands was only one third of its value in 1980. The effects of this reduction on these moorland pool ecosystems were examined by regular sampling of surface water chemistry and diatoms between 1979 and 1994. Moreover, diatom samples taken at irregular intervals between 1916 and 1978 were studied. In the pools Gerritsfles and Achterste Goorven, the median sulphate concentrations in 1994 were only one third of recorded values in 1980. Peak concentrations of sulphate were found after extremely dry summers. In the pool Kliplo, with an initially low concentration of sulphate, there was 16% increase of the concentration over the same period. Ammonium increased significantly in Kliplo and showed large variations in the other pools. Redundancy analysis showed that sulphate was the most important variable for the distribution of diatoms. As a consequence, the abundance of the acidification indicatorEunotia exigua in 1994 was only 25% of its value in 1980 in Achterste Goorven and 14% in Gerritsfles. Peaks ofE. exigua were found after drought periods. In Kliplo no clear change was observed. In 1994 the diatom assemblages of Achterste Goorven were much more similar to those of 1916–1925 than they were in 1980. In Gerritsfles a new situation, without historical analogue, developed. Overall, the large reduction of SOx-deposition had very positive consequences for the diatom assemblages.  相似文献

A helicopter survey was carried out on 56 water bodies in the Abisko mountains, Swedish Lapland, in August 1981. Water chemistry was found to be highly correlated with bedrock quality in the drainage area of the lakes. Low pH values (down to 5.1) appeared in the neighbourhood of sulphuric iron-ores. Natrium and chloride concentrations showed large scale patterns which can be explained by orographic rainfall. Biologically, northern high mountain conditions are reflected in species composition rather than in biomass or possibly in diversity. Small chrysomonades and dinoflagellates, as well as Keratella hiemalis and Cyclops scutifer characterize the most ‘arctic’ waters. A comparison with data from earlier investigations did not confirm expected signs of acidification.  相似文献

The development and the mean decline rates of nitrate and soluble reactive silicate (SRSi) were studied in stratifying lakes of south-eastern Norway. The concentrations of nitrate and SRSi had often a decline phase with about constant decline rate. The mean decline rate seemed to increase with increasing mean concentration of total phosphorus (TP). The possibility of Si- and N-limiting growth was higher in eutrophic than in oligo- and mesotrophic lakes, which may partly explain the higher dominance of Oscillatoria compared with the diatoms in many eutrophic lakes.In the lakes studied the mean concentration of TP and the spring concentrations of SRSi and nitrate may be used to determine roughly when Si- and N-limiting growth may take place respectively. If the concentrations of SRSi or nitrate are high at the beginning of the growth season and the mean concentration of TP is low, Si- or N-limiting growth may not take place.The SRSi : NO3 decline ratio often varied between 2 and 8 and Si was always the first of these two nutrients to become growth-limiting.  相似文献

1. A series of resource competition experiments were performed with four diatom taxa isolated from saline lakes in the Northern Great Plains of North America. Three variables were tested in a factorial design: N/P ratio (6 : 1, 12 : 1, 24 : 1, 48 : 1), salinity (5, 8, 11‰), and anion composition (sulphate versus bicarbonate-dominated medium).
2. Coexistence of Chaetoceros elmorei , Cyclotella quillensis , and Cymbella pusilla occurred at the two lowest N/P ratios. These three taxa have similar N requirements and thus competitive exclusion by the taxon with the lowest N requirement may have required more time.
3. Anomoeoneis costata , which had the highest nitrogen requirements and slowest growth rate of these four taxa, declined in all cases. Cyclotella biovolume concentration consistently declined at the two highest N/P ratios, indicating a higher P requirement, which is consistent with its distribution pattern.
4. In general, we found opposite trends with respect to all variables for Chaetoceros , a taxon that mainly inhabits sulphate systems, versus Cymbella , a bicarbonate-associated taxon. Our results suggest that Cymbella may be found mainly in bicarbonate systems because of a higher C requirement, whereas Chaetoceros may be less abundant in these systems, in part, because of competitive interactions with bicarbonate-associated taxa.  相似文献

Diatom studies carried out in Central and Eastern Poland have shown a diversified composition and considerable changes of relative frequency of dominant diatoms in profiles of lake sediments of the Mazovian and Ferdynandovian interglacials. Cyclotella spp. are dominant in a large part of the sediment profiles at Adamówka, awki-7 and Wola Grzymalina-59 and, at Krpiec and Podlodów, Stephanodiscus is also common while at Biaa Podlaska and Falcice, Aulacoseira is most abundant. Cyclotella comta var. lichvinensis and C. vorticosa are the typical diatoms in the Mazovian Interglacial. In the sediments representing the Ferdynandovian Interglacial, the characteristic diatoms are Cyclotella cf. reczickiae and the Stephanodiscus rotula/niagarae complex.  相似文献

Old (ca 1920) and recent (1978) diatom assemblages from sixteen pristine moorland pools are compared by analysis of pH-spectra, diversity (Hill's index), (dis)similarity (number of species in common, Dyer dissimilarity) and principal component analysis. The pH-spectra of clear water pools indicate that the formerly wide range of pH (4–6) is very narrow now (3.7–4.6). No significant change of pH (ca 4.5) is observed in brown water moorland pools. Diversity significantly declines in clear water pools and has a tendency to rise in brown water pools. The number of species in common does not change. The Dyer dissimilarity significantly decreases in clear water lakes, no change is found in brown water lakes. The first principal component (PC 1) explains 61% of total variance between samples and is nearly completely determined byEunotia exigua. PC 1 has a strong positive correlation with both the absolute and relative sulfate concentration and other factors related to acidification (Ca2+, Al3+, Mg2+, electrical conductivity). PC1 has a negative correlation with factors characterizing humic acid waters (K MnO4-consumption, Fe, (Na+ + K+)/ (Ca2++Mg2+) etc.). Old samples have low scores on PC 1. Recent samples from clear waters have high scores on PC 1. The original variation, caused by regional factors, is replaced by a sulfate controled variation. The factors which are responsible for the recent differences in sulfate concentrations between pools are discussed (sulfate reduction, accumulation by dry deposition in adjacent pine forests and drought). Some observations contribute to the opinion that acidification may be considered as eutrophication and not as oligotrophication.  相似文献

Data on recenr diatom community structure and relevant environmental characteristics from the lakes and their catchments have been collected from 151 oligotrophic lakes in eastern Finland. The pattern of frequency distribution of diatoms as a function of environmental variables, including land use in the catchment, differs between diatom taxa and indicates the optimum conditions and amplitude of occurrence for particular species. This kind of study should lead to increased understanding of the environmental requirements of diatom species and will be useful in the interpretation of historical changes in lakes as well as in forecasting possible future changes.  相似文献

Aquatic macrophytes in saline lakes of the Canadian prairies   总被引:7,自引:4,他引:3  
Vascular macrophyte species richness decreases with increasing salinity. Only three species of submerged plants (Potamogeton pectinatus, Ruppia maritima, R. occidentalis) tolerate hypersaline waters (>50 g l-1, total of ionic constituents). Eight emergent species occur in more saline habitats but only five (Scirpus maritimus var. paludosus, Distichlisstricta, Puccinellia nuttalliana, Scirpus americanus, Triglochin maritima) occur commonly over a range of saline lakes into the hypersaline category. Usually, species tolerant of high salinities are found over the entire saline spectrum and even extend into subsaline waters (<3 g l-1) and thrive there. A major increase in the number of species occurs below 5 g l-1. As the water recedes plants such as Salicornia rubra, Suaeda calceoliformes, Hordeum jubatum and Sonchus arvensis invade.Submerged angiosperm distribution is controlled by total ion concentration and substrate texture plays no apparent role. Although angiosperms normally grow in all kinds of substrates, they occupy coarse substrates in Wakaw lake because suitable fine substrates are densely colonized by charophytes. In this lake light limited growth occurs to a depth of 5% of surface light. Light was not limiting in Redberry Lake but angiosperm growth was limited to the upper 8 m (10% or more of surface light). Thermal stratification and depth (pressure) were probably limiting istead. In meromictic Waldsea Lake the depth of the chemocline (6 m, 5% surface light) delimits angiosperm growth.  相似文献

A study of 102 samples from almost all salt water bodies in Spain has allowed the preparation of a comprehensive list of anostracans, cladocerans and copepods living in such extreme environments. Among the 26 species recorded, 9 are halobionts, but 17 can exist in less saline waters. Of the halobionts, several are widely distributed throughout arid areas around the Mediterranean (Arctodiaptomus salinus, Cletocamptus retrogressus, Branchinectella media, Branchinella spinosa, Daphnia mediterranea, Moina salina); Branchinecta orientalis ( = B. cervantesi) only appears in Guadiana watershed and toward the east of Hungary, and the Alona belonging to the A. elegans complex is a Spanish endemic. In the second group are many typically freshwater species which also appear occasionally in saline waters, and colonizers of wetlands in steppes, characteristically adapted to a wide range of salinity; one of the formers, Diaphanosoma cf. mongolianum, deserves closer study. The Spanish halobiontic fauna seems to be very old judging by the existence of some isolated species, e.g. B. orientalis may be a Tertiary relic. Persistence through time could have resulted from the continuous aridity of some Iberian localities during the Pleistocene and the ecological constancy of wetlands maintained by regional groundwater discharges.  相似文献

1. Global warming is predicted to cause changes in permafrost cover and stability in the Arctic. Zones of high ion concentration in regions of ice‐rich permafrost are a reservoir of chemicals that can potentially be transferred to fresh waters during thawing. Consequently, input of enriched runoff from the thaw and sediment and vegetation from the landscape could alter lakes by affecting their geochemistry and biological production. 2. Three undisturbed lakes and five lakes disturbed by retrogressive permafrost thaw slumps were sampled during late summer of 2006 to assess the potential effects of thermokarst shoreline slumping on water and sediment chemistry, the underwater light regime, and benthic macrophyte biomass and community structure. 3. Undisturbed lakes had sediments rich in organic material and selected micronutrients, while disturbed lakes had sediments richer in calcium, magnesium and strontium, greater transparency of the water column, and a well‐developed submerged macrophyte community. 4. It is postulated that enriched runoff chemistry may alter nutrient availability at the sediment–water interface and also the degradation of organic material, thus affecting lake transparency and submerged macrophytes. The results suggest that retrogressive permafrost slumping can significantly affect food webs in arctic tundra lakes through an increase in macrophyte biomass and development of a more complex benthic habitat.  相似文献

More than half of China's lakes are saline (viz. have salinities > 3 g L−1). Most salt lakes are in northwestern China (Tibet, Qinghai, Sinkiang, Inner Mongolia). Most Mongolian salt lakes are in the west of that country. Tectonic movements have been of the greatest importance in lake origins, but aeolian activity and deflation have also played a role. Many salt lakes in Qinghai-Tibet lie at altitudes > 4 000 m.a.s.l.; Aiding Hu (Sinkiang) lies at −154 m.a.s.l. Again, many lakes are large in area and deep. Small, shallow lakes are also common. Dimictic thermal patterns prevail in deep lakes, polymictic patterns in shallow ones. The highest salinity recorded is 555 g L−1. The salinity of Qinghai Lake, the largest Chinese salt lake, is 14 g L−1, but mean lake salinity on the northern Tibetan plateau is about an order of magnitude greater. Lop Nor has a salinity of ∼ 5 g L−1. Dominant ions are Na and Cl; Mg, Ca, SO4 and HCO3 + CO3 are important in certain lakes. Most major ions originate by weathering and leaching from rocks. pH values are generally high (often > 9.0). There are no bird or fish species confined to salt lakes, though many are associated with lakes of low or moderate salinity. Artemia occurs widely inland and in coastal salt pans, but is the only major macroinvertebrate of highly saline lakes. In lakes of only low to moderate salinity, invertebrate communities comprise widespread halotolerant freshwater forms and halophiles, some regionally endemic. Submerged and emergent macrophytes occur in lakes of low salinity, but phytoplankton species are more halotolerant. Ctenocladus circinatus, a green alga, is known from a Tibetan salt lake with a salinity of 200 g L−1. There is a dearth of basic limnological information on Chinese and Mongolian salt lakes. More work in particular is needed on a variety of geographically widespread lakes to (a) document seasonal physico-chemical events, and (b) compile comprehensive biological inventories of taxa present. Chinese salt lakes are significant sites for palaeoclimatic research, for conservation purposes, and for the resolution of several important biological questions (especially of an ecological and biogeographical sort). They also have important economic values. Unfortunately, the natural existence of many appears to be threatened by decreased inflows, largely the result of human impact on catchments.  相似文献

The surface sediment diatom analysis of 28 Algoma lakes (pH 4.40–8.13) indicates that even though each lake has a widely different aquatic environment and characteristic diatom assemblage, a definite relationship exists between the lake water pH and their diatom assemblages. In the acidic lakes acidobiontic and acidophilous diatom species predominate whereas in circumneutral and alkaline lakes circumneutral and alkaliphilous diatoms were most common. Cluster analysis of the pH indicator diatom assemblages grouped the study lakes into three distinct cluster groups. These groups also closely corresponded to lake water pH. On the basis of published ecological information as well as their presence in our study lakes, the pH indicator status of a number of diatom taxa have been discussed. A detailed listing of the diatom taxa identified and their pH indicator status is provided in order to facilitate their use in future diatom-inferred pH studies.  相似文献
