On the north shore of Lake Balaton four study areas were selected with different levels of mineral nutrient supply (two of them are at sewage inflows, one is at the mouth of a natural watercourse, and one is unaffected by water inflow). Studies were made on the development ofPhragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. exSteudel stands. Monthly levels of N, P, K, Na, Ca and Mg in the organs (leaf-blade, leaf-sheath, culm, aquatic root, rhizome and root) of reed were determined from April to October in 1980. Differences were detected between the four study areas in the shoot height, mass, growth rate and element contents. In the aboveground organs, the levels of N, P, and K showed a decrease all through the growing season, but Ca and Mg rose to a peak before declining for the rest of the season. In the underground organs the levels of N and P decreased to a minimum in June to July and thereafter the quantities of these elements gradually increased. In the most heavily contaminated area (area IV), significantly higher levels of tissue N, P and K were found. 相似文献

We surveyed the fungal endophytes in the leaves and roots of Phragmites australis plants along a gradient of reed decline at Lake Trasimeno (central Italy) in Oct. 2010. An integrated approach consisting of cultivation and molecular identification was used. Endophytes were recovered from 61.59 % of the samples, with a total of 1 541 isolates. On the basis of a molecular analysis of the rDNA Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region, 25 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were identified. Fusarium sp. (OTU 21) and Gibberella moniliformis (OTU 1) were the most frequently isolated fungi. Comparisons of the leaf and root samples demonstrated spatial heterogeneity in the endophyte assemblages among the plant parts and sites. In this study, we have shown that reed plants in different states of decline harbour different endophytic communities. This finding may help to understand the very complex scenario of reed die-back. 相似文献

The presented investigations have been carried out in order to estimate toxic sulphide levels and to examine detoxification capabilities in roots and rhizomes of the common reed (Phragmites australis). Underground organs of common reed are sensitive towards sulphide above 1 mM applied exogenously under hypoxia. However, certain tolerance may be achieved by sulphide detoxification. Accumulated sulphide is partially used for the synthesis of non-toxic thiols, mainly glutathione. But the detoxification capacity of the underground organs is limited. Maximum concentrations of thiols are about 60 nmol/g?1 fw in roots and 300 nmol/g?1 fw in rhizomes. Energy metabolism is considerably affected by low sulphide concentrations of 1 mM for 4 days, and immediately disturbed by increased concentrations up to 6 mM sulphide. Adenylate energy charge, total adenylates, posthypoxic respiration, and fermentation capacity decrease significantly. Roots are more sensitive than rhizomes. 相似文献

Using 779 herbarium and modern specimens, we reconstructed the spread of the common reed ( Phragmites australis ) in Quebec, Canada, where large-scale invasion of this plant species has been reported since the 1960s. All specimens were genetically differentiated using molecular tools to identify the genotype (native or exotic). The exotic genotype (haplotype M) has been present in Quebec as early as 1916, but it was rare prior to the 1970s and was almost exclusively restricted to the shores of the St. Lawrence River. The exotic genotype spread inland only after the beginning of the 1970s. In less than 20 years, a complete shift occurred, from the dominance of native genotypes to the dominance of the exotic genotype. Today, more than 95% of common reed colonies found in Quebec are dominated by the haplotype M. It is especially abundant along roads, but colonies present in marshes are also dominated by the exotic genotype. This study provides evidence that, in Quebec, the development of the highway network in the 1960s and 1970s strongly contributed to the inland expansion of the exotic genotype. Moreover, it shows the usefulness of molecular techniques for reconstructing the spread of an invader. Without the use of molecular tools, the reconstruction of invasions of exotic taxa would be impossible because of the lack of clear phenotypic differences between genotypes. 相似文献

A survey of recent publications shows that research on Phragmites australishas oftenapplied character because of the considerableecological and economic significance of the species.The main applications are water treatment, agriculture(food production or weed control) and natureconservation. In Europe, most research on natural reedstands has been motivated by reed die-back and effortstowards protection or restoration. Reed progressionand reed control have been the main concerns in otherparts of the world, and reed progression has alsoreceived increasing attention in Europe. While reeddie-back generally affects aquatic stands, progressioncan occur at both terrestrial and aquatic sites, andit can be desired (e.g. lake shore restoration)or unwanted (e.g. in species-rich fens ormarshes). Therefore, reed stands need to be assessedindividually to decide on management aims andappropriate methods. The varying status of Phragmites australisformed the background of the`European Reed Conference' held in Zürich/Switzerlandin October 1998. The seven contributions published inthis special issue are introduced with particularreference to differences between aquatic andterrestrial reed stands and to approaches used in theirassessment. 相似文献

The shoot growth during the vegetation period andshoot morphology at the end of the season wereinvestigated in four monoclonal aquatic reed stands(Phragmites australis) with differentproductivity in Berlin and Brandenburg. Investigationswere conducted over a period of six years (1991–96) toascertain the effects of differences in temperatures.All clones showed significant year-to-year variationin shoot morphology. The mean final shoot length ofthe two clones with highest variation ranged from252 cm (1991) to 388 cm (1993; Templiner See), andfrom 170 cm (1993) to 229 cm (1994; Parsteiner See).In spite of this considerable variation, morphologicalparameters measured at the end of the growing seasonshowed only a slight relation to the average airtemperature either during the main growth phase (Aprilto June) or during the period of bud formation (Augustto October of the previous year). Contrary to meanshoot length at the end of the growing season, shootelongation during the main growth phase (from April toJune) was clearly related to the sum of daily averagetemperatures. Thus, taking into account temperaturemay enhance the accuracy of studies on reed growthwhenever these studies are carried out at localitiesdiffering in temperature or in different years. 相似文献

Summary Spermatogensis of the freshwater sponge Ephydatia fluviatilis begins with differential mitosis of choanocytes in the flagellated chambers. The spermatogonia thus produced aggregate in the mesenchyme by amoeboid movement. They are surrounded by dendritic cells which eventually form the walls of spermatocysts, within which spermatogenesis takes place. Notable features are the early formation of flagella in first order spermatocytes and the appearance of two flagella in the metaphase of the second maturation division.Spermatids and spermatozoa are arranged in characteristic ways. The spermatids have their heads near the spermatocyst wall, with the flagella pointing toward the center. Later the spermatozoan heads form a median band in the spermatocyst, and the flagella extend toward the periphery.Normally all stages of spermatogenesis can be found simultaneously in a given sponge, but development within a single spermatocyst proceeds in relative synchrony. Young spermatocysts can take up additional free spermatogonia; moreover, spermatocysts at about the same stage of development, up to a maximal diatmeter of 200 m, can fuse with one another.The E. fluviatilis studied here seem to be gonochorists. 相似文献

Abstract. Freshwater sponges ( Ephydatia fluviatilis ) were raised in mineral medium containing hydroxyurea (HU) at a final concentration of 100 μg/ml. The spicules present in these sponges were counted daily. In HU-treated sponges, the regulation mechanisms of skeletogenesis remained functional despite the absence of an aquiferous system. Indeed, as in controls, the differentiation of sclerocytes from stem cells ceased when a critical number of spicules had been secreted. Stem cells again started to differentiate into sclerocytes when isolated from sponges that had completed their skeletogenesis. The number of spicules secreted was found to be an inverse function of silicate concentration. These results demonstrate that the regulation of skeletogenesis is not dependent on the differentiation of the aquiferous system. 相似文献

Invasive plants can substantially modify wetland structure and animal distribution patterns. In eastern North America, a Eurasian haplotype of the common reed (Phragmites australis, haplotype M) is invading wetlands. We studied the invasion of common reed in freshwater wetlands of an urbanized landscape and its effects on the distribution of amphibians at different life stages. Specifically, we hypothesized that the probability of reed invasion would be greatest in wetlands near anthropic disturbances. We predicted that the probability of desiccation at sampling stations increases with reed cover. Furthermore, we expected that wetlands invaded by common reed would have lower amphibian abundances, apparent survival, and rates of recruitment. We conducted trapping surveys to compare anuran assemblages of tadpoles, juveniles, and adults in 50 wetlands during two field seasons. The probability of reed invasion in wetlands increased with the cover of heavily-managed areas within 1,000 m and the distance to the nearest forest, but decreased with the length of roads within 1,000 m. The probability of station desiccation increased with reed cover. We found no evidence of a negative effect of reed presence on anuran population parameters, at any life stage. Landscape variables, such as the percent cover of forest or heavily-managed areas within a given radius from each wetland, influenced the abundance or the apparent survival of juvenile frogs and the abundance of ranid tadpoles. Our results show that amphibian patterns depend more strongly on the structure of the landscape surrounding wetlands than on exotic reed invasion in wetlands. 相似文献

Clonal propagation is important for the survival and maintenance of the common reed Phragmites australis. Pot culture experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of lead (Pb) concentration (0, 500, 1500, 3000, 4500 mg·kg?1) and water stress on the clonal reproductive ability of this species. The Pb concentration found in plant organs, in decreasing order, was roots >shoots >rhizomes. There was a negative relationship between the growth of clonal propagative modules (excluding axillary shoot buds) and Pb concentrations, which caused a decrease in biomass, rhizome growth and number of axillary and apical rhizome buds. Daughter axillary shoots exhibited a tolerance strategy, with no significant change in their number; the axillary and apical rhizome buds, daughter apical rhizome shoots and rhizomes exhibited compensatory growth during the late stage of Pb (excluding 4500 mg·kg?1) treatment in a wet environment. Pb applications above 500 mg·kg?1 reduced these parameters significantly in the drought treatment, except for the number of axillary shoot buds, which did not change. Our results indicate that clonal propagative resistance to Pb contamination can occur via tolerance strategies, compensatory growth and a Pb allocation strategy, enabling these reeds to maintain population stability in wet environments. However, clonal modular growth and reproductive ability were inhibited significantly by the interaction between drought and Pb, which would cause a decline in P. australis populations in a dry environment. Lead concentrations of 4500 and 500 mg·kg?1 in soils might meet or exceed the Pb tolerance threshold of clonally propagated reeds in wet and dry environments, respectively. 相似文献

Populations of the Tour species of Chloriona commonly found in the Netherlands C dorsata, C. glaucescens, C. smaragdula and C. vasconica –were cultured in the laboratory on Phragmites australis, their exclusive host plant in the field. The low frequency substrate-transmitted signals produced during the calling phase of mating behaviour were digitally analysed for the males and females of each species. Variables selected to cover most aspects of the call were measured, and variation was quantified within species and statistically tested among species using univariate and multivariate techniques. The calls of the males were more complex in structure than those of the females, with two different phase patterns recognized, and were species-specific. C. glaucescens and C vasconica were also separated on variables of the female call, but C dorsata and C. smaragdula completely overlapped. No significant differences were found between the calls of the long-winged and.short-winged female morphs of C. smaragdula. A possible role for variation in calling signals, and responses to them, in the evolution and maintenance of reproductive isolation in Chlonona is discussed. 相似文献

The concentrations of heavy metals in the roots, rhizomes, stems and leaves of the aquatic macrophyte Phragmites australis (common reed), and in the corresponding water and sediment samples from the mouth area of the Imera Meridionale River (Sicily, Italy), were investigated to ascertain whether plant organs are characterized by differential accumulation, and to test the suitability of the various organs for heavy metal biomonitoring of water and soil. Heavy metals considered were Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn. Results showed that belowground organs were the primary areas of metal accumulation. In particular, metal concentrations in plant organs decreased in the order of root > rhizome ≥ leaf > stem. All four organs showed significant differences in concentration for Cr, Hg, Mn, Zn, thus suggesting low mobility from roots to rhizomes and to aboveground organs. Although the organs followed different decreasing trends of metal concentration, the trend Mn > Zn > Pb > Cu was found in each plant organ. Mn showed the highest concentrations in all organs whereas the lowest concentrations regarded Cd and Cr in the belowground and aboveground organs, respectively. The toxic threshold was exceeded by Cr in roots, rhizomes and leaves, Mn in roots and leaves, Ni in roots. The highest average concentrations were found as follows: Cd, Hg, Pb, Zn in root, Cr, Mn, Ni in sediment, Cu in water. Positive linear relationships were found between heavy metal concentrations in all plant organs and those in water and sediment, thus indicating the potential use of such organs for pollution monitoring of water and sediment. Advantages of using plant species as biomonitors, especially Phragmites australis, were also discussed. 相似文献

Dynamics of common reed (Phragmites australisTrin.) in Central Europe have so far mostly beeninvestigated in connection with studies on reed`die-back' along lake shores. However, there hasrecently been increasing concern about reed expansionat terrestrial sites, such as fens and wet grasslands.In this paper we report on the results of fourseparate studies which monitored reed dynamics inSwiss fens with various mowing regimes over a periodof 4 to 15 years. The first study compared unmownplots with plots mown in winter in a triennialrotation; the second one included unmown plots, plotsmown in summer, and plots mown in winter; the thirdone compared plots mown in June and September withplots only mown in September; the fourth studyinvestigated only plots mown in September. Shootnumber and shoot size were recorded in permanentquadrats. In all studies the performance of P.australisfluctuated without trend or tended todecrease during the period investigated. Thedecreasing tendency concerned shoot size rather thanshoot number, and within a given study it was strongerfor plots with initially taller shoots. The variousmowing regimes did hardly influence these changes.Mowing in winter every three years reduced shoot sizein the year after mowing, but not on the long term.Mowing every year in late summer reduced the shootsize compared with unmown plots on the short term, butthis effect almost disappeared on the long term, aftermowing had become biennial. Mowing in June (inaddition to in September) caused no noticeableeffects. We conclude that other factors (e.g. weatherconditions, competition, or population processes) aremore important than management in determining theabundance of P. australisin the fen communitiesinvestigated here, although long-term effects ofmowing in summer still need more investigation. As apractical consequence it is suggested that at siteswhich are not strongly dominated by P.australis, as most of those investigated here,reducing the performance of this species should notconstitute a major target of nature conservationmanagement, nor can its dynamics be used as anindicator for management success before underlyingcauses are better understood. 相似文献

Exocytosis of residual bodies by choanocytes, archeocytes and endopinacocytes lining the aquiferous system of Ephydatia fluviatilis has been demonstrated using calibrated latex beads and Escherichia coli as tracers. In passing into the mesohyl or the lumen of the exhalant aquiferous canals, beads, and altered bacteria were enveloped by the plasma membrane of the cell containing them. The membrane constricted at a neck region to form extruding vacuoles. This process appeared first in choanocytes and later in other cell types. The occurrence of these buds increased with the length of incubation time, as did the number of particles they contained. Acid phosphatase activity was frequently associated with the particles budding from the cell membrane, confirming that this process followed digestive activity. Membranous vacuoles were recovered from the external medium and observed by TEM and those adhering to the substratum were seen by SEM. These observations proved that vacuoles were released from the sponges. This membrane-consuming mechanism of exoctyosis implies intense membrane replacement in the digestive cells of the sponge. 相似文献
